Shining a spotlight on would-be new stars The 2020 CV Show didn’t happen this year, but the new vans that would have been on show will still be launched later this year, or in 2021 – including a number of new electric vans. Model reveals that we missed included the Citroën ë-Dispatch, Peugeot e-Expert and Vauxhall Vivaro e, as well as Fiat Professional’s eDucato, Toyota’s Proace EV, Maxus’ eDeliver3 and, from the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles stable, the ABT eTransporter and the London Electric Vehicle Company’s VN5. Established electric vans from Nissan and Renault, the eNV200 and Kangoo and Master Z.Es respectively, as well as the Ford Transit Custom PHEV, would also have been in Birmingham. That’s a lot of launches and doesn’t include perennial show non-attendees MercedesBenz, which has just launched its e-Vito. It all goes to highlight how electric and hybrid power trains are slowly but surely working their way into the commercial vehicle sector, and in this issue you can read about some of these in our commercial section. On the car front, pre-lockdown, electric cars were also coming thick and fast. Many brands were in the process of launching PHEV versions of their biggest sellers. Before the

portcullis fell, we spent a week in the Skoda Superb iV, the brand’s first plug-in hybrid; it certainly delivers, both as a car and as a company car tax saver. The DS7 Crossback e-Tense is another plug-in just coming to market and we drive this, too. There is also a road test on the Hyundai Kona EV, while Range Rover has added a PHEV version to its Evoque. In addition you’ll find news on the new Volkswagen Golf 8 and BMW 5 Series, the Lexus UX and Mazda’s first electric car, the MX-30. Away from CV Show stars, we got behind the wheel of the original small electric van, the Nissan e-NV200, and latest Volkswagen Transporter 6.1. And as we mentioned, there’s all the news on the latest van launches, including the Toyota Proace City, as well as the new electric vans from Citroen, Peugeot, Fiat Professional and Maxus, the new name for LDV. We also have a couple of socially distanced Q and As with Toyota’s LCV Manager Gareth Matthews, and Maxus boss Mark Barrett.

Not going green would be a crime, says force Gloucestershire Constabulary has taken delivery of 75 electric vehicles from Nissan, taking its fleet of zero-emission vehicles to over a fifth and reducing its CO2 output by more than 190 tonnes a year. The vehicles include a total of 66 Nissan LEAFs, of which 11 will be marked vehicles, and nine e-NV200s. The force has estimated that the saving in fuel and maintenance will equate to £136,000 a year. Gloucestershire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Martin Surl said: “These new vehicles are a huge step forward for the Constabulary to reduce its carbon and pollution, and meets part of my commitment to ‘A Green and Pleasant County’ that was outlined in my Police and Crime Plan. “The new fleet will save a considerable amount of CO2 and money, giving Gloucestershire a larger percentage of fully-electric vehicles than any other force. I hope we will be able to build on this great work, and extend its electric fleet to 40 per cent within the next four years.”

SEAT is refreshing its successful Ateca with the introduction of the 2020 version. The revamped vehicle adds a refreshed and more emotional appearance both inside and outside, a fully connected user experience, improved levels of safety, comfort and efficiency. New tech and connectivity will offer a more relaxed experience behind the wheel. To date over 300,000 units have been sold – 100,000 in 2019 alone – with more than 35,000 in the UK. “The Ateca is a cornerstone of the our long-term strategy”, said SEAT’s Executive Vice-president for Sales and marketing, Wayne Griffiths. “With the new Ateca 2020, we believe we are in a good position to keep our positive results in the segment”.

Citroën has added to its electrification offensive with a first look at the New ë-C4 – its latest 100% electric vehicle, though petrol and diesel options are available. Fiat has opened reservations for an exclusive new 500 hatchback, the ‘la Prima’, in an electric format. Features include a panoramic glass sunroof, a new rear spoiler and a classic tailgate, and there’s a range of up to 199 miles (WLTP). The new model, says Fiat, is a throwback to the original Cinque, the car that brought personality and fun to sustainable urban mobility back after the Second World War. The high-spec model is marked out by its panoramic glass sunroof which floods the passenger compartment with light, while improving on-board wellbeing. The rear features a classic tailgate and a new more pronounced spoiler, to improve aerodynamic efficiency. Three exclusive paint colours are available: pearlescent Ocean Green; metallic Mineral Grey; and three-layer Celestial Blue. As standard, the ‘la Prima’ model includes full LED headlights, 17-inch diamond-cut wheels, chrome-plated inserts on the side panels, and dashboard and eco-leather seat upholstery. Powered by lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 42kWh, the New 500 has a

range of up to 199 miles in the WLTP cycle. To optimise charging time, the New 500 is equipped with an 85kW fast charge system. It takes only five minutes to build up a sufficient energy reserve to travel 30 miles, more than the average daily commute. Using a fast charger can also power the battery to 80 per cent in just 35 minutes. The unmistakable silhouette of the New 500 shows off the upper profile of the cabin, combining it with the characteristic tilt of the rear edge. It is a more elegant and sculptural exterior than previous generations, with the design complemented by the characteristic chrome slat above the licence plate, the new FIAT insignia and the symbols and horizontal lines in the tailgate. The 500 has ‘Level 2’ automation, with a longitudinally and laterally Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control (iACC) system braking or accelerating in response to cars, cyclists, pedestrians and Lane Centring keeping the vehicle centred. NEW CARS: VOLKSWAGEN GOLF

The one-litre option with plenty of punch Golf brings in 1.0-litre as new entry point to range The new Volkswagen Golf line-up has been given an exciting new option with the addition of a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. The eighth-generation Golf opened for orders in February, with two 1.5-litre petrol engines and two 2.0-litre diesel units on offer. These were quickly followed by an advanced 1.5 eTSI mild-hybrid. And with the arrival of this frugal new powertrain option, VW now has every base covered. The smaller engine also brings down the entry price to the new model, with the Golf Life 1.0 TSI 110 PS 6-speed manual available for £23,300 RRP OTR. With the compact, three-cylinder 1.0-litre turbocharged engine installed, the Golf is able to sprint to 62 mph from standstill in 10.2 seconds, before going on to a top speed of 126 mph (where permitted). The new engine results in the Golf being capable of returning between 49.6-53.3 mpg on the combined WLTP cycle, while emitting between 121-129 g/km of CO2 on the WLTP cycle. This new engine comes with a six-speed manual gearbox and only with Life trim. It features the efficient TSI Miller combustion process and a turbocharger with variable turbocharger geometry. The mild-hybrid version of this engine with standard dual clutch gearbox (DSG) will be available at a later date. The Golf range now starts with the 1.0-litre TSI 110 PS engine in Life trim. It is equipped as standard with 16-inch ‘Norfolk’ alloy wheels and automatic LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, front and rear parking sensors, electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors with memory feature, and keyless start. The Golf Life also features Volkswagen’s sophisticated Innovision Cockpit, which incorporates Digital Cockpit Pro with 10-inch screen into the car’s instrument binnacle, as well as a large and clear 10-inch Discover Navigation touch-screen infotainment system. Finally, standard safety features include Car2X, Adaptive Cruise Control, a Driver Alert System, Dynamic Road Sign Display, Lane Assist and also Front Assist, with extended pedestrian protection measures. This facilitates wireless communication between the new Golf and other Car2X-equipped vehicles on the road, as well as so-called ‘street furniture’, allowing the car to more effectively pre-empt hazards on the road such as stationary traffic ahead, approaching emergency vehicles and more. This is the most important mainstream car to have Car2X fitted as standard to date. As Europe’s best-selling model, the Golf will bring this tech to millions of people. Life is predicted to be the most popular trim for the new Golf in the UK, and is equipped with 16-inch ‘Norfolk’ alloy wheels and automatic LED headlights. Rain-sensing wipers, front and

rear parking sensors, electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors with memory feature, and keyless start add to the convenience of the model, while keyless entry is available as a £400 option. Attractive 10-colour ambient lighting allows the driver to personalise the ambience of their Golf, complementing the ‘Nature Cross’ decorative inserts. Mazda takes electrification to a new level with MX-30 First all-electric model engineered to deliver same driving pleasure Environmental issues tackled by use of vegan seat coverings In a year that sees Mazda celebrate its centenary, Mazda UK is also looking to the future with the launch of the Mazda MX-30. The MX-30 is Mazda’s first all-electric production vehicle and part of an electrification strategy that has already seen Mazda M Hybrid, mild hybrid fitted as standard to the Mazda3 and Mazda CX-30. With its unique freestyle doors, ecological materials and right-sized battery giving a range of approximately 125miles, exceeding the 30 mile average daily drive of the European customer, the Mazda MX-30 marks another positive step in Mazda’s multi-solution approach to reducing emissions following the recent arrival of the innovative Skyactiv-X engine. Commenting on the Mazda MX-30, Yasuhiro Aoyama President & CEO of Mazda Motor

