Photo by BOBBY CRISOSTOMO PHOTO BY Bobby Crisostomo Photo provided by ROSALIE CARATAO nue, Los Angeles (built in 1915) and the official historian of the 58-yearold Los Angeles Philippine Women’s Club (LAPWC). The historian and civic leader lived by herself in an apartment in downtown Los Angeles. Rosalie Caratao, outgoing president of LAPWC, told Weekend Balita/US Asian Post that she was among the four people who discovered Dumapias unconscious in her apartment. Caratao was with two other members of the LAPWC when she went to Dumapias’ apartment. “Kinabahan ako,” Caratao recalled after no one answered the door. The women sought the apartment’s manager and asked for the key to Dumapias’ unit. The front desk personnel, also a woman, accompanied Caratao and

her peers. “Doon namin siya (Dumapias) nakita na nakahiga sa sahig. Akala ko nga patay na siya. Pero nung i-check siya nung apartment personnel, nalaman na may tibok pa ‘yung puso niya. Kaya tumawag kami ng paramedic,” Caratao recounted. Shortly after Dumapias was taken by the paramedics, Caratao said she started to locate the hospital where the paramedics had brought the victim. “Pangatlong ospital na pinagtanungan ko, sa Good Samaritan Hospital doon namin siya na-locate.”

Before the tragedy

It was unusual for Dumapias not to call her colleagues whenever she would miss a meeting at the LAPWC.

“Tumatawag siya lagi kung makakarating siya o hindi,” Caratao said, noting that the woman was a very dedicated and thoughtful member of the LAPWC. LAPWC held a meeting at the LA Downtown Medical Center in the historic Filipinotown on November 14, a Thursday. “We went to her apartment on Saturday (November 16) because I got worried because she has not been responding to my calls.” Several months back, Caratao brought Dumapias to an urgent care clinic after she felt dizzy after attending a LAPWC meeting. “Sabi ko sa kanya, hindi kita ihahatid sa bahay, dadalhin muna kita sa urgent care,” Caratao recounted. At the urgent care, the nurses found Dumapias’ sugar count to be very high and kept her at the clinic for a couple of hours.

“Nagpasalamat siya. Buti na lang daw dinala ko siya doon dahil kung umuwi na siya, mag-isa lang siya doon.”

Great loss to Filipino American community

Filipino Disciples Christian Church Pastor Jeffrey Ilagan could not fathom how much of a loss was Dumapias’ demise meant for their church and the Filipinotown. “She was not only our keeper of the past, she was only our link to the present, to our community here,” Ilagan told Weekend Balita/ US Asian Post. The pastor added that he has understood that with Dumapias’ passing, he really needs to step up and try to retain her vast network of community leaders and volunteers. Ilagan said that Dumapias’ service and dedication to the Filipino

American community deserved recognition. The family of the deceased has scheduled a memorial service for friends and family on December 14. Jun Gonong, president of another deep-rooted organization -- the Filipino American Community of Los Angeles (FACLA) — told Weekend Balita/US Asian Post that the Filipino Cultural Center (FCC) will always be available should the family of Dumapias agrees to hold a public memorial for her. “She deserved to be remembered well for her dedication and service to our community,” Gonong added.

LA SUPERVISORS... FROM PAGE 1 and paramedics in their moment of need, but now they need us,” said Supervisor Janice Hahn. “Our firefighters are fighting bigger and more dangerous fires and our paramedics are responding to record numbers of 911 medical calls. Their budget has been stretched to the breaking point and we cannot take them for granted. This March, voters will have the opportunity to give these men and women the resources they need to do their jobs protecting communities and saving lives each and every day.” The Los Angeles County Fire Department serves 58 of the county’s 88 cities and all of its unincorporated areas, including county beaches which make up the County’s Consolidated Fire Protection District. The LA County Fire Department is not funded through the County’s general fund. Instead, the Fire District is responsible for raising its own revenue via property taxes collected within the district. Unfortunately, the funding collected has not kept up with the Department’s growing resource needs. “Today’s fast-moving, explosive wildfires and the rising numbers of 911 calls are really putting a strain on the hardworking men and women who are our local fi refighter/ paramedics,” said Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl Osby. “There’s a human impact on them as we stretch to ensure the safety of our neighbors and community. We desperately need more resources to meet today’s demands. I’m grateful to the Board for placing this much-needed

ballot measure before our voters.” Over the past decade, the demand on the Department for emergency medical services has grown exponentially. Since 2008, LA County has seen an over 50 percent increase in calls for assistance in medical emergencies, such as strokes, heart attacks and car accidents. Yet, in that same time period, there has been less than a 5 percent increase in paramedic units to respond to those calls. The Fire District currently lacks the funding to meet national standard staffing levels as set by the National Fire Protection Association. The “fire season” in LA County is growing longer and wildfires are becoming more frequent. Climate change has created drier, windier conditions which have fueled larger and more dangerous wildfires. We can no longer count on other fire departments sending firefighters to help battle our wildfires, since wildfires have been burning simultaneously up and down the state and drawing resources. “With an extended fire season and a substantial increase in calls for emergency medical services, voters will have the opportunity to help the Fire Department address its structural deficit to ensure our first responders are fully equipped to continue providing the highest quality public safety services,” said Supervisor Kathryn Barger. LA County firefighters and paramedics are using decades-old equipment that needs to be replaced. 20-year-old fire engines and rescue vehicles frequently break down and are costly

CARSON... FROM PAGE 1 $72,500 in grants and incentives to fund the purchase of our Chevrolet Bolt EVs. “I am proud of Carson's continued progress to improving our environment. I am excited to announce that with our new electrical vehicle fleet we will improve our air quality as every 1,000 miles driven in an EV saves about 39.6 gallons of gasoline, or two barrels of oil, and produces no air pollution-producing tailpipe emissions. This is especially important for Carson, as the City’s air quality is impacted by nearby major freeways, major oil refineries, heavy industrial land uses, and our close proximity to the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles,” said Carson Mayor Albert Robles. The MSRC provides funding from a $4 surcharge on vehicle license fees that is specifically to be used for local projects designed to reduce air pollution from motor vehicles. Over its nearly 30-year history, the MSRC has distributed more than $400 million in funding for clean air projects throughout Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties that have helped to remove as much as 13,000 tons of air pollution from the skies of Southern California. Residents will have the chance to get up close and personal with new electric vehicles at the City’s annual Earth Day event in April 2020. Until then, if you see a fleet vehicle with both the Carson and MSRC logo, you’ll know it’s Carson taking action towards a cleaner future. Carson Mayor Albert Robles added, “These electric vehicles join Carson’s electric trash truck, making Carson the only City in California with an electric residential trash truck and electric vehicle City fleet.”

to repair and maintain. The Fire District’s antiquated 30-year-old 9-1-1 communications system is incompatible with modern wireless and digital systems. This poses challenges for paramedics who need to communicate directly with emergency rooms while transporting patients and to firefighters on the ground coordinating fire response and evacuations. The system does not provide GPS mapping, a critical tool to reduce response times. The department is also in need of thermal image cameras used to locate and rescue children, the elderly, and people with disabilities who are particularly vulnerable during fires, floods and earthquakes. “When you call 911, you know help is coming. For us, this is our 911,” said LA County Firefighter/Paramedic Erin Regan. “We are asking you for this measure because our firefighters and paramedics in the field need more resources” The measure will be placed on the March 3, 2020 ballot for voters within the fire district. Should voters approve by a two-thirds vote, the resulting parcel tax of $0.06 per square foot would collect approximately $134 million a year from residents in the Consolidated Fire Protection District. Government parcels, non-profits, and low-income seniors would be exempt from the parcel tax. The funds will be used to hire and train additional firefighters and paramedics and replace aging safety gear, communications tools, and lifesaving rescue equipment. A May 2018 needs assessment ordered by the Board of Supervisors for the Fire Dis-

trict demonstrated that additional funding is urgently needed to hire and train more firefighters and paramedics to accommodate the increasing need for life-saving emergency medical services and to maintain, upgrade, and replace its safety equipment, emergency communication systems, facilities, life-saving devices, and vehicles. The Woolsey Fire After Action Review released in October 2019 showed that mutual aid agreements with fire departments across the state failed to bring the needed resources and firefighters to fight Woolsey. Both the Camp Fire and Hill Fire began shortly before the Woolsey Fire, exhausting the fire services mutual aid system up and down the state. The LA County Consolidated Fire District includes the cities of Agoura Hills, Artesia, Azusa, Baldwin Park, Bell, Bellflower, Bell Gardens, Bradbury, Calabasas, Carson, Cerritos, Claremont, Commerce, Covina, Cudahy, Diamond Bar, Duarte, El Monte, Gardena, Glendora, Hawaiian Gardens, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Hidden Hills, Huntington Park, Industry, Inglewood, Irwindale, La Canada Flintridge, Lakewood, La Mirada, Lancaster, La Puente, Lawndale, Lomita, Malibu, Maywood, Norwalk, Palmdale, Paramount, Pico Rivera, Pomona, Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates, Rosemead, San Dimas, Santa Clarita, Signal Hill, South El Monte, South Gate, Temple City, Walnut, West Hollywood, Westlake Village, and Whittier, and all those within the unincorporated areas of the County of Los Angeles.

