Meet the two new leading cast members of Cabaret
Singer, songwriter, actor and writer Jake Shears is best known as the lead singer of the multiplatinum-selling, Grammy-nominated, Brit awardwinning glam rock band SCISSOR SISTERS. The band’s hits include ‘Comfortably Numb’, ‘Take Your Mama’, ‘Let’s Have A Kiki’ and the UK #1 hit ‘I Don’t Feel Like Dancing’.
Jake has recently co-written the music for the new musical TAMMY FAYE alongside Elton John which has just sold out its initial run at London’s Almeida Theatre and won 2 Olivier Awards. When not on the road, Jake divides his time between London and New Orleans.
Jake Shears said “It is my privilege and honour to play the Emcee in this incredible show. I am especially excited to be sharing the stage with the force that is Self Esteem. This role has been a lifetime dream of mine and I couldn’t imagine a better production of it to be a part of.”
As Self Esteem Rebecca Lucy Taylor has become the unapologetic pop star she always wanted to be. With her 2019 statement debut Compliments Please, Taylor gave voice to the feelings of insecurity and misogynyinduced frustration that many of us face every day, emboldening a whole new audience with powerful, truth-telling lyricism.
Rebecca Lucy Taylor said “I’ve never made a secret of my love of theatre and I honestly couldn’t be more excited about getting to make my stage debut as one of the greatest leads of all time. I’ve joked for years that there’s no need for a Self Esteem musical really because Sally’s story covers most of the points and here we are. I am both artistically and emotionally raring to take on this challenge. Pinch me!”

Rachael Tucker guest stars as Norma Desmond on Monday evenings
This thrillingly atmospheric musical, which features an iconic score including the songs ‘With One Look’, ‘The Perfect Year’ and ‘As If We Never Said Goodbye’, is reimagined by visionary director Jamie Lloyd for a new generation. Haunted by her memories and dreams, movie star Norma Desmond (Scherzinger) yearns to return to the big screen. A struggling screenwriter who can’t sell his scripts to the Hollywood studios may be her only hope, until their dangerous and compelling relationship leads to disastrous circumstances.
Drenched in champagne and cynicism, SUNSET BOULEVARD scrutinizes the ambitions and frustrations of its characters and their intoxicating need for fame and adoration.
West End star Rachel Tucker (Wicked, Come From Away) performs as the iconic Norma Desmond on Monday evenings from 16 October and Thursday 12 October matinee. Tucker joins the previously announced Nicole Scherzinger

THE KING AND I is the most sumptuous musical of them all. One of the great classic musicals from the “golden age” of Broadway musicals with one of the finest scores ever written including Shall We Dance and Getting to Know You. After winning four Tony Awards, it first arrived on these shores in 2018 to another chorus of cheers. The Daily Mail “left the London Palladium on a bright cloud of music”. “Looks and sounds ravishing,“ said the Daily Telegraph, while the Financial Times found it “simply spellbinding”. The powerful spectacle staged by the acclaimed multi Tony Award-winning director Bartlett Sher (To Kill a Mockingbird, My Fair Lady, South Pacific) now welcomes new star to the lead role famously occupied by many before her. Helen George, star of Call The Midwife, returns to the stage after many years to play Anna Leonowens, a widow from Victorian England who has travelled to Bangkok to teach English to the King’s many children.
“I’d been wanting to do a musical for a while,” she says, “and I was waiting for the right one to come along and just couldn’t say no. It’s just such a classical musical theatre part.”
Though better known for bringing babies into the world on TV, her first job after drama college was in the ensemble of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Woman in White in 2004. She has since sung at the BBC’s VE Day 75th anniversary commemoration and on the cast album of Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella
As for dancing, she took the dancefloor by storm on Strictly in 2015, so she won’t have any trouble with “Shall We Dance?”. In the show’s climactic song, Anna and the King dance a sweeping polka that is an ecstatic meeting of minds, hearts and, most of all, feet.
“When we do this incredible dance I wear this incredible dress,” she says. “I’m as big as a house. In the rehearsal room everybody has had to get out of the way. I lift up the skirt and drag scripts and tea cups with me along the way. It weighs ten pounds and it’s uncomfortable but this was the life of a Victorian woman.”
With a stunning score, given the full velvet touch by a sublime orchestra, exquisite costumes, a stellar cast that discovers dark, rich, exotic layers through incredible storytelling and the most charming and endearing group of young children performers, you have the ultimate classical musical theatre show. It’s rare to feel such warmth and delight about a production but THE KING AND I delivers that and so much more in abundance.

