The fleet industry, like everything else, has slowed down this year, but there’s no doubting that it is finding its feet again. Fleet managers and company car drivers alike will be looking to September when the number plate change signals that new company vehicle sales are on their way. What Covid-19 did not do is slow down the inevitable surge towards plug-in cars, both hybrid and pure electric, which, when coupled with the latest tax incentives, has led to an influx of new and tempting models. This list includes our August cover star, the SKODA Octavia. The iV is a plug-in model that follows its larger sibling the Superb in offering SMEs a viable alternative to that trusty diesel. It also includes Jaguar’s full-electric I-Pace which has been tweaked to offer customers more for their money; we’ve plenty of details inside. Just before lockdown kicked in we had the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the KIA Soul EV and the DS3 e-Tense, both of which make a pretty convincing case for going electric. BMW is increasing customer choice when it comes to plug-in hybrid offerings, with the electrified BMW 3 Series line-up expanded from the one model currently available to a

total of four. And Hyundai offers the exciting Kona Hybrid to an already stunning range of electrified cars. And Volkswagen has announced some major updates to its flagship Arteon range including – you’ve guessed it – a plug-in version, the eHybrid1.

Fast charge for iX3 BMW has taken the wraps off the first fully electric BMW X model, the iX3. This carbon emissions-free executive SUV offers travel, dynamic handling and performance with the comfort, functionality and spaciousness that customers would expect of a BMW Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) – but with a pure-electric drive system, a plug-in hybrid system or highly efficient petrol and diesel engines. To launch in 2021, the new BMW iX3 will sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 6.8 seconds, with a range of up to 285 miles (WLTP test cycle). Plugging the vehicle into a direct current rapid-charging station opens the door to charging outputs of up to 150 kW, meaning the high-voltage battery can be charged from 0 to 80 per cent of its full capacity in 34 minutes. Drivers can inject the power required to add 62 miles to the car’s driving range (in the WLTP cycle) in just 10 minutes.

Ariya beauty from Nissan

Nissan has made its first entry into the electric coupé crossover sector with the launch of the all-new Ariya. It will offer, Nissan says, powerful acceleration and smooth, quiet operation, as well as an interior with a welcoming, luxurious lounge-like atmosphere. At its heart are a host of autonomous driving features, including voice personal assistance and seamless connectivity. Range will be estimated at up to 310 miles on WLTP combined cycle, making the Ariya the perfect partner for daily commutes and road trips alike.

“The Nissan Ariya is a truly beautiful and remarkable car,” Nissan managing director Ashwani Gupta said. “It enables you to go further, easier and in comfort. Clio tops the lot

Westminster birthday gift Range Rover is helping mark its 50th anniversary with a series of special new editions: the Westminster, Westminster Black Edition and an exclusive SVAutobiography Dynamic Black. Powered by efficient straight-six Ingenium diesel engines, incorporating 48V Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) technology for reduced fuel consumption and heightened refinement, the new models are available in 300PS (221kW) and 350PS (258kW) outputs. The new Westminster Edition is based on the Vogue model and available with a choice of both diesel and plug-in hybrid electric power. The all-new Renault Clio has added to its awards collection after taking the top prize in DieselCar & EcoCar Magazine’s annual Top 50 list of the best cars on sale in the UK. More than 200 new cars were evaluated but the Clio’s breadth of abilities across its comprehensive line-up saw it take the plaudits, with Ian Robertson, Editor and Publisher, saying: “British buyers love superminis, so it’s great to report the Clio has never been better and is our favourite new car of 2020.” Particular praise was given to the All-New Clio’s advanced interior, described as “a revelation, with an upmarket design and clever infotainment system.” It’s not just the interior that impressed the judges, though. This affords impressive fuel economy returns of 64.2mpg and CO2 emissions as low as 98g/km, while also being able to travel up to 38mph in all-electric mode. A focus on economy doesn’t mean performance has been compromised. The Clio Hybrid is the most powerful in the line-up with 140hp. The petrol engine mobilises a maximum torque of 144Nm, while the electric motor generates 205Nm. The HSG (High-Voltage Starter Generator) delivers an addition 50Nm resulting in excellent acceleration – especially at speeds of between 50mph to 75mph where the battery assists with sharper responses than a conventional petrol or diesel engine, enabling a 50mph to 75mph time of just 6.9 seconds. For many customers, this will not only be their first Lexus, but also their first luxury vehicle. It is designed for modern urban motorists who seek a fresh, contemporary and dynamic take on luxury driving, something that is not just new and exciting, but also relevant to their lifestyles. Infused with dynamic attitude, the UX is engineered to deliver quick and engaging driving with a Lexus-smooth demeanour, making it a unique entry in the luxury compact SUV market. In the UK, the UX is offered exclusively with a fourth generation self-charging hybrid powertrain. In selected markets, a 2.0-litre petrol version is available. The entry point to the range is the UX 250h. With 181bhp/135kW (184 DIN hp) total system output, it combines high fuel efficiency with a very smooth, natural and responsive driving experience. The UX’s new 2.0-litre in-line four-cylinder engine achieves class-leading 41 per cent thermal efficiency, thanks to its use of revolutionary laser-clad intake valve seats with an all-new intake port profile; a high compression ratio (14:1); D4-S fuel injection combining direct and secondary port injectors to achieve high-speed combustion. VVT-iE intelligent variable valvetiming with an electric actuator on the intake side also improves driveability while reducing emissions. The UX’s hybrid system couples this new