A stylish and versatile crossover, the Mazda MX-30 features an AC synchronous electric motor and a 35.5kWh lithium-ion battery that delivers a range of approximately 124miles and comes with AC charging up to 6.6Kw and DC rapid charging designed to meet 125A Combo Charging standards. Reflecting a unique expression of Kodo design, the MX-30’s styling emphasises the cars beauty as a solid mass, while the freestyle doors and framed glasshouse hint at the open spaciousness of the cabin. The front doors open forward to an angle of 82 degrees, while the rear doors open backwards to an angle of 80 degrees to reveal a stylish and driver

focused interior. Inside, the sense of space is enhanced with a floating centre console that sits independently from the dashboard, while the use of environmentally-friendly materials has been carefully matched to meticulous quality and finish. The cabin has a sense of oneness, flowing from the top of A pillar to the rear end. The colour of the framed top roof makes this feeling even clearer. The freestyle doors give the Mazda MX-30 a distinctive and elegant cabin silhouette, as well as providing customers with easier access to both the front and rear seats. In the interior, the use of eco-friendly materials is prominent, and Mazda has even gone as far as replacing much of the real leather with a vegan alternative. The lower console incorporates a 7-inch colour touch-screen air conditioning control panel, and in a nod to Mazda’s founding as the Toyo Kogyo Cork Company in 1920, the Mazda MX-30 features cork-lined centre console trays and inner side door handles. Harvested from the bark of trees without felling, the use of cork and door trim materials that incorporate fibres from recycled plastic bottles, are perfectly suited to Mazda’s first pure electric production car. Additionally, the DC socket allows for rapid charging up to 50Kw. In this charge mode a charging time of 30 to 40 minutes can deliver up to 80 per cent battery charge. Like every other Mazda, the Mazda MX-30 provides a very natural and responsive driving feel by accelerating, turning and braking exactly as you intend in everyday driving situations. In the Mazda MX-30, this is achieved through the innovative engineering approaches in the e-Skyactiv package. This includes also the battery being rigidly integrated into the vehicle body structure which enhances the overall body stiffness and provides excellent response to the driver’s input. In addition, given the importance of sound to a drivers’ perception of torque and speed, the Mazda engineers have also created an electronic sound system inside the Mazda MX-30 , which is synchronized to motor torque in sound frequency and sound pressure. BMW offers a five-star take on hybrid power Precision, poise and innovation in the latest version of the premium executive class leader This month sees the launch of the all-new BMW 5 Series, a model set to reaffirm its leading position in the premium executive class thanks to a new look, an interior brimming with refinements, cutting-edge innovations and even greater efficiencies, as most models now feature mild-hybrid technology. New interior features include a larger 12.3”

Central Information Display powered by the latest Operating System 7.0, including BMW’s Intelligent Personal Assistant and Smartphone Integration. The new 5 Series also benefits from the latest camera- and radar-based driving assistant systems, including features like steering and lane-control assistant and active cruise control to name just a few. Outside, the new 5 is unmistakably a BMW. It features precise modifications to heighten the car’s distinctive presence and sporting style. The BMW kidney grille has extra width and height, dropping down further into the front apron and framed by a single-piece surround. The slimmer contouring of the headlights brings a modern twist to the focused look so familiar from BMWs past and present. The standard

full LED headlights include two U-shaped daytime driving lights to create a precise and modern light graphic. The M Sport package features new 19” and 20” Wheels while the new limited M Sport Edition comes with exclusive Individual metallic paint and unique 20” Air Performance wheels. The new 5 comes in a choice of three trim levels: SE, M Sport and M Sport Edition. For the very first time in the UK, we’ll also be introducing a range-topping M Performance M550i xDrive on Saloon models. Standard features of the SE include a choice of 17”, 18” and 19” alloy wheels and Steptronic or Steptronic Sport transmission depending on the engine variant. The interior benefits from Dakota leather upholstery, Oxide Silver dark matt trim, Sport leather steering wheel and heated front seats. ENGINES From November 2020, the latestgeneration BMW eDrive technology will be combined with a four-cylinder petrol engine on the new BMW 530e Saloon and – for the very first time – the BMW 530e Touring. Mild-hybrid technology, first introduced in the BMW 520d and BMW 520d xDrive models in autumn 2019, will now offer enhanced performance combined with lower fuel consumption and improved driving comfort in all four- and six-cylinder variants of the new BMW 5 Series. Fitting a powerful 48V starter-generator and a second battery enables a significant increase in the amount of brake energy that can be regenerated and stored. This energy is used not just to supply the electrical system, but also to lighten the combustion engine’s workload and boost its power. The starter-generator produces an electric boost that instantly makes an additional 8 kW/11 hp available,

enhancing overtaking and off-the-line acceleration. The starter-generator also increases efficiency by assisting the engine when driving at constant speeds and improves comfort when the Auto Start-Stop and coasting options are used. Alongside the 530hp V8 found in the range-topping BMW M550i xDrive Saloon, the new BMW 5 Series comes with a choice of three additional petrol and three diesel engines producing between 184hp and 340hp. The direct injection system in the petrol units operates at increased pressure, meaning greater efficiency, while the two-stage turbocharging technology now fitted in all diesel variants makes for even sharper power delivery. XCeed line-up adds PHEV option Hot on the heels of the electrified versions of the Niro, Soul and Sportage, Kia is expanding its line-up even further with the launch of a Plug-in Hybrid version of the Kia XCeed. It comes powered by a 1.6-litre GDi engine with an electric motor and 8.9kWh battery pack to produce 139bhp and 265Nm of torque. It offers a compelling alternative to conventional petrol and diesel models. The new powertrain combines a lithium-polymer battery pack, an electric motor, and an efficient 1.6-litre GDi (Gasoline Direct injection) engine. The powertrain’s total power and torque output are 139bhp and 265Nm. The Kia XCeed Plug-in Hybrid is a rarity in the compact family car class, offering the virtues of a stylish, well-equipped crossover vehicle, combined with the efficiency and low emissions of a plug-in hybrid vehicle. No matter which version of the Kia XCeed Plug-in Hybrid is chosen – ‘3’ or ‘First Edition’ – the equipment list is generous. The ‘First Edition’ grade sits at the top-of-the Kia XCeed Plug-in Hybrid range and features a Smart Park Assist System (SPAS) that integrates front and rear parking sensors with the ability to automatically park in parallel or perpendicular spaces. There are black leather seat upholstery, heated outer rear seats and a driver’s seat with memory function, meanwhile, the rear seats fold down,

Kona cracks conundrum by delivering affordable EV range Hyundai has delivered just what the fleet sector ordered, says Andrew Walker The first EV I got to drive was the Nissan Leaf, back in 2012. The range was a claimed 100 miles, although in the real world this was more likely to be around 65-70 miles and you really needed to drive conservatively, especially on the motorway, to achieve even that. The Mk2 Leaf improved this, with a range of 125 miles, but about 100 miles being achievable. While not perfect, what the Leaf proved was that the market for EVs was definitely there; customers really wanted an affordable family car, preferably one that looked like an SUV, with a decent EV range of between 200 and 300 miles. Step forward, then, the Hyundai Kona EV, which was launched in late 2018 and was the first fully-electric sub-compact SUV in Europe. With a more realistic price point of £34,695 – before the Government grant of £3,000 – for the entry level SE, with a 39kW battery, the Kona EV was the first affordable electric car that offered a 200-mile range. As fleet customers are more likely to want a greater range than 200 miles, Hyundai loaned us the range-topping Premium model, fitted with the larger capacity 64kW battery. This offers a claimed range of nearly 250+ miles and retails at £38,900, again, before the government grant of £3,000. At first glance the Kona EV looks just as attractive from the outside as the petrol Kona. It shares all the same overall design cues, apart from the lack of a front grille on the electric www.companycarandvan.co.uk

version, where the charging plug is located. Inside, too, the EV mirrors the petrol Kona with a functional, well laid-out dashboard and on-trend connectivity and tech. There’s a reach-and-rake steering wheel and the electrically adjustable seats mean that there’s no reason you can’t get comfortable in this car. The dashboard fixtures and fittings are pleasantly finished, in a mix of hard and soft touch plastics, in a colour combination of silver and grey. The seats and steering wheel, are finished in light grey leather.The quality is good, as you’d expect from a Korean car, with the infotainment screen, steering wheel controls and general layout familiar to anyone who’s driven other Hyundai or KIA models before. There are some notable differences in the cabin, between the EV and petrol models. There’s no traditional gear selector, just four buttons located between the front seats, offering a choice of Drive, Reverse, Park or Neutral. There’s also three drive modes: Eco, Comfort and Sport, which can be selected using a switch just behind the electric parking brake. The Kona EV also comes with clever steering-wheel mounted paddles to increase or decrease the braking regeneration. This gives

