It’s your fault Hon Speaker!
“The council is in chaos and it’s your fault, Honourable Speaker!” This is the sentiment of all opposition parties in the Govan Mbeki Municipality. The problem with the current dysfunctionality started with an appalling decision that the Speaker made during the February Council Meeting. The Speaker of Govan Mbeki Council, Cllr Nhlakanipho Zuma (Zuma), ruled that an item that was withdrawn served before the Council and therefore there was a Council decision to withdraw the item. “To withdraw an item means that it is no longer serving,” said Cllr Thulani Maseko, Whip of the DA in GMM, “it therefore didn’t serve and no resolution could have been taken on the item. Zuma ruled that there was a decision taken. The decision taken,
according to Zuma, is to withdraw the motion.” The Standing Orders of Council dictates that no motion shall serve before the Council if it has the aim of changing a ruling or rescinding it in the preceding three months. Zuma therefore ruled that the Motion of No Confidence submitted by the DA falls within that period, it would therefore not serve at the Council. This decision has dire effects on items referred back to Council for amendment because that would mean that items referred back could not serve at Council again within a 3-month period. The Acts regulating the work of Council have also been blatantly ignored. The opposition parties decided to boycott council meetings as long as Zuma refuses to table the “Motion of
no Confidence.” The ANC has since resorted to all kinds of methods to persuade the G9 dissidents to join ranks within the ANC once again. The G9 has kicked against it and is persistent in keeping to their decision to boycott the Council Meetings after promises were made to them after last year’s violent strikes in eMbalenhle. The Speaker called for Special Council Meetings tabling other items and NOT the Motion of No Confidence. “The Speaker of the ANC led Govan Mbeki Council continues to refuse the Democratic Alliance and other opposition parties a voice in the council to present the Motion of No Confidence that has been submitted by the DA against the Executive Mayor of Govan Mbeki, Thandi Ngxonono, in January,” said Cllr Ciska Jordaan, Caucus leader of the DA in GMM. “The Democratic Alliance has walked out of the Special Council Meeting that took place on Friday, 15 March, after the Speaker had refused to table the motion that the opposition parties have been demanding since January.” “The manner in which the Council has been functioning, since the beginning of 2019, has been absolutely appalling and in fact disrespectful towards, not only the legislation that guides us, but also the South Africans in the communities that we serve.” The Speaker has also ignored numerous requests from opposition parties to have a Special Council Meeting to address the Motion of No Confidence. Zuma has used every possible excuse not to have the Special Council Meeting even citing that the words should be a perfect match before it will be discussed. The G9 submitted their own paper in support of the opposition parties. “The Speaker is not acting faithfully to all the prescripts that had been prescribed in this municipality. In all this time he is just driving his own interest and ensuring that he secures what the Mayoral Committee is trying to do,” said Cllr Thabiso Mofokeng, Whip of the EFF, “Their priority is to continue with all the corruption that are happening here. They want to pass the budget that we have never even seen. That is why we left the Council Meeting. This is all about corruption, they’re trying to protect themselves.” “Apart from the Motion of No Confidence, which did not serve on 31 of January, we have submitted not one, but 3 request letters from the majority of Council Members to the Speaker in line with the relevant legislation to convene an urgent Council Meeting for consideration of the motion – all of which were denied based on overly abstruse reasoning. Further to this, a second motion has been submitted to the office of the MM on 4 of February,
however an ordinary meeting had not been called so that the motion could serve.” Ciska continued, “The Speaker has consistently and repeatedly denied the DA as well as the other opposition parties the right to table this motion to the Council, freeing the Executive Mayor of all responsibility and accountability for the mess that she has made of this municipality.” “What is perhaps most hypocritical, is the warning that several councillors have received for protesting the previous 2 Special Council Meetings by boycotting them – citing the code of conduct for councillors and threatening to remove them from office should they not attend the following meeting that is intended to approve the adjustment budget. While the Speaker has not given care to any of the legislation related to removing the Executive Mayor and calling meetings as per the request of the majority of council, suddenly legislation would be evoked to threaten to remove councillors. It appears that legislation is only applied when it is convenient to the ANC. This only proves that the ANC would do anything in their power to protect the Mayor and her rotten Mayoral Committee at all cost, even at the cost of their own councillors and the survival of this fallen council.” “The Democratic Alliance