My family says they are proud of me. Of course, I would rather hear this than the contrary, but I cannot say that I am proud of myself, so I find that I cannot ‘talk about it’.

API’S MISSION

To improve mental health and quality of life by helping people maximize their potential.

e, the citizens of the U.S. made promises to do better, to treat our service members and Veterans with the respect and care they earned and deserve. And yet we have fallen short. 22 veterans die every day by suicide.

The expectations that military personnel often place on themselves is difficult as they may believe that they must be perfect to be mission ready.

Historically, there was a time when seeking behavioral health treatment could impact your career. These misperceptions and fears have prevented our men and women from getting the help they need.

The Suicide Prevention and Response Independent Review Committee briefed Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III on its final report to help the military combat suicide.

In response, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III released a memo March 16, 2023 calling on everyone in the department “to redouble our commitment to respond better to these tragedies and to prevent suicide.”

Financial concerns, relationship problems, alcohol abuse, shortages of mental health professionals, and housing hassles are all stressors that increase the risk of suicide-related behaviors.

Alvarado Parkway Institute (API) applauds the committee’s report and Secretary Austin’s response.

API has been a provider in San Diego for our service members, Veterans, and their families for over 39 years.

We understand the moral injury, trauma, and alienation that many service members feel. We understand the reliance on alcohol or other substances just to feel numb. We understand the disruption created by deployment and reunification with family, especially when financially stressed.

API is honored to be able to give back to our military in the way of culturally sensitive, evidence-based treatments and confidential care with experts in behavioral health, many of whom have served.