UX 250h opens the door to Lexus premium quality engine with two electric motor/generators in a new generation hybrid transaxle that is more compact, lighter and has less internal friction than previous Lexus hybrid systems. The Power Control Unit (PCU) is more powerful yet is 20 per cent smaller and 10 per cent lighter. Optimising the level of electric motor assistance and engine rpm produces a linear acceleration feel without the engine running at high revs. Engine speed is synchronised with vehicle speed to create an immediate and continuous acceleration feel. The speed at which the hybrid system can shut off the petrol engine, such as when driving on long downward slopes, has been raised to 71mph. The new, compact and lightweight nickelmetal hydride (NiMH) battery and compact cooling system are located below the rear seat, which helps give the vehicle its low centre of gravity. The UX 250h is available with either front-wheel drive or E-Four electric all-wheel drive. The E-Four all-wheel drive system uses a separate, dedicated high-torque electric motor integrated into the rear differential. Power distribution between the front and rear axles is automatically optimised by the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system when accelerating, cornering, or driving on slippery surfaces. E-Four provides stable driving on uphill slopes or snow-covered roads with lower fuel consumption than a conventional all-wheel drive system with a power split device and

driveshaft. E-Four does more than assist traction in slippery conditions: it can also actively improve stability by adjusting rear-wheel power to help correct over or understeer. The UX 250h is very responsive to drive and, like all Lexus hybrids, it offers better fuel efficiency and lower emissions than other petrol or diesel vehicles in its class. It also requires no plugging in for recharging and has no issues where driving range is concerned. In realworld city driving it can use electric power for a significant proportion of every journey – up to 55 per cent, depending on the driving conditions. When cruising or accelerating gently, the front electric motor (and rear motor on all-wheel drive models) can propel the car with electricity supplied by the hybrid battery. In this situation, the vehicle runs almost silently, uses no petrol and produces zero emissions. Under full acceleration, power from the electric motor(s) instantaneously supplements the performance of the 2.0-litre petrol engine. Together they deliver a potent surge of torque, providing linear acceleration precisely when it is needed. Under braking, or when the driver takes their foot off the accelerator, regenerative braking harnesses kinetic energy to produce electricity. This, together with electric power produced during normal driving conditions, is stored in the hybrid battery. This means the UX 250h never has to be plugged in to a power source for recharging.

