Board Report

O

ur Board has worked industriously on priorities identified for the 2018 Strategic Plan in the areas of communication, marketing and participation, governance and organisational structure, high performance and player welfare, and alignment and influence. Communication Perhaps most noticeable to our members is the new BNSW website launched in April with improved access and functionality and, we hope, a cleaner look. You would also notice an increased social media presence. Information is circulated to our members via website, social media, e-newsletters, email or via your Bowlsbox account. We feel this coverage gives the best chance of information you need reaching you. Board and CEO have been on the road attending as many face-to-face meeting opportunities with Zones, via forums, Clubs NSW State Council meetings and CMAA meetings as possible. Marketing & Participation Increased event live streaming is being enthusiastically received. The trend is for data use on phones and BNSW is looking to stream to phones as well. Considerable effort has gone into professionalising and enhancing the identity of competition and

this will continue to encompass all events. Governance & Organisation Structure The Suiko (governance and organisational review) Report has been completed. A staff restructure has been implemented with General Manager, Anthony Cottee, employed. More recently, James Berriman joins us in the role of Programs Coordinator, bringing with him experience gained working as a Regional Bowls Manager. A review of our Member Protection Policy and Social Media Policy has been undertaken and James will add strength in a continuing review of internal policies and governance matters. To the Board we welcome Jane Fernandez appointed as independent director. Jane brings a wealth of experience in sports and major events industry. High Performance & Player Welfare Events for 2018 are aligned to the new athlete pathway with the assistance of Gary Willis in a High Performance (HP) manager role. A revised State camp format with professional facilitator has been implemented. All HP players have completed ASADA training and certification. Districts and Zones have been advised of Member Protection Information Officer training opportunities. Alignment & Influence BNSW has provided input into the Bowls

Australia Strategic Plan for 2018-2022 and is liaising with BA on National IT Strategy. The NSW Office of Sport Benchmarking & Organisational Health Project 2017-18 Survey results indicate BNSW is exceeding sound organisation health - and we want to maintain our organisational health at this level. Keeping BA Strategic Plan and Suiko Report in mind, our strategic focus for the year ahead is on marketing, coaching and governance review. Lastly, I wish to thank my fellow Directors, our CEO, Committee members, staff and pool of volunteers at the coalface – each of whom plays an integral part in growing the health of our sport. On a lighter but no less heartfelt note, I invite you to join us at our major event honouring our top bowlers – our Player Awards Evening – held February of each year. It’s a great chance to catch up with mates. So keep your eyes peeled for advance notice towards end of this year.

Vince Beard - President

“ Board and CEO have been

CEO Report

T

he 2017/18 year has been one of introspective review across many areas of the Association. The completion of a governance and organisation review by Suiko Consulting provided us with a refreshed perspective and momentum on key issues Ensuring relevance to and connection with our members has been a key driver of our strategic direction over the past 12 months. I have appreciated the opportunity to travel to many regional areas to meet with delegates across NSW. This is something that we intend to increase over the coming 12 months. Our administration structures were identified as unnecessarily complex. This has seen Bowls NSW move towards streamlining our District and Zone structures. The positive approach that District and Zone administrators have taken to improving their governance structures has to be congratulated, recognising that the sport is overburdened with too many layers of administration which duplicate efforts and reduce the effectiveness of communication. The achievements of NSW bowlers have been phenomenal. Highlighted by the golden year of David Ferguson who was crowned NSW Bowler of the Year and finished the year as Number 1 ranked bowler in Australia. Being a Commonwealth Games year, it was also pleasing to see NSW KENO Blues new recruit Aaron Wilson crowned the singles Gold Medallist, an outstanding effort which has only been achieved by two other Australians in history, Rob Parrella and Kelvin Kerkow. The NSW KENO Blues continue to impress at national level, finishing the 2018 year in 2nd place behind Victoria in the Australian Sides Championship. The assistance and guidance provided by State Coach Gary Willis and the NSW State Selectors headed by Chairman Ken Oliver has been invaluable and has ensured the success of the NSW High Performance program. The strength of the NSW HP system was highlighted with the selection of NSW KENO Blues players Jesse Noronha, Ben Twist, Corey

10

Wedlock, Aron Wilson and Aaron Teys to make up the 5-man sides to travel to the UK to represent Australia in July 2018. Live Streaming for our NSW State Championships reached a staggering 2.2 million people on Facebook, with over 400,000 unique viewers tuning into watch one or more of the games online over 7 days. This area of the sport is growing each and every month, with most major tournaments in the Country turning to Live Streaming to get our sport out into the public arena. Bowls NSW is committed to investing more into Live Streaming to ensure that our events and our talented bowlers are on display. As we move into the 2018/19-year, Bowls NSW will embark with Bowls Australia and other STAs on a new National IT system which will be rolled out as a Whole of Sport Initiative to better improve the way we administer our membership systems as well as Competition Systems. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of our Corporate Partners, including ClubKENO, Drakes Pride, ClubPlus Superannuation, Cabramatta Bowling Club, Warilla Bowling Club and Power Productions, as well as host venues who have supported Bowls NSW throughout the year. Thank you to President Vince and the Bowls NSW Directors and Committees who have volunteered their expertise and time into the Association, and the hardworking team of Bowls NSW staff, Anthony Cottee, Courtney Allouche, Andrew Lynn, Shontelle McKeown, Jennifer Hirama, Santosh Gupta, Tricia Breuer and James Berriman who excel at what they do and work tirelessly to ensure that the sport and Bowls NSW continues to improve each year.

Sport Development

General Manager’s Report New initiatives, fresh starts and plenty of change for Bowls NSW, probably best concludes our 2017/18

W

e took on the challenges of revamping certain aspects of the organisation to ensure a closer alignment to the needs of the membership. Whilst this is an ongoing process, I feel we have created many opportunities, built many bridges and opened the communication channels with our clubs and Zones in a greater capacity. We have been out and about visiting the membership, listening to the views and opinions and seeing what does and doesn’t work. It has helped us enormously in identifying things of the past that were enjoyed as well as where we are heading. We’ll continue to create these engaging opportunities with our membership well into the future. In particular, I’d like to commend the work of our Committees who are all volunteers. They dedicate their time, enthusiasm and passion to this wonderful sport and are essential in the carrying out of important activities of the organisation. We were able to set a clear guide for our umpires across the State and, in particular, the Presenter and Assessor network on the pathways moving forward. The Committee have been able to properly engage the network to ensure we are delivering top quality courses across the State and that our umpires are well supported. I’m certain this will continue into 2018-19. Bowls NSW have also been able to re-establish a Coaching Committee. The work this group has done, in particular working with the Zones on establishing courses, has been outstanding. We have a great deal more to do in this area but we really have been able to get some fantastic

12

results and we will look to expand on these successes in the coming 12 months. The State Match Committee (SMC) have also had a huge year in a demanding role. In partnership with Warilla Bowls & Recreation Club, the SMC added the NSW 5-A-Side competition to an already exciting calendar of events. The competition was a huge success with Cabramatta Bowling & Recreation Club (CB&RC) taking out the inaugural competition. The Committee also held two forums over the 12 months, providing great insight and direction for the competitions of future years. These forums have been an extremely successful engagement, well supported by CB&RC and the membership representatives who attend. The time and effort put in by SMC has been exceptional. Just how much effort behind the scenes actually goes into conducting these competitions often passes unnoticed. I look forward to continuing this work, building on such a successful year. In the representative scene our juniors have performed well and, more importantly, the pathways to support junior bowls are being modified. We have a long way to go but Gary Willis (State Coach) and the Junior Committee are working to put great things in place for the future. We have farewelled two staff from Bowls NSW - Chris Green (former Programs Coordinator) and Declan Kelly (former Sport Administration Trainee) who have both moved on to new endeavours. Both have served our membership and the organisation for many years with enthusiasm and direction. We thank them for their outstanding contributions and wish them every success in their new careers. We welcome James Berriman to the new and revamped role of Programs Coordinator. James joins us from Bowls Australia and brings a wealth of experience from his time as a Regional Bowls Manager. He has been working closely with our Coaching and Umpiring Committees, as well as the Junior Committee. I encourage you to approach James on these or any issues around club support. Our most recent, and much needed, change has been the new website. We have more IT changes coming and will be working in this space to ensure that all member clubs have greater access to membership requirements and competition management, hopefully simplifying the processes even further. It has been an eye-opening 12 months for me personally, as we took on the challenge of reinventing ourselves as an organisation. I’d like to credit the members of staff for their commitment and drive to these challenges, in particular, for their acceptance and adoption to new ways of thinking. They have done a sensational job and we will continue to strive for even better outcomes. Thank you to Greg Helm (CEO) and the Board of Directors for their ongoing and continued support. I look forward to the year ahead.

Marketing & Communication “Last year, Bowls NSW entered in to three major new partnerships. These partnerships have been created with an express view to benefit our members

T

he financial year of 2017-18 saw the formation of exciting new initiatives at Bowls NSW. Last year, Bowls NSW entered into three major new partnerships. These partnerships have been created with an express view to benefit our members. We have partnered with two companies that offer savings solutions in an area that is of great concern to our clubs and members - energy. ‘Make it Cheaper’ (MIC) are an energy price comparison service. They will compare the market for you to see if they can get you a better deal on your energy plan. This is a free and easy service for our members and clubs. In the last year MIC have saved the bowling clubs who have utilised the service, an average of $2000 per month on their energy bills. ‘Energywise’ are an energy consumption advisory company. Energywise will conduct a free onsite review of your

club and offer energy saving solutions to reduce your usage and energy costs. Our third new partner is in another area of concern for our members, health and aging. Bowls NSW has partnered with NeuRA - Australia’s premier neurological research facility. Together with Neura we want to encourage clubs to host a “Bowling for Better Balance’ day during April, (national fall prevention month). All money raised by these events will go to NeuRA to help fund fall prevention studies and to provide balance programs to the aged communities. The goal of our partnership with NeuRA is to keep our members healthy and playing the game they love for longer. The next twelve months will see more new and exciting partnerships. Our electronic newsletter continues to be a popular and effective communication channel for our members. The printable PDF version of the newsletter is also popular, we strongly encourage clubs to print this each month and make copies available for members who may not have their own access to the internet, or display it, for members to read, on the club notice board. The Player Awards evening was held on 21 February at the Kirribilli Club, Lavender Bay. This event is one of the most anticipated of the year and this year did not disappoint. Despite the Women’s Bowls NSW Association this year choosing to hold their own event, our attendance was as high as previous years. Our patron, His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d), Governor of New South Wales, presented the Bowler of the Year trophy and made a fantastic speech. Next year event will be held 20 February 2019.

General Services & Archival Committee Bowling activities We regard ourselves as the “social arm” of the Association. We have a regular number of Sydney-based bowlers who play matches against various local groups. We also have a “social test series” against Tasmania twice a year. In addition to our local Sydney bowlers, we have bowlers from all over the State who are invited to attend at the inter-state matches. Our bowlers are referred to as the Peet Kay (PK) bowlers. There are two test series a year; one in Tasmania and one in Sydney. This is a series that was started in the 1960s by two state presidents - Rupert Peet (Tasmania) and William Shakespeare (Bill) Kay (NSW). You will know us by our distinctive blue Peet Kay shirts and our very much traditional cream trousers. Our first match of the year was against the State Parliamentarians at Rosehill

BC, followed with the Past Presidents at West Pennant Hills BC. The Peet Kay test series was then played over 4 days in the Sydney region – firstly a welcome day at The Hills BC, which was a first for that club and their President, Jim Castles. The official first two tests were played and won by NSW at Rosehill BC and Wenty Leagues BC. The dead rubber was won by Tasmania at Dundas Sports BC. The sides was led by NSW State President at that time, Barry Watkins, and we thank all those clubs for making it a special occasion. Zone 2’s Newcastle’s DBA travelled down to Sydney for the annual challenge for the Les Parrott Shield. The match was played at Rydalmere Central BC, which would have been one of the last official functions at that club before it closed down. Newcastle’s John Smith OAM was “royally” pleased to present the trophy to NSW State President, Vince Beard after losing on the master board by 1 shot. With the new year, it saw us being led by the State President Vince Beard away on our 11-day trip to Tasmania to sightsee and to retain the Peet Kay Trophy. The series was played in the Hobart area at Glenorch City, Rosny Park, Kingborough and New Norfolk bowls clubs. The trophy was won by Tasmania two tests to one. After coming back from Tasmania we assisted with the Player Awards Night at the popular venue, the Kirribilli Club. Our local matches continued with games against City Tatts at Greenlees Park BC, Grandviews Bowling Club at Peakhurst and our last game was against the Penrith RSL Travelling Bowlers at Rosehill. NeuRA – the Grandviews game was dedicated to raising funds for this worthy research. The Board members support us in the playing of social bowls and participate whenever and wherever they can. We thank all those players and clubs who have participated over the year and the support they give us in our sport.

