19 March 2024 It’s 20 years since Compton Verney, an 18th-century manor in Warwickshire became an art gallery, showcasing an impressive permanent collection and regular exhibitions. Now its 120-acre parkland is turning into a sculpture park with new commissions and iconic works, including a seven-foot bronze spider by Louise Bourgeois. Other highlights include YBA Sarah Lucas’s monumental bronze horse and cart carrying oversized marrows, and French artist Nicholas Deshayes’ fountain-like aluminium coiled knots.

23 March 2024 – 24 March 2024 A new food festival arrives in Somerset, mashing local gourmet produce with a dollop of sound advice. Get there early to try a chunk of the handmade cheeses from nearby Park Farm in Kelston, like the nutty, creamy Wyfe of Bath. Or taste a slice of the local dried beef bresaola from Exeter’s Good Game Charcuterie, based in Topsham restaurant Pig and Pallet. Experts on tap include The Great British Bake Off star, Briony May Williams.

For an exuberant and historic community experience, head to Bressay; the Shetland island marks the end of the Yule season with its annual Viking fire festival, Up Helly Aa. Look for the marches throughout the day of squads dressed as Vikings. Then join the noisy torchlit procession at Bressay Hall that follows the galley (built and painted by locals) to where it is burned, before heading back for all-night music and dancing. Be at the hall early. Out of the 12 various Up Helly Aa events held across the Scottish isles, Bressay's is the only one where visitors can hold a torch in the procession. Torchbearers are allowed on a first-come firstserved basis.

12 March 2024 – 15 March 2024 Make the most of this year’s Cheltenham Festival, as it’s the Gold Cup’s centenary. Arrive in style by helicopter and plan the day as smartly as you dress. Bookend the Gold Cup and other races at the Club Enclosure, mixing with the jockeys, trainers and their horses in the Parade Ring and bag the best winning view. Finedine at Clare Smythe’s Core on Course restaurant with its six tasting courses.

Check out the runners and riders for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris as top athletes from over 130 countries compete in 26 events, from hurdles, high jump to shot put. Revisit some heroes and heroic moments too, as kit, medals and more from champions and record-breakers are exhibited at the nearby St Enoch Centre from the online Museum of World Athletics.

Head to the River Thames as the fiercely fought 4.2-mile boat race between Oxford and Cambridge Universities rows from Putney Embankment to Chiswick Bridge. Find a hotspot along the route to watch the action; one that has plenty of outdoor space, such as the Duke's Head pub. Located at the starting line, it's the neighbourhood social magnet and the place to meet well-heeled locals as well as try hearty British fare (think: braised rabbit hotpot). For a more chic experience, Putney’s London Rowing Club is throwing a VIP party. Just don’t forget the blazer.

Nestling behind Buckingham Palace lies the Royal Mews, home to the royal carriages, cars and horses. There’s the gleaming Gold State Coach (pictured above), last used for the King’s coronation, the 1902 State Landau that ferried the Prince and Princess of Wales (then Duke and Duchess of Cambridge) to the palace after their wedding ceremony, as well as the State Rolls-Royce Phantom, with oversized windows so the royals can be seen. The Royal Mews is set around a stately quadrangle, offering close-ups of iconic vehicles and a chance to sit in replicas.

In our colour-drenched, Instagramfiltered age, the gallery is going back to basics with an ethereal black-and-white photo show. They're pitting two iconic portrait artists against each other for the first time: Margaret Cameron (1815–79), who pioneered the medium in the late 19th century; and 1970s innovator Francesca Woodman (1958–81), known for her haunting, often blurry self portraits. Delve into Scottish history as Perth’s £27 million museum opens. Some significant national treasures will be on display. The most prominent one being the Stone of Destiny, an oblong block of pinkish sandstone that has sat underneath the Coronation Chair at every English coronation since 1308, including for Charles III. Artefacts from Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Jacobite Rebellion are also on show, including a sword made by a Perth artisan. Discover local stories too – like those of the suffragettes.

Ever since Bridgerton hit the small screen, Queen Charlotte has catapulted into superstar status. Now there’s a chance to explore a more intimate – and authentic – side of her life. Within Kew Gardens, the stylish Kew Palace houses the rustic cottage and kitchens where she and George III retreated from court dramas. It's open to 29 September. For more royal revelations from 24 May, head south to Hampton Court Palace, as Cardinal Wolsey’s six rooms have had a makeover. Through art, fashion, jewellery and other objects, the display tells the story of Henry VIII’s early reign. Major works to watch out for include The Field of the Cloth of Gold.

