Part 2: Misinformation Regarding Human Sexuality Ask The UMC, is answering an increasing number of questions from congregations wondering about the future of The United Methodist Church and whether they should consider disaffiliating from it. Among these have been some recurrent questions that reflect misperceptions or misinformation that some congregations are receiving as they are discerning their next steps. Scholarship Recipient Shares His Gratitude Too often, we donate to worthy causes and never see the outcome of our donation. Did our gift benefit anyone? Was anyone authentically helped? United Methodist Student Day One of the major challenges students face is the lack of financial support to attain a college education. The United Methodist Student Day offering helps Methodist students accomplish their higher education goals. Observed this year on Sunday, November 27, United Methodist Student Day supports graduate and undergraduate students who are poised to become the next generation of leadership in the world and church. Last year, an offering of $272,159 was received. Your congregation can be the support a student needs as they prepare for a life of Christian service. What Works: Fall Outreach Events The end of October presents a great opportunity for United Methodist Churches to connect with families and communities. Entertaining and engaging fall events provide fun for the whole family and allows people who are not part of the congregation to learn more about ministries their local churches provide. Mississippi Conference News Pastor Appreciation Month In October, churches celebrate pastors and clergy who watch over their souls. Established as a worldwide recognition time in 1992, the call to honor the contributions of pastoral leaders can be traced back to Paul, who advised congregations to give “double honor” to the elders who managed the affairs of the church. Mississippi Conference Trustees Disaffiliation Decision There is much concern around churches feeling rushed to pursue the exploration process to disaffiliate due to next year’s deadline to do so by December 31, 2023 as stated in the sunset clause of paragraph 2553 (disaffiliation of a local church over issue related to human sexuality) in The Book of Discipline. The Mississippi Conference Board of Trustees has created a new plan outlining a fair and equitable way for Mississippi churches to depart after the December 31, 2023, cut-off date, beginning January 1, 2024 and continuing to the last day of the 2025 Session of the Mississippi Annual Conference. Connection Conversations Webinar In response to the 2022 annual conference petition that was approved by the membership (page 145, Call for Vital Relational Conversations Among the Leadership and Churches of the Mississippi Annual Conference), the Mississippi Conference Delegation hosted a webinar entitled, “Important Connection Conversations in the Mississippi Annual Conference.” To view the recording of the webinar, click here.
October District Realignment Task Force Update As reported during the 2022 Session of the Mississippi Annual Conference, the District Realignment Task Force prioritizes regularly updating the conference on findings, data and insights that come out of the task force’s meetings. Since August 2021, this group has met monthly to study and reflect upon the work of assessing the effectiveness of the current conference structure. The group envisions making its initial recommendations by November 30, 2022, for consideration at the 2023 session of the annual conference next summer. Mission Grants Available Looking to strengthen or start a ministry for which you have a vision but limited resources? Consider applying for the 2022 Connectional Ministries Mission Grants. These matching grants, available to United Methodist churches, typically range from $250 to $2,500 per project. Extraordinary applications for up to $5,000 will be considered. Online applications will be accepted until October 31, 2022. Click here to apply. Only applications submitted online will be considered.

Methodist Children’s Homes seeks to bring restoration to children and youth who have been neglected or abused and has cared for more than 11,000 children since it began in 1896.
