the Comprehensive Breast Institute, and latterly the state-of-the-art Neuroradiology Institute – have made an invaluable difference to the lives of our patients, literally saving lives, in so many domains of medicine. ”Home is where the heart is.” Dear Friends, On behalf of the World WIZO Executive, and on my behalf, I would like to extend our warm congratulations on the occasion of the 100th Birthday of Canadian HadassahWIZO. The year CHW was established was a remarkable year for the Jewish people. It was on this year that the landmark Declaration of Balfour was published, stating loud and clear for the first time in history the Jewish people’s right to establish a national home in the land of Israel. This national dream has since turned into a blossoming reality, thanks to the endless efforts and devotion of CHW, WIZO, and many other Zionist friends and peers.
WIZO is proud of the wonderful journey we have made with our Canadian sisters. Through our partnership, we have developed this vision to offer not just a national home, but a loving and caring home to those who need us in Israeli society. Since pre-State days, our CHW Nahalal and Hadassim Children and Youth Villages have served as a safe home, offering quality education and care for Jewish youth from Israel and from abroad. After the birth of Israel, our CHW daycare centres have become a caring second-home, where every child, whatever her/his background, gets an equal chance in life. Each of our CHW centres is an empowering home
for women from every age group and all walks of life. My dear friends, I would like to thank and congratulate you on 100 years of support and love for the Jewish people and the State of Israel. As Canadian Hadassah-WIZO begins its countdown into its second centennial, I wish you another century of commendable work and support, leading the way in Zionist philanthropy and endeavors. Letter to the Editor Hello, I finally had a chance to finish reading the Winter ORAH. It’s full of so many inspiring personal stories, which made me recall many wonderful times. As I reflect on my 35 years as a member, first as a new bride in Sudbury (much of Evelyn’s words could be my own), to participation at many of the events articulated in Sandy’s history, all the way to Debbie’s installation at the AGM, I’m filled with pride. I recall the discussion and vote to embark on our Sustainer’s project and kicking off our rebranding efforts as we entered the 21st century. Probably one of my fondest memories, in addition to my years as CHW Toronto Centre President, would be my time serving as World WIZO’s Aviv Representative (Canada’s first) and chairing the International Aviv conference in Israel, followed by an address to the full plenary at the EGM. My mom joined our CHW group for the journey and attended several of the sessions. It was to be our last trip together as she was diagnosed with cancer a few months later and died about 6 weeks before the CHW Aviv Meeting and Convention. (I think she timed her departure so that the meetings were just after her shloshim, allowing for my participation.) Some of my dearest friendships resulted from my participation at CHW. Some of my proudest moments have been seeing the results of our work in Israel, meeting the beneficiaries of our fundraising efforts, and witnessing the work of a new cohort of CHW leaders, many of whom I mentored and encouraged over the years. We are truly a remarkable organization, and I’m thrilled to be around to celebrate our Centennial year. Here’s to continued success! Best, Judy Zelikovitz Past National Director

Since 1917, CHW has been improving the lives of women, children, and families in Israel and Canada. To mark this momentous occasion, let’s take a trip down memory lane to get inspired and celebrate 100 years of achievement. 1917 – Inspired by a visit from Henrietta Szold, the first official chapter of Hadassah is established in Toronto by Anna Selick (later Anna Raginsky). 1918 – At a Zionist convention, Lillian Freiman was approached to become the first National President of Canadian Hadassah

1919 – The first Junior Chapters of Hadassah are formed. 1920 – Rebecca Sieff of Britain founded the Women’s International Zionist Organization (WIZO) and is elected its first President. 1921 – First National Canadian Hadassah Convention is held in Montreal. Lillian Freiman is officially elected the first National President of Hadassah Organization of Canada. • Canadian Hadassah affiliates with World WIZO. • Canadian Hadassah’s name is changed to the HadassahWIZO Organization of Canada. 1923 – Canadian Hadassah-WIZO becomes an official sponsor of the Chana Maisel Shochat Agricultural School at Nahalal. 1924 – The first Hadassah-WIZO Bazaar is held in Toronto.

1933 – Youth Aliyah is established, and Canadian Hadassah-WIZO soon becomes its official sponsor in Canada. 1934 – The first group of 43 Youth Aliyah children were received by Henrietta Szold in Israel. 1939 – CHW supports wartime services in England, Canada, and Palestine. Much work is done to provide emergency care for refugees. 1940 – The death of Lillian Freiman ends her fruitful 21 years as CHW President, and Anna Selick Raginsky becomes the second National President.

1945 – CHW coordinated an ambitious emergency program for the care and rehabilitation of thousands of war refugees, and took on the role of rebuilding the basic structure of WIZO in Israel.
1946 – The first WIZO Conference after WWII is held. 1947 – Rosa Singer becomes the third National President. • CHW Hadassim Children and Youth Village is established to meet the needs of refugees from war-torn Europe. 1948 – The State of Israel is proclaimed, with David Ben-Gurion as the first Prime Minister. • CHW begins its affiliation with Hebrew University. 1949 – The first Israeli Consulate opens in Montreal. CHW helps to furnish the office.

1950 – Youth Aliyah had welcomed over 5,000 children and was credited with saving 100,000 children. 1951 – Sally Gotlieb becomes the fourth National President. 1953 – Canadian Hadassah-WIZO affiliates with Assaf Harofeh Medical Center and the Canadian Hadassah-WIZO Rehabilitation Centre is established. 1955 – Canadian Hadassah-WIZO becomes involved with Magen David Adom • Lottie Riven becomes the fifth National President. 1956 – The Sinai Campaign – Egypt at war with Israel. • CHW provides funding for the Eilat Hospital. 1960 – Canadian Hadassah-WIZO publishes the first issue of its official national magazine: The ORAH. • Nina Cohen becomes the sixth National President.

1976 – Clara Balinsky becomes the 10th National President. 1978 – The restoration of Independence Hall in Tel Aviv is undertaken by Canadian Hadassah-WIZO, as a tribute to Israel’s 30th birthday. 1979 – The first Annual Southern Conference is held in Florida. 1980 – Mirial Small becomes the 11th National President. 1981 – “Project Enrichment,” a new major-gift category of $10,000, is launched by Ofira Navon, wife of Israeli President Yitzhak Navon, during her Montreal visit. 1982 – Canadian Hadassah-WIZO sends a delegation to the first WIZO International Seminar in Israel, for members under 45 years of age.

1983 – Witnessed the establishment of a Canadian Affairs Department to ensure CHW’s involvement with other organizations, including the National Council of Women, United Nations, Human Rights and Status of Women. • Cecily Peters becomes the 12th National President. 1985 – The Canadian Committee for Soviet Jewry presents the National Award to Canadian Hadassah-WIZO for “their noble endeavours in rescuing Soviet Jewry.” • A new category of major donors is established: “Chai Life Trustees,” for gifts of $18,000.

