Pick the Perfect Mother’s Day Flower

Mound

Mothers Day did not start out being a day just to honor mothers. The beginnings of Mother’s Day were influenced by Ann Jarvis, a young Appalachian homemaker during the Civil War. She attempted to unite women into helping improve sanitary conditions and try to lower infant mortality by fighting disease and curbing milk contamination, through what she called Mother’s Work Days. After the war, Jarvis and other women organized Mother’s Friendship Day picnics and other events as pacifist strategies to unite former foes. Julia Ward Howe, (best known as the composer of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”), issued a widely read “Mother’s Day Proclamation” in 1870, calling for women to take an active political role in promoting peace. Upon the death of Ann Jarvis in 1905, her daughter, Anna, stepped in and began to rally for a memorial day for mothers. The first recorded Mother’s Day was on May 10, 1908, a Sunday, at St. Andrew’s Methodist Episcopal Church in Virginia. These celebrations continued each year and Anna handed out a single white carnation to each of the mothers at her church. This started the tradition of white carnations being a large part of Mother’s Day bouquets. Finally, President Wilson on May 9th, 1914, declared Mother’s Day as an official holiday honoring mothers who had lost children to war. Carnations are now known to be the official flower for Mother’s Day. When buying Mother’s Day flowers it is good to know the meaning behind the colors of carnations. • White carnations represent the purity of love and good fortune and luck. • Light red carnations convey admiration,

• Dark red symbolizes deep love and affection. • Striped carnations symbolize regret of a lost love or one that is not mutually shared. • Purple carnations indicate condolence for the death of a loved one. • Pink carnations symbolize a mother’s undying love.

May Pet of the Month: Sparky Phillips

Hi, my name is Sparky. My Dad’s name is Mike. His sister works at an animal shelter and when I arrived, she thought I was exceptionally friendly and would be a perfect fit for him. I am so lucky that he thought so too! I am a real homebody who just loves to play. My favorite toy is my Wiggle Worm, which I will play fetch with. I also chase ping pong balls around the house. When I want to get really creative I will hide my toys in various places around the house, my version of hide and seek, and have Dad look forthem and find them. More times than not he can’t find them, and I forget where I hide them. Oh well, it’s good way to get new toys. When I want attention I tickle Dad by rubbing my front paws on his pant leg. During the day I sneak cat naps on the couch, but at night I like to curl up in bed with Dad. Congratulations Sparky!

“It’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.” ~Abraham Lincoln

Celebrating Good Health During Older Americans Month

Sponsored by Joel Denney, Owner, CareBuilders MN The contributions of older Americans are celebrated each May during Older Americans’ Month. This year’s theme, “Engage at Every Age,” emphasizes that you are never too old to enrich your physical and emotional well-being. To encourage happy, healthy and productive golden years when older adults are able to pursue their hobbies and passions, consider these tips from Cigna-HealthSpring, one of the nation’s largest providers of Medicare plans. • Get an annual exam. Annual visits are critical for identifying potential health issues early, as well as maintaining a relationship with your primary care physician. During this visit, your doctor can establish a plan based on your age, gender and health status for the vaccinations and health screenings you need, such as mammograms, cholesterol screenings and colorectal cancer screenings. Medicare and Medicare Advantage cover certain types of annual exams at no extra cost. Check with your plan for details. Older American’s Month, cont. on page 10

Warm Weather Balance When it comes to spring and summer health care we often hear about the need to apply sunscreen, wear sunglasses to protect our eyes, and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. But the longer days of sun light and warm weather create an opportunity to buoy our health in ways that impact our lives well beyond Labor Day. Check out these health tips to balance and expand the health of your body, mind and spirit.