you a choice of four regenerative levels: 0, 1, 2 or 3. As we discovered, the lower settings work best on the motorway or open roads, the higher ones best in urban areas or in slowmoving traffic. As far as practicality in the cabin goes, the Kona EV offers a decent-sized glove box, an armrest box in the centre binnacle, a small push-shut cubby in front of the gear buttons, which hides the aux-in, USB and phone charger, as well as two smallish door pockets, big enough for one bottle of water each. In the rear the door pockets are slim, as are the storage nets on the rear of the front seats, so not a lot of useful storage is actually offered in the back. The Premium model comes very well kitted out with a long list of goodies, including the battery-reducing heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. There’s also an Auto Hold function for the automatic hand brake. The heating controls can be adjusted to just warm or cool the driver’s side of the car which is energy saving and a nice touch. In common with all EV cars, when it’s cold outside, your EV warms up a lot faster than a petrol or diesel car. The inside of the driver’s door features buttons that control the electrically folding wing mirrors, four electric windows, window lock and the car lock/unlock button. On the right of the dashboard are a row of switches that include Lane Departure Warning, which we always turn off, and something called VESS, which I discovered stands for Virtual Engine Sound System. Continued from page 17 There’s a 332-litre boot on offer which is split three ways. The larger load space, which sits close to the boot lip, hides a lift-up floor, underneath which you’ll find a tray to store valuables. This too lifts up and underneath you’ll find the domestic 3 Pin charging cable and other essential car tools. Out and about, the Kona EV is naturally quiet – hence the need for the VESS system – and there’s instant torque available from the get-go. It feels rapid; the 0-62mph time is actually 7.6 seconds and on exiting a junction that torque can lead to a bit of wheel spin on wet tarmac. At faster speeds, the outside road noise from the low-rolling-resistance tyres on 17” alloys does enter the cabin, but it’s never overwhelming. In town, the Kona EV is pleasure to drive. Quiet, nippy and small enough to park up on the side of the road. I really liked the simple button gear change selecter. To conserve energy, we selected the Eco Drive mode for our week in the Kona. Despite its weight of 1685kg, after all, it is fitted with a 204ps (150kW) electric motor and a 64kWh lithium-ion battery – the Kona EV is comfortable to be in and offers okay driving dynamics. Certainly it’s no worse than many other cars out there. There is, thanks to the battery, reasonable body roll and you’ll also notice that the energy recuperation when braking makes smooth stops tricky. Motorway cruising is best done at no more than 70mph to retain battery range, but if required the Kona EV will happily push on from this. I stopped off at Chester Services to check out the EV charging options there. The Kona EV has a CCS Combo port for 50kW public rapid charging, allowing it to charge up to 80 per cent in 75 minutes. say, does offer rapid charging. Charging at home on my Rolec 7kw home charger with the 7 pin Type 2 connector, from a range of 21 miles to a full range of 251, took 6.5 hours. If you don’t have a home EV charger, things are not so rosy. Using the supplied cable with a three-pin plug with a standard domestic electricity supply, it would take around 30 hours to charge to 95%. Real world cost and range are probably the two things most potential EV customers want to know and, of course, to confuse matters, it’s not an exact science. Looking at our week in the Kona EV, we drove 246 miles. With the average kW costing 12.5p from UK electricity suppliers, if you multiply the size of our Kona’s battery which was 64kW, by 12.5p, this gives you a figure of 800 – or 800p / £8. So the cost to charge the Kona EV fitted with a 64kW battery from zero to full, on a 7kW home charger, where electricity costs tend to be cheaper than at service stations, is about £8, which I think is excellent. Using a public charger, such as the ones on offer at Chester Services, will, surprise, surprise, cost you more than 12.5p kW. EV users can sign up to discount schemes which allow the use of public EV chargers at a reduced cost, however, so this is well worth considering if you buy or lease an EV. A cost of £8 to get a range of 246 miles in the Kona EV and actually getting 202 miles on the single charge still compares favourably with what it would cost to go the same distance in the 1.0 petrol Kona we tested last year, in which we averaged 42mpg. Petrol prices are, as we all know, historically low at the moment, and fuel is costing little more than £1 a litre for petrol. Even so, the cost of going 202 miles in the petrol Kona would be close to £22, which is £14 more. If you’re more careful than I was

and drive on the motorway at a constant 70mph and utilise the regeneration on offer, I do believe that 246 miles on a full charge would be possible. Indeed, other motoring writers have got the range in the Kona EV close to 300 miles which, when you look at the cost of one, is frankly brilliant! And we all know that once Covid-19 recedes into our rear-view mirrors, that petrol price will be back at £1.30 and the saving will be closer to £30 over that same distance. All sounds reasonable enough, doesn’t it? But here’s the Kona Electric’s trump card: pricing. Factor in the UK grant for plug-in vehicles and the 39kW model in Premium trim will cost you £31,000. Compare this to the similarly priced Nissan Leaf and VW E-Golf , both with almost half of the Kona’s 200-mile range, and it should be clear just how good the Kona Electric is. I hope this review leaves you, the SME fleet manager or end user, more confident in considering an EV as your next company car. The Kona EV is well ahead of the pack. It’s well priced, very cheap to run and offers a battery range of 200 miles, on the 39kW version. To make the most of your EV, you really need a home 7.5kW EV socket and if there’s an EV charger at work too, that’s a bonus.

Verdict Beats the offers from rivals manufacturers comfortably. Only the KIA e-Niro currently matches the Kona for range. CC&V RATING: N N N N N

UX 250h opens the door to Lexus’ premium quality engine with two electric motor/generators in a new generation hybrid transaxle that is more compact, lighter and has less internal friction than previous Lexus hybrid systems. The Power Control Unit (PCU) is more powerful yet is 20 per cent smaller and 10 per cent lighter. Optimising the level of electric motor assistance and engine rpm produces a linear acceleration feel without the engine running at high revs. Engine speed is synchronised with vehicle speed to create an immediate and continuous acceleration feel. The speed at which the hybrid system can shut off the petrol engine, such as when driving on long downward slopes, has been raised to 71mph. The new, compact and lightweight nickelmetal hydride (NiMH) battery and compact cooling system are located below the rear seat, which helps give the vehicle its low centre of gravity. The UX 250h is available with either front-wheel drive or E-Four electric all-wheel drive. The E-Four all-wheel drive system uses a separate, dedicated high-torque electric motor integrated into the rear differential. Power distribution between the front and rear axles is automatically optimised by the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system when accelerating, cornering, or driving on slippery surfaces. E-Four provides stable driving on uphill slopes or snow-covered roads with lower fuel consumption than a conventional all-wheel drive system with a power split device and

driveshaft. E-Four does more than assist traction in slippery conditions: it can also actively improve stability by adjusting rear-wheel power to help correct over or understeer. The UX 250h is very responsive to drive and, like all Lexus hybrids, it offers better fuel efficiency and lower emissions than other petrol or diesel vehicles in its class. It also requires no plugging in for recharging and has no issues where driving range is concerned. In realworld city driving it can use electric power for a significant proportion of every journey – up to 55 per cent, depending on the driving conditions. When cruising or accelerating gently, the front electric motor (and rear motor on all-wheel drive models) can propel the car with electricity supplied by the hybrid battery. In this situation, the vehicle runs almost silently, uses no petrol and produces zero emissions. Under full acceleration, power from the electric motor(s) instantaneously supplements the performance of the 2.0-litre petrol engine. Together they deliver a potent surge of torque, providing linear acceleration precisely when it’s needed. Under braking, or when the driver takes their foot off the accelerator, regenerative braking harnesses kinetic energy to produce electricity. This, together with electric power produced during normal driving conditions, is stored in the hybrid battery. This means the UX 250h never has to be plugged in to a power source for recharging.

Skoda offers a superb way to dodge a tax bullet Andrew Walker Plug-in hybrids offer customers a half-way house before opting for full electric, and the latest brand to join the gang is Skoda, with the Superb iV. The iV sits alongside conventional petrol and diesel models in the Superb range and offers most appeal to company car drivers, with a 12% BIK from April 2020. Add in its 148.7mpg fuel economy coupled with emissions of 38g/ km and anyone looking for a large family saloon or estate should really take note. By way of comparison, the 2.0-litre 190hp diesel Superb, which offers similar performance to the iV, comes with a 2020/21 BIK of 32%, making the savings on an iV a no brainer. The iV features a 1.4-litre petrol four-cylinder turbo engine paired to a 113bhp electric motor and 13kWh battery. The charging port is neatly hidden under the grille at the front of the car. And, as with all PHEVs, to make the most of its range, you’ll need to plug-in regularly to make the most of what it has to offer.

