More than just a care home The Chiswick Nursing Centre is friendly and welcoming, providing the kindest possible care in a wonderfully comfortable setting. Our residents are given peace of mind, support and clinical care by our qualified, friendly staff. Families and loved ones have the comfort of knowing that our compassionate approach helps our residents feel safe and looked after in even the most difficult of situations. Whether it’s respite, rehabilitation, convalescence, longer term nursing, dementia care or physiotherapy, rest assured that you or your loved ones are in safe hands.

My sister (86) was admitted to this home during the virus crisis. She was very frail. The staff have been so caring and compassionate. When we were worried about her the manager spoke with my brother and I and arranged a video visit! My sister told us the carers were so kind and that the food was wonderful. The staff meet her every need and she feels that nothing is too much trouble for them. There are doctors, nurses and physiotherapists who help her daily. This home was a lucky find in a time of need. Chiswick woman enters Miss England contest by Rachel Magee

A local Chiswick woman has entered the Miss England contest to raise money for a domestic abuse charity.

A

nglee Kumar, 25, is a paralegal at Gazelle Global Consulting in Chiswick Business Park and entered the Miss England contest late after googling ‘how to raise money for charity’ and coming across the contest as a good way to do it.

is a platform and to use the platform to raise money for domestic abuse charities and other charities. When you have a platform that’s when people are more eager to listen. “That's why I really entered the contest to get a platform where I can speak my voice because I have a lot to say.”

Anglee is part of the Miss All African Colours heat, for which she won the voting round. Anglee said she was confused when she was entered in this heat as she is Indian but the contest organisers explained to her that this new heat is for people of all backgrounds and the aim of its creation was to promote diversity within the contest.

She added that she wanted to fundraise for Refuge because the rise in domestic abuse cases over lockdown worried her. She said: “Even in their own home and in their own space, some people don't feel safe. I think that's unfair and it's unnecessary. Why should any woman or child feel unsafe in their own environment?”

Before entering the contest, Anglee started a movement called the butterfly effect movement to raise money for Refuge, which is a charity that supports women and children suffering from domestic violence and abuse.

When asked about the common criticism of the pageant that it pits women against each other thereby adding to their objectification and how that was at odds with her goal of empowering women, Anglee said that that raising money for charity is what’s important with the contest.

Refuge started when it opened the world’s first safe house for women and children escaping domestic violence in Chiswick in 1971. It has since become one of the UK’s leading charities supporting victims of domestic abuse. Anglee’s JustGiving page has raised £1,800 so far for Refuge and she is also making facemasks with the ‘butterfly effect movement’ on them and selling them for £5 with all proceeds going to the charity.

She said: “When you actually research and read up about the Miss England contest, it's more about doing good for different charities that you feel passionate about. “Everyone is in competition for their own reasons. But I think most of the people entered to raise money for charity. That is why I entered.

Anglee said she started the butterfly effect movement because she wants all women to feel empowered. She said: “What I was hoping to get from the Miss England contest

“At the end of the day, a lot of good work has been put in and it will actually make a difference in someone's life. That's what matters most.”

Local charity helps people with Parkinson's through dance by Rachel Magee

A local charity uses dance as a therapeutic tool to help people with Parkinson's disease and other neurological or mobility issues.

M

ove Into Wellbeing offers dance classes which aim to let people experience the benefits that dance has on developing better balance and coordination and on improving self-confidence and general well-being. Before March 2020, the charity held classes in St Peter’s Church in Chiswick and in Danehurst Activity and Resource Centre in Brentford but classes have now moved online. Founder and director of Move Into Wellbeing, Donna Schoenherr, said that her inspiration for starting the charity came from seeing her father suffer from Parkinson’s disease for over 30 years. Donna said: “I saw that disease deteriorate him over a slow and very painful series of three decades. I was a professional dancer and so I knew about the work that was going on in a therapeutic way with dance to help people with different mobility and neurological issues. “The purpose behind setting up Move Into Wellbeing was to provide some sort of relief and joy for people who were dealing with this horrible thing, which I knew first-hand what it was all about.” The classes start with some socialising where class attendees and the dance teachers have a chance to chat and get settled in. There is then a health and safety check before the class starts with a gentle warm-up. The classes cater to all abilities giving manageable dance moves for those who are very physically impaired and encouraging those who can do more to elaborate on their 10