Hyundai aiming for top spot with an electrified range Hyundai Motor UK is aiming to become one of the nation’s largest provider of electric cars, with delivery times reduced to as little as a few days. Hyundai’s electric line-up is impressive, with the Kona Hybrid and Kona Electric joined by the IONIQ Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid, electric and mild hybrid Tucson models. By the end of the year three-quarters of the entire Hyundai range will be electrified, with the addition of new 48V mild hybrid i20 and i30 and Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid Santa Fe – and more to come. Hyundai already offers the broadest range of electrified powertrains in the industry and now with increased supply and no waiting time, affordable low or zero emission vehicles are more accessible than ever. Leading this charge is the Kona Hybrid, launched last year to respond to customers’ demands for more SUV-bodied eco-mobility models. In addition to its bold design, it offers an efficient full hybrid powertrain and features a range of technology enhancements including advanced Bluelink® connectivity features, as well as state-of-the-art infotainment features. New Kona Hybrid also introduces the optional SmartSense™ safety packages, allowing customers to choose from a range of relevant active safety and driving assistance systems. The Kona Hybrid takes its drivetrain from the proven IONIQ Hybrid, with the Kappa 1.6 GDi Atkinson Cycle combustion engine working with the 1.56kWh battery and 32kW motor to deliver a maximum hybrid system power of 141PS and 265Nm to the front wheels, via a 6 speed dual clutch transmission. New Kona Hybrid takes the multi-link rear suspension from the Kona Premium GT models for drivers looking for an enhanced driving experience, whilst owners looking for increased practicality can now combine hybrid power with a towing capacity of up to 1300kg. Models from the Premium trim upwards, offer a 10.25” touchscreen navigation system which features Bluelink® telematics. Bluelink® is Hyundai’s smartphone app based connected car service that enables drivers to carry out a number of different functions while away from their Kona Hybrid, including allowing drivers to unlock the car doors remotely and reminding the driver of the vehicle’s parked location. Bluelink® will also be able to advise drivers of nearby on street and off street parking facilities, fuel station pricing information and Hyundai dealership information. From £22,495, the Kona Hybrid SE includes climate control, an electric parking brake and steering wheel mounted gearshift paddles. design bespoke to the hybrid model and Blue Drive badging to the wings and tailgate. Interior changes for the hybrid model include white accents around the air vents and gear lever surround, as well as accompanying white stitching to the seats. Kona Hybrid SE also features a number of key items found in the non-hybrid model including the 7” touchscreen audio system with standard subscription free Apple Car Play™ and Android Auto™, rear parking sensors with camera and standard Lane Keep Assist (LKA) and Driver Attention Alert (DAA). Customers will also have the option to specify the SmartSense 1 safety pack that includes Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) with pedestrian & cycle recognition and Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with stop and go function. The Kona Hybrid Premium, from £24,295, continues with the same high level of specification found in the non-hybrid Premium trim level which includes features such as the KRELL premium sound system, keyless entry with stop/start button, privacy glass, wireless charging for compatible mobile devices, automatic windscreen wipers and front fog lamps. One model series, two versions! Volkswagen has taken the wraps off its new Arteon and unveiled a second version – the new Arteon Shooting Brake – at the same time. This model is a completely new interpretation of the estate concept. It won’t be the only new VW to see light of day in 2020, as the company’s chief operating officer is quick to point out. “Volkswagen will launch 34 new models this year. There has never been such an extensive model initiative in the history of the brand,“ says Ralf Brandstätter. “The Arteon Shooting Brake extends our model range in the important midsize-segment. It will set standards in its class with its dynamic design, high functionality and modern technologies.“ Stylish and dynamic, the Arteon has been the Volkswagen ‘Gran Turismo’ since 2017, and Volkswagen is now unveiling a far- reaching update to the model series. The new Arteon and Arteon Shooting Brake are characterised by an expressive and avant-garde design. The distinctive features include a front end with a new continuous light strip, striking chrome bars and new air intakes at the bottom. The radiator grille and the long, wide bonnet are combined as a formal unit and make both Arteon versions stand out as the

face in the crowd – and that continues at night thanks to a unique LED light signature at the front and rear. The two new models – the Arteon and Arteon Shooting Brake – are both characterised by athletic lines. However, they differ significantly from each other from the B-pillars to the rear. Whereas on the fastback model, the roof and window contours are swept down in parallel from the B-pillars and therefore become part of the coupé-shaped rear, the roof and window lines are extended towards the rear on the Shooting Brake and end in the new roof spoiler. At the top, the window line runs parallel to the roof. However, at the bottom the lines move upwards towards the D-pillars, thus making the window area at the rear narrower and more striking. All elements together form the sporty rear profile typical for a Shooting Brake. All new technical developments are applied in both body versions. For the first time in the Arteon, this includes a plug-in hybrid drive. Arteon models are among the first of their kind to be available with a plug-in hybrid drive in the luxury mid-sized vehicle segment. Arteon R The Arteon R will be the flagship in the model series. With this model, Volkswagen is pushing further into the premium performance segment. It is not just the unadulterated output that is fascinating here, but also the way that the vehicles convert their power into propulsion. Thanks to a new progressive technology known as R-Performance Torque Vectoring, the torque is distributed variably both between the axles and also between the rear wheels depending on the driving situation by means of selective wheel torque control. And this creates a new level of driving dynamics in this category. Plenty of space for driver, occupants and luggage. The Arteon is characterised by a highly functional overall concept. All occupants in the front and rear of both Arteon versions benefit from the modular transverse matrix (MQB). The maximum legroom at the rear is 1,016 mm and is a benchmark value in this class. Thanks to the unique design of its roof section, the Shooting Brake offers more headroom at both the front and rear. As standard, the rear seat backrest can be folded asymmetrically in both models. Travel Assist makes driving in stop-and-go traffic and through roadworks in particular noticeably more convenient. An integral part of Travel Assist is the ACC with predictive speed control. The adaptive cruise control reacts to speed limits, towns, bends, roundabouts and junctions with corresponding speed adaptation. The Lane Assist system keeps the vehicle in the centre of its lane while Autonomous Emergency Braking Front Assist with Pedestrian Monitoring also form part of the range of Travel Assist functions. The Rear View reversing camera (optional) was further enhanced and now also features, among other things, a Corner View (which expands the camera image on the infotainment system screen from 90 degrees to a wide angle of 170 degrees) and a special trailer view (of the tow bar from above to facilitate hitching up the trailer). New cockpit environment in the interior. In the interior, the model series impresses with a newly designed cockpit environment that lends the Arteon an even greater feeling of exclusivity. Operation has been made easier through touch sliders for the automatic air conditioner and a new multifunction steering wheel with touch controls. Also new: the now wireless integration of apps via “AppConnect Wireless” for “Apple CarPlay” and “Android Auto” (Google), and a powerful 700 watt high-end sound system from the audio specialists harman/kardon, which has been customised specifically for the Arteon and Arteon Shooting Brake (both optional). Background lighting that can be adjusted in up to 30 colours is also optionally available to give the new interior an attractive finishing touch. Soul puts Kia on the EV street Launched in 2009, the Soul has sold over 1.6 million units, mostly in the USA, the market it was designed for. There has been a Soul EV since 2014 and in 2019 it outsold combustion engine versions in the UK, encouraging KIA to launch the new Soul model solely as an EV. It comes with the same powertrain as the e-Niro and its sibling, the Hyundai Kona Electric. This is a good thing. It’s a tried and tested formula which, if driven carefully, has a 280-mile electric range, up from 132 miles on the last version. From launch, only the higher range version KIA battery with 64kWh is being offered. This comes with a decent 201bhp, plus 291lb ft of torque, giving you a rapid 0-62mph time of 7.9sec. Top speed in common with other EVs, is a more mundane 103mph. As with the e-Niro, the Soul rides rather well. Despite a kerb weight of 1682kg, the suspension, with dynamic dampers, allows the car to ride comfortably over bumpy roads. It’s eerily quiet at low speeds with some outside road and wind noise only noticeable at 50mph and above. With its auto gear box, it’s great to drive in town and selecting Drive, Park or Reverse just requires a twist of the rotary gear knob. It’s certainly a relaxing car to drive. There are four driving modes: Eco+, Eco, Normal or Sport, leaving it up to you to choose

which mode suits the drive best. You can also customise the amount of regenerative braking required. Again, there are four levels offered, None, One, Two or Three, and its reassuringly easy to find out which one you’re most comfortable with. Suffice to say, drive the Soul in Eco+ with Regain Three selected and the car is slower to drive, with a more noticeable slow down as you approach a junction or traffic light. Opt for Sport and Regain One and it is, surprise, surprise, quicker and slows down more gradually. You can select the amount of regeneration you’d like via a pair of paddles behind the steering wheel. A Smart Eco Pedal Guide display within the instrument cluster also keeps the driver aware of real time battery usage. Like any new car you get into, the Soul EV takes a little time to get used to. The

regenerative braking is pretty straightforward to use, but it’s easy, as we found out, to drive off with the air con turned on and then wonder why the cabin isn’t getting warm. Within the heating controls there is a separate button to turn the heating on and you need to push this in, otherwise the car will only blow cold air. Using the most common home 7.2kW charger means a total AC charge time from zero to full capacity in 9 hours 35 minutes. If you use the more powerful 50kW charger, available in many places, this gives you a DC charge time of one hour, 15 minutes to 80 per cent charge. This is ideal if you’re on a longer journey, enabling you to plug in to top up the battery. Price for company car drivers is often not as relevant as it is for private motorists, but a Soul EV costs £34,295 after the Government grant. More important for business users is the 0% BIK carrot currently being offered from April 1 by the Chancellor. Couple this with rentals from £380 + vat per month and the Soul EV is an attractive proposition.

