FROM AUGUST 2023

Welcome to the Manchester What’s On guide!

Excitement is really building for our stellar autumn season, including some great shows like Annie and Jesus Christ Superstar – and English National Ballet will be bringing Akram Khan’s Giselle back to us, following its world premiere here as part of MIF in 2016.

Then we can’t wait for Manchester to play host to the world premiere of the hilarious new musical I Should Be So Lucky – featuring a brilliant soundtrack of pop hits from Kylie Minogue, Rick Astley, and Jason Donovan amongst others. And we’ve been completely blown away by the demand to see the incredible Hamilton – with a strictly limited run and performances filling up fast, make sure you don’t miss out on your ticket! Looking much further ahead, we’re thrilled that Wicked will be returning for Christmas 2024! There’s a lot happening behind the scenes over the next few months, too. You may well see scaffolding up or building works happening at both our venues. This is because we’ll be spending some time upgrading the ventilation system at the Palace, and repairing and refreshing the Opera House’s façade – in order to help safeguard these wonderful old theatres for the future.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

We are delighted to welcome you to our venue, where we want everyone to enjoy the show. With that in mind, we politely ask that you show consideration to your fellow audience members, who have come to enjoy the performances on-stage. We all have a part to play in making sure the theatre is a fantastic experience for all – you can help by ensuring the professionals on-stage are the only people entertaining us with their performances, and being kind to our dedicated staff, who are here to keep everyone safe. Anti-social behaviour towards our staff or other customers will not be tolerated.

A Cinderella Story for Our Time

Pretty Woman: The Musical brings big dreams and big hair to Manchester.

In 1990, the romantic Hollywood blockbuster Pretty Woman, starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, took the cinema-going public by storm. Made on a budget of just $14 million dollars, it earned over $463 million in global box-office receipts and transformed Julia Roberts from a hot Hollywood newcomer into an international superstar. In every sense, the film was a fairy tale for the modern age. The timeless story begins when Edward, a successful businessman who doesn’t have time for a conventional relationship, resorts to unconventional means. With no lady to help him entertain his influential clients, he hires escorts to fulfil the role of partner on an ‘as needed basis’. Unexpectedly, Edward falls for the beautiful, free-spirited Vivian Ward over a series of dinners and dates. He sweeps her off her feet and changes her life forever.

If you think this story can only be brought to life on the big screen, you’d be wrong. Pretty Woman: The Musical is a dazzlingly theatrical take on this iconic love story. It’s essentially a reluctant Prince Charming, being lost in the spell of an unlikely Cinderella as Vivian transforms herself from brash Hollywood streetwalker to a princess for keeps. Pretty Woman: The Musical has everything you need

to lift your spirits and light up your heart, with big musical scores, big characters and, of course, big hair!

Featuring incredible original music and lyrics by GRAMMY Award-winner Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance, a book by Garry Marshall and the film’s screenwriter J.F. Lawton, it is directed and choreographed by the two-time Tony® Award-winner Jerry Mitchell. Of course, no musical with such a title could be complete without the classic Roy Orbison track, Pretty Woman. If any show in 2024 is guaranteed to make you smile, it has to be this one.

In an interview in Playbill in 2017, director Jerry Mitchell said that the score ‘will have the feel of late 80s-early 90s rock: That’s one of the great things about Bryan Adams – it’s where he lives. So, you’ve got the rock and roll stuff, the up-tempos.’ *

Perfect with mates or dates, you’ll experience all of the classic moments and one-liners you love from the film – but also get to know these iconic characters in a whole new way. So, with the show now embarking on a highly successful UK tour, we’d encourage you to head to Beverly Hills for a night and witness one of the most iconic love stories of all time. It’ll be a big night out. Big. Huge!