Match Committee State Match Committee 2017-2018: Michael Harvey (Chairman), Warren Shipley, Brian Gibson, David Ferguson, John Roberts, Col Crossingham and Andrew Lynn (Sports Coordinator)

2

017 - 2018 has been a busy year for the State Match Committee (SMC), with changes and challenges in administering and arranging our Association events (competitions). An incredibly successful period considering the time constraints placed on our program and events with consideration to the Commonwealth Games held in April, the addition of NSW 5-a-Side competition, whilst still maintaining and conducting the best State championships and side competitions. Changes to Conditions of Play (COP) were minimal, apart from the NSW Board resolution restricting “fly-in” players to 2 per Pennant match in Grade 1. Planning is now under way to review the format of the COP and Conditions for the coming season. Achieving these outcomes and results has been with the help and consultation with stakeholders across NSW. Forums and seminars with representatives from clubs and Zones were held, providing constructive and effective feedback. SMC will continue to provide information and consultation opportunities for members seeking views and information.

16

I am particularly delighted of how the State Match Committee has resolved and presided objectively over all matters. SMC has welcomed and appreciated the support and input this season of BNSW staff - Anthony Cottee and James Berriman - at meetings and events. Thank you to Warren, Brian, David, JR, Col, Anthony, James and Andrew for their good governance and administration of our Association events, with, at times, complex and consuming determinations. Thank you also to the clubs and Zones, and their officials, who hosted and supported State Pennant and Championship events. These competitions and events were conducted efficiently and professionally with positive reports from bowlers and officials. Without your co-operation and assistance, the State could not run these events. The State Match Committee has been fortunate to have worked with a number of sensational venues. The clubs all put a great deal of effort into ensuring that the players who were competing in State finals series were given the best experience possible. We thank our venue clubs for State championship and side events: • Inter-Zone Sides Championship: Port City & Westport • Rookies: Raymond Terrace • State Championships: Ettalong • Champion of Club Champions: Kiama • Club Challenge State Finals: Warilla • Senior Inter-Zone Sides Championship: Figgy Bowlo • State Pennant Finals: St Johns Park, Cabra Vale Diggers, Wagga Rules, Wagga RSL, Maitland City, Lorn Park, Tuncurry Beach, Forster, Soldiers Point, Fingal Bay, South Tamworth, Tamworth City, Engadine and Taren Point The State Match Committee is continuing to operate on the principle of quality competitions, commonsense and consistency, being fair and reasonable with each consideration and determination and with these principles in mind. We look forward to an even better year in 2019.

Michael Harvey - Chairman 2017 -2018 Bowls NSW Annual Report and Year Book

Club Advisory Committee

A

reasonably busy year with

nine clubs visited and several other visits in the pipeline but, as usual, the requests for assistance come after the club has sustained deficits for more than five to six years. This means that: •

the board has worried themselves sick as to how they are going to survive, and, more importantly, they have drained their cash reserves making it very difficult to inject cash into the business to improve its financial status.

Club life out there is not easy, especially if you are competing against a pub that really does not have the government restrictions imposed on it to the extent

clubs do. However, it is surprising the consistency in the reason the clubs visited are struggling viz. • • •

falling membership - due to concentration on bowlers; not luring younger members into their club KPIs nowhere near what they should be, and, worst of all, over staffed.

So, at the risk of becoming monotonous but stating the obvious, ask for assistance immediately you have sustained your first deficit as it makes the task of recovery that much easier. The Committee’s reputation speaks for itself and shows, without doubt, that our expertise has turned many deficits into surpluses. We have visited over 100 clubs and 99% of those are still operating today. Their bowlers have greens to play on, they are enjoying the conviviality of their fellow bowlers and the local community has somewhere to go for a feed, a beer and some entertainment. As always, I express my thanks to the Board of Bowls NSW, the CEO and his team for their assistance throughout the year because without their tireless commitment many more clubs would have closed their doors by now.

Bob Bullen - Chairman

CLUB ADVISORY VISIT = NO COST TO CLUB There is no obligation for a club requesting a visit from the Club Advisory Committee to reimburse any expenses incurred by a Committee representative.

17

Officiating Committee

T

he past year has been busy for each of the Committee members who have or are in the process of visiting each of the Zones within their area of responsibility to train and accredit the probationary Presenter/Assessors. As a result, we now have 83 Bowls Australia-accredited Presenter/Assessors. These dedicated educators usually, at their own expense, have the responsibility of educating and training new umpires as well as reaccrediting all of our existing umpires every four years. At 6 June 2018, Bowls NSW has 2,289 accredited national umpires, 99 accredited measurers and 33 accredited markers. This increase in the number of

markers is as a result of Bowls NSW requiring all markers in State championships to be accredited. The number of umpires is slightly down on last year’s numbers because many of our older umpires have been unable to continue due to health or mobility issues. To combat this decline, we are working with clubs to encourage bowlers to apply to participate in a course and become umpires. Male and female Presenter/Assessors are all accredited by Bowls Australia under the same criteria to enable them to conduct courses to educate and train new markers, measurers and national umpires as well as re-accredit existing umpires. These courses are carried out strictly in accordance with the Bowls Australia National Officiating Accreditation Scheme and, whilst there have been some cross-gender accreditations carried out in distant areas, we have been unable to reach agreement with officials of Women’s Bowls NSW to extend this to the whole of the State. The use of bowler’s arms is increasing steadily and we encourage this because it enables bowlers who would otherwise be unable to play, because of an injury or medical condition, to continue playing the game they love.

Milton Rigby - Chairman

Selection Committee

I

t was mixed success with the State Sides this year. The competitive year commenced with wins over the ACT and Queensland; with the Under-25s also achieving a win over the ACT and a close loss against Queensland. Victoria finished strongly to win the last two tests for a 2-1 win for them. However our State Under-25s had a strong win over Victoria. At the Inter-State Test Series in Darwin, NSW finished second to Victoria after two close losses but did, however, win the overall trophy in conjunction with the NSW Women’s Side who won their part of the competition. Without doubt, the other states and territories are improving and deserve their success. A further State Camp is planned for December 2018 where a successful sports specialist will address the envisaged 2019 State group of players with specialist focus on our State values and expectations. The changes to the

State playing programme, ensuring a flow of events from the State Pennant finals through to the annual City-Country fixture, are in place for 2018 including the CityCountry format, after which the State Side will be selected for the commencement of the State Series in 2019. The Over-60s also were unsuccessful in their quest in their annual Inter-State Test Series held this year at the Copper Coast in South Australia. Apparently the venue is signed up for a further two years for this event. Debutants this year: State Side: Mason Lewis, Aaron Wilson and Corey Wedlock Under-25s: Jack Lewis and Dylan Riley Over-60s: Ian (Rocky) Stone, Lawrence (Mick) Parkinson and Peter Armstrong Milestones • Wayne Turley and Aron Sherriff advised they were moving to the warmer climates of Australia. • David Ferguson and Carl Healey reached the 100 State test games milestone during the year. • David Ferguson was awarded the NSW Bowler of the Year and named as the Bowls Australia Player of the Year. • Regrettably, during the year, BNSW lost a stalwart in Richie Clutterbuck, a very special contributor to the selection process. Lastly, I would like to place on record a special thank you to the other selectors, Mick Harry, Frank Schocher, Paul Russell and Jim Dowd, as well as all the Head Office staff for their dedication and support during the year.