1987 – Canadian Hadassah-WIZO is recognized and welcomed in both the Canadian House of Commons and Senate in honour of its 70th Birthday. In turn, the organization endows bursaries in women’s studies at universities across Canada. • The first National Aviv Conference is held in Toronto with 200 women in attendance from across Canada. • Naomi Frankenburg becomes the 13th National President.
1989 – Hundreds of thousands of immigrants from the Soviet Union are brought to Israel by the Jewish Agency, bringing with them a wealth of expertise, helping to create an economic boom in Israel. 1990 – Canadian Hadassah-WIZO affiliates with Hadassah International and becomes the sole representative in Canada of the world-famous Hadassah Hospital at Ein Kerem, Jerusalem. • The Canadian Hadassah-WIZO Foundation is inaugurated, with two donation categories: Founders at $25,000 and Members at $5,000. • Esther Matlow becomes the 14th National President.

1992 – Jerusalem marks 25 years of re-unification. • CHW celebrates its 75th Birthday. 1993 – The 34th National Convention is held in Israel, with a record 550 participants from 28 Canadian Centres in attendance. • Judy Mandleman becomes the 15th National President. 1994 – The new “Women for Women” program is inaugurated with proceeds going to services for battered women. • The Canadian Hadassah-WIZO Human Umbilical Cord Blood Bank is instituted at Hadassah Hopsital – the first of its kind in Israel. 1995 – The first National Leadership Training Course is held in Toronto.

1996 – At the 35th National Convention, the Women of Achievement Award is established. • Patricia Joy Alpert becomes the 16th National President. • Canadian Hadassah-WIZO becomes a sponsor of Ben Yakir Youth Village. 1997 – 100th Anniversary of the birth of Zionism. 1998 – 50th Anniversary of the State of Israel. 1999 – Two new major categories of cumulative giving are established: the CHW Society of Sustainers ($50,000- 99,000) and the CHW Society of Major Donors ($100,000+) • At Hadassah Hospital, the Artificial Heart Pump Program is established. • Marion Mayman becomes the 17th National President.

2001 – Construction starts at CHW Nahalal Community and Comprehensive School on an elaborate new education complex, comprised of an auditorium, library, sports stadium, covered pool, laboratories, and additional classrooms. 2002 – Rochelle Levinson becomes the 18th National President. 2003 – Canadian Hadassah-WIZO and CHW Toronto Centre finance a medical exchange program between doctors at Hadassah Hospital and Sunnybrook and Women’s College Health Services in Toronto.

How CHW Influenced Women’s Role in Agriculture Below is an informative timeline showing the history of women’s Zionist organizations in relation to agricultural training for women in the early 1900s. From Esther Carmel-Hakim’s book, “Chana Maisel: Agricultural Training for Women,” this timeline shows how CHW’s involvement in Israel helped shape the role of women in the agricultural field. CHW’s first President, Lillian Freiman, envisioned a plan for CHW that included agricultural training for women in Israel. Established in 1923 (originally as a school for women), not only was Nahalal Children and Youth Village CHW’s first project in Israel, it was an agricultural school for girls, which was unheard of at the time. Agriculture was traditionally thought of as being a male occupation, due to the hard labour involved. Therefore, Nahalal played a historic role in both the State of Israel and the history of CHW as a Canadian women’s Zionist organization.

Sustainer Profile Lily Fixler Why I Became a
Sustainer
“I felt that this was the least I could do for the State of Israel, which welcomed my parents and me to the city of Haifa in February 1949.� I became a Sustainer a few short years after the program was adopted by the Board of Directors. As an Israeli who has lived in Canada for almost forty years, I felt that this was the least I could do for the State of Israel, which welcomed my parents and me to the city of Haifa in February 1949. As I watched some of my school friends taking the bus to the WIZO school in central Haifa, I decided to pursue a different route; academia. The WIZO school taught some of them secretarial skills, while others learned how to sew, or studied Home Economics. When I arrived in Calgary, just before Rosh Hashanah in 1977, I realized immediately that I needed to help with projects connected to Israel. That fall, Gert Cohos and Sophie Kettner coached me in canvassing for UJA. I proceeded to join the EJI Chapter of CHW and became President of CHW Calgary. Israel has always been at the forefront of my thoughts because my whole family lives there. My mother, who is 98 years old,

raised me to be a proud Jew wherever I live. The State of Israel plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of Jews all over the globe. Becoming Sustainers made both George, my husband, and I very proud. Our children Sharoni, Yossi, and Ari are proud of my contributions as a volunteer for CHW. The concept of Tzedakah and Tikkun Olam are part and parcel of our beings. As a Sustainer and Past-President of CHW Calgary, I have had the honour and good fortune to visit all of our projects. George and I, now both Sustainers, recently visited Hadassah Hospital, Assaf Harofeh Medical Centre, and Hadassim Children and Youth Village. What a gift! The children and the women that I have met regularly since 2007 have put a smile on my face. As our 40th wedding anniversary approaches, our commitment is stronger than ever, and we hope to keep contributing to CHW while our three beloved grandchildren, Levi, Amari, and Nia, are learning about Tzedakah.

Israel’s Award-Winning Singing Duo: Guy and Yahel Guy and Yahel’s story began in 1997 when they were just 12 years old. The boys met one another at CHW Hadassim Children and Youth Village. Both Guy and Yahel came to CHW Hadassim in need of a loving home environment. Yahel was born on an Air Force base in Israel. His father was a pilot; often leaving him alone with his mother and his brother, Yonatan. When Yahel was four years old, his parents divorced. Yahel and Yonatan moved with their mother to a small town in the south of Israel. Shortly after moving, Yahel’s mother re-married. The man Yahel’s mother married did not like Yahel or his brother, and Yahel recalls his stepfather ruled the house with an “iron first.” Yahel and Yonatan were often exposed to mental and physical abuse. In 1994, Yonatan went to a music festival where he saw the famous Israeli musician Aviv Geffen perform. During his performance, Aviv stopped and gave a speech. He said that for any child in the audience who feels unsafe at home, there are places to help them. Yonatan felt as if Aviv was speaking directly to him. Following the concert, Yonatan left home and sought refuge at CHW Hadassim Children and Youth Village.
While at CHW Hadassim, Guy and Yahel recall that they were always encouraged to dream big. When they expressed an interest in music, the staff ensured they received instruments and music lessons. Both Guy and Yahel found their way through music. They learned to play many instruments and how to express themselves through music. After Guy and Yahel graduated from CHW Hadassim and completed their army service, they moved to Tel Aviv together to pursue their music careers. Together they composed, played, and produced music for other artists, while working on their own album. Then they decided to go on the Israeli version of “The Voice,” where they had the opportunity to personally meet Aviv Geffen; the very person who brought them together! Since then, Guy and Yahel’s music has soared to the top of the charts; with two Hebrew and one English album. The duo has won numerous music awards in Israel. Guy and Yahel look back on their time at CHW Hadassim as an extremely positive experience; giving them the opportunity to pursue their goals, aim high, and fulfill their dreams.
Three years later, Yahel followed in his brother’s footsteps and moved to CHW Hadassim. When Yahel arrived at CHW Hadassim, Yonatan introduced him to Guy. The two remember it being a true friendship right from the moment they met, and they quickly became like brothers. Guy and Yahel recall their time at CHW Hadassim as being like “Never-Land from Peter-Pan.” It’s a place where many children come together, and are able to become friends quickly because everyone has an understanding of what the others have been through.

