THE AFRICAN PENGUIN:MAKING A DIFFERENCE MARINE DYNAMICS PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN CONSERVATION EFFORTS OF THE AFRICAN PENGUIN. The African penguin is on the brink of extinction. If the population numbers continue to plummet at the same alarming rate, they are destined to become functionally extinct by 2030. Staff and guests of Marine Dynamics Shark & Whale Tours together with the Dyer Island Conservation Trust recently joinied the biggest-ever worldwide waddle and penguin protest march, as part of the #NotOnOurWatch African penguin survival campaign.

DYER ISLAND CONSERVATION TRUST: “FOR US, EVER DAY IS AFRICAN PENGUIN AWARENESS DAY” African penguins have always been a part of our conservation efforts through Dyer Island Conservation Trust. They have been working to rescue the species for a long time, and now need to ensure that everybody understands how close we are to losing this iconic species from our seascape. In the early 1900s, it is estimated there were between 1.5 million breeding pairs of African penguins across the species’ range along the Namibian and South African coast. Since 1979, when the first full count of the major South African colonies was conducted, the breeding population has declined from 55,200 pairs to a mere 10,000 breeding pairs in 2021. The endemic African penguins, found only in South African and Namibia, are faced with multiple pressures that are cumulatively contributing to their decline. Historically, eggharvesting and guano collection caused their colonies to shrink. But the more recent decline has been attributed to food shortages caused by shifts in the distributions of their prey species, namely a significant drop in the numbers of anchovies and sardines in the sea and direct competition with fisheries for food. “If we want our children to see African penguins in the wild, the time for action is now. If we wait, it will be too late says Wilfred Chivell, CEO of Marine Dynamics and Chairman of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust. +27 (0) 79 9309 694 Email: sharks@marinedynamicstravel.com
