Let’s do the Time Warp… in New Street Station

Birmingham New Street commuters were left in awe in March, when The Alex headed over to the city’s busiest rail station with the fabulous The Rocky Horror Show cast. Unbeknown to the passers-by checking their train times, this dazzling cast erupted into a glorious rendition of the iconic Time Warp.

2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the legendary smash hit musical and what better way to celebrate this moment in Birmingham?

The video captured from the day was shared across The Alex’s social channels and has gained over 2 million views and climbing on our TikTok account. So, make sure to check it out @thealexbham.

A Cheer for Stage Experience’s 18th Year

The Alexandra’s unique Stage Experience shows have been transforming and igniting the lives and careers of 2,000 cast and crew since 2003. Yet key to that entire experience is that each young person is learning to contribute to something bigger than themselves. Stage Experience is for the cast and crew, but the shows they make must be for the audience first.

Stage Experience always brings together a large group of young people and gives them this one, same goal. They have to create a show that must in every way be exactly as professional and polished and involving as any other production staged by The Alexandra.

So, each young person who joins Stage Experience will have learned specific, practical production skills ranging from acting and vocal techniques, to sound, lighting, wardrobe and the dozen more disciplines required for a show.

Through working together for a common goal, though, they have also learned deeply important personal skills. They have learned skills that will stay with them no matter whether they stay working in theatre, move into any kind of production — or even leave the arts altogether.

It’s not as if the productions are chosen because they are easy, either. The very first Stage Experience show was an ambitious production of Guys & Dolls. Since then, the talented young people of the West Midlands have performed Fame, Summer Holiday, West Side Story, Bugsy Malone, Boogie Nights and more.

The productions are all musicals, they are all large-cast shows, and they are also all stage shows with a strong emotional heart. Each show stays in the memories of its audience, and the aim is that each show will also create lifelong memories for its cast and crew.

Some performers will never have been on a stage before, and some may not have even had the opportunity to go to the theatre. For them all, it is a whirlwind of learning, of creating, and of performing to the standard required of a commercial theatre in Birmingham.

Stage Experience changes lives. You can see that in the faces of all its casts and crews, but it’s also launched such disparate talents as standup comic Joe Lycett and Wicked star Liam Doyle. They started on this stage, they started as part of Stage Experience, and The Alexandra is proud to continue helping the youth of the West Midlands reach their ambitions.

Frighteningly Good

We catch up with Murder in the Dark director

Philip Franks to talk about his chilling new play.

A veteran actor of the stage for over 40 years, Philip Franks is a familiar face from his time playing Charley in Darling Buds of May and the narrator in The Rocky Horror Show. Philip has also directed over 60 plays in the West End, at the National Theatre, the Chichester Festival Theatre and BBC radio.

Can you tell us a bit about the play? It’s a lonely, deserted farmhouse. It’s the middle of the night. It’s snowing. A car has broken down and a family arrives. They have their secrets, and the house holds its secrets too. As the storm rages, the darkness deepens and the secrets emerge...

Is there a message in the show? It’s not a sermon or a lesson, but if there is a message at all, it is to do with the vital importance of taking responsibility for each other, and the dangers of what might happen if you don’t.

What do you want the audience to take away from the show? I’d like audiences to feel that they’ve been on a really scary rollercoaster that has also made them think.

Why do audiences love murder or horror stories? On one level, we just enjoy being scared out of our wits – at least when we know (or hope!) that there is no actual physical threat involved. Adrenaline is a very powerful drug. Everybody loves a mystery, don’t they? Finding clues, solving a puzzle – it exercises the brain. Also, at the risk of sounding a bit pretentious, I think the best horror stories tell us something about what we are scared of as a society.

Why should the audience come?

Live theatre at its best is a wonderful, shared experience. I think in the post-pandemic world we have recognised the need for that communal experience even more than before. Plays are entertaining, they’re involving, they can move us, challenge us, frighten and excite us. They can unite a group of people sitting in the dark, listening to a story. That is surely a marvellous thing.

What inspired you to become a performer?

That’s easy; being taken to see The Tempest at Stratford when I was six. There was no turning back after that. I was never a class clown or show off. I just wanted to be part of that stage world and when I got the chance to step ‘through the looking glass’, as it were, I didn’t need pushing.

What is the most fascinating thing about putting on a professional show?

I would say the teamwork. With the involvement of producers, designers, sound designers, lighting designers, movement specialists, costume supervisors, production managers, stage managers and actors, we end up making a piece of work that will (we hope) challenge and excite lots of people. It is an endlessly fascinating process, with its own scary moments, the odd sleepless night. It’s a profoundly rewarding job.