How the Doctor Became the Patient The impact that CHW has had on my life, the hospital, and the State of Israel is immeasurable. I have been the Director-General of Assaf Harofeh Medical Center since February 1998, for nearly two decades. During this time, I have seen the hospital grow before my very eyes and CHW’s unwavering loyalty and commitment has played an important role. It is challenging to convey how CHW’s support has impacted our hospital and aided in its evolution over the years. One can merely look at photos to see the difference in the buildings from then to now; and we have progressed far beyond this. CHW has established state-of-the-art facilities and provided some of the most advanced equipment and technologies, enabling our physicians to perform cutting-edge procedures. CHW has enabled our hospital to perform research and medical advances that impact lives in Israel and around the world. Through this support, CHW has directly enabled us to save thousands of lives. One of the most outstanding facilities established by CHW has been the CHW Marla Dan Stroke and Invasive Neuroradiology Institute. The Institute not only saves lives, but reduces the risk of life-long disabilities. We saw CHW establish the M. Fanny Comprehensive Breast Care Unit, the first in the country of this nature, and the most advanced, which provides sameday results and treatment plans to ensure that every woman’s healthcare needs are looked after without delay. The Esther Matlow Ophthalmology Department is a continuum of advancing technologies that restore patient’s eyesight. These are but a few of the CHW projects. Wherever one moves around in the hospital, one will see a CHW plaque illustrating CHW’s steadfast dedication. Personally, I was able to appreciate and fully realize the impact that CHW has on our patients and families when I, myself, became a patient in the Sylvia and Lorne Cristall Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit. They say that doctors make the worst patients; yet I spent one year of my life receiving a level of quality care that I had never been exposed to before. As a patient, I was made to feel comfortable and well looked after by
my nurses, physicians, and psychologists. The facility is well equipped to care for the needs of every type of cardiac patient, whether patients have had a heart attack, undergone heart surgery, and so on. This Unit’s professionals created a customized treatment program comprised of exercise, a balanced diet, and ongoing education on how to look after myself once I completed my cardiac rehabilitation. In Israel, the insurance provider offers three months of complimentary rehabilitation; however, I was enjoying my experience so much that I opted to stay for a full year and pay the remainder out of my own pocket. During this time, as the fellow patients I was in rehab with did not know that I was the Director-General of the hospital, I was able to learn first-hand how our patients felt about this Unit and Assaf Harofeh’s quality of care. I was honoured to hear mostly positive feedback; many people shared that they prolonged treatment at their own expense because they felt they were truly benefitting from the treatment received from our facility. Prior to the establishment of the Sylvia and Lorne Cristall Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit, there was no such facility of this nature for cardiac patients at the hospital. This was established solely by CHW with thanks to the Cristalls and all the other generous donors. Little did I know at the time of its establishment, that one day I would become a patient there. In summary, it is safe to say that CHW’s impact on people’s lives is immeasurable. The Sylvia and Lorne Cristall Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit serves a specific population that is in need of care. Over and above that, I have seen CHW become intertwined in our hospital and become a part of our daily lives. Over the years, we have enjoyed building a strong and fruitful relationship; knowing that without the support of CHW, the hospital would not be the world renowned facility that you now know. Dreams Come True Although she is relatively unknown in North America, Gila Almagor is one of the most beloved actors and writers in Israel. She was even bequeathed with the loving title “Queen of Israeli Cinema and Theatre.” Her story and what earned her this remarkable reputation began when she arrived at CHW Hadassim Children and Youth Village, as a child.
While at CHW Hadassim Gila became inspired to pursue her dream of acting. She later moved to Tel Aviv to pursue a career in acting, and in 1963 she married Yaakov Agmon, with whom she had two beautiful children. Although Gila has appeared in dozens of Israeli feature films, plays, and television shows, she remains connected to her past. She even wrote two autobiographical books to share her story.
Gila was born in 1940, in pre-State Israel. Her father, Max, was an immigrant from Germany, and her mother, Chaya, immigrated to Palestine to escape the Nazi regime. Gila’s parents were married and lived in Haifa until Max was killed by an Arab sniper while on duty as a policeman, leaving Chaya, who was five months pregnant with Gila, alone.
Her first book, The Summer of Aviya, in which she discusses her relationship with her mother and her experiences living at the youth village, has experienced widespread success and acclaim. Her second book, Under the Domim Tree, which focuses on her time at CHW Hadassim and the impact it had on her life, was later made into a film that won the Vulgin Prize at the Jerusalem Film Festival.
Chaya struggled with the loss of her husband and the psychological devastation of losing much of her family in the Holocaust. As a result of these traumas, Chaya was institutionalized. And so, at the young age of 13, with no one to care for her, Gila went to CHW Hadassim. At the time, CHW Hadassim had just been established by Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW); specifically to take in children who had been orphaned because of the Holocaust, as well as children at-risk. When Gila first arrived, she remembers meeting these children. Learning about all they had been through really put Gila’s life into perspective. Until she arrived at CHW Hadassim, she thought she was the most miserable and unlucky kid in the whole world. “Those children had been through devastating things that I could not even imagine; this helped me to understand and appreciate what I had in my life,” she said.
To this day, Gila still feels CHW Hadassim was one of the most important experiences in her life. “It was a paradise for me. The values, life lessons, and support that I received from there made me who I am today. I am forever grateful.” For 70 years, CHW Hadassim Children and Youth Village has been an unwavering pillar in Israeli society; taking in children in desperate need of love and care. Gila is one of thousands of children whose lives were saved as a result of CHW Hadassim. Initially, opening its doors to Hungarian and Polish orphans as well as Israelis, CHW Hadassim has evolved over the years and today is home to children from around the world, including the former Soviet Union, France, Latin America, Iran, Ethiopia, and many other countries.
During her time at CHW Hadassim, Gila finally felt like she really had a home, friends, and love. She was able to heal and grow. One of Gila’s favourite memories from CHW Hadassim was spending her afternoons working the land. Gila found solace and peace while working in the garden. “CHW Hadassim planted the seed and helped me grow, because of them I flourished,” she said. At CHW Hadassim, she learned values that would define her character forever. Gila began to appreciate the life she had been given, to fight for her future, and to understand the importance of friendship. It was at CHW Hadassim that Gila made lifelong friends and met her first love.

Lenny & Faigel Shapiro
Lenny and Faigel Shapiro have been married for almost 65 years.Together they have three daughters and six grandchildren. Not only are they involved with CHW, they also support a list of 24 carefully researched charitable causes and organizations. As Lenny put it: “We have received many rewards from our gifting and philanthropy; we don’t even call it charity because it’s a great feeling when you can look someone in the eyes and know that you’ve helped them.” Despite the fact that CHW is predominantly a women’s organization, Lenny has been an active member for many years. His involvement with CHW began with the help of Ida Eichler and Sophie Kettner. It was Sophie who put Lenny in touch with Lily Frank, and it was Lily who suggested he help build a horse stable for Ethiopian children at BenYakirYouth Village. “To us, it’s important that CHW shows our men that there is a place for them to support children, and the needs of Israel,” he said. According to Lenny, they picked CHW because it was a partnership they could count on. “CHW has some of the most responsible, enjoyable people to work with. In a country like Israel, we all have so many problems finding good investments into people, CHW is a standout; they are there, they are honest, and they’re going to continue being there,” said Lenny.
year. Lenny even makes a yearly trip to Israel to have lunch with the soldiers. “So many of them have so little, and they put their lives on the line,” he said. During his yearly meeting, he is often asked why he feels the need to show his support for Israel and for the soldiers. His response is: “I’m a Zaide, and I love you.” Lenny and Faigel are not only long-standing supporters of CHW, they have also created a matching donation program to inspire others to invest in CHW. “It’s easy for you to give x-dollars, but to get them to give you a match, to come up with money alongside you, that’s a great feeling,” he said. Lenny and Faigel have plans to encourage more matching donations in the years to come. When asked what he would recommend to others who are thinking of making a Woman/Man of Distinction gift, he said: “Take pride in doing something for young people.The rewards are just as fabulous for you—the investor—as they are for the young kids. I think I get more out of gifting than I give!”
CHW Hadassim Children andYouth Village is a project close to Lenny and Faigel’s hearts. “It’s a worthwhile project, and you do so much there,” he said. Since becoming active supporters of CHW, they have tried to visit CHW Hadassim at least every other year. Lenny also has a great love for the combat IDF soldiers, and has set up a scholarship program at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem for 60 soldiers each

