The Very First Labor Day was September 5, 1882 THE very first Labor Day was held on a Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City. Thousands of workers paraded from City Hall up to Union Square where they held a picnic, a concert and labor leaders delivered speeches. Soon after, the celebration was moved to the first Monday in September. Congress passed a legislation making Labor Day a national holiday in 1894.

Matthew Maguire or Peter J. McGuire?

One account said it was Matthew Maguire, secretary of the Central Labor Union (CLU), who first proposed that a national Labor Day holiday be held on the first Monday of each September. It was supposedly an aftermath of a successful general assembly of the Knights of Labor that was convened in New York City in

September 1882. In connection with this clandestine Knights assembly, a public parade of various labor organizations was held on September 5. An alternative thesis maintains that the idea of Labor Day was the brainchild of Peter J. McGuire, vice president of the American Federation of Labor, who put forward the initial proposal in the spring of 1882. According to McGuire, on May 8, 1882, he made a proposition to the fledgling Central Labor Union in New York City to set aside a day for a "general holiday for the laboring classes.” According to McGuire, he recommended that the event should begin with a street parade as a public demonstration of organized labor's solidarity and strength, with the march followed by a picnic, to which participating local

SOCIAL nORMS SHAPE AnSWERS

According to this research, societal expectations about the roles played in married-couple relationships may be a factor in what people report for their earnings. Social norms can drive expectations and behavior, including how we report information about ourselves to others. “We made a critical finding that adds to the understanding of gender norms and the quality of income statistics, in particular wage gaps among different-sex married couples,”

said Marta Murray-Close, economist at the Census Bureau and coauthor of the study. Researchers used survey responses from the Current Population Survey’s Annual Social and Economic Supplement. They found that when wives earn more than their husbands, husbands report earnings that are 2.9 percentage points higher when they respond to surveys compared to what’s in their tax filings.

WHO REALLY EARnS MORE?

Take a husband in Fargo, N.D., who lives in a household where the wife earns more. If he reported annual earnings of $30,000, he would tell the Census Bureau he earned more -- an average $30,870 during that same year. That’s $870 more than his earnings as reported by his employer(s). The gap is 1.5 percentage points lower for wives who make more than their husbands. Let us say, for example, that the same man’s wife earns $40,000. On average, her reported earnings would be equivalent to $39,400, around $600 less than she actu-

ally earned. The overall impact on family earnings for this household is about $300 more than their employer-reported earnings.

DIFFEREnT AnSWERS FROM HUSBAnDS AnD WIVES

Does it matter whether the husband or wife responds to the survey? The answer is yes. We analyzed survey reported earnings based on whether the response came directly from the survey respondent or a proxy, such as their spouse answering the question for them. When a wife earns more, both husbands and wives exaggerate the husband’s earnings and diminish the wife’s. But, husbands overstate their own earnings less than wives do, and wives devalue their own earnings less than husbands do. In other words, survey reports of earnings are more heavily influenced by gender norms when earnings are reported by a person’s spouse.

HOW SOCIETY InFLUEnCES EARnInGS DATA

These differences can impact our understanding of national statistics on income, inequality and poverty. In this analytical sample, around 1 in 4 couples (22.9 percent) live in nontraditional marriages where the wife earns more than the husband does. As nontraditional marriages become more common, self-reported earnings data could The findings demonstrate the importance of understanding societal norms and their influence on data collection and survey responses. Using alternative sources of data helps confirm the accuracy of surveys. The world of big data and administrative records is becoming more important. The research also provides evidence that building systems and structures that rely on alternative data sources and mechanisms — rather than just self-reported survey responses — should continue. 1st officially recognized Labor Day celebration

In 1887, Oregon became the first state of the United States to make Labor Day an official public holiday. It became an official federal holiday in 1894, with 30 US states officially celebrating Labor Day.

May 1 versus September 1

The date of May 1 (an ancient European folk holiday known as May Day) emerged in 1886 as an alternative holiday for the celebration of labor, later becoming known as International Workers' Day. The date had its origins at the 1885 convention of the American Federation of Labor, which passed a resolution calling for the adoption of an eight-hour workday effective May 1, 1886.

While negotiation was envisioned for the achievement of the shortened work day, the use of the strike to enforce this demand was recognized, with May 1 advocated as a date for coordinated strike action. The proximity of the date to the bloody Haymarket affair of May 4, 1886, further accentuated May First's radical reputation. (On May 4, 1886, a labor protest rally near Chicago's Haymarket Square turned into a riot after someone threw a bomb at police. At least eight people died as a result of the violence that day. Despite a lack of evidence against them, eight radical labor activists were convicted in connection with the bombing.) There was disagreement among labor unions about when to hold a holiday to celebrate workers. Some advocated

for continued emphasis of the September march-and-picnic date while others sought the designation of the more politically charged date of May 1. Conservative Democratic President Grover Cleveland was one of those concerned that a labor holiday on May 1 would tend to become a commemoration of the Haymarket Affair and would strengthen socialist and anarchist movements that backed the May 1 commemoration around the globe. In 1887, Cleveland publicly supported the September Labor Day holiday as a less inflammatory alternative. The date was formally adopted as a United States federal holiday in 1894.

Lacson wants 'designated survivor' in case of major attack, disaster

President Rodrigo Duterte takes a bow after delivering his fourth State of the Nation Address at the House of Representatives in Quezon City on July 22, 2019. The president is flanked by Senate President Vicente Sotto III and House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano. Presidential Photo/Alfred Frias

MANILA — Sen. Panfilo Lacson has proposed assigning a "designated survivor" to ensure government stability in case of any terrorist attack, major disaster or other exceptional circumstances. The senator filed Senate Bill 982 or "An Act Prescribing the Order of Presidential Succession." In his explanatory note, Lacson noted that the legislature is constitutionally mandated to enact a law that would identify who will serve as president in case of death, permanent disability or resignation of the acting president. "This bill adheres to the abovementioned mandate and seeks to provide an exhaustive line/order of presidential succession in the event of death, permanent disability, removal from office or resignation of the acting president to ensure that the office of the president is never vacated even in exceptional circumstances," Lacson said. Under the 1987 Constitution, the vice president is next in the line of succession in case of the president's inability to discharge duties, followed by the Senate president and the House speaker. Lacson suggested an extended order of succession in case of death or permanent disability of the four top government officials. Lacson's bill proposes the following line of succession: • the most senior senator based on length of service in the Senate • the most senior representative based on the length of service in the House of Representatives • the member of the Cabinet designated by the president The senator also suggested that a Cabinet member be sequestered in a secret and secure location prior to any public or private event that the president, vice president or other high ranking officials will attend. "In the event of an extraordinary circumstance resulting in the death or permanent disability of the president, vice president and the officials mentioned… the designated member of the Cabinet shall act as president," Lacson said. "Official actions of the acting president pertaining to the day-to-day operation of the Government of the Republic of the Philippines shall remain effective unless revoked by the elected president within ninety days from his or her assumption or reassumption of office," Lacson's bill read. 'Designated survivor' in the US

The "designated survivor" policy is enacted in the United States, where a Cabinet member is sequestered in a secret and secure location when the president, vice president and other officials in the line of succession are gathered in one event. This is usually during the State of the Union address, presidential inauguration and presidential address to a joint session of Congress. According to a 2007 CBS News report on former US Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman, a designated survivor for the State of the Union address that year, he was told to leave Wahington DC and given presidential level security and transportation. "Not only did Glickman have a sizeable Secret Service detail, he says his entourage included a military aide that he thinks was carrying what's known as 'the football.' That's the special briefcase carrying the codes by which the President can launch nuclear missiles," the CBS News report said. According to the United States Code, the speaker of the House of Representatives "shall, upon his resignation as speaker and as representative in Congress, act as president," in case the president and the vice president both cannot fulfill their duties. In case the speaker is also unable to take on the duty of acting president, the order of succession is as follows: "Secretary of State, Secretary of the Treasury, Secretary of Defense, Attorney General, Secretary of the Interior, Secretary of Agriculture, Secretary of Commerce, Secretary of Labor, Secretary of Health and Human Services, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Secretary of Transportation, Secretary of Energy, Secretary of Education, Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Secretary of Homeland Security." Succession is just one part of the US National Continuity Policy, which requires the federal government "to establish continuity program and planning requirements for executive departments and agencies." "These required elements include delineation of essential functions; succession to office and delegations of authority; safekeeping of and access to essential records; continuity locations; continuity communications; human resources planning; devolution of essential functions; reconstitution; and program validation through testing, training, and exercises," the US Department of Homeland Security says in its Federal Continuity Directive. Angara: Let's work on decongesting Metro Manila now Expanding and rehabilitating the railway systems should be the first step taken in the efforts of the government to decongest traffic in Metro Manila if it wants to make an impact right away, Senator Sonny Angara said. Angara, chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, vowed to look for ways to support the programs of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to decongest Metro Manila, not only for the long-term, but also in the short and medium term for the sake of the commuters, motorists and the economy as a whole. "We need to find ways to decongest Metro Manila immediately. It pains us to see commuters lining up for hours every day to ride the MRT or buses to work and school. Motorists waste so much time stuck on the roads when they could be productive in their offices. Something has to be done about this right now," Angara said. The DOTr has several projects aimed at decongesting the roads in Metro Manila, some of which are already being implemented while the others are still in the pipeline. These include the rehabilitation of the MRT-3, the revival of the Philippine National Rail (PNR) trains and the development of a subway system. During a briefing on the proposed P147 billion budget of the DOTr for 2020, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade acknowledged that increasing the number of "trains" within and outside of Metro Manila is key to reducing the volume of vehicles on the Metro roads. The DOTr noted that for every train pulling eight cars, 448 vehicles could

be removed from the roads, assuming each car carries five passengers. However, the task of rehabilitating the railways would be very challenging based on the data presented by the DOTr. In 1938, at the peak of the railway system in the country, there were 2,400 kilometers of railroad tracks across the country. Now, there are only 77 kilometers left and this includes the MRT and LRT lines. "We have regressed. That is the tyranny of the automobile. So I think we need to reboot our thinking," Angara said. Angara said there is reason for optimism for Metro Manila commuters and motorists in the short and medium term. Construction for the first phase of the Metro Manila subway system is set to start this November. Once completed, the subway will connect Mindanao Avenue in Quezon City to the NAIA Terminal 3 in Pasay City. The MRT-3 along EDSA will also undergo rehabilitation, which would allow the trains to move faster and transport more passengers daily. The LRT-1 extension to Cavite is also underway to connect the large number of residents in the province to Metro Manila where they work. A new and improved PNR is also in the pipeline. The high-speed rail project will connect Manila to Batangas to Sorsogon. "Many of these projects will not be completed by the end of President Duterte's term in 2022. But we have to get to work on this now so that the public will be able to benefit from these at the soonest possible time," Angara said. (Bagong Senado)

