aría Freire (Montevideo, 7 de noviembre de 1917 - id. 19 de junio de 2015) pintora, escultora y crítica de arte uruguaya de gran incidencia en el arte concreto y no figurativo de su país. Formada en pintura y escultura en el Círculo de Bellas Artes de Montevideo con José Cuneo Perinetti y Severino Pose y luego en la Universidad del Trabajo del Uruguay con Antonio Pose. Comenzó a explorar el universo de la modernidad a través de máscaras africanas y piezas precolombinas y partir de 1946 incursionó en la abstracción con tendencia planista y geométrica en sus pinturas a la vez que realizaba esculturas móviles con materiales no convencionales. Cuando conoció a José Pedro Costigliolo en 1952, ambos venían en una búsqueda común del camino de su expresión artística. La pareja comenzó compartiendo el taller y viajes de estudio y luego se casaron. Juntos crearon el Grupo de Arte No Figurativo. En 1953 visitó la II Bienal de Arte de San Pablo, donde tuvo su primer contacto con las vanguardias artísticas del momento, conoció obras de Piet Mondrian, Theo Van Doesburg y Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart, entre otros, y afianzó su camino en el arte concreto no figurativo. En 1957 Freire y Costigliolo recibieron la beca “Gallinal” con la que viajaron a Europa y realizaron estudios en el Museo Stedelijk y en el Museo del Louvre con Bernard Dorival y André Varagnac. En 1966 María volvió a Europa en misión oficial para proseguir con sus estudios. Entre 1962 y 1973 estuvo a cargo de la columna de crítica de arte del diario Acción y fue profesora de Dibujo en Enseñanza Secundaria y de Historia y Cultura Artística en Preparatorios de Arquitectura en Colonia del Sacramento, donde entabló amistad con Rhod Rothfuss y Gyula Kosice, figuras claves del movimiento Madí. También tuvo contacto con las agrupaciones abstracto-concretas incentivadas por Aldo Pellegrini en la Argentina y gran afinidad con los artistas concretos y neoconcretos brasileños, como Amílcar de Castro, Lygia Pape, Lygia Clark y Hélio Oiticica, pero realizó su propio recorrido
de maduración en la abstracción. La artista trabajó en series, tomando la propuesta de color, los ritmos y las formas puras como tema en sí mismos. Entre 1958 y 1960 desarrolló la serie “Sudamericana”, en la que empleaba planos poligonales con una reducida paleta. En los años siguientes experimentó con una paleta cromática más expresiva, con perforaciones del plano y signos, de la que resultaron las series “Capricornio” y “Córdoba”. En la serie “Vibrante”, trabajada entre 1975 y 1985, la búsqueda estuvo relacionada con la luz, a comienzos de los 90, en la serie “El oro de los tigres” desarrolló estructuras oscuras sobre fondos amarillos y para finales de los 90 la geometría avanzó en la estructura de sus pinturas, dejando trascender la sensualidad del color. Entre 1954 y 1992 realizó 17 exposiciones individuales en Montevideo, Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Río de Janeiro, Barcelona, Bruselas y Washington. Integró numerosas muestras colectivas y participó en bienales internacionales. En 1966 representó a Uruguay en la XXXIII Bienal de Venecia. En sus obras aparece reiteradamente el mismo motivo, armado de diferentes maneras y con un encadenamiento rítmico aleatorio. Los signos repetidos de manera seriada crean una “constante icónica” en su obra. Contornos nítidos y colores planos entrecruzan lo sensible con lo racional. A partir del año 2000 realizó esculturas de gran escala para espacios públicos. La dupla creativa con su marido, con sus caminos expresivos propios pero orientados en el mismo sentido, hacen que sus nombres siempre aparezcan asociados. Costigliolo falleció en 1985 y fue un gran golpe para ella la pérdida de su compañero de arte y de vida. Fue una de las artistas de más larga carrera en Uruguay y un referente ineludible del arte geométrico del Río de la Plata. Obras de su autoría integran las colecciones del Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales, Museo Juan Manuel Blanes, Museo de Arte Moderno de São Paulo, Museo de Arte Moderno de Río de Janeiro, Museo Reina Sofía y diferentes colecciones públicas y privadas de arte latinoamericano.