CHW OTTAWA President In Conversation
Lynn Gillman
CHW Ottawa President A member since 1983, Lynn Gillman comes from a long line of involved CHW family members. She has held every position in her Chapter and on the CHW Ottawa Council, except for Treasurer. Lynn moved to Ottawa to attend university and absolutely fell in love with the city, and with CHW. How did you first get involved with CHW? Well, I was newly married living in Ottawa, my husband was working, but I couldn’t find a job. I had very few friends, and almost no Jewish friends. My sister-in-law called me up and said, “I’m tired of you moping. I’m taking you to my CHW Amit Chapter meeting. Be ready.” It just seemed very familiar. All these things were what my mother talked about at home, and during meetings at our house, so I felt like I already belonged. Terry Schwarzfeldz’l was at the meeting, and she walked up to me, and she didn’t even ask me if I was going to join, she just said, “There’s a new Chapter starting, and you will be joining that Chapter.” And I don’t even know if I said yes, but the next thing I knew I got a phone call and I was at the Bazaar helping. And that was it; I was hooked. All the people I met in the Mollie Betcherman Chapter and Amit Chapter are still my friends today. I became the Vice President of Mollie Betcherman, and later I took over the Presidency. My daughter grew up with meetings at my house, the same way I grew up, seeing me go out to volunteer at different events and fundraising, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. What do you find most challenging about being a Centre President? Trying to start a new Chapter is probably the most challenging. And remembering that CHW is a volunteer organization, run by volunteers. It can be easy to forget that people are volunteering because everyone is working so hard.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about getting involved with their local Centre? I would really encourage them. I learned a lot of transferrable life skills from CHW. How to make a presentation, organize an event, and how to talk with, introduce, and thank people; a lot of what I do every day at my job I learned at CHW. It was a very good training ground. I would also mention that the friends I made at CHW are the friends that were there for me, through all good and hard times in my life. Friendships can be hard to make, but the ones I made through CHW have withstood the test of time.They were there for me when I was in my twenties, but are also with me as I’m approaching my sixtieth year. What exciting initiatives are underway at the Ottawa Centre? The Amit, Mollie Betcherman, and Ina McCarthy Chapters Annual Tea has grown from a smaller, internal tea, to one of the most exciting events in Ottawa for the springtime.We honour somebody really deserving in the community, and not only do people want to come, but they look forward to the invitation and want to host.We now have a line-up of people who want to offer their homes, which is very exciting. As soon as we finish the tea, everyone is working on the Walk in the Park, which is very important because the money goes to the Terry Schwarzfeld Daycare Centre, and the SchwarzfeldCotsman family are very involved. For us it’s very important to keep that connection with Terry. What would someone be surprised to know about CHW Ottawa? While we have members who are originally from Ottawa, many of our members span from the very east coast of Canada, to the very west coast. And we all bring different perspectives because of that. Ottawa grew very quickly in the 70s, 80s, and 90s; from 5,000 to 15,000 Jews. And it drew people from everywhere; from small towns and from large cities.We’re a large group of very accomplished women: we know each other, we see each other, and we’re friends.
Woman of VAlour Mildred Sonshine Born in Toronto, Mildred has been part of the local community for a long time. At 93 years old, she has many fond memories of CHW and the great work being done here at home and in Israel. Mildred is proud to be passing the CHW legacy down to two of her own daughters, both members of the Samya Chapter, and her granddaughter, who recently joined the Tamid Chapter. Mildred herself is part of the Beth Gan Chapter, and has been for 67 years. She is currently in her second term as Chapter President. “Being a Woman of Valour means that you’re dedicated to the projects of CHW,” she said. One of Mildred’s closest friends was an original member of the Beth Gan Chapter, which was first formed in the same year as the State of Israel – 1948, and she talked Mildred into joining CHW, where she’s been enjoying herself ever since.The members of Beth Gan are a group of very close-knit friends. Although there are only 18 members now, there were once 40 members who met on a regular basis. “We still meet every three weeks.We don’t do much fundraising now, but for 19 years, I hosted a successful fundraiser in my house – we made $10,000 each year by inviting 100 women and charging $100 a ticket,” said Mildred. Mildred has a passion for fundraising, and put her skills to good use whenever she could. On a trip to Israel in 2006, she visited the Rose Dunkelman Day Care Centre, which was in terrible shape. After returning to Toronto, she decided to make the Day Care her personal pet project. Along with her good friend Ilse Seetner, she visited many Chapters to spread the word, fundraising until they had enough money for the renovations, with the exception of the kitchen, which was funded a few years later.
Other than the Rose Dunkelman Day Care Centre, Mildred’s fondest memories revolve around the Bazaar. For more than 50 years, Mildred helped run the restaurant at the Bazaar, which sold 2,000 home-made cabbage rolls each year. “We were known as ‘The Cabbage-Roll Ladies,’” she said. “The local policeman loved those cabbage rolls. Every year they thought we were going to sell out, and they were going to miss out, so they started lining up 30 minutes before we opened.” They didn’t just sell cabbage rolls at Bazaar, they also had a toy booth, a shoe booth, a clothing booth, and ice cream waffles, and each one was a separate booth. Mildred remembers the line-ups for Bazaar being so long they were often featured on TV, so of course she was sad when Bazaar stopped operating. She also remembers how much work there was, and approaches things in a realistic way: “In my day, the women didn’t really work, not unless they had to. The older women worked the Bazaar from 7 a.m. until midnight, but women work now so they can’t do that.” Mildred has always wanted to help in any way she can, so when her friend Ilse became a Woman of Valour, she realized how strongly she felt the need to do so as well. On her 90th birthday, after sharing her wishes with her four children, they presented Mildred with the gift of becoming a Woman of Valour. When asked if she has any advice for someone who is thinking of becoming a Woman of Valour, Mildred said, “You do as much mitzvahs as you can, while you’re alive, and while you can afford it. I would strongly suggest that any woman who can–should, because it would give her a lot of pleasure to know who she’s helping and how she’s helping.When I see the money put to good use, it really makes me feel good.”