Caregivers are often overworked and underpaid. Our California lawmakers have enacted strong laws to protect caregivers and make it easier to recover unpaid wages. Still, many caregivers we speak with are reluctant to pursue their claims. Here are some of the most common concerns we hear from caregivers and the reasons why they should not prevent you from seeking justice and the compensation your are legally due.

Saturday-Friday | August 31 - September 6, 2019

CAREGIVERS: Here Are The Top 7 Concerns Caregivers Have In Deciding To Assert An Unpaid Overtime Claim

1. Feelings of Obligations to Caregiving Recipients.

By nature, caregivers are typically caring people. Many private employers take advantage of a caregivers compassionate nature and do not pay a fair wage. Many caregivers feel uncomfortable going after those they provided care for and their family members. Many feel a sense of loyalty or obligation towards their employers. While this is noble sentiment, it does not change the fact that caregivers who have been paid less than the legally required wages are victims. In fact, many people who utilize in home caregivers are financially able to pay for caregiving services as required by law, but simply chose not to because they want to save money. We often see the children of elderly patients making efforts to preserve their own inheritance by taking advantage of caregivers.

2. I Do Not Have A Social Security Number.

You do not need a social security number to recover overtime wages from your employer. If you win a settlement, we can help you get an ITIN that can be used to pay the taxes you owe.

3. I Am Concerned About Immigration Status.

California law permits undocumented workers to recover unpaid overtime. In our experience, our undocumented clients have not suffered any serious adverse effect from presenting an overtime claim. While we cannot guarantee no problem will arise, we believe the benefit in recovering your unpaid overtime outweighs your risk. 4. Fear of The Legal Process.

Many private employers pay caregivers less than is required because they believe caregivers are unsophisticated and will not be able to navigate the legal proceedings necessary to recover unpaid overtime. The legal process can be intimidating and confusing. But that is why the lawyers at Chaleff Rehwald are here to help. We know the law and stand ready to help you.

5. I Signed a Document Stating I am an Independent Contractor.

It is unlikely that an in-home caregiver is an independent contractor under the law even if you have signed a document saying so. Still, it is

popular for private employers to try to convince you that you are an independent contractor and pay you as one because it is much less costly and much more advantageous for them. The reality is that many private employers misclassify caregivers as independent contractors to avoid paying overtime. In many cases, a document stating a caregiver is an “independent contractor” will have little impact on the caregiver’s ability to recoup unpaid overtime. Often, the employers retain so much control of a caregivers duties the true facts of the employment will overcome any purported agreement.

6. I Did Not Pay Taxes on The Wages I Did Receive.

While we recommend that our clients pay all taxes owed for the wages received, if you have not paid taxes on your wages, you still have the right to seek the overtime wages you are due. It is the employer’s obligation to properly classify you as an employee and withhold state and federal income taxes from your paychecks. If this has not happened, it is also problematic for your employer who has violated the law. The most important thing to understand is that it does not impact your ability to recover unpaid overtime.

7. I Do Not Want to Get Involved in a Long Court Battle, and I May Leave the Country.

Most cases settle without going to court, and many cases settle within a matter of a few months to a year. We regularly have clients who return to their home countries while the case is ongoing. All we need is the ability to contact you and have you return if necessary for the case. Because the laws are so strong in favor of the caregiver, most employers seek an early settlement of claims. If you are working as a 24-hour caregiver and you are not paid overtime when working more than nine hours a day, or 45 hours a week, you should consult with Chaleff Rehwald to discuss your rights. We are here to help. With the penalties, interest, and attorneys fees allowed, claims often exceed $100,000 for 24-hour caregivers who have worked just one year. Even if you have only worked three to six months, you likely have a valuable claim. This article is an attorney advertisement written by Daniel Chaleff, employment law attorney at Chaleff Rehwald in Woodland Hills. Our examples are of a general nature and are not a guarantee regarding the outcome of your individual matter. The law firm focuses on caregiver rights. Please call us at (818) 807-4168 for a free and confidential consultation. Or visit us at www.cr.legal/ebook to learn more about caregiver overtime law. We offer a 24-hour chat line on our website.

OUTRIGHT LIE, IMPOSSIBLE’

Robredo answers sedition rap at DOJ with an alibi Vice President Leni Robredo has formally answered the police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group’s (CIDG) sedition complaint against her, calling the basis for the charge an "outright lie." Robredo, among the dozens of respondents to the complaint that accuses them of involvement in a plot to discredit and overthrow President Rodrigo Duterte, went to the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Thursday afternoon to file her counter-affidavit before one of the prosecutors investigating the charges. Peter Joemel Advincula alias Bikoy, the CIDG’s lone witness, specifically alleged that the vice president attended a meeting with members of the Otso Diretso opposition senatorial slate, except former Interior chief Mar Roxas, and four others at the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) last March 4. The personalities allegedly discussed campaign strategies and Project Sodoma, an alleged plot to

robredo

discredit the Duterte administration during the meeting. In her counter-affidavit, however, Robredo claimed it was “impossible” for her to have been in the purported meeting because she was in Bulacan that day for several engagements that she said were documented and even covered by the media. She said she was in Dr. Yanga’s Colleges, Inc. to give a talk to student leaders, then in an Ahon Laylayan Koalisyon planning session, then in a dialogue with women leaders, activities that lasted from around 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. She said she was accompanied by her staff back to her house at 6:30 p.m. “Simply, I was not at the Leong Hall of ADMU on March 4, 2019, and it was impossible for me to have been physically present there at the time mentioned by Mr. Advincula,” Robredo said, through her lawyers, in the counter-affidavit. “Aside from this bare and perjurious allegation of my purported presence in an alleged meeting on March 4, 2019, which again, is impossible, there is no other allegation of any act on my part in furtherance of the alleged crimes charged,” she added. She also called out the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG), lawyer for the CIDG, on its alleged “erroneous” statement that she “repeatedly met” with Advincula, a claim that she said “directly contradicts” the allegation made by the man himself in his sworn statement. And even as she said she considers the CIDG’s complaint an act of harassment and persecution

for her “critical” views toward the administration, she claimed she “will never be part of any destabilization plot since this is a subversion of the will of the people.” Robredo and a number of the other respondents had earlier sought the deferment of the filing of their counter-affidavits pending the submission of more evidence by the CIDG. But the OSG, representing the CIDG, said the evidence it had turned in was “sufficient” for the preliminary investigation stage at the DOJ. In an Aug. 23 order, the investigating prosecutors decided to deny motions for the suspension of proceedings. The panel also asserted its authority to conduct the probe. Earlier this month, the panel ordered the OSG to furnish copies of the contents of a flash drive it had submitted as evidence to the respondents. But when asked what it contained, Robredo’s lawyer Marlon Manuel said it was the Ang Totoong Narcolist videos, the series of videos in which a hooded figure named Bikoy, the man Advincula claims to be, implicated members of the First Family in the illegal drug trade. “So ‘yung inaasahan natin na dagdag na ebidensiya na USB, ang laman noon ay kung ano ‘yung online, kung ano ‘yung nailabas na,” said Manuel, who accompanied Robredo at the DOJ. Prosecutors will resume hearing the complaint on Sept. 6. After the preliminary investigation, they will decide whether or not to file a case in court. (GMA News)

