January 2019
Monthly Report General Outlook R-PET The R-PET market continued to track a stable trend in Europe in January, with demand still quite good and supply comfortable. The R-PET range in Italy was reported at €920-980/ton for clear grade on FD basis, while prices for R-PET light blue grade were reported at €900-950/ton with the same terms. As for R-PET mixed colors flakes, prices were reported stable month over month in Italy at €640-670/ton FD. RPET prices for clear grade in Northwest Europe were reported at €1020-1060/ton FD. A recycler in Italy reported, “We have kept prices mostly stable this month. Some buyers were interested in replenishing their stocks and supply was comfortable. We expect a revival of the R-PET market in February.” A buyer affirmed that demand was good during the month and he received requests from his end-product customers for a higher percentage of R-PET material in his products. As for February, both Italian and Northwest European players expect demand to improve and consequently possible increases also in RPET prices.
R-HDPE Prices in the R-HDPE market followed a stable to softer trend this month after stability witnessed in December. Accordingly, rollovers to decreases of up to €30/ton from last month have passed on January deals. Overall market conditions are still considered to be rather poor among players and expectations for February started to emerge on a stable to softer note. A recycler commented, “Demand is calm due to the winter season. Off-spec material is still weighing on the market as the gap between them is very narrow amid weak virgin PE market. As for February, we expect possible decreases in prices as the current market conditions might not support any hikes.” A buyer, who built some stocks during the month paying decreases of €10-30/ton from last month, anticipates a mainly stable trend for next month owing the pressure from the PE market while possible increases might be seen as of March.
R-LDPE The R-LDPE market registered rollovers to small decreases of €10-20/ton in January deals after stable to small drops have passed in the previous month. The softer trend in the prime LDPE market that has been in place since a couple of months continued to keep a downward pressure on R-LDPE products as well. A distributor of recycled material sold his January volumes stable to lower from last month while a pipe manufacturer said, “We secured some material for this month at lower prices compared to December. As for February, we expect a stable trend as the weakness of virgin PE market is exerting some pressure on recycled material.” Expectations for February are mainly calling for rollovers on the back of the stable outlook reported for the next ethylene contract and prime LDPE prices.

Monthly Report R-PP Players in the R-PP market wrapped up their January deals at mostly stable prices compared to December given weak demand. A buyer in Italy commented, “We have closed our deals with rollovers over the month. Supply is not very comfortable at the moment while our end product demand has improved with respect to last month. We think that suppliers might apply stable prices also for next month although the virgin material has decreased in January. Meanwhile, a supplier of recycled products sold his volumes with rollovers in January and he thinks to sell material at stable prices also next month as he is waiting the R-PP market to recover..
Price ranges reported include an average freight cost to the customers’ location as well as duties if applicable, although VAT is not included.