does not intend to rest due to illogical threats and the will of the ANC to wish for the disappearance of the motion for removal of the Executive Mayor. Even the adjustment budget itself will not mean anything in the hands of Thandi Ngxonono and her cronies, who do not place any value in delivering services to the frustrated residents of Holfontein, Lebohang, Kinross, eMbalenhle, Bethal, Emzinoni, Secunda, Trichardt, Siphumelele and all the towns within Govan Mbeki.” Cllr Sibusiso Hlolweni from Sapromo was removed from the council meeting. “This budget does not talk to the needs of the people on the ground and we do not have a mayor that will ensure that he or she plays an oversight over the budget. We made it categorically clear that we don’t have a mayor,” Sibusiso said. Cllr Deon de Vries of the Freedom Front Plus stated, “We left the Council Meeting because the Speaker is not following the council rules that were agreed upon and is trying to push through the adjustment budget because of legislative requirements. The residents of Holfontein and Tweedraai communities, just outside of Trichardt, marched peacefully to the municipality on Friday, 8 March, demanding service delivery from the Executive Mayor. They handed over a memorandum to an official of Govan Mbeki Municipality. The residents asked for an answer within seven days. These seven days ended on Sunday. The residents wanted the Mayor to speak to them as she did not show up to receive the memorandum and she had to respond. The following demands were made on the memorandum. “You appointed Abdullam as a place you are going to relocate us to. You promised to give us feedback after you have spoken to Prince of Tides about the date in which they are going to start with the services and you said you held a meeting on 20 February and after you are going to give us feedback. Until today you did not give us feedback. We therefore still want to see the place.”
“You promised that there will be quarterly meetings with regards to our relocation, but you never came back.” “We have had enough of your empty promises. We have stayed for too long in this place without services. We want our promised land.” “We are afraid that we will not vote if our issues are not paid attention to.” Cllr Ciska Jordaan, Ward Councillor said that: “It is unsatisfactorily indicated that the municipality has no plans to supply temporary service delivery to these communities since they
will apparently be moving them to allocated land next to Adullam. However, shockingly, a site visit to the area has revealed an open field which had clearly not had any feet on it for quite some time, much less any kind of construction or slight indication of preparation for housing these communities.” The residents continued their protests on Monday and blocked the road to Syferfontein and Isibonelo mines. The police were present and arrested several people.
Hawks arrest suspect for alleged murder plot fabrication A suspect who caused a storm by alleging that Deputy President DD Mabuza was involved in an alleged conspiracy to murder a Mpumalanga businessman has been arrested. The 31-year old woman, who masqueraded as the Deputy President’s niece, was arrested on Wednesday for alleged fraud, forgery and defeating the ends of justice. She is expected to appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 15 January. The Hawks launched investigations last year November after the suspect made startling allegations in an affidavit that Deputy President Mabuza was, 5 November 2018, conspiring to murder an ecotourism business person. The alleged incident is purported to have happened in the police precinct of Sandton, which resulted in the opening of a criminal docket at Sandton Police Station. The investigation team needed to interview the complainant as the original statement was not recorded by the police. It became difficult to trace the complainant as those who interacted with her were also unable to locate her. It later became common cause that the Deputy President was not in the country at the time of the alleged offence. It became clear that the statement may not be truthful but
a possible fabrication, including her relationship with the Deputy President. An investigation team followed all leads including consultation with other government departments for verification. Based on the information obtained through section 205 of the Criminal Procedure Act of 1997 that compels custodians to provide the information, the real person whose details appeared in the affidavit was traced. It is also worth mentioning that the investigators became aware of the identity of the suspect and kept an eye on her while embarking on a search of the real person whose details were used in fabricating the affidavit. The investigation has also ascertained that huge amounts of money were paid to the deponent, co-incidentally, after deposing of the affidavit. An identification parade was held on Thursday 14 March and the persons to whom the suspect made a report, who happens to be employed by a political party, positively identified her. The suspect has further made a confession before the magistrate. She is currently in custody. The investigation, which is a systematic search for the truth, is continuing. The motive for deposing of this false statement has not yet been determined.

