Fires close trails in Jefferson Wilderness area Governor Kitzhaber declares state of emergency to address statewide wildfire activity

Governor Kitzhaber has verbally declared a state of emergency in response to wildfire activity across the state. The emergency declaration enables the Oregon National Guard to mobilize resources on an as-needed basis to assist the Oregon Department of Forestry, the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office, and others with fire fighting. “Oregon is facing a severe fire season. Conditions are dry and new fires are starting daily,” said Governor Kitzhaber. “This declaration gives the resources and tools we need to respond and

protect people, property, and Oregon’s natural areas. This crisis is a reminder that each of us has a responsibility to our state to prevent new wildfires.” Firefighters continue to respond to reports of over 65 lightningsparked fires from storms that crossed over the Cascades Sunday. Most of the fires are small, ranging from a single burning tree to less than ¼ acre in size. Six new fires were found Tuesday afternoon. The largest fire on the forest, the Bingham Complex, is located on the Detroit Ranger District.

The complex consists of two larger fires and numerous small ones, all of which are located within the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness. As of 1700, the Bingham fires’ total acreage is 265. Fire managers have closed a portion of the Mt Jefferson Wilderness, as well as several trails in order to protect firefighter and public safety. The following trails are closed

On July 8, there was a shooting incident in Falls City. Two men armed with .45 caliber semi automatic pistols threatened another male between Parry Road and Mitchell Street. They then went to a residence on Sheldon Ave. and reportedly shot 4-5 rounds at it. The homeowner at that location returned fire and then gave chase as the suspect’s car sped away westbound into Falls City. The vehicle chase continued through town and the suspects reportedly fired back at the pursuing vehicle as they were passing in front of the Falls City High School on North Main Street heading eastbound out of town. No one was hit in the exchange of gunfire nor in Suspect Scott (Scotty) the short pursuit. The homeowner who was targeted Newton of by the drive-by shooting stopped when he saw a Polk Mill City County Deputy in the area and re- (cont’d on page 3)

A thank you from the Grand Marshalls To the Editor and the Community: We would like to think the Fourth of July committee for selecting us to be the Grand Marshalls for the Fourth of July parade. It was certainly an unexpected honor. We would also like to thank the parade committee for the beautiful bouquet of

roses for Mary. We appreciate the volunteers in the many hours they donate to make our community what it is...A wonderful place to live and have a business. We do believe in giving back to the community to keep it a better place to live. Dale and Mary Kirsch

To the Editor and the Community: The Mill City Firemen would like to thank everyone for the generous support of our annual Fireworks Display. The volunteers spent $6,000 this year on fireworks and received $2,500 in donations the night of July 4th. If you were missed and still want to donate you can

stop at the fire hall at any time. The firemen want to thank the City of Mill City for being able to use the sewer treatment plant to set the fireworks off. We hope that everyone had a fun and safe 4th and want to make sure that everyone has a fire safe summer. Mill City Fire Dept

Joanne Hebing of Mill City is a mother and a grandmother an active proponent of developing a skate park in Mill City. Each week, Mrs. Hebing has been submitting reasons why she believes a skate park would be a good thing for any community. The Mill City Skate Park Committee meets at least each month which are announced on their Facebook page: Mill City Skate Park Project: *Skateboarding is a popular spectator

sport. There are more than 2 million skateboarding videos on YouTube with many featuring over 5-million views each. (data from 2011) *Skateparks are flexible in design and can work in many different size plots. Donald, Oregon features one of the nation’s most well-known skateparks. It is 2,500 square feet, cost $35,000 to build and serves a town population of 750 residents. Yet it attracts celebrity skateboarders and others from across the nation.

but the run is a little late.” Locals have noticed an increase in fish this year, and some are attributing that to the new fish facility at Minto Dam. Grenbremer explains why this might be the case: “Fish runs are cyclic, you need to start with a quality smolt (healthy and right size), good river conditions while migrating to ocean, good ocean conditions, and good river conditions on the way back up the river. The new (Minto Dam) facility has state of the art equipment to provide stress free handing and efficient ways of getting the fish back into the river for propagation and get them back to the fisherman.” 9 year old Wyatt Kadin baited his hook, sunk it to the bottom and hooked his first little jack on the North Santiam River in Mill City last week.