Challah: The Toast of the Town
CHW NETANYA TECHNOLOGICAL HIGH SCHOOL Patisserie Program
Ingredients: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
2 cups (500 grams) all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon (11 grams) of active dry yeast 3 tablespoons (50 grams) sugar 1 cup (215 grams) lukewarm water 1 egg 4 tablespoons (60 grams) butter (alternatives: margarine or vegetable oil) 7. 1 teaspoon (6 grams) salt 8. 1 large egg yolk (reserve for the egg wash) 9. 1 tablespoon sesame seeds or poppy seeds (optional)
DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 170 degrees Celsius (350 Fahrenheit). 2. Sift the flour into a medium sized bowl. 3. In a separate bowl, mix yeast with water until dissolved. Wait 10 minutes to activate yeast (it should look expanded and foamy). 4. Place flour mixture into electric mixer and knead. Add in the yeast mixture, sugar, and one egg. Knead for 7 minutes on medium speed (if you do not have an electric mixer, you can knead by hand). 5. Add in the butter and salt, knead for another 2 minutes on medium speed (you want to knead until the dough is smooth and elastic, not sticky). 6. Leave dough in bowl, cover with kitchen cloth and let rise for 60 minutes (or until dough has doubled in bulk). Note: this may take longer than an hour. Tip: Leave bowl in warm place (such as the top of the refrigerator) to encourage rising. 7. Remove dough from bowl and place on floured surface. Knead dough again for 1 minute. 8. Evenly divide dough into three parts and roll into long snake-like shapes. 9. Pinch the ends of the three snakes together at the top and braid. At the end of the braid, pinch the bottom ends together as well. 10. Once braided, cover with kitchen cloth and let rise for 30 minutes. 11. Place on a greased baking sheet and put in oven for 30 minutes. 12. Remove from oven and brush on egg yolk. Add sesame seeds or poppy seeds if desired. 13. Place back in the oven for 30 minutes. If getting too golden brown, cover challah with tin foil. 14. Cool for approximately an hour before serving. *Serve as a side at any dinner party, or as a snack with your favourite spreads and toppings.

CHW Legacy Circle:
Claire Conrad
It’s a Volunteer Life Claire Conrad has been involved with CHW since she first moved to Canada 35 years ago, although her involvement with Israel began even earlier. When she lived in England, Claire was a member of Aviv, the younger group from WIZO, and in 1982 she took a trip to Israel with British WIZO. During the trip she actually spent some time at Hadassim Children and Youth Village. Even though they were looking at British projects, they ended up at Hadassim and Claire just fell in love. “I was just so impressed,” she said. “I thought they were doing an incredible job.” In 1983, Claire, her late husband Michael, and their two young children moved to Canada. Several months prior, Michael had come on his own to visit Vancouver. He called Claire on his very first day in Canada and said, “Well, I’ve seen the mountains and this is where I’m going to live for the rest of my life.” And so the family packed up and headed for the coast. Claire saw CHW as an obvious choice when she first moved to Vancouver. She had made a lot of friends in England, and wanted to do the same in Canada. She knew CHW was where her friend-base would develop, so she got involved right away. She took the initiative and got in touch with the CHW Vancouver Office. “We had a really great membership chairman, Bea Libby, and she worked hard to find me a Chapter that would fit my needs,” said Claire. Claire ended up joining the Yamit Chapter, and has been there ever since. “We’re not terribly active, but we’re still always threatening we’re going to have a meeting,” Claire

said. Although she retired after 20-plus years in Property Management and Real Estate, Claire doesn’t feel like she will ever retire from CHW. “It’s a sustained involvement,” she said. “It goes on from adulthood until the end.” It’s no wonder that Claire felt the need to leave a lasting gift to CHW by joining the Legacy Circle. She wanted to ensure that CHW projects will continue into the future. The need is always there, and she wanted to do her part to help CHW meet its commitments. “I’m just proud to be part of an organization that goes from strength to strength. It says something about the women [at CHW] that the organization is in such a good place.” Claire knows that for everyone involved at CHW, it’s not just about volunteered time. “It’s a volunteer life,” she said. And with the Legacy Circle, your involvement lives on. Claire wants to make sure that anyone thinking about joining the Legacy Circle knows there is more than one way to do it. “You don’t just have to leave people a substantial sum of money in a will, you can do it by means of an insurance policy, which for many people might be an easier option.” Claire believes in CHW, and the difference being made in Israel and around the world. “I think CHW has the same relevance today for Israel as it’s always had,” she said. Israel is home to Jews from all over the world, and it is necessary for us to give back and show our support however we can. CHW Memories Project
Sandy Martin Rebranding 2005-2008
In October 2013, CHW Ottawa launched the “Memories Project,” a historical look into the foundation that made their Centre what it is today. The project was so inspiring that it led to an entire series of articles in the ORAH, leading up to this final installment, just in time to celebrate CHW’s Centennial year. Sandy Martin grew up believing in Israel. Her mother was an active member of CHW Calgary, and her grandmother was a member of the first women’s Zionist chapter in Montreal. Sandy was raised on a healthy diet of community, family, and volunteerism; setting her up for a future of dedicated activism. After majoring in Social Work and minoring in Psychology at San Jose State University in California, Sandy worked at a counseling centre. She loves helping people, and has always searched for ways to actively give back to the community. She soon moved to Vancouver to be closer to home and started the Machar Chapter. She found CHW to be a kind of extended family, nurturing growth and providing opportunities to enact change. After she married her husband, Larry Martin, and moved home to Calgary to start a family, she remained dedicated to CHW. In 2005, Sandy became CHW’s 19th National President, following her time spent as National Vice-President. She began her volunteer career with Canadian Hadassah-WIZO more than three decades ago, and ever since has assumed an impressive range of offices, including Chair of Major Gifts, Programming, and Fundraising. She was also Vice-President and then President of CHW Calgary Centre. 58

During Sandy’s term as National President, two important fundraising programs were established: Sustainers and Woman of Valour. The goal of the Sustainers program was to generate a perpetual giving program the organization could rely on. The Woman of Valour program recognizes major gifts in support of CHW’s ongoing commitment to WIZO projects. Also during Sandy’s presidency, Canadian Hadassah-WIZO was rebranded as CHW, introducing Children, Healthcare, and Women as an alternative meaning for the CHW acronym. This change, along with the relaunch of the website and ORAH magazine, helped modernize the organization as we know it today. At the end of her term as National President, Sandy was honoured with the naming of the Sandy Martin Alberta Daycare Centre in Ramat Hasharon. This, along with the many ways Sandy is still involved with CHW projects, is a continuation of her commitment to Israel and CHW. “My connection with and love for people has always been the foundation of all that I have done,” said Sandy. “CHW has allowed me to continually be engaged through the interaction with other women and our valuable work for children, healthcare, and women. In turn, I have benefited immensely, in the nourishment of my mind, body, and soul!”
Terry Schwarzfeld Passionate Devotion 2008-2009
Born in Regina to a Zionist family, Terry Schwarzfeld grew up actively participating in the Jewish community. Both her mother and grandmother were CHW members, and Terry always knew she would follow in their footsteps. After graduating from the University of British Columbia in 1972, she moved to Ottawa with her husband, Stephen Cotsman, where she earned her master’s degree from Carleton University. Although she was new to Ottawa, she was soon invited to become a member of the Amit Chapter, where she began her lifelong passion for CHW. Before she became CHW’s 20th National President in 2008, Terry served three years as Vice-President, as well as being a member of the National Executive Board and a former President of the Amit Chapter. She knew so much about the organization that she even participated in the creation of a CHW trivia game. Terry was very passionate about CHW and worked hard to inspire the same passion in others. When she began her term as National President, Terry was more than excited to dive right in to her new responsibilities. In an interview with the Ottawa Jewish Bulletin, she said, “I’ll be away from home a lot. Over my three-year term, I hope to visit each of the centres across the country.” Terry’s enthusiasm was visible to everyone who met her. Terry’s vision for CHW was to enhance cross-functional collaboration and to create synergies in the organization.
In January 2009, Terry visited the Acco Daycare in Israel. After spending time with the staff and the children, she decided the daycare needed to be refurbished and assigned CHW Ottawa the task of making the project a success. When Terry passed away, tragically in March of 2009, the daycare was renamed in her honour. The Terry Schwarzfeld Ottawa Daycare Centre is an enduring memorial to her devotion and commitment to CHW and the children of Israel.

