EFFICIENCY A calendar is sent out each year from the Central Office giving a chart of the sorority's activities and the dates upon which reports and letters are due. The collegiate chapter president is responsible for more points of her chapter's efficiency than any other member of the chapter. As explained in the Handbook, she sends to the Central Office 8 monthly letters, 3 reports, 2 budget sheets, 2 calendars and a set of officers' reports, a total of 16 items. If all are sent on time the president would earn 32 points for her chapter. Last year five presidents had a perfect score: Theta, Ba,rbara Jameson ; Lambda, Patricia Shunk; Pi, Mary Grace Krieger ; Upsilon, Helen Stephenson ; Psi, Mary Gertrude Dreisbach. The treasurer sends all pledge and initiation fees to the National Treasurer as well as semester dues and Life Membership payments. She sends contributions to the Loan Fund Chairman; monthly and semester reports to the National Treasurer. If all are sent promptly, and all members are in good standing in June, the treasurer receives 34 points. Two treasurers had perfect scores last year: Lambda, Irene Wunderlick ; Omicron, Betty McArdle. The editor sends contributions to three editions of THE ANCHOR. The National Editor gives points for contributions based on promptness and content. The vice-president is responsible for sending scholastic grades to the .'\wards Chairman each year. The pledge chairman sends names and addresses of pledges' parents to the National Secretary. She also sends pledge examinations to the Examinations Chairman. The historian and music chairmen each send respective reports to National Chairmen. The corresponding secretary sees that the active examinations are written and sent to the national chairman; she is also responsible for sending the college paper to the Central Office. Lambda chapter wins the efficiency award for 1944-45, having a perfect score. Bluefield and Flint alumnre chapters have 36 points, a perfect score for alumnre chapters. ALUMNJE CHAPTER REPORTS B eckley Traditions: Christmas party. Collegiate chapter: Gift of $5.00. Social service: We fixed a box for the Pine Mountain Settlement and we also give a money contribution to them. We contributed to the local Christmas Toy Fund. Membership: 16. Local dues: $2.00.

3. Aided Mrs. Staehle in installing the Alpha Alpha chapter and the Muncie alumnre chapter at Ball State Teachers College on May 26, 27, 28. All meetings and conferences necessary to a beginning chapter were conducted. MISCELLANEOUS

A. Prepared a report on the " Procedure to be Followed When Visiting a Campus and an Outline for District Meetings." B. Prepared a notebook of sample material to be shown to Deans and prospective chapters. C. Rearranged and enlarged the files of the First District. I wish to express my sincere thanks to all those who helped to make this my first year in the First District such a pleasant and successful one. SECOND

A. Wrote monthly letters to the Central Office and answered all communications from the same office. C. Correspond with other members of the National Staff regarding necessary business. C. Sent letters of congratulation to Omega chapter and the Alpha Alpha chapter at the time of their installation. D. Wrote a personal letter of suggestions to Sigma collegiate chapter for the second term and end of the year. Mimeographed this, and mailed it, together with Sigma Second Term Budget, to all collegiate members, faculty adviser, and alumnre representatives. E. Mailed copies of the Alpha Sigma Tau annual Organizing leaflet to fifty colleges in the nine states of the Eastern District. F. During the National Council Meeting in March, prepared data blanks to be used in interviewing local sororities on Teachers College campuses. Also prepared outlines regarding alumnre clubs. alumnre chapters, and alumnre petition blanks.

MEETINGS

A. National 1. In cooperation with Sigma collegiate and Buffalo alumnre chapters arranged schedule for National President's Inspection in Buffalo, October 18-21, 1944. Attended all meetings and conferences during her visit. 2. Attended ational Council Meeting in Columbus, Ohio, on March 3-4, 1945.

B. Alumnce Attended meetings and social events of the Buffalo alumnre chapter for 1944-45 . Compiled Buffalo alumnre histories for 1943-44 and 1944-45.

THE ANCHOR C. Collegiate Attended numerous Sigma business meetings, a well as Rush Parties, Initiation, Alumnre Party, and other social affairs of the chapter.