NEW “PARKLINE SHUTTLE”... FROM PAGE 1 to existing public transit offerings in and around the park. The shuttle will be operated by the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) and stop at the Griffith Observatory; Greek Theatre; Franklin’s Café (with access to the playground and Roosevelt Golf Course); Hollywood Sign Hike; Los Feliz and Riverside intersection; Ranger Station (with access to the visitor center and merry-go-round); Park Center (with access to the Old Zoo and Shane’s Inspiration playground); L.A. Zoo; Autry Museum; Pecan Grove; Los Angeles Steamers; Travel Town Museum; and Pony and Train Rides. “By uniting the icons of Griffith Park as well as its Metro and DASH stops, the Griffith Parkline is ushering in a new era for the nation's greatest urban park,” Councilmember David Ryu said. “For the first time in its 123-year history, visitors can access all that Griffith Park has to offer without once needing a car. The Griffith Parkline is free, accessible, and efficient — and just one way we are reducing traffic and increasing access in Griffith Park.” Griffith Park has experienced steady growth in visitation from locals and tourists in recent years, increasing vehicle congestion and parking demand. The Parkline Shuttle is the City’s latest effort to address these issues and encourage car-free public access while ensuring more visitors can enjoy the park and its amenities. Other improvements include a DASH service to connect visitors to the Metro Red Line, which moved more than half-a-million passengers last year; a reconfigured, more efficient traffic pattern; and enhanced wayfinding and signage throughout the Park. "Creating a network of opportunities while improving connectivity throughout the park will give many the option of enjoying all Griffith Park has to offer," said Mike Shull, General Manager of the Department of Recreation and Parks. "The Parkline Shuttle fulfills Recreation and Parks goal and commitment to the community. It is the most convenient, accessible and environmentally friendly way to get around Griffith Park.” "At LADOT, we pride ourselves on connecting Angelenos with experiences," said LADOT General Manager Seleta Reynolds. "The new, free Parkline service will give residents and visitors alike the chance to explore each of Griffith Park's iconic locations while cutting traffic and improving the experience for everyone.”

LA’S FILIPINOTOWN LEADER... FROM PAGE 2 Hall last October 26, 2018 to lobby for the designation of the Filipino Disciples Christian Church to the status of “historic cultural monument” at the US federal level. The said hearing was called by the California State Historical Resources Commission (CSHRC). In January this year, the CSHRC has written to the church informing them that the petition has been granted. “So, we are just waiting for them (CSHRC) to issue the formal resolution,” Ilagan said. In July 2017, Mayor Eric Garcetti and the City Council unanimously passed a resolution that honored the “potency of faith, hope and human compassion” of the people who founded, governed and participated in the existence of the Filipino Disciples Church (formerly known only Disciples of Christ.) “The church (the physical structure) has been recognized and yet there has been no formal recognition of the contributions of the Disciples of Christ to the development of the Filipino Disciples Christian Church,” Lorna Dumapias told Weekend Balita/US Asian Post when was still alive. The Filipino Cultural School was opened in the mid-sixties in the same church and the school offered studies on Philippine customs and tradition, Tagalog, history, folklores, songs and traditional dances. On May 5, 1998, the church, which was made more prominent by its German Gothic Revival architecture, was designated as Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No. 651 by the City Council. It remains as the city’s lone historic cultural monument with Filipino origins.

success in the coming year.” He continued by asking: “Where can you find inspiration to help others? to grow as a human being? and to overcome obstacles that life presents on a regular basis?” Dist. Gov. Blackwood quoted from Herbert Bayard Swope, an American editor who said: “I cannot give you a formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure, which is: to try and please everybody all the time.” Mr. Blackwood gave suggestions where to find inspiration. “Nature – go for a walk in nature, practice mindfulness, and lose the track of time. Find inspiration in people around you. Find inspiration in yourself by disconnecting for a while, giving yourself a pressure-free day with nothing to do except the things you enjoy. “We all need to be inspired to stay motivated. View POINT Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac why we need to know them better! The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) today announced that the maximum baseline conforming loan limits for mortgages acquired by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in 2020 will increase to $510,400 from $484,350. The loan limit will rise 5.38% in 2020 because FHFA has determined that the average U.S. home value increased by that amount between the third quarters of 2018 and 2019. Higher loan limits will be in effect in higher-cost areas as well. The new ceiling loan limit in high-cost markets will be $765,600. The previous ceiling was $726,525. Fannie Mae -- the Federal National Mortgage Association -- and Freddie Mac -- the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, while privately owned by shareholders are congressionally-authorized, “government sponsored enterprises” (GSEs) regulated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). As the largest sources of home financing in the U.S., Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, as regulated by HUD, are charged by Congress with “providing stability and liquidity in the secondary mortgage market, providing secondary market assistance relating to mortgages for low- and moderate-income families, and promoting access to mortgage credit throughout the Nation, including underserved areas.” Both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac fund residential mortgages by purchasing loans directly from lenders, such as mortgage bankers and depository institutions, and holding these loans in portfolio or by issuing mortgage-backed securities that are sold to a wide variety of investors in the capital markets. In lay mans terms, your mortgage loan is sort of like a commodity that is being traded in the secondary market ( like how Wall Street trade bonds & stocks). Usually its called MBS ( mortgage backed security), your major banks and lenders like BOA, Wells, Chase and everyone else that is claiming to be direct lenders are all just servicing these loans that are bought and sold back to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Since the mortgage crisis in 2008 both have gotten so vague about their strict guidelines, most lenders are over tightening their guidelines in order to make sure the loans being funded could be sold back to Fannie and Freddie. That is why everyone is complaining about difficulties in getting loans approved for the past couple of years. Now, there seem to be some good news that are being

STARTING THE NEW YEAR FRESH WITH A DIVORCE

TO many people, the New Year signifies a chance to have a fresh beginning. People dispose of old personal items and clean out the closet in order to make room for the new. This is also the time of the year many people realize when a marriage is not working out and it may be time to start a new life as a single person whether or not you have children. You can decide to take action and file a divorce. Before you take any action, you need to think about your situation carefully. First, you should decide whether you should move out of the family residence or not? If you and your spouse are communicating and have some type of respect left with one another, it may be more economical to continue residing in the same household until you resolve the issues in the divorce case. However, if your relationship is heated and riddled with conflict, then someone should move out. If your spouse has threatened you, hurt you, or committed domestic violence, you may file a domestic violence temporary restraining order and request the court to order your spouse to move out of the house. In the same application, you may also request for custody, support, and attorney’s fees. If on the other hand you decide to be the one to move out, you should move somewhere close to your spouse if you have children to make it easier for both of you to co-parent with the children. Second, you should decide whether your spouse is the type who will disclose all the

financial assets or not after you file for divorce. Although the family code (family code 2100 et seq.) imposes a duty to disclose all material facts and information, spouses’ are not always forthcoming in disclosing completely all assets, debts, income and expenses specially after a divorce case is commenced. What sometimes happens is once a divorce case is commenced, assets are either not disclosed, disappears, or documents/ bank statements are not produced even with formal discovery. You should gather and make copies of all financial documents before filing the divorce. Third, there is an automatic temporary restraining order (ATROS) in place once you file and serve your spouse with the divorce papers. The four standard mutual restraining orders are 1) removing their minor children from the state without the prior written consent of the other party or a court order. family code Section 2040(a)(1) 2) restraint from transferring, encumbering, hypothecating, concealing, or in any way disposing of any property, real or personal, whether community, quasi-community, or separate without the other party's written consent or court order; fam code 2040(a)(2) 3) restraint continUeD on page 7

spread around social media that Fannie and Freddie are going to loosen up their guidelines. I immediately start investigating on it and so far the supposedly new guidelines have not been released. There are talks of lowering down payment minimum requirement to 3% from 5%. And a few very minor changes towards Credit Fico requirements, I hope that more guidelines to ease lending will emerge, I still feel that there is a very unclear picture for lenders to follow, that is why they have gotten stricter due to uncertainty. At the same time Conventional financing is being loosened up, another news of FHA loans disallowing flipping within 90 days that might hurt first time buyers market conditions. The banks are complete disarrayed for a very simple reason that these guidelines that are continuing to change are so far confusing the funding lenders. To a point that they are not sure how to package and resell their loans back to Fannie and Freddie. One key factors why your loans are being declined by lenders, its because they cant sell your “Note” or loan back to Fannie and Freddie. So, if you are having difficulty qualifying its because you don’t fit Fannie and Freddies’ guidelines for lenders. Loans over $ 726,525 that are none QM (Qualified Mortgage) have a completely different set of guidelines and are mostly investors loans that are traded in Wall Street. If you are in the market to buy a home or refinance your current loan, be sure to talk to a qualified lender to know if there are things you need to work on or improve to be able to get the lower rates being offered now. Remember there are loans with a minimum of 5% down that do not require for homeowner to pay for PMI ( private mortgage insurance ). Please sort out better long term options. The forecast for Real Estate in 2020 should be good and stable, rates might be on a upward movement but I don’t suspect that it will go above 5% therefore, rates are still relatively low, we call it “borrowing Cheap Money”. The Philippine bet to Miss Supranational 2019, Resham Ramirez Saeed, has qualified for the pageant’s SupraChat Finals after she was named the Wild Card Winner this week. The international beauty contest has been in the thick of pageant activities in Poland’s Silesia Province all in the lead up to the coronation night on Saturday (Philippine time). A special addition to the competition this year was the candidates’ chat with reigning Miss Supranational Valeria Vasquez, where fans got the chance to know more about the women and vote for their favorite through the Miss Supranational app. Divided into 12 groups, four women automatically advanced to the Top 25 — chosen from two winners and two wild cards from Chat clusters 1 to 6 and Chat clusters 7 to 12. Born to a Filipina mother and a Pakistani father in Buluan, Maguindanao, Saeed is the eldest and only girl in a brood of four. The 25-year-old model was on a college scholarship majoring in psychology at York University in Canada prior to joining Binibining Pilipinas 2019. Raised in six different countries, as her father has been involved in international business, she learned to speak five languages fluently. Saeed hopes to gain the second Supranational crown for the Philippines after Mutya Datul’s win in 2013. Datul, who hails from Isabela, was also the first Asian to win the title in Minsk, Belarus that year. Vasquez, who hails from Puerto Rico, will crown her successor who will be chosen from among 77 candidates.