Marla Dan Agent of Change 2009-2014
Marla Dan has been an active member in the CHW community for 28 years. She was raised in a strong Zionist home, learning at a young age the importance of community involvement. Her mother was a vibrant member in the CHW Edmonton Centre, while her father was President of their synagogue. It is no surprise that the three principles guiding her through life are Zionism, volunteerism, and mentorship. When Marla was 16, she took her first trip to Israel, which cemented the connection between her upbringing and the land of Israel. When she moved to Toronto in her early 20s, it seemed only natural for her to join a local CHW Chapter; to make friends, and to further her desire to give back to the community. As a member and the President of Tamid Chapter, and later as President of CHW Toronto Centre, Marla spent a great deal of time with strong women who not only provided her with the mentorship she needed, but helped her find the path to her own leadership. Marla’s involvement at CHW has only grown over the years, and she has held almost every position available. After her time as President of CHW Toronto Centre, Marla became the 21st National President. She accepted the role in 2009, after the sudden and tragic loss of Terry Schwarzfeld.

She took on Terry’s three-year plan, working hard to ensure Terry’s CHW legacy continued. She was officially voted in as National President in 2012. During her presidency, several important events occurred: there was a revision of the constitution; including a modernization of CHW’s governance structure, the Legacy Circle was introduced, the Fertility Clinic at Hadassah Hospital was completed, and much needed funding was provided for Assaf Harofeh Medical Center. Also during Marla’s term, two very important partnerships were made with Assaf Harofeh Medical Center’s M. Fanny Comprehensive Breast Care Institute and the Neuroradiology Institute, which is now named the CHW Marla Dan Stroke and Invasive Neuroradiology Institute. Marla’s support has enabled the establishment of the Dan Auditorium at Nahalal Youth Village, and the Patisserie Program at the CHW Netanya Technological High School. She is also currently Co-Chairing the “Celecation” Trip to Israel with her husband Aubrey for CHW’s Centennial Birthday. Marla’s outstanding philanthropy, focused on helping women, children, and families, as well as her leadership and volunteerism, has a far-reaching impact on the lives of everyone involved in CHW projects.
Claudia Goldman Partnership 2014-2016
A second generation Vancouverite, Claudia holds a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of British Columbia (UBC) as well as a B.A. in Art History and Religious Studies from UBC. Over the course of her professional career, Claudia held roles as a Law Firm Librarian, Reference Librarian, and Library Technical Services Head.
CHW Hadassim Children and Youth Village. In 2015, during her presidency, CHW committed to fully equip the Lower Level IV Operating Room in the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower at Hadassah Hospital. The operating room is protected from conventional, biological, and chemical weapons, ensuring lives can be saved without interruption.
Claudia has been with CHW for 30 years. Although Claudia initially became involved for the social aspects, she soon realized CHW had become an important and meaningful part of her life. When her children were teenagers, Claudia decided to devote all her energy to volunteerism. She left her job and became a full time volunteer and dedicated philanthropist. She hasn’t looked back since.
Claudia’s other passion project is Hadassim Children and Youth Village. In 2016, The Claudia Goldman Dormitory Hey was re-opened, making room for more French Na’aleh students in need of a safe place to learn and grow. Claudia made it her personal mission to make the building a comfortable, safe, and warm environment for the children who live there.
During her many years at CHW, Claudia developed friendships with people from all over the world. She loves how CHW connects women with each other, and brings together likeminded people. In 2014, Claudia became CHW’s 22nd National President, after having taken on many different roles at the Chapter, Council, and National levels. Claudia has been to Israel numerous times, and has developed a special bond with many of the CHW projects in Israel, specifically Hadassah Hospital and
Claudia is hoping the next generation of women will benefit from the strength and passion of CHW, just like she did, especially now that her daughter is part of CHW Vancouver. “I want to be sure that CHW continues forward and that the friendships, pride, and joy that I have received from being involved will be shared with future generations of women. CHW defines for me the infinite possibilities that women can achieve when they work together and want to make a difference and help people. It’s such an amazing organization and I just want it to go from strength to strength.”

Debbie Eisenberg Sustainability and Growth 2016-Present
Debbie Eisenberg was born in Brooklyn, New York. Her parents always tried to help those in need. When Debbie was young, she often heard her parents talking on the phone, offering advice and support to family, friends, and colleagues. Her upbringing instilled in her a desire to always do her best, never stop learning, and to lend a helping hand wherever needed. Debbie moved to Kitchener, Ontario with her husband, Gary Levene. The two met while campers and counselors at a wilderness camp in Algonquin Park. After she obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Childhood and Special Education from Syracuse University, as well as a Master of Science Degree in Human Genetics from Sarah Lawrence College, Debbie made the big move to Canada. In 1981, Debbie attended her first CHW meeting, and shortly after, her mother-in-law presented her with a gift of Life Membership, thus beginning her 35-year volunteer journey with CHW. She quickly became involved at her centre, taking on leadership positions at the local and national levels. Debbie loved connecting with other Jewish women in her new home, participating in the local community, and supporting CHW projects in Israel. Debbie was elected CHW National President – the first one from Kitchener-Waterloo – in 2016. During her presidency, she has decided to focus on sustainability and

growth. “CHW’s support has strengthened, and continues to strengthen, the very fabric of Israeli society. To ensure CHW’s continued growth, we have to remain relevant to our members, friends, donors, partners and beneficiaries. We must continue to nurture and further develop CHW’s culture of philanthropy,” she said. Debbie is ringing in CHW’s Centennial year as National President. Not only is CHW’s Centennial Birthday a reason to celebrate extraordinary past accomplishments, but it is also a time to look to the future with optimism and excitement. The world of volunteerism is changing, so as we move forward, CHW has to grow and change in a way that will resonate with the next generation; building strong relationships and inspiring them to get involved. As Debbie said, “We cannot change the direction of the wind, but we can adjust our sails.” Debbie is helping solidify a legacy which will last for CHW’s next 100 years: “Together we must all work on behalf of CHW and in support of CHW to promote our mission, elevate our profile, and increase our fundraising capacity to ensure that we remain relevant and vibrant for the next 100 years, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.”

Instead of issuing tax receipts for each donation made, consolidated tax receipts are issued twice yearly following the periods: January 1 to June 30 and July 1 to December 31. A summary of all donations made will be included with your tax receipt.

