“A NIGHT IN HOLLYWOOD,”... FROM PAGE 1 JOY Quiza (extreme right) introduces the foundation’s officers on stage, namely: (from left to right) William Ruiz, treasurer; Nini Maldonado, board member; Nelly Aquino, board member, Marlene Cagatao, 2020 president-elect; Rocel Quiza, outgoing president; Josette Corro, cofounder, Kenny Leung, treasurer and Agnes Santos, secretary.

temporary-traditional jazz and Si-

di’s signature fast piano-playing. Unexpectedly though, the audience were also moved; each poignantly expressing their encouragement and support, upon watching the audio-visual presentation of ALQ Foundation’s heartwarming story and their vision, which was shown at the prelude. Joy Quiza, founder of Alexis Louise Quiza (ALQ) Foundation welcomed everyone with a compelling message: “You decided to come to our event and support us. I know deep in your heart something about ALQ Foundation connects with you at your deepest core. It may not be something you’ve thought of yet but I assure everyone, you will not leave this room without finding out.” The Board of Directors: Josette Corro (co-founder), Rocel Quiza(current President), Marlene Cagatao (President Elect), William Ruiz (Vice President), Kenny Leung (Treasurer), Agnes Santos (Secretary), Nini Maldonado, Nelly Cagatao, Ami Bautista, and Jose Valera joined Quiza onstage after her speech. In line with the foundation’s ad-

vocacy of providing hope to “children who are abandoned, lost and abused,” the show recognizes the “healing power of music.” This was, without doubt, achieved through the powerful songs that filled the halls of the world-famous cabaret and jazz club. Singer Agnes Santos had greatly contributed to the show’s success with her enthralling rendition of “Titanium,” “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” and “Inseparable.” The “Night in Hollywood” which took weeks of preparation, both by the producers and the talents, has raised the bar in pulling off a “night-out for a good cause.” It was done tastefully, whilst possessing great social relevance. Towards the end of the show, the goal was clearly realized: “music indeed soothes the soul of the hurting, and those who want to help heal them.” As the night ended with the last musical string being struck, everyone went home with full hearts and their heartstrings tugged, for good measure. For information on ALQ Foundation, visit their website at www. alqfoundation.org.

Garcetti joins release of Zero Emissions 2028 Roadmap 2.0

M

ayor Eric Garcetti joined elected officials, policy leaders, automakers, and industry partners at the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI) on Tuesday (November 26) to announce the release of the Zero Emissions 2028 Roadmap 2.0 — an ambitious blueprint to help cities accelerate progress on goals to reduce emissions. “We can’t turn the tide on the climate crisis until we work across sectors and city limits to put the brakes on dangerous pollution and kick our zero emissions transportation future into high gear,” said Mayor Garcetti. “The Roadmap charts a course toward a cleaner transit network — and draws up a blueprint for cities worldwide to follow, so all of us can invest in the smart policies and green energy that will strengthen our families’ well-being and quality of life for generations to come.” The Zero Emissions 2028 Roadmap 2.0 is a product of a partnership between the Office of Mayor Garcetti, L.A. County, the California Air Resources Board (CARB), automakers, labor groups, industry partners, and cities across L.A. County. For the second edition of the Roadmap, partners have committed to working collectively toward new, specific targets to achieve a 25% reduction in greenhouse gases and air pollution beyond existing commitments by 2028. These targets work to ensure: • 30% of all light-duty passenger vehicles on the road will be electric • 40% of all drayage and short haul trucks and 60% of medium duty delivery trucks will be electric • A total of 84,000 public and workplace charg-

ers are available for single occupancy vehicles, and 95,000 are available for medium and heavy duty trucks • A 20% mode shift from single occupancy vehicles to zero emission public transportation, bikes, or other active transportation options In addition to the new targets, the Roadmap will help guide the City of Los Angeles in its work to meet the goals of L.A.’s Green New Deal. Specifically, partners in the Roadmap will work with the City to pilot zero-emission delivery zones to help determine street and curb usage regulations; investigate and test new smart-grid technologies to prepare for the large-scale adoption of electric vehicles; create zero-emission mobility pilots for low-income communities; and work with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to identify opportunities to accelerate the installation and permitting of EV charging infrastructure. “The bold goals laid out in the Zero Emissions Roadmap 2.0 and the commitments made by the partners in the Transportation Electrification Partnership are key to ensuring that our region addresses the challenge of transportation — the largest source of California’s GHGs and the region’s air pollution,” stated Matt Petersen, LACI President and CEO. “We can only accelerate the impact of our action by working together.”

“The Zero Emissions 2028 Roadmap 2.0 report doubles down on the bold steps we must take to accelerate clean air and climate action in Los Angeles and across the state,” said Chair of the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Mary D. Nichols. “Together, we can serve as a model for California, the nation, and the world by building a state of the art transportation system that moves people and goods cleanly, efficiently and sustainably throughout the region.” “Clean air is a critical issue for all of us, especially the communities that have shouldered the burden of our transportation system and the harmful air pollution that it creates,” said Supervisor Janice Hahn, Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. “I look forward to working with LACI and know that — with this 2028 Roadmap as a guide — together we will forge the future of transportation for the health and welfare of all those in our communities.”

E-CIGARETTE... FROM PAGE 1 company’s claims that its product is aimed only at adults – JUUL targeted young people through advertising and failed to give warnings about the product’s chemical exposure and risks for cancer, birth defects, and reproductive harm. It also alleges that JUUL unlawfully failed to verify the age of California consumers and then violated the privacy rights of minors by keeping the personal email addresses of underage individuals who failed age verification on their website and using those email addresses to send them marketing materials. “Nearly 1 in 10 high school students in L A County report using e-cigarettes. That is not by chance,” said Supervisor Janice Hahn. “JUUL has systematical-

ly targeted the teen market with everything from the design of their products to their advertisements. With this lawsuit we are going to hold JUUL accountable for their hand in this public health crisis and do what we can to stop this company from creating a new generation of nicotine addicts.” “We’ve worked too hard, commit ted our ha rdearned money for too long combatting harmful tobacco use to stand idly by as we now lose Californians to vaping and nicotine addiction,” said Attorney General Becerra. “JUUL adopted the tobacco industry’s infamous playbook, employing advertisements that had no regard for public health and searching out vulnerable targets. Today we take legal action against the deceptive practices that

JUUL and the e-cigarette industry employ to lure our kids into their vaping web. We will hold JUUL and any other company that fuels a public health crisis accountable.” “Our goal today is to safeguard the health, development and well-being of children, teenagers and young adults throughout California and the nation,” said District Attorney Lacey. “JUUL and other nicotine product makers must be held accountable when they knowingly fail to take the necessary protective measures and allow the sale of nicotine products to underage buyers. California and Los Angeles County have long been leaders in the fight against tobacco and nicotine use. This lawsuit takes that fight to a new front, against a new threat.

We will stay vigilant. We will aggressively prosecute offending vape and tobacco companies. And we will win this battle.” The use of flavored e-cigarettes, or vaping, by young people in the United States, including middle and high schoolers, continues to increase rapidly, according to reports from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration. JUUL sales have grown dramatically and now make up more than 64 percent of the U.S. e-cigarette market. Smoking remains the number one preventable killer in the United States and causes over 480,000 deaths per year. Medical researchers have shown that many JUUL users continue to smoke cigarettes and that children

who were not likely at risk to start smoking cigarettes have done so as a result of their use of nicotine-containing e-cigarettes. Further, as of November 13, 2019, the CDC reported 42 deaths in patients with e-cigarette or vaping product use, with a further 2,172 cases of associated lung injury reported nationwide. Four of the deaths reported were patients in California. Today’s lawsuit, filed in the Alameda County Superior Court, alleges that JUUL’s viral marketing campaigns led millions of American youth to start vaping or “JUULing” without knowing the potential harms associated with nicotine or, in many cases, that the product even contained nicotine. JUUL launched its sponsored promotional events in cities across California

and elsewhere to distribute free samples of JUUL devices and their flavor pods to a young, trend-setting audience. The company engaged in a targeted social media campaign by marketing flavors that appeal to youth, such as mango, cool mint, crème brûlée, and cucumber. JUUL devices work by heating up a cartridge or “pod” containing liquids to create an aerosol, often called a vapor, that users inhale. The liquid contains nicotine, flavorings like mint or mango, and many other chemicals. The cartridges are small, potent and convenient. They plug into a USB drive and emit a small cloud of vapor when inhaled. Their use is hard to supervise and keep out of the hands of adolescents because the devices are CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

Marilou said Jazzy and Mohana are close to each other as they both went under the tutelage of Filipino pagent organizer John Gaff ud. “Roommate sila sa isang hotel dito sa LA,” Marilou disclosed. Jazzy, according to her aunt, has been into modeling since she was 14 years old. “Talagang hilig (modeling) na niya iyan,” Marilou recalled. Jazzy has been coming and going to Los Angeles and other parts of the US for years, helping in charitable endeavors or participating in modeling events. “Mabait na bata. She likes helping in good causes,” Marilou added. According to Marilou, seven family members here in Los Angeles are going to come with Jazzy to Atlanta, Georgia where the 2019 Miss Universe pageant will be held. “Wala nang mabiling tiket dahil naubos na daw. Maraming Pilipino ang manonood ng live. Pero sabi ni Jazzy siya na raw bahala sa mga ticket namin pagdating niya roon (Atlanta),” Marilou narrated. Jazzy is a daughter of Marilou’s younger sister. If the stars would align right for Jazzy, she could score a back-to-back win for the Philippines in the said pageant. Another Filipina, Catriona Gray, won the Miss Universe crown in Thailand last year. In 2015, another Filipina, Pia Wurtzback, also bagged the Miss Universe crown.