Are Your Debt Problems Putting Your Family’s Welfare At Risk? Are you worried about not being able to ta ke ca re of your family’s needs because of your debt problems? No one ever wants to be in this situation but I see it every day in my work as a bankruptcy attorney. When you are overwhelmed with debt problems, the situation becomes even more challenging when you have a family that are counting on you for financial support. Your paycheck may not even be enough to pay for basic living expenses like mortgage payments or rent, food, clothing, etc., let alone pay your monthly debt obligations. When you have to choose between paying your debts and meeting your family’s financial needs, that’s when you have a dilemma in your hands. You want to do the right thing by meeting your financial obligations but you also realize that you need to put family first before anything else. A lot of people wait too long to take action when they have bill collectors pursuing them. For a while, they ignore the phone calls and the letters, thinking that somehow their creditors will just give up and go away. Well, they may for a while but when collection efforts become more serious, you can get hit with a lawsuit. Once a lawsuit becomes a judgment, the creditor can then garnish your wages or levy on your bank accounts. I had a couple come to our office and this is exactly what happened. They were sued by American Express for $11,000 on a credit card account, which they ignored for a long time. They moved a couple of times since they fell behind on the debt so they thought that since the creditor no longer knew where they lived, they could just hide and ignore the bill. Lo and behold, checks that they wrote from their bank account started bouncing and they didn’t know why. Their bank then told them that their

account has been wiped out by a bank levy. Their paychecks and what little reserve they had in the bank (a total of about $9,000) all gone in one day! Now, they couldn’t even afford to pay their mortgage this month. Do you see how things can just easily snowball and get out of control unless you take action to stop problems from getting worse? Don’t let this happen to you. If you have debts in collection, don’t bury your head in the sand pretending that these debts don’t exist or you may be in for a rude awakening. I am not saying this to scare you into filing bankruptcy. In some cases, bankruptcy may not be your only solution. I am saying this so that you can at least find out what your options are before it’s too late if your debt problems are putting your family’s welfare at risk. You owe it to them and yourself to protect your income and everything that you’ve worked so hard for. A lot of families in debt are unable to save even a small amount of money every month because all of their disposable income is used to pay their debts. They zero savings which forces them to borrow even more just to meet any unexpected emergencies. Of course, this makes their situation worse because they’re already overextended as it is and they just keep on piling more debt that they cannot repay. It’s a vicious cycle and at some point, they will no longer be able to borrow and will be forced to file bankruptcy. If any of the above speaks to your current situation and you don’t know what to do, I can help you figure out the best solution for your situation. For a free attorney consultation,

CAREGIVERS:

Here Are The Top 7 Concerns Caregivers Have In Deciding To Assert An Unpaid Overtime Claim Caregivers are often overworked and underpaid. Our California lawmakers have enacted strong laws to protect caregivers and make it easier to recover unpaid wages. Still, many caregivers we speak with are reluctant to pursue their claims. Here are some of the most common concerns we hear from caregivers and the reasons why they should not prevent you from seeking justice and the compensation your are legally due. 1. Feelings of Obligations to Caregiving Recipients By nature, caregivers are typically caring people. Many private employers take advantage of a caregivers compassionate nature and do not pay a fair wage. Many caregivers feel uncomfortable going after those they provided care for and their family members. Many feel a sense of loyalty or obligation towards their employers. While this is noble sentiment, it does not change the fact that caregivers who have been paid less than the legally required wages are victims. In fact, many people who utilize in home caregivers are financially able to pay for caregiving services as required by law, but simply chose not to because they want to save money. We often see the children of elderly patients making efforts to preserve their own inheritance by taking advantage of caregivers. 2. I Do Not Have A Social Security Number. You do not need a social security number to recover overtime wages from your employer. If you win a settlement, we can help you get an ITIN that can be used to pay the taxes you owe. 3. I Am Concerned About Immigration Status. California law permits undocumented workers to recover unpaid overtime. In our experience, our undocumented clients have not suffered any

serious adverse effect from presenting an overtime claim. While we cannot guarantee no problem will arise, we believe the benefit in recovering your unpaid overtime outweighs your risk. We also have a relationship with an immigration attorney that can review and possibly assist you with your specific situation. 4. Fear of The Legal Process Many private employers pay caregivers less than is required because they believe caregivers are unsophisticated and will not be able to navigate the legal proceedings necessary to recover unpaid overtime. The legal process can be intimidating and confusing. But that is why the lawyers at Chaleff Rehwald are here to help. We know the law and stand ready to help you. 5. I Signed a Document Stating I am an Independent Contractor. It is unlikely that an in-home caregiver is an independent contractor under the law even if you have signed a document saying so. Still, it is popular for private employers to try to convince you that you are an independent contractor and pay you as one because it is much less costly and much more advantageous for them. The reality is that many private employers misclassify caregivers as independent contractors to avoid paying overtime. In many cases, a document stating a caregiver

is an “independent contractor” will have little impact on the caregiver’s ability to recoup unpaid overtime. Often, the employers retain so much control of a caregivers duties the true facts of the employment will overcome any purported agreement. 6. I Did Not Pay Taxes on The Wages I Did Receive. While we recommend that our clients pay all taxes owed for the wages received, if you have not paid taxes on your wages, you still have the right to seek the overtime wages you are due. It is the employer’s obligation to properly classify you as an employee and withhold state and federal income taxes from your paychecks. If this has not happened, it is also problematic for your employer who has violated the law. The most important thing to understand is that it does not impact your ability to recover unpaid overtime. 7. I Do Not Want to Get Involved in a Long Court Battle, and I May Leave the Country. Most cases settle without going to court, and many cases settle within a matter of a few months to a year. We regularly have clients who return to their home countries while the case is ongoing. All we need is the ability to contact you and have you return if necessary for the case. Because the laws are so strong in favor of the caregiver, most employers seek an early settlement of claims.

If you are working as a 24-hour caregiver and you are not paid overtime when working more than nine hours a day, or 45 hours a week, you should consult with Chaleff Rehwald to discuss your rights. We are here to help. With the penalties, interest, and attorneys fees allowed, claims often exceed $100,000 for 24-hour caregivers who have worked just one year. Even if you have only worked three to six months, you likely have a valuable claim. This article is an attorney advertisement written by Daniel Chaleff, employment law attorney at Chaleff Rehwald in Woodland Hills. Our examples are of a general nature and are not a guarantee regarding the outcome of your individual matter. The law firm focuses on caregiver rights. Please call us at (818) 807-4168 for a free and confidential consultation. Or visit us at www.cr.legal/ebook to learn more about caregiver overtime law. We offer a 24-hour chat line on our website.

4 kinds of fake news in PHL, including state-sponsored trolling —NATO Stratcom study A study published by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) detailed four models of disinformation in the Philippines, including a state-sponsored model that leads to the "silencing, self-censorship, and chilling effects among dissenters, and the public." The study, published by NATO Strategic Communications Center of Excellence, found the following models of "fake news" factories: • the in-house staff model • the advertising and public relations model • the clickbait model • the state-sponsored model The study is authored by Jonathan Corpus Ong, Associate Professor of Global Digital Media in the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and Jason Cabañes, Associate Professor of Communication in De La Salle University—Manila. Accord i ng to t he st udy, t he state-sponsored propaganda model assumes “intentionality from the president himself to intimidate and

harass his critics." "This involves him deploying the fake news label in tirades against mainstream media. His outbursts are usually a response to their unsavory reports of the government and his policies, most notably the war on drugs," read the study, which cited reporting from Rappler and Vera Files as sources of data for the state-sponsored model. "His message is taken forward by his so-called ‘keyboard army,’ consisting of hyper-partisan political pundits, social media influencers and fans,” it added. Of the four models, the "most politically agnostic and commercially driven model" is the clickbait model. "[C]lickbait websites are so profitable from ad tech alone that political pundits and influencers are happy to cash in from sharing their emotionally appealing but factually misleading stories,” they said. Meanwhile, the study found that "confident veterans of political campaigns, chiefs of staff" usually lead

the in-house staff model while politicians or private donors outsource trolling jobs to disinformation consultants in the public relations model. The study further noted that the perpetrators of fake news in the country are entrepreneurs who seek political and corporate clients. “The typical troll in the Philippines is not the sad nerdy guy living in his parents’ basement, but the savvy entrepreneur hyping their digital skills and seeking both political and corporate clients,” Ong said. “This kind of troll does not need to hide in the dark web or a black market; this troll is employed in the politician's in-house team, a PR firm or a digital marketing company,” he

