TITLE: TOWARDS EFFECTIVE LOCAL GOVERNMENT ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SERVICES: A POLICY IMPACT ANALYSIS APPROACH This research study emphasises the critical role of environmental health services (EHSs) in safeguarding South Africa’s population from environmental health risks. Subpar municipal service delivery results in unmet expectations, community protests, and legal actions against municipalities. The study introduced a policy impact analysis tool, the revised ADEPT model, that should enable the government to identify systemic issues hindering the delivery of preventive EHSs. A conceptual framework emerged, emphasising officials’ awareness of their responsibilities and adherence to criteria, with appropriate leadership support, to satisfy the community’s needs. By comparing policy intent to implementation, the ADEPT model exposes systemic deficiencies in municipal service delivery.

TITLE: THE INFLUENCE OF ORGANISATIONAL POLICIES ON OFFICE ADMINISTRATORS’ ETHICS IN A SELECTED FINANCIAL SERVICES COMPANY IN SOUTH AFRICA Mario’s study focused on exploring the alignment between individual ethical values and organisational policies and the value systems embedded within decision-making processes in the financial services industry. The study assumes that financial services administrators are often the first people blamed for ethical indiscretions within the financial services industry. The study argued that the ethical dilemma of organisations is finding congruence between organisational codes of ethics, policies, individual ethics, and decision-making. As an exploratory study that used empirical evidence derived from 220 questionnaires as the primary measuring tool from a 45% response rate, quantitative data was collected from a structured questionnaire, resulting in qualitative interpretations. The main findings exposed the notion that ethical codes of conduct or policies direct the behaviour of employees. The study’s outcome illuminates the fact that structure impacts how organisational policies influence office administrator ethics in decision-making.

TITLE: NEW-AGE TOURISM STUDENTS’ LEARNING PREFERENCES AND IMPLICATIONS FOR TOURISM EDUCATION AT UNIVERSITIES OF TECHNOLOGY The research explored the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic on service industry qualifications at institutions of higher learning in South Africa. Using an explanatory-sequential design, the study involved the collection of 147 online surveys, and conducted focus group interviews with eight participants drawn from three universities of technology. Data revealed disparities between students’ actual experiences and the factors perceived as critical by educational leaders during the implementation of blended/hybrid learning. The study identified adverse effects on students’ mental well-being, further amplifying the existing disparities in access to and success in higher education. The research proposes a student-centred framework, serving as guidelines that can be integrated with COVID-19 emergency implementation plans to shape the development of future service industry qualifications.

TITLE: THE INTEGRATION OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES INTO MAINSTREAM EMPLOYMENT: A MODEL FOR PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS Warren’s doctoral study is an empirical investigation of the need to improve the integration of people with disabilities (PWDs) in mainstream employment. This study developed a model for the employment of PWDs at a Provincial Government Department in the Western Cape that is expected to aid the transformation imperative of the post-apartheid South African society which is inclusive, fair and accommodative to all. A case study of a typical department in the Western Cape provincial government was selected for the study where in-depth and context-rich interviews were conducted with top managers. Evidence was found that discrimination and negative attitudes towards PWDs still exist and the environment has not improved sufficiently for the realisation of targets for their integration into mainstream employment. The study’s findings indicated the presence of organisational, managerial, societal, and institutional factors affecting the integration of PWDs into mainstream employment.

TITLE: A VIRTUAL REALITY LEARNING FRAMEWORK FOR IMPROVING ENGAGEMENT AT A SELECTED TERTIARY INSTITUTION, CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA Martha (Maritsa), driven by the quest to uncover the nexus between the absence of Virtual Reality (VR) in training and diminished student engagement, for this study employed a qualitative methodology, integrating questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and a true experiment with a cohort of 37 participants. The results illuminate a transformative 180% increase in student engagement levels, accompanied by a commendable 23% elevation in pass rates for those immersed in VR learning. Additionally, teaching in the VR realm proved to be 40% more time-efficient than traditional distance online learning. Maritsa’s work signifies a paradigm shift, demonstrating that VR-enhanced learning not only fosters heightened engagement and academic success, but also empowers educators with streamlined teaching approaches. This research serves as a compass, guiding Higher Education Institutions in the strategic implementation of VR for an enriched educational experience.

