With that in mind, we politely ask that you show consideration to your fellow audience members, who have come to enjoy the performances on-stage. We all have a part to play in making sure the theatre is a fantastic experience for all – you can help by ensuring the professionals on-stage are the only people entertaining us with their performances, and being kind to our dedicated staff, who are here to keep everyone safe. Anti-social behaviour towards our staff or other customers will not be tolerated.
RICHMOND THEATRE ON YOUR SCREEN
Richmond Theatre hasn’t just been admired by those who attend a performance, it has regularly featured on the big and small screen from as early as the 1940s.
Early examples include The Halfway House in 1944, The Naked Truth in 1957 and Half a Sixpence in 1967, all of which feature the façade of the theatre. Perhaps a surprise to some, is the Dad’s Army episode ‘Shooting Pains’ aired in 1969. During a morale-boosting night out to the Hippodrome, Barbara Windsor showed off her shooting skills on our stage as Laura La Paz before being recruited to help the platoon win a shooting contest.
One film that showcases the theatre’s auditorium, and how it has changed over the years, is Bugsy Malone (1976). Starring Bonnie Langford, the film shows off the auditorium’s wood panelling, the previous darker colour-scheme, and the stage. Most notably, the film shows the Upper Circle still with its bench seating!
Another film showcases the outside of the theatre and one of its more unique additions over the years. The Krays (1990), starring Martin and Gary Kemp, saw Richmond Theatre transformed into the Krays’ Regal Club using a number of outdoor shots that showcased the former circus tentesque canopy and the dark red colour scheme used at the time. The canopy was removed as part of the 1989-1991 refurbishment.
Some more modern examples of Richmond’s starring roles include Blithe Spirit (2020) starring Dame Judi Dench, Finding Neverland (2004), after which the screen-used curtain leading to the stalls bar from the auditorium became known as the ‘Johnny Depp curtain’, and Muppets Most Wanted (2014) which featured Statler and Waldorf sat in one of our boxes! TV examples include Downton Abbey, who also had their special BAFTA tribute here in 2015, Killing Eve (2022) and Richmond residents Ted Lasso (2020 & 2023) who have used the exterior of our theatre in Series 1 and one of our toilet cubicles in Series 3!

Timeless Humanity
We asked director Sam Yates some questions about Vanya, his exciting interpretation of Chekhov’s play, Uncle Vanya.
How different is Vanya to the original Chekhov play? It’s a fresh-feeling piece with all eight characters played by one actor, the incredible Andrew Scott. While the play has a distinctly contemporary feel in terms of set design, Simon Stephens’ version is contemporary, though remains true to the essence of Chekhov’s play.
What attracted you to this interpretation of the play?
I’ve always loved Chekhov. His plays have a humanity and generosity of spirit that is timeless. He holds a mirror up to human nature. He’s psychologically astute and I like that.
What is the overall theme of Vanya? I think it’s a matter of perspective, but I believe a central theme is about the preciousness of our time here on Earth and how we use it. Michael, the country doctor, questions his values and what he’s doing, while Ivan wonders whether he’s wasted his life supporting the creative work of Alexander, an artist he now considers a fraud.
Vanya is based on a play written in the late 19th century. How relevant are its core messages to audiences today? Chekhov plays often look at the behaviour of our collective selves; the hopes and fears and emotions that we all share. Chekhov presents aspects of being that haven’t altered. He’s interested in the human condition and his writing is very observational.
How difficult is it to direct a single actor playing multiple roles? It’s a joy! I adore Andrew, he’s restlessly inventive and
resourceful. He is in the middle of all the characters agewise, so he can draw upon his technical skills and artistry to interpret the passions of the young characters and the experience and wisdom of the older characters. He is such a dynamic performer – he’s able to give each character a platform and a voice in a way that creates a real intimacy with the audience, focusing attention on what he’s doing.
How does directing for a stage production compare to directing the many films you’ve been involved with? They’re totally different and I love them both for that. With theatre, time is continuous, so it’s comparable with a single frame wide-angle shot. It’s entirely reliant upon the actor in that moment.
Do you find directing adaptations of wellknown stories easier than directing new and original pieces? It’s not easier or more difficult. With a new piece it’s nice to have the freedom to see where a story might go.
Have you any advice for budding theatre directors? In my experience, hustle. Write letters, emails, make calls. I took up an opportunity to do work experience at the BBC in Manchester and I also took advantage of drama programmes at school. The skills are the same whether you’re directing a performance with friends and family or on a stage. Keep going, get involved in any way you can in the process, and know that whether you’re in school, a theatre club, or in the industry, the process is the same.

