CLASSOF2022

Congratulations to the Class of 2022 on their outstanding success, not only academically, but also in their sporting, music and other cocurricular activities, and their effective leadership of the school community Amongst this cohort was the largest ever group of students to be recognised for spending at least 12 years at The Cathedral School – 33 of them! At the Back to School BBQ in January this year, Nicholas Pang was named as Dux of School, leading an amazing cohort of seven students with an ATAR score greater than 99. The results across the whole year group were outstanding and the most impressive we have seen at The Cathedral School.

SCHOOLNEWS

2023 will be the final year at the school for Principal, Mr Ian Gamack. Now completing his third 5-year term as Principal, he is the longest-serving lay Principal in the history of The Cathedral School. The period since Ian, his wife Diana, and children Madeleine and James arrived in January 2009 has been one of significant development in all areas of the school, from academic and cocurricular programs to school facilities and management. We will have opportunities to recognise and celebrate all of that as the year progresses. The School Board now faces the difficult task of finding a suitable replacement to lead the school into the future.

2023REUNIONWEEKEND

Get your friends together for the annual school reunion weekend on 22-23 July. Foundation Day will be celebrated by the school community on Friday with a school service and the highly anticipated Lagoon Dash, followed by the Sundowner by the Lagoon – a great opportunity for past students and current school families to relax and mingle with drinks and finger food. On Saturday we will host a school tour and a relaxed Reunion Lunch We look forward to welcoming you to this year’s reunion weekend

Throughout the year, I will be travelling widely throughout north and west Queensland in our flash new boarding/marketing HiLux. I will be hosting Past Student Sundowners in various centres, so watch Facebook for dates and locations.

ANGLICAN SCHOOLS MUSIC FESTIVAL

The inaugural Northern Region Anglican Schools Music Festival was proudly hosted by The Cathedral School over the weekend of 27-29 January. The event allowed students from The Cathedral School, All Souls St Gabriels, Trinity Anglican School and Whitsunday Anglican School to collaborate with fellow musicians and teachers from other schools and work with industry professionals. The weekend culminated in a collaborative concert.

YEAR 11 DEVELOPMENT DAYS

For the past 10 years, the Year 11 students have participated in a development program that culminates in a special dinner dance where students perform as couples and House groups On 17 February, the students showcased the skills learnt under their dynamic dance instructors, Narelle and Simon Midson and choreographer, Bonnie Nicholas. The time spent together as a year group allows the students to learn more about themselves and to develop better relationships with their peers as they prepare for their demanding final years at school.

HOUSE SPIRIT AWARDS

After a year’s Covid interruption, we were again able to present the PSA House Spirit trophies at the Interhouse Swimming Carnivals. Chatham was victorious in the Senior School, and Langton cheered the loudest at the Middle School carnival. The Junior School award will be presented after their Other Strokes Carnival in Term 4.

VALENTINES DAY

The Cathedral School Leo Club shared the love again on Valentines Day, delivering roses and serenades to their peers and holding a ‘bake sale’ of sweet treats The event raised $900 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

PAST STUDENT NEWS

KA CHUN (TRISTAN) KUN – CLASS OF 2017

I was an international boarder at Cathedral in Years 11-12 in 2016 and 2017 I have now finished my degree at UQ majoring in Exercise and Nutrition Sciences and am currently studying Master of Secondary Education at JCU. I am interested in education because I like to help students achieve their goals and see them improve over time. My favourite memories of school are definitely from the time in boarding, because all my mates were a door away and we really had a great time. The most useful thing I learnt at school was being independent. As an international student, it can be hard to fit into the new environment, make friends and achieve academic success

In my free time, I enjoy playing basketball with my friends and having fun fishing with my family and friends. When I am in Hong Kong, I enjoy trying out different cafes to enjoy the coffee.

My advice to students today is to enjoy and cherish your school life as much as possible because you will never have a second chance to do high school and spend so much time with your friends and teachers. All the experience you gain from school will nourish your future career and life.

FROM THE ARCHIVES- THE SCHOOL POOL

Did you know that the school pool used to have a diving board and there was an annual interhouse diving competition? It was held at the end of Term 4, but there are very few references to it in Dawn magazines, as they had already been sent for printing by then.

The school pool was opened in October 1959, just one year after the school moved to the Mundingburra site. It has served the school well as a sporting and recreational facility for more than 60 years, albeit with some major refurbishments and upgrades. Many past students can remember the days when the pool had to be drained for cleaning – the boarders would spend the weekend with hoses, brooms and scrubbing brushes to make it sparkle again.

The diving board was removed in the late 1990’s as new Workplace Health and Safety regulations deemed that the water was not deep enough to dive into! However, we are not aware of any injuries in the 40 years it was in use.