THANKSGIVING IN AMERICA FOR EVERY JUAN

Y

ears ago, in search of happiness and meaning, I stumbled upon a powerful discipline that turned into a lifestyle. The Art of Gratitude.

I have always kept a journal where I list all the things I am thankful for. It is a practice I have kept for as long as I can remember. The Art of Gratitude allows us to examine our lives. Being grateful has become a way of life. It is saying, Thank You, to whatever life brings. In the United States, Thanksgiving is a holiday that unites all colors and faith. It is that one brief moment, when Americans pause to reflect and give thanks. In its core is the story of immigrants, who sought shelter and refuge in a new land. Immigrants, like me and my son Carl, who see America from a different lens. Carl embodies the spirit of the first Thanksgiving. An immigrant who is grateful for the opportunity to work and get paid decently. Carl, who is still in high school, takes pride in his part-time job as a server in a café. The heart of gratitude is a changed life. Where his co-workers see hard work and complaint of everything imaginable, Carl repays the opportunity with hard work and gratitude. The fruit of gratitude is generosity. Where most people his age, never have enough and whine about what they don’t have, Carl is so grateful for what he has and shares. On his

first Black Friday, Carl shopped for Christmas gifts for family in the Philippines. The abundance mindset is the confidence that whatever we enjoy, health, happiness comfort, there is plenty where it came from. The art of gratitude can be cultivated in our life and instilled in our kids. They shift from a sense of entitlement to thankfulness. I cannot recall a time in my life when I didn’t feel thankful - even in the most difficult time in my life. It is the most powerful gift The Almighty has given me - a thankful heart. I have always had the ability to sift the good from the bad. Gratitude helped me make sense of my past and bring peace for today. It is a powerful pill against bitterness. It is acknowledging that bad can never outpower the good in our life Grateful people are powerful people. Grateful people are healthy people. Grateful people are magnanimous. The opposite is true. Ungrateful heartsthose who do not see what they have- are people who are bitter, selfish, jealous and resentful. Life never seems to be enough for them. The saddest people I know, are those who are on a continual search for what they do not have. Emotionally bankrupt people are

Is it a good idea to give pet as a gift for the Holidays? HOLIDAY season is in full effect and many are in search of the perfect present for their loved ones. Gifting friends or family members with an adorable new puppy or kitten is popular but not recommended for several reasons. Pets require a lifetime commitment, which includes time and financial demands. Unprepared new pet parents might regret the gift, and even re-gift the pet. Before surprising someone with a pet as a gift, here are some things to consider: • Determine the level of interest in owning a pet. • Will they be a responsible pet owner? • If the recipient is a child, will the parents assume care for the animal? Have the parents agreed to bringing a new pet into their home?

• Will they have enough free time to tend to the pet’s needs? • Are they able and willing to accept the ongoing financial responsibilities of pet ownership? • Is this a surprise? We recommend that the recipient is able to pick out their own pet and have the opportunity to bond with the animal before bringing it home. A home-made gift certificate can be presented to the gift recipient. Gift givers can create and print out a personal gift certificate on their own personal computer to give to the recipient. Once you contemplate the answers to the points above and decide to give a gift of a precious pet, please remember the County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control has hundreds of wonderful animals in its seven animal care centers.

E-CIGARETTE... FROM PAGE 4 easily concealed. JUUL was founded and launched in 2015. Before that, the founders studied the “Truth Tobacco Industry Documents,” internal tobacco industry corporate documents obtained during litigation between the state attorneys general and the tobacco industry. The documents include information on nicotine formulations and advertising techniques used to sell cigarettes. Since JUUL’s launch in 2015, youth vaping in the United States has almost doubled. From 2017 to 2019, e-cigarette use among high school students rose by 135 percent. In 2019, five million middle and high school students used e-cigarettes – an alarming increase of nearly 3 million students in two years. The majority of underage e-cigarette users report that JUUL is their usual brand. Today’s lawsuit alleges that JUUL violated California law by: • Failing to include required warnings about exposure to chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive

harm. • Delivering tobacco products directly to underage persons. • Delivering tobacco products directly to consumers without properly verifying their age. • Violating the privacy rights of minors by sending marketing material to the email addresses of underage individuals who failed age verification on JUUL’s website. • Creating a public health epidemic, particularly among young people, with an addictive and harmful product. This epidemic has had serious negative effects on public schools across the state. This lawsuit is only the latest action taken by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to combat the growing problem of underage e-cigarette use. In September, the Board approved a landmark ban on the sale of flavored tobacco products in unincorporated areas of the County and subsequently launched a targeted public health campaign to educate young people on the dangers of vaping.

View POINT Facing Debt Problems And Don’t Know What To Do? Most people who are struggling with debt problems for the first time are often confused and don’t know what to do. They’ve never been in this situation before. They have always paid their bills on time. For the first time in their life, they are finding it difficult to fulfill their debt obligations. Bill collectors may be calling and they’re afraid to answer the phone or even go to their mailbox. They’re feeling embarrassed, desperate or even angry. This can happen to anyone. Sometimes, it is the result of making bad financial decisions. But more often that not, it is caused by reasons beyond your control. For instance, these days I am seeing a lot of small business owners who are simply not making enough to even meet their payroll needs. Every month is a struggle and they are not even paying themselves because there is not enough money in the business after paying their employees, suppliers, vendors and other business expenses. What should they do? Or you can be someone whose work hours just got reduced or perhaps got laid off by your employer. I feel bad when I hear of people being terminated from their job of 10, 20 or sometimes even 30 years. The job is the only job they’ve had and known for years- and it is what they’ve considered to be their financial security. Then one day they get a notice from their boss saying that they are no longer needed by the company. They suddenly find themselves with no income and they are not prepared to deal with the fact that they may need to go back to school to learn new skills to find a new job or switch careers in mid-life. If you rely on a paycheck or your business to feed your family, missing even one paycheck or one slow month (if you’re in business) can be devastating. This is when people find out that with no savings in the bank, they are literally just one month away from bankruptcy because without the income, they are unable to pay their bills. The ideal situation is to have a few months’ worth of living expenses tucked away in a savings account but the truth is that most people don’t even have $1,000 in the bank. It’s true because as a bankruptcy attorney, I see it every single day. Even people who earn high incomes, continued on page 7

How to shop for best debt consolidation loans Debt consolidation is a common “get-out-of-trouble” solution for consumers, especially those with overwhelming credit card debt. You take out one big loan and use it to pay off smaller debts like credit cards. It simplifies bill-paying and, if done correctly, should reduce the interest rate and your monthly payments. The problem is that interest rates and cost of a debt consolidation loans vary wildly, ranging from as low as 5% to as high as 36% and a whopping cost of about 15-20% of your balances. It only makes sense to consolidate if you can score a low-interest loan that is half or less the rate you’re currently paying. So how do you get a single-digit interest rate that helps you pay off debt faster? Improve your credit score! Improving your credit score also could make you eligible for a low-interest loan from a bank, credit union or online lender. It also may help you qualify for a zero-percent interest balance transfer credit card. Generally speaking, you would need a credit score above 700 to qualify for one of these cards. But sometime what naturally comes with high debts are bad credit, therefore these Debt Consolidators are flying high charging outrageous rates and fees. Credit score and a willingness to provide collateral (a home or car) are the two factors that weigh most heavily in determining the best interest rate for a debt consolidation loan.