CHW in Canada Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW) is known for the good work that is being done for Children, Healthcare, and Women in Israel. However, CHW also partners with many different organizations in Canada, and CHW members in Centres from coast to coast participate in these charitable activities. Here is a peek at a few organizations or initiatives that were recently supported by CHW in our local communities. CHW Calgary Chanukah Toy Drive For over 14 years, CHW Calgary has held a toy drive prior to Chanukah. The toys are given to Jewish Family Services (JFS) and the Alberta Children’s Hospital (ACH) for distribution to families who cannot afford any extras. CHW Calgary is proud that the 2016 Toy Drive provided toys, movie passes, and gift cards at the ACH and JFS. CHW Calgary is proud of this mitzvah project that supports their local community and reflects CHW’s values in investing in Children, Healthcare, and Women. Scholarship at Mount Royal University CHW Calgary has established a scholarship at Mount Royal University to enable a full-time student enrolled in the Bachelor of Business Administration with a minor in Social Innovation and Non-profit Studies to continue their studies. The first award will be presented in September, 2017, for CHW’s Centennial year. CHW Edmonton Terry Horwitz Memorial Bursary Since 2009, CHW Edmonton has proudly sponsored the Terry Horwitz Memorial Bursary. The Bursary celebrates Terry’s life, and honours her work with children in the early learning years. The $1,000 bursary is awarded to full-time, second-year students enrolled in the Early Learning and Child Care program at MacEwan University in Edmonton. Terry Horwitz z’l graduated from the program in 2004. CHW Toronto Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre CHW Toronto has been an active community partner with the Foundation at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, contributing to the funding of a Neonatal Intensive Care Patient Room and currently, the CHW Exam Room in the Louise Temerty Breast Cancer Centre. The Louise Temerty Breast Cancer Centre and its breast cancer experts ease patient anxiety by providing diagnosis and detailed treatment plans in just 24 hours. CHW Toronto is proud to partner with Sunnybrook on these meaningful projects that reflect CHW values and reminds us of the importance of supporting our local communities. Stella’s Place,Young Adult Mental Health Commencing in fall 2017, Toronto Centre will be supporting Stella’s Place,Young Adult Mental Health located in downtown Toronto. Stella’s Place offers a range of community based supports for young adults ages 16-29 who face mental health challenges. CHW will be
specifically supporting an innovative, online peer support app codesigned by young adult volunteers and students at George Brown College. This new app will feature moderated, supervised online peer support available to registered users. Toronto Centre is proud to be connected with Stella’s Place and helping to make a positive difference in the lives of thousands of young adults. CHW Vancouver Jewish Family Services Agency CHW Vancouver has proudly partnered with various local organizations over the years. CHW Vancouver continues to provide new cosmetic items to women in need through the Jewish Family Services Agency in Vancouver. CHW Ottawa Maureen O’Neil Award in Women’s Studies Offered through Carleton University, this award was endowed in 1985 by CHW in honour of Maureen O’Neil, Coordinator, Status of Woman Canada. It is awarded annually, when merited, to a student enrolled in the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research who is doing work in Women’s Studies. CHW Montreal MADA Community Center MADA is a local community centre whose central purpose is fighting poverty in the Montreal community. CHW Montreal collected nonperishable food items for Chanukah in December 2016 and most recently their volunteers packaged food for their Shabbat to Share Program. In addition, CHW Montreal members recently volunteered to serve dinner at Le Café. Le Café provides hot, kosher meals twice weekly in a warm, respectful environment. CHW Montreal Pro-Am Supports LOVE For 8 years, CHW Montreal has collaborated with Leave Out Violence (LOVE) Quebec, an organization that works with youth aged 13 to 19 by helping them end the cycles of violence in their lives and by training them to become leaders in violence-prevention within their communities. Staff and youth from LOVE volunteered at the event and had a chance to meet the participants. Proceeds from the event were donated to LOVE.

The Details: On the CHW website, there is an option of uploading either two ($20) or four ($36) photos. Although any photos can be included, the most mosaic-appropriate are portraits and headshots (cropping is encouraged). The images to the left are perfect examples. And the great thing is that all photographs can be uploaded from your phone, tablet, or computer - it’s that easy! Once completed, the mosaic will be emailed to everyone, so you can have a copy of this wonderful keepsake. The mosaic will be officially unveiled at the CHW AGM in November, 2017, and proudly displayed in the CHW Head Office.

Our focus this year has been on learning from our members. In December, Lila Mydlarski shared her life in Yiddish: speaking it, studying it, teaching it, and enjoying it. Then in February, Miriam Trehearne spoke to our Chapter about what parents, grandparents, and schools can do to effectively support preschool and elementary student growth in literacy and how Canadians and especially Albertans are doing in this regard.
As part of our CHW Centennial celebration, our members held a MiniBazaar. Lots of memories were shared. There were local vendors, a food truck, and the usual market tables. Thank you to Aviva Cheuk and Galit Abosh for organizing, and all of the members who volunteered and donated items.
On June 6, at the annual Connections Tea, 27 ladies met for an afternoon of tea and wonderful baking at Maison Senior Living. Aviva Cheuk provided an update on CHW and the Akiva grade one girls entertained with a few songs.

The Annual Campaign Launch took place June 20. It was a coffee party at the home of Goldie Barth. CHW Guelph was pleased to welcome Elayna Latsky, National Director, as the keynote speaker at the event. Elayna spoke about a multitude of projects and the social impact CHW has made in Israel. In attendance were CHW members from Guelph and Toronto, as well as many members of the Jewish community.

CHW Ottawa Annual Passover Fair
The week before Passover, The Amit Chapter (along with two other organizations) held the Annual Ottawa Passover Fair. Each year the Chapter helps to organize the event that brings together Passover items in one central location. This year the Chapter quickly sold out of matzah covers, afikomen bags, table runners, kippot, aprons, wine bags, and other items, such as cook books and stuffed animals.

Annual Spring Tea
The annual Amit, Mollie Betcherman, and Ina McCarthy Chapters Spring Tea was held June 4th at the magnificent home of Elissa and Avraham Iny. This year Naomi Lipsky Cracower was honoured for her contributions to the Ottawa Jewish community. Special guests were National President, Debbie Eisenberg and National Executive Director, Alina Ianson. Naomi spoke passionately about the project she chose to be the recipient of the funds collected: the Therapeutic Centre at the Hadassim Children and Youth Village.

The evening of June 8 was a complete success with a turnout of almost 120 people. Dr. Joe Schwarcz educated as well as entertained the audience with his talk, debunking many of the myths we have about food. The silent auction was very large and most people went home with something they found. The room was beautifully and creatively decorated with balloons and huge paper flowers made in the CHW colours. Our own CHW National President, Debbie Eisenberg, closed the evening by reminding us of the importance of donating to CHW.