added. Ong and Cabañes suggested concerned officials to conduct more research about the threat of the trolls, push for legal reforms including campaign transparency, increase transparency in the operations of social media platforms, and enact industry standards and mechanisms in the digital workplace that reward professional and ethical practice to counter fake news. ‘Be independent’: Journalists ask Congress to pass ABS-CBN franchise renewal bill MANILA — The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines on Friday called on Congress to pass the legislative franchise renewal of broadcasting giant ABS-CBN. President Rodrigo Duterte’s vow of blocking the renewal of ABS-CBN’s franchise has become “more than another idle threat,” which puts the ball clearly in Congress’ court, NUJP said. “The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines urges the legislature to uphold its independence and pass the franchise renewal of ABS-CBN,” the organization said. House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano—who earlier said he has a “personal complaint” against the television network—said the lower chamber would not be deliberating bills seeking to renew ABS-CBN’s franchise for the rest of 2019. Cayetano, an ally of the president, said legislators have “more than enough time” to tackle the proposed measure in January and February of next year. ABS-CBN’s legislative franchise expires on March 30, 2020, at which point their radio and broadcast operations will have to shut down if no renewal is approved. Early this week, Duterte, who has the power to veto bills that Congress approves, said the franchise will not be renewed. NUJP said between 10,000 and 11,000 who depend on

MANILA — The poor reading comprehension of Filipino students is a "reality" that must be recognized by the country in order to improve its educational system, Malacañang said Thursday. Filipino students ranked last among 79 countries in a global survey of reading comprehension, a result that the Palace opted to view in a "constructive" manner, according to Presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo. "[O]ur government's joining in this assessment program signifies that this administration is unafraid to open the eyes of the Filipino people to the reality in order for us to ascertain what steps to undertake so we can perform better in the aspect of education," he said. Over 600,000 students around the age of 15 from 79 different countries joined the reading assessment of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) in 2018. Filipino students got a rating of 340 points in the survey, which is lower than the average 487 points. Majority of Filipinos aged 15 are in Grade 9. Panelo said the Philippines joined the assessment as part of President Rodrigo Duterte's Quality Basic Education Reform Plan. He said the government is working to address gaps in the education sector. "Our education officials are on the right track as we address the issues and gaps in the basic education sector. These include a continuing review of the K to 12 program, improving our students' learning facilities and retooling the knowledge and skills of our teachers," he said.

oday, December 7, 2019, is a day when we honor those who perished during the World War II Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor 73 years ago, on December 7, 1941. It is quite timely that we were able to watch the war film "Midway," to commemorate this very significant day in history. The film was a project of producer Harald Kloser and Roland Emmerich, who likewise directed it. The story was written by Wes Tooke, who featured an ensemble cast, including Dennis Quaid, Woody Harrelson, Mandy Moore, Nick Jonas, Patrick Wilson, Ed Skrein, Luke Evans, Aaron Eckhart, Tadanobu Asano, and Fil-Am actor, Darren Criss. According to some mixed movie reports, the film was a passion project of Emmerich, who initially had trouble getting financial support, but ended up finally fundraising most of the budget himself, and officially announcing its production in 2017. Most of the cast joined in during the summer of 2018 and filming began in Hawaii on September, as well as in Montreal, Canada. Thus, the film's budget of $100 million, became known as the "most expensive independent film of all time." On November 8, 2019, the film "Midway," was theatrically released by Lionsgate. History has it that before the "start of World War II, the US Naval Attache in Tokyo and his counterpart, discuss the US and Japanese positions in the Pacific Ocean during a state function. Isoroku Yamamoto discreetly informed US naval intelligence officer Edwin T. Layton that they will take action if their oil supplies are threatened. And so, on December 7, 1941 they used their carrier fleet to "strike at Pearl Harbor and the attack

At this time, Layton then spoke with Nimitz over his failure to convince Washington of the impending attack. on Pearl Harbor. Nimitz instructed Layton to 'stick to his guns in the next battle with Washington,' so as to avoid a repeat of the surprise attack at Pearl Harbor." As a background on Japanese expansion, the "Japanese naval aggression advanced in the South Pacific from December, 1941 through April, 1942. " On December 8, 1041 (December 7, 1941, US time), Japan declared war on the US, and the British Empire "after Japanese forces attacked

In April, 1942, after the Doolittle RaiD (where Col James Doolittle demanded that the US military fi nd a way of striking back at Japan and the only possible method was with carrier-borne aircraft though standard naval planes had too short of a range, so the solution was to send a special unit of B25 Mitchel bombers trained by Doolittle to take off from the USS Hornet). the Japanese then turned their attention to the Coral Sea (a battle fought between the Imperial Japanese Navy and naval and air forces of the US Navy from the US and Australia, which took place between May 4-8, 1942 in the Pacific Ocean). What fans can expect from new LizQuen series 'Make It With You' “A

new LizQuen, a litt le more mature LizQuen.”

This is how Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil described their upcoming series, "Make It With You." In a digital press conference on Friday, the reel and real-life sweethearts shared details about their newest romantic comedy series. "It's another amazing, amazing love story. I hope na talagang they will really follow the journeys of the characters kasi they will really learn a lot as young Filipinos searching for themselves," Gil said. Soberano, for her part, added: "Ang dapat abangan siguro ng mga viewer ay the lessons we are going to impart through the teleserye -- value for work, value for career, for passion and love."

Entertainment In "Make It With You," Soberano plays the role of Billie, a free-spirited and hardworking OFW in Croatia. There, she meets the character of Gabo (Gil) who is on journey to find his true happiness. "We are happy to be doing a romantic comedy again because it's lighter, and we feel like this is what the viewers really like when they see LizQuen," Soberano said. When asked if their fans can expect kissing scenes in the series, the actress replied in jest: "Hindi lang kiss." "Joke lang 'yun!" she quickly added. "We will see, abangan niyo na lang po. Like he (Gil) said, it's more mature and daring pero not to the point na mayroong intimate scenes."

ALWAys together

For Gil and Soberano, "Make It With You" is another great opportunity for them to spend time together. Gil admitted that as of now, he could not imagine working with another leading lady. "Minsan nga parang iniisip ko, baka sa future na magkaibang project kami, 'Paano kaya 'yung feeling na wala na siya sa tent? 'Yung hindi kami minsan sabay pumupunta or hindi kami nagkikita?' Alam mo 'yung ganun?" he said. "Or 'yung... just I don't see her on tap-

ing and I won't be able to act with her, that's kinda sad." Nevertheless, Gil is not closing his doors on the idea of being paired with other actresses. "Of course, I mean we will have to grow eventually. Hindi naman puwedeng forever stuck into just a box because we won't really be able to grow as actors in our careers," he said. "We are open to it, but we are not in a rush," added Soberano. Directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina, "Make It With You" is scheduled for an early 2020 release. Soberano and Gil's last romantic series was "Dolce Amore" aired in 2016. (ABS-CBN News)

On June 4th, the Japanese launched an air attack against Midway and the Japanese fleet carriers failed to succeed in striking a US submarine called Nautlus. At this point the US carrier planes were launched in an effort to destroy the Japanese carriers and Japanese Vice Admiral Chuichi Nagumo ordered their Japanese carrier Arashi to keep the US submarine pinned down so that their carrier can escape. Though Vice Admiral Nagumo rearmed his planes for the anti-ship attack, Lieutenant Commander C Wade McCluskey, (played by Luke Evans) Commander of the USS Enterprise and Vice Admiral William "Bull" Halsey (played by Dennis Quaid, both successfully lead their planes through the anti-aircraft fi re and destroyed two Japanese carriers, Kaga and Akagi. Finally, Lieutenant Richard "Dick" Best, (played by Ed Skrein) Executive officer, Bombing Squadron of the USS Enterprise, received word that half of his squadron was either missing or destroyed. He then gathered every pilot he could and set off on the mission to attack the Japanese carrier Hiryu. Thus, best scored the most critical hit that destroyed Hiryu and upon learning this, Rear Admiral Raymond Spruance (played by Jake Weber), victoriously withdrew his fleet for the night. Meanwhile, Admiral Yamamoto likewise ordered his fleet to withdraw from the battle rather than risk his battleship without sufficient air cover, thus brining the Battle of Midway to a close in Pearl Harbor. So today, let us all bow our heads and pray for all those who perished at Pearl Harbor, fighting for our freedom and at the same time, celebrate the brave men and women who were there fighting for us. Let us all remember them for their courage and valor not just today but forever.

ctress Angel Locsin made it to Forbes Asia’s latest heroes of philanthropy list, which was released Monday.