N

SW claimed the Overall Champions Trophy of the 2018 Australian Sides Championships after toppling Victoria in both men’s and women’s contests. The Blues upstaged the undefeated Victorian men’s team in the final round which allowed the NSW team to surge to second on the standings and secure a silver medal. Victoria claimed the men’s Alley Shield honour a game clear of NSW, with Tasmania finishing in third spot. The Blues’ Mat Pietersen, Corey Wedlock, Aaron Teys and Aaron Wilson took out the best performed rink throughout the seven rounds, 20 shots better than their closest competitor also on six wins. The Blues have now secured the Overall Champions Trophy six times since its inception in 2008, two clear of Queensland. Alley Shield final standings: 1. VIC (6 wins), 2. NSW (5), 3. TAS (4, 14 rink-wins), 4. QLD (4, 11.5), 5. SA (4, 11.5), 6. WA (3), 7. NT (1), 8. ACT (0) Marj Morris Trophy final standings: 1. NSW (7 wins), 2. VIC (5), 3. QLD (4, 12 rink wins), 4. NT (4, 11), 5. owls NSW congratulates South Australia on their men’s team taking out the 2017 Australian Senior Sides title with a game in hand, having managed to go six matches undefeated; their only hiccup being a tied match with Victoria in the second round. After clinching the men’s championship, host state South Australia finished undefeated with a 6-0-1 record thanks to a 55-46 triumph over NSW. Not a glorious year for our senior Blues but they are leaner and keener to show their stuff at the 2018 Championships to again be held on South Australia’s Copper Coast.

NSW State Pennant Finals Grade 6

T

he final between Kempsey Macleay RSL and Taree Railway had all the promise of being the great final it turned out to be. Taree Railway had the two teams of Dave Crowe and Ray Cooper leading from the front being pegged back by

the Terry Orriss team from Kempsey. This latter team scored a 7 early on and a 6 later in the game. With two ends to go Taree Railway led by 11 shots only for Terry Orriss’s team to score a 6 on that end. That left a margin of 5 with one end left. However Craig Rahill’s team for Taree Railway were up to the test and saved the day with a 1 on the last end. Taree Railway won 65-59., Taree Railway took the honours over Kempsey Macleay RSL in the final. Taree Railway eliminated Nelson Bay in the semi-final while Kempsey Macleay RSL accounted for Uralla.

NSW State Pennant Finals Grade 7

G

rade 7 Pennants lived up to its well-earned reputation of a hard grade to win, being so competitive and with the high standard of bowls, given the number of teams now competing in Grades 5, 6 and 7. Both Taren Point and Engadine did

outstanding jobs as host venue clubs for the Rounds 1-3 sectional play. The wind and chill of Friday and Saturday abated for the semi-final played at Taren Point on Sunday morning between Woy Woy, NBC Sports, East Maitland and Taree Railway, with the winners of the semifinals being Woy Woy and Taree Railway. In the final Woy Woy got off to an early start but by mid game the aggregate board was even and by 54 ends it was Woy Woy 55 Taree Railway 49 with Woy Woy going on to win 64 - 60. Woy Woy had a large group of supporters adding to the atmosphere of the final and Taree Railway fielded six players in the 20 - 40 age group, a great experience for them and a promising future for the club.

Rookies 2017 Rookies Pairs Champions – Greg Musgrove & Pete Sumner - (Kurri Kurri, Zone 6)

T

he 2017 Rookies Pairs title has been won by the Kurri Kurri pair of Greg Musgrove and Peter Sumner over Aydan Murphy and Tim Cavanough (Corrimal). The opening half of the final was a see-sawing affair, with Musgrove consistently drawing close and Cavanough converting, Kurri with their nose ahead 6-5 after 6 ends. The Kurri duo took the ascendancy to lead 12-5 with four ends to go. The Corrimal pair looked to fight back into the match, holding shots on the 9th end before the Kurri skipper ripped the jack into the ditch and claimed 2 more shots to take a very firm grip on the final with a 14-5 lead. Kurri then tightened their stranglehold with Corrimal, chasing a big count to stay in the match, scoring a count of 3 to close out the match 19-5, Corrimal conceding the match with one end to play.

ohn Boumelhem (West Leagues) is the 2017 NSW Rookies Singles Champion, winning the final over Darren Conroy (Wagga Rules) at Raymond Terrace. Boumelhem had the better start to the final. Conroy scored a count of 4 to level the scores at 6-6 but Boumelhem then answered with a counts of 3, 1, 3 and 2 to seize control of the game at 15-6 and went on to take the title with a 17-7 win. Conroy advanced to the final as the survivor of a marathon semi-final. Conroy claimed the early lead over Tony Thurtell (Glenbrook Panthers) and was never headed, however the biggest lead of the game was four shots. Thurtell looked on the cusp of reaching the final when he scored two singles to have the game locked at 16-16 and both players needed just a single shot to progress to the final. It was Conroy who got the vital shot to claim the berth in the final.Boumelhem claimed his place in the final with a strong win over Terry Morrison (Westport). The Wests Leagues player set up his win with a dominant start to the game, winning the opening 4 ends to set up a 9-0 lead. From there Morrison kept his scoring even, but the strong start of Boumelhem allowed him to take the game 17-7.

David Ferguson (Engadine) held the advantage in the early stages, moving to a 10-5 lead before Aron Sherriff (Ettalong) won six ends in a row to lead 16-10. Ferguson then settled, moved back into the lead. The lead changed again with exchanges of trebles, but Sherriff won four consecutive to move out to 26-20. The players were locked into a great contest until Ferguson collected a treble to move to a 17-15 advantage and from there, Ferguson dominated the scoring. He won four consecutive ends and then ran away to a 31-21 victory. Sherriff confirmed his status as one of Australia’s elite players with a clinical performance against Lee Stinson (Orange Ex-Services Country Club). Stinson played well but Sherriff steamrolled to a 31-10 victory.