Duterte raises Hague ruling but China won't budge prEsIdENT Rodrigo Duterte did raise the arbitral ruling invalidating China’s expansive nine-dash line claim but China is not budging, informed diplomatic sources say. President Duterte and Chinese President Xi Jinping held bilateral talks yesterday at the State Guesthouse in Beijing but the source said the two also had a one-on-one meeting with some senior officials present. In the meeting described as friendly and cordial, the two exchanged views and talked just like old friends. It was during the meeting that the President brought up the Hague ruling. In response, Xi explained the Chinese position. China does not recognize the award and did not participate in the arbitration proceedings. In the end, the two leaders agreed to disagree. “The two agreed to disagree and move on to cooperation on oil and gas cooperation and the COC (code of conduct) negotiations,” the source said. Malacanang has said before that the time has come for the President to raise the ruling which favored the Philippines with Xi halfway into the Duterte administration. In 2016, upon assuming office, President Duterte had urged a “soft-landing approach” with regard to the arbitral award. In a statement, Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo said President Duterte was "steadfast in raising with President Xi concerns central to the Philippines' claim in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), which include the ruling held by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague. He said that the arbitral award is final, binding

and not subject to appeal." "In response, President Xi reiterated his government's position of not recognizing the arbitral ruling as well as not budging from its position," Panelo added. Panelo explained that Duterte and Xi agreed that "while their variant positions will have to remain, their differences however need not derail nor diminish the amity between the two countries." "They shared the view that the contentious issue is not the sum total of the Philippines-Chinese bilateral relationship. They likewise are on the same page on the belief that the foundation and future of their countries' friendship cannot be anchored to their respective positions on the subject, and that the basis of their ties is their centuries old friendship as well as the benefits that will redound to their peoples by virtue of their cooperation." Nevertheless, Panelo said both leaders agreed to work together "on the basis of mutual trust and good faith, to manage the South China Sea issue, and to continue to dialogue peacefully in resolving the conflict." They also agreed on the "importance of self-restraint and respect for freedom of navigation in - and overflight above - the South China Sea." COdE OF CONdUCT IN THE sOUTH CHINA sEA Duterte also mentioned the crafting of a Code of Conduct in the South China Sea, saying that the Code would "contribute in the resolution of numerous conflicts in the disputed areas of the South China Sea." Xi said the Code should be craft-

duterte and Xi ed within the remaining years of the Duterte administration. JOINT ExpLOrATION On the possible joint exploration in the West Philippine Sea, President Xi said a steering committee was created and has been taked to prepare a "substantive program on the matter." rECTO BANK INCIdENT Panelo said President Duterte took note of the fact that "the China side has recognized and confirmed the responsibility of the Chinese fishing crew." "He expressed appreciation of China's readiness to provide compensation to our fishermen who almost lost their lives. Both countries also exchanged agreements on cooperative measures and assistance in the key areas of education, science and technology and

economic development. Overall, the President said his eighth meeting with Xi “went very well,” according to Panelo. “The President’s activities on the second day of his official visit here in China are a reflection of continued good faith and warm friendship between the two presidents, and undoubtedly, a testament to the enhanced and enduring bond between the Philippines and China,” the Palace spokesman said. After Xi, Duterte will be holding talks with Premier Li Keqiang on Friday and Vice President Wang Qishan on Saturday. The President will also watch the opening ceremony of the 2019 FIBA World Cup and the game between the men’s national basketball team Gilas Pilipinas and Italy. Duterte will wrap up his fifth visit to China on Sunday. (GMA News)

Should I refinance my Modified loan?

Rates all time lows!

Caller: Hi Ken, I have a loan modification done about five years ago and now I am paying about 5% on my loan. I would like to take your advise and cash out some of my equity and do some home improvements. What is your suggestion and best advise. Ken Go: Based on what I saw on the loan modification package, you had a deferred balance that was released. Good for you, meaning you don’t owe it anymore and its forgiven. Therefore, you have built up your equity now to do a cash out loan, since the modification, your credit score has increase and you will be eligible for the NO Cost Refinancing loan. You have absolutely No Fees to refinance, nothing added to your loan balance either. Lets Do This! Caller: I had a foreclosure about 4 year and now all my credit is in good standing. I am self employed and have so far done well with my income. I have a lot of equity and currently paying a rate of 6%. I have been waiting for the 4 yr period to refinance my current mortgage into a conventional loan. Please advise. Ken Go: Great to hear that you were smart enough to let go a money pitt of an investments you made in the past. By letting the two properties go, you were able to save this one property that you live in and now is welcoming the benefits of its appreciation. Unfortunately, you have been misinformed. For conventional financing a foreclosure has to be clean of seven years before you would be able to get Fannie or Freddie loan. however, after crunching all the numbers, I believe you will still benefit by taking an FHA refinancing loan. You will have to pay PMI and an upfront MIP but the rates will be about .50% lower and we will pay for all the closing cost including reoccurring reserves. Your purpose of cashing out to pay off personal debts will be achieved and you r payments actually will not be much different from what you are paying total. I strongly suggest this FHA refinance now while rates are still fairly low. Caller: I own two properties and I am sort of having a hard time with my fix retirement income to keep afloat with my expenses and day to day activity. What should I do and how can I get some breathing room to enjoy my retirement. Ken Go: I am so glad you are very conservative with your finances. You did not borrow too much and you invested in

LGBT

Netizens were furious when a certain gay was not allowed to use the comfort room for female. Well, at least for a while. The one who posted it tried to appeal his case on the basis of humanitarian sympathy. He made it appear that he was discriminated, and that his status as LGBT was insulted. The affected person documented through video his predicament. And he posted it on Facebook for the world to see. It became a cause celebre and viral. He got the compassion he wished. Suddenly, the LGBT community were up in arms, alarmed at the “unfortunate” incident as their collective flair, in their estimation, was sent to the shredding machine. As if on cue, the janitress who caused the inconvenience of the homophile by not allowing him to take a leak at the female toilet was instantly dismissed from her employment. Politicians got into the picture too and obliged those affected to submit their own observation, recommendation and position. In no time, there was this fellow, plucked out from anonymity as he grabbed the limelight. Suddenly, a name emerged and the she-man becomes the new symbol of LGBT power. She became the icon of LGBT and a law, SOGIE or Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Equality Bill was introduced. A number of names of celebrities came out of the woodwork as if to celebrate the renaissance of the third sex. Accordingly, the LGBT has been there since time immemorial and that they even shaped civilization to what it is at present. Alexander the Great, Leonardo da Vinci, William Shakespeare, Michaelangelo, Oscar Wilde even Leonardo d’caprio, Elton John, Boy Abunda, Vice Ganda were presented to prove the point. But not for long. The netizens had been awakened from a deep slumber. They were disturbed, disgusted even, at the sudden flex of collective muscles by the gay sector.

a property that is generating income for you. However, the income is not really enough to cover all the expenses of the property let alone your extra needs. After reviewing both your properties, I strongly suggest you sell your rental property and take advantage of the equity to pay off your mortgage and some bills. That will free you up tremendously and give you extra money yearly to go home to vacation. You are renting your property to a relative that is paying about 40% less than when its worth. Your kind heart is hurting you very shallow pocket. You are what I call “Equity Rich” but “Cash Poor”. By selling your investment property and paying your existing loan balance and some revolving debts, you will have about $1500.00 of free money every month. Therefore, if you save up some months, that should be an easy once a year vacation to the Philippines. If you don’t sell, you don’t see and touch your investment gains. Caller: I just started a full time job two weeks ago and I would like to refinance my house to pay off some student loan debt of our children. I stopped working for about a year due to some medical issues and now is back doing what I have doing for the past ten years. I was told I needed two year consecutive employment

Memes came out indulging LGBT to a fist fight: “Hindi mo nga matanggap ang sarili mo, tapos pupwersahin mo pa taong bayan na tanggapin katauhan mo!” A snowball of response came from a number of netizens bashing the LGBT personality. The world of social media became abuzz with memes. “Nang magkaproblema mga magbubukid, tahimik ang pulitiko, pero bigla silang nabahala nung magkaproblema mga bakla!” “Hindi pa ako nakakita na gumamit ng panlalaking CR ang mga tomboy!” The LGBT bannered their position: “Equal rights for others does not mean less rights for you. It’s no pie.” But Senate President Vicente Sotto does not want to debate neither appreciate the merits of any legislative piece on the matter. He said “ Kung may sandata ka, pumasok ka sa panlalaking CR.” Senator Sotto is even championing the cause of the janitress who was dismissed from work, claiming that she merely stood her ground as it was her duty to maintain not only the cleanliness but integrity of the female lavatory. For the veteran legislator, the so-called sexual orientation bill is a dead fish already. While it is true that sexual orientation may be an issue which can be translated into science, medical or legal, philosophical and moral; and it can even be treated as a serious subject which could transcend religious dogmas and idiosyncrasies, the fact remains that as far as privacy is concerned, there is such a thing as a dichotomy in real life. That is to say, if you are a man whatever you think you intend to be, once biological requirements demand that you pee, use the male toilet. Same can be said of a woman. That is the plain and simple consideration. history. Please help me because my credit card debts and my children’s student loans killing me with very high interest rates. Ken Go: after our interview, I believe I can justify the big employment gap you had between your two jobs. Good things it’s the same line of work and you have a long history in this field. We can only cash out up to a loan to value of 80% minus your existing loan balance, after reviewing your file. That should be just right, you will not get any funds at closing but we will close with your new mortgage payment due in about 45days from closing. So, that will give you some room to adjust. You will start enjoying the lower payments soon and hopefully start saving more money for your retirement. Rates are as low again, take advantage of this rate to save on your monthly mortgage or to pay off debts. Thanks so much for your inquiries and comments, these times dictate for smart financial moves. MODIFYING DOWN CHILD AND SPOUSAL SUPPORT OBLIGATION AFTER A DIVORCE

Divorced parties are sometimes ordered to pay child support and spousal support in the divorce judgment. The support orders are generally based on the parties’ financial situation and custody arrangements at the time of the settlement or

trial. However, what if your income decreases after the divorce or what if your spouse’s income increases after the divorce due to a promotion or a better paying job? Do you have the right to modify your support obligation?