John Mortimer at his best
Rupert Everett stars in the witty autobiographical play, A Voyage Round My Father.
John Mortimer was one of the most talented and prolific writers of the late 20th century. As well as books, articles and stage plays, he was brought largely to public attention for his popular character Rumpole in his TV series Rumpole of the Bailey. The quirky character who called a ‘spade a spade’ without care for feelings or sentiment was loosely based on his own barrister father. Mortimer’s relationship with his intelligent, talented and eccentric parent is beautifully drawn in the humorously poignant autobiographical play, A Voyage Round My Father, starring BAFTA and Golden Globe nominee Rupert Everett.
The play shines a light on the delicate relationship between a young man and his father; a no-nonsense barrister who adored his garden at his home in the Chilterns but hated visitors. We get a real sense of what it must have been like for Mortimer growing up in the shadow of a brilliant and eccentric man. His tea-time conversation could span music hall, adultery, evolution, the ridiculous inconvenience of sex, Shakespeare, and the importance of avoiding anything heroic in wartime. His ability to find the right word is beautifully encapsulated when his son tells us that ‘He sent words out into the darkness, like soldiers sent off to battle, and was never short of reinforcements.’
While a myriad of subjects are dissected through the play’s flashbacks, there
are two that are unspoken: Mortimer’s homosexuality and his father’s blindness (a condition he likes to ignore unless he can use it to his advantage).
As well as razor-sharp wit and gentle comedy, we can palpably detect a son yearning for his father’s love and respect. Describing the play, Rupert says, ‘A Voyage Round My Father is nostalgic, like the summers of one’s youth. Slightly Chekhovian, but at the same time, touches of Dad’s Army! It’s a wonderful play and a great part. Very funny. Very touching. Not too long. John Mortimer is one of the greats and I am very hopeful that audiences will connect with this wonderful writer, our renowned director and an amazing group of actors.’
A Voyage Round My Father first appeared as a series of three half-hour sketches for BBC radio in 1963, before being adapted for television and film several times. These adaptations include a 1982 TV movie starring Laurence Olivier as the father and Alan Bates as the son, and a 2006 TV movie starring Jim Broadbent and Matthew Macfadyen.
The world class artistic team for A Voyage Round My Father will include former Director of the National Theatre, the multi awardwinning film, television, opera and theatre Director Richard Eyre, alongside Olivier and Tony® Award-winning creatives Bob Crowley (Designer) and Hugh Vanstone (Lighting designer).
RUPERT EVERETT JULIAN WADHAM
BAFTA and Golden Globe nominee Rupert Everett stars in John Mortimer’s celebrated autobiographical play.
Shining a light on the father-son relationship, A Voyage Round My Father introduces a gallery of unforgettable and hilarious characters.
Rupert Everett’s roles include My Best Friend’s Wedding and Dance With A Stranger. Stage roles include Blithe Spirit (Broadway), Pygmalion and The Judas Kiss (West End). Julian Wadham’s extensive screen career includes The English Patient and Victoria and Abdul

‘A RIVETING WARTIME THRILLER.’
THE GUARDIAN
By Katherine Moar. Directed by Stephen Unwin. When six of Germany’s top nuclear scientists –including three Nobel Prize winners – are detained by the Allied forces at Farm Hall, a country house in the Cambridge countryside, they find themselves shut off from the outside world.
The scientists’ tranquil summer is shattered by the inconceivable news that the Americans have succeeded where the Germans have failed, that the United States has not only built an atomic bomb, but has used one against Japan…
Unbeknown to the scientists, during their stay, every inch of Farm Hall was bugged and their every action recorded. This play is inspired by the true events that took place at Farm Hall between July 1945 and January 1946.
This production comes from London’s awardwinning Jermyn Street Theatre. The stellar cast includes Forbes Masson, Daniel Boyd, Alan Cox, Julius D’Silva, William Chubb and George Jones.