Evander Hospital hosted open day As the cold morning breeze blew in on Friday, 15 March, Evander Hospital had an open day. The day was to showcase the services available at the hospital and to inform the public that the hospital is one of the cleanest public hospitals around. The early morning breeze helped with all the setting up in the hot sun: tents were being erected, mobile clinics cleaned again and chairs and equipment were carried out and set in place. Some of the departments present on the day were: Mobile Clinics The Sasol and Provincial mobile clinics teams were onsite demonstrating their fleet that is used to service the surrounding communities. These units are manned by qualified nursing staff who are licensed to administer medication to the patients that attend these mobile clinics, these patients can also go for a routine check-up and be referred to hospital should the need arise. Generally, these vehicles go out to communities that cannot get transport to the local clinics or hospitals.

X-ray Department The X-ray department was also available to show the community exactly what they do at the Evander Hospital. They had various different literature on display to show how X-rays can be of benefit to the Doctors at both Casualties and the wards to aid in diagnosing an ailment. Outpatients Department “An outpatient department is the part of a hospital designed for the treatment of outpatients, people with health problems who visit the hospital for diagnosis or treatment, but do not at this time require a bed or to be admitted for overnight care” https:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outpatient_ clinic_(hospital_department). This department is best described by the above from Wikipedia. Casualties/Emergency Room The unit had on display some of its lifesaving equipment like a ventilator machine, ECG machine etc. While
talking to the staff of this unit they explained how they are under very heavy pressure on a daily basis. This unit of the Hospital is always busy and everyone wants to be helped immediately not realising that behind the door of the Resuscitation room (better known as Resus room) the staff are tirelessly trying to save a life. Maternity Ward This unit had on display the equipment that they use when delivering a baby. From the caesarean kit to a natural birthing all packed in sterile packs and the sterile cot the baby is put in after birth. Sisters were donned in their surgical scrubs so that the community could see how they are dressed to keep the theatre as sterile as possible. The sisters were also available to answer any questions that may have arisen on the day. Physiotherapy There was various different equipment on display at this stand. A
physiotherapist was also available to assist with any questions. The morning was opened with the National Anthem sung by the Evander Hospital Choir. The day was well attended and the MEC of Mpumalanga Department of Health, Hon. JS Manzini and the Nzuza Tribal Authority leader, Chief Ndabezitha PJ Mahlangu also attended the event and spoke to the community. – Ané Prinsloo

Okke Jager skryf “de dood is een huisgenoot, maar ook een inbreker.” Daar is baie waarheid in hierdie stelling. Oor meer as dertig jaar het ek gesien hoe terminaal siek mense, wat lank versorg is en baie siek is, se heengaan nogtans ‘n groot skok is, dikwels net so groot skok soos oor die persoon wat op ’n Maandagoggend blakend gesond opstaan, en dan iewers in ‘n noodlottige ongeluk sterf. Die meeste mense het al sulke skokke beleef in hulle gesinne, vriendekring of werksomgewing. ‘n Gemeente en gemeenskap word geskok wanneer dit gebeur. Die grens van menslike ervarings word beproef: seer, opstand, skok, verslaendheid en hartseer word intens beleef. Mens wonder of daar enige manier is om die skerpheid van die gebeure bietjie sagter te maak. Die hele proses van begrafnis hou is wel sinvol in die troosproses, alhoewel minder en minder mense deesdae begrawe word, en verassings meestal