Shaun Escoffrey and George Asprey: 15 years in The Lion King
We caught up with Shaun Escoffery and George Asprey who recently celebrated 15 years in Disney’s THE LION KING at the Lyceum Theatre in London. They are now the longest-serving actors for the roles of Mufasa and Scar in any production of THE LION KING ever, and they’ve only ever performed the roles alongside each other.
Let’s go right back to the very beginning. Can you share some of your earliest memories of going to the theatre and who you went with?
Shaun Escoffery: I actually never went to the theatre. I think I went to a few pantos when I was a kid but I wasn’t really a theatregoer. The first time I started properly going to the theatre was when I was in it.
George Asprey: My grandmother was determined that I was going to love theatre. She used to take me to the theatre all the time and to the most bizarre things. She took me to see this play about Lenin when I was about 8-years old. And that was probably why I never wanted to be an actor when I was younger!
What was the moment when you realised you’d caught the acting bug?
Shaun Escoffery: I was young and we were doing a performance in junior school; I joined the choir and they asked me to do a solo. Afterwards, my school mentioned that I should be encouraged to go into the arts. I did it on the side because my family were very academic and were encouraging me to get into architecture which I was studying at Barking College. They had a fantastic performing arts department and that’s where I met people like Idris Elba. I was always singing and they’d ask me why I was doing architecture. So, I finished the architecture course and went straight into performing. And here I am!
It’s an incredible achievement to be the longest serving actors in the roles of Mufasa and Scar in any production of The Lion King. How does that accolade feel?
George Asprey: It’s not a case of celebrating longevity because you only ever take one song at a time, because you’re only ever as good as your last show. We have no given right to play Scar and Mufasa so we have to be as good as what’s out there. It’s taking it one show at a time and now all of a sudden we’ve had fifteen years of the show.
What’s so wonderful about our friendship and partnership on stage – and more importantly, off stage – is that we hold each other accountable as actors, but also as men, fathers, husbands. We are constantly striving to be better in every aspect of ourselves. I think that translates to our performances.
Shaun Escoffery: It’s a wonderful honour. I look back at myself and my partner in crime George with fondness and gratitude. We never dreamed we’d be doing this show for fifteen years. I feel extremely lucky to be able to do something we love with consistency.
George Asprey: We’re both very conscious that we are performing in the biggest musical worldwide, playing two of the most important roles in the most iconic show. There are so many people who have their first ever experience of theatre at THE LION KING. If we can engender a love of theatre in those people, then you’re guaranteeing the next generation of theatregoers. Every night we think about that person who has been thinking ‘how many sleeps until THE LION KING’. I think it would be fair to say, you are Lion King veterans. Fifteen years is a long time in any job; how do you keep it interesting and varied? How easy is it to see every performance as the first time?
Shaun Escoffery: When you’ve been playing a role for a number of years like we have, you can go back and readdress things and try something different. We have a beautiful burden playing these characters, and people spend money to come and see the show. They don’t care that we’ve done five shows that week – this is their first time and we always keep that at the forefront of our minds. We have a standard of professionalism that we take seriously. But we’re always trying to renew and find different aspects of the characters.
George Asprey: There’s freedom within knowing a character so well and having that trust between us on stage. We only have two scenes together but that first scene sets up the whole show and the premise for the rest of the evening. It’s easy to change little things and nuances. Occasionally, you’ll come up with something after fifteen years and ask yourself why it’s taken all this time to explore that.
What are the advantages of having worked together for fifteen years?
George Asprey: It might make the antagonism between us even more realistic! I always tell people that I have four sisters and I always wanted a brother - I never realised that it would turn out to be this 6ft brute from east London. That’s how close we are.

An evergreen success story
As WICKED flies into its 18th year in London, we look at what makes it so ‘Popular’.
The must-see musical phenomenon WICKED has been dazzling theatregoers across the globe for two decades. In London, where the show’s appeal has proven evergreen, the beloved blockbuster stage show is still packing out one of the UK’s biggest theatres after 17 years and tickets are currently on sale over a year in advance, to December 2024. One of the most colourful and spectacular productions ever staged, this epic fantasy musical ingeniously re-imagined L. Frank Baum’s ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’. A classic of children’s literature, this enduringly popular story has thrilled and fascinated the public - and other storytellers – for more than 120 years.
The American author Gregory Maguire sought to re-tell Baum’s wondrous tale of Oz and his darkly brilliant novel ‘Wicked – The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West’ was first published in 1995, becoming a New York Times best-seller. The name of the novel’s protagonist, ‘Elphaba’, is derived from L. Frank Baum’s initials (L. F. B.) and Maguire’s revisionist tale, which he wrote while living in London, posed the question ‘Was the Wicked Witch of the West really wicked or the innocent victim of a corrupt regime?’
WICKED was adapted for the stage by Emmy® and Tony Award® nominee
Winnie Holzman, creator of the landmark American television series ‘My So-Called Life’, with songs by multi-Oscar® and Grammy® Award winner Stephen Schwartz, the legendary composer and lyricist of ‘Godspell’ and ‘Pippin’. WICKED imagines a beguiling backstory and future possibilities to the lives of the Witches of Oz, revealing the decisions and events that shape the destinies of two unlikely university friends on their journey to becoming ‘Glinda The Good’ and the ‘Wicked Witch of the West’.
The acclaimed Broadway director Joe Mantello was tasked with bringing this remarkable ‘untold story’ to life on stage and the intricate storytelling and soaring music play out in a colossal production, complete with eye-popping technical wizardry and a breathtaking array of costumes. The production transports audiences to a magical fantasy world and the astonishing visuals combine with exhilarating choreography and brilliant performances to deliver its gripping story - and an unforgettable experience for theatregoers.
Soon to be a major two-part Universal Pictures film starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, you can experience the spellbinding original stage production at London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre, where it continues to ‘Defy Gravity’ 8 times a week.