Press box nears completion at Santiam’s Davis Field

Santiam Jr/Sr High football coach Brad Emmert has been thinking about this project since he took over the football program a few years back. He saw the aluminum spectator stands at Davis Sports field just west of Santiam Elementary School, and saw something lacking. “We were the only football facility that I had played or coached at that didn’t have an elevated box for coaches, announcers, etc,” said Coach Emmert. So he set off to do something about it. He teamed up with Gale Holfert and began contacting potential donors. Slowly that list grew, making the dream closer to a reality. They broke ground in June and this past week a team of volunteers erected the steel structure that now proudly completes the

sports complex. “This helps to bring us up to par with the best teams in the state,” said Coach Emmert. Donors for this project include: Phillip McCollugh, Engineer (Plans); David Walczak and Far Line Bridge Crew (Foundation and Concrete Slab); Brent Mitchell, Brad Mitchell, and Rogue Industrial Metalworks (Steel Frame Construction); Dennis Frank and Frank Lumber (All studs and dimensional lumber); Rob Freres and Freres Lumber (All plywood); Pat Kelly and Kelly Lumber (2 X 4’s and other lumber needs); Gale Holfert (Volunteer and a God-send for

Mill City Market Place gives away 3 minute shopping spree Net proceeds to purchase school supplies for Santiam Canyon School District students

Spectators invited to join the fun on July 19

Mill City Market Place, in partnership with Western Family and Unified Foods, awarded a three minute free-for-all to Gates resident Chris Huffman as part of their Customer Appreciation Day. The shopping spree will take place on Saturday, July 19 at 9am. The puplic is invited to watch and cheer on the winner. “It’s going to be a lot of fun,” said store manager Sandi Stegemann. “It’s the first time we’ve done something like this and we’re very excited.” Huffman, the prize winner, will have three minutes to grab as many Western Family products as he can, up to two of each item. “The rules are that Chris can grab, say, two boxes of the same kind of cookie, then will be asked to move

to another item,” said Stegemann. The prize was awarded as part of the store’s annual Customer Appreciation Day drawing held on August 3. Many other prizes were awarded, including the following: Steve Kyriss won the Mr. Coffee Maker, Armen Carpenter won the 2 burner cook top, Sheila Heeley won the DVD player, Jame Davidson won the Rocket Blender, Holly Hemphill won the kitchen scale, Tree won the breakfast sandwich maker, Brandon Whitener won the remote helicopter, Micah McCall won the blender, Ellen Allen won the flat screen TV, Bob Johnston won the BBQ set, JJ Aerni won the bike and Katie Sorrick won the popcorn popper. Canyon fireworks draw crowds from all over Oregon

It was July 4th in Mill City and Kimmel Park was filled to the gills with families and friends packing in to find just the right spot to sit and watch the show. Cindy and Ron Husted from Salem were there with about 30 of their Salem/Keizer friends. “We come here every year because we love to hear the echoing off the canyon walls, and it the show up here is so much better than in Salem,” said Cindy. The Mill City Volunteer Fire Department has been hosting the fireworks for several decades, and no one seems to know exactly how long. But what they do know is that each year it just gets better and longer. The department spends about $6000 a year on fireworks, and have 3 certified pyrotechnist to helps them to save in costs. All costs are covered by donations and fundraisers including the annual Firemen’s Benefit. The volunteers collected $2,500 at Kimmel Park this year in cash donations to prepare for next years event, which was $500 more than last year. “We try to add an extra $500 in salutes every 3 years or so,” said Chief Leland Ohrt. On July 5th this year, the Fireworks Over the Lake in Detroit was another big hit, bringing attendees from all over Oregon. “It is a truly unique experience to see the exploding colors reflecting off the water in

12

such a beautiful natural area,” said one first time visitor. Fireworks are launched from the Detroit Flats area, and spectators watch from aboard boats in the lake, from campgrounds, in town and even the surrounding hills. The Detroit Lake Recreation Area Business Association (DLRABA) sponsors the event each year, with help from vendor Western Fireworks. “In 2013, our fireworks show cost $10,000. For 2014, we started planning for the event in winter and increased the budget by 10%, raising the cost to $11,000,” said Holly Campbell of DLRABA. “The expenses for the fireworks are primarily covered by proceeds from the Detroit Lake Fishing Derby and a private fundraiser hosted by The Elwood Family to pay for the event.” Their next event is the Detroit Lake Water Ski Show on August 16th and 17th. See page 8-9 for more info about the water ski show.

just

At Detroit Lake, even the wildlife stops to check out the show.