osé Pedro Costigliolo (Montevideo, 6 de noviembre de 1902 - id. 3 de junio de 1985) pintor uruguayo y precursor del arte no figurativo. Estudió con Vicente Puig y Guillermo Laborde en el Círculo de Bellas Artes entre 1921 y 1925. Fue fundador del Grupo de Arte No-figurativo en 1952 junto a su esposa María Freire. Entre 1957 y 1959 se especializó en la técnica del vitral en Europa, usufructuando una beca obtenida en el III Salón Bienal de Artes Plásticas. Investigador y precursor de la estética concreta no figurativa, sus composiciones geométricas se caracterizan por una creciente simplificación. Adhiere con entusiasmo las teorías de los constructivistas rusos y los neoplasticistas holandeses. Expuso en el Museo de Arte Moderno de San Pablo (1956), Museo de Arte Moderno de Río de Janeiro (1957), Ateneo Barcelonés, Barcelona (1958), Unión Panamericana, Washington (1966), etc. En 1983 realizó una gran muestra retrospectiva organizada por la Intendencia de Montevideo y otra exposición individual en la Alianza Francesa. A lo largo de su carrera participó en numerosas exposiciones en su país y el exterior y recibió premios en concursos y salones de arte como el 1er. Premio en el concurso de Afiches de Palacio de la Música (1929), 1er. Premio de acuarela y la Beca de Pintura en el III Salón Bienal Nacional (1957), 1er. Premio Medalla de Oro del Salón Nacional (1966), entre otros. Obras de su autoría integran destacadas colecciones de arte latinoamericano como la Colección Essex, Cifo y Cisneros Fontanal, así como el acervo de museos como Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales de Montevideo, Museo Juan Manuel Blanes, Museo de Arte Moderno de São Paulo, Museo de Arte Moderno de Río de Janeiro, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (Madrid) y Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, entre otros.

TERMS OF SALE
Las obras de arte y demás objetos que se rematan han sido exhibidos y anunciados con anticipación suficiente a fin de los interesados y compradores pudieran examinarlos y revisar su condición, habiendo podido, igualmente, estudiar sus antecedentes, documentación, si la hubiera, averías u otros defectos.
All the items to be sold at auction have been displayed and listed in advance, so as to allow prospective buyers and other interested parties to view them, check their condition, study their history and any pertinent documentation, and examine them for damage or other defects.
El vendedor y la firma rematadora se eximen de toda responsabilidad sobre la autenticidad de las obras, firmas, escuelas, títulos, fechas, etc. aunque fueran establecidas en el catálogo, en las propias obras, sean mencionadas en el momento del remate o en su publicidad previa o en los certificados técnicos que se hayan expedido, no aceptando reclamo alguno una vez bajado el martillo y adjudicado el lote al comprador.
Neither the seller nor the auctioneers bear any responsibility for the authenticity of specific works, signatures, dates, titles, attribution to schools, etc. mentioned in advertising or during the auction, or appearing in the catalogue, on the works, or on previously issued certificates of authenticity. Once the auctioneer’s hammer has descended and a lot is assigned to the buyer, no claims will be possible.
Únicamente en caso de que, en forma expresa, en el momento del remate se advierta que el vendedor garantiza la autenticidad u otra cualidad específica o la inexistencia de vicios ocultos, responderá el vendedor frente al comprador, de acuerdo con las reglas del derecho común.
Only if it is explicitly stated at the time of the auction that the seller guarantees the authenticity or some other feature of a given item, or declares it free of hidden defects, will the seller be accountable to the buyer, as provided by law.
No obstante, aunque el vendedor no haya garantizado expresamente la autenticidad de la obra o la inexistencia de vicios ocultos, responderá frente al comprador si se comprobare que previamente al remate le constaban la falta de autenticidad o los vicios. En ningún caso responderá la firma rematadora quien no deberá pagar indemnización alguna ni devolver la comisión percibido, no siendo parte en el negocio celebrado con su intervención, obligándose exclusivamente a comunicar al comprador el nombre del vendedor si aquel lo exigiere judicialmente. El remate se realiza al contado. Seña 30% en el acto. Comisión e impuestos 16,90%. Deberá pagarse en la moneda que se realizó el remate al contado o por orden bancaria de pago irrevocable a favor de Castells & Castells. Los compradores dispondrán de un plazo de tres días desde la fecha del remate para efectuar el pago, vencido el cual la compra generará un interés cuya taza se fijará el día del remate. Transcurrido ocho días a partir del día del remate, sin que el comprador haya pagado el precio, se considerará que desistió de la compra, perdiendo la cantidad depositada en concepto de seña o arras. However, even if the seller has not explicitly guaranteed the authenticity of a given item or its freedom from hidden defects, s/he will be liable should it be proven that s/he was aware of the lack of authenticity or defects in question prior to the auction. Under no circumstances can the auction house be held liable, or required to pay damages or forego its commissions, since it is not a direct party to the transactions but an intermediary, whose sole obligation will be to inform the buyer of the seller’s identity, should the buyer seek that information through the courts.