Does The Alexandra hold any special significance? It’s a great theatre to play as an actor and a very well-run one to work in as a director. Long may it continue!

It’s Quiz Time!

We chat to Rory Bremner about what it’s like playing Chris Tarrant on stage in the exciting, interactive drama, Quiz

Ahead of Quiz coming to Birmingham we caught up with Rory Bremner, Britain’s top satirical impressionist, who stars as Chris Tarrant in this thrilling, entertaining and provocative drama.

Having starred in just one other play, Noël Coward’s Relative Values, what made you say yes to this, and what are you looking forward to most about touring this production?

For someone used to stand-up, it’s great to be part of a team on a touring production. With Quiz, I’m really looking forward to the challenge of playing a character over a whole play, not just a short sketch. Also, Chris Tarrant says he hates my impression of him, which makes it even more fun!

You’re an impressionist, so what is it that helps you most get into a character?

It is always the voice. Once you get that, the rest often follows. It’s an instinctive thing with impressionists, as playing a character is going to involve some acting. Luckily, both the writer and the director are as good as they come. That’s really exciting and makes me want to raise my game.

How familiar were you with the scandal of ‘The Coughing Major’ on ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ in 2001? Had you seen the play in the West End in 2018, or seen the ITV adaptation?

I knew about these previous adaptations and enjoyed the TV version with Michael Sheen and Matthew

McFadyen. I’ve deliberately avoided watching Quiz again though, as Daniel Evans (the director) told me explicitly not to. It’s the first thing he told me and I’m doing what I’m told! I’m also not starting too soon, because it’s enough for my wife to live with Chris Tarrant for only four months. Six would be too much!

If you could star in a play centred around the life of another of your well-known impressions, who would you like to bring to the stage most? Or which do you think audiences would have the largest appetite for?

Maybe Boris or Trump. I enjoy doing them, but I can’t stand either of them, so it might actually drive me mad. I helped Kenneth Branagh and Dominic West with their impressions of Boris and Prince Charles respectively and we spent most of the time laughing.

Who would be at the top of your list of impressions you wish you’d done (or have yet to do!)?

Playing myself. That’s the hardest one of all and I still haven’t nailed it yet.

Does The Alexandra, Birmingham, hold any special significance for you?

Yes! I’ve played the Alexandra before a few times – we did I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue there with Jack Dee and Tim Brooke-Taylor in 2020. Just weeks later, Covid struck and we lost Tim. He was such a lovely, funny man. Birmingham’s a brilliant city, and the accent is great for puns when making up new words for the Uxbridge English Dictionary! For example, ‘groin’ is the one that comes after red and yellow at the traffic lights. You get the picture!

THE COUGHING MAJOR MILLIONAIRE SCA N DAL

In a shockingly shameless scam, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire was duped out of £1,000,000. Or was it?

Rory Bremner stars as Chris Tarrant and Charley Webb (Emmerdale) as Diana Ingram in Quiz, the thrilling and entertaining ride through the infamous Coughing Major scandal which engulfed the world’s most popular TV quiz show.

The story remains a mystery and had over six million people glued to their screens watching ITV’s adaptation of this West End smash hit play.

QUIZ is a fictional imagination based on real events which took place in 2001 following an episode of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? It is not in any way connected with the makers of the programme or any of the individuals portrayed. The television programme Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? is produced by 2waytraffic.

Why we will always love The Bodyguard

The incredible, award-winning musical is set to thrill audiences.

Based on Lawrence Kasdan’s 1992 Oscarnominated movie of the same name, The Bodyguard has translated seamlessly onto the stage, thanks to the creative vision of producers Michael Harrison and David Ian. Former Secret Service agent, Frank Farmer, is hired to protect superstar Rachel Marron from an unknown stalker. Each expects to be in charge; what they don’t expect is to fall in love. A romantic thriller, The Bodyguard features classics including Queen of the Night, So Emotional, One Moment in Time, Saving All My Love, Run to You, I Have Nothing, I Wanna Dance with Somebody and one of the biggest hit songs of all time – Dolly Parton’s classic anthem, I Will Always Love You

So, is the story the same as the film? The stage musical is directed by the awardwinning Thea Sharrock with a book by Oscar-winning Alex Dinelaris who brings the story forward to the present day. The focus on stage is more on the character of Rachel Marron rather than the bodyguard and it also expands the role of Rachel Marron’s sister, Nicki.