plaasvind, as gevolg die veiligheidkwessies en swak instandhouding van baie begraafplase onder andere. Ek het die afgelope week gekyk na huldeblyke van twee oud-lidmate uit twee van die gemeentes waar ek predikant was, wat oorlede is. Beide van hulle was gerespekteerde, gelowige mense wat die lewens van ‘n klomp ander aangeraak het deur hulle persoonlike lewe, asook die loopbane wat hulle beoefen het. Die Powerpointaanbieding wat tydens een begrafnisdiens gespeel is, wys die siklus van lewe, soos die Ou Testament dit beskryf. ‘n Swart en wit foto van ‘n baba, ‘n jong seun met ‘n skoolkleurbaadjie aan wat later ‘n groot man word en poseer met ‘n militêre uniform, wat trou en kinders kry, en met kleinkinders speel. ‘n Lewe, afgerond. Dit het my eensklaps weer laat nadink oor die sinvolheid van konvensionele begrafnisse. Op kweekskool is daar dikwels aan ons gesê dat jy nie vir die oorledene preek nie, maar vir die diegene wat agterbly. Ek het dit aanvanklik net so gedoen. Maar, is dit waar? Is al die mense in die kerk werklik ‘n onbereikte sendingveld wat eenmalig met die volle swaartekrag van die evangelie gegooi moet word, voordat hulle almal in die plek van vlamme beland? Is dit werklikwaar nodig dat troos vervang moet word met grafiese beskrywings van wat die gevolge van sonde kan wees? En die ander kant van die munt is ook: kan jy iemand in die hemel inpreek? ‘n Persoon wat ‘n onverskillige, ongelowige lewe gelei het? Wat nooit bekend was vir ‘n toegewyde lewe nie? ‘n Nuwe gedagte het hieroor
begin groei in my denke. Ek, en jy, is die skrywers van ons eie begrafnispreke. Ons bepaal self die tema van ons roudiens deur ons optrede teenoor elke mens met wie ons te doen kry: ons gesinslede, ons familie en vriende, ons kollegas, die vrou by SPAR agter die kasregister, die pompjoggie by die vulstasie. Ons impak op hulle bepaal hoe ons onthou gaan word. Ons lewens wys vir hulle hoe Jesus en die ewige lewe lyk. En dit strek wyer as ‘n duisend begrafnispreke. As ons interaksie met mense het, doen dit met die uitgangspunt: wat gaan jy van my sê as ek nie meer daar is nie? Hoe gaan jy my onthou? Ek speel nou met die idee: as my laaste klok lui, moet daar geen diens wees nie. Geen preek nie. Geen bombardement van tekste oor die hemel of hel nie. Ek hoef nie die kerk ingedra te word in my houtpak deur ses somber draers nie. Daar hoef
nie ‘n groot foto van my te wees toe ek dertig jaar oud was nie. Die ondernemer moet sy werk doen, en ongesiens afhandel. Ek weet waar ek vandaan kom, en ek weet waarheen ek gaan, soos Mathinus von Biberack geskryf het. Maar my reisgenote deur die lewe, my vriende oor dekades, kennisse, mense wat ek aangeraak het, waar ook al, hulle moet mekaar kontak en afspreek om bymekaar te kom. Meng die amasi en olie saam en voeg dit by die eiermengsel. Meng met die meelmengsel. 6. Voeg die res van die bestandele by en meng. 7. Skep die beslag in gesmeerde broodpanne en smeer gelyk bo-op. 8. Bak sowat 1 uur lank tot gaar. 9. Laat afkoel, sny in stukke en droog uit by 100 °C. Laat die oonddeur effens oop

Sasol Bursary Programme aims to help you harness your potential Sasol, the employer of choice in the chemical and energy sector, has announced that applications for its Corporate Bursary Programme is now open for the 2020 academic year. Learners are encouraged to apply as soon as possible as the closing date for applications is 30 April. High-performing mathematics and science learners currently in Grade 12 are invited to apply for the all-inclusive bursary to study engineering, science and accounting degrees at approved public universities and universities of technology. “It is important to note that grade 11 marks are used when applying for the bursaries,” said Monica Luwes, Manager of the Graduate Centre at Sasol, “it is the same marks that are used to apply for admission to university.” Sasol’s Bursary Programme — which has run for more than three decades — covers bursars’ tuition fees, accommodation, meals, textbooks and pocket money.

Bursars receive allowances for study tools such as laptops and calculators. Sasol bursars also have the opportunity to do paid vacation work and to be part of the Graduate Development Programme when they complete their studies. Sasol is looking for learners who want to study towards a B Eng or BSc Eng in various engineering disciplines, BSc Chemistry and Accounting (CA route) or learners interested in studying Instrumentation, Mining Survey and Mechanical or Electrical Engineering at a university of technology. Applicants need to obtain 70% for Maths, 70% for Science and 60% for English to be considered, this also coincides with the requirements for admission to university. “At Sasol, we help our bursars harness their potential, by offering them not only financing for their tertiary education, but also the opportunity to start and succeed in their

Mncedisi to cast stone in Russia

Gert Sibande TVET College, Skills Academy and Artisan Development Centre apprentice in Bricklaying, Mncedisi Mkhaliphi (22), won the National leg of the 3rd National World Skills Competition that was held in Durban International Convention Centre (ICC) on 22 – 25 February. He will be representing South Africa in the international leg of the Competition in Kazan, Russia on 22 27 August 2019. World Skills South Africa (WSSA) is an initiative that is championed by the Department of Higher Education and Training and was formally established in April 2013 by the Deputy Minister of the Department of Higher Education and Training. Mncedisi was born and bred in Fernie where he completed his primary and secondary school. He was raised by a single parent after his mother passed away while he was young. He is the 6th child out of 10 siblings. “My father was very strict and he was a firm believer in education,” alluded Mncedisi. Becoming a civil engineer has always been his dream. “I always wanted to do something related to civil engineering because I am an artistic person, I enjoy drawing. In civil engineering there are drawings of house plans and other structures. Studying civil engineering provides me with an opportunity to express myself artistically,” stated Mncedisi. He matriculated in 2014 and took a gap year due to the fact that he wanted to assist his father by providing for his family. “I later realised that I was making a mistake because I will not be able to provide for them without proper education,” he continued.
In 2016, he enrolled for civil engineering at Ermelo Campus through the assistance of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). “I decided to join a TVET College because of the fact that it provides a lot of opportunities in terms of financial assistance as compared to a University,” alluded Mncedisi. He made the choice to join a TVET College even though people kept saying that TVET Colleges are for people who are not bright. He completed his qualification in 2017 and he was faced with the realities of unemployment. “I got a job at a local retail shop. I went to my lectures at the campus to inform them because I wanted to know the application process for a diploma. I was told that working at a retail shop will not help me get my Diploma because it is not related to the qualification and that is when I was advised to apply for apprenticeship at Skills Academy and Artisan Development,” stated Mncedisi. He applied and he was successful and began at the centre in April 2018. His facilitator at the centre, Sello Paille, pushed him to enter the competition because he was the only person who qualified to enter the competition in his class. He grabbed the opportunity with both hands. “I took the opportunity because of the prospects of learning new things and to see other countries,” continued Mncedisi. Participation in the World Skills Competition holds a huge potential to influence the development and employability of the South African Youth. In addition to this, it acts as an effective vehicle to increasing awareness of apprenticeships and
artisanal skills, raising the standard of vocational education and training and artisanal skills. Mncedisi is proud of the fact that he will be representing the country in the International leg of the competition. “I feel that I have a responsibility on my shoulders to represent my country well and make everyone proud. I want to give it my best and bring the trophy home,” he said. His future plans are to open his own company that will specialise in civil engineering and building construction and to continue studying. His advice to young people who are not doing anything at the moment is “young people need to grab all the opportunities that are presented to them with both hands and work hard.” According to Paille, his facilitator, he is a well behaved boy who carries out instructions correctly. “I would like to say to him, he should continue working as hard and listen to his trainer by doing what he is told,” advised Paille. The college management is proud of his achievements. “We appreciate the efforts of everyone involved in this competition and we are proud of Mncedisi Mkhaliphi, we know he will make us proud again in Russia,” concluded the college Acting Principal, Portia Mange.