III. EXPANSION A. Organized a complete notebook of A.S.T. Display Material on gold Bristol board to present to colleges and local sororities which may be prospects for future chapters. This notebook conforms to the outline adopted at the 1arch, 1945 , Council Meeting. B. Alumnce 1. Sent alumnre club and chapter outlines to Violet ester, Zeta, who requested this information for use in organizing a. possible Reading, Pennsylvania, chapter. 2. Compiled an A.S.T. New York City vicinity Directory from the replies received from alumnre representative . Mimeographed and mailed this, together with a persona.! letter, to 48 New Y ark City alumnre and 23 alumnre representatives. ent alumnre club and chapter outlines to Annette Kennedy , Sigma, for use in organizing a New York chapter during the coming months. C. Collegiate 1. Wrote personal letters and sent A.S.T . information to several Pennsylvania. colleges from whom requests had been received. 2. With Margaret Macdonald, national treasurer , attended a Convocation of the chapters of the Alpha Delta Sorority at S.T.C., .S.T. Edinboro, Pennsylvania, on May 5, 1945 . Presented information to the sorority delegates, Dean of Women , and faculty adviser. Previous to this visit, Mr . Ruth Maher, First District President, and Miss Lillias Barilar, Delta, had visited the Edinboro campus and discussed nationalization with the Iota Chapter of Alpha Delta there. My deepest appreciation and sincere thanks go to Ruth, Lillias, and Delta chapter for their loyalty and cooperation in interesting the sorority at Edinboro. We hope that next year will bring some favorable results.

A. Cooperated with both of the Sigma Alumnre Representatives, Mrs. Weld McGlynn and Mrs. Carl Pundt, whenever possible. Made tentative preliminary arrangements, as outlined at the March National Council Meeting, for a District Conference to be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, October 20-21 , 1945 , at the Roosevelt Hotel, under the chairmanship of Betty Weaver, Delta Alumnre Representative. As I was unable to attend the Columbus Conference, Charlotte Greeley, Zeta Tau Alumnre Representative, represented this district. 7. Mailed 40 booklets to colleges in the Southern District where A.S.T. is eligible but not established. 8. Carried on routine correspondence with National President and other officers. 9. Contacted collegiate presidents in regard to expansion of A.S.T. 10. Sent organization material and information to Charlotte Greeley who is to visit Radford S.T.C. 11. The regular biennial meeting of the Council of the Association of Education Sororities was held at the Statler Hotel in Detroit on March 30, 31. Mrs. Staehle, Mrs. Maher, and I were in attendance at the business meetings and at the very lovely luncheon which the Wayne University chapters of Pi Kappa Sigma and Alpha Sigma Tau, and the alumnre of all Association of Education Sororities groups gave in honor of the visiting officers. During the past two years I served as Association of Education Sororities treasurer and am now secretary for the current term. Another duty I have acquired is that of serving on the Council of Affiliated Panhellenics as one of the three Association of Education ororities representatives. This Council is made up of representatives of the National Panhellenic Congress, the Professional Panhellenic Council, and the Association of Education Sororities. The Council is currently considering two ubjects: that of giving some favorable publicity to the ororities to counteract some unfavorable articles recently published, and that of giving recognition to members of all three group in the ity Panhellenic . 1. Ordered and mailed Christmas cards to the Association of Education Sororities' officers, to the collegiate chapters of A.S.T., and to the alumnre chapters. 2. Sent letters of congratulations and awards to the two chapters which won efficiency prizes, Omicron and Flint. 3. Sent War Saving Stamp gifts to the infant son and daughter of Mrs. Phipps and Mrs. Maisch. 4. Sent all letters of business suggested in the Central Office Bulletin and have sent all communications requested by the Central Office. 5. Have taken an active part in the Cleveland alumnre group. 6. Sent letters of good wishes and greetings to Omega and to Alpha Alpha chapters at the time of their installation into Alpha Sigma Tau. 7. Attended the meeting of the National Council of Alpha Sigma Tau held in Columbus, Ohio, March 3, 4. 8. Prepared the minutes of the National Council meeting. 9. Sent all pledge letters to the parents of new pledges to Alpha Sigma Tau. 10. REPORT OF THE PROGRAM COMMITTEE MARY ALICE PETERSO

The topic fo r the year's study was Personality. Because the national program materials and outlines sent to the collegiate chapters fo r the past four years have not been widely used, no plans were sent for 1944-45. On her fall inspection trip M rs. Staehle stressed the national cultural program and found that the idea is growing and gradually taking root. Many of the chapters had programs this past year based on the national topic. I attended the council meeting in Columbus in March . The prooram plans were discussed and definite deci sions were made, which will be put into effect this fall. I am now working on the plans for 1945-46 and shall send material and suggestions to the collegiate chapter thi fall. The last of March I went to funcie , Indiana to as i t in pledoing the new chapter there. I also accompanied Ruth Maher to T rre Haut in the intere ts of organizing.