The show was officially confirmed in February 2012, following six years of development and had its world premiere at the Adelphi Theatre in London’s West End where it was nominated for four Olivier Awards.

A sell out 18-month UK and Ireland tour followed, before the show returned to the West End at the Dominion Theatre ahead of a second sell out tour of the UK and Ireland in 2018/19. To date, this unmissable stage musical has played to over 3.6 million people in 15 countries and 45 US cities. Countries include the Netherlands, Germany, South Korea, China, Canada, Italy, Australia, Spain, France, the US, Austria and Japan.

With a love story at its heart, wrapped in timeless human themes, such as friendship, family and jealousy and with its spine-tingling score, The Bodyguard is a musical that you don’t want to miss.

‘BURSTING WITH WIT AND DEEPLY TOUCHING.’

As in the 1997 smash hit film, this brand new production is a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs, laughs and heartbreak. Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the film with a major national tour.

There are no heroes in Simon Beaufoy’s heartfelt play, just a group of lads trying to regain their dignity and pride. Gaz and his mates are down on their luck and feel they have been thrown on the scrap heap, but they are determined to fight back.

Starring Danny Hatchard (EastEnders) as Gaz, Jake Quickenden (Footloose, Dancing on Ice) as Guy and Bill Ward (Coronation Street, Emmerdale) as Gerald, with Neil Hurst (Coronation Street) as Dave, Ben Onwukwe (The Shawshank Redemption) as Horse and Nicholas Prasad (Doctors) as Lomper.

A Gentleman of the Theatre

We talk to director Nikolai Foster about his return to The Alex with An Officer and a Gentleman

Why do you think people should come and see the show?

It’s such a quietly beautiful piece of writing. The film translates really well onto the stage, and it also has some of the greatest hits of the 80s! It’s a powerful, surprising and emotional rollercoaster.

What are the key messages of the show?

I think, ostensibly, that there’s always hope and you never know what path your life will take. For Zack and Paula – and many characters in the show – it seems as though society has closed its door on them and there’s no hope. But this isn’t the case, and freedom and a better life are there.

What do you hope audiences will take away from the show?

We toured the show in 2018 and audiences were swept away by the drama, romance and music. As well as being entertained and having a great evening out, audiences will take away a sense of respect for the people and the working-class community depicted in writer Douglas Day Stewart’s story.

Does The Alexandra or city of Birmingham hold any special significance for you?

I first worked with my long-term collaborator, Lighting Designer Ben Cracknell on a production of the David Essex musical, All the Fun of the Fair at The Alex. Ben and I worked brilliantly together and have been friends and colleagues ever since. Lighting is so important

to my work as a director and the relationship with the Lighting Designer is key in terms of being able to live edit the action on stage, focussing the audiences’ attention on a scene and, crucially, creating atmosphere and tone. Most recently our production of Annie played The Alex and it was our first venue coming back together as a company after the terrible loss of Paul O’Grady, who played Miss Hannigan. As always, The Alex staff made us feel very welcome and supported during a desperately sad time. Birmingham is a magnificent city; I love the people and their relationship to the great theatres Birmingham is home to. It’s clearly a city that values culture, diversity and is very friendly – what’s not to love?

What’s the most fascinating thing about directing a live show? Every aspect of the process is fascinating to me. I adore dreaming up the concept and ideas for the production in the early stages of putting a show together. And the entire process that follows is thrilling – meeting actors in auditions, having creative meetings with the design teams, through to the sheer joy of rehearsals and bringing everything together in tech. The most fascinating moment is meeting the most important people in the entire process – the audience. Hearing the reactions, learning from them and working out what we need to do better is an exhilarating part of the process.

Up to £1.75 from each ticket sold is used for the upkeep and improvements to your theatre. We spend this wisely to give you the best experience possible, provide equal access for everyone and offer creative learning opportunities in local communities across the UK.

Additional fees may also apply where we sell tickets for non-ATG theatres, or for selected big name shows and performances. These additional fees may take the form of a per ticket booking fee and/or a one-off transaction fee. Please check our website for the most up-to-date ticket prices and fees.

The information in this brochure is correct at the time of going to press. We reserve the right to make alterations to the published programme of events, their prices, concessions, offers and fees.

SUSTAINABILITY

We work to continuously improve our environmental performance and find solutions that reduce environmental impact, therefore this brochure is printed on responsibly sourced paper. Please continue to help the environment by recycling or passing onto a friend.