To 8 September 2024 Many fashionistas like Twiggy remember visiting the seven-storey Biba store along London’s Kensington High Street, with its exciting trove of leopard-print coats, trouser suits, puffed-sleeve A-line minidresses, floppy hats, and more. Now this epicentre of the Swinging Sixties is back in the spotlight, with an exhibition of its history under founder Barbara Hulanicki at Bermondsey’s Fashion and Textile Museum. A purplecord coat with faux-fur cuffs and collar is a highlight.

27 April 2024 A 19th-century tradition comes alive in the medieval town of Cardigan, West Wales on the last Saturday in April. Harking back to its farming traditions, Barley Saturday commemorates the local farmers who came to town to hire workers and inspect stallions for breeding. Horses still are the event’s focus, with morning competitions and a 2pm parade around the town (where horses pass landmarks like Cardigan Castle), followed by vintage cars, tractors, carriages, motorbikes and more. Go for afternoon tea at 1176 in the Norman castle grounds.

25 April 2024 – 20 October 2024 Bold, colourful art is what to expect at Tate Modern’s Expressionists show, as it explores the work of Wassily Kandinsky, his lover, Gabriele Munter, and their illustrious friends like Paul Klee who made up Der Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider in English) group in Munich in the early 20th century. Highlights include Kandinsky’s early pre- and early abstract work, and the work of many women artists who were ahead of the times – like Marianne von Werefkin’s 1909 dancer.

— Busking, open-mic sessions and a performance by the oldest Céili band in Ireland (Kilfenora), are just some of the ways to celebrate Celtic culture this month. Set in the tiny town of Carlow, South East Ireland, the festival marks 50 years of lively music and competitions. And it’s not just the Irish Celtic traditions to enjoy; discover those of Cornwall, the Isle of Man, Scotland, Wales and Brittany too. Consider learning some traditional Breton steps or listening to a lunchtime choral concert. Make time to visit local landmarks too, like the prehistoric Celtic stone monument, Brownshill Dolmen.

Among the many music festivals, the biennial Sonorities Festival throughout Belfast stands out as arguably the most experimental – bringing together international musicians, composers and sound artists to make as well as present their avant-garde work. Take the sound walk in Belvoir Forest Park (south of the city centre), an experience by local cellist Tom Hughes that encourages groups of walkers to improvise, while a choreographer incorporates skips and shuffles to the marching steps.

Head to the harbour at Porthleven on the Cornish coast, as this picturesque fishing port town hosts a top-notch food festival. Glean some tips from local and Michelin-starred chefs at demos and bite into the local food at the many stalls or banquets. There’s even a tent celebrating the fabled Cornish pasty: a shortcrust pastry with crimped edges filled with vegetables and beef. Live bands add to the festival vibe. Local restaurants worth sampling including Kota: set in an historic building on the harbour head, its tasty international dishes include caviar, potato oyster fritters and Peking duck.

Party to live Scottish bands at this annual music festival on the Hebridean Isle of Mull. Up-and-coming folk-rock duo The Laurettes are on the lineup, and so is the family trad trio Atlantic Reel, as well as popand-rock cover-band The Fold. Performances are staged across the island’s 18th-century port town Tobermory, where you can enjoy hotspots like the 17thcentury Bellachroy Inn. Don't miss the Mishnish: the yellow part of the colourful buildings set in a row on the seafront. And for langoustine lovers, head to the harbour for Macgochans, where they also have king scallops and other locally caught food.

Unlike Princess Diana's former butler, Paul Burrell, royal servants usually stay behind the scenes. Now Kensington Palace’s latest exhibition is placing them centre stage, exploring the lives of royal servants and what they did. Consider the 1770s keeper of the ice and snow, who cut ice for drinks. Servants who feature in famous artworks are uncovered too; such as George I’s keeper of the privy purse, Mehmet von Könsigstreu – painted in his blue coat along the King’s Staircase.