mind your finances… from page 10 How can you tell whether bankruptcy is appropriate for your situation? Generally speaking, the answer has to do with your ability to pay (or the lack thereof), your income, expenses, assets and the amount of your debt. You also need to look at the types of debt you have. For example, while most debts are dischargeable in bankruptcy, there are certain types of debts which are not. For example, student loans, back child support and most taxes can-not be wiped out in bankruptcy. Here are a few helpful questions to ask yourself to help assess whether bankruptcy may be a good idea: The answers to these questions will not con-clusively determine that you are a good candidate for bankruptcy but it is a good starting point. Here they are: (1) Are you struggling to pay even the minimum pay-ments on your credit cards and so end up paying late each time? (2) Have you started borrowing money just to be able to cover your basic living ex-penses such as rent or mortgage, food, gas, etc? (3) Have you lost track of how much you owe? (4) Are bill collectors calling you because you have ac-counts in collection? (5) Have creditors taken legal action against you (or are threatening to do so) such as filing a lawsuit, obtaining a judgment and threatening to garnish your wages or levy your bank account? If you said “yes” to any or most of the above, you could be in a “financial danger zone” and may need to take action as soon as possible before your financial problems get worse. It may be time to face your financial reality in-stead of simply hoping that somehow things will just magically change. The truth is that unlike other problems in life, debt problems usually don’t go away on their own- unless you take action. Perhaps you’ve been ig-noring your pile of bills and the collection calls. But you can only do this for so long. Sooner or later, you will need to face your creditors and the conse-quences of your inaction. Regardless of the cause of your present financial difficulties, what you need is a game plan to get out of debt before it cripples you. The past is no longer of any consequence unless you let it. And if you act quickly to turn things around, you will realize later that this decision often gives you more options in the long run. If you need some straight talk about bankruptcy and get all your ques-tions answered, I will give you a free initial consultation so we can talk about your situation. If your income has gone down substantially from the time that the child or spousal support determination, you may be able to file a modification of your support obligation. Losing a job or having less income constitutes a material change of circumstances that would allow the court to modify down your support obligations. Child support in California is based on guideline formula. One of the factors that is considered in the guideline formula is your gross income. Usually the court would look at several months or even an average of the last 12 months income. If your average income has decreased, you may be able to modify your child support to a lower amount. Bear in mind that there are other factors that come in the equation such as the amount of actual timeshare you spend with your child and the income of the other parent. If the other parent’s income has gone down, this may adversely affect your child support obligation. Spousal support may also be modified unless you stipulated in a divorce judgment that it is non modifiable. However, spousal support are usually calculated differently than guideline. The court will look at other factors in deciding whether to modify this. Those factors are listed in family code section 4320. If you are unemployed, the other party may be expected to try to impute income on you. However in light of the recent cases in California, they would have to prove that you had the ability and the opportunity to obtain employment. If your income has gone down or your spouse’s income has increased as a result of a new job, a promotion, or you got laid off or hours cut, it may be possible to mod-

ify both your child support and spousal support obligation. Without modifying the order, the current order will continue to be in effect and the same amount will accrue regardless of whether your income declined or your spouse income increased. It is important to file a post judgment request for order to modify support as soon as your financial situation changes. Amidst growing outrage, SC clarifies possible freedom of convicted rapist/murderer Antonio Sanchez

I

n a Supreme Court (SC) briefing on Friday, August 23, 2019, SC public information officer chief Atty. Brian Keith Hosaka clarifies that the "SC did not order the release of convicted rapist and murderer of ex-Caluan Mayor Antonio Sanchez, in its decision regarding the application of RA 10592. Apparently, the High Court ruled only on the retroactive applications of this law, RA 10592, which expanded the application of good conduct and time allowance for prisoners". Hosaka further stated that "in those cases, the primary issue was the legality of the implementing Rules and Regulations of RA 10592 which provided for the prospective application of the said law. He also stated that the policy to increase good conduct and allowance to qualified prisoners stemmed from RA 10592 and not the tribunal. And, the implementation of RA 10592 is not within the jurisdiction of the of the SC and that similar laws are to be implemented and executed by the executive branch of government. Nevertheless, Hosaka stressed that the judiciary merely interpreted the law and ruled that it can be applied retroactively." Initially, this particular law, RA 10592 if it was to be applied, meant "provisions will only cover cases from the time it was enacted in 2013. But in a ruling passed by Associate Justice Diosdado Peralta, it was stated that the ruling can be applied retroactively. However, on the same day of Friday, August 23, 2019, Malacañang also issued a statement saying "convicts serving sentences of a heinous crime, such as in the case of Sanchez are not eligible from early release from prison. The statement came after a review of RA 10592 by Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo, wherein it states that this is a "law on Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA), which amends the Revised Penal Code on the computation of the duration of imprisonment based on an offender's good conduct. Further, Panelo added that this is categorical as it excludes recidivists, habitual delinquents, escapees and persons charged with heinous crimes from the benefit of the coverage." In addition, Mr. Panelo also continued saying that "it is therefore the inevitable conclusion that all those convicted of heinous crimes, such as convicted rapists and murderer Antonio Sanchez would be ineligible and disqualified from availing of the benefits of GCTA." As a background on Sanchez' crimes, prior his conviction on the rape and murder of two University of the Philippines' Los Baños students Alan Gomez and Eileen Sarmenta, in 1995, he was sentenced to seven 'terms' of reclusion perpetua, along with his four henchmen who were also convicted of double murder in 1994, on the killing of father and son, Nelson and

Rickson Peñalosa, allies of his political opponent, Dr. Virvillo Velecina. The heinous crime on the students happened on June 29, 1993, as recounted by some of their Sarmenta and Gomez' fraternity and sorority batchmates, who learned of the gruesome murder and their story was related to their friends worldwide. When the two UP Los Baños Agriculture students Eileen Sarmenta and Alan Gomez were waiting inside a Tamaraw van outside of the Agrx complex in the campus, Sanchez' armed henchmen abducted Sarmenta to "offer her as a gift to their then boss, Mayor Sanchez" and they also took Gomez with them. According to court documents which was shown on CNN PhiIippines during the hearing, "the mayor's henchmen were in two separate vehicles; they all went to Erais Farm, in Barangay Curba, which was owned by Sanchez, and brought the gagged and tied Sarmenta and Gomez inside Sanchez's resthouse. Upon arrival, Eileen was sent straight to the then mayor's room while her boyfriend Alan was beaten up by Luis Corcolon, Rogelio ' Boy' Corcolon, Zoilo Ama and George Medialdea and was subsequently thrown out of the resthouse. While he was on the ground, Pepito Kawit struck Alan's diaphragm with the back of his Armalite rifle." Apparently, the following day, around noon, "a crying and disheveled Eileen, who was half naked without her shorts, was dragged out of the resthouse, and the mayor appeared, clad merely in a white shirt, and spoke to Luis and Medialdea, thanking them "for their 'gift,' and continued saying: 'tapos na ako, inyo na 'yan, bahala na kayo diyan,' (I'm done with her, she's all yours), as he was quoted in the document." Finally, both Eileen and Alan were "loaded in the van, while some of the mayor's men were trailing behind in an ambulance. The two henchmen, Centeno and Kawit dragged the blood-drenched Alan from the van to the street and Kawit killed him with a

single gunshot from his Armalite rifle leaving him behind, after which all of them brought Eileen to a sugarcane field in Sitio Paputok, Kilometro 74 of Barangay Mabacap in Calauan town and it was there when Luis announced that it was time for the group to 'feast on her' and his exact words read on the document was: 'turbohin na rin natin ang tinurbo ni Boss.' While Eileen was laying at the back of the van, her mouth covered with a handkerchief, hands and legs tied, the group: Medialdea, Luis, Boy, Ama, Brion and Kawit waited for their turn to gang rape the 21-year old woman; Kawit also invited Aurelio Centeno, but he refused as he couldn't 'bear the bestiality they were doing’ on Eileen." Court documents also revealed that "after the gang rape, Eileen knelt and begged for her life, but Luis forced his Armalite in her mouth and fired, thus quickly killing her. Centeno was ordered to get rid of her body and all eight (8) of them boarded the ambulance, leaving Eileen's body in the van, which was discovered by townspeople the following day." It took authorities "over a month to

tag then Mayor Sanchez and his men in the rape and murder. They attempted to put the blame on Kit Alqueza, the son of a general. However, Aurelio Centeno eventually became a star witness during the trial. There were a number of separate investigations by various law enforcement agencies and prosecutors pursued charges against Sanchez and his men, but did not include Teofilo 'Kit' Alqueza, son of Gen. Dictador Alqueza, whom Sanchez claimed was the mastermind. On March 14, 1995, the judge concluded the 16-month "Sarmenta-Gomez murder trial with the finding that then Calauan Mayor Antonio Sanchez and several of his henchmen (some of whom were policemen) were guilty of raping and killing Sarmenta and killing her boyfriend Alan as well. Sanchez was given a double life term by the Supreme Court and he will have to spend a total of 360 years in jail. Sanchez is currently serving (7) seven terms of reclusion perpetua (40 years per term) for the crime." However, despite all of Sanchez's convictions, he may soon walk free, as he might be one of the 11,000 inmates who could benefit from the current RA 10592 law that reduces the sentence of those who have shown good behavior. Per court documents, Sanchez has "already served 26 years in prison since 1993 and the Bureau of Corrections said that the ex-mayor has in fact already served 49 years - exceeding the maximum time of 40 years, along with the computation on his good conduct time allowed." Under the RA 10592 which was enacted on May. 2014, the Supreme Court ruled in July, that the GCTA (good conduct) "increases Sanchez' chance given to inmates, shall be applied retroactively." But according to Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra, "Sanchez' evaluation may start next month, though there are questions if he is eligible to avail