VERDICT The Soul EV may divide opinion but that 0% BIK carrot, coupled with its range of 280 miles, should encourage take up. CC&V RATING: N N N N

PHEV’d up and ready to go Peugeot unveils exciting new hybrid line-up Peugeot’s next-generation of full electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) offer company car drivers and businesses substantial savings, thanks to significantly lower Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) rates and the possibility to claim back Capital Allowance. The first of Peugeot’s next-generation electric vehicles, the all-new e-208 – capable of up to 217 miles from a single charge under WLTP testing – will deliver lower company car tax rates in the future, as the Government encourages the take up of low and zeroemission models. Peugeot’s growing line-up of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles will also attract lower BiK rates, and be eligible for Capital Allowance claims. In this new tax year, full electric vehicles registered will see their BiK rates fall to 0%* (from the previous 16% in tax year 2019/2020), rising to 1% the next year, and to 2% the following year, under current Government plans. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles have also experienced a fall in company car tax rates. For vehicles with CO2 emissions between 1-50g/ km, the amount paid in BiK will depend on the electric range of the vehicle. The Peugeot 3008 HYBRID4 achieves CO2

emissions from as low as 29g/km under WLTP testing, with an all-electric range of up to 40 miles on a full charge. The new BiK rate for the 3008 HYBRID4 in 2020 is 6% (having dropped from 16% in the previous year), rising to 7% in 2021/2022 and 8% the following year. The entire Peugeot range of BEV and PHEV models will be eligible for Capital Allowance claims. Through a Capital Allowance claim, businesses can subtract the whole or part of their vehicles’ value from their profits before tax. Under current guidelines, in the first year of purchase, businesses can deduct the entire value of the asset from profits before taxes for cars that emit less than 50g/km CO2. David Peel, Managing Director of Peugeot UK, said: “The tax and running cost benefits of owning a fully electric vehicle or a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle don’t just extend to private buyers, businesses and fleet operators can benefit too. With costs often at the forefront of fleet buyers’ minds, the tax savings from EVs and PHEVs can be crucial when it comes to choosing which vehicles to run.” Peugeot recently announced a two-year partnership with Pod Point as the company’s exclusive supplier of electric vehicle charge points. Pod Point is the official charge point supplier for the Peugeot 3008 SUV HYBRID or HYBRID4, 508 HYBRID, all-new 508 SW HYBRID, as well as the all-new e-208 and e-2008 SUV models. Grant funding is available

for the first-time installation of home and workplace charge points. All Peugeot PHEV and BEV models can be charged from a domestic power socket and 7kW charge point. Rapid charge is also available on BEV models, which achieves 80 per cent of battery capacity in half an hour using a public rapid charge point. For public chargers, Peugeot has partnered with Polar Plus, offering new BEV and PHEV buyers a free six-month subscription to the UK’s largest public charging network. All Peugeot PHEV and BEV models also qualify for the London Congestion Charging Cleaner Vehicle Discount, gaining exemption from the London Congestion Charge and Ultra Low Emissions Zone. By 2023, Peugeot will provide an electrified variant across its entire model line-up. The Peugeot Boxer Electric is due for launch in 2020, as well as the e-Expert. However, an extensive range of Peugeot PHEV and BEV models (including the 3008 SUV HYBRID or HYBRID4, 508 HYBRID, all-new 508 SW HYBRID, all-new e-208 and all-new e-2008 SUV) are now available to order. This can be done from the comfort of your home using Peugeot’s Buy Online platform, where retail customers can configure their chosen Peugeot, personalise their finance and then place an order, which will be delivered as soon as UK Government guidelines allow.