It’s the smart steeplechase at the Aintree racecourse in Liverpool, North West England, where 34 horses and their riders jump over 16 fences, ditches and water; where the style stakes are high as the racing. The cuisine is also finely tuned; try The Art School restaurant, which serves a sixcourse tasting menu and fine Charles Heidsieck Champagne throughout the afternoon. Although don’t miss the start of the Grand National race, held at 5.15pm sharp. Top tip: be there early for a walking tour of the tough 4.2-mile course.

Discover new parts of Manchester as the RHS opens a new horticultural show in the Depot Mayfield. There will be no sprauncy show garden here, instead, the focus will be on small-space urban gardening and houseplants. Buy the next hanging houseplant or orchid from one of the exhibiting plant nurseries. Practical workshops will also help beef up gardening skills. Other inspiring local gardens include the Fletcher Moss Park in Didsbury, with its rare trees and birds (like the ancient cormorant species with their vibrant plumage); and the RHS Garden Bridgewater in Salford, which includes England's largest Victorian walled garden.

This time the art-drenched stately home is opening its rooms and gardens to the twisted stacked sculptures of British artist Tony Cragg. Stay overnight at a nearby cottage like the stone-clad Chanting Hill Farmhouse in Welburn to visit historic York with its majestic Gothic cathedral and medieval shopping street.

He has been collecting photos with his husband David Furnish since 1991, and they have amassed over 7,000 works. Many of the pieces are iconic: Elton John's February sale at Christie’s included a Cindy Sherman Film Still. Trafalgar Square in London is the place to be during the weekend of 10 May as the National Gallery celebrates its 200th birthday. The collection started with 38 paintings including a Rembrandt self-portrait and now has over 2,300 works. Iconic paintings on display range from Titian’s mythological Bacchus and Ariadne to Van Gogh’s bright yellow Sunflowers. While there, see the current exhibition, 'The Last Caravaggio', dissecting the artist's last painting; moody and dramatic, it’s in London for the first time in 20 years.

Foraging for wild food along the River Wye bank, decorating a clay pot and making a puppet for Monmouth’s parade are some unusual activities of this biennial festival. As the programme follows this long winding river from southeastern to central Wales (think Chepstow to Hereford), pick events to explore different locations. Don’t miss the landmarks, either, such as Tintern Abbey and its equally medieval neighbour the Anchor Inn, where the steak and ale pie is worth tucking into.

longer-term and positive impact on mind and body.” More recently, Peigin is turning her focus to women – especially their experience with menopause. “My motivation is selfish, as I was inspired by my own menopausal journey. I realised that my education around it was so poor. “Through my learning, it became apparent to me that women could and should celebrate their midlife. Equipping myself with the knowledge to move with the change and make friends with it rather than struggling privately is hugely empowering.” Everything from aromatherapy sleep rituals to grounding gift sets make up the special Menopause Collection. Slowing down is so important – if lockdown taught us anything, it’s that we need to do far less than we think.” This realisation inspired her to craft treatments to help other people going through similar experiences. “Our passion at GROUND is to deliver carefully developed massage rituals to bring a little relief from things like insomnia, anxiety, menopausal and pregnancy symptoms and digestive issues,” she says. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, each of their spa treatments is skillfully created to support the body’s functions naturally. “Our mission is to train therapists in advanced massage so that they have the right support, knowledge and expertise. They’re empowered to meet each client where they’re at on their wellbeing journey.” It’s what Peigin calls a ‘thinking’ therapist – developing the ability to listen to the body and identify what’s needed using a toolkit of solutions. “With all GROUND treatments, it’s not just about locally tending to aches and pains in the muscles – though they will also do that – but rather the focus is on soothing the nervous system and the body as a whole to provide a

Peigin and her team also developed a family of products for people experiencing cancer and cancer treatment. The Barróg Collection (which means ‘the hug’ in Irish) aims to bring comfort and specific relief to compromised skin – think calming scalp-relief oils for those who have lost their hair, and nourishing body oils to encourage skin recovery. “Our journey began with Christine Clinton, founder and CEO of Christine Clinton Cancer Care. Her education company specialises in teaching therapists how to safely and effectively work with clients living with cancer. “As a therapist-led brand, we’d seen firsthand the number of people going through cancer or – posttreatment – being refused hands-on massage therapy in spas. For a long time, misinformation and fear prevented a lot of therapists from working with these clients.

