Cinderella
We are delighted to welcome you to our venue, where we want everyone to enjoy the show. With that in mind, we politely ask that you show consideration to your fellow audience members, who have come to enjoy the performances on-stage. We all have a part to play in making sure the theatre is a fantastic experience for all – you can help by ensuring the professionals on-stage are the only people entertaining us with their performances, and being kind to our dedicated staff, who are here to keep everyone safe. Anti-social behaviour towards our staff or other customers will not be tolerated.
Catching up with Craig Revel Horwood, Panto’s Wicked Stepmother… Are you excited to be returning to Wimbledon for the festive season? It’s going to be great! You know I love Wimbledon, and I’ve got lots of friends there so, for me, it’s great! And, more importantly, the audiences are so great and the staff at New Wimbledon Theatre are absolutely delightful. What keeps you coming back to live theatre as well as your work on the screen? Live theatre for me is a joy because it’s different and it’s organic, so you don’t just get one or two opportunities out there, you get an entire season of doing it. Whereas, in film, you do three or four takes and then the editor and the director choose which one – you don’t have any control. In the theatre you have control over your performance in that way and you can keep elevating it. What can audiences look forward to this year from Cinderella at New Wimbledon Theatre? Great costumes, obviously! Fantastic singing, fantastic acting, really great comedy – just a great show. I think the production value of Cinderella is just amazing. That’s what’s so fantastic about it! Read more on pages 8 & 9.

Craig Revel Horwood as Wicked Stepmother, Photography by Craig Sugden.
EDITORIAL
Strictly Panto! We caught up with Craig Revel Horwood who returns to play the Wicked Stepmother in Wimbledon’s panto Cinderella!
8 | ATGTICKETS.COM/Wimbledon
FROM DECEMBER 2023
How does it feel to be returning to the role of Cinderella’s Wicked Stepmother? Well, I love her because she’s so evil! I mean, she loves her uglies – you know, her two daughters – but, of course, the third one was actually the most attractive and I think she’s just violently jealous of her. She treats her terribly! But it’s a wonderful story and it’s a really fantastic cast and it’s a really fun part to play! Would you ever want to play a hero, or is it just more fun to play the villain? Ah, no! I’d never want to play the love interest. I’d never want to play the hero. I always think villains are way more interesting characters because they have a history and a past that has made them a little bit bad, so it’s good to invest in that. You get fantastic scenes as well. There’s always some comeuppance to the character – to their plight through the show. Much more fun!
it, it was really hard work! You can actually leave the space and break the fourth wall. Panto’s the only genre where I think you can improvise as much as you do. That’s what I love about it. You can have a lot of fun with the audience. Panto is such a huge part of Christmas tradition here – do you have any personal festive traditions? We hear you have a legendary New Years party. I do! It’s for the panto people who are all the waifs and strays without their families. I hold a big old firework pool party. I heat the pool to excess and it’s fantastic! Nobody will ever get out of it, that’s the problem! You’ve spoken about how excited you are to work with this cast – are we right in thinking you know Alison Jiear from performing together back in Australia? When she was 18! I remember she was singing Whitney Houston songs at the time and that was up in Sydney. We became the best of friends. And now I’m 58! Anyway, we’re still here, dear. We’re still dragging it up, getting into costume and having a laugh. It’s great!
‘IT’S GOING TO BE GREAT! YOU KNOW I LOVE WIMBLEDON.’
You have some fabulous costumes. Do you have any favourites from previous years that you’re hoping will be making a comeback? Well, there’s one that was really skimpy – I loved that [laughs], but I doubt that one’s going to come back! That’s one I started in, and I was literally in a bra and knickers, but I don’t know that my body’s up to that nowadays – that was about 15 years ago! I wouldn’t mind if it came back. I think it would delight and thrill the audience [laughs]. You started out performing as a drag queen back in Australia. How does it feel to be coming back to drag in such a different way with it being a staple part of British culture in pantomime, rather than more part of the subculture in Australia? In Australia we don’t have panto. We didn’t grow up with it. I didn’t understand it. I thought it was a bizarre form of art in the theatre. When I first saw one I thought ‘this is bit weird’ [laughs] and then when I first did
FROM DECEMBER 2023
And one final question – how do you think your Wicked Stepmother character would fare on Strictly? Would she be a fan favourite? Would she blow us all away with her dancing? I think she’d be a family favourite. I think people would learn to not hate her and fall in love with her. I think because, on Strictly, you get to see the real stepmother, you know, the poor woman who’s just looking for money and love and a bright future [laughs]. Catch Craig Revel Horwood along with the fab-u-lous Alison Jiear, Pete Firman, Daniel Norford, Solomon Davy and Cassie Compton in Cinderella from Fri 8 Dec – Sun 7 Jan 2024 to make your festive season fit for a fairy tale!