We were testing the Superb SE L 1.4TSI 218PS fitted with the six-speed DSG gearbox. It’s well equipped, with 18” Zenith alloys, full matrix LED headlights with AFS and LED daytime running lights, Adaptive Cruise Control, Bluetooth, Amundsen SatNav with 8” colour touchscreen and integrated WiFi, wireless SmartLink for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto plus front and rear USBs. As part of the Volkswagen family, the interior will be familiar both to owners of Skodas as well as those who used to drive a Volkswagen, SEAT or Audi. It’s very logically laid out and has great build quality, peppered with some nice upmarket gadgets such as the touchscreen which operates the SatNav, DAB, SmartLink and Bluetooth functions. The leather steering wheel also includes buttons to control the media and Bluetooth functions as well as allowing the driver to access driving statistics and the SatNav. The lower left-hand stalk controls the cruise control and with my model fitted with adaptive cruise control, this also

allowed me to select a safe distance from my vehicle to the car in front – perfect for the motorway. The Superb offers class-leading interior space, especially in the rear, plus 510 litres in the boot. That’s 150 litres less than in the standard Superb estate, as the underfloor boot storage is now occupied by a charging cable cubby and in front of that, the battery. My test-drive coincided with a trip to Newcastle to bring home my son – and all his kit – from his university halls. The full 1,800 litres came in handy as we fitted everything in comfortably, while the 330-mile motorway journey allowed me to check out the Superb as a motorway companion. It didn’t disappoint. From start, the Superb defaults to E-mode and for my shortish drive to the motorway I utilised the battery. Once up and running, though, I switched to Hybrid mode, set cruise control and set off for the North East. You can also select Sport mode which results in a firmer drive and a little bit more overtaking power.

coming in at £36,035. The 187bhp 2.0 TSI DSG petrol SE L costs £32,305 which is £4,000 less, but as we have already alluded to, the new company car tax rules make the iV the cheapest model to run. As with any PHEV, to make one work successfully you will need to plug-in regularly to utilise the electric range. On our petrol-only motorway trip to Newcastle, we averaged 40.3 mpg, about right for a large, fully laden, petrol estate. Around town and using E-mode for shorter travel, that figure climbed to 51.9mpg, which is comparable with what you’d expect from a diesel Superb. After heaping praise on the Superb iV, are there any negatives? On the motorway, if you need to slow down and then get back up to speed, then the 1.4 engine shows its limitations. The interior, though solidly built and nicely laid out, is a bit generic in that VAG way. That is basically it, though.

You’ll notice that the power dial on the digital display flashes around into the tachometer section, which is the only clue that you’re in a hybrid. On the motorway, the seemingly too small 1.4 TSI petrol engine does an excellent job, as long as you don’t have to slow down, wherein a combination of lack of diesel torque means the iV takes a while to get going again. This is not a problem in town where the battery and petrol engine work in harmony. Using our 7kW Rolec home charger meant

that charging the battery to full took us around 90 minutes. This will give you around 20 mile of pure electric driving, enough for a couple of days worth of short, local trips, which are undertaken in near silence. When the battery runs out the petrol engine steps seamlessly in. The iV is heavier than the traditional combustion Superbs and if you try hard enough you may notice that the car’s handling is slightly hampered by the extra weight. Baby boom Range Rover pulls the wraps off its exciting new Evoque PHEV The new Range Rover Evoque SUVs is now available with plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) technology, delivering performance, refinement and capability customers expect together with an electric-only range of up 41 miles and CO2 emissions as low as 32g/km. Badged as the P300e, this new Evoque is based on Land Rover’s state-of-the-art Premium Transverse architecture, which was designed to support electrification while maintaining Land Rover’s signature off-road capability. The new plug-in hybrid P300e models join the existing 48-volt mild-hybrid SUVs, bringing new levels of efficiency to the premium compact SUV sector. The new model offers sustainable performance by combining a 200hp (147kW) 1.5-litre three-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine with a 109hp (80kW) electric motor integrated into the rear axle and powered by a 15kWh lithium-ion battery located below the rear seats. Performance and capability are uncompromised, with acceleration of 0-60mph in just 6.1 seconds (0-100km/h in 6.4 seconds). Efficiency is remarkable: the Range Rover Evoque P300e emits from just 32g/km of CO2 (WLTP) and has an all-electric, zero tailpipe emission range of up to 41 miles, with fuel economy of up to 201.8mpg (1.4L/100km). The foundation stone of the new compact SUV is Land Rover’s Premium Transverse Architecture, which was designed from the outset to accommodate plug-in and mild-hybrid technologies. The hardware is cleverly packaged beneath the cabin floor without compromising interior space. The Electric Rear Axle Drive (ERAD) is powered by a compact 15kWh lithium-ion battery located below the rear seats. The battery is made up of 84 prismatic cells, arranged in seven 50Ah modules of 12, with a 6mm-thick steel undertray that protects the battery without compromising the vehicles’ hallmark all-terrain capability. The advanced Electric Rear Axle Drive (ERAD) features a light, compact and efficient synchronous permanent magnet motor. To optimise package space, the driveshafts are concentric with the motor and single-speed transmission, while the inverter is also integrated within the ERAD casing. At speeds above 84mph (135km/h), the electric motor is decoupled to reduce drag and therefore optimise efficiency, and then seamlessly re-engages when the speed falls below this. The compact high-voltage junction box (HVJB) under the front seats is another engineering innovation. This comprises the DC: DC converter (changes high-voltage current from the hybrid battery to low voltage to support the 12-volt network) and the 7kW on-board charger used to charge the hybrid battery when the vehicle is plugged in. Intelligently locating the PHEV system throughout the structure improves dynamics, lowering the centre of gravity by six per cent and further optimising front-rear weight distribution. The new PHEV models are available with a Mode 2 Home Charging Cable, enabling customers to fully charge the vehicle from a plug socket in 6hrs 42mins, which is perfect

for overnight charging. For faster charging, the Mode 3 Charging Cable enables customers to plug-in to a 7kW AC domestic wall box or AC public charge points: this enables charging from 0-80 per cent in just 1hr 24mins. The quickest charge times are achieved using the growing public charging network of DC charge points: at 32KW DC, 0-80 per cent takes just 30 minutes. The charge port flap is located on the rear fender – on the opposite side of the vehicle to the fuel filler flap. Customers can stay connected to the Evoque and Discovery Sport PHEV via Land Rover’s intelligent InControl Remote smartphone application. Vive la difference! DS has tapped into its ‘je ne sais quoi’ heritage to produce a DS7 PHEV that stands out from the other hybrids out there, says Andrew Walker The DS7 Crossback was launched in 2019 and CC&V had the opportunity to drive the petrol and diesel versions, both of which impressed. However, every new model released by the French brand from 2025 onwards will either be fully electric, or a plug-in hybrid with at least a 30-mile EV range. The first of these to be launched are the smaller DS3 Crossback, the brand’s first EV, and the larger DS7 Crossback, which is the brand’s first PHEV and shares its hybrid petrol set-up with the Vauxhall Grandland X PHEV. Like the Vauxhall, the DS7 E-Tense combines a 1598cc petrol engine with an electric drive system of two electric motors. They offer a combined output of 109hp, are AWD and have a 13.2kWh lithium-ion battery. The front electric motor is coupled to an electrified eight-speed automatic transmission, while the second motor and differential are integrated into the electrically-powered rear axle, providing all-wheel traction on demand. It’s quick, too, going from 0-60 mph in just 5.9 seconds, thanks to the 200hp on offer and the 300Nm that arrives at 3000rpm. The petrol engine with two electric motors offer a whopping 296bhp and 450Nm of torque. The E-Tense range is offered in three trim levels. First up is the Performance Line, which features 19” alloys, a 12.3” HD touchscreen, Mirror Screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED Front fogs with cornering function, Manual ‘Follow me home’ lighting, LED Daytime Running Lights, DS Active LED Vision, DS 3D LED rear lights, High beam assist and full LED interior lighting. 28 | July 2020 | Company Car & Van

Prestige adds full leather seats, electric rear seat backrests, keyless entry, a reversing camera, wireless charging and front parking sensors, while Ultra Prestige adds 20” alloys, a panoramic sunroof, a Focal sound system, a remote tailgate and DS Connected Pilot. From the outside, the E-Tense features some subtle differences to the petrol and diesel versions. There’s a ‘Pearl Crystal’ paint finish that’s optional and exclusive E-Tense badging,

plus a charging port flap located on the opposite side to the usual fuel cap. The DS7 PHEV offers four driving modes; Electric, Hybrid, AWD and Sport. In pure electric mode, the car has a range of 35 miles WLTP. Electric Mode can be selected up to speeds of 83mph, although is best for city traffic. In Hybrid mode, the car automatically selects the most efficient method of propulsion. AWD is for that wet grass you’ve parked on and Sport gives everything extra fizz. To aid battery range, DS 7 CROSSBACK E-TENSE 4×4 is regenerated whenever the driver decelerates or uses the brakes to extend the range. Another function, ‘E-SAVE’, also allows the driver to save enough energy to drive in all-electric mode for the last 6 or 12 miles of a journey. All DS E-TENSE vehicles are supplied with two electric cables for 7kW AC and 3-pin 13amp DC. On a typical home 7kWh charger its will take 90 minutes to filly charge there battery. Furthermore, all DS customers buying a new PHEV receive six months’ free subscription to Polar Plus – the UK’s largest public charging network. CC&V was given the opportunity to spend some time in a Prestige model and mighty nice it is. Triangle-shaped air vents at each end of the dashboard are noticeably different, as is the location of the starter button, smack bang in the top centre of the dash, flanked by the two central air vents. The landscape touchscreen is also a highlight and the angular electric window switches set in the centre binnacle also add to ‘le difference’. Group’s 12.3” digital instrument cluster in front of the driver can be configured with rhombusshaped graphics. Elsewhere, the dashboard switches, door fittings, seats and steering wheel are satisfyingly all top notch, with only the lightweight plastic used on the glove box, letting things down a touch. Because of the battery design, you get the same amount of storage as in the combustionengined DS7s; 555 litres of boot space until you fold the rear seats down, when this goes up to a quite considerable 1752 litres. The on-board tech is straightforward and I connected our mobile phone to the car’s Bluetooth Hands-Free telephone and linked it to Apple-Car-Play quickly. Our only negative was that like many other models, the DS7 features climate controls located in the touchscreen, which can be a little frustrating. In Electric Mode, the E-Tense is much quieter than the diesel DS7. The steering is light and precise and as a motorway cruiser, it’s very impressive. The DS’s suspension makes for a comfortable ride and there is little or no body roll, even around sharp bends. We mainly utilised the Hybrid driving mode, which selects the driving mode for you. In pure Electric Mode we managed to travel 27 miles before the car switched to Hybrid. Drivers may notice the extra battery weight, but it’s not that intrusive to the handling of the car.

For fleet customers the CO2 emissions are under 50g/km, which means attractive BIK. More good news is that DS claims a maximum fuel consumption of 128 mpg. As we’ve said before, the only way you’ll see any kind of fuel economy return close to 100 mpg is if you drive in Electric Mode as much as possible, plug-in after every short journey and utilise the clever on-board charge saving that’s offered. We’d guess that if you don’t do these things regularly – and let’s face it, many PHEV customers don’t – then 32-36 mpg is a more likely scenario.

Verdict As with all DS models it’s refreshingly different. We would suggest you consider the 2WD CROSSBACK E-TENSE 225 model, which has a lower entry price than its 4WD sibling.

Vauxhall has future-proofed long-range cruiser with best in class CO2 and fuel economy

Vauxhall’s new Insignia is on sale now, with prices starting from £23,120 on-the-road. With best in class CO2s and fuel economy, the Insignia is refreshed for model year 2021 with an all-new range of fuel-efficient powertrains, revised technology and a bold and attractive exterior design. Insignia now consumes up to 18 per cent less fuel than the outgoing model thanks to powerful new high-efficiency engines. A new top-of-the-range GSi model also joins the range. Engine options are three- and four-cylinder units, including a 1.5-litre (122PS) diesel unit that achieves CO2 emissions of 120g/km WLTP. The three-cylinder engines are up to 50kg lighter than their four-cylinder predecessors in the outgoing model. Above these are two 2.0-litre petrol engines with 200PS and 230PS, as well as a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel, which will be introduced later this year. Crucially for high mileage fleet drivers, all Insignia diesel units are fully RDE2 compliant, meaning no four per cent BiK surcharge. The 2.0-litre petrol engines are also the first Vauxhall engines with cylinder deactivation. Unless the driver needs a lot of power, the variable camshaft control deactivates two cylinders, significantly reducing fuel consumption. The new Insignia is available to order in SE Nav, SRi Nav, SRi VX-Line Nav, Ultimate Nav and GSi trim levels. Innovative tech features are not limited to the running features or infotainment unit as ergonomically certified AGR seats are available as an option for the driver and passenger, while compatible smartphones can be charged wirelessly. Each trim level features a high level of standard spec providing excellent value. Among standard kit on SE NAV is a Multimedia Navi infotainment system, with fully integrated sat nav system and a 7-inch colour touchscreen. This is backed by AM/FM/DAB digital radio, Bluetooth audio streaming, a Bluetooth mobile phone portal and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. To hear this lot, there seven speakers (five front, two rear). Other comfort features include AGRapproved front seats, dual zone electronic climate control, leather-covered steering wheel, a front centre armrest, and a steering wheel audio/phone/cruise control. ON TEST: NISSAN e-NV200

e-NV200 is an urban crowd pleaser to beat diesel power Revised e-NV200 still has plenty to offer and is a quiet, refined place that could put you off diesel for life, says Andrew Walker The Nissan e-NV200 is the longest standing of the current crop of electric vans, having been launched back in 2013. It was updated in 2018 using the running gear from the Nissan Leaf and adding a 40kWh battery, which increased range by over 50% to 124 miles on the combined cycle. That’s a distance that many new electric vans may struggle to beat. Offered in Visia, Acenta and Tekna trim, in theory there’s an e-NV200 for all buyers. Basic Visia includes Bluetooth, electric windows, a USB connection and steel wheels. Accenta adds rapid charging as standard, a reversing camera, automatic air-conditioning, battery 32 | July 2020 | Company Car & Van

heating/cooling to help the van maintain its charge and cruise control with speed limiter. We were testing an e-NV200 in Tekna + trim, which comes with SatNav, 15” alloys, automatic lights and wipers, plus our test van was fitted with the £252 Cold Pack, which adds heated front seats a heated steering wheel and heated door mirrors. It comes supplied with two charging cables, a three-pin 10-amp cable and a seven-pin 32-amp cable. Using the seven-pin cable and a Rolec wall charger takes you from zero charge to full in about seven hours. The Acenta and Tekna versions come with a CHAdeMO socket that allows rapid charging from public charge points. This can add 80% charge to the battery in as little as 40 minutes, conditions permitting. There’s only two front seats, and only the driver’s seat can be moved back and forth as well as reclined, but it is a comfortable cabin, nonetheless. If you need more cabin space the passenger seat can be folded down to create a tray table. There’s also a full steel bulkhead, two sliding doors, near side and off side and

unglazed French rear doors. The cabin itself is rather bland, finished in grey and blacks, and the quality is decidedly average, but it all works well and all of the switchgear is easy to use. For storage, you get a small glove box, two slim door pockets, a large flat area between the seats, twin dash mounted cup holders, a small dash top area and a lift up and over central box. The Tekna is fitted with a really nice infotainment touchscreen, so accessing the DAB radio, SatNav, Bluetooth telephone and CD player is easy, but there’s no connected Apps for Apple Car Play or Android Auto. Safety featured includes ABS with EBD, an alarm, electronic traction control, curtain, driver, passenger AND side airbags, remote central locking and a tyre pressure monitor. Press the starter button, engage D and you are ready to move off in total silence. It’s nippy, reaching 62mph in just 8.7 seconds but top speed is only 77 mph. It is easy to drive and simple to manoveure, but it’s hardly thrilling. It makes sense to utilise the Eco button, which www.companycarandvan.co.uk

adds some regenerative braking Nissan Leaf-style to the drive. This allows you to let the van slow itself down without the driver having to use the brakes and it’s easy to get used to. Disengage Eco and the Nissan is far more sprightly but you quickly drain the battery and the range decreases faster. It is better to use Eco all the time. The Tekna is fitted with large side mirrors and a wide angle reversing camera, so going backwards is a cinch. The e-NV200 has a cargo volume of 4.2 cubic metres and there’s a payload of 705kg, putting it ahead of sister model the Renault Kangoo. The rear compartment is not large enough to stand up in at 1.36 metres, but it’s a useful rectangular shape. The battery is located underneath the load area so load volume does not suffer, so the Nissan has space for two Euro Pallets in the back, with 1.22 metres of space between the rear wheel arches. The rear sill is 524mm off the ground and there are six D-ring lashing eyes set into the load area floor. Payload is 705kg, almost 100kg more than the Renault Kangoo. While an electric van with range of 124 miles will work for some, it won’t work for all. Having a home charger makes all the difference. We were able to charge the Nissan to full, with the range showing 123 miles. We then drove it for just over 100 miles including two 40-mile motorway trips using the cruise control at

70mph, before we felt the need to charge again. We reckon that if you avoid the motorway, you can easily achieve a 124-mile range or even more, but only if you stick to under 50mph or under this in urban areas. Even short, motorway, trips at a constant 70mph, will reduce the battery range much more quickly. We found the Nissan’s cabin a comfortable place to be, with little wind and road noise entering the cabin, even on the motorway and in the wet. In slow-moving traffic you can hear a pin drop and enjoy quiet, hands-free, telephone conversations. Compared to a diesel van it’s bliss to be in, and the auto gearbox also takes the strain out of urban driving. All in all, we found the e-NV200 to be a quiet, relaxing, comfortable work place. In conclusion, whether your business would benefit from running an e-NV200 really depends on your daily journey. For someone like a florist, or for the Post Office, or anyone who performs a series of short, local journeys, owning the Nissan would be a no brainer. A government grant of 20% up to a maximum of £8,000 can be applied to e-NV200 sales to sweeten the deal. This would make the Tekna + version we drove cost from £26,839; that’s a reasonable investment. On the downside, the Nissan is a little bland inside and with everyone else in the process of launching an electric van, this could put some off.

In our week in the eNV200, we managed to achieve a 100-mile range, but it was driven unladen. We would add a caveat that any electric van once fully laden, will not achieve such a good return. On a closing note, Nissan covers the battery for eight years and 100,000 miles. In this period, if the battery capacity dips below nine bars (out of 12) when recharging, Nissan will replace it free of charge. In addition, the e-NV200 is covered by a five-year/60,000-mile guarantee for its mechanical and electrical components. There’s also a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty. Nissan, we feel, can be relied on when it comes to battery technology and the purchase or lease of an e-NV200 can be undertaken without any worries.

Verdict Increased range is a real bonus. The cabin is functional, rather than exciting. Nissan’s EV experience will reassure anyone moving to electric vans for the first time.

MAXUS eyes SME fleets with groundbreaking DELIVERs Andrew Walker caught up with Mark Barrett, General Manager of Harris Automotive Distributors UC, which distributes the MAXUS range in the UK and Ireland, to find out how the name change from LDV had gone down and how big a dent Covid-19 had put in their plans CC&V: Since we last spoke LDV has become MAXUS, while the media has been dominated by the Covid-19 global pandemic which has obviously had a major effect on van sales. Is the brand now ready to move on from this? Mark Barrett: Like so many other industries around the world, the recent restrictions and impact of Covid-19 have been a challenge for the automotive industry. However, at MAXUS we never took our foot off the pedal despite the pandemic and in early April, we started our rebrand process, which would see the LDV moniker align with LHD Europe, China and other markets to become MAXUS. We had planned to officially introduce the commercial vehicle market to the new MAXUS branding at the 2020 CV Show, and we had exciting, large-scale plans for the launch of our first MAXUS new platform vehicles, the e

DELIVER 3 and DELIVER 9. As we know, the CV Show was cancelled, but that didn’t stop us repurposing our plans with a little bit of lateral thinking. On June 15 we launched our vehicles through a virtual online experience, allowing past, present and future customers to get up close and personal with the DELIVER 9 and e DELIVER 3 vans – remotely. The virtual launch was hugely successful and in fact, we were probably able to reach more people through our virtual launch than we ever could have through a physical launch event. Both the DELIVER 9 and e DELIVER 3 are now available to order through local dealership networks and with restrictions broadly lifted, we believe we are in a strong position to build on our plans and the sales that we have already started to generate and push the MAXUS brand to new heights.

Along with the rest of the fleet media we sadly missed the opportunity to see your new vans at this year’s CV Show, especially the electric e DELIVER 3. Can you tell us more about this vehicle? MB: We had given the market a sneak preview of the e DELIVER 3 at CV Show in 2019 when we showcased a left-hand drive, pre-production model, which was called the EV30 at that time. The newly launched e DELIVER 3 is an all-new platform model that features enhanced spec. It is billed as the little brother to its predecessor, the LDV EV80, but it is the first vehicle by MAXUS that is only available as a fully electric model with no other power train options. The MAXUS e DELIVER 3 is available in three variants with two wheelbase options: a short wheelbase panel van (4555 L x1780 W x1895 H), a long wheelbase panel van (5145mm L x1780mm W x1900mm H) and a long wheelbase platform chassis (5037mm L x1780mm W). It also features a High-Power Low Energy Motor with an acceleration time of 0-60 miles in 11 seconds. There are two battery options to choose from, a 35kWh and 52.5kWH, plus DC + AC dual charging modes. With the DC mode, the van will be 80 per cent electrically charged in 45 minutes. SAIC has a number of well-known brands within its portfolio including, since 2010, the acclaimed MAXUS (formerly LDV) range of LCVs. SAIC has invested more than £2 billion in this brand, with a strong focus on safety, innovation and the introduction of new products to the range, including a suite of EVs that are already setting the standard for the future of eco-fuelled commercial motoring.

Isuzu is looking to live up to its ‘pick-up professionals’ tagline by offering tipper conversions on its award-winning D-Max pick-up. Based on the Utility Extended Cab, the conversion is a cost-effective solution for customers who require a tough and reliable tipper, with great off-road capabilities. The tipper conversion combines all the essential workhorse attributes of the D-Max Utility with the practicality of a durable and lightweight tipper body. As it is based on the extended cab, the load bed is very accommodating measuring 1,977mm long by 1,800mm wide. The rugged ‘Tippadeck’ bed is constructed using 18mm thick interlocking alloy floor panels and loads are kept secure thanks to 300mm high sideboards and tailboard, also made from lightweight alloy, and heavy-duty underfloor tie points. The tailboard, which opens to 180°, features a two-way hinge assembly – meaning it can be opened from both the top and bottom – and rubber buffer stops to protect the body. Meanwhile, the spring latches on the sideboards are recessed to avoid catching on objects and the corner posts are removable to provide an open platform – perfect for loading and unloading. A wander lead control is used to activate the electro-hydraulic power pack that lifts the body. The tipping gear and subframe have been fully galvanised to protect them from the elements and, once raised, there’s an integral body prop and hose burst safety valve to stop the body from falling unexpectedly. For safety reasons, a dual-tone alarm is activated when the body is raised or lowered, and rubber moulded body rests have been added to prevent the tipper body clattering the frame while driving and distracting the driver. A powder-coated tubular gantry infilled with a protection panel has been fitted to shield the cab. Other features include a heated rear screen as standard, hard-wearing black front bumper, black door handles, heated black door mirrors and 16” steel wheels, which can be equipped with BF Goodrich All-Terrain tyres as a cost option if extra grip is required when going off-road. The interior’s specification includes two 12-volt sockets, remote control central locking, an easy-cleanable vinyl floor covering and under seat base storage, plus, creature comforts like manual air-conditioning, power windows and an RDS radio with Bluetooth connectivity and USB port. www.companycarandvan.co.uk

Leeds Council goes green as Kangoos added to fleet Leeds City Council has delivered a massive boost to its goal of carbon-less future by taking delivery of 122 Renault Kangoo Z.E.33 All-electric LCVs. The compact vans will be used for the delivery of council services and will play a major role in a new EV Trials Scheme through which West Yorkshire businesses can experience the Kangoo Z.E.33 for free via the Council’s EV initiative. This single order makes a significant contribution to Leeds City Council’s goal to be a carbon-neutral authority by 2030. The award-winning Kangoo Z.E.33 was chosen for its value, space and range of up to 143 miles (WLTP). 102 of the vans will be used by the council’s

property maintenance and civil enforcement teams, with the remainder to be made available to local businesses through its new EV Trials Scheme. Under this scheme local businesses and organisations are able to enjoy a completely free trial of one of the Kangoos for up to two months, to ensure electric vehicles are suitable for their operations. Each van will be equipped with telematics devices, which gather journey and charging data, with users receiving a tailored report highlighting the findings and the environmental and potential financial benefits that transitioning to an electric vehicle can generate for their business or organisation. The Renault Kangoo Z.E. will make up nearly half of the 50 electric vans and cars that are available to trial.

Everyone’s crazy about VW’s sharp new van A spot of retro-chic livery and great driver appeal help make Volkswagen’s Transporter 6.1 stand out from the crowd, says Andrew Walker Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has given its Transporter van a major facelift for 2020, with the new Transporter ‘6.1’ featuring a sharper exterior, a car-like cabin, improvements to connectivity and better passenger safety. The model range is down to just three models: Startline, Highline and Sportline. The Startline and Highline models are both available in T28, T30 and T32 versions, in both SWB or LWB. There’s also an entry level SWB only T26 Startline. All are powered by a 2.0-litre TDI engine, badged 90, 100 or 150 PS. If you choose a Highline version, there’s also the option of a 2.0-litre 199 PS TDI, version with a standard seven-speed DSG gearbox. And, if 40 | July 2020 | Company Car & Van

you live or work in a remote region, 4MOTION 4WD is also offered on certain 150 and 199 PS models. The new Transporter also features a new electro-mechanical power steering system, which has enabled VW to fit a number of new standard safety and assistance features, including driving steering recommendation and crosswind assist, as well as offering the options of park assist, lane assist, side protection, trailer assist, rear traffic alert and traffic sign recognition. Transporter 6.1 also offers an all-new infotainment systems, with SatNav Discover Pro plus. App Connect also now comes as standard to allow screen mirroring of mobile phones and access to certain apps while on the move. Wireless App-Connect, which isn’t offered on many cars currently, is now available as an option for the first time. To keep track of your vehicle, its mileage and your drivers, all T6.1 models also feature an integrated SIM card (eSIM), which opens up a new range of online-based functions and services via We Connect – Volkswagen

Commercial Vehicles’ connectivity solution – including eCall, breakdown call, vehicle health report and driving data plus parking position. There are some new practical touches, including a 230v power socket built into the driver’s seat, a lockable box inside the dual passenger bench and a new load-through system that uses space under the dual passenger bench to accommodate longer loads. This increases maximum cargo length from 2,450mm to 2,800mm in SWB Transporters and from 2,900mm to 3,300mm in LWB Transporters. Prices for the new panel van start from £21,635 (excl VAT and OTR) for the entry-level T26 Startline 90 PS SWB, rising to £36,915 for the T32 Highline LWB with 199 PS 7-speed DSG and 4MOTION four-wheel drive. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles invited us along to a range driving day, where we got to try out several of the most likely best selling versions in the beautiful setting of Hampton Manor, just outside Birmingham. First up was the likely best seller, the T28 SWB Highline 2.0 TDI 110PS 5-speed manual, www.companycarandvan.co.uk

which costs from £26,125 ex vat, in Copper Bronze Metallic. This version comes with a top speed of 103mph, a 0-62mph time of 9.5 seconds, CO2 emissions of 185-167g/km and a WLTP combined full consumption of 37.7mpg. There’s no mistaking this model’s heritage. There’s a new front end and the grilles, which previously were separated, have been closed slightly to create one very large air intake, which makes the van look wider. There’s also a double chrome bar, which runs across the front of the van and fits neatly into the new LED daytime running lights and narrower headlights. The rear end also features a new design of LED taillights. Regardless of these changes, it still looks reassuringly like a Transporter. Open the driver’s door and climb into what is the nicest interior of its class. As the owner of a Volkswagen T-Roc, many of the fittings are very familiar and it’s the most car-like van dash yet. This isn’t surprising when you realise that the T6.1 is only the second VW model to get the firm’s new MIB3 infotainment system, which is available with an 8.0” or 9.2” touchscreen display and redesigned menu system, plus the option of apps for your smartphone. The fit, finish and quality, I should add, are exceptional. Practicality has also been enhanced. There are two dash top storage spaces, one with a 12v socket, another in front of the passenger bench and a smaller one in the centre middle. Here you’ll also find two USB sockets and another 12v socket. Both door pockets are huge, with a useful smaller storage area higher up, one on each door, which are easy to reach. www.companycarandvan.co.uk

Only the glove box disappoints, being too small for much at all. The heating controls are in the middle of the dash above the manual gear stick. The steering wheel controls enable you to control the cruise control function, infotainment system and car settings. Everything is easy to reach from the driver’s seat and we took the opportunity to connect our iPhone to Apple CarPlay, for hands-free motoring, which was seamless. Standard equipment on the Startline and Highline includes Composition Colour DAB+ radio system with 6.5” touch-screen, four speakers, SD card slot, Bluetooth hands-free and 2 USB interfaces, Volkswagen AppConnect, Crosswind Assist, electric windows, electrically heated adjustable door mirrors, steering, height and longitudinally adjustable steering column and a leather multi-function steering wheel. ESC with brake assist, ABS, ASR, EDS and Hill Start Assist are also standard. Highline adds Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with speed limiter, an anti-theft alarm system with interior monitoring in cab, backup horn and towing protection, automatic headlights, automatic windscreen wipers with rain sensor, body-coloured door mirror housings, door handles and bumpers, climatic air con, a heated front windscreen and front and rear parking sensors. As with VW cars, the seats are nice and supportive and it’s easy to get comfortable. We began our drive on some narrow country lanes and the Transporter really does drive like an SUV. It’s supremely comfortable, soaking up the bumps in the road and handling the twisting road with aplomb. The rear load space contained 360kg of gravel on a pallet to give us an idea of how the Transporter works with a decent load in the back. All around vision in the cab is enhanced by the large wing mirrors and the driving position gives you a good view of the road ahead. On some larger roads and a dual carriageway with a 50 mph speed limit, the T6.1 doesn’t hang around, making light work of slow moving traffic and never feels underpowered. The five-speed manual gear change is smooth, aided by the

light clutch and the van felt stable and balanced on the road. Payload for this version is 886kg. On our circular test route we averaged 36.7 mpg. Next up was the T32 SWB Highline 2.0 TDI 150PS 7-speed DSG model which costs from £31,125 ex vat. While the additional power was welcome – this van will hit 62 mph in just seven seconds – it too came with a 360kg load of cement in the back and didn’t feel as poised on the road as the manual version. In addition, riding on its alloy wheels, it didn’t handle the road surface as well, either, allowing more vibration into the cabin. The larger payload of 1217kg, does make this version a more practical proposition. Fuel consumption on the WLTP cycle is a claimed 34.4 mpg, with our return of 34mpg almost exactly the same. As with the manual Highline, the addition of the Discover Media 8” SatNav with We Connect Plus for one year, improve the cabin experience, but will set you back an additional £1,320. Finally, we took the T28 SWB Startline 2.0 TDI 90PS 5spd manual out for a spin, covering an identical route and distance as to our first two drives. Costing from £22,105 ex vat, this version is more basic but still offers customers a lot of bang for their buck. The model was enhanced by the addition of the Discover Media 8” SatNav with We Connect Plus for 1 year, as well as Adaptive Cruise Control for £414. Extra cost options aren’t always buyers’ priorities but we’d add both if we were buying one. Again, the rear load space contained a 360kg load, this time of sand. With everything in place the actual payload is 913kg and this model was noticeably slower, taking 12.2 seconds to reach 62mph, with a top speed of 94mph. On its steel wheels it rode well and we managed 38.9 mpg on our test route, almost identical to the VW claimed WLTP figure of 39.2 mpg. I personally preferred the no cost extra colour of Ascot Grey that this van came in, a putty-like off white, which with its steel wheels made this version, looks-wise anyway, like a classic Transporter of yesteryear. In conclusion, I think that Volkswagen is right: the 110PS version will be the biggest seller, in all probability in Highline spec and as a T28. For those of you spending long hours on the motorway, pay extra for the Discover Media infotainment system and add Adaptive Cruise Control as well. If you’re just driving locally, then the standard spec, even on Startline models, is really very impressive. Only warning is that the price can start to get high if you add lots of extras.

Verdict Familiar Volkswagen quality, combined with improved tech, make the latest Transporter the medium panel van we would most like to spend time in. CC&V RATING: N N N N

ë-Dispatch: The electric van with loads of appeal Citroën has unveiled a new 100% electric compact van, the ë-Dispatch – part of the manufacturer’s “electrification for all” offensive which will result in the launch of six further electrified models during 2020. The new 100% electric version of Dispatch offers fleet and business users practical solutions to the challenges of mobility in urban environments – and in rural areas too thanks to the impressive operating range, which is sufficient for most journeys. ë-Dispatch makes it possible for all users to conduct their business in a new way, directly participating in energy transition. With no compromise in terms of performance and features – which have made Dispatch such a success – ë-Dispatch brings a new dimension in terms of comfort and greater peace-of-mind to all tradespeople: The operating range suitable for most daily tasks, with 143 miles on the WLTP cycle with a 50 kWh battery and 205 miles on the WLTP cycle with a 75 kWh battery. It is also more comfortable – with a freedom from vibration and noise, and remarkably smooth handling; and its is eminently drivable. Crucially for many urban operators, it gives owners freedom to access restricted low emission CO2 zones. All in all it builds a package that is less stress to own and drive – but without any compromise of load capacity, which remains unchanged on the combustion engine versions. Citroën expects to position ë-Dispatch at the top of the BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) market, with an offering that is highly adapted to the needs of fleet and business LCV customers. Totally integrated into the Dispatch range, ë-Dispatch is only visually different on the outside due to the charging port positioned on the left-hand front wing. Plus a blank section in the grille at the front, and a new “ë” badge fitted to the right of the grille and again on the left-hand rear door. Built on the Groupe PSA EMP2 multi-energy platform, this electric version of Dispatch is offered with two battery powertrains – giving two levels of vehicle range – allowing every operator to select the one that best suits their needs and budget: • 143 miles on the WLTP cycle (available with XS and M body styles) fitted with a 50 kWh battery, made up of 18 separate modules. • 205 miles on the WLTP cycle (available with M and XL body styles) fitted with a 75 kWh battery, made up of 27 individual modules. compact exterior dimensions, while offering modularity, ergonomics, interior space, storage space and optimised loading capacity, making it an ideal work tool. ë-Dispatch is available in three lengths, including the XS model at 4.60m – designed for easier access to urban centres and for unfettered parking. This length, coupled with a volume of up to 5.1m3, makes for an extremely compact van. ë-Dispatch is just 1.90m tall, which means it can go where many competitors cannot, such as underground car parks and shopping centres, etc, but with payloads of up to 1,275kg it has the versatility you need. On the charge The charging port is on the left-hand front wing on ë-Dispatch and charging operates when in Park mode. There are three charging modes available: Home charging, requiring a mode 2 cable (for charging at home, at a place of work or in a car park). Compatible with a standard domestic socket (cable available as an accessory). Private or public accelerated charging, needing a ‘Wallbox’ at home and a mode 3 cable. 32A cable (supplied as standard with the vehicle). In this format it charges from 0 to 100% in less than 8 hours (7.4 kW Wallbox). Super-fast charging at a mode 4 public charging point (cable incorporated into charger).Up to 100 kW. Can charge a 50 kWh battery to 80% in 30 minutes and a 75 kWh battery to 80% in 45 minutes. The warranty period for the battery is eight years or 100,000 miles (up to 70% battery capacity). There are three options available: The lead-in X version, incorporating

essential items such as an RD6 MP3 Bluetooth® Radio, electric and heated mirrors, and an electric parking brake. The Enterprise version – the most flexible model at the heart of the range – includes all equipment from the X version, with the addition of rear parking sensors, air-conditioning, alarm, automatic lights and wipers, 7-inch colour touchscreen with Apple CarPlay™/Android Auto, and the brand’s Moduwork® dual passenger bench with fold-up outer seat. The Driver version, made for mile-eaters, includes all equipment of the Enterprise version, plus additional front parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, a Visio Park 180° rear parking camera, 17-inch ‘Curve’ alloy wheels, Citroën Connect Navigation with voice recognition, and a Safety Pack (lane departure warning, speed limit recognition, intelligent speed adaptation, driver attention alert, smart beam headlights and Active Safety Brake). There’s no compromise on driver amenities, such as storage facility within the cabin. This is cleverly positioned all around the cabin, so that everything is in its place and there is no need to worry. A few examples: there is a net on the console with electric parking-brake (between the driver’s and passenger’s seats), the lower glovebox is fitted with a jack-plug and 12V sockets, there is a large storage bin under the passenger’s bench-seat and there are cup-holders on the dashboard. Overall, ë-Dispatch has nearly 100 litres of storage. Toyota commercial offer has strong focus on EVs in the future Gareth Matthews, LCV Manager at Toyota UK, promises there are some tasty EV treats coming to fleets in 2021. Andrew Walker asked the questions for Company Car & Van CC&V: Disappointingly, the CV Show was cancelled and we didn’t get to see the new Proace electric van. Judging by the number of views on our website, the electric van sector is very exciting. Can you tell our readers when they will be able to get their hands on one? Gareth Matthews: The Toyota Proace EV is expected to be in the UK from quarter one next year. We are looking forward to introducing this van to our retailer network and customers and are working on preparation and training ahead of its launch. This will strengthen the Toyota CV range and provide us with new opportunities. CC& V: The Proace City is now in Toyota showrooms, giving the brand its first small van. Will it be sold through all Toyota sites or

we first launched our new LCV Specialist Business Centre programme, we had 25 centres participating. Since we have launched the Toyota Professional branding that will be coming into force this year, we have seen an overwhelming uplift of more than 60 per cent of our network signing up to participate in the new programme. CC&V: There is an electric Proace City in the pipeline for 2021. Do you have any dates yet for it’s arrival here in the UK? We do have a Proace City EV in the pipeline and we are planning to introduce this in 2022. Our focus currently is on training and preparation for the launch of the Proace EV next year with our retailer network so we will be ready to go when it arrives.

The new Toyota Proace City

Toyota takes a lead in the urban jungle with all-new Proace City Best-in-class load carrying gives new model instant appeal with multi-drop, short-haul delivery drivers Toyota has significantly strengthened its presence in the UK van market with the introduction of the all-new Proace City, a compact van that offers a wealth of best-inclass load-carrying capabilities and high equipment specifications for the customer who needs their business transport to double as a mobile office. At a stroke, this new compact van range extends the brand’s reach to 80 per cent of the national light commercial vehicle market, joining the established Proace medium duty van, Hilux pick-up and Land Cruiser Commercial. Its arrival coincides with the launch of Toyota Professional, Toyota’s new programme of services for its new and established LCV customers. At launch, there is a five-model Proace City line-up with panel vans in short (4,403mm) and long (4,753) body styles. All can carry two 48 | July 2020 | Company Car & Van

Europallets in the easy-access load area, with slide-opening side doors and twin side-hinged rear doors that open to 180 degrees. Load area is 3.3m3 for the short body version and 3.9m3 for the long and the payload is up to one tonne. If the interior space can’t take everything that’s needed, Proace City has a class-leading 1.5-tonne towing capability. Yet more space can be freed up with the clever Smart Cargo feature (standard on Icon, an option on Active grade). This uses a folding front passenger bench to add an extra 0.4m3, while also increasing the maximum load length by 1.3m.

Two 1.5-litre diesel powertrains are available – 75 and 100hp – with stop-start to support fuel economy and lower emissions. Maintenance schedules are up to 25,000 miles/ two years, reflecting the model’s built-in reliability. All new Proace City vans are covered by a comprehensive five-year/100,000-mile manufacturer’s warranty along with five year’s roadside assistance. Residual values are expected to be strong, in line with those achieved by the Proace mediumduty van. Continued on page 50

Toyota Proace takes battery warranty to the next level Electric versions of Toyota’s popular Proace LCV have finally been revealed, with the electric variant arriving next year in the UK. The new model is based on the EMP2 multi-energy platform, developed in conjunction with the PSA Group. The Proace’s qualities are well known and the Electric now adds some fantastic batterypower statistics to go alongside its highly regarded versatility and driver appeal. Chief among them is the range: up to 230 km (143 miles) of WLTP range from the 50 kWh battery and a whopping 330 km (205 miles) of WLTP range with 75 kWh battery. With figures like these the old image of an electric van as being little use unless chained to a route no further than 20 miles from base are blown away; this is a motorway cruiser capable of acting as a major point-to-point delivery workhorse as well as an urban ‘final mile’ delivery pony. There are three body lengths to consider (Compact, Medium and Long), as well as a double cab with a platform (Double Cab) and a truck with open body or tipper, and no end of body variants. The other key fact is payload: up to 1,275 kg depending on the particular version and up to 6.6 m3 of cargo volume from vehicles with gross vehicle weights ranging from 2,800 to

3,100 kg. On the road performance is sound rather than striking: 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 13.1 seconds and a top speed of 130 km/h (81 mph). But to compensate, on-board charging is quick: single-phase 7.4 kW or three-phase 11 kW DC fast charging (by 80% SOC) in about 30 minutes (50 kWh) or about 45 minutes (75 kWh) using 100 kW charger. Final stat to blow the mind: Toyota is offering a battery warranty of up to 15 years – or a million kilometres! Specification highlights include three front

seats (including Compact) and the availability of a Smart Cargo system, which features an opening bulkhead and lifting front passenger seat base to increase load length capacity by 1.16m and overall load volume by an extra half a cubic metre. A strong new frontal design clearly marks it out as a member of the contemporary Toyota family. With the added reassurance of the extended battery warranty, the Proace Electric is sure to be a major player among multi-drop couriers operating in the urban environment where low emissions are a key factor .

smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Smart Cargo system, three front seats, automatic wipers, electronic parking brake, reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors, cruise control with speed limiter, front fog lights and cornering lights. Options for Active models include the Smart Cargo system in a package that also includes the electronic parking brake, driver’s seat lumbar support and slide/recline adjustment of the passenger two-seat bench. For Icon models, a Toyota Safety Sense package can be specified together with 3.5-inch colour multi-information display, immobiliser and alarm. Both grades can be specified with a tow bar. The optional safety pack for the Proace City Icon models includes a Pre-Collision System, Road Sign Assist, Lane Departure Alert and a “coffee cup” alert that recommends the driver take a break if they have spent a long time at the wheel.