“And yet, in recent years, more research and education from industry leaders has shown that massage is hugely beneficial for people’s emotional and mental wellbeing when they’re going through cancer.”⁠ Another of Peigin’s passions is sustainability. As a selfcare brand devoted to sustaining people, it makes sense that the brand practices what it preaches and is as kind as possible to the planet, too. “We’ve reduced plastic to an absolute minimum,” says Peigin. “We avoid all harmful chemicals and toxins in the products and use only 100% natural plant-based ingredients. It’s clear that her work is helping people through the toughest of times. But, her approach has also enabled her to realise the importance of finding better ways to take care of herself. Her favourite product from the GROUND range is the Deep Sleep Body Balm. “I put it on my feet with a pair of socks, on my chest, hands and wrists before I go to bed. It’s just so comforting and sedative. When you move in the middle of the night, the scent releases even more and lulls you back to sleep.” She also has a couple of rituals that help her switch off and recharge. “I like to take about two baths a week – one always on a Sunday as a ritual. I take an hour to myself and I lock the door.” Breathwork is also central to her routine. This is the term for specific breathing practices that help to calm and settle your body and mind. “It’s how I wake up every morning and how I go to sleep at night. I’ve had to train myself to breathe into the day with gratitude and breathe out of the day setting intentions to sleep deeply and restore my body.” So, with such a strong ethos rooted in empathy, sustainability and compassion, what’s next for GROUND Wellbeing? “We’re growing worldwide,” says Peigin. “We’ve moved into the US and Canadian market, Europe is starting to grow as well and we’ll be moving into the Middle East and Southeast Asia over the next year. “The brand was built during lockdown to help me provide for my family, so it’s crazy to think it’s become something cult that therapists and clients are loving. We’re really at the cutting edge of hands-on therapy and we’re so looking forward to taking it to the next level.”

The reserve is home to various native species, and visitors can expect to see iconic golden eagles hunting high over the mountain ridges, along with red squirrels and pine martens clambering about the trees. Paul has even partnered with the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) to save the Scottish wildcat - with several enclosures for the species on the reserve. Kittens are transferred from the reserve to RZSS’s breed-andrelease centre at Kincraig, where the population is bolstered, ready for liberation into the wild. Sitting proudly in the heart of Alladale Wilderness Reserve is the elegantly restored Victorian lodge and private residence, sleeping up to 14 guests, and located at the end of a 12-mile singletrack road along the Carron River. Offering the ultimate privacy and relaxation, its surrounded by birch and Scots pines. Land Rover Experience Scotland also does a lot of land and track management to enable walkers and cyclists to continue to use the tracks, and they are about to embark on a tree-planting scheme within their centre at Dunkeld. “All areas that we use, walkers, cyclists and horses share the countryside codes of practice,” Will explains. “All tracks exist and are maintained using locally sourced materials; we do not develop new tracks. Many of these trails have existed since Jacobite times and have been used for both estate work and recreational use.” If done well, off-roading shouldn’t leave any trace. “We work closely with the rural sector, and electricity is

not always the answer for various reasons. Still, there will be other means to overcome these issues, which will help protect our environmental future,” explains Will. WITH PAUL WEDGWOOD Dream Escape joins the Edinburgh chef, whose restaurant on the Royal Mile has been a stalwart on the fine-dining scene for over 17 years, for a foraging experience along the rugged coastline of East Lothian Words | Suzy Pope

mell that?” Chef Paul Wedgwood stops along a farm track in the middle of the East Lothian countryside. “I love the smell of nettles. It says the time for foraging has begun.” Breathing in deep, there’s a crisp sweet smell in the air and nothing but birdsong in the trees. An hour outside of Edinburgh, on a Dream Escape foraging experience with chef Paul Wedgwood, we first learn how to harvest the smallest, sweetest leaves at the tip of a nettle without getting stung. “There are so many herbs, roots, mushrooms and edible plants in this area,” he says, gesturing to the

open fields and thick woodlands. “But nettles are my favourite. Nettles pair perfectly with lamb.” Twelve years ago, Paul added a foraged salad to the menu at his namesake restaurant on the Royal Mile, piquing the interest of many customers. “They wanted to know where everything came from. So I thought, hey, people are interested in foraging, it’s not just me.” Now, at the weekend, he leads foraging walks through the countryside just outside Edinburgh. A foraging experience through Dream Escape includes a ramble across some of Scotland’s striking coastal scenery with chef Paul identifying the wild ingredients he