Lev Zahav Mother’s Day Flowers Lev Zahav held their 8th Annual Mother’s Day event, selling close to 400 pots of flowers.
StartUp Your Career
This May, CHW Toronto Centre held their first ever event for young professionals. A panel of five of Toronto’s top young entrepreneurs gave advice on how to land a job that will launch your career. Over 50 young professionals were in attendance, making this event a huge success.
Rimon Yoga in the City
From their beautiful spread of food, to the impressive turnout of yogis, the Rimon Yoga in the City event was a huge success. Over 20 women took part in an hour-long yoga session, followed by a healthy snack bar and friendly mingling.
Girls’ Night Out
Tamid Chapter’s 12th Annual Girls’ Night Out, on March 30 was a huge success. From an incredible selection of vendors, to a delicious buffet and a photo booth, it was the perfect night to catch up with girlfriends and have some fun!

On May 29, the 14th annual At Our Table raised a record amount for Canadian Hadassah-WIZO! Tzedakah Chapter wants to thank all the generous guests, donors, and sponsors, including Downtown Porsche and Brettler/ Mintz Foundation for their loyal and generous support. Over 275 guests enjoyed an evening of delicious food and good friends at the stunning home of Liora and Simon Yakubowicz. Jessica Herzig Yakubowicz gave an entertaining and informative presentation on art collecting.

The Anna Zaitchick Chapter hosted their 6th Annual CHW Walk in the Park on June 4. This fundraising walk was an outstanding success; the Anna Zaitchick members surpassed their goal and raised over $10,000! The Golda Meir Chapter hosted a fabulous musical concert on June 11 featuring the talented and charming Edwin Orion Brownell at the Shaar Shalom Synagogue. Guests were entertained with a musical performance that was both passionate and entertaining.

Canadian Movie Encore Presentation: There is Many Like Us
On January 11, CHW Montreal co-hosted an encore presentation of the film There Is Many Like Us with Montreal’s March of the Living (MOL). The film is set in World War II Poland as seen through the eyes of Montrealers Rena and the late Max Fronenberg. The collaboration with MOL was significant and gave us the opportunity to raise awareness for the important projects CHW supports. Sharing this gripping story with MOL participants proved invaluable to their learning experience. The Junior CIT’s of Y Country Camp were also in attendance; they too wanted to learn from Rena and Max’s story of survival and courage. Many thanks to the event chair Susan Bercovitch for all of her hard work and dedication. Her commitment and devotion to this project ensured that the program was both meaningful and successful. 74

Passover Baskets
The Shoshanim Chapter’s Passover Baskets were a huge success! Once again, these wonderful gifts for the holidays were sold out well in advance. Many thanks to our team of dedicated volunteers who helped to assemble and deliver all 504 baskets throughout the city. Over $35,000 was raised in support of CHW programs and projects. A huge thank you to Alana Shiveck who chaired this fundraising project and ensured that each year’s basket is more beautiful than the previous one.
Nurses Health Forum
The Nurses’ Council Chapter has a reputation for hosting health forums that address current medical topics and this year was no exception. Our guests had the opportunity to hear two outstanding professionals in the field of palliative care discuss “End of Life Decisions:” the dynamic Dr. Manny Borod, Director of the Division of Supportive and Palliative Care Program at the McGill University Health Centre, and the knowledgeable Dr. Bessy Bitzas, PhD Nursing, Head Nurse of the Palliative Care Unit and Herzl Family Practice Centre at the Jewish General Hospital.

Meducation
At Meducation on April 19, Dr. Joel Epstein was the guest speaker on the topic of “What is My Mouth Trying to Tell Me.” Besides being an accomplished speaker, Dr. Epstein is also related to two members of the Vancouver Executive (he is Toby Rubin’s uncle, and Debbie Rozenberg’s cousin). The evening was enjoyed by all.

Aviva Games Day
May 11 was the Aviva Chapter’s Annual Aviva Games Day at the Richmond Country Club, where over 100 women gathered for a day of Canasta, Bridge, Scrabble, Mahjong, and favourite games from childhood, as well as a silent auction. Three Vancouver Past National Presidents, Claudia Goldman, Rochelle Levinson, and Judy Mandleman, cut the cake. Many thanks to the Aviva ladies for their hard work.

On June 20, CHW Vancouver was delighted to host Dr. Benny and Haia Davidson at Sylvia Cristall’s home. It was a fabulous evening for Vancouver’s Sustainers and Major Donors, socializing and learning about how CHW has made a difference to the patients and staff at Assaf Harofeh Medical Center.

Once again CHW Saskatoon’s Silver Spoon Co-Chairs. Dinner on May 8th was a resounding success. The featured entertainment for this women’s gala was the CBC Radio comedy troupe, “The Debaters,” starring Steve Patterson, Kate Davis, and Dave Hemstad. They were hilarious! The 625 women in attendance had a rollicking great time while supporting four charities: CHW, Congregation Agudas Israel, Ronald McDonald House SK, and Saskatoon Interval House. 76

CHW Victoria Turkey Presentation
Although we have had a cold damp start to the 2017 year, our spirits certainly weren’t dampened with all the varied activities that were held over the past several months. In February many of our members enjoyed a very informative presentation on the Jewish Community in Turkey given by our Hebrew instructor Betsi Bueno. Betsi grew up in Turkey and is a very vivacious beautiful person. It was especially interesting to hear her perspective on the recent unrest within the Erdogan government and the attempted coup that happened there in 2016. Betsi also treated us to a slideshow of beautiful photographs showing off the stunning Turkish scenery.
Annual Campaign Kick-Off
In March our Past President Sharon Fitch kicked off our Annual Campaign with a presentation on her recent trip to Israel. She and her husband Ed enjoyed five weeks in a rented apartment in Jerusalem in Nachlaot, where Machne Yehuda (the main market) is located. We were given an intriguing insight into some of the people that crossed their path; some were family members and some were people whom they hadn’t met before. We were given a unique view into the lives of people living in the Land. One example was Sharon’s cousin who worked in Orthodox Mea Shearim, running a website to sell velvet embroidered Torah Scroll covers, kippahs, and other religious articles. It was very interesting and such beautiful work! Sharon talked about sharing Shabbos meals with people they met at Synagogue. A request was made to Sharon to tell the story of her family’s “Great Grandmother Elke” who emigrated from Bessarabia to Canada in 1914, remaining for years in Montreal, before emigrating again in her later years to Jerusalem in 1928; a fascinating woman. Great Grandmother Elke is buried on the Mount of Olives.
Bridal Shower and Fundraising Lunch
We held an April bridal shower for one of our youngest CHW members and our bride-to-be requested that people not bring gifts but donate to CHW instead. We had a delightful time celebrating Chen’s upcoming wedding and were doubly blessed to raise funds to support our projects in Israel. In April, we also had our first Birthday Fundraising Lunch, when the March/April birthdays were celebrated. Sixteen women enjoyed a lovely afternoon at the Lure Restaurant, situated in a beautiful setting on Victoria’s Inner Harbour. As well as the birthday celebration, we raised funds for a CHW project and had fun catching up with friends.
Walk in the Park
In May we recently completed our own “Walk in the Park” and it was made additionally pleasant because several ladies in our Chapter made picnic lunches for those who participated. After a robust walk in Beacon Hill Park, we enjoyed our picnic lunch, while sitting in the sun enjoying the ambiance. Of much interest were the blue heron nests that are in one particular corner of our beautiful park; a treat that many had not seen before. Our first “Walk in the Park” was dedicated to the memory of one of our members, Raisa Balagur, who passed away in April; a lovely lady whom we all will greatly miss.
