COMMUNITY SERVICE ART PROGRAMS BAGS & BEDDINGS WORKSHOP All Seasons West Bloomfield will collaborate with the Southfield-based National Council of Jewish Women’s Green Committee, focused on environmental issues. This project aims to reduce plastic waste going into landfills and waterand aids the homeless. The effort involves taking plastic bags, cutting them into strips of plastic yarn — or “plarn” — and then knitting or crocheting into surprisingly comfortable bedding for displaced individuals. ASWB will be holding a week-long drive to collect as many plastic bags as possible and learn this unique knitting technique. Residents and management will then drop off all bags and bedding to the Council’s Green Committee.

TIE BLANKET WORKSHOPS Last Quarter, our Sales and Life Enrichment departments worked with the organization “Fleece and Thank You,” which is dedicated to providing connection, comfort to children facing illness and their families supporting them. The goal was to provide every child facing hospital treatments with a colorful, comfortable fleece blanket and a video message of support. All Seasons held a “tie blacked social” event with residents and staff, and together we made blankets and created videos, capturing each resident’s special message to each child. It was such a huge success, we’re bringing this event and community service art program.

SEASON OPENING 2022: Kirill Petrenko conducts Mahler’s Seventh Symphony Kirill Petrenko interpreted Mahler with the Berliner Philharmoniker for the first time in 2020, conducting the Sixth Symphony. Critics and audience were thrilled by the “virtually flawless precision” (The New York Times). Now he opens the 2022/23 season with the Seventh. Mahler thought it was his “best work and preponderantly cheerful in character”. But dark colours predominate over long stretches, and doubt is combined with joy in the finale. The Berlin Philharmonic is a German orchestra based in Berlin. It is one of the most popular, acclaimed and wellrespected orchestras in the world. It all started with an act of rebellion: in March 1882, 50 members of the ensemble run by the popular musical director Benjamin Bilse refused to sign their new contracts – they found the working conditions too unfavourable: they were to earn hardly more than day labourers. The musicians decided to set up on their own and from then on to work at their own risk. They relied more on entertaining works, while presenting more challenging pieces and “novelties”, i.e. new works by contemporary composers, in their “Symphony Concerts”.

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT MEET JANET HALPER Janet Halper was born in Detroit, MI. It was there that she met her husband, Allen. When they married they moved to Oak Park where they created many memories. Janet was a school teacher for most of her life. She primarily taught English and Math. She loves writing and poetry and is very good at it! Janet is most proud of her husband, family, and her teaching career. She says, “I’m very lucky to have lived (and am still living!) such a good life.” She introduces herself to the community!

“Hello, hello, hello!" My name is Janet Halper and my husband, Allen, and I have been living here at All Seasons for a very short time. It was a very difficult decision for us to sell our condo, pack up our belongings, leave our warm and friendly neighborhood of 28 years, but we had no choice. I had developed an incurable muscle disease and Allen was tending to fall more often. So we made the move to All Seasons.

column every few months highlighting their volunteers. It was a pleasure to do, and I met many interesting folks. While in the process of meeting Alan, our Executive Director, I mentioned how special it was for me to meet so many warm and interesting folks who contributed their time and energy to our local library. After living here at All Seasons for just four months, I have felt that same warmth and congeniality that I did interviewing the Library volunteers. So, if any residents here would like to sit down with me and share their histories, it would be my pleasure to continue to highlight the interesting stories that make up who we are (you get to read and edit the draft!). Sincerely, Janet Halper, Room 250

It could not have been to a better place. The broad smiles and the friendly greetings we have received since Day One have been major reasons for our easy and smooth settling-in. Thank you, all! A few years ago, the Friends of the West Bloomfield Library asked me to write a 18

