Welcome to Milton Keynes Theatre!
What a year it’s been so far! We’ve been thrilled to host a wide variety of shows, including smash hit musicals, stunning dance, thrilling dramas and sublime opera! Our line-up for the rest of the season is just as spectacular and we can’t wait for the return of so many iconic musicals this autumn including 42nd Street, Jesus Christ Superstar and The King and I. Other exciting highlights are the Olivier Awardwinning play, based on the best-selling novel, Life of Pi and direct from the West End, a new musical with a phenomenal soundtrack of iconic Drifters hits, The Drifters Girl, both are not to be missed!
As part of the amazing work led by our Creative Learning team, we recently welcomed 130 children from local primary schools to join us for Creative Generation Day 2023. The groups took part in a variety of activities, giving them an insight into the magical world of theatre. They played drama games, made their own show posters, had a tour of the venue, and learnt a whole dance routine and song, which they performed to each other at the end of this jam-packed and exciting day!
We’re very grateful for another year of sponsorship and support from MyMiltonKeynes, an organisation whose sign you may have seen on our lift shaft. They are a Business Improvement District that aims to improve the central area of the city. They have recently relaunched their FREE Shuttle Bus Service to an electric vehicle, enabling employees in Milton Keynes to move around the central area easily. Follow their social media platforms for more information.
On behalf of everyone here at Milton Keynes Theatre, we are incredibly grateful for your ongoing support. We hope you enjoy reading our latest What’s On guide and we can’t wait to welcome you again soon!

Directed by MATTHEW DUNSTER & ISABEL MARR The Hit Play By DANNY ROBINSThe power of Ailey 2
Be amongst the first to enjoy America’s emerging dance talent in this ground-breaking new production.
If you’re familiar with the popular 80s hit TV show Fame, you’ll probably imagine that the streets of New York are filled with dance-loving young creatives, stopping traffic and turning heads with their expressive, balletic moves. Fast forward four decades and the young dancers that form Ailey 2 bring their Big Apple energy to the UK stage for the first time in 12 years. Founded in 1974 as a bridge between The Ailey School and the professional dance world, Ailey 2 is Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s second company. Recognised as one of the most talented companies of its generation, Ailey 2 pours strength, grace and soul into powerful performances that captivate global audiences. Ailey 2 is a mix of youthful energy and creative spirit combined with choreography that will blow your mind.
The company’s artistic director, renowned performer and choreographer Francesca Harper, has developed an exhilarating repertoire by a diverse range of choreographers to create a landscape where the past strives to influence the future. Speaking to Broadway.com, Francesca said, ‘It’s an honour to lead Ailey 2 into its next era, keeping Alvin Ailey’s legacy of artistry and generosity moving forward while nurturing the next generation of performing artists on a journey of discovery.’
Developed in collaboration with the Ailey 2 dancers, Francesca’s work examines identity and community. Francesca’s Freedom Series’
excerpt is danced to a montage of acoustic and electronic sounds with unexpected twists and turns, bringing tender moments to its intrinsic ferocity. She also includes Revelations, a timeless classic choreographed by Alvin Ailey himself in 1960 when he was just 29 years old. A lifechanging work, it is the mostviewed modern dance piece, having been seen by more than 23 million people in 71 countries. It uses African-American spirituals, song sermons, gospel songs and holy blues to delve into the deepest parts of the soul. This enduring classic is a tribute to African-American heritage and Ailey’s genius.
The company will also perform the intensely propulsive central section of William Forsythe’s 1989 work, Enemy in the Figure with its rhythmic electronic score and radical use of light and shadow in its design. This excerpt puts the formidable dance skills of the Ailey 2 dancers on fine display, giving their craft and vitality an invigorating framework.
Artistic Director Robert Battle’s piece The Hunt is a primal ritual with a distinctly urban feel fuelled by a thundering percussion soundtrack by Les Tambours du Bronx. This athletic work explores the relationship between modern sports and the rites of the gladiators, revealing the predatory side of human nature and the primitive thrill of the hunt. For this Dance Consortium UK tour, the programme includes masterclasses, open rehearsals and workshops alongside special projects being hosted by member venues as part of the Ailey Project UK.
Ailey 2 is universally renowned for merging the spirit and energy of the finest early-career dance talent in the United States with the passion and creative vision of today’s most outstanding and emerging choreographers.
For their return to the UK, Ailey 2 brings an exciting repertory featuring Francesca Harper’s futuristic Freedom Series (excerpt), Robert Battle’s thrilling The Hunt, the incredible energy of William Forsythe’s Enemy in the Figure (excerpt), and Alvin Ailey’s beloved masterpiece, Revelations.
