OPERATION MINCEMEAT wins ‘Best New Musical’ at the 2024 WhatsOnStage awards!

The best reviewed show in West End history became the Best New Musical at the 2024 WhatsOnStage awards.

The show is taking the West End by storm.

“the feel-good West End musical of the summer…The reviews for the show have been ecstatic… the overwhelming impression is of hopefulness, expansiveness, possibility and joy.”

Alexis Soloski, The New York Times

“My far-and-away favorite production—and a complete surprise to me— was the musical “OPERATION MINCEMEAT… a comedy that has been cheerfully dismantling jingoism builds a stirring vision of real fellowship in its place.”

Helen Shaw, The New Yorker

Ever since the musical’s developmental runs at Riverside Studios, the team has been campaigning (hard) to have Colin Firth – the award-winning actor who led the film of the same name - attend the show, even deploying the hashtag “#GetColinFirthToMincemeat”.

Not only that, one of the boxes at the Fortune Theatre, home of the production, was christened in Firth’s name to coax him to the venue. The plot recently paid off, earning a visit from Firth himself.

Cast interview: Kiss Me, Kate

We recently interviewed Adrian Dunbar (Fred Graham). Read on to see what he had to say…

With a career spanning film, television (BBC’s Line of Duty), and theatre, how do you approach each medium differently, and what unique aspects draw you to performing on the West End stage?

You can’t underestimate the power of audience. We have a saying in Ireland, which is that it’s not the singer, it’s the audience that sings. In other words, the collective concentration of the audience is sometimes what makes things on stage great. This is what sets theatre apart from film and TV, although I have to say I enjoy all mediums.

You’ve played a wide range of characters. Is there a particular role or performance in your career that you hold dear, and how has it shaped your approach to acting? The sheer variety of my career is immensely satisfying, so I don’t have favourites, although of

course, Ted Hastings will always be dear to me for many reasons, the friends I met, the quality of the writing, and the fact that the character is so beloved by fans.

As a director and writer, how have the roles you have played influenced your perspective as an actor, particularly when taking on a character in a West End production like KISS ME KATE?

I think the attraction of Fred Graham, the character I play in KISS ME, KATE, is that he’s very different to the recent TV roles that I’ve played in Line of Duty and Ridley. This is one of the all-time musical greats from Broadway’s Golden Age where as well as song, dance and comedy I get to deliver Shakespearean dialogue, what’s not to like! What excites you the most about performing on stage again and how are you preparing for

this role?

Theatre is very much an engaged and a collective experience. One thing I’m particularly focusing on is the dance element which is new to me at this level, although I do love a dance! What drew you to this role?

The thought of performing at the Barbican in my first musical is incredibly exciting as I’ve always wanted to be in one. Singing was my first love and I’m always looking for ways to incorporate it into roles.

How will this production compare to previous versions of the show?

We’ll certainly be tweaking it to bring it forward to this century as some of the gender politics was rather outdated, there was a lot of spanking in the original for example, and now the relationship will be feistier and much more equal.

Why should groups book to see the show? It’s got it all! Romance, comedy and phenomenal timeless Cole Porter songs.

Please sum up the show in 3 words.

“Too Darn Hot!”

Guys & Dolls staff review

Groups Account Handler Ross Finbow recently saw the WhatsOnStage award winner for ‘Best Musical Revival’ GUYS & DOLLS. Read on to see what he thought of the show…

I was tentative and nervous about seeing this production of GUYS & DOLLS. I’m an old school, classic guy when it comes to musical theatre, so when I heard they were bringing the show back with a modern twist, I was apprehensive to say the least. Then I walked into the auditorium... well… to be more precise I was transported back in time to 1930’s New York. Hot dogs and pretzels being sold, cast and crew walking amongst the audience, beautiful neon signs, smoke rising from the vents and the rumble of the subway train takes you straight into Times Square at the heart of depression era. Two feet into the auditorium and I was immersed in a whole new world at a different place and time. I was hooked immediately, and I hadn’t even heard the overture, which is one of my favourite parts of any musical.

The staging and lighting design are so deserving of all the awards they have received and hopefully there are more to come. The immersive aspect of the show is not intrusive and if you have a standing ticket, you may be handed a flyer from the salvation army or if you’re lucky, a very special treat from Miss Adelaide that will make you the envy of all your friends.