TITLE: A MODEL FOR EFFECTIVELY EVALUATING AND MONITORING PRIMARY HEALTH CARE SERVICES DELIVERY IN THE METRO DISTRICT AT THE WESTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA The successful implementation of primary health care (PHC) in South Africa has never yet been achieved. Data, involving a total of 3,200 clinicians, were analysed and the findings exposed significant gaps in existing PHC service delivery models. A primary recommendation involved shifting to prevention, with more people delivering early intervention rather than being involved in interventions for acute illness. Evidence of PHC delivery models across different countries also indicated the importance of successful provision of e-services involving an enhanced primary care team; a multi-disciplinary approach; enhanced medical record keeping; and the significance of computer decision support systems and tools. This all suggests the feasibility of a service that can help achieve effective universal primary health coverage within South Africa.

TITLE: THE MISSING CURRICULUM: PREPARING ENGLISH HOME LANGUAGE TEACHERS FOR THE PRACTICE OF ASSESSMENT The purpose of this study was to explore pre-service teachers’ implementation of assessment of language in primary schools. The study draws on Legitimation Code Theory’s Semantics dimension to identify gaps between theory and practice. More collaboration is needed between HEIs and the Department of Basic Education to link conceptual and contextual assessment knowledge. Called the “missing curriculum” in discussions with lecturers and education officials, the researcher sought to bridge the gap between teacher training and the education system. Semantic gravity laid the groundwork for identifying practical versus theoretical assessment knowledge; both are deemed necessary for implementing successful assessment practices.

TITLE: OPTIMISATION OF A HIGH-DENSITY SLUDGE PROCESS FOR MAXIMUM VALUE RECOVERY Mr Folifac adopted a sustainable development approach and demonstrated the use of high-density sludge acid mine drainage (AMD) as a resource for the synthesis of iron nanoparticles using an eco-friendly reductant. The synthesised iron nanoparticles were then compared with those synthesised using chemicals. The study also investigated the quantity of lime needed to neutralize the resulting supernatant after iron removal from AMD. The candidate shows that some plant-based materials with high antioxidant capacity could be used to maximise the recovery of iron nanoparticles from AMD and that less lime is needed to neutralize the resultant supernatant prior to release to the environment.

TITLE: SAND BASED SYSTEM FOR PHYSIOCHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT OF WINERY WASTEWATER Gareth’s doctoral work reports on the feasibility of using biosand reactors to remediate winery water for irrigation purposes. The reactors fill a niche requirement for systems that have low capex and running costs with minimal energy and maintenance requirements and can adapt to variable input fluxes. The hydraulic capacity of the reactors was increased without any loss in remediation rates by using fractionated sand. Another novel design feature allowed the hydraulic retention time to be adjusted according to seasonal influent requirements. The systems achieved high organic removal rates over a variety of loading rates, and acidic winery wastewater was neutralized mainly via dissolution of the mineral, calcite in the sand. Gareth proposed a zero-waste model for treatment of winery wastewater which included wastewater reuse, anaerobic digestion of primary winery wastewater sludge, and use of the digestate as an agricultural fertilizer. This work has been published in six international journals and presented at two international and one local conference.

TITLE: DEVELOPMENT OF A REAL-TIME TEST BED FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY INTEGRATION STUDIES As part of the solutions to South Africa’s ongoing electricity supply crises, the country plans to increase renewable energy use significantly. Successfully integrating renewable generation into an already strained electrical grid is, however, bound to be challenging. In support of South Africa’s planned renewable energy integration success, a novel South African grid code tailored real-time testbed was developed, which, through active grid code voltage and frequency guided RPP control, allows grid code-imposed strains, support abilities and grid-connected behaviour of renewable generation to be studied. This development is essential, as the successful integration of planned renewable generation in South Africa can potentially solve the country’s ongoing electricity supply challenges.

TITLE: DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF THE CYBERSECURITY RISK TOOL: A CASE OF SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED ENTERPRISES IN SOUTH AFRICA The increased dependency on the cyberspace exposed all institutions to a range of cyber threats. This study identified the common cyber-attacks, and crimes which the sector is vulnerable to, as well as the mitigation strategies used. The research used the AgenaRisk package with artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities using Bayesian network tools to predict the risk likelihood and the risk impact. The work used the analytical techniques to perform sensitivity analysis, scenario analysis, Tornado graphs, decision trees, and expected monetary value. In addition, the relevance of the NIST framework was used to align with the existing cybersecurity controls to improve the overall cybersecurity.

TITLE: DEVELOPMENT OF MICRO-NUCLEAR GENERATORS FOR AUTONOMOUS SYSTEMS There is a growing interest in reliable and low-cost power sources for commercial and industry applications, especially autonomous systems. Energy sources derived from waste heat from industrial equipment and sites could help alleviate climate change effects. The waste heat, harvested via thermoelectricity from a nuclear source was designed and modelled using the MATLAB/Simulink environment and showed promising results. This energy source as a type of micro nuclear generator opens the door to novel applications. Several publications emanated from this research.

TITLE: HUB RATIO OF HORIZONTAL AXIS WIND TURBINE ROTORS FOR OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE Wind turbines have been manufactured and conceptualised with a wide range of hub ratios. The performance versus hub ratio relationship had not been established in published research, therefore this was the primary research output. Existing theory for turbine design and performance prediction excluded the true impact of hub size, therefore extending the existing theory was an essential secondary output which is now published in the international journal, Wind Engineering. A third research output was the development of a novel, low-cost, compact apparatus for performance-testing of model wind turbine rotors, which will be of interest to researchers in industry and academia.

TITLE: THE LEVEL OF ALIGNMENT BETWEEN THE USE OF IMPLEMENTED HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES (HITs) AND THE CLINICAL WORK ACTIVITIES OF NURSES IN THE PUBLIC HOSPITALS OF CAPE TOWN Faeda Mohsam’s study considered the lived experiences of nurses using digital technologies as part of their care practices. Although such technologies are already embedded in their work practices, not enough is done to address their in-situ needs towards infused use of digital health technologies. She positioned her interdisciplinary study in the nexus of health and social sciences and informatics. The researcher adopted an interpretive stance, and a qualitative phenomenological approach to explore the lived experiences of nurses. In addition, the normalised process theory was also used to gain deeper insights. The data was collected from two hospitals in the Western Cape province in high-pressure environments. Although the design-reality gap has been studied extensively in ICT for development studies, it has not yet been studied from a lived experience perspective in hospitals. The in-situ contextual findings could contribute towards the provision of improved healthcare services by hospitals in the African and Global contexts. The study is aligned to the Human, Health and Social Dynamics, Including Issues Related to Service Delivery focus area of CPUT and Sustainable Development Goal three to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. The findings of her study have the potential to unpack the role of healthcare professionals in new developments that incorporate artificial intelligence.

TITLE: A METRIC MODEL FOR MEASURING THE VALUE OF ENTERPRISE ARCHITECTURE IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES Governments of countries have not been able to deploy enterprise architecture (EA), to the point of institutionalisation because there is no reference guide. This leaves a gap from an information technology perspective. With a focus on improving delivery by governments, Monica Nehemia developed an EA metrics model (EAMM), guided by the complementarity of activity theory (AT) and structuration theory (ST). The main contribution of the study is its originality, which comes from the EAMM. This is the first EA metrics model, at both national and international levels. Also, the study contributes to the use and advancement of AT and ST for Information Systems studies.