Conference to support students’ needs in the current dispensation Gert Sibande TVET College held it’s first-ever Student Support Services Conference recently at Waterfront, Standerton, with the theme ‘Student Support Services in the Dispensation of the fourth Industrial Revolution’. According to the college CEO, Portia Mange, the purpose of the conference was to address social affairs, academic support and financial aid. The topics ranged from disability support, the role of student support in Word Skills competition, job placement and work preparedness amongst others topics. Student Support officials from Gert Sibande, Ehlanzeni, Nkangala and Vhembe TVET Colleges formed part of the delegates. Day one of the conference comprised of speakers from different organisation to emphasize the importance of Student Support Services in the overall wellbeing of students in the current dispensation. Richard Mediroe, Acting Director: Student Support Services in the Department of Higher Education and Training. His presentation touched on the importance of Student Support Services from the perspective of the Department of Higher Education and Training. According to him, an ideal Student Sport Services should provide Pre – entry support, on-course support and exit support. He further spoke about the benefits of Student Support Services which are: to enable students to choose programmes aligned to their interests and cognitive capability, guided by the critical skills areas of the country, serve as an early warning mechanism to college management on issues affecting students as well as their social and learning environments and eliminate barriers to students success amongst others. Lutendo Doyoyo, Relationships Manager at the National Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), explained the application process of NSFAS and the expectations for 2020 and answered some of the frequently asked questions by delegates. Sihle Nzuza, Job Placement Manager at Gert Sibande TVET College, shared best practices of Workplace Based Experience (WBE) and graduate placement with delegates. Veli Nkosi, Instructional Designer at Gert Sibande TVET College, e-Learning unit delivered an interesting presentation that focused on how e-Learning can be integrated in academics and Student Support Services. His presentation showed the importance of integrating technology in the classroom. Social media has become an integral part of our daily lives and it has created a number of social ills. Pat Zwane, Director from Mpumalanga Basic education spoke about the use of social media in teaching and learning. He also touched on social media legalities as well as branding. He pinpointed the fact that students should refrain from opening social media pages under the name of the college because whatever is said on those pages might reflect badly on the colleges as brands. Kagisho Selebano, Student Support Services Manager at Motheo TVET College shared best practices about the significance of disability unit. Selebano defined disability as “An impairment that may be cognitive, developmental, intellectual, mental, physical, sensory or some combination of these. It substantially affects a person’s life activities. It may be present from birth or occur during a
person’s lifetime.” According to him, the role of disability unit is to nature children’s skills and abilities, the manifestations of his/her disability and the nature of the course or programme amongst others. Motheo TVET College runs one of the most successful disability support units in the country. Most TVET Colleges in the country do not have exit support to support students after they exit the TVET system. Lulaway representative, Evha Nteso gave a brief presentation that was aimed at exit support and work readiness. Lulaway Holdings is a company that prides itself in connecting people, funders, government and business. They also play a unique player in the entry-level recruitment and training sector in South Africa. “As a social enterprise, we are dedicated to sustainable job creation through entry-level staffing, matching employers with candidates recruited through our nationwide network of job centres and empowering those entrants to the workplace further with the support they need in order to retain their jobs, develop and remain active contributors to the economy,” alluded Nteso. The placement of students in the workplace is also heavily reliant on how ready are they for the workplace. Career guidance plays a significant role in determining what career path an individual can embark on. Ditupha Fothane, Director of career guidance at the Department of Higher Education and Training, defined career guidance as “Services that are intended to assist people of any age and at any point throughout their lives, to make educational, training and occupational decisions and to manage their careers.” According to him, career guidance is important because it seeks to address lack of access to career guidance and information in schools, mismatch between demand and supply, the high rate of unemployment in the country, the high drop out and to promote lifelong learning amongst others. The programme of the first day included a Gala Evening. The keynote on the Gala evening was delivered by a clinical psychologist from Shaping the Learner, Gerald Williams. He also conducted psychological training for student support services officials on day two of the conference. The training touched on basic counselling for students who experience trauma and social challenges, he trained delegates on how to manage students with problems. Williams also aided delegates with doing referrals and how to get feedback from the referrals. He further trained delegates on how to draw action plans and collect a data base of support groups and other relevant organizations that can support students for their overall wellbeing. The prgramme of day two was kick-started with commissions. The commissions were aimed at addressing the following key issues: • Interventions that can be implemented to ensure that qualifying students are funded and debt recovery strategies are in place for unfunded students • How can the results of a placement test be used to improve academic performance and students who are underperforming • The role of Student Support Services in the overall management of student wellness and how to build a database of social support structures to help students develop holistically and the impact of social media in the
dispensation of the 4th industrial revolution • Career guidance, work placement, linkages and tracking (pre-entry and exit support) • Management support in the context of the Student Support Services plan and pillars of Student Support Services.