To complete the four-model line-up, both models are offered with the intelligent all-wheel drive system, BMW xDrive, as well as rear-wheel drive. Brake-energy recuperation provides highly efficient battery charging on the move. With a BMW i Wallbox, these charging operations can be completed within 2.4 hours up to 80 per cent of its total capacity and 3.4 hours to achieve full capacity. The high-voltage battery can also be charged at conventional household sockets, using the standard charging cable. Using this method, the completely discharged battery can absorb 80 per cent of its total capacity within 4.2 hours while 5.7 hours is the estimated period required for a 100% recharge. The plug-in hybrid system of the new BMW 330e Touring also comprises a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and an output of 184hp, along with an electric motor integrated in the 8-speed Steptronic transmission, which generates a peak output of 113hp. The total system output of 252hp can be increased by an additional 40hp for up to 10 seconds to deliver a total of 292hp under especially high loads – all helping to maintain the 3 Series’ sporting

heritage. This standard XtraBoost is available in SPORT mode, which can be activated by the driving experience switch. The maximum system torque of the plug-in hybrid drive in the new BMW 330e Touring is 420Nm. The new BMW 330e Touring can accelerate from 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds (provisional figure) and its maximum speed is 136mph (provisional figure). In Hybrid mode the new BMW 330e Touring can reach up to 68mph when running on electric power alone. The combustion engine only switches on at higher speeds or when there are high load requirements. When the Electric mode is activated with the eDrive button, the vehicle can reach speeds up to 87mph drawing on the power of its eDrive alone. Thanks to state-of-the-art cell technology, the lithium-ion high-voltage battery in the new BMW 330e Touring has an electrically powered range of 34 miles (provisional figure*). Two all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid versions of the BMW 3 Series will also launch alongside the BMW 330e Touring. Featuring the same plug-in hybrid system as the corresponding RWD models, the new BMW 330e xDrive Saloon returns a combined fuel consumption from 166mpg, combined power consumption: from 16.7 kWh/100 km and combined CO2 emissions from 38g/km and in the new BMW 330e xDrive Touring combined fuel consumption is from 156mpg, combined power consumption from 17.8 kWh/100 km and combined CO2 emissions of 42g/km (provisional figures). Great to look at, great to drive Andrew Walker Mazda’s designers are on a roll. The facelifted CX-5 and CX-3 and the new Mazda3, our Small Car of the Year, are all fleet friendly, as well as being very attractive, and things have just got better for the marque with the launch of the new Mazda CX-30 mid-range crossover. One made its way to Company Car Towers recently, enabling us to give it the once over. We were testing the likely bestselling 2.0 litre 180ps GT Sport petrol version, which benefits from Mazda’s new Skyactiv-X petrol engine. It uses spark-controlled compression ignition and a mild-hybrid set-up to reduce emissions, resulting in a pleasingly low 105g/km CO2 figure on our test car. Skyactiv-X also has the benefit of appealing to both corporate customers and retail folk alike. It’s decently equipment. Entry level SE-L is fitted with 16”alloys, LED headlights, a head-up display, rear parking sensors and an 8.8” infotainment system, that includes SatNav and smartphone integration. The SE-L Lux adds a reversing camera, front parking sensors and keyless entry. We were testing the GT Sport version, which is further enhanced by leather seat trim, a powered drivers seat, a heated steering wheel, door mirror tilt down function when reversing and the 12-speaker Bose surround sound system, with Bose CenterPoint, BassMatch and AudioPilot technology. If you stare long and hard at the CX-30 it looks well, just like the CX-3 only slightly larger. Like its smaller sibling, its narrow front LED headlights give it a sporty look. At the back, the slim tail-lights have the same effect. They’re shallow and wide, sitting across the rear wings and hatchback. Inside, the minimalist dashboard puts all switchgear in easy reach, with a dash top-mounted infotainment system controlled by a rotary dial located between the two front seats. The system graphics are excellent, particularly those used in the SatNav and are a real improvement over the old Mazda system. You can connect your smart phone to either Apple CarPlay or Android Auto using the USB connection. The screen is bright and clear and again, changing functions can be selected using the rotary dial. If you need a load lugger, the boot offers a decent 421 litres of storage, increasing to 1,398 litres with the back seats folded down. Access to the load www.companycarandvan.co.uk

