Faculty of Business and Management Sciences
Letter from the Dean, Professor Paul Green Dear Student Well done and Congratulations to you, your family and your guardians on your achievements in 2023! Thank you for taking the first step of your academic journey with the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences (FBMS), the largest Faculty in the Institution. As athletes prepare for a race, a netball, soccer, cricket or a rugby world cup and a musician or poet prepares for a performance, so too are you preparing to achieve your academic goals and shaping your careers. We feel extremely privileged that you have chosen us to be part of your journey in 2024, and that you will be joining one of our sixteen programmes offered across the Bellville, District Six, Granger Bay, Mowbray and Wellington Campuses. The Faculty provides an environment which respects and celebrates the diversity and richness of the country, and our international partners. As you are all different, we celebrate the differences and look forward to meaningfully engaging with you, so that we can learn from each other, about each other, and at times we may have to unlearn. Through the various platforms, such as lectures, student workshops, seminars, webinars and the student representative meetings, we encourage you to be part of these conversations, so that your voice is heard. We focus holistically on your development, and as a caring and student-centred Faculty we provide an inclusive and affirming environment and are accepting of all our students and staff. Respect and human dignity are key elements enshrined in the values of our Faculty and to be afforded to all students and staff, regardless of their social, economic, geographic, linguistic or cultural background, their gender identity or ability status. Your diversity contributes to the creativity, innovation, academic excellence, and research scholarship we pursue. We continuously place you at the heart of the learning and teaching programmes, research scholarship and international collaborations. Our academic staff works closely with industry, to ensure that the curriculum remains relevant, and aligns to the trends and skills required of you as a future graduate. We hope that your academic journey will continue beyond the undergraduate level, and that you pursue post-graduate studies and strive towards achieving your doctoral degree. The skills and knowledge you acquire will create opportunities for you nationally and internationally, thereby empowering and assisting you with employability, and enhancing your talents to become entrepreneurs or intrapreneurs on a global platform and being global citizens. To assist you in navigating your path to success, our FBMS Orientation Programme has been designed to assist you in adjusting to university life, and providing you with key information and support, as it pertains to your programme of study, student life, cultural and sporting activities. As you continue on your academic journey, class representatives, tutors, mentors, teaching assistants, together with student counselling, the disability unit and various internal and external partners are here to assist you in reaching your potential. As you work towards achieving your vision, always be guided by your principles, morals, values and ethics, and remain focused on achieving your goals in life. As you succeed, ensure that
you pay it forward and empower your peers and the community, and that you encompass the philosophy of Ubuntu. Surround yourself with positive influencers on campus and in your personal life, and this will require that you make decisions based on doing the right thing and acting ethically. Your lecturers, the administrative staff, the Heads of Department and the Faculty Office are available to assist, should you require, however, you need to take responsibility for your learning and to be accountable for your actions and the decisions you make. As we celebrated with Banyana Banyana when they won the FIFA soccer world cup, and the Springboks as they won the rugby world cup, they worked as team, and they were #StrongerTogether. We want to invite you to be part of our diverse and dynamic team and so too can we be #StrongerTogether. As we celebrate our numerous achievements over the years academically, in industry locally and globally, we nevertheless want to continue to pursue academic excellence through innovation and research, and are extending a personal invitation to you to be part of the journey and partner with us, the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences, in making history. We look forward to welcoming you in face-to-face classes in 2024 and wish you much success with your studies. Professor Paul Green Dean of the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences
