KEEP THOSE FUR BABIES SAFE!!

It is that time again, where we can’t have the dogs out for too long. I recently noticed that my Olde English Bulldogge’s paws were a little like sand paper. So I did some research and found some balm I can use, but he really hates it. My boy loves to chase, catch, and run for his tennis ball. In fact, that is ALL he cares about. Those of you local to me know this is for certain!! I have published a few things this month in the pet section on the impotance of keeping them cool in these torturous weather condistions. I hope if you have pets to pleasae check out the pet section. Keep them from harm!! Have a great month. Until next month!!

Diesel. The crazy tennis ball player!!

CLEARWATER BEACH Clearwater Beach is a very popular and busy beach with a long list of "Best Beach" honors. In addition to meticulously groomed beaches and tons of beach amenities, Clearwater Beach offers many additional attractions. Fishing, dolphin-watching and leisure charters are available close-by. You can also visit the famous dolphin Winter who lives at the nearby Clearwater Aquarium. Some of the best seafood restaurants in the Tampa Bay area are found here including perennial favorite, Frenchy's. There are also a wide variety of clubs and nightlife including two-story dance club, The Wave, at Shepherd's Beach Resort. There are always events going on and every evening people gather at The Pier to take part in the sunset celebration that includes entertainment and a craft market.

ST. PETE BEACH

St. Pete Beach truly has something for everyone and was named “One of America’s Top 10 Best Beach Towns” by Parents magazine. Yes, it has white sand beaches and warm Gulf waters, but it’s the extras that make this beach special. There are plenty of beach-side amenities including restaurants, Tiki bars, cabana rentals, jet ski rentals and other adventure opportunities. If you’re staying overnight there are plenty of full-service resorts and boutique hotels lining the beach. Explore the shopping opportunities along historic Corey Avenue and take some time to tour the beautiful Don Cesar Resort. This huge pink Mediterranean-style hotel was built during the jazz-age and has been the standard of luxury ever since.

Art at Every Corner.. You see it on the streets and feel it in the air. It is everywhere in St. Pete/Clearwater, the energy is undeniable. It is walkable from wherever you are. There are many art districts making it easy to encounter a diversityof art, from worldclass Dali Museum to the Chihuly Collection to working studios of respected and local upcoming artists. The vibe continues throughout the destination at places like Dunedin to Tarpon Springs. Art is everywhere waiting to be discovered. For more info visit pinellascounty.org

Scientific Breakthrough in

Auto Scratch Repair

Eliminates Big Body Shop Bills!

T

Repairs up to 80% less and completed in 30 minutes

his amazing discovery, a patented process called “Sprayless Scratch Repair” can repair scrapes and scratches to your auto paint within 30 minutes with virtually no signs of any damage.

Garage Door Meets Fender….

John Ford had been shopping around for auto body repair due to an ugly 2 inch scratch on his fender. It seems his wife Nellie was pulling the vehicle out of the garage and accidentally scraped against the garage door. Normally the Ford’s would just call the insurance company, but this is the third time the fender had been scraped. It seems the score is 1 John, 2 Nellie.

Many Pay Out of Pocket, Fear Insurance Rise

John decided to forgo the insurance and pay for the repairs out of pocket. After getting three estimates at body shops, Johns lowest bid was $600 to fix the ugly scratch. A few days later Mr. Ford was at Rick Matthews Buick, GMC on S.R. 50 in Brooksville for an oil change appointment. To his luck, all vehicles serviced at Rick Matthews receive a free hand wash at the auto detailing shop.

The owner, John Freshwater spotted the damage on the front fender and offered to repair the damage using a new breakthrough in scratch repair technology called SSR.

Up To 80% Lower Cost Than Repainting Most damage can be repaired starting at just $29.99. For over 3 years and almost 2000 scratched vehicles later, Fresh Water Detailing are the experts in scratch repair. Mr. Ford sent us a letter after the repair.

The

Connection Magazine Is Your Dog Scared of Thunder? 6 Tips for Soothing Him

Why do certain dogs become fearful of loud noises such as thunder and fireworks, but others remain unruffled? Nobody’s completely sure. In some cases, puppyhood trauma (such as being tied up outside for long intervals) may have something to do with it. Some owners claim that specific breed temperaments may play a role, and in other cases, sensitive hearing or separation anxiety may contribute. What’s certain is that for some canines, a minor case of nerves can escalate into a fullblown phobia — an excessively panicked, irrational, chronic fear response. 1. Watch your own behavior during a thunderstorm If you remember nothing else, remember this: Constant petting or consoling is often interpreted by pets as a reward for the fearful response — or reinforcement that the fearful response is warranted. Conversely, punishment will only increase a panicked pet’s anxiety level. Our solution? Projecting a calm, cool vibe and giving Grant attention in the form of playing, grooming, or other activities he normally enjoys. 2. Use the Thundershirt to lessen your dog’s fear of thunder. Not to state this too strongly, but the Thundershirt is a miracle. This snug garment (available online or at most pet-supply stores) attaches around Grant’s body with Velcro and produces a “swaddling” effect that calms down his panicked panting. It often begins working within minutes, and on a few occasions Grant has actually drifted off to sleep (yes!). Complementary therapies we sometimes use include Rescue Remedy, which is based on calming Bach flower essences, and Ark Naturals Happy Traveler, a botanically based chew that can produce a calming effect. You can also try calming essential oils or pheromones, such as the canine-calming pheromone DAP. This can be found in Comfort Zone products. 3. Switch environments when it starts to thunder Changing your pet’s location can be surprisingly effective, because it may help reduce the storm’s volume level or make your pet less aware of it. Grant, for instance, likes to hang out on the bathroom rug with the overhead fan droning away whenever it storms outside. This creates a “white noise” that blocks out the sounds that disturb him.

crate door open so your pet won’t feel confined (which can dramatically increase anxiety). 4. Increase exercise before a thunderstorm starts When thunderstorms are predicted, we try to take Grant for a few extra walks before the clouds roll in. This helps to tire him both mentally and physically. Many vets claim that it can also boost natural serotonin levels, which then act as a natural calming aid. 5. Use counterconditioning during a thunderstorm This fancy behavioral term simply means we help Grant to associate something negative (the thunderstorm) with something positive. For example, we keep Grant’s all-time favorite toy hidden away and bring it out to play when he begins to feel nervous about an approaching storm. We’ll sometimes feed him an extra-special treat during these times, as well, such as a small piece of bacon or cheese. This diverts his focus, and enjoying the treat/toy during the storm has gradually helped to recondition his response. 6. Try desensitization if your dog is scared of thunder We practice this during the off-season for thunderstorms, usually over the winter. To begin, simply play a CD or iPod mix of storm sounds at an extremely soft level. While your dog remains relaxed at this level, say a simple cue word like “chill” and provide a yummy treat every 15 seconds or so. Then, gradually extend the time your pet needs to remain relaxed before earning the treat. Once your pup can remain relaxed on command, increase the volume a single notch and repeat the process. If at any time your pet shows pronounced fear or panic, go back to the previous volume level, say the cue word, and reward for staying calm. When an actual storm takes place, continue using this same cue/reward system. Grant exhibits a fairly intense fear response when it comes to thunderstorms. The good news is we’ve managed to help him cope without resorting to the use of pharmaceuticals. If none of these approaches work for you, have a candid conversation with your vet. In extreme cases, there are medications that can help keep your pup comfortable. But take a cue from Grant — a little dedication and ingenuity from you may be all that’s necessary to help your canine cope successfully! Marybeth Bittel....

Allowing your pet access to the basement, or a room without windows, may have a similar effect. Some pups find that a closet or the area under the bed feels especially safe and secure. If your pet heads for his crate, try covering it with a blanket to increase feelings of security. However, keep the The Connection Magazine- (727) 605-6046 20

SCALLOPS!!! ITS THAT TIME!!

Keys. The glowing, electric blue eyes running along the edge of their shells make them distinguishable from other bottom dwellers. Scallops can only be harvested by hand or using a landing or dip net. You’ll want to bring along a mesh bag for collecting them and an ice chest for storing them too. Water shoes are also recommended. Bay scallops were once plentiful in Florida but their range has decreased substantially and they have disappeared totally in some areas, so they can only be harvested by recreational anglers now (the commercial harvest has been closed since 1994) and there are strict regulations you must follow:

Scallop harvesting is a popular annual activity that the entire family can enjoy July 1st through September 25th in Hernando County, FL! These delicious little bivalves are fairly easy for beginners to catch (they can swim though so you have to be quick!) using just a mask and snorkel to hunt for them. They are bottom dwellers and live in shallow water (4-8 feet), usually in grass beds, along Florida’s Gulf coast, from Pensacola to the Florida

24

Harvesters are limited to two gallons of unshucked bay scallops (or one pint of bay scallop meat) per person per day. Harvesters aboard a vessel may possess no more than 10 gallons of unshucked scallops (or 1/2 gallon of bay scallop meat) in total at any time. Bay scallops can only be fished in state waters from the Pasco-Hernando county line to the Mexico Beach Canal in Bay County. It is illegal to possess scallops on waters outside open harvest areas or to dock with scallops outside harvest areas. The map below shows the current coastal areas where bay scallop harvest is legal. A dive flag is mandatory while harvesting. A Florida saltwater fishing license is required.

ANGLING ADVENTURES WITH CAPTAIN STEVEN

On the Atlantic Coast, alligators can be found from Florida to coastal North Carolina. Alligators are also found in the Upper Coastal Plain, which includes the Central Savannah River Area of Georgia and South Carolina. As top predators, they are important in controlling prey numbers. Using their tails and snouts to wallow out the muck and push out the vegetation, large alligators construct and maintain gator holes. During the dry season, these gator holes remain filled with water and create a refuge when the surrounding shallow water has dried up. These water holes are an important means of survival for many other animals. Be careful around alligators, they can attack you.