There are classic songs that I’m sure we all know and love, but the lesser-known numbers are given the room to breathe. Marry The Man Today, Take Back Your Mink, Sue Me, I’ll Know

and More I Cannot Wish You, which had me wiping away a wee tear or two were personal highlights. The showstopper remains Sit Down You’re Rocking The Boat. This number brings the whole experience together and achieves what I love about live theatre. It unifies the cast, design, music, musicians and the audience. This lifts the whole energy of the piece that powers through the performance to the end of the show and beyond.

As a huge fan of The Wizard of Oz, I heard the news of a proposed new musical based around the wellloved story with some trepidation. Having seen the show, I was delighted to discover that my fears were completely unfounded.

From the first glimpse of the incredible set to the eerily discordant opening notes of Stephen Schwartz’s unforgettable score, it is clear that we are in a very different version of Oz than we may remember from

the film. The show is based on the novel - Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West and inspired by ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ children’s book.

WICKED stands alone as a funny, moving musical about female friendship and sisterhood, about prejudice and about good and evil and how that can be misinterpreted. As well as its warmth, depth and serious message, WICKED is also a big, beautiful show with stunning costumes and a large, energetic, enthusiastic and hugely talented cast and it can be appreciated on many levels – from children, who will enjoy the spectacle and take what they want from the more serious aspects of the story, to adults, who I’m sure couldn’t fail to appreciate both.

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this to everyone – you are sure to have a memorable evening that will leave your theatrical ‘tastebuds’ completely satisfied!

Star interview: MAMMA MIA!

We recently interviewed Stevie Doc and Tobias Turley who won ITV’s MAMMA MIA!

I Have a Dream and have joined the cast as Sophie & Sky. Read on to see what they had to say…

What was the audition process like for “I Have A Dream”? Can you share any tips for aspiring performers looking to audition for musicals?

Stevie: The audition process took almost a year from the initial self-tape round to the live final in December. I’d say to anyone auditioning for musicals to not overthink it! People want to work with kind people! Don’t be afraid to genuinely be yourself!

Tobias: Some tips for aspiring performers looking to audition for musicals are: Personality is key, and word travels fast. If you’re friendly and likeable people will want to work with you. Don’t be afraid to be you, there’s lots of people in this industry and only one of you.

How did you prepare for your role in “MAMMA MIA!”? Did you find any particular challenges or joys in bringing your character to life?

S: I loved the rehearsal process for the show! The creative team made it such a fun experience and the fact that the cast were so open to having a new actor to play with was so helpful in developing Sophie’s character.

T: To prepare for the role of Sky, I changed my gym routine up a little bit, I’ve got to be topless a lot so I wanted to feel good on that stage. Can you share any particularly memorable or funny moments from rehearsals?

S: After the very first rehearsal of Honey, Honey with Olivia and Jessie who play Ali and Lisa, I remember thinking “this is going to be a fun year. The girls were so welcoming and we got on so well so quickly.

T: It’s hard to pick just one, me and Stevie always have so much fun when we’re together, we’re always laughing.

Do you have a favourite song or scene in the musical? What makes it special for you?

S: I love Slipping Through My Fingers. Every night I get to stand in a wedding dress, looking at myself in a pretend mirror and think “what the heck I’m on a West End stage”

T: My favourite song in the show is one I’m actually not a part of. I love Knowing Me, Knowing You. Because it’s such a tender moment between the characters of Sam and Sophie. And Haydn (who plays Sam) delivers the song so beautifully.

How has the collaboration with other cast members and the creative team enhanced your experience in the production?

S: The cast and creative team have been incredible throughout the whole process. Everyone has been so welcoming and made us feel at home. It’s so much easier to act like you’re having fun when you actually are!

T: I feel so lucky to have joined such a wonderful cast, everyone is so lovely and joyous. So working with them is an absolute pleasure. Also they are all so hardworking so it pushes you to do the same. And for the creative team, it’s been a lovely process. Working with Steven, Paul, Leah is always a safe, playful environment. It’s great.

What message or emotions do you hope our audience takes away from “MAMMA MIA!”?

S: You can’t leave MAMMA MIA! without a smile on your face! It’s the ultimate feel good musical!

T: It’s hard to leave MAMMA MIA! not feeling happy, and positive. It’s such a feel good show.

TWO STRANGERS (CARRY A CAKE ACROSS NEW YORK) became the talk of the town when it premiered at London’s Kiln Theatre in 2023. Catch this new hit musical when it transfers to the West End’s Criterion Theatre in Piccadilly Circus this spring!