uses in the kitchen. It culminates in a 7-course foraged lunch back at Wedgwood Restaurant. “In this small area, you’ve got ancient woods, disturbed grounds, meadow, salt marshes, sand dunes and rock pools,” Paul says. “It’s like a microcosm of the Scottish Lowlands and the variety of wild herbs and plant life reflects that. Look, here!” He pauses to admire a little plant with a yellow, bulb-like head growing on the dusty farm track. “Pineapple chamomile.” There are around 50 samples to taste during the walk. Pineapple chamomile has a surprisingly tropical taste for Scotland, sweet and fruity with a hint of coconut. Another treasure of the disturbed ground terrain is the

greater plantain – a sprawling weed that blights the patio cracks of most gardens in the UK. “It goes beautifully with spinach,” Paul says. As we approach a gnarled old tree, Paul removes a piece of drainpipe from his rucksack. A pheasant back mushroom the size of a dinner plate sticks out of the bark at the top, and Paul uses the drainpipe as a boost up to harvest it – it will be the star of the foraging tasting menu later. Emerging from the farm track, we pick our way across the salt marshes near the shore. It’s a landscape of lush green and sandy patches where scurvy grass and sea coriander grow. “It’s all about taking only what you need and leaving enough for nature to rewild itself and enough

for everyone else. We don’t want to strip this landscape.” Paul carefully picks a few stalks of scurvy grass, we sample the peppery stems and move on. Tyninghame Beach might be one of lowland Scotland’s best-kept secrets. The long stretch of sand is quiet, even on a sunny Saturday. Paul bounds between the rock pools, Bass Rock shimmering on the horizon behind him. “Just wait for this. This will blow your mind,” he says. “Aha! Here!” Holding up a bedraggled, red piece of seaweed, he grins. “Pepper dulse tastes just like bacon.” After the gentle walk through the countryside, we return to Wedgwood Restaurant. It’s an intimate space in a historic building on one of Edinburgh’s busiest streets. “I’d been looking for a restaurant down south, but there

was a For Sale sign on this little place on the Royal Mile. I spotted it on a night out in Edinburgh and it was just perfect.” Sixteen years later, Paul Wedgwood is still considered one of the top fine-dining chefs in the city, with a litany of awards and accolades. For the foraging tasting menu, venison carpaccio is served with the wood sorrel we picked earlier. “They served venison carpaccio with green ants at Noma when I went, so I thought the sharp citrussy taste of sorrel would work just as well without looking beyond the Scottish countryside,” Paul says. The citrus zap from the sorrel cuts nicely through the iron tang of venison. “The menu isn’t just seasonal,” Paul says. “It’s microseasonal. For example, you won’t see anything on the

Sweet cicely might be like an aniseed ball one week and then sugary sweet the next. Dried hogweed seeds change from bitter orange to cardamom flavoured practically overnight.” The pièce de résistance is the pheasant back mushroom, harvested straight from the tree that morning and served with a light splash of Scots pine oil and celeriac to let the earthy taste of the mushroom shine through. And, tucking into the flaky cod topped with crisped pepper dulse confirms it – the sustainable seaweed from the rock pools of Tyninghame Beach tastes just like bacon. When asked if he is considering branching out beyond Wedgwood Restaurant, Paul says, “Maybe. But I’m happy where I am. Why would I move on when I’ve got an entire wild larder to play with right on my doorstep?”

It’s a recipe that has evolved with me over the years, and when we opened Wedgwood The Restaurant in 2007, it was our first dessert on the menu and has remained unchanged ever since. Here's our most popular and revered sticky toffee pudding recipe to enjoy at home... • Serves 4 • Prep time: 30 minutes • Cooking time: 40 minutes Ingredients • 35g unsalted butter • 115g soft dark-brown sugar • 2 whole eggs • pinch of baking powder • pinch of bicarbonate of soda • 140g self-raising flour

• 1/2 tsp espresso • 100g dates, pitted, chopped • 120ml boiling water Method 1. Preheat oven to 180°C. 2. Cream together butter and sugar, add eggs and combine. 3. Sift baking powder, pinch of Bicarbonate of soda and flour into egg mix, add espresso. 4. Add dates and water to bowl and mix thoroughly until flour completely mixed. 5. Bake in oven for 45 minutes.