For this year, Forbes recognized 30 notable philanthropists "committed to solving some of the most pressing issues facing the Asia-Pacific." The Kapamilya actress, who is active in doing charity work, was recognized for her efforts in giving out aid to the victims of violence and natural disasters. Forbes noted that after earthquakes hit Mindanao in October, Locsin donated P1 million and distributed "truckloads of relief supplies to affected residents." It also pointed out that during the 2017 battle between the military and Islamist rebels in Marawi, she joined the Rural Missionaries of the Philippines, "donating and distributing food packets and school supplies to tens of thousands of displaced victims." In September, she directly donated the money she would've used to buy a gown for the annual ABS-

"Over the past decade, Locsin has donated as much as P15 million to causes such as educational scholarships for students, supporting the economic and political rights of indigenous people, and ending violence against women and children," Forbes said, noting that she also inspired many of her millions of social media followers to give back. “It’s like taking little steps towards substantive, holistic change for the future of the next generations,” the magazine quoted Locsin as saying. “The only motivation we need is being part of humanity.” Aside from Locsin, also part of the 13th annual Heroes of Philanthropy list are Filipino businessman Hans Sy, Indian business tycoon Azim Premji, Australian billionaire Judith Neilson and Chinese tycoon Jack Ma. Bea Alonzo gets honest about forgiving Gerald Anderson MANILA, Philippines — Kapamilya actress Bea Alonzo admitted that she has not yet forgiven former boyfriend Gerald Anderson for breaking her heart. In an interview with Boy Abunda in “Tonight With Boy Abunda,” the host asked Bea, “Have you forgiven the last person who broke your heart?” “No,” Bea answered briefly. When asked if she will forgive that person, who many believe to be her ex-boyfriend Gerald, Bea said she will, but in time. “Tito Boy, kung tatanungin mo ko kung kailan? Hindi ko kayang sagutin, pero it's part of the process, it's part of my healing process,” the actress explained. “Of course, kahit hindi hingin. I have to. Forgiving yourself and forgiving someone is about freeing yourself from all the baggage, from all the pain that you've gone through and just moving forward,” she added. Bea also said in the same interview that she’s not looking for new love and she is now happy for many projects along her way. “Sa ngayon parang sinasabi kasi ng universe na, 'Oy mag-work ka muna, maging busy ka muna.' Kasi hindi ko din siya (love life) hinahanap honestly,” Bea said. (Philstar.com)

Nadine Lustre stuns at Asian Academy Creative Awards red carpet MANILA —Nadine Lustre looked stunning as she arrived at this year's Asian Academy Creative Awards (AACA) in Singapore on Friday. Lustre, who was in the running for the AACA's overall best actress award after winning the regional category, oozed glamour in a plunging silver Michael Leyva dress. Lustre was named the Philippines' best actress by the AACA for her performance in the movie "Ulan." She, however, lost in the overall category to India's Shefali Shah. She was joined on the red carpet by Dimples Romana, who got the nod for Best Supporting

Role for "Kadenang Ginto." Like Lustre, Romana failed to grab the overall award, losing to 10-year-old actress, Myanmar's Pyae Pyae. Lustre's "Ulan" co-star Carlo Aquino, director Irene Villamor, and Tirso Cruz III ("The General's Daughter") were also unsuccessful in taking home the overall awards in their respective categories, after being named the best in the Philippines. The AACA gala night was held at Singapore’s Victoria Theater. The academy aims to celebrate the best in Asian content --ranging from film to online-and to promote them internationally. Pia Wurtzbach, Marlon Stockinger 'never' getting back together — sources MIss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach and racecar driver Marlon Stockinger have broken up and "will never get back together," sources close to the couple exclusively told Philstar.com. The sources, who requested to stay private, claimed that Pia finally lost her patience with Marlon. The actress' private messages to the sources revealed that she was allegedly so upset with Marlon that she avowed to "never" return to his arms again. New high-profile suitor pursuing Pia Wurtzbach, sources say "The only reason why their relationship lasted this long is because Pia is always busy and out of the country," the sources told Philstar.com. "If she was not busy, she would have wanted to get rid of that guy a long time ago." The sources, however, did not confirm or deny rumors that Pia supported Marlon financially and his family since the latter allegedly does not earn

anything from being a racecar driver. The sources said Pia and Marlon had been allegedly fighting a lot. They claimed that whenever the couple would see each other after Pia had been abroad for quite some time, the two would allegedly spend their little time together fighting. Pia and Marlon a re yet to

ia and P confi rm n o l r Ma these claims. The two had been in an on-

and-off relationship for almost three years. Pia shared in a 2017 makeup tutorial video by Filipino-American beauty vlogger PatrickStarrr how she met Marlon. “I feel like I find everyone on Instagram. I found my boyfriend on Instagram," she said, recalling that after winning Miss Universe, she began following Marlon on the social media platform. After liking some of Marlon's pictures, the Filipino-Swiss model began noticing the beauty titlist. She had a big crush on the racecar driver even before she won. “At that time, I kept on losing Miss Philippines, and I’m thinking, ‘He’s never gonna notice me'," she told PatrickStarrr . During the Philippines' hosting of Miss Universe 2016 in January to February that year, rumors that Pia and Marlon were dating began to circulate as they were spotted in photo shoots and red carpet events together. Marlon then admitted that they were an item when he told reporters at the 2016 Star Magic Ball red carpet: “The truth? Let’s put it this way, if Pia was here tonight she’d be my date here, so yeah, obviously we see each other but

we just want to keep it down low pretty much but yeah, I’ve been seeing Pia.” After that, the two have been posting more and more photos of them together, even cuddling in the beach to show their amazing bodies and abs. But rumors that the two were headed to Splitsville began in March 2017, when Pia was asked by reporters to react on the news that Marlon has twins with a former model. “Huh? I don’t know anything about it,” she said. Last July 2018, the couple was rumored to have called it quits again when the two unfollowed each other on Instagram because Marlon allegedly got jealous of Pia's meeting with Choi Siwon of Korean pop group Super Junior. But days after, they followed each other again and many dismissed what happened as a normal misunderstanding between lovers. Early this year, sources confirmed to The STAR's Ricky Lo that the two have broken up, only to be dismissed by the couple by posting a new photo together days after. Will they do the same after this story has been published? Let's wait and see. (Philstar.com)

Tech biz group allays fears on AI MANILA — A session in the 11th Inter national Innovation Summit (IIS) organized by the IT and Business Process Association of the Philippines (IBPAP) on Tuesday clarified that artificial intelligence (AI) would not AI Future oF WorK. Carl Nicholas Ng, chief operations officer r epl ac e job s, of Spi Global (2nd from left), and other panelists say it is imcontrary to the possible for artificial intelligence (AI) to replace jobs, during beliefs and fear the 11th International Innovation Summit held in Manila on Tuesday. (November 12, 2019). He said AI would just probably of some. "Imagine be- change the nature of some jobs, and magnify what humans can ing told by a do best. (PNA photo by Cristina Arayata) robot that you have cancer. How would you react on that?," asked Carl Nicholas Ng, chief operations officer of Lifetrack Medical Systems. Ng said that AI does not replace workers, but rather, it replaces tasks. For the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry, for instance, some tasks are replaced because of AI. He cited as an example, that there is no more typing in some BPO companies. He said that AI would just probably change the nature of some jobs, and magnify what humans can do best. "AI creates a lot of economic opportunities because it will replace a lot of tasks," Ng said, adding that on a management's perspective, one may find it easier to manage machines than to manage 100 people. Joan Yao, vice president of Kickstart Ventures, said technology is enabling growth in unprecedented ways. Today, she said there is an estimated 25 billion connected devices globally. Experts estimate this figure to reach 75 billion globally by 2025, she added. According to Yao, businesses must take advantage of the technology to create social benefits, promote health, equity, and safety, among others. Yao also agreed that it is impossible for AI to replace jobs. "In 1956, Nobel Prize Winner in Economics, Herbert Simon, said, 'machines will be capable of doing any work a man can do'. Years have passed, but it doesn't appear that machines could actually replace humans," she said. Meanwhile, other discussions in the summit focused on human capital, wherein speakers analyzed opportunities for the industry to re-skill or up-skill its policy. They looked at policies that will help companies to continuously develop and grow. Lito Tayag, IBPAP chairman of the board, earlier said the summit aims to tackle creating business environment, while promoting an environment where the IT-BPM industry could thrive. Members of the academe and the business sector, among others, attended the summit. (PNA)

C A R A B A O ISLAND: PH's next Boracay? MANILA — While its arrivals cannot rival Boracay's yet, Carabao Island is striving to build its character as an up-and-coming tourist destination that can live up to the beauty of the world-famous resort island, offering a variety of exciting activities minus the crowd. The entire island, locally known as Hambil under the administration of San Jose, Romblon spans about 2,205 hectares featuring packets of secluded white-sand beaches and limestone formation that doubles as an entryway to its otherworldly caves. "Our vision here in Isla de Carabao, while we cannot compete with Boracay, we strive hard to improve the island and if possible best Boracay on development and preparation of the island (for the influx of tourists)," San Jose Mayor Ronnie Samson told the Philippine News Agency during the Carabao Island leg of the Department of Tourism (DOT) media familiarization tour in Romblon last week. The fate of Boracay apparently served as a lesson for the coastal town they increased their push to develop a tourism industry that is sustainable. Among the municipality's efforts include strong implementation of environmental laws and the management of sewerage in the island. "Kung ano man ang nangyari sa Boracay, iyon ang naging rason kung bakit kami nagtulong-tulong. Hindi namin hahayaan na mangyari iyon sa amin (What happened in Boracay was the reason we worked hand-in-hand. We won't let what happened to them happen here)," said Lealyn Pablo, San Jose tourism officer, referring to the six-month closure of the world-famous Boracay last year. In the first quarter of 2019 alone, tourist arrivals to the island municipality already reached 30,000 visitors breaching the 17,000 tourists recorded in 2018.

rawness of the island with its cogonroofed villas blending fittingly with its natural surroundings. The breathtaking site accentuates a 180-degree panoramic view of the ocean with the stunning sunset as the backdrop. Originally, the resort owners were looking for a property in Boracay, but with the price for real estate skyrocketing on the island, they opted for an alternative, hence the Oceans Edge. "Lahat ng gustong magtayo ng resorts sa Boracay (Everyone wants to put up a resort in Boracay) but then the prices there are skyrocketing, which I think for us was a blessing in disguise because if we went there and were affected by its closure while on our construction stage, it would've had a big an impact on our business," said Claribelle Alfeche, Oceans 11 Property Development Inc. chief executive officer (CEO) and owner. "We're thinking of alternative that if not Boracay, where is the best next location? So someone suggested Carabao Island," she added. The resort was opened to the public early 2019, proving that investors are starting to see the island's potential as a future top tourist-drawing destination.