Dougal is a naive, impossibly upbeat Brit who’s just landed in New York for his dad’s second wedding. The dad he’s never known. Waiting for him at the airport is Robin, the sister of the bride. She’s a native New Yorker, she’s late for work, and she doesn’t have time to stop and see the sights. Instant attraction? Nope.

Star interview: Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)

We recently interviewed Dujonna Gift (Robin) and Sam Tutty (Dougal). Read on to see what they had

to say…

Please tell us a bit about your characters and their journey in “Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)?

Dujonna: Robin is an African-American, Brooklyn raised woman, who is very much in the quarter-life crisis of it all. She moves to Manhattan following in the footsteps of her older sister, Melissa, but finds herself caught up in the anxieties that come with being a 20-something year old, trying to ‘figure it all out’ whilst in living a bustling city and surrounded by people that make you feel like you should have your whole life planned out already.

Sam: The show centres around two young people Dougal, from the UK and Robin from NYC. Dougal is off to see his estranged Father and go to his wedding and it is Robins responsibility from her cold sister, who is the bride, to take him to his hotel that evening. The hijinks they get up to eventually lead them to realise that they are both unknowingly showing eachother who they NEED to be, rather than who they WANT to be.

What drew you to this particular musical and made you want to be a part of it?

D: The fact it was only two intrigued me from the jump. I was intrigued as to how that would work and keep an audience’s attention for 2 and a half hours. Then I read the script and felt so drawn to Robyn, I related to her massively and loved how “normal” she felt. She felt like somebody I knew or could’ve known. I also remember first seeing the amount of material there was and feeling intimidated, but always told myself that if it the work scares or intimidates me, that’s the exact reason I need to do it!

S: I believe there are a lot of projects and shows on at the moment that are telling huge stories about immensely important and influential people. This show is telling a tiny story about unimportant people and that in itself is a beautiful thing to me. How does it feel to bring this production from the Kiln Theatre to the West End stage?

D: Honestly? An honour. Working at the Kiln was one of the most amazing experiences so far in my career and this show, this role, this whole process has been so special for me. To know that it will have another life in another, bigger venue, where we can continue to breathe life into Robyn and Dougal is something that really excites me.

S: It reminds me of how unpredictable this industry can be. This was by no means at all in the annual diary but here we are! It is a great honour and I am excited to tell this beautiful story in a bigger venue

What do you think sets “Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)” apart from other musicals currently running in the West End?

D: I think how intimate it feels, even in the songs. It really feels like you are just a part of a conversation. Many people’s reasoning for not liking musical theatre is because of it often feeling like a “spectacle” and everything seeming over exaggerated but this show is far from that. It’s just the two of us, you’re forced to come into our world, and feel our thoughts and feelings with us. I think that’s what makes the show so special in its own right.

S: The nature of a two hander in any genre of performing is very exciting to me, but in a musical format is even more so! Traditionally you would have an ensemble of twenty to forty people onstage supporting the show, but this “two hander” direction the show goes on can only be a unique experience for the audience!

What challenges have you faced in preparing for your roles, and how have you overcome them?

D: Probably how much I related to Robyn on a personal level. In my character analysis I noticed a lot of similarities between Robyn and myself and though I think it’s important to bring the truth of your own personal experiences to a character where possible, I often found myself having to ask if a choice was made by me (Dujonna) or Robyn. Also, other than the interval, neither of us leave the stage for longer than 3 minutes and 26 seconds in the whole show, it requires a lot of endurance, physically, emotionally and vocally. This show has made me understand the importance of your downtime and resting!

S: As I have previously mentioned, this show is a two hander and while that is an exciting quality, it has presented itself with hurdles that have been difficult to face! It’s like playing tennis, as soon as you have said your line, you know that you have another one coming sooner than you think!

What do you hope audiences will take away from experiencing “Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)”?

D: I think the sentiment that sometimes what you need will appear to you in ways you never expect. Sometimes, other people (and often the last person you’d expect) can teach you a lot about yourself and who, what, or even where you need to be.

S: That you are important. Your stories and experiences and the obstacles that life throw at you matter.

A veteran of the New York and London stage, Vanessa most recently returned to Broadway in the World Premiere of Selina Fillinger’s comedy, POTUS: or, Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying To Keep Him Alive, directed by Tony Award-winner Susan Stroman and featuring an all-female cast. She starred in the critically acclaimed revival of City Of Angels in London’s The West End opposite Theo James, which was sadly cut short due to the pandemic.