Island-hopping

Wildlife spotting at Beinn Eighe

Battlefield

The Culloden

Culloden Battlefield is a historic site that is well-known for the Battle of Culloden that took place in 1746. One of the most prominent features of the site is the large memorial cairn that stands in the centre of the battlefield. The cairn was erected in memory of the thousands of soldiers who lost their lives during the battle. Visitors can pay their respects to those who perished by visiting the cairn and taking a moment to reflect on the events that took place on this historic site.

Mary Ann’s

The breathtaking scenery of Gairloch Beach and the Wester Ross Hills beyond is the reason this location has made our NC500 experiences list, not to mention awe-inspiring Scottish sunsets from its westerly position. The crystal-clear water and the soft sand with the Wester Ross Hills in the background provides a stunning backdrop, and so remember to take your camera. It's a must-visit spot for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the beauty of Scotland's natural landscape.

Ullapool Harbour has plenty of shops, restaurants, and cafes to explore. The harbour is a hub for fishing boats and ferries, making it a great place to watch the ships come and go. Additionally, Dream Escape will arrange a boat trip for you to explore the nearby islands of the Outer Hebrides.

Visiting castles and gardens

Castles are a big part of the North Coast 500 experience. The Castle of Mey, Dunrobin Castle, and Castle Leod are just a few examples of impressive castles to visit. Skibo Castle

Skibo Castle, located in the Scottish Highlands, is a beautiful 19th-century house that was built between 1899 and 1903 by

Andrew Carnegie, one of the richest people in history. The castle was the venue of Madonna's wedding and has seen many esteemed guests, including R Kipling, King Edward VII, Elgar, Paderewski, Rockerfellers, and even Helen Keller. Carnegie himself described the castle as "Heaven on Earth," and interestingly, all mirrors and door handles were low to suit his height of only 5'2". Skibo Castle enjoys a unique microclimate, with mild weather and low rainfall due to the 'fone' - a westerly airflow that is dried and warmed in the lee of the mountains. The castle features unheated greenhouses, and food is brought to the house by a model train. In 1990, Peter de Savary bought the house and grounds and turned it into the Skibo Club, a private residential sporting club with 300 members. Guests at Skibo Castle are awoken by the sound of bagpipes, and after dinner, they are entertained by Carnegie's organ.

Beautiful to behold, the frothing, fizzing, foaming flow of a waterfall is one of nature’s most impressive spectacles. Here are some of our Dream Escape favourites…

tanding by a waterfall, watching the endlessly falling whitewater and listening to that rushing, roaring, thundering sound, in awe of its power, is an uplifting experience. And it’s beneficial, too. The air around waterfalls has the highest concentration of negative ions found in nature. These are atmospheric molecules charged with electricity, and exposure to them can ease stress, regulate mood and even reduce depression. Watching the unceasing cascade is mesmerising, as is the ‘white noise’ sound, used in sleep apps for its soothing and relaxing properties. Although the water flow may not be at its fiercest in the summer months, it’s the best time to be spritzed with that fresh, cooling spray – and to enter the world behind the waterfall and gaze out through that misty curtain.

Scotland

On the Isle of Skye beneath the Black Cuillins are the famous Fairy Pools (pictured right). This series of small falls are renowned for colour and clarity: turquoise so clear that you can pick out mossy pebbles in the depths. Some are swimmable – brrr! Further north is Mealt Falls, which cliff68

dives from Loch Mealt to the rocky coast below. From here you can also see Kilt Rock, with its pleated-effect basalt folds (pictured next page). Dream Escape will also take you off the beaten path to more peaceful falls without the crowds, such as Glen Brittle and Sligachan Waterfalls - or on a boat charter to explore the stunning coastline of the Isle of Skye from the water on a luxury sea tour. We may have poet Robert Burns to thank for the gorgeously wooded landscape at the Falls of Bruar at the southern edge of the Cairngorms National Park, in Perthshire. When he visited in 1787, Burns found the surroundings somewhat bare and was inspired to write, 'The Humble Petition of Bruar Water' to the landowner, the 4th Duke of Atholl. Written from the water’s viewpoint, it entreats: ‘Would then my noble master please/To grant my highest wishes/He’ll shade my banks wi’ tow’ring trees/ And bonie spreading bushes.’ The Duke took Burns’s advice and, in an innovative forerunner of modern seed bombs, he fired Scots pine and larch seeds from the opposite bank from a cannon. The lowest fall of peat-brown water through the forested rocky gorge has an arched stone bridge, and a natural rock span just downstream.

