Where Big Hair Meets Big Dreams We catch up with musical theatre star, Jess Daley to chat about her latest show, Stock, Aitken and Waterman’s I Should Be So Lucky. How would you describe I Should Be So Lucky? It’s such a lot of fun. It has a real feel-good factor and the music is banging! I was part of the workshop for this production so to be a part of the show is great. I love working with the creative team, they’re all lovely. You’re playing Britney in I Should Be So Lucky, how much of yourself do you bring to the character? Writer and director Debbie Isitt likes us to bring our own take on things to the character we’re playing, so we draw upon our own personalities quite a bit. No one has paved the way with this musical so I’m sprinkling a little bit of myself into Britney. What’s the most exciting part of this musical for you? The music – it’s bangin’! If it can lift up people who come to see it in the same way that it’s lifted my spirits after quite a difficult year, then that would be lovely. You recently met Kylie Minogue, what was that like? It was a dream! I was like, ‘it’s ‘padam-padamCharlene-from-Neighbours-gold-hotpantsKylie!’. It was so surreal to work with her in rehearsals, and she was lovely. She’s really

positive and passionate about this show. If you could have been a pop star in the 80s, who would you have been? I don’t know. Madonna was iconic. Her artistry was groundbreaking – what a girl! I loved 80s rock bands, so I’d like to have been in Hall and Oates or Toto. What’s your favourite song from the show? Better the Devil You Know – I didn’t realise how much I love that song! And, Never Gonna Give You Up! I also really enjoy the Bananarama numbers. I was a big Steps fan in the 90s and they covered a few 80s hits – that’s how I was introduced to some of these songs for the first time. If you could take Britney for a night out in the North East, where would you take her? We’d end up in Flares in Middlesborough. Then we’d have my favourite North East take-out called Chicken Parmo. She’d definitely be out for the night – all night. She’s like me at 18. Why should people come and see I should Be So Lucky? It’s pure joy. Pure escapism. To be able to switch off from what’s going on out there and just enjoy the moment and feel uplifted – that’s what theatre’s all about.