The six-core 9th Gen Intel® framed by super-narrow bezels. Gaming laptops are usually bulky, big, and heavy but the GX531, being the thinnest and slimmest gaming laptop yet, is easy to carry around and has top of the line processor – an i7-9th generation, combined with the GeForce RTXTM 2080 GPU. What you can immediately see with GX531 is the super-narrow bezels that draws you deeper into the action on the 240Hz IPS-level display. We usually encounter screen tearing on a display below 240Hz, especially when we run graphics at 30fps. But with this laptop, visuals still run smooth regardless of resolution. MB Tech The blazing fast refresh rate makes gameplay incredibly smooth with minimal input lag, while the 3ms gray-to-gray response time produces sharper visuals with no blurring. ROG Zephyrus S puts audio at the foreplay, no lags and tears. It’s very enjoyable

front with dual speakers aimed right at you. The resulting output is louder, with more bass and range that help you hear every sound. This is perfectly awesome especially when you’re playing PUBG or other online multiplayer battle royale games on this laptop. What we also like the most of this series is the cooling system and its customizable keyboard. The GX531 automatically adjusts fan speeds based on CPU and GPU temperatures, and you can quickly toggle between three modes with a convenient function shortcut. With upgraded 12v fans and anti-dust tunnels, the cooling system on the Zephyrus S is prepared to tackle the latest games with ease. The AURA SYNC keyboard ensures precise input in the heat of battle with n-key rollover and up to 20 million keypress durability. You can customize the backlight colors and effects to suit your

style, and another configurable RGB zone illuminates the AAS intake at the back for ambient lighting. ROG-exclusive Active Aerodynamic System (AAS) includes several enhancements to make the cooler more effective, improving internal airflow and allowing the fan to spin slower and quieter while maintaining low temperatures. ASUS did some adjustment on the shape of the intake to reduce noise levels further and make the acoustic profile less obtrusive. Zephyrus runs cool enough to avoid throttling and quiet enough to enjoy your

game. The most important aspect of the AAS compensates for the slim chassis by making it thicker. Inspired by automotive sunroofs, ASUS engineers devised a hinge that lifts the laptop on its flexible bottom panel, opening a 6-mm gap that helps the fans breathe deeper. Try it yourself and open the lid and you’ll feel smooth mechanical motion and see the ground-effect red glow light up the little teeth on Zephyrus’ lower lip. With the AAS, exhaust is pumped out vents in the edges of the body, and the tilted frame helps separate the layer of cool air getting sucked in from the bottom from the layer of hot air being blown out above. The vents also incorporate a slight ramp to further direct warm exhaust away from cooler intake air. These changes reduce the temperature of air entering the fans by about 10°C compared to conventional laptops. With its price value, this is more a laptop for hardcore gamers who can deeply appreciate the importance of great specs rather than for beginners, especially if you don’t intend to do gaming for a long-term. Honestly, with its price, you can already build a desktop with the same specs’ half the price, but you wouldn’t carry around your desktop, right? Honestly, this is way too pricey for a gaming laptop, but if it’s worth your convenience, then it could be a worthy investment for someone who’s always on the go. With the price shock in mind, we’ll give the Zephyrus S GX531 an impressive 4 ½ stars. All specs and features make this series a beast inside and outside its shell, but we can’t say that it’s practical to invest if you’re not into hardcore gaming. If you are, then Zephyrus S GX531 will be your formidable ally on your ultra-gaming adventure.

Instagram/The Araneta Coliseum, screenshots MANILA, Philippines — Kapamilya actress Julia Barretto’s mother, Marjorie Barretto, has clarified that the identical jersey numbers of Julia and Gerald Anderson at the recent Star Magic All-Star game was just a coincidence. Marjorie posted on her Instagram account a video of her kissing Julia on the forehead after her daughter’s volleyball game against Kim Chiu’s team. “Good game Juls! Congratulations #TeamKimChiu What a heart stopping game!” she captioned the post. But in the comment section, an Instagram user commented that Julia sported the same number as Gerald. “NUMBER 3 rin si @andersonger-

ald <3,” the user commented. Marjorie clarified that Julia wears jersey number 3 since her high school volleyball varsity days. “Let me correct this before the story gets big and out of hand again. Number 3 has always been Julia's jersey number since her high school volleyball varsity days. No special meaning. <3,” Marjorie replied to the Instagram user. In his past interviews, Gerald, who plays for the Imus Bandera in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Lakan Cup, explained that he chose the number 3 because of his idol – NBA Hall of Famer Allen Iverson. ctress Julia Barretto admitted feeling terrified in front of a big crowd at the Star Magic All-Star Games 2019 last Sunday, August 25. In an Instagram post on Tuesday, Barretto, who was team captain for the Blue volleyball team, made the admission amid the raging controversy involving her and fellow Star Magic artists Gerald Anderson and Bea Alonzo "Two months ago, I started training and going back to my first love: volleyball. I fell in love with this sport back in high school, where I got the opportunity to be part of the varsity team and compete," she opened. "Last Sunday was my first time to play in Araneta. I used to just be an audience member and watch the UAAP volleyball games. At the time, I only wished I had been able to experience something that exciting! "I was terrified of being in court, being infront of thousands of people again. A few moments before the game, Coach O (Oliver Almadro) said, 'Be brave. Being brave is not showing that you can fight back, being brave is showing what you can do.' And we did it. To my girls, my blue team: thank you for your determination and hard work. We may not have won the game, yet it was so fulfilling. Knowing that we fought, we fought hard till the end. To the red team, headed by (Kim Chiu): Congratulations! It wasn’t an easy match, but you guys gave us a game to remember. Thank you, till the next!" she wrote. In a previous interview with ABS-CBN News, Barretto stressed that she didn't steal anyone's boyfriend. (ABS-CBN News)

Ria Atayde’s unknown big heart I

t is no secret that Ria Atayde is a young actress who continuously proves her mettle with powerful portrayals, an effective endorser carrying brands of diffe¬rent nature, a supportive sister and a dutiful daughter to both award-winning actors Arjo Atayde and Sylvia Sanchez — an over-all role model to young Filipinos. But what many people may not know is that behind the camera and beyond social media, the entertainment industry’s newest darling is just as admirable. Not too long ago candid photos of Atayde serving food to children during an outreach surfaced online, but not on her social media accounts. Atayde, seemingly unaware that happy citizens were taking evidence of her goodwill, was described as joining the feeding program of Jus-

tice Muñoz Palma High School in Molave Street, Payatas B, Quezon City. Details of the online posts were not complete so reporters had to reach out to confirm that she was indeed part of the program which turned out to be sponsored by Corazon Foundation and Willing Hearts. “Ay hala! Don’t really want to make that a public thing!” Atayde answered in surprise. The humility was expected as along with the photos of her helping out were accounts of other netizens who spotted the young Atayde as early as 2009 extending her helping hand to victims of Typhoon Ondoy, proving that she is not the type to trumpet her good deeds. Corazon Foundation, as it turned out, has been feeding 300 to 1,000 public school students in cooperation with local government units and the outreach program wherein Atayde was recently spotted was

actually the launching partnership of the foundation with the Singapore-based Willing Hearts. Atayde was chosen as the face of the latter foundation. “Launching yun, nung nandun si Ria, August 9. Nagtayo ng kusina para lang sa project na yan. The plan is to feed at least 20,000 students all over Manila and also do medical assistance to sick children. Ang mga Singaporean ang nag-tap kay Ria dahil nakita nila na mahilig siyang tumulong. Every birthday niya or Christmas may pinapakain siyang mga bata,” explained the foundation’s insider who refused to be named. Willing Hearts further did research on Atayde before signing her up and saw more photos of her visiting child institutions on her own will. With this new capacity, it can be expected that Atayde will further her role beyond the spotlight. (TMT)

The BuCor fully and publicly render a full account of Sanchez' whereabouts given the information and photos circulating online, showing that he is already in Calauan or that he was able to celebrate his birthday with his family without proper leave of court; 2). Antonio Sanchez be strippped off all special priveleges being accorded to him inside the New Bilibid Prison; 3). Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of our Sis Eileen and Brod Alan during these difficult times when wounds are being reopened. Authentic Greek Food is Deliciously Democratic If you’ve been turned away at the most coveted restaurant in Baguio, here’s a tip.

itchen confidential: A big part of what makes a restaurant not only successful but confers upon it some kind of mythical status, is not being able to get a table there.

Mythic is, therefore, the term I am bestowing on Lemon and Olives, the Greek restaurant that opened on Baguio’s Outlook Drive in 2016, which has been fully booked—if not overbooked—almost as soon as it was launched (four days after, to be exact). Safe to say that the waiting list is now three years long. Well, I’ve got some not-so-confidential good Greek Salad news: There’s no need to resort to bribing the waiter, pretending you’re a Senator of the Republic, or setting up a picnic blanket on the ravine just to sample a Lemon and Olives meal. There’s an alternative! If you’ve driven five hours up to Baguio only to be turned away at the reception of Lemon and Olives, just take a turn to Naguillan Road, zig zag down an hour or so toward MacArthur Highway, until you find yourself on the beach of San Juan, La Union. Look for Gefseis Greek Grill, a white stucco restaurant with blue paint accents, stylized like it was transplanted brick by brick from Santorini. Yes. It’s the same menu and the same owner and the same chef: Takis Polychronis. You’re welcome. As luck would have it, I have been surfing with Takis’s partner, Helen Jucar, in La Union for quite some time without ever knowing of her connection to Lemon and Olives. Helen is a local legend, a surf instructor, a certified lifeguard, and one of the few true wahines of Surftown La Union, where she is affectionately nicknamed the Black Mamba. Imagine my delight as I sat down with Takis and Helen for a little conversation on authentic Greek food. After all, the buzz about Lemon and Olives is that it is the only authentic Greek restaurant in these known parts, and that includes Manila. And by authentic, I meant owned, operated, and cooked by a Greek chef. But that’s just the beginning. Helen was emphatic about the authenticity of the ingredients. “There are some

Such a simple meal— just meat and potatoes and tomatoes, really—but such depth in it. And it echoed the words Takis had told me earlier. Greek food is for everyone and it’s good for you. Curtains Vs. Blinds: Which Is Better?