Mazda CX-30 in Skyactiv mode: ‘A slick gearbox and sharp handling make it nimble around town, with little body roll by SUV standards ... an enjoyable car to drive that’s also stunning to look at...’ area is decent and the boot will comfortably fit three large suitcases in, if required. On the road and there’s no doubt that the CX-30 is a comfortable motorway cruiser, and the SkyActiv-X technology is great for fuel economy, as we averaged 42mpg in our week on board, (the claimed is 47.9mpg,). On the downside, however, the lack of low rev oomph is really noticeable. For example, if motorway traffic slows and then speeds up again, the Mazda, which requires 3,000rpm to reach it’s maximum torque of 224Nm, is very slow to react. You have to disengage cruise control, change down from sixth gear to fourth, just to get the car back up to cruising speed. Annoying to say the least. Mazda claim a 0-62mph time of 8.5 seconds, but with four adults and associated luggage on board, getting to 62mph, takes a bit longer. On a more positive note, the six-speed manual gearbox is slick and around town the CX-30 is small enough to feel nimble. There’s little or no body roll by SUV standards and it’s an enjoyable car to be in. It’s also stunning to look at, very well built, features all of the latest tech and safety and it’s available to fleet customers at a decent cost. For business customers who choose a petrol CX-30, it comes both with attractive contract hire rates for the more powerful 180PS version, just £215 per month + vat, with the 122PS version offering

drivers a BIK from as little as £101 per month + vat. To our mind, our Small Car of the Year, the Mazda3, combined with a diesel engine, is more fun to drive but we have to concede that the CX-30 looks better.

ON TEST: DS 3 Crossback E-TENSE

Premium DS3 Crossback E-Tense offers real-time electric driving Andrew Walker DS is the premium brand of the PSA Group and is making in-roads into a sector long dominated by Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Two models launched in 2019, one of which, the DS3 Crossback, now comes with an electric drivetrain, called the E-Tense. It’s an all-electric B-segment SUV that’s offered with the same electric set-up as our current Small EV Car of the Year, the Peugeot e-208. The PSA Group is deadly serious about EVs and the electric drivetrain of DS 3 Crossback E-Tense is a 100kW (136hp) electric motor with 260Nm of torque, linked to a 50kWh Lithium-ion battery and a system for recovering energy during deceleration and braking. The potential range is 200 miles on the WLTP drive cycle. Three driving modes are offered: ECO to maximise range, NORMAL and SPORT with extra torque. These are complemented by two energy recovery options, inherited from the PSA Group’s successful Formula E team, which can be controlled by the driver: NORMAL to simulate the behaviour of an internal combustion engine and BRAKE, which decelerates at 1.2 m/s. E-Tense customers can choose from pretty much the same specs as offered on petrol and diesel versions. Performance Line, Prestige, Ultra Prestige and La Premiere are the four versions available from launch, with prices starting at £30,990, for Performance Line, rising to £36,490 for La Premiere, both including the government grant. At first glance the E-Tense looks just like a standard DS3 Crossback, but if you look a little closer you’ll notice subtle differences. E-Tense features a Pearl Crystal paint finish, satinchrome finishes, E-Tense emblems and a special rear bumper, which is missing an exhaust pipe. It also comes with door handles which pop out when the car is unlocked, and LED matrix headlights Inside, the 10” landscape touchscreen is a highlight and the angular electric window switches set in the centre binnacle are also refreshingly different. The top and front of the dashboard are nicely finished in quality plastics but lower down, on the glovebox, centre storage arm rest and door pockets, the quality isn’t as high. It is fully loaded, equipment wise, however, with an electronic parking brake, electrically adjustable and folding door mirrors, keyless start, Hill Start Assist, automatic air conditioning and a Head Up Display. Connectivity wise, there’s Mirror Screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, DS Connect 30 | August 2020 | Company Car & Van