Located by the Falls of Bruar is the most famous Scottish country clothing brand, House of Bruar, which houses a fabulous food hall – perfect for picnic essentials. Around the Falls of Clyde in this species-rich wooded gorge, near New Lanark, southeast of Glasgow, you might spot kingfishers, dippers and ravens, with swooping bats, badgers and even otters. But the main attractions are the four waterfalls within four miles. At 88ft high, Corra Linn is the second one you’ll see, and the most spectacular. It was described by William Wordsworth as ‘the Clyde’s most majestic daughter’. Just upstream is Scotland’s first hydroelectric power station, harnessing the power of the falls to power textile mills in New Lanark, completed in 1927.

Northern Ireland

Near Ballymena, Co Antrim, in Glenariff, largest of the nine glens of Antrim, are no fewer than nine viewing points for three waterfalls on a choice of four walking routes (Glenariff's

Wooden fenced boardwalks and flights of steps allow close-up views of the falls, where white froth and foam contrasts against the dark waters, the lush foliage lining the gorge; and possibly even local wildlife, such as red squirrels, hen harriers and Irish hares. At the top of the walkable area, enjoy more expansive views down to the Irish Sea and across it to the Mull of Kintyre in Scotland.

North England

Thundering 65ft down a craggy rock face, Aira Force in Cumbria is formed by Aira Beck (stream) making its way down the fells to Ullswater. ‘Force’ or ‘foss’ comes from the Old Norse word for waterfall. Dream Escape will take you on a guided walk along the waterfall trail for the best view of the walls and the two stone bridges arching over the plummeting water. Lake District, Windermere's Stock Ghyll Force and Skelwith Force during a picnic adventure with native Lakeland Fell ponies, following part of an old packhorse route through meadows, woods and fell. Much more impressive than its more westerly namesake is County Durham’s High Force. This awe-inspiring 70ft cascade, where the River Tees plunges over a vertical cliff of blocky whinstone, is the UK’s largest volume of water falling over an unbroken drop, when in full spate. The stunning view was painted by JMW Turner in 1816. The north side is privately owned, and Dream Escape will arrange for you to enjoy its mighty power and unforgettable beauty with special out-of-hours access to the waterfall. The easy-to-follow walk to Hareshaw Linn (‘linn’ is old dialect for waterfall), near Bellingham in Northumberland National Park, passes through a formerly industrial landscape, now reclaimed by nature. The path winds up the damp, deep gorge, lush with ferns, mosses, liverworts and lichen cloaking damp boulders and branches, crossing Hareshaw Burn, a tributary of the North Tyne, via six bridges, offering beautiful views of the bubbling burn beneath. By the sixth bridge, there is a tree stump studded with coins, for good luck. Follow the sound around the bend, down stone-slab steps to the Linn, tumbling down over the 30ft sandstone cliff to the pool below. The Peak District National Park has plenty of waterfalls. South West England

On the North Devon coast near Hartland, and accessible on foot via the South West Coast Path, you can enjoy the rare, spectacular sight of white, tumbling waters on a coastal cliff. In a ruggedly beautiful area of hanging valleys and high cliffs, Speke’s Mill Mouth waterfall drops 157ft over a sheer cliff edge, then tumbles downward over boulders onto the rock-slabbed beach to meet the sea. At the head of the Bride Valley in Dorset lie the thatched cottages of the picturesque village of Littlebredy. (It really is little, too: population around 100.) As part of Bridehead House’s 19th-century garden redesign, the river was dammed to create a lake, and from here it flows through the grounds and then gushes noisily over a drop (pictured above). South East England

The southeast of England is not renowned for its mountains, so waterfalls are, naturally, hard to find. The next best thing is the constructed Grand Cascade within the grounds of Blenheim

Palace, designed by the renownedly naturalistic landscape gardener Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown in the 1760s. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it forms part of a complex dam structure at the western end of the lake he created across the estate, with a delicate arched bridge offering the perfect photo opportunity. Home to the Dukes of Marlborough, Blenheim is the former home of Sir Winston Churchill, who was born here.