W

Other cost-saving ways are to use substitutes. Instead of natural silk, you can go for faux silk curtains to get that high-end, European style. Alternatively, ready-made curtains that can be bought off the shelf are much more affordable, but they risk becoming ill-fitting on your windows. In terms of blinds, materials like vinyl tend to be more affordable than aluminium, wood or textured blinds. Our Verdict: Curtains Cost-wise, curtains in general are usually much more affordable, but of course, depending on the type of material you’re buying.

3. Maintenance hich side are you on? If you prefer a more hassle-free way of maintenance, curtains may be a better idea than blinds. CleanOne of the most underrated areas in a renovation, ing curtains is less time-consuming. Depending on the type of fabric, you can easily restore its lustre by most of us don’t think much about how we should washing it in the machine or dry cleaning it. Venetian and vertical blinds accumulate dust on the slats easily so you need to clean each slat mandress our bare windows. And we should - more than just decoration, window coverings are essential to keeping ually. But, roller blinds are more convenient to maintain with less demanding cleaning regimes – spot clean, dry clean or hand-wash. pesky sunlight, sounds and (eyes) from invading your home. In terms of durability however, blinds may be a hardier choice. Curtains, like all fabrics, may fade over For most, it boils down to these two - curtains or blinds. But which is best for your home? Fret not; based on your decor style, budget and needs, our quick guide below will help you decide once and for all - are curtains (or blinds) better?

1. Interior Style

Not all curtains or blinds are made the same - it depends on the mood/interior style you’re going for. Curtains by default are easily suited to a wider range of styles, as it comes available in a variety of thicknesses, patterns and colours. For instance, light, sheer curtains are great for exuding a light, airy mood in a minimalist or Scandinavian interior. Meanwhile, heavier, richer curtain fabrics in materials like velvet are a better fit for cosy, contemporary styles. However, blinds are now seeing a revival; more local homes are incorporating this accent in styles like industrial and Scandinavian, for it’s clean-cut looks which help imbue a sense of structure to the space. Pure white blinds exude a sort of classic colonial beauty, whilst wooden Venetian blinds are great for portraying that ‘hotel’ suite look in a home. Our Verdict: Curtains The bigger variety of materials, finishes and colours allow it to suit a wide range (if not all) types of interiors.

2. Cost Effectiveness

If cost is more of an issue, here’s a rule of thumb - curtains in general are always cheaper than blinds. Why? It’s all in its form; in general, soft fabrics are always cheaper than harder blinds made of wood or plastic. Also, more work is needed to construct a blind, which may account for the raised prices. Of course, prices may differ based on the type of textures or materials; a velvet/suede curtain can still be more costlier than a wooden blind.

A

time, due to sunlight exposure and frequent washing. Our Verdict: Curtains and Roller Blinds If you’d like to save the trouble for manual cleaning, fabric curtains are definitely easier to maintain. But durability wise, blinds are more long-lasting, as curtain fabrics may be susceptible to fading.

4. Light Control

Let’s not forget the main point about having a window covering - blocking out light. Once again, curtains come up tops in terms of light coverage, especially thick, blackout curtains made of heavier materials like brocade or suede. While curtains may be great at keeping light at bay, they unfortunately don’t do much for controlling the amount of light filtering through. Blinds provide more of that control; wind up for total sunlight, or adjust the slats accordingly to let your desired amount of sunlight in. Our Verdict: It Depends It depends on your preferences. For light coverage, go for curtains. For light control, go for blinds.

5. Sound Control

In terms of sound control, curtains are also better than blinds. Similar concept - gaps in between the blinds unfortunately allow sound to pass through easily. Not only that, on windy days, blinds hitting the windowsills can make a racket as well. Heavyweight curtains are the most ideal for blocking noise, especially if your home faces the road or corridor. Thicker, denser fabrics help to prevent noise from penetrating through the room. Our Verdict: Curtains The higher density and flexibility of softer curtains help to dampen sound waves passing through. Also, blinds may be at an disadvantage, as they can make quite a racket on windy days. (qanvast.com)

8 Ways To Keep Your Succulents Alive 6. Succulents need food, too

re you one of those people who hangs their head in shame whenever we tout succulents as the easiest plants to grow? You’re not alone, trust us. Succulents, plants adapted to survive in harsh environments and long periods with very little water, play by their own rule book, but they’re still pretty easy to care for. Follow these succulent-growing tips to help you keep your babies alive and thriving.

Succulents do often grow in low-nutrient environments, but fertilizer is still essential to their care. Pro-tip: for succulents, once-yearly feeding is enough. Use any well-balanced organic fertilizer, cut the dose in half, and feed at the beginning of the plant’s growing season for best results.

1. Give them breathing room

7. Rethink propagation

While there are a few succulent types that do well indoors (including aloe and kalanchoe), the vast majority of these plants hail from warm, arid climates and depend on good air circulation to breathe. So while that succulent terrarium looks adorable, forget about it. You’ll have way more luck keeping your plants outdoors, exposed to the elements.

2. Provide some shade

Despite widespread belief, most succulents do not thrive if blasted with the hottest temps and the fullest sun exposure. While they appreciate a lot of light (and very few survive in full shade), most succulents need sun protection, especially if the temperature hits the 90-degree-mark, or if they’re small. Varieties that are solid green, pale, or variegated are most in danger of sun burn. Here’s a tip: if you are planning to blast your succulents with the brightest sun possible, opt for plants that are red, gray, blue, or covered densely with spines (which help to reflect the sun’s rays).

3. Start with the right soil

Use a fast-draining cactus mix. Or, if you’re of the DIY persuasion, amend a traditional potting soil with coarse perlite, crushed lava, or pumice. A good recipe is one part amendment and four parts potting mix.

4. Low-water isn’t no-water

Perhaps you’ve killed your succulents by overwatering them (far more common than under-watering) which causes rot. But maybe you’ve already gotten the memo, are diligently dehydrating

Sunset Magazine your plants, and wonder why they are dying. Well, newsflash-they need some water. Succulents like it when soil approaches dry before being watered. But what does this mean, you ask? It means you’ll likely be a-ok if, during dry times, if you water small pots about once a week and large pots about every two weeks.

5. Include drainage

Remember-succulent roots hate excess water. Be sure there’s drainage in your container. Ok, ok-you’ve caught me in a lie. We sometimes create pretty centerpieces in pots with no drainage. But listen-you’ve got to water these compositions especially lightly. And you have to follow all of the other rules.

While you might be accustomed to plucking a stem of your favorite geranium, rosemary bush, or houseplant and dunking it in water to watch roots grow, that won’t work for propagating succulents. You can actually practice the exact opposite method. When you’ve got a plant you like, pluck a stem and let it dry out in the shade for at least 3 days. This process, known as healing, helps form a callus, preventing rot. Place your new stem in the soil mix mentioned above, and you should be good to go.

8. Beware of frost

While some succulents, including certain types of Sedum and Sempervivum, can withstand freezing temps, most cannot. Take care when a cold snap is in the forecast—since succulents are mostly water, their cell walls are prone to bursting, which turns the leaves to mush. When in doubt, assume that any drop below freezing will call damage or death to your plant. The easiest solution for frost protection is to keep plants in containers that are light enough to move indoors or under awnings when a cold snap is predicted. Also, unlike the rest of your garden, succulents actually have a greater chance of survival if they’re dry before a cold snap, not wet. (Johanna Silver/sunset.com)

How whitening strips can damage your teeth By Maria Cohut Fact checked by Paula Field Molecular Biology in Orlando, FL.

Bleach attacks sensitive tooth layer

UrduPoint.com

T

eeth are an important part of physical appearance for many people, and they want to show a bright white smile. However, a new study reveals that many tooth whitening products can damage the teeth. New research reveals why we should treat tooth whitening products with caution. Studies have shown that most human teeth are not naturally pearl-white. In reality, most teeth are different shades and hues that tend towards yellow. Nor are teeth uniformly colored. Despite this, there is an idea — which is especially prominent in North American societies — that perfectly white teeth are a symbol of beauty and self-care. For this reason, many people opt to

whiten their teeth, either on their own or with the help of a cosmetic dentist. Statistic reports indicate that about 40.5 million people in the United States used tooth whitening products in 2018. Various studies now show that whitening teeth with bleaching products that contain hydrogen peroxide can endanger tooth health. Researchers from Stockton University in Galloway, NJ, aimed to find out exactly how hydrogen peroxide harms the teeth, and which part of a tooth it attacks. The research — which was led by Kelly Keenan, an associate professor of chemistry at Stockton University — will feature at the Experimental Biology 2019 meeting, which is part of the annual meeting of the American Society for Biochemistry and

actually adopted a default plan where you have designated your daughter or son to take care of you. Now, the question is: Have they agreed to this?