moves. There is always an adapted version to the dance routines for those who can not do all the elements. Each class has a teacher, assistant teachers and volunteer safety monitors that check everyone is doing okay. Since moving on to zoom, more people from across the country and across the world have joined the classes. The charity also offers a Google classroom to those signed up with them offering a library of classes and other exercises which can be accessed at any time of the day. Donna said that if someone was curious to try a class, all they have to do is email info@moveintowellbeing.org.uk or send the charity their phone number for a chat. She added that those unfamiliar with using zoom can ask for help and the charity will talk them through the basics. The first class is free and then it is usually £8 per class or you can buy bundles of classes for less per class. The charity also offers a concession rate. Donna said that that as well as offering physical benefits, the charity aims to offer a friendly and supportive community to those who attend the classes. She added that she enjoys seeing people in the class improve, saying: “it's incredibly fulfilling and joyful to see someone improve. We've had people come in on their walker and leave class without their walker because they just forgot they had one because they start to get stronger and more confident. And others come out of their shell and start to laugh and smile more.”

The Italians Much loved deli and pizzeria on Chiswick High Road, The Italians, has been serving the local neighbourhood everyday throughout the course of the pandemic.

S

ince the announcement of a lockdown in March 2020, local business owner Massimo Lopez made the decision to stay open and serve his community, ensuring they had essential supplies for everyone. This small, independent business has grown from strength to strength and shows no sign of slowing down.

Through rain or shine you can often find a queue of hungry locals eagerly waiting outside to go in and peruse the latest seasonal produce or daily changing lunch menu while sipping on a coffee. The deli offers an ever evolving array of fantastic produce including seasonal fruits and vegetables, yogurts and fresh pasta. A concise selection of dry store essentials including dried pasta, grains, cereals and their much coveted Italians flour are always in stock as well as top quality canned and jarred sauces as well as preserves.

With a strong focus on artisanal, family run producers The Italians pride themselves on only retailing Italian produce of the highest provenance and quality. They currently retail a whopping 70 varieties of cheese and charcuterie from all regions of Italy as well as offering a selection of breads. From rustic sourdoughs to pillowy focaccias, absolutely everything is baked in-house everyday using the finest heritage Italian flours and lievito madre - an Italian sourdough starter.

Stand out grocery producers include Barlotti a century old buffalo farm based in a UNESCO heritage site that produces some of the finest buffalo mozzarella, ricotta and butter, Sant’Ilario - award winning and renowned producers of prosciutto, and Fratepietro - a 5th generation olive farm famed for growing the enormous Cerignola olives.

Originally from Calabria, and a proud West London resident of many years himself, Massimo speaks passionately about how important one's local community is and about how grateful he is for the support he has received over the past year from his customers, in fact he says that one of his favourite things about his job is getting to interact with his customers on a daily basis and that he looks forward to being able to do this more freely again soon.

Wines on offer are bought directly from independent Italian producers and are curated with the help of their in house sommelier. Bottles range from entry level everyday wines to exciting rare vintages and magnums. Customer favourites include Dolcetto di Dogliani PapĂ Celso by the family run Marziano Abbona, and bottles by Zuani, a winery based in the high Collio hills north of Venice are always in high demand.

Since its opening in 2016, The Italians has truly become a hub of the community.

In December 2020, Massimo and the team launched their second venture in London, a specialist wine shop and deli - also named The Italians - in the heart of Marylebone Village. This sister venture comes ahead of the official launch of their planned wine bar and bistro which in light of the new restrictions will now open later this year. The new opening places a strong focus on fine wine boasting an exceptional library of rare bottles and prestigious labels including Super Tuscans such as Tenuta Masseto. They are currently retailing a concise selection of top quality cured meats, cheeses, and fresh breads that arrive from the Chiswick bakery daily. The much anticipated wine bar will also offer a considered menu of antipasti platters, Italian small plates and salads. Massimo comments that he has been interested in expanding The Italians for some time and has been looking for the perfect area to do so, somewhere that also had a local and community feel to it. He and the team are very excited to have found a second home in Marylebone Village and hopes to welcome some familiar Chiswick faces in for a glass of wine in the not too distant future. We certainly can’t wait for the opening too. Launching this month are “The Italians At Home Pizza Kits. Customers are able to choose from a selection of four different kits which come with all of the ingredients to bake their favourite pizzas at home. Flavours include Mortaza - burrata, mortadella and pistachio pesto, Calabrese - spicy salami with grilled aubergine, Prosciutto & Funghi - San Daniele ham with mushroom, and of course the ultimate crowd pleaser a Margherita. 16

