EDITORIAL

The Woman in Black We spoke to acclaimed author Dame Susan Hill about her hit novel and how it evolved from page-to-stage. The Woman in Black ran for 33 years in the West End and is touring again. Did you anticipate it would have such a long life? No! We thought it would run for six weeks! It first opened in Scarborough in 1988. Alan Ayckbourn, who was the Artistic Director, wanted to have something to put into the studio theatre. Stephen Mallatratt went on holiday and at the airport he picked up The Woman in Black. While lying on a beach he thought he could make the story work on a stage. What was it like the first time you saw your characters on-stage? The Woman in Black very much existed in my mind, I knew what she felt like, so it is very peculiar to feel her presence in a theatre. The two gentlemen are such brilliantly developed characters and utilised so well by Stephen’s writing for the stage that they become quite different. I’m always interested in seeing new actors taking over. Every pair of actors brings something different to it. Also, Stephen Mallatratt’s writing makes you use your imagination, and that’s the brilliance of it and what makes some elements scarier! Where did your original idea for The Woman in Black come from? I have always loved reading ghost stories. I ended up making a list of the key elements I thought a good ghost story should have and

10 | ATGTICKETS.COM/York

worked from that. I thought it should have lots of atmosphere, an unnerving location and that the ghost needed a reason to be there. The Woman in Black came to me straight away – I wanted her to be a woman of her period. Then various things that I had found alarming as a child came to mind, including the image of the cobwebcovered nursery which I always think has elements of Miss Havisham in it. Why do you think we enjoy being scared? It’s a primitive instinct, to be frightened. The joy of a ghost story is that we are being frightened delightfully. We know that we’re safe and can allow ourselves to be scared. Perhaps it’s our way of learning to manage our fears? Do you believe in ghosts? I think I do, in a sense. I’ve never seen one, but I know people who have, and you hear of dogs being spooked – why would an animal make that up? What do you think it is about theatre that makes it such a wonderful storytelling platform? There’s something special about live theatre which you can’t get from film. The Woman in Black attracts young audiences, many have never been to a play, and it bowls them over. It’s that flesh and blood immediacy that makes it so special.

EDITORIAL

A Time to Fear Writer Danny Robins talks to us about his hit play, 2:22 A Ghost Story. Can you tell us a bit about 2:22 A Ghost Story? It’s definitely best going into 2:22 knowing as little as possible about the production, but I can say that the story revolves around a married couple, Jenny and Sam who are redecorating their new home, and Jenny is convinced they’re visited by a supernatural presence every day at 2:22am.

Victorian house with my partner that was once owned by an elderly woman – sadly, we weren’t haunted by the supernatural!

Danny Robins.

It’s a jump-out-of-your-seat, spine-tingling psychological thriller, but also a really great night out. It’s a good way to get to know your neighbour as well, as you’ll probably need an arm to grab for support! What were your inspirations for writing 2:22? It was inspired by a friend of mine who said she’d seen a ghost, who’s not the type of person I’d expect to have that kind of experience. I was immediately fascinated by the idea that different people would react to her in very different ways – some people might believe her and some people might laugh at her. I then thought, what if you distil that range of opinions into a couple, where one person believes there is a ghost in the house and the other person adamantly disagrees. What then happens to their relationship? There are also some uncanny parallels between my life and the play. I was redecorating an old

18 | ATGTICKETS.COM/York

What’s the working relationship like between you as writer and all the creatives who bring the script to life? I’ve been very closely involved in the production – I work with every new cohort of actors at rehearsals and am still a regular in the audience. As we’re on our fifth iteration in the West End, my involvement does become less necessary, but it’s a project that has been life-changing for me, so it’s always a joy to come back to. Do you believe in ghosts? Have you had any supernatural experiences? I always call myself a skeptic who wants to believe, but I’m not quite there yet. I’ve never had a supernatural experience, but I still live in hope! What will audiences love most about the show? Sometimes theatre can feel a little stuffy, and audiences are asked to sit quietly – but this play gives you the license to gasp, scream, and yelp! 2:22 is an adrenaline-fuelled experience that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. I’m sure that all families, couples, and friends who see the show will spend the rest of their evenings haunted by possibilities of the supernatural!