Know Your Options If poor credit has affected your loan eligibility, a credit counselor can help you determine your options. Talk to a counselor and know what is the best time to arrange for a debt consolidation. The best interest rates for debt consolidation loans go to consumers with credit scores 740 or higher. The further down the scale you go, the higher the interest rate you will pay. Anything below 660 is going to result in a high rate, though maybe not as high as the rate for credit cards. The steps to get a better credit score are manageable, but require discipline. • Pay bills on time • When possible, pay off your balance every month, or at least make minimum payment • Set up automatic payments to make sure you don’t miss one • Keep credit card balances at less than 30% of your credit limit • Don’t sign up for new credit cards • Look for mistakes on your credit report This won’t be easy, but if done effectively, it will raise your credit score and lower the interest rate you pay on a consolidation loan. Best Ways to Consolidate Debt There are four major ways to consolidate debt: property mortgaged loan; credit card balance transfer; debt consolidation programs and personal loan. Each one has positives and negatives associated with it, so examine them closely. It is important to know about fees or penalties for things like late payments, balance transfers or early pay offs. Here are the highlights of the four options. • Mortgaged Home Loan —Relatively simple if you own a home and has enough equity to borrow, cash out money and pay offs your debts. You have to qualify base on good credit and accepted debt to income ratio to get a home loan, but this would be the most economical and makes the most sense, if you are able to. • 0% Interest Credit Card Balance Transfer — Many credit cards offer 0% interest for an introductory period of 12-18 months. It can be efficient to transfer your debt to a 0% card, but only if you pay off the balance before the introductory period expires. mind your finances… from page 6 most of the time, have no savings. They spend it all every month. It seems like the higher the income, the higher the expenses. It’s not how much you make that matters. It’s what you get to keep. Once you fall behind on your debt obligations, it is easy to ignore the situation and hope that things will get better on their own. But that will never happen until you do something about it. That means you should be aware at all times how much money you have coming in, how much money you have going out, and spend within your means. Borrowing when you are already in debt is not a good idea. I see a lot of people who resort to payday loans when their income is short, hoping this can be a quick fix. But they are not, and they will only put you in a bigger financial hole every month. When I see the interest rates that these payday loan “thieves” are charging, I get really angry. Who in their right mind will pay more than 1000% interest on a $300-500 loan? You read that right: more than 1000% APR is what most of these pay day loan companies are charging and this should be a crime! But desperate people fall for it all the time and that’s what keeps them in business. Don’t wait until you get to a point of desperation before you start tackling your debt problems. In some cases, you can still avoid bankruptcy if you know what your options are. If you wait until your situation becomes a financial emergency, you will find that those options are extremely limited. I provide a free consultation to everyone who is struggling with debt problems. STARTING THE NEW YEAR FRESH WITH A DIVORCE

To many people, the New Year signifies a chance to have a fresh beginning. People dispose of old personal items and clean out the closet in order to make room for the new. This is also the time of the year many people realize when a marriage is not working out and it may be time to start a new life as a single person whether or not you have children. You can decide to take action and file a divorce. Before you take any action, you need to think about your situation carefully. First, you should decide whether you should you move out of the family residence or not? If you and your spouse are communicating and have some type of respect left with one another, it may be more economical to continue residing in the same household until you resolve the issues in the divorce case. However, if your relationship is heated and riddled with conflict, then someone should to move out. If your spouse has threatened you, hurt you, or committed domestic violence, you may file a domestic violence temporary restraining order and request the court to order your spouse to move out of the house. In the same application, you may also request for custody, support, and attorney’s fees. If on the other hand you decide to be the one to move out, you should move somewhere close to your spouse if you have children to make it easier for both of you to co-parent with the children. Second, you should decide whether your spouse is the type who will disclose all the financial assets or not after you file for divorce. Although the family code (family code 2100 et seq.) imposes a duty to disclose all material facts and information, spouses’ are not always forthcoming in disclosing completely all assets, debts, income and expenses specially after a divorce case is commenced. What sometimes happens is once a divorce case is commenced, assets are either not disclosed, disappears, or documents/ bank statements are not produced even with formal discovery. You should gather and make copies of all financial documents before filing the divorce. Third, there is an automatic temporary restraining order (ATROS) in place once you file and serve your spouse with the divorce papers. The four standard mutual restraining orders are 1) removing their minor children from the state without the prior written consent of the other party or a court order. family code Section 2040(a)(1) 2) restraint from transferring, encumbering, hypothecating, concealing, or in any way disposing of any property, real or personal, whether community, quasi-community, or separate without the other par-

ty's written consent or court order; fam code 2040(a)(2) 3) restraint from cashing, borrowing against, canceling, transferring, disposing of, or changing the beneficiaries of any insurance or other coverage, including life, hea lt h, automobile, and disability held for the benefit of the parties and their child for whom support may be orders. Fam C 2040(a)(3). 4) restraint from creating a nonprobate transfer or modifying a nonprobate transfer in a manner that affects the disposition of property subject to the transfer without the other party's written consent or court order. fam c 2040(a)(4). There are exceptions to the above restrictions. One exception is for property transfers in the usual course of business or for the necessities of life. Examples would be property transfers as part of your usual business operations or to pay for usual household living expenses. Another exception is payment of reasonable attorney's fees. fam c. 2040(a)(2). If you need to do any transactions that may violate the ATROS, it is best to do it prior to filing and serving the divorce petition provided you do not breach your fiduciary duty to your spouse. If you are thinking of filing a divorce, it is best to consult an experienced family law attorney before taking any action. 24-Hour In-Home Caregivers:

CAReGIVeRs for the elderly are regularly required to provide overnight care to their clients when working 24-hour shifts. In fact, many caregivers provide full support and assistance to their elderly patients throughout the night, as well as general supervision and companionship. Overnight care is necessary for many patients who suffer from dementia, wake up confused or disoriented, or have trouble going to the bathroom on their own. The label of “sleep-time” is often inaccurate, because patients get up so often that the caregiver must wake up several times each night, thereby getting inconsistent sleep. Without overnight care, many patients would need to be institutionalized in a care facility or placed in group homes. In the caregiving industry, unfortunately, it is common for private employers to deduct sleep time and other non-active time from the caregiver’s hours worked. Many private employers incorrectly believe that since a caregiver is allowed to sleep, and is provided a place to stay, they do not have to pay caregivers for the overnight supervision and coverage they provide. However, this practice is illegal under California law. In-home caregivers must be paid for all hours they are required to remain on the premises, subject to the control of their employers, even to the extent that they are sleeping, inactive, watching television or surfing the net. Accordingly, if a caregiver is not allowed to leave a patient’s home at night, the caregiver must be paid for all overnight hours. Although many employers require caregivers to remain on the presence at all times to ensure the client’s health and safety, when faced with a claim for unpaid overnight wages, they argue that the caregiver stayed at the client’s home for their own benefit, rather than for the client’s benefit. To limit liability, employers typically claim that the caregivers did not have a place to live, did not want to drive home or simply enjoyed staying at the residence. These claims are often untrue and tend to ignore the economic vulnerability that forces many caregivers to work overnight without pay.

If you are a 24-hour in-home caregiver, paid a daily rate for the services you provide, then you likely have a very valuable claim for unpaid overtime wages. For example, if you are a caregiver working 24-hours per day, 5 days per week, for a day rate of $270.00, then your daily unpaid overtime claim is approximately $675.00. The day rate of $270.00 does not compensate you, at all, for the 15 overtime hours you work each day. Based on this example, the caregiver’s regular rate of pay is $30/hour and the overtime rate is $45/hour (15 x $45 = $675). Moreover, liquidated damages for a willful failure to pay overtime wages could add an additional $165.00 per day to the claim, as well as interest, attorneys’ fees, and penalties. In the above example, the hypothetical caregiver may claim over $4,000 in additional compensation per week. On a yearly basis, this claim would exceed $200,000. We have helped many caregivers whose claims exceed $500,000 in potential damages when working several years for employers who fail to pay them the requisite overtime compensation. The best way to keep your employer honest is document your time worked. Text or email your employer if you are woken up at night and required to assist your client during night time hours. Keep a daily time log, documenting the activities and work you performed overnight, when caring for the patient. If you have emails or text messages from your employer, you should always save them. Save every communication, no matter how trivial it may seem, because it may end up being the most valuable piece of evidence to prove your claim. Caregivers working in Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly may also be entitled to compensation for sleep time when required to work at night or supervise patients while they sleep. There are limited circumstances where facilities are legally permitted to deduct sleep time. In reality, many facilities do not meet the requirements to deduct sleep time from hours worked and, therefore, owe the caregivers overtime compensation for hours worked providing overnight care.

MANILA — The Philippine SEA Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC) has announced that admission will be free for most sporting events in the 30th Southeast Asian Games. PHISGOC Chairperson Allan Peter Cayetano announced that following the instructions of President Rodrigo Duterte, tickets to watch games in the biennial event will be complimentary. "The instructions of the President to make sure that all Filipinos that want to watch live and can be physically present sa games, the organizing committee has decided that all games na hindi pa sold out yung tickets ay i-open at ilibre na," Cayetano said in an interview. With the exception of basketball, football and volleyball — tickets to which have already been sold — all other sporting events in the regional meet will be free and open to the public. The aforementioned non-ticketed sports include lawn bowl at Clark Global City, golf at the Luisita Golf and Country Club, squash at the Manila Polo Club, floorball at the UP College of Human Kinetics Gym and shooting at the Marine Corps Training Center in Taguig. metro manila house helpers to get p1,500 pay hike next month: Labor chief

tHe Metro Manila wage board has approved raising the minimum monthly salary of house helpers in the region to P5,000 from P3,500, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello said Friday. The pay hike will take effect 15 days after it is published on a major newspaper on Monday, Bello told radio DZMM. The Cabinet official, however, admitted that the labor department lacked authority to penalize employers who would violate the minimum wage. A law is needed to give the agency this power, he said. PResIDeNt Rodrigo Duterte was scheduled to meet with Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah ahead of the opening ceremony for the 30th Southeast Asian Games on Saturday, according to Malacañang. The meeting will take place on Saturday afternoon at the presidential palace. Bol k ia h’s ch i ld ren, P r i ncess Azemah and Prince Abdul Mateen, are competing in the SEA Games as part of the oil-rich kingdom’s polo team. The sultan’s nephew, Faiq Jefri Bolkiah, is the captain of Brunei’s men’s footba ll squad. Faiq was brought to a Manila hospital last weekend due to an allergic reaction

