THIS IS MY TEAM Hi, I’m Karen Murphy and this photo demonstrates how much I love playing bowls and being in a winning team. I am very fortunate, I have been playing since I was 11 years old and I first represented Australia when I was 22. I have played over 600 Tests for my country. My bowls career has taken me all around the world and I have met the most wonderful people involved in bowls. I recently competed in my 5th Commonwealth Games and representing Australia is a dream come true. It is a real emotional and exciting experience. I have also had the pleasure of visiting a lot of clubs throughout Australia, we have a fantastic sport and I am passionate about doing all I can to benefit bowls and help our sport grow. During these years I have closely been associated with BCIB and I am proud to be one of their ambassadors. BCIB provide amazing support for our sport and have sponsored and promoted bowls for over 30 years.

There is no need to wait until your insurance is due, send your contact information in plenty of time to conduct a thorough review.

BCIB currently manage the insurance for over 700 clubs in Australia, if you are one of those clubs I thank you for being one of our valued clients.

I can personally assure you that allowing BCIB to be involved in your clubs insurance is the right decision. They have been working with our sport for over 30 years.

From The President of Bowls Australia, Darryl Clout

On behalf of the Board and staff of Bowls Australia, it gives me great pleasure in welcoming you back to the City of Gold Coast for the 2019 Asia Pacific Championships.

is of

welcome

With the return of the event to Australian shores, last held here in Adelaide in 2011, I’m looking forward to two weeks of world class bowling action from the 19 participating nations. We trust that the travelling nations, their players, staff, officials and supporters, will enjoy all that the sunny Gold Coast has to offer and the hospitality of our host venues. I would like to express my sincere thanks to the three clubs, Broadbeach, Club Helensvale and Musgrave Hill, and their members, for their contribution in hosting this prestigious event. The clubs and their band of volunteers have done a spectacular job behind the scenes preparing their facilities and magnificent greens to share with the world’s best players. To the officials and volunteers who will be working

tirelessly over the course of the event, I also thank you for your invaluable services and contribution to the sport of bowls. I trust you will enjoy your involvement and the opportunity to be close to the action. Finally, I would like to thank Bowls Australia’s wonderful partners whose continued support and contributions ultimately allow us to stage such renowned events. In particular, I wish to make special mention of Sport Australia, Commonwealth Games Australia, Australian Institute of Sport, City of Gold Coast, Tourism and Events Queensland, Domina BCiB, Stockland Retirement Living, Bolton Clarke, BLK and MakMax. I trust the 2019 Asia Pacific Championships will exceed your expectations. Good luck to the competitors and I’m sure they will be doing their nations proud. Darryl Clout Bowls Australia President

CONTINUE THEIR

GOLD RUSH F

eaturing competitors from 19 countries, the 2019 Asia Pacific Championships will showcase some of the world’s best bowlers on arguably the world’s best greens on the Gold Coast. Australia will be eager to continue their recent gold rush in Commonwealth Games and World Championships, but with the likes of Malaysia, New Zealand and Canada among the field, it will be no easy feat.

Former captain Lynsey Clarke headlines three new inclusions named in the BCiB Australian Jackaroos team selected to don the green and gold in this year’s instalment of the event. Clarke, 35, returns to the

The Trans Tasman Test Series in November 2017 was the last international outing for 328-game stalwart Clarke, with the Queenslander well-equipped to make an immediate impact in familiar surrounds, with her own Club Helensvale, Broadbeach and Musgrave Hill Bowls Clubs the three host venues for the event.

Following a standout year in 2018, which included a maiden national title in the form of the Australian Championships’ singles crown in December, Pearse has been handed the plum blue-ribbon singles position, while counterpart Kelsey Cottrell will return to singles duty for the first time since the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Meanwhile, rising star Teys, 25, has secured a spot as one of the main five men for the first time, having only previously represented Australia as a part of extended squads in three events. Unsurprisingly, Australia’s golden girls, who collected the triples and fours gold medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games have also cemented their spots, with the aforementioned Cottrell, Carla Krizanic, Rebecca Van Asch and Natasha Scott hoping for yet another fruitful international campaign. Van Asch will steer the triples, as skip of an unchanged line-up from GC2018, while Scott will again take command of the fours, which now features Clarke as lead, Krizanic as second and Van Asch as third. Bolstering the men’s line-up are three proven combatants, who all claimed silver medals at last year’s Commonwealth Games,

with Club Helensvale’s Aron Sherriff skipping the triples and fours, teammate Nathan Rice taking the reins of the pairs, and Melbourne’s Barrie Lester leading for Sherriff. Looking to rain on Australia’s parade on their home soil will be a number of strong bowling nations, with many of their players having experienced the Gold Coast conditions during last year’s Commonwealth Games. New Zealand have recalled a number of players into a re-jigged squad, with Wendy Jensen, Kirsten Edwards, Gary Lawson and Jamie Hill all returning to the national fold. Lawson is a eight-time Asia Pacific Championships medallist, with Ali Forsyth (five) not far behind and also included in the squad. Further boosted by familiar faces in Jo Edwards, Val Smith, Shannon McIlroy, and Broadbeach local Katelyn Inch, the Kiwis will be a strong force on the Gold Coast.

Elsewhere and the remaining 17 nations are littered with talent. For Canada, Ryan Bester and Kelly McKerihen are well known to the sport, both former World Championship medallists, while rising star Pricilla Westlake is a former World Youth Championships gold medallist. The Malaysians are spearheaded by three-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist Siti Zalina Ahmad, having tasted success at last year’s Games on the Gold Coast with pairs partner Emma Firyana Saroji, who unfortunately was a late withdrawal for this event. 2018 Commonwealth Games bronze medallists Hadyn Evans and Ryan Dixon have been included again for Norfolk Island, with Australian-based bowler Carmen Anderson also among their ranks. The 2019 Asia Pacific Championships are also a qualifying event for the 2020 World Bowls Championships, to be staged at the same venues in May/June next year.