Meet the Artist by Lucy Bacon

Lucy Bacon chats to local artist Sangeeta Weatherley

I

first discovered Sangeeta Weatherley’s art through her Instagram page where she posts pictures of her beautiful paintings and collages which with their vibrant colors and elegant lines are highly striking.

viewed her paintings as a hobby and did not think they were up to a professional standard. Growing up in India she felt that art was not something that she could do professionally and so instead she went to work in IT. It was only in the last year that she has started to identify herself as an artist. Her change in heart came after she went to an exhibition and realised her work was as good as the artist she was seeing and that all she lacked was confidence. Sangeeta explains, “I came to realise that I just had to believe in myself. There is no such thing as bad art, there is only art which you have not pushed far enough. Looking back at my old art most of it was only one step away from being good.”

Due to social distancing we arranged to have an interview over Facetime. Sangeeta is exceptionally cheerful at the start of the interview; she has just seen a girlfriend for the first time in three months and been able to have a good chat and gossip. We started off talking about how speaking over Zoom is not the same as meeting in person and how tired we are of quizzes. But, for Sangeeta Zoom has also provided her with a new creative outlet. During calls she has started to do Zoom Doodles, where she quickly sketches people as they appear on her screen. She shows me two of the doodles, one of a moving depiction of a mother daughter pair discussing Black Lives Matter and another of an energetic DJ hosting a Zoom party.

In the last year Sangeeta has held two exhibitions on the Goldhawk Road and taken part in the virtual Artists at Home in June. It is through her art that Sangeeta has been able to connect with the Chiswick community. When she first moved here, eight years ago from India, she found it hard to meet people and form a relationship with the community. But through her artwork she has met new people who enjoy art and who support artists in the local community.

Sangeeta has found lockdown to be a highly creative time, along with her doodles, she has been creating a series of paintings depicting The Lockdown Woman. The series depicts a faceless woman alone in her garden in different poses. Sangeeta says that for her, “Nature has always been a huge inspiration! When I see something beautiful, I always try to capture it.”

Sangeeta’s greatest ambition is to create art that ‘brings people together’ and to do this she has started to teach workshops which are open to people of all ages and all abilities. “I have never had any formal training in art and have always picked things up as I went along. I know how small people can be made to feel when they do not have a professional qualification. In my workshops I just want people to have fun and be inspired. “Ultimately, I just want us to fill Chiswick with beautiful vibrant paintings!”

Sangeeta decided to depict The Lockdown Woman because she has been inspired by all the innovative women she has encountered in her life and she shows her awe and admiration for them through her art. Laughing she says, “Men haven’t made it to my paintings yet, they will have to work on that.” The Lockdown Woman has a special meaning to Sangeeta because she has recycled her old art to form the woman. For a long time, Sangeeta only

Swedish Lapland The Ice and Light Village by Áine McGinty

Stay in an Arctic bubble cabin - Thought to be the world’s first Arctic cabin contained inside a huge clear igloo bubble

T

he Ice & Light Village can be found near the Arctic Circle on the banks of the Kalix River in Swedish Lapland. The cosy relaxing cabins have been built to offer guests the perfect setting from which to experience Arctic nature as the windows in the walls and roof allow guest to connect with the wilderness around them. The whole cabin, including an outside area, has then been contained inside a huge, heated bubble keeping guests cosy and safe within their own Arctic ‘snow globe’.

restaurants, including one owned by a former Swedish master chef finalist, allow guests to experience local cuisine at its best. Each of the five Ice & Light bubble cabins have been decorated with images from local photographer Lennart Åström who captured the region across different seasons from the frozen snowy winter to the abundant forests and nature of summer. Each cabin sleeps two people and includes an open plan sleeping and sitting area and bathroom, all designed and created with an unmistakable Scandinavian design, complete with roof and wall windows flooding light into the cabin.

The Ice & Light village is the brainchild of Maarit Lindvall who started developing the project three years ago alongside her niece, Emma Strömberg, an architect from Gothenburg, who designed and built the first ever Ice & Light cabin.

“We wanted our guests stay to not only be able to experience the wilderness, but also create a stay that was environmentally friendly,” adds Maarit. “Not only does the bubble add another layer of protection from the Arctic weather, but each cabin is entirely self-contained, just requiring electricity for heat and light, completely reducing its impact on the local ecosystem.”