Wales

In Bannau Brycheiniog (previously known as the Brecon Beacons) National Park is an area known as ‘waterfall country’, with Britain's greatest concentration of cascades, caves and gorgeous gorges. The Four Falls Trail takes in Sgwd (Welsh for ‘waterfall’) Clun-Gwyn, Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn, Sgwd y Pannwr and Sgwd yr Eira. The last, which means ‘waterfall of snow’, is the best known, most popular, and the most photographed – not least because you can experience the thrill of walking behind the cascading curtain of water. Be prepared: you’ll almost certainly get wet on the rough and slippery path used by sheep farmers – but it’s worth it! Pistyll Rhaeadr, meaning ‘spring of the waterfall’, lies in the Berwyn Mountains, just inside Wales, in Powys, west of Oswestry and Shrewsbury at the end of a narrow singletrack road. At 240ft high, it’s often hailed as Britain’s highest singledrop waterfall, although some argue that the drop is in three stages. Either way it’s a breathtaking sight: a narrow white ribbon falling behind a water-hewn stone arch. From the top you can see Snowdonia to the west and the hills of Shropshire to the east.

Skellig Michael

Skellig Michael is a breathtakingly beautiful and historically significant location that was home to devout Christian monks seeking extreme isolation between the 6th and 8th centuries. Consisting of Skellig Michael (Sceilig Mhichíl) and its smaller sister, Little Skellig (Sceilig Bheag), the Skellig Islands are Europe’s secondmost westerly point, surpassed only by the Blasket Islands. Over the years, Skellig Michael has attracted visitors from all over the world, including Norway's first king, Olaf Tryggvasson, who was reportedly baptised on the island. Literary legend George Bernard Shaw also visited Skellig Michael and described it as an "incredible, impossible, mad place" that was "part of our dream world." Brú na Bóinne and Newgrange

If you're looking for Ireland's most famous passage tomb, then look no further than Newgrange. Its pagan architects crafted a building that predates even the pyramids at Giza, and while its grass-covered exterior is stunning, what's truly exciting is what's inside. On the winter solstice (the shortest day of the year in Northern Europe) on December 21st, a beam of sunlight enters through a roof box, creating a beautifully illuminated inner chamber and one of

The audience permitted to view the winter solstice from inside Newgrange is selected by lottery, due to the modestly sized inner chamber and the vast interest. However, visitors can still gather on the hill and watch the sun illuminate this Neolithic monument, just as it has done for over 5,000 years. MYTH OF THE GIANT'S CAUSEWAY

As legend has it, Northern Ireland was once home to a giant named Finn McCool. He created a causeway to get across the Irish Sea to face his rival Benandonner. However, Benandonner is a massive giant, much bigger than Finn! In order to save himself, Finn retreats to Ireland and is disguised as a baby by his quick-thinking wife. When Benandonner arrives, he sees Finn disguised as a baby and realises that if a mere baby is that big, the father must be far larger than Benandonner himself! Following this realisation, Benandonner rushed back to Scotland, ripping up much of the Causeway as he fled back to Scotland, leaving what you see today, and thus, the myth of the Giant’s Causeway was born. enquiries@dreamescape.co.uk

cotland is a perfect destination for sustainable visits and days out, thanks to its many ecofriendly options. One such hidden gem is Brucefield Estate in Clackmannanshire, which is tucked away in 1000 acres of woodland and meadows, providing visitors with a perfect opportunity for a wildlife walk. During my visit, I was fortunate enough to go on a walk with the owner, Victoria Bruce-Winkler, who is an estate manager and biologist. Her primary focus is on conservation, preserving the rare flora and fauna, and regenerating the estate for a new generation. The highlight for me was planting my very own Aspen Sapling. Brucefield is an ideal place to stop for a hike through the woods and have a ‘bothy’ style lunch on the way to Inverness, Loch Ness and Skye. It is a haven for walkers and nature lovers, with a variety of stunning trails and habitats just waiting to be explored. Another one of my favourite places – Dawyck Botanic Garden – is a perfect place for a day out, where you can explore the beautiful gardens while