to peanuts, which was one of the ingredients of a dish that was served. SEA Games executive chef Bruce Lim said they were not notified by the Brunei delegation that Faiq had a peanut allergy, causing the footballer’s lips to swell after he was served a curry. Apart from his meeting with Bolkiah, Duterte would also lead Saturday's Bonifacio Day rites in Caloocan City and grace the opening ceremony of the 30th SEA Games at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan. Both Duterte and Bolkiah recently attended the Association of Southeast Asian Nations-Republic of Korea Commemorative Summit in Busan, South Korea. (GMA News)

sandiganbayan denies gov't appeal on p1-B civil case vs marcoses, tantocos MANILA — The Sandiganbayan has denied a government appeal to overturn the dismissal of a P1-billion civil case against the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, his wife Imelda, and their alleged dummies, Rustan’s Commercial Corporation founders Bienvenido Tantoco Sr. and Gliceria Tantoco. The Presidential Commission on Good Government, in its motion for reconsideration against the case's dismissal, argued that the defendants admitted material allegations pertaining to the ill-gotten nature of Tourist Duty Free Shops assets. The PCGG added that the Tantocos “indeed acted as dummies and agents of the Marcoses in acquiring ill-gotten wealth.” The Sandiganbayan 2nd Division denied the PCGG's appeal for lack of merit due to failure to present new argument. "The arguments raised therein have already been judiciously passed upon and properly considered by the court in the assailed decision which states that the documentary and testimonial evidence presented by the plaintiff

are insufficient to prove the allegations in the expanded complaint," the court said in a resolution promulgated last Nov. 20. The Tantocos earlier denied admission of the material allegations regarding the ill-gotten nature of the TDFS assets. They also argued that the government’s “conditionally admitted documentary exhibits and inconsequential witness testimonies” are insufficient. The anti-graft court noted Supreme Court rulings "that a motion for reconsideration should be denied when the same only rehashes issues previously put forward." The court in September cited insufficiency of evidence when it dismissed the civil case involving expensive art and jewelry, real estate properties in New York, duty-free shop franchises, tax-free importation benefits, corporations such as Rustan International Marketing, Eagle Mining Corporation, Rustan Pulp and Paper Factory. The case also included properties in Hawaii in the United States, Rome, Italy, and Forbes Park in Makati City in an expanded complaint against the defendants as well as other personal properties such as motor vehicles, cash on hand and in bank, notes, loans, and 3 Cessna aircraft. The ruling that denied PCGG's appeal was penned by Associate Justice Michael Frederick Musngi, with the concurrence of Division Chairperson Oscar Herrera, Jr., and Associate Justice Lorifel Lacap Pahimna. Despite the celebrity status of Karla and the fact that she has four children, including "Teen King" Daniel Padilla, Jam said he courted her just like what men usually do when they want a woman. “Wala kasi akong naisip na parang supersta r siya e. Inaano ko na pareho lang kaming normal na tao. Kung ano 'yung ginagawa ng isang lalaki sa isang babae, ganon yung ginagawa ko,” he said. (Philstar.com)

We may have no idea what he's up to nowadays, considering that he decided to keep a low-profile while on his "indefinite leave" from showbiz. But apparently, there's one thing that Kapamilya star John Lloyd Cruz seems to enjoy at the moment --and that is fatherhood. During a rare public appearance at the wedding of his friend, Vhong Navarro, Cruz was seen delivering a speech and convincing the "It's Showtime" host --albeit in a joking manner-- to make a child. "Gawa kayong baby, pare," he quipped towards Navarro and his now-wife, Tanya Bautista, obviously delighted with his experience so far of raising a baby. "Gawa kayong maraming baby. Masaya. " He continued his joke: "Parang iyon ang magpa- JOHN Lloyd Cruz was seen depaganda sa mundo ...mar- livering a funny speech at the aming babies para palitan wedding of 'It's Showtime' host Vhong Navarro. iyong mga katulad natin." Cruz then went on to remind the newlyweds to remember their vows throughout their relationship. The clip was courtesy of celebrity doctor Vicki Belo, who wrote as the caption: "To all of you who miss John Lloyd Cruz , here's a treat. He still has the charm and dashing good looks." MANILA, Philippines — Kapamilya TV host Karla Estrada was all smiles when her non-showbiz boyfriend Jam Ignacio was a guest in her morning talk show “Magandang Buhay.” During last Wednesday's edition of the morning talk show, Karla and Jam were interviewed by Karla’s co-hosts Jolina Magdangal and Melai Cantiveros. Karla said she’s nervous for her boyfriend because Jam is not into showbiz. “Actually, ninenerbyos ako para sa kanya kasi hindi naman siya sanay. Masaya naman. Bago sa akin 'to kasi wala naman akong naiharap 'di ba? First time 'to, kahit 'yung mga tatay ng anak ko. Parang nahihiya ako kasi parang kung kailan may apat na 'kong anak. But you know, sabi nga ni Vice, deserve nating lumigaya, sumaya,” Karla said. Jam said he was attracted to Karla the moment he first met the actress last June 1. “Maganda siya. Nagkakatinginan kasi

Vhong Navarro gets married to long-time partner Tanya Bautista

A

ctor-host Vhong Navarro and writer Tanya Bautista finally tied the knot on Thursday, after over a decade of being together.

The long-time couple exchanged vows in Kyoto, Japan, surrounded by family, friends, and colleagues in showbiz. Among those in attendance were Navarro’s “It’s Showtime” co-hosts, as well as his past and present co-stars in his film and TV projects. On Instagram, Kim Atienza shared a video from the ceremony, as well as a group shot of the noontime program mainstays with the newlyweds. Navarro and Bautista have managed to keep their relationship private, despite the TV star’s high-profile job and the latter being a resident writer of ABS-CBN.

The exception was in 2014, when Navarro figured in a controversy that led to court battles with businessman Cedric Lee and model Deniece Cornejo. At the time, Bautista became a visible figure who, despite not granting interviews, provided a strong support system for the then-embattled actor. “Napakasuwerte ko na si Tanya ‘yung girlfriend ko,” Navarro said in a 2017 interview on “Magandang Buhay.” “Ilang bagyo na ang dumating, pero pinapatibay kami ng panahon. Sa lahat ng pinagdaanan ko sa buhay, hindi ako iniwan niyan.” (ABS-CBN News)

Glaiza de Castro gets foreigner boyfriend, urges Angelica Panganiban to do the same MANILA, Philippines — Kapuso actress Glaiza de Castro has never been vocal about her personal life than now. At the sidelines of the recent 37th Luna Awards Nominees’ Night at Delgado 112 Restaurant, Quezon City, a beaming Glaiza told the press she and boyfriend of over a year, David Rainey, are so sure of each other, so she doesn’t mind sharing their story to the public. “Hopefully he’s the one. I’m so thankful because he’s understanding, faithful and loving to his family. These are qualities I’ve been praying for in a guy,” she said. David is in Manila for a two-month vacation, the longest he’s been in the Philippines, so far. He escorted Glaiza to the Nominees’ Night as well. The 31-year-old Glaiza, who was nominated for Best Actress for the Cinemalaya film "Liway," doesn’t run out of compliments about David. She admits her Irish boyfriend

Glaiza & David taught her a lot of things, the most important of which is learning to slow down. She explained that since she tends to overthink and David reminds her to take it easy and observe work-like balance. So instead of letting stress overcome her when she’s busy, Glaiza said she just thinks of how others are having a harder time than she is. This way, she learns to relax. She added that since David is an early riser, she starts her day early and is learning to enjoy the great outdoors more the way he does. She is learning how to surf and is helping her entrepreneur-boyfriend in his first business, Blue Box, which deals with coffee. He, in turn, is learning Tagalog words like "maaga." Although their respective families support their relationship (David’s mom advised Glaiza to find a job in Ireland when the actress was there for a visit), the couple is not rushing marriage. “My sibling is getting married at the end of the month,” Glaiza said, referring to a belief that it’s bad luck for siblings to get married on the same year. Besides the wedding, the end of the month will also see Glaiza sitting in the Nominees’ Row at the 37th Luna Awards, set on November 30 at the Maybank Performing Arts Theater in Taguig City (the formal event will

Angelica be shown via livestream at the FDCP (Film Development Council of the Philippines) Facebook page). The awards night will feature a special segment on the One Hundred Years of Philippine Cinema. Two kinds of trophies will be given away. The first will be given to film professionals with exemplary achievements within the period of January 1 to December 31. The second will be given to 30 film outfits that have given invaluable contributions to Philippine cinema. There will be musical and production numbers, including a tribute to composers Willy Cruz and George Canseco, both Luna Awards Hall of Famers. The event is made possible by FDCP CEO Liza Dino and Film Academy of the Philippines director-general Vivian Velez. The show is directed by singer-songwriter Ice Seguerra. When asked by the press if she would recommend having a foreigner boyfriend to her "amiga" (friend) Angelica Panganiban, Glaiza said: "Parang sinasabi ko nga sa kanya, 'Baka amiga hindi tayo pangdito'." When asked if she thinks Angelica would agree to be setup for a date with a foreigner, the Kapuso star said of her Kapamilya friend: "Open 'yun! Io-open ko siya!" (Philstar.com)

