Introducing Creative Learning Did you know that Sunderland Empire has a dedicated Creative Learning team which engages and empowers local people no matter their age, ability, gender, race or background with the aim of increasing access to performing arts? The team, supported by registered charity, the Sunderland Empire Theatre Trust, has been providing a range of engaging projects and groups with national recognition. Over the past year alone, Creative Learning has engaged an astonishing 76,000+ local people, through providing support and unique learning opportunities for schools, to producing highly engaged groups from dance and choir classes to relaxed drama groups. The team’s work and passion continues to grow and over the past few months has seen Connect Company, our group for adults with learning disabilities, embark on their first tour as a theatre company around Wearside, as well as the launch of new community groups including Broadway Babies and Dance Fit for 50+. It has also recently welcomed two new Creative Learning Officers on board, Sarah Marsden and Lucy Talbot, and aspires to grow even further in the coming months.

The canniest panto in all the land has been given a beastly makeover, with a sparkling cast that’ll make you say ooh la la with excitement! From screen-to-stage, star of Emmerdale and Ackley Bridge, Charlie Hardwick is set to sprinkle festive fairy dust in the role of Fairy Bon Bon. For Love and Freedom Bonnie and Clyde turned their life of prohibition-era poverty into a high-speed crime spree – this is their true story From an early age, Bonnie and Clyde had much in common; a desperate need to escape the wretchedness of their lives, an addiction to adventure, an attraction to danger, and a complete lack of morality. They saw the American Dream turn into a nightmare of bread lines and soup kitchens and became obsessed with celebrity, not only for the fame it brought but for the freedom it delivered. American freedom. The kind that only money can buy.
At a time when criminals enjoyed cult status, young Clyde’s role model was crime boss and media hound, Al Capone, a ruthless murderer who was cheered at baseball games. Bonnie’s idol was silent film star Clara Bow, as famous for her sexual adventures and emotional instability as she was for her films. Bonnie and Clyde followed in their footsteps, becoming notorious for both their criminality and their sexuality. They were the stuff of tabloid dreams – an ex-con and a married young woman on a sexually charged and deadly crime spree. While most people were imprisoned by poverty, Bonnie and Clyde ran free in the fastest cars Clyde could steal. They were punching life in the gut every chance they got, and they were adrenalised each time they knocked it to the mat. But it wasn’t long before adventure turned into survival and escape slipped into seclusion. Barely into their twenties, having killed thirteen people, most of whom were cops, their lives ended in a hailstorm of bullets. The Ford Sedan, once a symbol of freedom and life on the open road, was now their coffin, with Clyde dead behind the wheel and Bonnie’s lifeless head resting on his shoulder. This is where our story begins. Because their deaths were never in question. They knew they would ‘go down together,’ but that only intensified the exhilaration of the adventure. Where Big Hair Meets Big Dreams Middlesborough’s own Jess Daley talks I Should Be So Lucky, a musical romcom powered by Stock Aitken Waterman’s 80s hits! You’re playing Britney in I Should Be So Lucky, how much of yourself do you bring to the character? Writer and director Debbie Isitt likes us to bring our own take on things to the character we’re playing, so we draw upon our own personalities quite a bit. No one has paved the way with this musical so I’m sprinkling a little bit of myself into Britney. What’s the most exciting part of this musical for you? The music – it’s bangin’! If it can lift up people who come to see it in the same way that it’s lifted my spirits after quite a difficult year, then that would be lovely. You grew up visiting Sunderland Empire and made your stage debut there, are you looking forward to performing there again? Yes, I have fond memories of the Empire! I enjoyed Stage Experiences there and I was in panto Peter Pan when I was 17, and then White Christmas last year. What’s the best thing about performing near home? Getting to stay with my Mam and see my crazy Yorkshire Terrier and having a take-out Chicken Parmo! Nothing beats the North East. I feel really supported there and it’s nice to get back and re-ground.

You recently met Kylie Minogue, what was that like? It was a dream! I was like, ‘it’s ‘padampadam-Charlene-fromNeighbours-goldhotpants-Kylie!’. It was so surreal to work with her in rehearsals, and she was lovely. She’s really positive and passionate about this show. If you could have been a pop star in the 80s, who would you have been? Madonna was iconic. Her artistry was groundbreaking – what a girl! I loved 80s rock bands, so I’d like to have been in Hall and Oates or Toto. What’s your favourite song from the show? Better the Devil You Know – I didn’t realise how much I love that song! And, Never Gonna Give You Up! If you could take Britney for a night out in the North East, where would you take her? We’d end up in Flares. Out for the night – all night. She’s like me at 18. Why should people come and see I Should Be So Lucky? It’s pure joy. Pure escapism. To be able to switch off from what’s going on out there and just enjoy the moment and feel uplifted – that’s what theatre’s all about.

TICKET PRICES Based on the popularity of a performance and ticket availability, prices can change at any point during the show’s on-sale period. Due to the varying nature of our shows and their set design, we cannot guarantee an unrestricted view from all seats at all times. For the most up-to-date information please check online. ATG+ Membership, group ticket prices and any special offers, are subject to availability and can change or be withdrawn at any time. Family tickets are for 4 people with a maximum of 2 adults.