Dear Editor We had an event on Saturday, 16 March It was indeed a milestone to cherish forever at NDP eMbalenhle Paradise centre. Children enjoyed it and it started from 10am till 6pm. This fun and games initiative was established to fight any form of struggle and with God’s grace we finally managed to bring Paradise to earth. We managed to strike two birds with one stone. Da Poet
established a stall for the kids at the centre and they were all responsible to run the stall as equal shareholders and they managed to raise R304.00. These are entrepreneurs in the making. Our chairperson strongly believes that entrepreneurship starts at an early age especially when you are under pressure to find ways of survival as he did while he was still in grade 5. He established a Spaza shop and it was located across the road from his home. He didn’t use the fact of growing up with no father as an excuse because a mother can play both roles; being a mother and being a dad at the same time. Surely these kids are capable
of running a supermarket and this is a single step towards that. Your Saturdays will never be the same, catch us next week and bring your child or your neighbour’s child. Xbox is available, Ghost house, Balloons Pop ups, bag race and many more. We won’t forget to entertain you with our Traditional dance as we did on Saturday! You expect acting, comedy and poetry. We’d like to thank the journalist and guest speaker, Ms Busiswa Mrasi, for motivating on the day and encouraging us to do different kinds of dances as we’ve been doing. She also told the kids to put education first and avoid those who encourage them to stop pursuing their talent.
A municipal vehicle caught fire in Wicht Street, Bethal, before noon on Monday, 18 March. The cause of the fire is not yet known. No injuries were reported.
Overlooked hands over restored reservoir
Overlooked colliery near Bethal refurbished a water reservoir in eMbalenhle, Ext 15. The handover ceremony took place on Tuesday, 12 March. Several dignitaries spoke at the event. The refurbishment created several jobs for the community.

This past weekend, 16 and 17 March, Graceland Hotel, Casino and Country Club hosted their Club Championships. The weather was perfect golfing weather and those that are used to the weather in Secunda prepared for the breeze that blew in the early morning and later settled a little bit. With the new South African handicap system, the divisions were as follow: Gold: 0 – 6.5 (Medal); Silver: 6.6 – 15.3 (Medal); Bronze: 15.4 – 23.2 (Medal) and Copper: 23.3 – 29.3 (IPS). This challenged the golfers to play their best on this amazing links course. The golf manager and his team ensured the greens were in tip top shape and the fairways were in mint condition. The rough… well golfers who know the course know better to stay out of the rough. Martin Odendaal entered the competition to defend his 2018 title. This young man played extremely well both days and was able to walk away, again, as the Men’s Club Champion. The 2019 Ladies' Club Champion was Lizelle Olivier. Walker Park Golf Club hosted their Club Championships The past weekend, 16 and 17 March, Walker Park Golf Club hosted their Club Championships. The Championships took place over 2 days of 18 holes each, in total 36 holes! The youngest player of the tournament was Damian Blignaut. Damian is only 8-years-old and played all 36 holes and enjoyed it immensely! Rochelle Rademeyer was the A Division ladies champion and Dorothy Pieterse was the C Division ladies champion. The men’s A Division champion was RuJuan Lessing and the B Division winner was Michael Snyman. Well done to all the players that competed!