shley Mitchell and Carl Healey of Cabramatta have claimed the 2017 NSW State Pairs’ title. Lee Trethowan and Aron Sherriff were looking to secure an unprecedented hat-trick of titles in front of their home club crowd but the Cabramatta Bull Ants pair grabbed an early 8-2 advantage. Trethowan and Sherriff then appeared to be on a roll and well on their way to becoming the first pair to win three consecutive NSW State Pairs titles, a five-end winning streak taking them to a 10-8 lead. Mitchell and Healey then collected another big count giving them back the lead, but Sherriff regained the lead to take the score to 13-12 after 12 ends. Thirteen proved to be the unlucky number for the Ettalong Eagles, with the Bull Ants winning five ends in a row, to blow the game to 22-13. A single to Sherriff on the 18th end got them off 13 before a double to Healey had him lead 24-14 with 2 ends to play. Trethowan and Sherriff breathed life into the final and gave the home-crowd hope that their heroes would secure the historic third consecutive title. The task of scoring the big count proved too difficult with Healey capitalising to score 2 and take the title 26-20. Trethowan and Sherriff were in dynamite form for the start of their semi-final win over Stephen Philp and Phil Clarke (Penrith). massive lead of 24-1. The Penrith duo claimed some pride over the closing end to take the score to 3012 when the teams shook hands on an Ettalong win. Mitchell and Healey narrowly won the end count in their semi-final win over Stuart Hall and Josh Greenhalgh (Lismore Heights). The Cabramatta pair won 11 of the 21 ends played, but the story of the semi-final was the multiple counts scored. A count of 5, two of 4 and a 3 laid the basis for the Bull Ants to take the game 25-17. Both Mitchell and Healey have now won the State Pairs, Triples and Fours titles. Mitchell won the triples in 2015, while Healey won the Triples and Fours titles back to back in 2011 and 2012, Mitchell featuring in Healey’s Fours team on both occasions. Healey has also won the State Champion of Club Champions Pairs title twice (2012 with Cameron Curtis and 2014 with Ray Pearse).

elrose put in a dominant performance over Port City to be crowned 2017 NSW State Triples Champions. Crawford Linton, Matt Blackburn and Steve Rawlings (Belrose) had all the answers against Bryce Stewart, Callum Murray and Jack Lewis (Port City). They led by 11 shots after 8 ends. From there the Port City combination kept pace, but could not make a significant dent in the margin. The experience of Steve Rawlings at skip showed. He played superb class shots to hold the young Koalas at bay. Belrose booked their place in the final with a strong performance against Wallacia (Steve Wilcock, Mick Thorne and Matt Slager). Belrose won the start, leading 11-7 after 8 ends and proceeded to take a stranglehold on the game with a run of 7 winning ends to stretch to a 21-7 lead. The momentum swung back to the Tuncurry Beach boys leading 22-14, with only 2 ends remaining a seemingly match-winning lead. Port City rose to the pressure on the final end, drawing four shots and just missing out on an umpire’s measure for the fifth, sending the game to a sudden death extra end. The extra end started with Bryce Stewart nailing the jack and Port City establishing great position. Tuncurry Beach disturbed the head but Jack Lewis piled on the pressure, drawing a front toucher with his last bowl. Gray made the most of his opportunities in the opening stages, leading 18-8 and then 24-13 before Forster piled on the pressure, forcing Gray to start running at the head. Forster won five consecutive ends to trail 25-26. Scores were then locked at 27-27 and then 2828. Gray appeared to have the advantage edging to 29, but Forster capitalised on a wayward end from Gray to score a 3 and claim the match 31-29. Gray dominated his encounter with Wayne O’Neill (Lansdowne) to record a 31-12 victory while Forster ground out a tough win over Reg Harris (Sylvania). Harris had established an early 10-5 lead but Forster fought back to lead 11-10. Harris then took a firm grip on the game, winning 5 ends in a row to establish a 20-11 advantage. avid Ferguson (Engadine) is the 2017 NSW State Champion of Club Champions Singles winner, claiming a hard fought final win over Dylan Riley (Forster) at Kiama Bowling Club. Ferguson, the 2017 NSW State Singles Runner Up and 2017 Australian Indoor Singles winner, appeared in control over the opening ends of the final, leading 6-0 after 2 ends and then going on to lead 10-3. Riley then found his range and dominated the next stages to take the lead 12-11. Riley gained the advantage when he won 5 consecutive ends to ease out to a 22-16 lead, but Ferguson clawed his way back to level terms at 25 shots apiece. Riley scored a 2 to be within one end of victory (needing a full count) and appeared to be well on track to do so before Ferguson played a sensational running shot to take the jack to the ditch and get the game back on level terms at 27-27. Ferguson scored a pair of singles to lead 29-27 before Riley grabbed a double to lock the scores up yet again, 29 all. Ferguson held his nerve to convert 1 down to collect a double and claim the championship.

56

David Ferguson & Dylan Riley Riley qualified for the final with a gutsy 31-24 win over Gerard Beath (Cowra). Beath appeared to be gaining the upper hand after scoring a single and triple to edge to a lead of 8-3 before Riley seized control, winning 6 consecutive ends to hold a 17-8 advantage. In the next stage of the game Beath clawed back to trail 18-22. Riley scored 6 shots in 3 ends to gain a 10-shot lead. Beath then ensured an exciting finish with six consecutive singles closing Riley’s lead to 28-24. Riley, the 2017 Australian Indoor Singles semi-finalist, closed out the game with a single and double to win 31-24. Ferguson took control in the opening stages of his semi-final against Scott Hamilton (Inverell East). He led 5-0 in the early ends and then ran out to a 20-5 lead. Hamilton threatened the miracle comeback, fighting his way back to trail 13-22 but from that point Ferguson ran on to record a 31-19 victory.

21 - 24 November 2017

Ray Pearse & Corey Wedlock

C

orey Wedlock and Ray Pearse (Cabramatta) captured the 2017 NSW Champion of Club Champions Pairs title, winning the final 28-8. Wedlock and Pearse, semi-finalists in 2016, were in sublime form in the final. Peter Harry and Mick Harry (Wenty Leagues) played excellent bowls but the Bull Ants duo had all the answers. After the first end was killed twice, Wedlock and Pearse opened the scoring with a count of 5 and then raced to a 21-3 lead after 10 ends. When the score reached 28-8 after 15 ends, the game was conceded. Wedlock and Pearse booked their place in the final with a polished win over Peter Swan and Matt Sargeant (Tuncurry Beach). The Cabramatta duo got their noses in front when they won three consecutive ends to lead 7-2 after 7 ends. From that point the teams traded ends. The defining moment of the semi-final was a count of 6 to Cabramatta on the 13th end, pushing the lead out to 16-7. With neither team able to win consecutive ends, Wedlock

Mick Harry & Peter Harry and Pearse protected their advantage and ran out 21-14 winners. Harry and Harry qualified for the final after a shoot-out with Jon Dimopoulos and Simon Mitchell (Maitland City). The Maitland City combination made all the running in the opening stages, winning 7 of the opening 9 ends to lead 8-2. A run of four successful ends for the Harrys brought the score to 8-7. Mitchell scored a single on the 14th end before the Wenty Leagues duo had another run of four winning ends to lead 12-9 after 18 ends. A single on the 19th end closed the score to 12-10. The Harrys gained the upper hand with a treble to lead by 5 shots with one end to play. A single was scored to take the final score to 15-11.