1. Deepen The Spiritual Awakening of Spring -- We commonly “Spring Clean” our lives, cleaning out the cobwebs physically, mentally and spiritually with greater attention toward renewal. Deepen this “awakening.” For instance, did you de-clutter any part of your home? Think about the emotional and mental impact this had and delve into how incorporating a “no-clutter” attitude, replete with loving every item in your home, amplifies your overall wellbeing. Or, did you perhaps “Spring Clean” your body? Think about how well you felt after the cleanse and consider adapting a cleanse-like mentality to your everyday nutrition. 2. Slow Down -- Spring is chock full of delights for the senses. Meander through a botanical garden, plant an herb garden (even on your window sill!), enjoy your local farmer’s market or take a sunrise walk before the hustle bustle of the day starts. See, smell, taste and the joys of warmer weather. Take the time to notice the seasonal changes from day-to-day. 3. Relax and Breathe -- Create the time to hang out in a hammock, sit on a beach, find a shady spot under a tree in your favorite park and mindfully breathe. There’s something about bring outdoors that makes it particularly easy to cultivate a breathing practice. Breathe, stretch, read, write -- all great ways

to spread your wings, find your voice and connect to your source. 4. Enjoy Seasonal Bounty -- Oh, the ecstasy of warm weather foods! Cherries, watermelon, peaches, tomatoes, corn, arugula, rhubarb, melon, berries -- it is a feasting bonanza. Take a walk through any farmer’s market and delight in all the produce summer has to offer. Get it while you can! 5. Volunteer -- With so many hours of daylight it’s a great time of the year to volunteer outdoors. Walking trails, nature trails, community gardens, farms, and conservancy organizations would all welcome your help. Meet other like-minded people, give back to your community and experience the boost in mood and wellbeing that service provides. 6. Try Something New -- It’s a great time of the year to try out an abundance of activities. Landscape painting, trapeze school, any number of outdoor sports (have you always wanted to know how to play lacrosse? Join a beginners league.), surfing, bicycle touring, or whale watching. Make a list and go! By Melissa Rapoport, a Professional Health Consultant, working with men and women to reclaim their bodies and love their lives. Visit www.melissarapoport.com and take the quiz “Are You Sabotaging Your Health?” to receive a free personalized health report.

Older Americans’ Month,

• Take medications as prescribed. Your drugs were prescribed for a reason. It is important to adhere to your medication regime and take medications as prescribed. Some drugs can cause harmful interactions, so make sure your doctor knows everything you take, including over-the-counter drugs.

• If you smoke, stop. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the U.S. It’s never too late to quit, and the benefits of doing so are almost immediate, according to the American Cancer Society. Keep in mind that parts of Medicare cover smoking cessation counseling and prescription medications. • Get some exercise. Regular exercise can help older adults stay independent and prevent many health problems that come with age. Many Medicare Advantage plans offer exercise programs designed specifically for older adults at no extra cost. If your plan has a program like this, make sure to take advantage of it. • Have some fun! Be sure to make time for activities you enjoy and seek out others who also enjoy them. 10 May, 2018 • Balance MN

“We are constantly inspired by stories of older adults reinventing themselves later in life in meaningful ways, from running marathons to mentoring young people to painting for the very first time,” said Brian Evanko, president of Cigna-HealthSpring. “The key that unlocks all of this is maintaining your physical and emotional health and well-being through the years.” (Article provided by StatePoint) If you or an aging loved one are considering senior care, please contact the friendly staff at CareBuilders at Home Minnesota. Encourage Your Child to Read

by Alina Niemi Everyone says reading is important. Libraries, schools and teachers stress reading as part of classroom education for kids. Everyone says it’s better for kids to read books than watch television or play video games. But why should you encourage it? Here are some of the benefits of reading, and why it is important to your child. It encourages language Reading is one of the best ways to learn a language. Children learn by exposure, and when they see proper grammar, punctuation, and word usage in stories and other written forms, they learn without trying to learn. They don’t necessarily have to study the rules of grammar if they have seen enough examples in books they love. It increases vocabulary skills How many times have you read a word in a book and gone to look it up in a dictionary? If you’re like many people, probably not too many times. Instead, you likely understood the meaning of the word based on the context of the sentence. Kids do the same thing. Plus, since their brains are in a state of enormous growth and development, they are more likely to absorb what they read and understand it intuitively, without needing things explained to them. Summer reading programs for kids aren’t just fluff, either. John Hopkins University researchers discovered that the difference in learning between kids of various socio-economic classes wasn’t very great during the school year. However, during the summer, disadvantaged youth did not read as much, and they experienced a greater “summer slide,” (a loss of knowledge and skills) over the break. Having access to books, and reading, 16 May, 2018 • Balance MN