SEA GAMES: PH women’s football crashes semis; Azkals bite back The Philippine women’s football team marches to the semifinals and the men’s side stays in the medal hunt as both squads drub Malaysia

MANILA, Philippines – It turned out to be a jubilant night for Filipino sports fans as the Philippine women’s football team crashed the semifinals and the men’s squad also stayed in the running in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. The Filipinas emerged victorious against the Malaysian women’s squad with a 5-0 shutout to advance to the Final Four on Friday night, November 29 at the Biñan Football Stadium in Laguna. Sarina Bolden scored 3 goals in the 90-minute regulation and also received a helping hand with Shai del Campo and Eva Silva Madarang putting the finishing touches. In scoring the outstanding win, the Philippines earned a spot in the semifinals and will face either Vietnam or Thailand. The Philippine men’s squad also kept their

semifinal bid alive as the Azkals Under-22 squad pulled off a major upset victory over the 2017 edition’s runner-up Malaysia. In front of a raucous home crowd at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, the Azkals routed Malaysia with a shocking 1-0 victory in Group A. The Azkals, coming off a tough 1-2 loss to Myanmar, showed no signs of disheartenment as they dictated the pace in the first 30 minutes of action, aggressively attacking the penalty box with veteran midfielder Stephan Schrock leading the charge. Despite the overwhelming pressure that the Philippines applied on their counterparts, it did not prevent them from experiencing tense moments in the last 12 minutes of the first half as goalie Anthony Pinthus had to be challenged by two chances from goal-seeking Malaysian strikers.

Chima Uzoka tried to give the Azkals a one-nil edge before the halftime whistle, but his header soared above the crossbar. Both teams tried to establish their offensive flow in the opening minutes of the second half. While the Philippines had dominated possession for the first 15 minutes, it was Malaysia that came close to scoring on two occasions. Sensing that their opponents were starting to pick up momentum, the Philippines immediately stopped them in their tracks at the 78th minute as Schrock put the Goran Milojevi-mentored troop up by one goal on the scoreboard. Schrock's corner kick got deflected by a Malaysian defender, but it bounced off the chest of one of his teammates, accidentally sending past their goalkeeper, putting them at a 0-1 disadvantage.

As the time started to wind down, Malaysia’s frontline unit stepped on the gas pedal in a desperate effort to salvage an equalizer. However, the Azkals kept it together in the dying minutes of the contest to record their first win in the tournament. With the remarkable triumph against Malaysia, the Philippines improved to a 1-1-1 win-loss-draw slate and moved into 3rd place behind Myanmar and Cambodia in Group A with 4 points. The Azkals could strengthen their semifinal chances if they win their next assignment against Timor-Leste on Wednesday, December 4 at the Biñan Football Stadium in Laguna. On the other hand, Malaysia finds itself in a must-win situation as it needs to ace its last two outings to stay in Final Four contention. (Rappler.com)

Which people foods are safe for dogs?

D

ogs have a different digestive system from humans. This means that some foods that are safe for people can be harmful or even very dangerous for dogs.

However, many human foods are also safe for dogs and can provide important nutrients and health benefits. Here, we look at which people foods are safe for dogs and which not to feed them.

CARROTS

Carrots are a healthful food for dogs. Chewing on carrots can help remove plaque from their teeth and otherwise promote good dental health. Carrots are also a good source of vitamin A, which is beneficial for a dog's immune system, skin, and coat. However, too much vitamin A can be toxic, so feed a dog carrots in moderation.

Apples

Apples provide many important vitamins for dogs, including vitamins A and C. Apples are also a good source of fiber, which can help regulate a dog's digestion. However, eating rotting apples can lead to alcohol poisoning in dogs.

White rice

Cooked, plain white rice can be a good option for a dog with an upset stomach, as it is easy to digest and helps bind stool. White rice can cause blood sugar levels to rise, however, so dogs with diabetes should only eat it in small amounts.

Dairy products

Dairy products, such as milk, cheese, and plain yogurt, are safe for dogs to have in very small quantities. Eating too much dairy can cause digestive problems. This

is because dogs have low levels of lactase, a digestive enzyme that breaks down the sugars in milk. Dogs with lactose intolerance should not eat dairy products. Signs of lactose intolerances include diarrhea or vomiting after consuming anything that contains dairy.

Fish

Salmon, shrimp, and tuna are all safe for dogs to eat and good sources of protein. Salmon and tuna are rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help keep a dog's immune system, coat, and skin healthy. The B vitamins in shrimp can also help maintain a dog's digestive system and promote healthy blood circulation. It is important to cook fi sh before feeding it to a dog, as uncooked fish can contain harmful parasites.

Chicken

Plain, boiled chicken with no seasoning is a good option when a dog has an upset stomach.

Peanut butter

Unsalted peanut butter with no added sugar or sweeteners is safe for dogs to eat in moderation. Peanut butter contains many beneficial elements, including vitamins E and B, niacin, healthful fats, and protein. However, it is vital to check that the peanut butter does not contain a sweetener called xylitol, which is highly toxic to dogs. Anyone who suspects that their dog has ingested xylitol should immediately contact a veterinarian or call an Animal Poison Control Center.

a range of health benefits for dogs. R e s e a r c hTr u s t e d Source from 2012 suggests that antioxidants m ay help i mpr ove age-related issues in older dogs.

Bananas

Plain popcorn Plain popcorn, without salt, butter, or sugar, can be a nutritional treat for dogs. Popcorn contains minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc, which are all important for keeping dogs healthy. Make sure dogs do not eat any unpopped popcorn kernels, as this could cause them to choke.

Pork

Dogs can eat bananas in moderation. They are full of magnesium, which is important for good bone health. Due to their high sugar content, bananas should only be an occasional treat for dogs.

Cucumbers

C uc u mb er s a re a sa fe, low-calorie snack for dogs, and they can be a good option for those who are overweight. Cucumbers also contain plenty of vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin K.

Unseasoned, cooked pork is safe for dogs to eat. However, they should only consume small portions of pork, as the high fat content is hard for dogs to digest, and it can cause inflammation and pancreatitis. Refrain from feeding dogs bacon or processed ham, due to the high salt contents.

Green beans

Turkey

Dogs can safely eat the flesh of watermelon, but do not feed them the seeds or rind. Watermelon is safe for dogs to eat, but it is important to remove all the seeds first, as these can block the intestines. Chewing on the rind can also cause an upset stomach, so remove this too before giving the watermelon to a dog. Watermelon has a high water content, so it can help keep dogs hydrated. It is also a good source of vitamins A, C, and B-6. (medicalnewstoday.com)

Cooked turkey is safe for dogs to eat, but it should be plain and unseasoned. Many commercial dog foods contain turkey, as it is a good source of protein. Before giving cooked turkey to a dog, remove the fat fi rst. Too much fat can cause pancreas issues in dogs.

Blueberries

Blueberries are safe for dogs to eat and a rich source of fiber, antioxidants, and phytochemicals, which can provide

A Clean Sweep MOST of us know what a robotic vacuum – robovac, for short – is and how it works. In fact, the famous Roomba has become a hallmark of pop culture – it having been the center of tech and home lifestyle news and media alike, as well as the occassional meme or two. (Please take this time to search of a hilarious video of cats, dogs, and even babies riding on top of a moving Roomba.) But does it really live up to its futuristic hype? Does it actually compete with traditional – but equally high-tech – vacuum cleaners? Surprisingly, a good number of cleaning experts and user testimonies say yes! Many say that robovacs are indeed a good investment, and provide many arguments as to why they are just as efficient and effective. With that, here are five reasons why your home should have a robovac – gathered from real robovac users and home cleaning professionals alike: Anybody can operate them. In fact, the whole point of a robovac is that it operates itself! One would simply have to switch it on, place it on the floor, and set it on its merry vacuuming way. This is because robovacs are programmed to clean within a predetermined start and stop time, and manuever around your home on its own with the use of sensors. Meaning, you wouldn’t have to lift a fi nger – except of course, the finger you use to press its on button – getting it to work smoothly and efficiently. They’re smart and efficient. One of the robovac’s biggest key features is that they are capable of remembering your home’s layout, deposit the dirt they collect, and going back to their charging stations all

on their own. Additionally, most robovacs are even able to switch effortlessly between different types of surfaces – for example, hardwood tile and a carpeted floor. They can reach all the nooks and crannies of your home. With a traditional vacuum cleaner you’d have to move entire pieces of heavy furniture out of the way to get into those tight, hard-to-reach spaces that, coincidentally, gather the most dirt. Because of the robovac’s compact and thin size, it’s able to reach those places effortlessly. They don’t require a lot of care. With a robovac, maintenance is minimal to none. If you

take c a re of it well, it’ll last you for years. All you need to do is to make sure you keep damaging sharp particles such as glass or hard plastics out of its way, regularly replace its dust bag, and clean its filters and brushes. It’s timesaving. Nowadays, most of us are too busy with school, work, and taking care of our families to even think about deep-cleaning an entire house – let alone vacuuming all of its floors. Most of us barely even have time to take care of ourselves! A robovac lets you cross vacuuming off of your long list of chores, and will let you squeeze in a little more of much-needed R&R. A Vi e w From Every Room