J U N I O R R E P O R T

66

J

unior bowls in New South Wales has had another successful year in 2017-18. Our representative teams have performed extremely well. There has been a definitive changing of the guard, with multiple debutants coming into the squads for the major competitions. Our high-performance endeavours have proven to be effective. We have had great participation from our squad members in all squad activities. Our juniors continue to perform well against other states, which is clear when reading the results included in this Annual Report. This year has been a year of change as we adjust our efforts on development to embrace all juniors of all abilities into our sport. Our framework for success will look to focus on bringing in new players throughout the State, as we look to new members to boost our small

numbers of juniors participating. Education and development for our junior squad has been successful through Training Camps and Regional Training Days, with player mentoring opportunities from more experienced players being provided. It is quite clear that no matter what the age, our juniors are craving more knowledge about our great game and through our vastly experienced committee, they are always able to attain this knowledge. The year could not have been successful without the efforts of Gary Willis, Sharyn Renshaw and John Rodis. The continual support for all juniors from these committee members is evidenced by the trust that our juniors place in this supportive group. Since taking over this role in late March 2018, I have looked to encourage all juniors of all abilities to stick with our great sport. If we can maintain our current stock of juniors with a look to growing our numbers substantially through school-based programs, after school and weekend participation programs, we may just reinvigorate junior bowls across our State. It will be a journey that Bowls NSW needs to take with each club and Zone by their side. I look forward to continuing my hard work for Bowls NSW and the bowlers in NSW. Although the junior bowls world is a tricky environment to work in, I look forward to the challenge of growing junior numbers and getting more juniors into our clubs across the state.

NSW U-18 Representative Test

T

he young stars of New South Wales and Queensland bowls convened at Taren Point Bowling Club 3-4 July 2017 to battle for bragging rights in their annual Under 18 Interstate Series. NSW went into the Series with 6 of the 10 players who were part of the NSW domination of the 2016 Australian Junior Championships which included a clean sweep of side trophies (Boys, Girls and Overall). The 6 Australian Champions (Toby Peters, Jayden Gebbie, Jono Davis, Louise Cronan, Kate Matthews and Brianna Smith) were joined by Zac Corr-Johnson (St Johns Park), Lachlan Freeman (Raymond Terrace), Hayley McDonnell (Halekulani) and Jessica Smith (St Johns Park), all playing their first Series in the much-cherished NSW Blues uniform. With the Series played in NSW, Michael Phillips (Merrylands), Brittany Camp (Armidale Ex-Services) and Haylee Ross (Glen Innes) joined the side as reserves.

Played over two days the Series featured four sessions on Monday, the first and second tests. As the players hit the greens in the morning the temperature was down near the single digits but the players started heating things up on the green as they hit top gear not long after the start. Heaters were rolled out for crowd comfort but the display of bowls produced by the boys and girls from either side of the border was enough to keep the eyes fixated to the green and minds away from the single digit comfort provided by the overcast windy day. NSW Boys started where they left off at Nationals losing just 1 match out of 8 on the opening day and by the smallest of margins (1 shot). This dominance also secured the Test Series before the final test on the Tuesday. Although the NSW Girls were the reigning Australian Champions, the QLD Girls won the Series Shield for this event last year, added to the determination of fighting back from the Australian Championship defeat, they were not going to let go of the Interstate Shield without a fight. A fight is just what they delivered, from the opening few ends on the Monday morning the QLD girls produced a very impressive team performance. The NSW Girls fought hard and continued to deliver bowls of a high standard but to the credit of the QLD side they repelled all NSW had to offer claiming 6 of the 8 matches throughout the day to also claim an unassailable lead in the Series, leading two tests to nil heading into the Tuesday and third (final) test. With the third test being a dead rubber for both Boys and Girls, the NSW and QLD selectors made some side changes. QLD opted for a few changes amongst their original playing squad while NSW decided to inject the reserves into the playing mix and give them some experience on the Interstate scene. Brittany Camp moved into the Girls Triples, Haylee Ross into the Girls Fours as Michael Phillips played in both the Boys Pairs and Triples. All players recording a win in their debuts for NSW. NSW had the best of the third test overall with the Girls winning 3-1 and the Boys all square with QLD. Overall, NSW Boys clinched their Series 2 ½ tests to ½ test as the QLD Girls retained their shield with a 2 tests to 1 victory.

Brett Duprez Development Series

I

t was a hugely successful year for the Brett Duprez Development Series at Taren Point this year. Sydney South West (Zone 12) took out first place in the 2018 Brett Duprez Development Series played at Taren Point BC (20 May). Sides of seven players took part representing each of 8 sides (NSW Boys, NSW Girls, Sydney South West Zone 12, Hunter Academy, Central Coast Zone 15, Greater Western Sydney Zone 5, Illawarra Zone 16 and Sydney Central & Southern Zone 13). It was a historic year for Zone 5 who were invited to compete

in this years competition after many year’s of hard work and dedication to their Junior Development Programs. Each match was played as a side consisting of a singles game, pairs game and fours game and the 8 sides were divided into 2 pools. The best performed side in each pool played off for the winners trophy, while the 2nd best performed played off for third and fourth, each side playing off for a finishing position. As the sun was setting at Taren Point Bowling Club, Sydney South West pipped Hunter Academy in a hard fought final. Hunter took out the pairs contest while Sydney South West claimed victories in the singles and fours. Bowls NSW would like to extend their gratitude to the Jackeroos and National Training Centre squad members who took time out of their busy schedules to mentor and play with sides during the Brett Duprez Development Series. Samantha Noronha, Natalie Noronha, David Ferguson and Ray Pearse all showed their dedication to the sport by mentoring and coaching our future stars.

The final saw Zac Corr-Johnson became the first ever player to clean sweep the NSW State Junior Championships, taking the Singles, Pairs and Fours titles in the finals at Warilla. Lord and Corr-Johnson won the opening two ends, but a count of four on the third end handed the lead to Matthews and Freeman. They pushed the lead out to 8-3 after 5 ends before a fightback over the next two ends saw the lead chopped to 8-7. Both Matthews and Freeman then lifted their game, putting Corr-Johnson under constant pressure. The Novocastrians edged ahead, winning 4 of the next 5 ends to lead 13-9. A further count of 2 on the 13th end added to the pressure stretching the lead to 15-9, a lead of 6 with 2 ends to play. A count of 3 on the penultimate end closed the scores to 15-12 and saw the St Johns Park boys hunting for a count of at least 3 on the final end to keep their hopes alive. A trail shot from Josh Lord had the St Johns Park pair holding three shots, a count to which they added to be holding a match lie with Freeman having one bowl left to play, but Freeman sailed wide past the head, leaving the game and title to Lord and Corr-Johnson.