That’s a long time to live without retirement money. You need money to pay for your necessary expenses – food, shelter, clothing; and, some expense that become necessary over time – health care (medicines), custodial (caregiver). You also need money for your discretionary expenses – casinos, vacations, iPhone, Gucci, Coach. And, what about that which you will pass on to your children and grandchildren? You need money to maintain your freedom, independence and dignity. Otherwise, you will be a burden – to your spouse, to your children, or to society. You do not want this to happen. Not, if you can help it. Work thru retirement. Either full time or part time, your income will help augment your retirement needs. Postpone taking your Social Security pensions, up to age 70, if possible. The increment you will earn by postponement will be useful to take care of inflationary pressures on your retirement money. Furthermore, postponement may impact your spouse’s and/or children’s benefits. Consider tax diversification as you decide conversion of your 401k and/or IRA to Roth. Remember, RMD (Required Minimum Distribution) at age 70 ½? Review your expenses. A fellow tried, and realized that he was spending $1,000 a month for his Starbucks habit. He subsequently purchased a Keurig and a supply of his favorite Starbucks K-cup pods from Costco and enjoyed cups after cups of brewed coffee at home with substantial savings! Make a permanent life insurance an essential part of your strategies to save for retirement. This type of a policy defers taxes as your accumulated cash value grows. You can potentially access that cash value using income tax- free policy loans and withdrawals, to use for retirement income to pay for your long term care services needs. If you own equity in your home, unleash such potential to provide you income in retirement. You may secure a loan, establish a line of credit, lump sum, or installment payments thru reverse mortgage. Reverse mortgage terms have substantially improved recently. You can use the proceeds of your loan in whatever way you want, not pay any monthly mortgage payment, and live in your own home for the rest of your life! Isn’t that cool? ne in 7 men and one in 4 women are expected to live to age 95. That one could be YOU!

Specifically, the researchers looked at how whitening strips, which people can buy over-the-counter, damage one of the teeth’s three layers. Dental whitening strips typically contain hydrogen peroxide as the main active ingredient. This substance is an oxidizing agent that some people use a sterilizer, although more people may know it as a color-lightening agent. This is also the main substance that people use to bleach hair. If a person overuses or uses too much of this substance to lighten hair color, it can cause “significant damage” to the hair and scalp. Now, Keenan and team have discovered how hydrogen peroxide damages dentin, the “middle” layer of teeth. A tooth contains three different layers: a shiny enamel external one, a dentin layer in the middle, and an inner layer that is mainly connective tissue, which helps keep the tooth safely in place. Hydrogen peroxide, Keenan explains,

can pierce through the enamel and infiltrate dentin, which contains about 90–95 percent of the protein collagen. In this study, “We sought to further characterize what the hydrogen peroxide was doing to collagen,” notes Keenan. “We used entire teeth for the studies and focused on the impact hydrogen peroxide has on the proteins,” the researcher adds. Keenan and team found that the collagen present in dentin becomes fragmented when exposed to hydrogen peroxide, which leads to the loss of collagen mass in that layer. “Our results showed that treatment with hydrogen peroxide concentrations similar to those found in whitening strips is enough to make the original collagen protein disappear, which is presumably due to the formation of many smaller fragments.” The team is not yet sure whether this damage is permanent or if there is any way of reversing it. In the future, the researchers also plan to find out whether hydrogen peroxide affects not just collagen, but also other proteins that dentin contains.

High-protein vegan foods

P

By Danielle Dresden Reviewed by Katherine Marengo LDN, RD

roponents of vegan and vegetarian diets often promote them on the basis of their potential health benefits, but, in the past, dieticians worried that these diets might not adequately meet people’s nutritional needs. Protein is typically the nutrient that people are most concerned about when they consider adopting a plant based diet, although studies have found that a haphazard approach to eating vegan foods can also lead to a lack of other nutrients. Vegans do not eat red meat, poultry, seafood, dairy, eggs, honey, or any food containing these or other animal products. Currently, approximately 2% of the population in the United States describe themselves as vegans.

Why vegans need to focus on protein

People who only eat vegan foods and consume no animal products do not have the direct access to complete dietary proteins that other people have. As a result, vegans need to pay attention to their diet to ensure that it contains enough protein. It is difficult to overestimate the importance of protein in the diet. Protein is one of the basic building blocks of the human body. It is present in cells throughout the body and plays a part in most key bodily functions. Its roles include maintaining muscle and bones, supporting the immune system, and transporting oxygen in the blood. According to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for protein is 56 grams (g) for adult males and 46 g for adult females. However, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding have an RDA of 71 g of protein. Another way of looking at protein needs is to consider the advice of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, who state that each day, people need to eat 0.4 g of protein per pound of body weight. They add that vegans may benefit from eating 0.5 g of protein per pound of body weight because plant proteins are slightly less digestible.

The body needs vitamin B-12 to make red blood cells and keep the neurological system functioning properly. This vitamin is also essential for healthy neurological development in infants. The RDA for vitamin B-12 is 2.4 micrograms (mcg) a day for men and women aged 14 years and older. For pregnant women, the RDA is 2.6 mcg, and for women who are breastfeeding, the RDA is 2.8 mcg. However, vitamin B-12 only occurs naturally in foods from animal sources, such as clams, liver, and dairy products. People who eat only vegan foods have two options to ensure that they consume enough of this vital nutrient. They can either eat foods that manufacturers have fortified with vitamin B-12 or take a vitamin B-12 dietary supplement. Packaged breakfast cereals, nutritional yeast, soy milk, and some meat substitutes often have added vitamin B-12. The amount of vitamin B-12 in each serving can vary between products, so it is important to check the nutritional data on food labels. Vitamin D helps keep bones healthy and strong, supports the immune and neuromuscular systems, and reduces inflammation. People sometimes refer to it as the “sunshine vitamin” because the body produces it in response to exposure to the sun.

List of high-protein vegan foods

Experts used to encourage people following a vegetarian or vegan diet to eat different plant-based proteins at the same time to get enough complete proteins in their diet, but they no longer consider this practice essential. The current thinking is that people can obtain the full range of amino acids that they need over the course of a day and that they do not need to balance the amino acids in every meal. The following vegan foods are good sources of protein: tempeh, tofu, soy milk, soy burger, lentils, wheat gluten, pumpkin seeds, quinoa, black beans, pinto beans, red kidney beans, black-eyed peas, chickpeas, green peas, peanut butter, almonds, almond butter, wholewheat bread, pasta, bulgur, brown rice, spinach, broccoli, mushrooms, artichoke, oatmeal, edamame, asparagus.

Foods with vitamins B-12 and D

Mushrooms are a vegan source of vitamin D. Protein may get most of the attention when it comes to making sure that vegans eat a balanced diet, but there are other nutrients that it is important to monitor as well.

Eating Well As with vitamin B-12, vitamin D is primarily present in foods from animal sources, although mushrooms do contain variable amounts. The RDA for vitamin D is 600 International Units (IU), or 15 mcg, for people aged 1–70 years and 800 IU, or 20 mcg, for people over 70 years old. Fortified foods are the primary source of vitamin D for most people in the U.S., whether they eat food from animal sources or not. For people who eat only vegan foods, fortified foods, which include some cereals and grains, are very important. Dietary supplements can also help vegans get an adequate amount of vitamin D. ‘Asia’s Latin City’: 5 ways to rediscover Zamboanga City ZAMBOANGA CITY — Dubbed as “Asia’s Latin City” and the “city of flowers,” Zamboanga City is the third largest city in the Philippines by land area. As such, it has a lot to offer tourists, including rich heritage and tourist spots. Although marred by controversies in the past, including the Zamboanga siege last 2013, the city is now peaceful, thanks to increased police and military visibility.

The Philippines’ only pink beach Recognized by National Geographic Channel as one of the world’s top 21 best beaches, the inhabited Great Santa Cruz Island in Zamboanga City has been known for its pink sand beach, believed to be the only one in the country and in Asia. The beach owes its color to mixed pulverized red organ pipe coral and white sand.

Yakans are inhabitants of Basilan and have been considered as among the best weavers in the Philippines because of the tribe’s unique geometric design. A meter of cloth takes them five to six days to finish. The cloth may be expensive, but the quality makes it worthwhile. Great Santa Cruz Island

The beach is said to be popular among tourists from as far as Europe since the 1980s.

Pasonanca Park

Located in Barangay Pasonanca, the park is one of the most visited places in Zamboanga City. Here, tourists can enjoy different attractions, including the Pasonanca Park Swimming Pools, La Jardin de Maria Clara Lobregat, and the Butterfly Park. Also located inside the park is the Pasonanca Tree House, which you can rent for free. Camp Limbaga, named after the Antonio Limbaga, the only Zamboangeno boy scout delegate to the 11th World Scout Jamboree in Greece, which unfortunately crashed in Mumbai on their way to Greece, is also located inside the park. In the camp, there are 24 tents named after the 24 boy scouts and scout masters who perished in the tragedy.

Barter Trade

Barter Trade is in Barangay Canelar and is a place to buy souvenir items such sarong, batik, biscuits, chocolates, sotanghon and a thousand others, featuring Malaysian and Indonesian products at very affordable prices. Zamboanga’s tourists do not usually leave the city without going to this market.

Sardines capital of the Philippines

Zamboanga is home to different canned sardines manufacturers in the Philippines.

Yakan Village

Located seven kilometers from the city center, the Yakan Village is a place where you can see live weaving and a place to buy hand-woven fabric such as malongs, scarves, purses and earrings, among others.

One of them is Mega Global, manufacturer of Mega Sardines, with its 12-hour catching-to-canning process of sardines. The process begins at sun down, with the company’s sonar boats looking for schools of fish. Once detected, a green light is used to attract the fish. Then, the catcher boat comes and lowers its nets, circling these around the schools of fish.