Celebrating 80 years of And Then There Were None
It’s 1939. Europe teeters on the brink of war. Ten strangers are invited to Soldier Island, an isolated rock near the Devon coast. Cut off from the mainland, with their generous hosts mysteriously absent, a gramophone recording accuses each of the ten of committing crimes that have, so far, gone unpunished by the law. When one of the party dies suddenly they realise they may be harbouring a murderer among their number. The tension escalates as the survivors realise the killer is not only among them but is preparing to strike again… and again...
For over 100 years, Agatha Christie has been teasing readers with unputdownable whodunnits; gripping and compelling storylines laced with tantalising clues and red herrings that often keep the real murderer in plain sight until the final page. Rooted in cunning, mystery and a tangled web of human nature that all of us can recognise, Christie’s work is crying out for adaptation, which is why so many of her novels have become sell out theatre productions and box-office hits.
The book on which the 1943 play was based was an instant hit – so much so that And Then There Were None is currently the best-selling crime novel of all time. While its complex plot made some think it would be impossible to produce, the play has proved so popular that it has been parodied many times in modern popular culture in films and TV, such as Superman and Family Guy to name just two examples. Movie adaptations have a habit of moving locations. While the 1945 film was set on an island off the English coastline, other films have located the action on top of mountains, on safari and in an Iranian desert.
In 2015, And Then There Were None was voted the World’s Favourite Christie in a global vote which saw fans from over 100 countries take part in the poll. If the story is keeping audiences gripped from curtain up to the very end after 80 years, surely you will want to enjoy a chance to settle down in a comfy auditorium and be thrilled and chilled by this unmissable timeless classic.
And Then There Were None is set to thrill audiences as the best-seller unfolds live on stage.
Ten strangers are lured to a solitary mansion off the coast of Devon. When a storm cuts them off from the mainland, the true reason for their presence on the island becomes horribly clear.
‘None of us will ever leave this island.’
Directed by Lucy Bailey (Witness for the Prosecution, now in its 6th year in London), the cast of this gripping thriller includes Bob Barrett (Holby City), Andrew Lancel (Coronation Street) and David Yelland (Poirot, Foyle’s War and The Crown).
Don’t miss this brand new production of the bestselling crime novel of all time, guaranteed to
keep you on the edge of your seat…

From Backstage to Centre Stage
We caught up with Richmond Theatre’s Mark Hawkins, who stars as The Actor in the UK tour of The Woman in Black
You’re no stranger to Richmond Theatre, can you give us a little bit of history about your relationship with the venue?
I have worked at Richmond Theatre for ten years now! Mainly as a Box Office Sales Assistant but I also have roles in a few different departments. Sometimes I work with the stage crew on get-ins and get-outs for various shows and I’m one of the tour guides here! All in all, I know this theatre very well. You played The Actor in the West End previously, what is it about The Woman in Black that made you want to return to the show?
It’s one of my favourite plays and lots of fun to perform, because it uses vivid storytelling and the power of imagination to create a world of suspense and atmosphere. The play means a great deal to me, and I’ve always wanted the opportunity to revisit the role.
When you reach Richmond, will you have lots of support from friends and family who will come and see the show?
I definitely will! Everybody has been really excited and very supportive; they’re all planning to come and watch. Before the cast was announced I had some fun moments selling tickets for The Woman in Black at the box office, not being able to let on that I will be in the show!
It’s going to be such a special week to be able to play a theatre I know so well, and an amazing full circle moment to be on the stage here at Richmond Theatre.

Obviously, I didn’t find what I was looking for.’

Having set two Guinness World Records with his previous sell out world tour, Professor Brian Cox is back in regional theatres to see off the sell out arena tour Horizons
Horizons has taken over 250,000 people across three continents on a dazzling journey; a story of how we came to be and what we can become. Using state-of-the-art screen technology, venues across the world, from New Zealand to the Arctic Circle, have been filled with images of far-away galaxies, alien worlds, super-massive black holes and the latest theories of the origin of the Universe.
When Stella sets off to visit London with her parents, she has no idea her life is in danger! When Stella wakes up three months later, only her Aunt Alberta can tell her what has happened. But not everything Alberta tells her turns out to be true and Stella quickly discovers she’s in for the fight of her life against her very own awful Auntie!