'Caves and beaches'

It is much of a surprise that Romblon has more aside from the bucolic life, hectares of rice paddy fields, and black pebbled beaches it has. A visit to Carabao Island would easily break this notion. The island is blessed with a multitude of organic activities that allow visitors to appreciate its pristine beauty, experiencing nature as it is, such as spelunking and cliff diving to the clear cerulean sea. There is the Tan-agan Picnic Grove, the Poblacion White Beach, and the Cathedral Cave and Cliff. But for thrill-seekers, Cathedral Cave may just be the perfect spot to tour on the island. This alone draws a fair share of visitors from the nearby Boracay with only PHP100 as a general entrance fee, which covers a guided tour inside the actual cave where you can access and dip in the lagoon's cold glassy turquoise water. The entrance fee also includes an unlimited assisted cliff jumping even a non-swimmer or a beginner can tr y. The plunge, which will feel like a jump from a building's second or third floor, is both frightening and at the same time refreshing when you hit the water.

'How to get there'

'Potentials seen'

While it has not established itself as a buzzword in global travel yet, Carabao Island is ready to provide high-quality accommodations to both domestic and foreign tourists, keeping up with other destinations that offer both tranquility and luxury. Just this year, a new cliff resort was launched in the town aptly named as Oceans Edge. The new luxury boutique resort, a destination by itself, draws inspiration from the

The island is accessible via a pump boat from either Tablas or Caticlan where the nearest airports are located. In early 2017, Cebu Pacific launched its Tablas flight, the only airline flying directly from Manila to the area. Carabao Island is also a perfect side trip for those already in Boracay since the town is a mere 30-minute boat ride from the world-famous island. From Poblacion, San Jose, visitors can take a habal-habal for a trip around the lush island or rent a boat to visit its sprawling beach coves and cliff diving points. (PNA)

How to Throw a Gift Wrapping Party

W

hen the holidays are around the corner, or if a big gift giving event is drawing near, a gift wrapping party with your friends is just the thing to get all your presents wrapped up in time. throwing a gift wrapping party doesn’t have to take a lot of time or effort. With a little bit of planning, some ideas for setting the atmosphere for your party, and a handful of fun activities to do while the party is going on, your gift wrapping party is sure to be a hit. Planning Your Gift Wrapping Party

1. Stick to simple invites. A gift wrapping party, in essence, is about getting together with friends to have fun doing something that can be tedious and time consuming. Since this is a for-fun activity, there’s no point in stressing over fancy invites. A simple email to your friends and family should be more than enough to get the ball rolling in your party planning. If you plan on this gift wrapping party to be a more elegant affair, there’s nothing wrong with putting together formal invitations for your guests. 2. Choose a color scheme. An open color scheme for your wrapping party is perfectly fi ne. However, without a color scheme, you’ll have to buy a wider range of wrapping paper and supplies, which could add unnecessary expense. You’re already hosting the party and maybe even providing food, there’s no reason for you to go broke providing a rainbow of wrapping supplies! Some color schemes include: • Those related to the event you’re wrapping for. For example, if you’re wrapping Christmas presents, you might choose red and green. For a wedding, you might wrap presents in the wedding party’s colors. Seasonal color schemes. In fall, you might choose fall colors or a harvest theme. Rustic twine would work well in this situation in place of bows. During winter, consider blue, white, and

snowflake themes. • Color schemes that ref lect the recipient of the gift. For example, if you’re wrapping presents for a space enthusiast, you might choose cosmic themed wrapping paper, or black paper decorated with stickers that look like planets and stars. 3. Stock up on gift wrapping supplies. You should be able to purchase most of your gift wrapping supplies at general retailers, like Walmart and Target. Even grocery stores are likely to carry some wrapping paper, though the supply may be limited. A broader selection can be found at craft or hobby stores. Should you be on a budget, you might ask your guests to bring some supplies, too. Some you might want to stock up on include: Bows, Decorative tape (like washi tape or patterned duct tape), Gift bags/ boxes, Glue, Labels and tags, Pens and markers (for labeling presents), Ribbon, Straight edge or ruler, Stickers, Tape (many rolls), Twine, Wrapping paper (many rolls). 4. Fuel your wrapping with fi nger food. Depending on how many gifts need to be wrapped, you and your friends might be wrapping for quite some time. Have some non-messy finger food on hand so that your gift wrapping crew can eat when they’re hungry, without getting their hands greasy or sticky. 5. Keep guests hydrated with beverages. You don't have to feel obligated to provide everything. Many of your guests probably wouldn't mind bringing some juice, soda pop, sparkling water, wine, or other drinks. However, if you do want to provide drink, you could economize by making a large batch of: Sherbet punch, Fruit punch, Alcoholic punch, Hot apple cider. 6. Section off a landing zone for finished presents. If you and your guests are wrapping a lot of presents, these can accumulate inconveniently on your wrapping table or the floor. When this happens, wrapped gifts can be tripped over. In some cases, gifts might be lost, misplaced, or forgotten. Choose a location where gifts can be placed when they are done. You can further organize your gift landing zone by writing your and your guests' names on index cards. Use these

to separate finished presents, so none get mixed up in another person’s finished pile.

Setting the Atmosphere for the Party

1. Wrap household items as themed decorations. This not only has a decorative appeal while setting the tone for your party, it has the added bonus of protecting the surface of whatever you wrap. This kind of decoration is perfect for the table where you’ll be doing your wrapping. Adhesive from tape, errant marks from pens or markers, and so on can cause damage to your wrapping table. Protecting the table with a decorative layer of wrapping paper will help prevent this. 2. Put together a wrapping party playlist. You don’t have to choose a wrapping party themed playlist, though your guests might be impressed if you do. However, your favorite band or a seasonally appropriate playlist (like Christmas music during the holidays) will also provide a suitable ambiance to get your guests in the wrapping mood. 3. Play a related movie on a TV in the background. A little bit of background scenery can also add a lot to the atmosphere of your wrapping party. You may want to mute the sound on your TV or turn the volume down low so you can chat with your friends while you wrap.

Making the Party More Fun

1. Get creative with your embellishments. Wrapping all your presents the same way is a quick way to get your gifts under wraps, but a little dash of creativity will set your wrapped items apart from the rest. You may want to dress up especially important or expensive presents, or you may want to specially wrap presents for individuals who are dear to you, like your significant other, best friend, nephew/niece, and so on. For example, you might: - Include dollar store toys that are a theme the recipient likes. For example, a young boy might enjoy an army theme, in which case you could attach little army men to the outside of the wrapping paper with glue. - Substitute uncommon accents.

Instead of using a traditional bow or ribbon, you could upcycle an old tie and use that to fasten your wrapped gift. After it’s wrapped around the present, tie a bow. - Paint a thin layer of clear glue on your presents and sprinkle a layer of glitter to give the impression of sparkly snow on wintertime presents. 2. Award prizes for the best wrapped present. This is a great way to encourage your gift wrappers to step up their game and really have fun with the gift wrapping. At the end of the party, you could choose the best wrapped gift and award the prize yourself, or you could have all your guests vote to determine who gets the prize. 3. Set gift wrapping challenges. Spending all day wrapping presents, even with people that you enjoy spending time with, can sometimes get boring. Why not take a break and challenge your guests to a creative wrapping challenge? For example, you might use challenges like: - Who can wrap a present the best without using any tape. - Who can wrap a present the fastest and nicest. - Who can wrap a present best blindfolded. 4. Disguise easy to recognize presents. Many people try to hide irregularly shaped gifts in boxes or gift bags. These work very well, but you can also disguise these objects with a little cre-

ativity. To ensure your gift remains a mystery, you might want to try such disguises like: - A potted plant for lone gold clubs. You can decorate the club head as the base of a pot, then dress up the club handle like a flower, or you could transform the club head into the center of a bloom, with the handle as a stem. - An ornament for a toy ball. Set the ball in a large piece of tissue paper, gather the paper around the top of the ball, and tie together the gathered paper with ribbon. Attach a piece of gold wire ribbon to make a “hanger.” - A piece of candy for a bottle of wine. Wrap a bottle of wine in bubble wrap so that the wrap extends to the mouth of the bottle. Make sure the opposite end tapers similarly to the neck. Once it’s wrapped, it’ll look like a wrapped piece of candy, which might throw off the recipient. 5. Thank your guests for coming. This is especially important if your guests have come to help you wrap presents for a big event, like a wedding or a toy drive for the less fortunate. Your guests will surely appreciate even a verbal thank you, but you might also express your gratitude by: - Pre-writing thank you cards that you can hand out at the end of the party. - Making extra food, then sending guests home with leftovers. - Inviting your guests to visit next weekend for a thank you party. Classic Christmas Food In The Philippines

IN the Philippines, the Yuletide season is a jovial time of the year when people titillate their gusto and fill their stomachs with delightful Christmas food. As part of Pinoys’ Christmastime traditions, Filipinos would host buoyant parties that involve feasting on tasty gastronomic pleasures, together with relatives, friends, and family. From sweet traditional Filipino delicacies to tasty Italian staples, these social gatherings usually have an eclectic medley of luscious and hearty Christmas food. With all the mouthwatering Christmas foods up for grabs during this season, it is no wonder tons of Filipino enroll in gyms and fitness clubs in January. Celebrating the Yuletide season in the Philippines? Check out this list of the best and most delectable classic Christmas foods.

