What’s On at the Edinburgh Playhouse?
It is my pleasure to be writing the welcome for our season brochure as the Edinburgh Playhouse’s Acting Theatre Director.
We are delighted to welcome you back to the Edinburgh Playhouse after a short 12-week break in our schedule. We successfully completed our planned maintenance project, working hard behind the scenes to further future-proof our venue. Whilst you might not be able to see many of the changes, lots of work has gone into improving some key components of the theatre, including investing in our building systems, orchestra pit and the wonderful façade which has greeted Edinburgh audiences for over 94 years.
We opened to a spectacular variety of shows over the festival period from Forth on The Fringe to Edinburgh International Festival’s The Rite of Spring and welcomed some internationallyacclaimed names such as Judi Dench and Greta Thunberg to our theatre. Looking ahead, we are thrilled to bring you some fantastic shows over the next few months, including opening the UK tour of Disney’s Aladdin in October. The production arrives following the success of Disney’s The Lion King last year and Beauty and the Beast in 2021, bringing more of Disney’s unforgettable magic you already know and love.
As Christmas approaches, we open the UK tour of Wicked for a spellbinding five-and-a-half-week run over the festive period. We are delighted to have the production back in Edinburgh and we hope you continue your journey along the yellow brick road to watch The Wizard of Oz in February. Next year doesn’t stop there – we can’t wait to have you back in your favourite place watching the likes of Shrek the Musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, Pretty Woman: The Musical and The Drifter’s Girl in 2024.
Marie Nixon, Acting Theatre Director Wicked. Photo by Mark Senior. We are delighted to welcome you to our venue, where we want everyone to enjoy the show. With that in mind, we politely ask that you show consideration to your fellow audience members, who have come to enjoy the performances on-stage. We all have a part to play in making sure the theatre is a fantastic experience for all –you can help by ensuring the professionals on-stage are the only people entertaining us with their performances, and being kind to our dedicated staff, who are here to keep everyone safe. Anti-social behaviour towards our staff or other customers will not be tolerated.
Charity Partners
Over the last year, we have been working with three fantastic charities to help them achieve their fundraising goals and to support the wonderful work they do.
We are delighted to say that we helped raise a combined total of over £60,000 for our partner charities Maggie’s Edinburgh, Waverley Care and ECAS through collections after shows, sponsored races and even an abseil! We couldn’t have done it without the help of you our audience members and our visiting companies, many of whom did shoutouts for our charity partners at the end of their shows.
It’s been incredibly rewarding to support these charities over the last year, and we will soon be announcing our new charity partners for 2023/2024. We look forward to continuing to give back and connecting to our communities throughout the next 12 months and beyond.