What constitutes a good vacation? There are so many things to consider when it comes to having the “best trip”—of course, lodging is one of them. As of September 2019, there are 378 authorized and accredited hotels on the perennial island favorite, and among the crème de la crème is The Lind Boracay. Regarded as a leading hotel since it opened in 2015, The Lind Boracay continues to improve as it now has a new general manager and a wider beachfront. This flagship property in the Philippines under Scottland Leisure Inc.’s The Lind Hotels is a five-star luxury hotel that has 119 rooms. It is the only establishment on the island that has a ballroom that affords a fantastic view of the famous Boracay sunset. Not only does it offer a terrific vantage point overlooking the seascape, the handsome building is a view of its own, a structure to behold, especially its interiors by Manny Samson. Inside is chic, simple, with a bit of quirk, but cozy all the same. A lot of online reviews rate the place an impressive nine out of 10, describing it as the ideal romantic getaway. More than a couples retreat, this lifestyle hotel is a relaxing summer paradise and a coastal playground for the city-weary who are into a more active approach ZSOLT SIKET, Lind Boracay’s new to downtime. general manager The Lind Boracay features a lively and upbeat luxe vibe with amenities such as a full funcroom has a flat-screen tioning gym, three kinds of pools: lap, kiddie, and an TV, a personal safe, and infinity, a Jacuzzi, a Kid’s Club (playroom for children of a mini-bar. Balconies all ages), and a spa. A must-do activity here is a massage would always face the session at The Spa Wellness Boracay, which is managed sea, pool, or garden, by one of the country’s leading brands in luxury well- presenting guests picturesque views wherever they ness, The Spa. soothing aroma of essential oils to the calming music played in the background. After that, you eat your heart out at three of The Lind’s own restaurants, the beach bar and café Crust, +36, and all-day dining Tartine. What makes Crust unique is its rustic brick oven, in-house made pizza dough, breads, pastries, and noodles. On the other hand, +36, named after Boracay’s area code, was designed to resemble a sophisticated salon. It’s a lobby lounge bar that specializes in mid-day snacks, quiet cups of coffee, or gin and tonic. Definitely not the least, Tartine, whose name was inspired by the French open-faced sandwich famous for its elaborate spreads, serves international flavors ranging from continental classics to the savory treats of Asia. All of these are helmed by top-notch chefs with extensive experience in banqueting and fine dining, so the quality of food and service is superb. Going back to one of the hotel’s primary selling points, the ballroom is enclosed in floor-to-ceiling glass windows, and could easily accommodate 280 banquet guests. It takes pride in an outdoor viewing deck, which makes it the most sought-after location for weddings and events on the island. As for the suites, sizes vary from a cozy 47 to a spacious 181 square meters, all of which have balconies, linens with a thread count of at least 300, and each

of Tourism. In its earnest desire to maintain the cleanliness of the rehabilitated island and to push for sustainability, The Lind Boracay has joined the #AyokoNgPlastik campaign by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). This means the hotel has replaced all single use plasticdrinking bottles with eco-friendly products and containers. What makes the Lind Boracay really stand out is the admirable leadership of its general manager Zsolt Siket. The meek and mild Hungarian-born hotelier is all smiles, his job second nature to him as he spoke

about his travels and experiences with the hospitality industry. Before coming to the Philippines, he was director of Development and Quality for the Continental Group Hospitality Management where he was part of a team that led five boutique hotels. A hands-on leader,

Zsolt thinks that developing his coworkers’ competence and attitudes are better than just ordering them around. “The best guest experiences, the most unforgettable ones, are when clients’ preferences are met and, to their delight, even their unexpressed wishes are made real. What makes that possible? A team that has an instinctive, guest-centric orientation and an ability to delight the five senses,” he says. Somewhat of a perfectionist, he is also detail oriented. “I believe that the strong foundations and getting the basics right are essential for excellent hospitality,” he explains. “A comfortable bed, the right water pressure from the showerhead, a delicious breakfast—these are just a few examples of how each touchpoint creates an overwhelmingly unforgettable guest experience.” Nestled on the edge of White Beach’s Station 1, the hotel is a 10-minute walk from D’Mall Boracay, an eight-minute drive to Cagban Port, and a two-hour drive from Kalibo International Airport. He started out distributing flyers for a Korean language school. Now he’s a millionaire.

M

aurino Bayad just gives and gives. Born into a poor family in Angadanan, Isabela, Nino has worked one backbreaking job after another to make ends meet, from picking corn in a field to busing tables at a fastfood chain. He once took a job as a “marketer” for a Korean language review center, which was basically just the guy handing out flyers in the street. “Yung pera nga pong yun na kinikita namin sa maghapon, pinagbabayad na lang ng utang namin sa tindahan,” Nino said. “Ang nanay ko po…tindera at ang tatay ko po (since I could remember), paralisado na po siya,” he explained. One fateful day, Nino decided to take the advice he’d been giving people walking by and enrolled himself into the Korean language center. The lessons opened up a chance for

him to work in South Korea, where he endured the exhaustion of a factory worker for a year and a half. “Unang araw pa lang po sa amo ko, naiiyak na 'ko, dahil gusto ko na pong umuwi at na-homesick na po kaagad ako,” Nino said. Nino, however, sucked it in and found another job in the food processing industry. His hard work and dedication eventually got him promoted, and the man who once picked corn for a living made as much as P130,000 a month.

Nino saved for four years, and his bank account grew to up to P2.5 million. Finally, he used this money to make all his dreams come true: Marry his sweetheart and live in a beautiful house. Nino spent a long time handing out f lyers, but little did he know that the answer to his troubles was in his hands all along. The flyers also led him to the love of his life, Angie, who was an instructor at the Korean language center. But even now that he’s well-off and settled down, Nino never stopped giving advice and inspiring people to strive for a better future. “Kailangan alagaan mo ang sarili mo kasi dahil walang ibang tutulong sayo,” he told aspiring OFWs at the tutorial center. He added: “Kailangan may money management. Sa bawat perang kinikita niyo, dapat pangahalagaan niyo.”

LIGHTHOUSE... From page 12 included songs such as: "May Pag-Ibig Pa Kaya," written by Jimmy Antiporda and "Kahit Kailan,"which was awarded the 1996 "Song of the Year" by various radio stations. This song became their first big hit song. The following year, their first album reached gold, and subsequently, platinum. This enabled them to perform their first concert at the Araneta Coliseum where surprisingly, thousands of their fans "trooped to fill the massive dome to the brim." And, by the end of 1997 they were recognized by their peers in the industry. And, before the year ended, they won the most number of trophies at the 10th Awit Awards. The awards were: "Best Performance by a New Duo or Group," "Album of the Year," "Song of the Year," and "Best Produced Record of the Year," for their hit song, "Kahit Kailan." So, by the end of 1997, their debut album actually received its triple platinum. Amidst their flourishing career, the group faced some alarming obstacles when Luke Mejares replaced Brix Ferraris on lead vocals. But despite the odds, the "band doubled their efforts" to finish their second album called "Bump!" which surprisingly featured their new hit song "Sa 'Yo," describing a heart's yearning for love and "Reborn," which was their first attempt at recording an instrumental piece, "reminiscent of their early jazz influence." At the turn of the new millennium, the band once again made waves with the success of "Habang Atin Ang Gabi,"the theme song from "La Vida Rosa," a Rosanna Roces-Diether Ocampo film produced by Star CInema and later, "Misibis Bay," a Ritz Azul drama series on TV. The lyrics were written by scriptwriter, Armando Lao and the music was composed by Jay Durias, who to this day. considers the song one of his best compositions. The same song became the carrier single for their fourth album called "The Way We Do," which was released in 2001. And in November of the same year, the band staged their biggest major show at the 30,000-seat PSC Track and Field Oval. However, in the fi nal quarter of 2002, another surprise came about with the announcement that Luke Mejares was leaving the group and going solo. Though they faced a difficult task finding a replacement, the group was lucky to have acquired the astonishing vocal talents of Duncan Ramos and Vince Alaras. The young Alaras (he was 26-years old then), was a member of La Salle Green Hills' Kundirana" singing group and was known as the "boy who sounded like Brian McKnight." The young Ramos, on the other hand was a child prodigy - a wonder boy who sang and danced and who often accompanied famous singer, Gary Valenciano on his shows and tours all over the country. The addition of the two young talents provided a fresh and youthful tune to South Border's music blend, which prompted a hit song called "Rainbow," - which ultimately became the hit song for the 2003 fi lm of Sharon Cuneta's "Crying Ladies" and was later used as the entry song submitted to the Metro Manila Film Festival. This was followed by another hit song "Ikaw Nga," used as the song in the love team TV series of "Mulawin." Subsequently, in 2004, the group released their first album under their own independent label, "Episode III," which became a commercial success that included hits such as: "The Show," and "Brown Hand Smash," both songs "elevated the group to have an edgier, danceable R & B sound." On August, 2007, the band officially announced the departure of Duncan Ramos and Vince Alaras who reportedly wanted to pursue their own solo careers, though they both left on good terms. The relentless Jay Durias then took the responsibility over most of the vocals, until Kell Gattdula joined in the same year. But just a few months later, the rest of the band members sought permanent residence in the United States along with their families. Kell Gatdula also left in 2010. Currently, Jay Durias, is the only remaining original member of the group after RIc Junasa left the band sometime in 2012-2013. But, Vince Alaras came back and briefly reunited with the group between 2013 -2014. As someone who never really knew the South Border Band, this writer was truly impressed at the band's stage presence, the powerful blend of their voices particularly singing their hit Tagalog songs and their rapport with the millennial audience who all loved singing along their greatest hits! Many thanks to Minnie Junasa, wife of saxophonist Ric Junasa, who convinced me that watching the South Border Band will eventually transform my belief that there's a Pinoy Band worth the attention of older audiences like us. And she was indeed right. To all of you, South Border Band, my warmest congratulations for a riveting performance!