he Sydney South West combination of Corey Hedges (St Johns Park), Gray Hemington (Canterbury T&B), Zac Corr- Johnson (St Johns Park) and Jono Davis (Mt Lewis) started strongly, leading 6-2 after 5 ends had been played. The Sydney North West combination of Jack McShane (Denistone Sports), Michael Phillips (Merrylands), Andrew Watkins (The Hills) and Jordon Peisley (Northmead) then fought their way

back into the final, getting to the lead 9-7 after 9 ends. The Davis skipped foursome then scored 4 shots in the next two ends to lead 12-9 and then grabbed a huge advantage with a count of 6 on the 14th end to lead 18-9. The teams exchanged singles before Peisley’s team claimed a count of 3 on the 16th end to trail 13-9 and keep their hopes alive. Peisley collected a double on 18th end to trail 15-20 and stay in touch and looked to be ready to storm home. Davis ended that momentum when he played a sensational draw to claim shot and move out to a 21-19 lead with 2 ends to play. With Peisley looking for a multiple count, Davis cruelled their hopes by running the jack into the ditch, pushing the lead to 7 shots. With the jack in the ditch and 2 of Peisley’s bowls out of play, the game was over - final score 22-16. 2017 -2018 Bowls NSW Annual Report and Year Book

Drakes Pride Carnival Club Windang, 5-8 July 2017

T

he Bowls NSW Drakes Pride Junior Carnival was held over four fantastic days at Club Windang, 5-8 July 2017. Club Windang was once again the perfect backdrop for the event which features a different event on each of the four days, an overall Player of the Carnival and the Greg Helm ‘Spirit of Bowls’ Award. Over 50 juniors competed in open Pairs on the first day of the carnival, playing three rounds and creating plenty of new friendships. Following the three rounds only 5 teams were undefeated and in the runner up position wre the young joeys from Club Dubbo, Adam Ball and James Robinson. The winners fresh off their victory in the NSW v QLD Interstate Series were Lachlan Freeman and Toby Peters. Singles was the discipline played on the second day as the juniors were split into Under-15 Boys, Under-18 Boys and Girls events. Each event consisted of sectional play and then 3 end shootouts for the quarters, semis and finals. As the shootouts began it was great to see all the spectators and players surround the finals green with over 150 in total watching on. After some classic draw

shots, big drives and clutch last bowls the winners were Jack McShane (Under-15 Boys), Tyson Arneman (Under-18 Boys) and Brittney Ross (Girls). With the event focused on creating opportunities for juniors to play, meet other juniors from across NSW and play with juniors of all levels, the third day was a single-entry event where the juniors play pairs with different partners and against different teams each round. The format of 2-4-2 pairs gave everyone the chance to lead and skip throughout each game and created the opportunity for the new juniors to play different shots and experience the role of skipping a team. Tim Walsh was the victor of the day. He was one of four undefeated players but finished with a superior shot difference. The final day of the event was a special day for all involved. As the event coincides with NAIDOC Week, each year Bowls NSW celebrate the week with the juniors. NAIDOC Week wristbands are given to all participants, Bowls NSW Indigenous Hall of Fame inductees were announced and the juniors plus their supporters were invited to join in a smoking and flag raising c eremony at Club Windang, as part of the celebration and education of NAIDOC Week. Following the Ceremonies the players competed in turnaround Triples (playing a different position each round) with the team of Josh Lord, Cody Griffin and Brittany Camp took the honours on the final day. With points given to every participant in each event, plus extra points for finishing in the top four, a Player of the Carnival is awarded each year. The 2017 winner was Toby Peters, the first boy winner following a string of 3 girl winners over the first 3 years of the event. Just as important as the ‘Player of The Carnival’ award is the Greg Helm ‘Spirit of Bowls’ Award named after Bowls NSW CEO and former NSW Junior State Singles winner Greg Helm. The award recognises a player who demonstrates the spirit of bowls throughout the event both on and off the green. Local junior Daniel Davies received this year’s award which was presented by Greg Helm. Daniel was a keen bowler throughout the four-day event, polite, encouraging and always offering a hand to help. Bowls NSW thanks the event supporters Drakes Pride, Zone 16 and Club Windang. Club Windang continue to host the event with a welcoming approach each year. David Tyrell (Bowls Coordinator) and his team of volunteers (markers and umpires) make sure no stone is left unturned to deliver a great event for all involved.

CHS Report

N

SW Combined High Schools had a successful program of events during 2017. In addition to the State level events, the ten educational sporting Associations within NSW organised and hosted numerous local competitions and continue to strongly develop the game within NSW public secondary schools. The 16th annual State Championships was hosted by Orange City BC. Western emerged victors on their home turf with a resounding win over South Coast in the final. No Sydney region has ever won the Championships, but best performed was Sydney West who lost narrowly to a composite North Coast side in the bronze medal play-off. The best performed skip was Josh Lord from Sydney South West who was undefeated from seven games. Western’s Tyron Pennell was named Player of the State Championships. The Exchange event was again hosted by Port Macquarie City Bowling Club. CHS fielded three representative sides

each of 5 players. Bowls NSW had a side each of boys and girls, and Zone 5 provided a Development Side. NSW U-18s emerged victorious after 11 games to claim the Neville Schwartz Shield for the second consecutive time after a seven-year drought. This was the 15th and last exchange between CHS and NSW U-18s – NSW CHS will begin an interstate event in Melbourne in 2018. Lachlan Freeman (NSW U-18s) was named Player of the Carnival from Josh Lord (NSWCHS). The Singles was won by Jono Davis (NSW U-18s); the Pairs by Brianna Smith and Jayden Gebbie (NSWCHS); the Triples by Michael Phillips, Connor Freeman and Toby Peters (NSWCHS); the Fours by NSW’s Heath Walker, Jordan Peisley, Tailor Appleby and Lachlan Freeman. The Boys and Girls Singles and Pairs Championships were hosted by Warilla. This was the seventh year of this event for the boys. The Girls have been playing since 2007. Held concurrently, this was a logistical success with three full greens and nearly 100 games on each day, with players competing for all positions in the Top 32. Day 1 saw poor weather force the event indoors. The Singles were won by Toby Peters (South Coast) and Jessica Smith (Sydney South West) respectively with the runners-up being Jayden Gebbie (South Coast) and Brianna Smith (Sydney South West). The Boys Pairs saw Michael Phillips (Sydney West) and Bailey Meti (Sydney North) defeat the Western Pairing of Tyron Pennell and James Robinson. The Girls Pairs was an all Sydney South West affair with Brianna Smith and Mia Hotson defeating sisters Jasmine and Tameaka Hedges in the final. The Player of the Championships was won by Toby Peters in the boys and Brianna Smith in the Girls. The CHS State Knockout Triples Finals were hosted by Temora. The final 16 schools are determined by Regional playoffs – each Region receives one qualifier, with a second coming from each of the top 6 performing Regions from the previous year’s State Carnival. Warilla High were the Champions for the fourth consecutive year (each with a different combination). This year their side was skipped by Jayden Gebbie. Runners-up were the Hunter River High trio skipped by Zac Nicholls.