TESTIMONIALS

FROM OUR RESIDENTS & FAMILIES Maureen @ ASAA: “Who would have believed that a senior community could become my extended family in a matter of months? Such was my experience this summer and I consider my decision to move to All Seasons Ann Arbor one of my best.” Ardin @ ASBH: “My 97 year old father just moved into his apartment at All Seasons. It's a beautiful apartment. He has met some wonderful residents here and is having no trouble making new friends. The dining room is beautiful and Dad says the food is really good. He has attended some concerts and looks forward to picking out the next activity from a list of many great things to do. He has even hopped on the treadmill in the exercise room at All Seasons. He is very happy here. The staff is so friendly and very helpful. I'm so glad Dad suggested we take a tour of All Seasons to see what they had to offer.” Dianna @ ASNA: “I can’t say enough good22 things about All Seasons. My father in law came from Manhattan and has never looked or felt better with the care he has been given in assisted living. My mom had a water leak in her house and was only staying in All Seasons temporarily. After two months, she put her home up for sale and never looked back. She loves all the daily activities All Seasons provides, music, food and gatherings are above and beyond.” Johnny @ ASOV: “Walking into All Seasons for the first time was like walking into a beautiful picture! I was amazed at the care and detail the architect’s took when creating this home for the Residents. Seeing the smile on the Residents and employees’ faces told me that this home was not only beautiful, but that the care and detail extended far into the heart of the building.” Kevin @ ASRH: “Love this place… people are so friendly… love the atmosphere… and when they were showing me around several residents came up and said they love it here.” Randi @ ASWB: “My mother has lived at ASWB for 2 years. The staff at All Seasons are caring and kind. It’s nice to come in and be greeted with smiling faces who are willing to help. The dining room staff have been very accommodating and helpful. They go out of their way to make things right. All the staff did a wonderful job during COVID to make residents feel comfortable and safe.” 24

DESIGNING ALL SEASONS A WORD ABOUT THE ART We are happy to share with our residents, visitors, and friends the art exhibited throughout our community. Each piece was individually conceived and created specifically for where it is presented for collective viewing enjoyment. To put it another way, the photographs are specifically curated considering the interior design and dimensions of each room. Each of the six All Seasons - in Ann Arbor, Birmingham, Naples, Oro Valley, Rochester Hills, and West Bloomfield - showcase photography highlighting the local natural landscape and urban features, creating a porous border between interior and exterior beauty. We are committed and proud to display art within our communities that has been commissioned specifically for the purpose of enhancing the beauty of the communities as well as inspiring a sense of energy and joy. It is consistent with our mission to create within our communities an atmosphere which we are proud to proclaim is engaging, enlivening, innovative, and “totally captivating.” For that purpose, a great deal of time, effort and resources are dedicated 25

to each community for the creation of a portfolio that is totally unique, privately commissioned, and signed by the creator. These art collections are highly valued and significantly insured. We hope that these unique pieces - in some cases on canvases up to 10 feet long - express the exuberance of their subjects and engender the energy and “felt” experience of being alive - indeed, of life itself.

A COLUMN ON GLOBAL APPROACHES AND INSIGHTS INTO AGING WELL

WELLNESS CORNER: SOUND HEALTH Did you know about the groundbreaking Sound Health Initiative and “Music and the Mind”? If you haven’t, you might have heard of one of the key stakeholders of the project -none other than renowned soprano Renée Fleming! Renée Fleming is a leading advocate for the study of the powerful connections between the arts and health. As Artistic Advisor at Large to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Renée has spearheaded a collaboration with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), with the participation of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). The Sound Health initiative explores and brings attention to research and practice at the intersection of music, health, and neuroscience.

Renée Fleming is passionate about the central importance of music and the arts in our society. Most of us have, at times, felt moved or comforted by music, but scientists are now discovering that music can teach us a lot about the brain itself. Music engages many neural regions at once, and evidence suggests that it can shape and even alter our brains. In addition to using music to better understand the complex functioning of the brain, researchers have found creative arts therapy to be effective tools in addressing the effects of an ever-widening array of conditions. Especially compelling is the fact that music, dance, and art therapies are cost-effective, non-pharmaceutical, and noninvasive. Many can be administered in group settings, offering benefits for emotional wellbeing, and through tele-health, increasing accessibility. And the impact of arts on the developing brains of children is another burgeoning field of study, with effects reaching beyond test results and scholastic aptitude to creativity and success throughout life.