fascinating new study involving people who underwent hemispherectomy — surgery to remove one of the brain’s hemispheres — in childhood shows that these individuals now display almost no immediately obvious effects of this procedure. Brains have two halves, known as hemispheres. Each has various regions that regulate different aspects of our physical and cognitive functioning. These halves do not work separately. Instead, they communicate by establishing complex neural networks that allow different parts of the body and mind to synchronize and work in harmony. But what happens if you take one hemisphere away? That is the situation faced by people who undergo hemispherectomy —

usually in childhood — as a means of treating severe seizures. It would be easy to assume that removing half of someone's brain would cause them to function in a visibly different way. Yet, according to a recent case study featured in Cell Reports, this is not really the case. In fact, the brain learns to compensate for the loss. 'Marveling' at the brain's adaptive ability In the study, the investigators worked with

Does vaping without nicotine have any side effects?

he safety and long term health effects of using electronic cigarettes or other vaping products are still not well known. In September 2019, federal and state health authorities began investigating an outbreak of a severe lung disease associated with e-cigarettes and other vaping products. We are closely monitoring the situation and will update our content as soon as more information is available. Vaping, which is the act of vaporizing a liquid to inhale, is an increasingly popular alternave to cigaree smoking. Some manufacturers of vape products claim that vaping is a completely safe alterna ve to smoking. However, early research into the safety of vaping suggests that this is not the case. In fact, it appears that vaping, even without nicone, can have harmful effects on the body. In this arcle, we discuss the current research on the side effects of vaping without nicone. What is e-liquid? E-liquid refers to the liquid that vape devices or electronic cigarees vaporize. People may also refer to it as e-juice or vape juice. The side effects that a person experiences when vaping depend partly on the type of e-liquid that they use. The specific components of e-liquids vary among brands and products. The base liquid is generally a mix of ingredients such as water, vegetable glycerine, and propylene glycol. Manufacturers then add different flavorings or addives to this mix to create a parcular flavor. Many of these ingredients have a Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS)Trusted Source cerficaon for use in food products. However, the vaping process heats and vaporizes these ingredients. There is lile research to suggest that food-grade ingredients are safe for vaping. Vaping without nicone prevents nicone dependence and other side effects that have an associaon with nicone. However, vaping without nicone can also cause side effects, including those below. General toxicity Many of the chemicals in e-liquids may have toxic effects on the body. A 2012 laboratory study found that these effects were due not to nicone but to the chemicals that manufacturers use to flavor e-liquids. Importantly, this was also the case for e-liquids that contained food-grade ingredients. The findings of a 2015 study showed that heating the propylene glycol and glycerol in e-liquids creates compounds that release formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning that it has the potenal to cause cancer. A more recent study invesgated the effects of e-liquid on young vape users. The study compared three groups of adolescents: those who used e-cigarees only (e-only), those who used e-cigarees in addion to smoking standard cigarees (e+), and those who had never used either (control). Overall, the study showed that vaping was less damaging than cigaree smoking. However, adolescents in the e-only group had significantly higher quanes of toxic chemicals in their urine compared with those in the control group. These chemicals included: acrylonitrile, acrolein, propylene oxide, acrylamide, and croton aldehyde. Other research supports these findings, showing that heang up and vaporizing e-liquid chemicals makes them especially toxic to lung cells. As a result, the researchers "cauon against the widely held opinion that e-cigarees are safe." Lung and throat irritaon In the short term, vaping e-liquid can irritate the lungs and throat. People who vape oen refer to this as "throat hit." This term describes the ngling, burning sensaon that a person experiences as they inhale the vapor. This sensaon comes from heang and inhaling the chemicals in the e-liquid. As the authors of an e-cigaree study in Tobacco Induced Diseases note, inhaling large amounts of propylene glycol and glycerol can irritate the airways. They also point out that the levels of these chemicals in the e-cigaree are high enough to cause irritaon aer

just one puff. Inflammaon A 2018 study found that several common e-liquid flavoring ingredients caused a damaging inflammatory response in lung cell samples. The e-liquids that the study included did not contain nicone. Chronic inflammaon of lung ssue can lead to irreversible scarring in the lungs. Larger scale studies in humans will help establish the long term risks that e-liquid vapors pose to lung ssue. However, early evidence suggests that they have a damaging effect on these organs. Alternaves Many people say that vaping helps them resist the urge to smoke cigarees, but it does come with risks, even without nicone. People can look for alternaves to vaping that sasfy some of the things that they enjoy about the habit. Some examples include: - Drinking sparkling water: The ngling, burning feeling from drinking a carbonated beverage may cause a sensaon that resembles throat hit. - Chewing gum: Chewing flavored gum, with or without nicone, may provide an enjoyable flavor experience similar to that of vaping. - Playing with a toothpick: Holding a toothpick in the mouth helps distract the hands and mouth, which can take away a person's urge to smoke or vape. - Eang sunflower seeds: The act of eang sunflower seeds requires a person to put their hand to their mouth repeatedly. This repeve movement mimics those that a person makes when taking drags from a vape, which can help alleviate the urge to vape. - Taking deep breaths: Using a vape oen requires a person to take very deep breaths that they may not take otherwise. Taking several very deep breaths may help reduce the urge to vape. Vaping without nicone vs. smoking cigarees A large body of research focuses on the negave effects of cigarees. This evidence is partly why vaping became popular in the first place. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevenon (CDC)Trusted Source note that cigaree smoking causes more than 480,000 deaths each year in the United States, making it responsible for almost 20% of all deaths. The risks of cigaree smoking are very likely, therefore, to be more significant than the risks of vaping without nicone. However, many manufacturers falsely claim that their vape products are completely safe. On the contrary, a growing body of evidence suggests that vaping also carries health risks. To fully understand the long term risks of vaping, sciensts will need to conduct large scale studies over many years. Nonetheless, inial research suggests that vaping with or without nicone is harmful to the body. Takeaway Vaping can have many side effects, even when the e-liquid does not contain nicone. Despite qualifying as food-grade ingredients, the flavorings and addives in e-liquids can have numerous harmful effects on the body when a person heats and vaporizes them. Research shows that the chemicals in e-liquid may have parcularly harmful effects on lung ssue. Heang these chemicals can also trigger the release of carcinogens. Research into the safety of vaping is sll in its early stages, and large scale studies are necessary to establish the long term risks. However, the results of early research show that vaping, even without nicone, is not a completely safe alternave to cigaree smoking. (medicalnewstoday.com)

six participants who had undergone hemispherectomy during childhood as a treatment for epileptic seizures. T h e participants were in their 20s and early 30s at the start of the study, and they had undergone the brain surgeries when they were anywhere from 3 months to 11 years old. The researchers say that working with participants who had undergone hemispherectomy at such different points in their childhoods helped them better understand how the brain adapts to this loss at different stages. "It can help us examine how brain organization is possible in very different cases of hemispherectomy patients, which will allow us to better understand general brain mechanisms," explains the study's first author, Dorit Kliemann, Ph.D., from the California Institute of Technology, in Pasadena. The team asked the participants who had undergone hemispherectomy — as well as six control participants — to receive functional MRI scans. The scans allowed the researchers to track activity in the brain while it was at rest. By comparing the brain scans, the team

Weekend

found that the group who had undergone hemispherectomy had stronger brain network connectivity — rather than weaker connectivity, as one might expect — compared with the control group. The regions that the researchers focused on were those that regulate vision, movement, emotion, and cognition. To confirm these findings, the team also compared the scans with data previously collected by the Brain Genomics Superstruct Project, which has amassed brain data from more than 1,500 participants. "The people with hemispherectomies that we studied were remarkably high functioning," emphasizes Kliemann. "They have intact language skills — when I put them in the scanner, we made small talk, just like the hundreds of other individuals I have scanned," she continues, noting that "You can almost forget their condition when you meet them for the first time." "When I sit in front of the computer and see these MRI images showing only half a brain, I still marvel that the images are coming from the same human being whom I just saw talking and walking and who has chosen to devote his or her time to research." In the future, the investigators plan to conduct another study to try and replicate the current findings, then to go even further by building an image of how the brain organizes and reorganizes itself to deal with injury. Because, as Kliemann points out, while it is "remarkable" that people can live with half a brain, a very small brain lesion, a tumor, or a traumatic brain injury, caused by a biking accident, for example, can have "devastating effects." "We're trying to understand the principles of brain reorganization that can lead to compensation. Maybe down the line, that work can inform targeted intervention strategies and different outcome scenarios, to help more people with brain injuries," says Kliemann. (medicalnewstoday.com)