She previously co-starred with Cicely Tyson in The Trip To Bountiful, which was the #1 play of the 2013 Broadway season. Vanessa received a Tony Award Nomination for her portrayal of “The Witch” in the James Lapine-directed Broadway revival of Into The Woods. She also received a Theatre World Award for her Broadway debut in the Tony Award-winning production of Kiss Of The Spiderwoman. Cast interview: Priscilla the Party!

We recently attended an exclusive rehearsal event where we were lucky enough to interview Owain Williams (Tick/Mitzi), Dakota Starr (Bernadette), Reece Kerridge (Adam/Felicia) and Trevor Ashley (Gay Cliché). Read on to see what they had to say…

How are rehearsals going?

Owain: They are going really well. It’s been hot and sweaty for many different reasons – A. we are in Australia, so we are going method B. The dances are intricate, C. We are singing our chests off + it’s a very sexy show, so it gets you a little bit hot under the collar.

Dakota: Rehearsals are going great. There is a lot to learn. A lot of dances, a lot of songs and a lot of lines.

Reece: Rehearsals are going fantastic. Everyone is having an absolute blast. We are having a wonderful time and it’s so lovely to be bringing this show back to life.

Trevor: Its been a whirlwind for me. I landed from Australia half way through the first week of rehearsals so I’m a bit jetlagged but its been amazing to finally be here and working on the show. The weather is very different for me. It was summer when I left Sydney but I don’t mind the UK weather. I’m fine. I just pop on a coat.

What is your favourite song in the show?

O: I love performing I love the Nightlife. It’s when the 3 of us arrive at a bar thinking its going to kick off but then all the ‘lads lads lads’ love us and we have a boogie with them. Lots of flirting in that number. It’s a lot of fun to perform.

D: There is a slowed down ballad version of Born this Way by Lady Gaga that is really poignant

and a lovely moment between the 3 queens.

R: It has to be one of my songs! I sing Better the Devil you Know, so if there are any Kylie fans –come and sing along.

T: I have to say, the new opening number Get the Party Started is my favourite to perform as I get to start the show singing a big belter at the top of the night.

Why should groups book to see the show and how has the show changed from the show that we know and love?

O: The clue is in the name. It is a party! What better way to enjoy a party than with your besties. There is something in this show to touch the hearts of anyone from any background, any age. If you just look at the 3 core queens, we are different generations. We all learn from each other and celebrate each other. It brings the timeless message of love and belonging to a whole new generation and that message is still so relevant today. Its an ongoing quest to keep bringing this message to people. It’s a new and more special way of telling the story because of the immersive element and how close the audience are going to be to us. If you already love Priscilla, you’re going to love it even more and if you don’t know it, you are going to absolutely fall in love with it.

D: As far as theatre goes, this is going to be one of the biggest parties in town. It’s a really

interactive show where the show and the sets all move amongst the audience. You’ll be encouraged to get up and dance and join us on the dancefloor. You are in for a wild night. Previous versions have been more of a traditional musical with everything happening on stage in front of you where this will be far more in amongst you with things taking place in the audience with lots of interactions.

R: It’s a wonderful celebration of the queer community. You get to see feathers, sequins, glitter and drag queens strutting around the stage.

T: This is the perfect show for groups. You get to party with us + you get to see my role which was Miss Understanding in the original production but is now called Gay Cliché. I had a little bit in the beginning then disappeared but this is a whole new version for me where I get to keep coming back where I host all night and sing more songs. It’s so different in the way it’s been staged but all of the elements that you know and love about Priscilla are still in the show. Please sum up the show in just 3 words.

D: Fabulous, camp, sensational!

O: Glitter, G’day, Bus!

R: Glitter, sparkle, fabulous!

T: Camp, fabulous, heaven!

Seniors group leaders preview: MRS. DOUBTFIRE

On 25th January, group leaders from over 40 U3A & WI theatre groups joined us at the Shaftesbury Theatre to preview the matinee performance of MRS. DOUBTFIRE

Before the show we enjoyed refreshments in the beautifully refurbished Royal Circle bar with an opportunity for group leaders to network with others from their organisations.

We were also joined by the show’s company manager and the Shaftesbury Theatre’s CEO who gave an interesting introductory talk about the show and theatre.

Our group leaders all gave unanimous feedback that MRS. DOUBTFIRE is a fantastic musical comedy with many already planning to bring their groups back with our great new group rates. Thursday matinees are one of the busiest performances of the week, so we recommend planning as early as possible to ensure the best availability for the rest of 2024.

As always – if you are a regular seniors group organiser or just planning your first seniors outing, please do get in touch. We would love to include you in one of upcoming matinee previews.