Volunteer of the Year

T

he Bowls NSW Volunteer of the Year award, announced on the night we honour our top bowlers of the year, gives recognition to those who unstintingly give of their time and skills. Each bowling community which benefits from their generosity is supremely aware of the difference these people make to the vitality of their club. A massive thank you to the entire Bowls NSW volunteer community. And thank you to those who nominated their local champion. Finalists for the 2017 Volunteer of the Year:

Warren Whyte – Wagga RSL Since 2010, Warren has raised approximately $25,000 for the children’s ward at the local hospital. He helps to run a BBQ every month and organises pies from a local bakery for a weekly fundraising. Warren contacts local businesses regularly to sponsor tournaments and events and donations as well as organizing PR and media coverage of club events with local media. Warren makes himself available for any duty within the club. He encourages all club members to attend functions and participate in any way that they can. He also regularly assists the greenkeepers top dressing the greens and general green maintenance, which is a job all in itself.

84

2017 Volunteer of the Year winner Ken Douglass Ken Douglass – North Epping This small community club remains viable because of volunteers like Ken providing substantial cost savings via donation of their management skills. Since joining the club in 2004 he has taken on a host of roles, as a member of the executive to overall club management, supervising bar staff, greenkeepers and contractors. His energy is boundless. If staff are sick he will mow, roll and water the greens, or work behind the bar. He will clean and fix anything he can to save hiring a contractor, and regularly organises working bees with club members. Ken organises regular social functions and special seasonal events. He has also successfully submitted several grant applications for club projects. Ken has been a central figure in the development of the club’s multi-purpose sports courts, currently under construction. This significant development will benefit both the club and the North Epping community for years to come. Ken has been a driving force for membership, setting up and running mini competitions and school programs as well as creating a family-friendly environment at the club. 2017 -2018 Bowls NSW Annual Report and Year Book

Volunteer of the Year John and Ron Davis - Peak Hill John and Ron Davis have volunteered their time as the club’s greenkeepers from before 2013, working daily to maintain the club’s two greens. The club would not be able to function without John and Ron providing this vital service. On top of this they organise a program for local school kids and run the barefoot bowls days. Being a small town, the bowling club hosts many wakes and Ron and John are always on hand to help out with these functions in any way they can.

Ken Dixon – Woy Woy During his tenure as chairman in 2003, Ken successfully kept the club alive during a period of receivership. For over two decades Ken has coordinated the monthly charity bowls events which has raised in excess of $297,000 for Child Flight and $80,000 for Central Coast Kids in Need, a charity helping families with seriously ill children. Following retirement from full time employment, Ken took on the challenge of increasing bowling activity by promoting Wednesday morning bowls. This is now a thriving activity which brings in many more bowlers each week. Ken assists around the club in ways too numerous to mention and has been recognised by his own club with the award of life member.

Ernie Tink – Dubbo Railway Ernie Joined Dubbo Railway to find sportsmanship and friendship and subsequently fell in love with the game of bowls. He is the first to put his hand up to mark, cook, clean, sell tickets, help with functions, help out on tournament days and assist the bowls and bar staff - wherever there is a need. Ernie does not allow his neurodegenerative disorder override his giving his all to the club and his peers believe this selfless attitude epitomises greatness and generosity, truly worthy of recognition. At the Player Awards evening, in front of peers and supporters, Stephanie Crow of NeuRA presented North Epping’s Ken Douglass with the 2017 Volunteer of the Year award. Ken accepted the award, acknowledging his fellow finalists and all those who go the extra distance.

There are two ways to nominate – either via the Request for Recognition Awards section of the Application for Official Representation form or via the dedicated Volunteer of the Year Award nomination form released in September each year.

Bowling for Better Balance

I

n April 2018 the inaugural Bowling for Better Balance Challenge was launched with enthusiasm by Bowls NSW in partnership with NeuRA to support research into better balance for bowlers. The aim is for clubs to commit to supporting this research so that bowlers can be the beneficiaries of greater knowledge about their stability and so prevent falls. Research has proven the greatest change to the pattern of healthy aging comes with a fall. Research has also shown these falls ARE preventable with proper exercise training as we age and strive to maintain mobility and good balance. At NeuRA they have developed a number of programs to help prevent falls amongst older Australians. These programs offer simple yet effective strategies that people can do at home to improve mobility, stability and to rehabilitate after a fall. The structure of the event was designed to minimise

administrative demands on club vlunteers and staff. This is an opportunity for clubs to enter into a partnership so falls prevention research can be disseminated to our membership and support them with healthy aging – keeping them bowling for longer. To date there have been generous donations from bowling clubs across the state with a major contribution from Northmead Bowling Club who dedicated the month to NeuRA support. At their Anzac service they paid tribute to the work being done to research healthy aging. Please lend your support to NeuRA as we endeavour to help you age well. Next year will see the challenge go nationwide and it is hoped that there will be a wider take up by clubs as they become more familiar with this new partnership. Members have been invited to join balance studies at NeuRA and a good working partnership is being established. In the first year of this program the following clubs conducted a Bowling for Better Balance event, raising a combined total of $6440: • New Lambton Bowling Club • Charlestown Bowling Club • Davistown RSL Bowling Club • Kingswood Men’s’ Bowling Club • Double Bay Bowling Club • NBC Sports Club • Mosman Bowling Club • Belrose Bowling Club • Bowls NSW Social Bowlers (General Services Committee) Our partnership with NeuRA will be ongoing If you are interested in bowling and aging well or would like to host a Bowling for Better Balance day contact bowls@neura.edu.au

N

BC Sports‘ decision to take part in this endeavour by Bowls NSW and NeuRA came just as the Bowling for Better Balance fundraising campaign was launched. One of the club life members and patron suffered a fall and his health declined considerably so his story became part of NBC Sports‘ mission to do something positive for their members. On Wednesday the social bowls program is run largely for mature aged bowlers so it was agreed to put all green fees paid during April aside for the fundraiser. The ladies‘ club followed suit and they put all their green fees collected on their Thursday schedule during April toward the fundraiser. In addition to their fundraising efforts NBC Sports arranged for Bolton Clarke, who offers specialised services for independent living health and wellbeing, to run an

Bowling for Better Balance at NBC Sports

in-house seminar on trip hazards and fall prevention for club members. Finally on Anzac Day, a big day out at NBC Sports club, there was a BBQ breakfast, social bowls and then an Anzac service. Judy Dixon from NeuRA spoke to the members about the NeuRA‘s work which she did so eloquently. Following her speech there was a whip-around and the members donated generously to assist the club‘s donation from green fees.