Sasol 1 cricket fell short at the final hurdle Unfortunately, Sasol 1 fell short at the final hurdle. Sasol 1 lost to Nelspruit in the 50 overs Mpumalanga Premier League with 52 Runs. Sasol had a good day on the field restricting Nelspruit to 169 all out. Ignus Koekemoer took 2 wickets for 22 runs in 10 overs. Siya Mahima took 5 for 20 runs in 8.3 overs. Unfortunately, our batting was not on par with Siya Mahima being the top scorer with 31 runs. It wraps up what has been a successful season for Sasol Cricket

Afriforum het die verf aangeskaf en vroeg ingespring. Selfs die kinders het deelgeneem en dit gate uit geniet. Ronnie Nelson wil graag dankie sê vir Boeta se Slaghuis vir wors en Engen Vulstasie vir broodrolletjies wat geskenk was.

Sasol 2 ended 3rd in the Gert Sibande premier league. Sasol 3 ended second in the Gert Sibande 50 over promotion league. Sasol 1st Women team won the first ever Gert Sibande women’s title. Sasol DigiMag 1 crashes against Phakisa Holdings East Rand United
Sasol DigiMag (Sasol) suffered a humiliating defeat against East Rand United (ERU) at Reigerpark Sports Ground, Ekhuruleni, this past Saturday, 16 March. The Gold Cup competition is wide open after the weekend’s results. The SSG Gold Cup Facebook page writes the following: “What a DRAMATIC second Saturday in the SSG Gold Cup, Presented by Blu Approved & M4Jam and championed by World Cup winning Springbok captain, John Smit! 2017 finalists College Rovers shocked at “Die Hok” in Uitenhage, Northam Platinum Rhinos edging 2015 champs Durbell in Cape Town, Phakisa Holdings East Rand Utd beating Sasol DigiMag Secunda at the “Graveyard”... this tournament is WIDE OPEN!”
Sasol will have to improve their game dramatically if they want to advance into the quarter finals. ERU took Sasol on in all facets of the game and came out tops! The game started at a fast pace and after Sasol scored the first try it looked a sure thing that this will be another win for Sasol. This was not the case however. ERU contested the ball at every point and Sasol conceded a lot of turnover balls. It took Sasol most of the game to realise how ERU was winning the balls, by then it was a little too late. Once Sasol realised how to counter the turnover balls, especially in the loose rucks, they climbed in with the vigour that is so characteristic of Sasol’s game. Sasol also managed to score two tries
through powerful drives. Sasol’s game against ERU lacked a spark and at times it looked as if they had accepted defeat already. It would appear that Willa’s (Captain) injury in the game against Multisure Gardens would cost the team dearly. The front eight did some very hard work against an equally determined team and managed to put ERU under a lot of pressure at the scrums only to be let down by a poor game plan at the backline. The lineouts are worrying as not enough clean balls were won on own line outs and Sasol’s front 8 did not read the lineouts very well allowing ERU to put them under pressure. The biggest problem arose in the backline. Something was amiss. The usual flair, good handling and excellent
defence were not there. All the tries of ERU were scored by the backline. ERU simply passed the ball to the wings and nearly always created an overlap. The wings had the speed and simply outran their opponents. There were some individual efforts that made everyone sit on the edge of their seats only to be let down by the team as a whole. Sasol’s next game is on Saturday here at the Sasol club grounds. Please come and support them as they play against College Rovers. It is a home ground game and Sasol would need every bit of support that they can get. Secunda and the whole of Mpumalanga is cheering for our boys! Let’s show them next Saturday!!!
