The Doctor of Behavioral Health program at ASU’s College of Health Solutions prepares current clinicians and health care managers to advance their careers, while meeting the demand for team-based approaches to integrated care within an evolving health marketplace. With a doctorate in behavioral health, you can build the skills and competencies you need to transform health care systems. The online Doctor of Behavioral Health degree offers education from high-caliber faculty using an innovative curriculum — all to develop you into a leader who can employ and promote evidence-based, efficient and cost-effective models of accountable care delivery that improve health outcomes. Two concentrations — clinical and management — provide distinct pathways for you, depending on your interests in working with patients or improving operations. Multiple entry points throughout the calendar year, local internships and online learning give maximum flexibility to students who want an impactful career elevating the patient and provider experience.

Management core courses
With two concentrations available for clinical or management training, you can work directly with patients or help organizations integrate behavioral health care into their business operations. In both concentrations, 30 credit hours from a previously awarded master’s degree can be applied toward the required 84 program credits, leaving 54 credits to be earned with the DBH. Before embarking on specialized learning around clinical or management needs, you’ll have core classes to develop a foundation in integrated behavioral health. Note: The DBH program does not offer a pathway to clinical licensure.

Management internship
Required core courses for both tracks
In your internship, you will work directly with a management team in a medical-related facility that focuses on integrated behavioral health. The insights you gain from 240 internship hours will guide you as you develop, implement and present several business case studies that address the site’s efforts to support integrated care delivery. One of those case studies will be more fully developed as a management project in which you will assess the cost savings and return on investment of one program or service.

Following your crucial hands-on internship, you will finish with an applied project.
Applied project In both concentrations, you will finish your studies with a culminating project. You will use the quality improvement model to work on a problem in a medical setting, such as improving inefficiencies and outcomes, reducing waste or decreasing provider burnout. Your project allows you to make a tangible impact on integrated behavioral health, firming up your knowledge and your confidence in applying that knowledge.

Clinical internship As a DBH clinical intern, you will see patients for behavioral health concerns in primary care settings, freeing the physicians you support to help a greater number of patients. Your 400 internship hours, including at least 160 hours of direct patient contact, will provide you ample time to use the latest evidence-based approaches in behavioral health care. As a member of the team, you will be a consultant who provides patient care and supports efforts to deliver effective lifestyle behavior strategies and implement population health management initiatives.