The net is then pulled back up to the surface for loading. The company reportedly uses a fish pump technology that allows it to shorten the loading period from one hour to just two minutes. This is an important innovation, as the quicker loading times ensure that the fish is fresher and histamine levels are kept to a minimum, resulting in better taste. This also extends the shelf life of the fish from just two days to seven days. No human hands are laid on the fish, further lowering the risk of contamination. Upon arrival at the fish port, the catch is mechanically unloaded using a vacuum pump to tanks in the holding dock. Then, the catch is transported to Mega Global’s canning plant. The preparation of the sardines is automated and employs technology for efficient processing. The company produces up to two million cans of sardines daily. (Philstar.com)

Tripartite agreement for hosting of 30th SEA Games signed

Sunstar

MANILA -- The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) and Philippine SEA Games Organizational Committee Foundation, Inc. (Phisgoc) on Wednesday signed a tripartite agreement to assure hassle-free and successful hosting of the 30th Southeast Asian Games from November 30 to December 11 this year. The formal signing of the tripartite deal at the PSC conference room was set after the POC executive council granted newly-elected POC president Abraham Tolentino go-signal to enter into the agreement. Abraham and chairman Steve Hontiveros signed the tripartite agreement in behalf of the POC while chairman William ‘Butch’

Ramirez for the PSC and chief executive officer Ramon Suzara for Phisgoc. “This is historic day for us and we should move forward in the coming days since we barely have four months to go before the first day of the SEA Games,” Suzara said. Ramirez, also chef de mission (CDM) of the Team Philippines, commended the POC for settling their differences and set their fo-

FIBA World Cup: Huge sigh of relief for Ravena after suspension ends MANILA, Philippines—Eight seconds was all it took for Kiefer Ravena to once again feel comfortable inside the basketball court. After an 18-month suspension following a positive test for banned substances, Ravena was finally back on the court, back to playing competitive basketball. He had been practicing with Gilas Pilipinas since June, but had to settle for participating in scrimmages. He could only sit and observe during the national team’s tune-up games in Spain, and against the Adelaide 36ers last Friday. The countdown to his return reached zero on Saturday, August 24, and he officially returned to the court in Gilas’ second tune-up against the 36ers. Ravena did not start, entering instead at the 3:15 mark of the first quarter. It wasn’t until the second period, however, that Ravena made his mark. A poor inbound by the 36ers allowed Ravena to poach the ball off Kevin White, and he soared to the bucket for a lay-up just eight seconds into the second quarter. It was his first official field goal since being suspended on May 22, 2018. “Ewan ko kung binigay sa akin ‘yung steal na ‘yun, pina-lay-up ako nu’ng isa. Sabi niya, ‘Ang tagal na-suspend ‘to, pa-lay-upin natin,’” Ravena joked. That lay-up was all Ravena needed. He hit a 3-pointer in Gilas’ next possession, then crossed over a taller defender before splashing a mid-range jumper next. In the fourth quarter, he drove to the hoop, faked a pass, then scooped in a lay-up to add to his highlight reel. “Parang doon, ‘yun ‘yung parang medyo OK na,” Ravena said. “Doon ko na natapos ‘yung kung ano man ‘yung nararamdaman kong gigil, ‘yung pagiging kalma ko, andoon na lahat ‘yun.” Asked to describe how he felt upon making his return, Ravena heaved out a big sigh. “Ayun,” he said. “ ‘Yun talaga.” “Parang pagtapak ko pa lang nu’ng umpisa, ‘yun talaga ‘yung naramdaman ko, noong pinasok ako. Kasi alam mo ‘yun, di na kailangan mag-

tago, di na kailangan mag-isip na bawal ito, bawal ganyan,” he added. “I’m just playing to play the sport that I love, and just representing my country to the highest and best of my abilities.” Ravena gave his performance a 6 or a 7, docking points because of their 85-75 loss to the 36ers. He finished with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting, along with 2 rebounds in just over 17 minutes of playing time. He did have 3 turnovers, and failed to register a single assist. “Marami pang kulang,” Ravena said of his performance. “Hopefully, I can catch up.” “Sayang, talo,” he also said. “Pero a lot of lessons learned all throughout the game. It could have been a better ending for us going to the World Cup.” “Pero for me, I just wanted to get my feet wet, especially ang tagal ko di nakapag-laro. It was just nice to be around the guys again.” Ravena will play in a tuneup game with the NLEX Road Warriors on Wednesday morning, a day before the national team leaves for China. cus on preparations for the country’s fourth hosting of the biennial meet. “I’m confident, although it’s a bit little late, but it is still beautiful to see we are working together,” Ramirez said. He said the PSC has done its part in secluding the athletes as ordered by President Rodrigo Duterte from the recent POC leadership crisis and reports of alleged corruption. “Whatever that have transpired in the past, it was part of the journey. Despite the very tight condition and many things are tight, we took good care of the athletes. They are heart and souls of the SEA,” Ramirez said. “I think those things taught lessons that we have to work together,” he added. Under the tripartite agreement, the PSC has to make sure that the disbursement of the PHP6 billion funds through Department of Budget and Management will be done according to President Rodrigo Duterte’s directive “that there should be no corruption”. “I would like everybody in the PSC, POC, and Phisgoc to feel the spirit of what the President has said that he means business,” Ramirez said. The agreement, on the other hand, mandates Phisgoc to ensure that any financial support granted by the PSC will not be used for any purpose not related to the hosting of 30th SEA Games. “Submit to PSC and POC the required financial reports and make available all records and documents, including disbursement vouchers, relative to the utilization of the funds,” the agreement read. After the SEA Games, the Phisgoc has to refund to PSC “any unutilized” amount it received from the government sports body. The 30th SEA Games will be held in different venues in Metro Manila, Laguna, Bulacan, Tagaytay, Subic and New Clark City sports complex in Capas, Tarlac. At least 10,000 athletes from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Timor Leste, Singapore and Vietnam will participate in 543 sports events. (PNA)

Casimero KOs Mexican foe to retain interim WBO belt

MANILA -- John Riel Casimero successfully defended his World Boxing Organization interim bantamweight title after defeating Mexico’s Cesar Ramirez at the San Andres Sports Complex here on Saturday night. Casimero knocked Ramirez out cold in Round 10 after connecting on an upper cut. Prior to the finish, Casimero scored knockdowns in the third, fifth, and seventh rounds. Casimero, who went up to 28-4, is now setting his sights on a unification bout with current champ Zolani Tete of South Africa, who is currently recovering from an injury. Ramirez’s second defeat in 22 fights snapped his six straight wins mostly by stoppage. In the co-main event, Vincent AsRavena trolabio stays as the WBO oriental bantamweight titlist after a fifth-round knockout of fellow Filipino Kevin Asiniero. Astrolabio is now at 14-3, while Asiniero falls to a 9-3-1 win-loss-draw slate. In a special clash, Charly Suarez remains perfect in his professional career after beating Virgil Puton. Suarez only needed 100 seconds to knock Puton out as the latter missed out on making the 10-count. Suarez, who competed in the Rio Olympics in 2016, scored his third straight win in as many bouts. All three wins came by stoppages too. (PNA)

Bill seeks to rename Camp Aguinaldo to Camp Antonio Luna MANILA, Philippines — A senior administration lawmaker has filed a bill at the House of Representatives that seeks to rename the main headquarters of the Armed Forces of the Philippines from Camp Emilio Aguinaldo to Camp General Antonio Luna. House Bill 4047 of Surigao del Sur Rep. Johnny Pimentel also seeks to amend Republic Act 4434 or the 1965 law that changed the name of thenCamp Frank Murphy to Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo. He issued the statement on today’s occasion of National Heroes Day. Pimentel, former chairman of the House committee on good government, noted that the feisty Luna has been “described by historians as the most brilliant and capable of Filipino generals during the Philippine-American War.” Luna, who was only 32 years old then, was chief of staff of the Philippine Revolutionary Army for 134 days during the Philippine-American War until his brutal assassination on June 5, 1899. “Luna deserves greater recognition for his patriotism and military prowess,” Pimentel said. “We are counting on our bill to rouse all Filipinos, especially soldiers across the three branches – the Army, Air Force and Navy – to emulate and live up to Luna’s positive qualities,

particularly his strong Gen. Antonio Luna love of country and exceptional skills,” he added. Pimentel, however, clarified that his Antonio Luna bill will “in no way seek to reduce Aguinaldo, the first President of the Philippines, and the Chief of Staff of the Philippine Revolutionary Army after Luna’s assassination.” “Aguinaldo has been fittingly honored over the years, especially with the 41.4-kilometer Emilio Aguinaldo Highway,” he said, referring to the network of primary and secondary public roads passing through the busiest cities and municipalities of Cavite. mation of Luna, which goes: “If he Luna had been widely credited for bringing “guer- was sometimes hasty and even cruel rilla warfare” into play way ahead of in his resolution, it was because the China’s Mao Zedong and Vietnam’s Army had been brought to a desperHo Chi Minh and Vo Nguyen Giap, ate situation by the demoralization of the Mindanao lawmaker pointed out. the soldiers and the lack of ammuHe also cited Filipino revolution- nitions: nothing but action of rash ary leader Apolinario Mabini’s esti- courage and extraordinary energy

could hinder its dissolution.” Luna was hailed even by the best US military officers during the Philippine-American War. Pimentel also mentioned James Franklin Bell, a US Army captain, who said that Luna “was the only general the Filipino army had.” Bell received the US Medal of Honor for actions during the Philippine-American War. Bell later became chief of staff of the US Army. Congressman Pimentel cited Frederick Funston, a US Army colonel, who called Luna “the ablest and most aggressive leader of the Filipino Republic.” Funston was promoted to brigadier general for cleverly engineering the capture of Aguinaldo in Palanan, Isabela. Funston also received the US Medal of Honor for actions during the Philippine-American War, and later rose to major general of the US Army. (The Philippine Star)