10. Christmas ham - Sweet and savory

9. Leche Flan - Luscious treat

Filipinos, in general, are fond of treats and delicacies that are as sweet as honey. That’s why most of the Christmas hams distributed in the Philippines are drenched with sweet syrupy glazes. To enjoy this kind of ham, you can eat it on its own, fry it to add more flavor, or pair it with a slice of kesong puti (a white cheese made from carabao’s milk).

Leche Flan, or better known as caramel custard in the Western world, is one of the top and most beloved desserts in the country, especially during festive celebrations like Christmas, birthdays, town fiestas and parties.

8. Lumpiang Ubod - A healthy option

kawaling pinoy

7. Fruit salad - A mixed bag of goodies Fruits, whether canned or fresh, are mixed together with condense milk and cream to provide the sweetness and color of this cold nectarous goodie.

6. Spaghetti - Filipino style A beloved Italian dish, the spaghetti has become a favorite in Christmas parties and Noche Buena gatherings in the Philippines. But unlike the traditional red tangy Italian spaghetti sauces, Filipinos prefer to enjoy this dish with a sauce that is a bit heavy on the sugar. To add an extra twist to this classic Italian goodie, Filipinos would also include bits of processed cheese and bright red hotdog to their spaghetti. Sounds weird? Trust me, this odd spaghetti recipe tastes good. kawaling pinoy

Is Christmas tree syndrome a real thing?

A

s Christmas edges closer, the media is rife with seasonal health stories. But can our Christmas trees really make us sick?

Fast forward to 2007, when Dr. Phillip Hemmers reported at the annual meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology in Dallas, TX, that he had followed the fate of one particular Christmas tree. He found that mold spores had gone up by more than fivefold during a 14-day period over the holidays, reaching 5,000 spores per cubic meter at the end of the festive period. In 2011, Dr. Lawrence E. Kurlandsky — along with his colleagues from the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse — published a more extensive study. Having analyzed clippings from 28 Christmas trees belonging to their team and fellow staff, they found 53 mold species, of which 70 percent were potentially harmful.

What is Christmas tree syndrome?

According to a plethora of news outlets and articles spanning the past decade, Christmas trees are a ready source of mold, which can wreak havoc in our respiratory tract and potentially spoil our holiday fun. This may be an issue for the roughly 13 percent of the population of the United States who are affected by mold allergy. But the studies cited are far from extensive, and mold allergy is not terribly well understood. So, do you need to be throwing doubtful glances at your carefully decorated Christmas conifer, or is the whole thing a holiday hype?

Christmas trees — yay or nay?

Mold spores, allergy, and asthma

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), "[I]f you have an allergy that occurs over several seasons, you may be allergic to the spores of molds or other fungi." Spores come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and they are ever-present in our environment — both indoors and outdoors. There may be in excess of 1 million fungal species that inhabit our planet, of which just over 100 families, or genera, can cause mold allergy. The main culprits, however, are just four: Alternaria, Cladosporium, Penicillium, and Aspergillus. Mold spores become dangerous when they reach critical levels. This is the case for individuals who have a mold allergy, as well as those with other allergies or asthma, where mold exposure can serve as a secondary trigger and make symptoms worse. Our weather and light levels affect the composition and levels of individual spore species, which are in constant flux. Our knowledge of critical spore levels is far from extensive, but studies have suggested that for Alternaria, levels can be as low as 100 spores per cubic meter, while for Cladosporium, it is 3,000 spores per cubic meter.

Are Christmas trees a health hazard?

It all started in 1970, when Dr. Derek M. Wyse published a paper titled "Christmas tree allergy: mold and pollen studies" in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. He found that approximately 7 percent of allergic people saw a spike in symptoms when they had a Christmas tree in their home. Yet, when he measured the variety of mold spores in 10 festive homes, he found his results largely inconclusive because the type of mold he found in the homes varied. Nonetheless, the term Christmas tree allergy was coined.

PhilHealth implements new premium rates in line with UHC MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) has come up with a circular on the new premium rates in line with the implementation of the Universal Health Care (UHC) act. Based on PhilHealth Circular No. 2019-0009 signed by PhilHealth president and chief executive officer Ricardo Morales, the monthly premium rate of its members shall increase by 0.25 percent or from 2.75 percent this year to three percent in 2020. This means that those earning a monthly basic salary of P10,000, for instance, will have to pay a monthly premium of P300 in 2020, up from P275 this year. The circular, however, showed that PhilHealth had adjusted the salary brackets covered by each premium category. For instance, those who will be getting a salary of P10,000 to P59,999.99 next year will have to pay P300 to P1,800 premium, while those with an income of P60,000 will have to pay P1,800. Under the current premium ratings, PhilHealth members who receive P10,000 to P49,999.99 pay P275 to P1,375 in premium every month. Those earning P50,000 pay P1,375.

The circular, dated October 25, indicates the premium rates until 2025. The new premium rates are in line with the implementation of the UHC act, under which all Filipinos should be enrolled in the state insurance program. The law also mandates the expansion of benefit packages being offered by PhilHealth. “Among the general objectives of the UHC act is to...ensure that all Filipinos are guaranteed equitable access to quality and affordable health care goods and services and protected against financial risk,” it said. The agency also noted that the law provides that the goals of UHC, including the provision of “individual-based health services,” shall “be financed primarily through prepayment mechanisms such as social health insurance, private health insurance and (health maintenance organization) plans to ensure predictability of health expenditures.” “This social health insurance program serves as the means for the healthy to help pay for the sick and for those who can afford medical care to subsidize those who cannot afford,” PhilHealth said. The implementation of UHC starts next year in some pilot areas nationwide. (The Philippine Star)

Winter sees an annual peak in colds, flu outbreaks, and asthma attacks. The exact reasons aren't known. But whether your Christmas tree or a combination of other factors is really to blame is difficult to say. However, if you do have allergies or asthma, it's worth taking the potential spike in tree-related spore levels seriously. Dr. Kurlandsky recommends washing your tree before bringing it inside, keeping it only for the minimum time possible, and using an air purifier to keep spore levels in check. The AAFA recommend keeping your living spaces clear of other sources of mold and reducing damp by lowering humidity levels. For those not affected by allergies, however, the alarm bells are off. "If you and your children don't have any obvious allergies, then it is probably not going to bother you," Dr. Kurlandsky says. (medicalnewstoday.com)

But little is known about the woman, and she is rarely ever in the public eye. Perhaps because the doting mother has always let her children—Boy, a celebrity, and Maria Fe, congresswoman for the lone district of Eastern Samar—take the spotlight.

J

But who is Nanay Lesing? Licerna Capito Romerica Abunda was born in 1929 in Samar. She worked for the government, serving as councilor of the City of Borongan for three terms, from 1995 to 2004. When her term ended, she was immediately elected Vice Mayor in 2004, and remained in the position until 2007. A Facebook user fondly recalled Nanay Lesing as “the teacher who helped me appreciate Christmas, the teacher who does not shout at her pupils, the teacher who gathers crayons when pupils go out hurriedly for recess.” What is most memorable, however, to those who know the woman who raised the most popular male talk show host in the country, is her life as an educator. Nanay Lesing was a teacher at the Campesao Elementary School, Borongan City, where she taught first grade for 43 years. In fact, most of the Abunda family members are big supporters of children’s education. In 2011, Boy donated a building and cash for the rondalla group of his mother’s former school. He has also been donating books and funds for teacher training. His late father, Eugenio Abunda, donated the lot where the school stood. When the Congresswoman Abunda announced on her Facebook page, @baysayeasternsamar, the passing of their mother, condolences and sympathies poured in. But many of the comments, too, were praises for the kind of wonderful teacher they remembered Nanay Lesing to be. One Facebook user named Crescentia Belizar, fondly recalled [edited in part] her as “the teacher who helped me appreciate Christmas, the teacher who does not shout at her pupils, the teacher who gathers crayons when pupils go out hurriedly for recess.” Another Facebook user named Lunee Amoyo Medina, wrote [edited], “Ma’am Lesing was my Grade 1 teacher. And she was one of those who made me the person that I am today. She was a person who valued punctuality (when coming to school at 6 a.m. sharp was a routine) and excellence. Before she became a public servant, she was first a mentor to many young minds.” Nanay Lesing’s Dementia In 2010, Nanay Lesing was diagnosed with