helped to narrow that gap, so that the chances of children, regardless of socio-economic status, falling more and more behind as they got older, decreased. Libraries are a great leveling tool; everyone can access plenty of books and reading material, free of charge. It helps you earn money A study of adult literacy done by the National Center for Education Statistics, found that adults with low levels of literacy were three times more likely to be below the poverty level than adults who could read well. Think about it: if you can’t read English fluently, you will have trouble with job applications, memos, instruction booklets, tax forms, and all sorts of things you will encounter in your adult life. Getting kids interested in reading from an early age sets the stage for greater achievement and learning for decades to come. It is not an exaggeration to say that reading as a child can change the course of a child’s life and affect their learning and earning potential. On way to help ensure children learning to read is to attend the “Once Upon a Time” gala on May 19, 2018 for Read Indeed, a nonprofit literacy organization founded by 17-yearold Maria Keller when she was 8 years old. To date, Read Indeed has collected and donated 2.4 million books to kids in need. Gala tickets are available on an individual basis or for tables of 10. The event includes a gourmet dinner, drinks and a live band! All proceeds will be used to purchase new books for students in need in the Twin Cities. For tickets visit http://bit.ly/ReadIndeedInvite. If you are unable to attend, please consider donating towards the event at www.readindeed.org.

Keep Pets Safe Outside by Sharon Jones Raccoons, opossums, mice, bats, and birds can all be adorable and fun to watch, but some people just don’t understand the potential dangers that these forms of wildlife can pose to their family and pets. An encounter with even a small and seemingly harmless wild animal that finds their way onto your property can result in serious consequences for you, your children and your dogs and cats.

Make sure your Fence is in Good Condition

Wild mammals and birds can damage your property, upset trash receptacles and set up nests in your yard, in your shed or even in accessible areas of your home. Certain forms of wildlife carry fleas, lice and ticks and can bring the threat of potentially deadly diseases like rabies.

Don’t leave Pets Outside Unattended

Simple Steps to Protect Your Family and Pets Even if you live in an area where wildlife sightings are very common, it doesn’t necessarily mean that there needs to be an imminent danger to your kids, dogs, and cats. In fact, there are some very simple steps that you can take to minimize the potential risk of an unwanted wildlife encounter: Keep Trash Bins Securely Covered Squirrels, rats, raccoons, opossums and wild cats all love to rummage through the garbage that contains scraps of food. By keeping trash in tightly tied bags and in cans with secure lids, you eliminate a major source of attraction for wildlife. 18 May, 2018 • Balance MN

Fixing holes or replacing missing planks in the fence around your property keeps rabbits, raccoons, and many other mammals off of your property. A secure boundary really minimizes the chances for a potentially dangerous encounter between a wild animal and your pets or children.

Even with a solid fence, some animals will still find their way into your yard. If your dogs are out roaming for extended periods they have a greater chance of coming across a wild animal that has made its way onto your property. If the animal has a nest or a food source nearby they may become aggressive and look to protect instead of escape. This can result in serious injury to both your pet and the wild animal. Keep Cats Indoors Cats are natural hunters and are not necessarily deterred by your fence. If there is a bird or rabbit in a neighbor’s yard, they will likely give chase. A cat who exits the confines of your property is not only at a much greater risk of injury due to a wild animal attack, but also at risk from other dangers (like traffic, poison or traps left out by others for wild animals, etc.)

Sister Saturday

May 12th• 9 a.m.-5 p.m. con’t from pg. 1

“Sister” is a word that can mean so many things in a woman’s life - blood sister, friend sister, mom sister - sisters play a vital role throughout our lives. No matter where we live, what we do or what our social setup might be, sisters should always be a part of an individual’s life. We see different kind of sisters in our social life. The best are those who stand with us in good times and bad. Sisters are not meant to be preserved in your phone or online, in your personal diary or in your email address book. Fill up your life with the colors of sisterhood by spending more and more time with your close friends. Go out with them, invite them into your home and celebrate triumphs with them.