Maarit said; “We really wanted to create the best private cosy and relaxing space for anybody wanting to connect with Arctic nature, but not lose any of the home comforts and atmosphere you get from a Scandinavian Arctic lodge. Once we had the self-contained cabin designed we wanted to wrap the whole unit in a huge clear slightly heated bubble adding to the comfort of our guests and allowing them to sit comfortably outside their cabin in the Arctic nature warm and comfortable searching for wildlife, and of course the Northern Lights.”

A stay at the Ice & Light Village in Kalix is available all year around and this winter will cost from 1690 SEK (the equivalent of £150) for a two-person cabin. This includes a night in the bubble cabin with a twin or double bed, hot water a private bathroom, coffee and tea, breakfast and use of kick sleds. Rental of ice fishing equipment, snowshoeing, x-country skis and additional activities as husky tours, snow mobile and icebreaker tour are available at an additional cost. It is recommended that guests fly into Lulea from which it is a 1-hour drive to Kalix and the Ice & Light Village.

The modern and unique accommodation are completely self-contained and can be moved to the perfect spot for guests to experience Arctic nature. This winter they will be housed on the banks of the Kalix River which freezes and provides the perfect spot for wildlife watching and Northern Lights hunting.

Packed Hammersmith Riverfront an "Incredible Risk" for Covid-19

of the lockdown, protect our NHS, save businesses and jobs, and save lives is stay home.” While Cllr Steve Curran, Leader of Hounslow Council, said: "With the 49 deaths in Hounslow from Covid-19 in December already exceeded in January, it beggars belief that people are still taking these incredible risks and congregating in areas such as these. "I am appealing to people, for the sake of those they love and for their own wellbeing, to stay away from this area of the river, and to follow the National Lockdown rules. Stay at Home, Save Lives, Protect the NHS.” And Matt Twist, Deputy Assistant Commissioner from the Met Police, said: "Our health service colleagues are fighting this virus every day on the frontline – but the case rate continues to increase, and the number of people affected in London is alarming. Now more than ever is the moment for people to stick to the rules and stay at home.” Covid marshals are patrolling the riverfront in Hammersmith & Fulham and will continue to ask joggers and cyclists to use alternative routes for their daily exercise between the hours of 10am and 4pm. This weekend, markings will be laid to help maintain distancing along this stretch. Residents have also been asked to take their daily exercise with caution and stay local at one of our 60 parks and open spaces. For more details about your local park or open space, visit: www.lbhf.gov.uk/parks.

The Met Police joined Hammersmith & Fulham and Hounslow councils in urging local residents to avoid the busy riverfront to help stop the spread of Covid-19.

T

he stretch of riverfront running from Chiswick Mall to Hammersmith Mall and down to Bishop’s Park in Fulham is extremely busy – especially at weekends. Thee large number of people congregating in these small, congested paths vastly increase the risk of transmitting the virus. With 1 in 3 infected people displaying no symptoms, Covid-19 is a real threat to the public. "The new strain of Covid is 70 per cent more contagious than the first. And London is an epicentre of the bigger second wave that is taking our NHS to breaking point,” said Cllr Stephen Cowan, Leader of the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham. "If people have to go outside for an essential reason, we’re asking them to please wear a mask when near anybody else and to always avoid all busy areas – particularly the riverfront. "The disease is rapidly spreading throughout London’s population at an exponential rate, and largely, by people who are asymptomatic. The vast majority of people are doing the right thing and being considerate of others and I’m grateful for that. "The best thing any of us can do to cut the length

restrictions on development such as solar panels, extensions, cladding, and satellite dishes. Protections also cover trees of sufficient size (stem diameters of 75mm or greater, measured at 1.5m above ground) and other points of interest. The Glebe Estate was built as affordable housing in the 1880s, although property prices in the area now routinely stretch over £1,000,000. The area covers mostly two-storey Victorian cottages, nestled between Duke Road, Devonshire Road, Glebe Street and Fraser Street. Its name comes from the land which was once part of the ‘glebe’-- better known as a church furlong, the area which once belonged to the church. A brief history of the Glebe Estate written by local historian Gillian Clegg was published by the Brentford and Chiswick Local History Society and can be read here.

A report recommending consultation on making the Glebe Estate in Chiswick into a conservation area is due to be presented to the Chiswick Area Forum on 12 January.