mentioned too that although he has prepared himself, at least financially, for the moment when he had to take care of his mother, it was no less difficult. Since the diagnosis, Nanay Lesing was cared for by nurses and caretakers 24/7, but Boy made sure he was present in her life for as many hours as possible. In the same interview, he said, “I am grateful in both joy and pain. Grateful because kahit nasasaktan ako, I am being given the chance by God to be the best mother to my mother.” He added, “I’ll be very honest. I don’t know how I’m going to live my life without the presence of my mother.” At the time, Nanay Lesing had been in the hospital for two weeks, and the family has been dealing with a lot of medical procedures, making tough decisions for the matriarch. Boy said he was just happy he was able to feed his mother at least five teaspoons of lugaw the night before. To immortalize Nanay Lesing’s love and efforts, Boy founded the Make Your Nanay Proud (MYNP) Foundation Inc., which aims to honor mothers, and find ways to mold citizens to become someone their mothers

would be proud of. In an October 2019 episode of the entertainment talk show Tonight with Boy Abunda, Vice Ganda took the role of hosting from Boy and asked the TWBA star the hard questions. At one point, Vice asked Boy to name one moment with his mother that he wished she, despite the dementia, would still remember. Boy narrated a time when he, as a young student, had to perform a declamation piece in front of a crowd. When he took to the stage, he unfortunately forgot his lines. But his mother, whom he could see standing at the far-end of the audience, looked proud anyway. After the contest, he remembered his mother telling him “even before a contest begins, you’re my winner.” A tearful Boy then concluded: “I am able to say that I am okay because Nanay made me believe that I am okay.” Nanay Lesing’s wake at the Arlington Memorial Chapels and Crematory, Quezon City, will be until December 4. Her ashes will be brought to Samar, where a wake will be held for three days. The ashes will then be brought back to Manila for the inurnment. (ABS-CBN News)

A Christmas miracle? Research suggests Santa was real By Honor Whiteman Fact checked by Jasmin Collier

I

t’s Christmas Eve. As I lie awake in my bed, I hear some rustling downstairs. “Is it Santa?” I think to my 7-year-old self. So, I quietly tiptoe down the stairs. There’s my mom, placing presents under the tree “from Santa.” That was the moment I realized that Santa wasn’t real. But that doesn’t mean he never was. The history of Santa Claus is an interesting one. Legend has it that the jolly man in the red suit is based on a real person: a Christian bishop called St. Nicholas. Born in the 3rd century in Patara, Turkey — which is a region that was Greek at the time — St. Nicholas is believed to have dedicated his life to helping those less fortunate, from young children to sailors. It is this generosity that is thought to have inspired the story of Santa Claus, a man who travels around the globe on Christmas Eve, delivering gifts to good little boys and girls. But researchers from Oxford University in the United Kingdom suggest that St. Nicholas is more than a legend; they reveal how ancient bone fragments that have been discovered in churches around the world may all belong to the man himself.

Testing the bones of St. Nicholas

Since 1087 AD, what are believed to be the remains of St. Nicholas have been held in a crypt at the Basilica di San Nicola in Bari, Italy. It is said that the remains were taken there by Italian merchants, around 700 years after his death — which

many historians claim occurred around 343 AD. However, bone fragments also thought to belong to St. Nicholas have been attained by various churches worldwide. So can these scattered fragments really belong to the same person? To find out, Prof. Tom Higham — a director of the Relics Cluster at the Advanced Studies Centre at Oxford's Keble College — and colleagues used radiocarbon dating on a sample of one of these bones. "Where once we needed physical portions of a bone sample, we can now test milligram size, micro-samples — opening up a new world of archaeological study," says Dr. Georges Kazan, also a director of the Relics Cluster. The sample was from a pelvis bone, acquired by Father Dennis O'Neill, of St. Martha of Bethany Church, Shrine of All Saints in Morton Grove, IL. Interestingly, the remains of St. Nicholas held in Bari do not include the full pelvis.

The remains of St. Nicholas himself?

From the radiocarbon testing, Prof. Higham and colleagues were able to date the bones back to the 4th century, which corresponds with the suggested date of St. Nicholas's death. "Many relics that we study turn out to date to a period somewhat later than the historic attestation would suggest. This bone fragment, in contrast, suggests that we could possibly be looking at remains from St. Nicholas himself."

As well as the remains in Bari, more than 500 bone fragments believed to belong to St. Nicholas are also being held in Venice, Italy. Prof. Higham and his team now plan to test all of these fragments, with the aim of showing that they are all from the same individual. "We can do this using ancient palaeogenomics, or DNA testing," says Dr. Kazan. "It is exciting to think that these relics, which date from such an ancient time, could in fact be genuine." GAZINI NAMES HER TOP 5 MISS UNIVERSE CANDIDATES

G

azini ganados is hoping to clinch a backto-back crown for the philippines in Miss universe, after the 2018 reign of compatriot Catriona gray.

While that’s the case, Ganados only has glowing words for her competitors in the international pageant, and has even named her own top 5 picks in a recent video from Binibining Pilipinas. In no particular order, she picked Frederika Cull of Indonesia, Zozibini Tunzi of South Africa, Fahsai Paweensuda Drouin of Thailand, Julia Horta of Brazil, and Gabriela Tafur of Colombia. Ganados commended Miss Indonesia for her sophistication,

Miss South Africa for her advocacy for women’s rights, Miss Thailand for her elegance and charity work, Miss Brazil for her fashion sense and approaching demeanor, and Miss Colombia for her fitness and beauty. Brazil’s Horta and Colombia’s Tafur went on to become among Ganados’ first friends in Atlanta, USA — where the pageant will be held — going by an identical group photo they all shared on Instagram.

gAzINI gANAdos is hoping to succeed her compatriot gray to become the 5th Filipina titlist of Miss universe. The Miss Universe coronation is scheduled on December 8 in Atlanta, Georgia, or December 9, 8 a.m. Manila time, w ith a live broadcast on ABS-CBN.

Unveiled by Catriona, new Miss Universe crown symbolizes powerful message

The Filipino beauty queen joined Miss Universe Organization (MUO) President Paula Shugart and Mouawad co-guardian Pascual Mouawad in presenting the crown, coinciding with the ongoing Miss Universe activities in Atlanta, Georgia. Gray wore the legacy Mikimoto crown when she was proclaimed Miss Universe 2018, and was seen in media tours sporting the pearl and diamond headpiece in the earlier part of her reign, including her homecoming. The Power of Unity marks the first collaboration of MUO and Mouawad which, since its inception in Lebanon in 1890, has become an international luxury jewelry firm. Valued at $5 million (or around P254 million), the Mouawad crown is crafted in 18-karat gold and hand-set with more than 1,770 diamonds, including a centerpiece shield-cut golden canary diamond weighing 62.83 carats. “Our creative journey with this first official Mouawad Miss Universe crown took empowerment of women as its key inspiration,” Pascal Mouawad said. “This had to be the crown that is not only fit for a queen, but which carried with it a powerful message. It had to represent the coming together of women

from across the world, united in their commitment to do good, and make the world a better place,” he said. The details of leaves, petals, and vines in diamonds, Mouawad explained, represent “communities across the seven continents whose bonds unite them in the common purpose of empowering one another as a force for good.” The centerpiece’s color, meanwhile, was chosen for its “sun-like warmth” that symbolizes the “optimism created when communities come together to build a better future.” The crown’s title, Mouawad added, aims to “send a message to the world to unite in the cause of humanity, and to use this humanity as a shield against biases to create a world of equal opportunity for all humans.” One of 90 candidates from around the world will be the first to wear the Power of Unity crown as a Miss Universe titleholder come December 9 (Manila time). Gazini Ganados is hoping to succeed her compatriot Gray to become the 5th Filipina titlist of the pageant. If she manages the feat, the Philippines will become only the second country to do so, after the 2008-2009 wins of Venezuela. (ABS-CBN News)

Gazini on what sets her apart from Pia, Catriona gAzINI Ganados had a ready answer when asked what sets her apart from Pia Wurtzbach and Catriona Gray, her Miss Universe Philippines predecessors who went on to claim the international title in 2015 and 2018, respectively. “Everyone’s unique, and I know for a fact that we all carry different causes. I think that’s what makes me unique, the causes that we bring into Miss Universe,” she said, referring to her advocacy of improving elderly care in the Philippines. Wurtzbach was known for her vocal stance on HIV/AIDS awareness, while Gray drew attention to the lack of education for underprivileged children in Manila. Ganados spoke with ABS-CBN News’ Dyan Castillejo on Friday on the sidelines of the ongoing Miss Universe 2019 pageant in Atlanta, USA, where Gray will her crown her successor on December 8 (December 9 in Manila). Ganados and Gray met briefly the night prior during a pre-pageant activity, as seen in a selfie the 2019 candidate shared on Instagram.

“She’s really sweet, she’s still nice,” Ganados said of her compatriot. “I think that she is doing really, really great. She told me that she can’t wait for the new journey she will have.” At the time of the interview, Ganados was set to undergo a preliminary interview with the judges, where candidates are usually quizzed on their personal background. “What I want them to know is that I’m not just a beautiful representative from the Philippines… I am a woman with a purpose, beyond beauty,” she said.