Gazini Ganados attends Miss Universe party in Inaul gown

G

azini Ganados has officially started her Miss Universe pre-pageant activities in Atlanta, Georgia, donning a gown that’s uniquely Filipino for her first event on Friday. The Philippine representative wore an Inaul dress by Mindanao designer Akmad Kari to a thanksgiving dinner hosted by the Miss Universe Organization. Inaul is the traditional woven cloth of Maguindanao. Earlier on Friday (Manila time), Ganados was welcomed by fellow Filipinos upon her arrival in Atlanta. She even waved a Philippine flag at the airport, as seen in her Instagram post. “Maraming salamat, mga ka-

babayan ko! Honored to be raising our flag on this side of the world!” she captioned the photo. Ganados is hoping to claim a back-to-back win for the Philippines, following the reign of the 2018 titlist, Catriona Gray. Should Ganados achieve the feat, the Philippines will become only the second country to have back-to-back winning representatives in Miss Universe, after Venezuela’s 2008 and 2009 reigns. The Brunei team, which also includes Prince Mateen’s sister, Princess Azemah Ni’matul Bolkiah, won over the Philippines’ polo bets on November 24 at the Inigo Zobel Polo Facility. They’re looking to take home gold after Brunei settled for bronze against defending champion Malaysia in the 2017 SEA Prince Mateen

Games. Aside from the game last Sunday, the Brunei royalties were a draw for some Filipinos who were at the Calatagan, Batangas venue. Going by his posts on Instagram where he has over a million followers, Prince Mateen is not only active in polo but is also skilled in a variety of sports and activities. On top of his royal duties, Prince Mateen is a second lieutenant owing to his commissioning officer course at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, a frequent participant in the Singapore F1 Night Race, a certified helicopter pilot, and a guitar player, among others. Who is Maria Ylagan Orosa? Banana ketchup inventor featured as Google doodle

MARIA YLAGAN OROSA is featured as a Google doodle on November 29, 2019. Google

MANILA — Google on Friday paid tribute to a Filipino food scientist and humanitarian through a “doodle,” or an illustration prominently displayed on its home page. The doodle for November 29, 2019 shows Maria Ylagan Orosa, who is also known as the inventor of banana ketchup, on the occasion of her 126th birth anniversary.

Orosa hailed from Taal, Batangas and earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in pharmaceutical chemistry and food chemistry in the University of Seattle. She returned to the Philippines in 1922 to help address the problem of malnutrition in the country through her culinary inventions. Orosa is credited with inventing

A side from banana ketchup, now an iconic and well-loved condiment among Filipinos, Orosa invented Soyalac (a nutritious soya beans drink) and Darak (rice cookies rich in vitamin B1) — both provisions for Philippine forces during World War II. In 1983, the National Historical Institute installed a marker at the Bureau of Plant Industry in Manila in recognition of Orosa as a war hero, food scientist, and humanitarian. (ABS-CBN News)

Carom, also called as French billiards, is played with three balls (two white and one red) on a table without pockets. The goal here is to drive one of the white balls (cue ball) into both of the other balls. To win, one would need to hit the 100-point mark. Each carom completed counts as one point. "Sa carom, habang natatamaan mo 'yong mga bola, ikaw pa rin ang titira," Reyes said.

Young Filipino filmmaker wins award Ronnie Liang is now a solo pilot in 2019 International Emmys

A

young Filipino filmmaker won an international award during the 2019 International Emmys in New York City for his 1-minute video about a displaced Muslim student survivor of the Marawi siege in the Philippines in 2017.

Breech Asher Harani, 28, was among this year's JCS International Young Creatives Award for his video "Next to Me." "Hindi ako makaniwala kasi, kung iisipin mo, the Emmys is for television di ba? Tapos they opened their doors for short film like this, so thankful ako," Harani told ABS-CBN News.

“Next to Me” is based on a true story about a displaced Muslim student survivor trying to fit in, in a new non-Muslim school, after her family evacuated from their war-torn home in Marawi. Harani’s short film showed how a student stood up for peace by showing respect to those who happen to look a little different from them. "It’s very important nowadays to educate

our young children to be tolerant with other students with different traditions, different religions," the young Filipino said. The JCS International Young Creatives competition was designed to discover and recognize young talents from around the world while creating a global conversation around peace. The fi lmmaker said he is thankful for the wider reach this international platform has given him and his advocacy for peace and inclusion. "It’s very important especially in the age of social media, where children will be watching 1-minute videos in their phones. I think it’s important that they see contents like this so that their minds would be molded into doing good," he said. The competition is free for anyone to enter and is open to non-American citizens (dual citizens are eligible) aged 18 to 29. The 2020 competition will open in June. (ABS-CBN News)

MANILA — Ronnie Liang finally made his dream of becoming a pilot come true as he recently made his first solo flight. The ceremony for the singer's first solo f light was held at APG International Aviation Academy in Subic on Tuesday. After receiving a pin, Liang celebrated his milestone by having his f light instructor and the flying school's administrator dump a bucket of water on his head. "It was a childhood dream and ngayon nagma-materialize, we are making it happen. Maraming variables, factors para pigilan tayo sa pangarap na ito, pero I just realized that we make our own destiny based on our decisions," Liang told ABS-CBN News. "Gusto ko pong maging magandang halimbawa rin sa mga kabataan na matupad nila ang mga pangarap nila

regardless of what's their status. Kasi kami noon, we are financially broke. Mahirap na mahirap po kami. From there, nangarap ako at nagsumikap. Now, nagpipiloto na po ako and I have my pin na. Makakapag-solo na po ako," he said. Liang, who started his lessons in October last year, has completed 30 hours of flying time. The "Ngiti" singer is just 10 hours of flying time away from becoming a private pilot. Early this month, Liang celebrated his 12th anniversary in the music industry with a soldout concert titled "Love x Romance" at the Music Museum. He is currently promoting his Christmas song "Sa Paskong Darating," and "Liwanag," his collaboration track with Sarah Geronimo. (ABS-CBN News)

Sinigang na Hipon sa Calamansi

SINIGANG na Hipon sa Calamansi is the ultimate cold-weather comfort food! With fresh, plump shrimp, tender-crisp vegetables, and a refreshing calamansi flavor, this Filipino sour soup is perfect paired with steamed rice and fish sauce on the side. The Filipino sour soup, sinigang, has many variants. It can be cooked with various cuts of pork, beef, or chicken as well as seafood like salmon, milkfish, catfish, and shrimp. Although tamarind is the most souring agent, others like guava, kamias, green mango, and calamansi may also be used. Over the years, innovative cooks have given this classic soup unique twists using abundant local fruits such as watermelon, pineapple, and lychee to add a distinct flavor along with substituting the usual meat cuts with corned beef or grilled pork. Some versions has miso paste for a touch of savory, “umami” taste while others call for pieces of gabi (taro) to naturally thicken the broth. Sinigang generally includes a wide array of vegetables such as tomatoes, pechay, bok choy, kangkong, spinach, eggplant, okra, long beans, and daikon radish. Tips on How to Make Sinigang na Hipon sa Calamansi Water will work in a pinch, but rice washing/water is highly recommended for that extra depth of flavor. Cook the tomatoes and onions straight in the liquid but if you don’t mind the added fat, feel free to saute them first in oil to boost flavor. Because this is all about the shrimp, you may choose the vegetables that you like to cook it with. For best texture, add the vegetables to the pot according to what cooks longer or faster. Do not overcook the shrimp as it will toughen and will be harder to peel.

CHICKEN PANCIT BIHON

TURN your usual Chicken Pancit Bihon into something special with Knorr Shrimp Cubes. With pancit, you can have a party all day long and enjoy the Christmas spirit. There’s always something to celebrate with pancit, especially when the family is complete. So, kick off the holidays or start your weekend in festive party mode with all of the family members eating together at the table. INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

2 tbsp oil 1 tbsp achuete (annatto seeds) 1 pc onion, chopped 6 cloves garlic, chopped 1 pc chorizo, sliced ¼ cup chicken breast, sliced 6 pcs suaje (shrimp), chopped 2-1/2 cups water 2 pcs Knorr Shrimp Cubes 300 g noodles (bihon) ¼ pc carrot 1 bunch pechay, sliced sliced hardboiled egg calamansi

1. Place the achuete (annatto) seeds and oil in a pan. To extract the color, turn the heat on to medium and allow to sizzle. When the seeds lose their orange color and eventually turn dark, remove the seeds from the pan and discard. You now have the achuete oil ready. 2. Using the same pan, throw in the onion and garlic and sauté until they give off a nice aroma. Then, gently place the chorizo, chicken breast, and suaje in. Continue to sauté until cooked through. 3. Prepare the sauce. Pour in the water and bring to a boil before adding the Knorr Shrimp Cubes. 4. Drop in the noodles and vegetables and stir. 5. Season according to taste. Top pancit with hardboiled egg and serve with calamansi on the side.