A Special Planning Team has recently embarked upon a programme of producing new conservation area appraisals (CAAs) for these areas. The consultation would take place from 18 January 2021 to 20 March 2021, and residents would be informed shortly afterwards by post. If the area received conservation area status, this would bring

Here, Helen Pidgeon, the director of Helen Pidgeon Solicitors, family law specialists in Chiswick, explains some common legal issues that crop up for separating parents. Here, Helen Pidgeon, the director of Helen Pidgeon Solicitors, family law specialists in Chiswick, explains some common legal issues that crop up for separating parents. If you have children, there are, along with the emotional and financial issues, the everyday practicalities to sort out; where the child or children will live, how much time they will spend with each parent and what each parent can legally do without involving the other.

Private organisations or state run Separated Parents Information Programme “SPIP” (Cafcass website has a directory) offer parenting group classes that you can attend together or alone. If the court becomes involved you could be ordered to attend a SPIP or similar parenting programme. Parenting Apps such as Our Family Wizard www.ourfamilywizard.co.uk and Parenting Apart divorceandchildren.com/divorce-app/ can provide neutral calendars to manage diary dates and the sharing of other co-parenting information.

You may not need to involve the court in these arrangements if everything can be agreed between you. If you need some assistance with these arrangements then start by looking into drawing up a parenting plan setting out clear principles and the arrangements for the children. These do not have to be set in stone and can be reviewed as the children grow up and their needs change, but they can provide a very useful framework and reference point. The Children and Family Court Advisory Support Service “Cafcass” who are the court appointed social workers, have provided some guidance on the issues to think about in its Parenting Plan which can be found on its website www.cafcass.gov.uk .

SHOULD THERE BE SHARED CARE?

If both parents work and are involved in the day to day care of the children, we are increasingly seeing parents who want to share the care of a child. There is a presumption that each parent, including the non-resident parent, should spend time with a child provided there is no risk of harm to the child. There is not a presumption of shared care. It will depend upon the circumstances for the care arrangements as to whether this can be facilitated and the kind of relationship the parents have after separating. Shared care doesn’t necessarily mean sharing the amount of time a child spends with each parent equally.

WHAT ARE YOUR PARENTAL RIGHTS?

As a mother you automatically have parental responsibility. As a father, you either have parental responsibility by being married to the mother before or after your child’s birth or, by being named as the father on the child’s birth certificate (for a child that has been born after 1 December 2003). Parental responsibility means you share equally “all the rights, duties, powers, responsibilities and authority which by law a parent of a child has in relation to the child and their property”. It is your status as a parent. You must consult with each other on the major decisions in your child’s life; such as schooling, health, education, religion, changing a child’s name and taking a child abroad for any time at all.

A court can make a shared care order as a way to avoid one parent trying to alienate or exercise too much control over the other. Neither is there a specific formula for shared care with alternating days or weeks. Any arrangement will depend on the practicalities and must be within the best interests of the child as their welfare is the key concern of the court. DO I NEED TO HAVE A PARENTING PLAN OR COURT ORDER?

It is not compulsory to have either if everything is agreed. If there have been difficulties in agreeing the past arrangements, a parenting plan setting out clear and agreed principles and defining the arrangements may help and as a last resort, if agreement cannot be reached, then an order drawn up with the help of family law specialists may help to prevent further difficulties in the future.

FINDING WAYS TO CONSULT WITH EACH OTHER

After a difficult separation, it’s not uncommon for some parents to still need help in putting a Parenting Plan together, either from a solicitor or a mediator. The exercise can be more productive if both parents are informed about their parental rights beforehand.

This article assumes you are the natural birth parents of a child and does not deal with the law on step-parents, same sex parents, surrogacy or adoption when the legal issues may differ and more specialist advice is required.

Mediators who are non-legal and legal professionals (Family Mediation Council www.familymediationcouncil.org.uk and Resolution: first for family law www.resolution.org.uk/ find_a_mediator) can offer assistance to both parents at the same time. Mediation can be done in several different ways to make each parent feel heard and supported. There can be “co-mediation” with two mediators or “shuttle” mediation with one mediator who travels between the rooms that you separately occupy. Many mediators are now conducting mediation safely and successfully using remote technology too.

This article is intended for general advice upon the law. If you require advice about your particular circumstances then you should seek your own independent legal advice about the approach you should take and how this will affect you. Helen Pidgeon is a solicitor, mediator and collaborative lawyer and director of Helen Pidgeon Solicitors specialising in private children law as well as all aspects of private family law matters. Please contact us if you require further assistance to help you decide what is right for you and your family.