with 3D SatNav, DAB radio and for your mobile, Bluetooth and two front USB connections. The touchscreen works well but we still find it frustrating that you need to adjust the climate controls by touching the screen, rather than manually. Safety kit includes driver and front passenger lateral and curtain airbags with rear lateral and curtain airbags, City park and ESP. On-board storage comes in the form of front and rear door pockets, a front central armrest, a charging space for your phone and keys and a rear parcel shelf. The boot is identical in size to petrol and diesel versions, so you get 300 litres of space and 1,050 litres with the seats folded down. Front passengers get decent head and legroom, but the DS’s design cocoons you somewhat, almost wrapping itself around you if you’re sat up front. Rear passengers don’t fare quite as well, though. Two adults will fit in nicely but with a tall person sat in front of you, legroom is tight. Furthermore, while the design detail of the shark fin looks different it also reduces light, so the rear area does feel quite dark. The E-Tense rides on the same underpinnings as petrol and diesel versions of the DS 3 Crossback. In the EV version the 50kWh battery is mounted under the floor, sending drive to the front axle. With 260Nm torque; 0-62mph takes nine seconds and the top speed is 93mph. If you can find a suitable charging station, the DS 3 Crossback E-Tense can be recharged at 100kW and will go from zero to 80% full in 30

minutes. If you have a 7.2kWh home charger, then this will take a little longer, around five hours. The single phase 7kW on-board charger will be the standard offering for the UK market. Additionally, the car can be charged from a standard domestic socket, but it’s very, very slow and not recommended. One advantage of the EV version of the DS3 is that you can, via the MyDS smartphone app, remotely programme or activate recharging if the vehicle is plugged in and pre-condition the cabin temperature, based on the weather. We took the E-Tense out for a couple of hours to see how it drives. Our route took in city centre driving, 36 miles of motorway and some country lanes and B roads. The first thing you’ll notice is that it does feel heavy compared to it’s fossil-fuel brethren. But, as with the e-208, the extra 300kg of battery weight is in the floor of the car, so it doesn’t feel unbalanced. Indeed, someone new to EVs may not even notice this. And, similarly to the Peugeot EV, although it rides well on good and average surfaces, that extra weight means it tends to sink lower into ruts in the road and struggles over poor surfaces, which in turn send a few shudders into the cabin. Despite this grumble, the E-Tense is fitted with what is currently one of the best electric powertrains out there. In our first hour we drove in Eco mode. It offers just 80bhp but even on the motorway, this gave decent motorway cruising. At an average of 70mph the range does go down faster than if you were driving in town, so do bear that in mind. www.companycarandvan.co.uk

is 25 per cent of the cost of a petrol car and 20 per cent of the cost of a diesel car when it comes to cost per mile, or distance covered. To charge the E-Tense to full on a 7kWh charger from zero takes eight hours. We would recommend always charging to 80 per cent only, which take five hours and is better for the battery life as well. If this is tickling your fancy, we’d strongly suggest a 7kWh home charger so you can top up at your leisure. We have a Rolec 7kWh charger at the office and it really takes the hassle out of owning an electric vehicle. Drive, return, plug-in, repeat. And DS is offering a free six-month subscription to Polar Plus, so you can plug-in for free when you’re out and about. We headed out of the city and at motorway speeds the E-Tense is remarkably quiet, even for an EV. DS has introduced thicker door panels, thicker glass and has added an acoustic windscreen, none of which come with the fossil-fuel version. All you can hear is a little outside wind noise, courtesy of the large wing mirrors. On our return we had a play around with the Drive Selector, switching from Eco to Normal, which increases the power to 107bhp. Things do feel slightly different and there’s a bit more get up and go. Switch up to Sport mode and the full 134bhp is released and the car gets noticeably quicker and more agreeable, too. By shifting the gear selector backwards or forwards on the move you can harness brake

regeneration, which is also a useful addition. Most people reading this will want to know how we got on with range. When we collected the E-Tense, the mileage charge shown was 141 miles. We drove 47 miles and returned with a reading of 88 miles, which is pretty good considering 36 miles of our journey was on the motorway. For fleet managers and company car drivers alike, the really good news is the huge discounts running an electric car will bring. The DS3 Crossback E-Tense comes with a 2020/21 BIK of just 0% on all of the range. You also get the Government grant, currently £3,000, off the asking price, as the E-Tense qualifies in Category One for the subsidy. As a price comparison we reckon that an electric car

Verdict The DS3 Crossback E-Tense really does stand out, even above the ever-so-pretty Peugeot 208. Adding an electric version makes perfect sense, especially for fleet customers. The E-Tense range of 200 miles ends range anxiety, although if you want a 300-mile EV you’ll have to look at Korean rivals such as the KIA Soul and Hyundai Kona. For now, the DS3 Crossback E-Tense is a great addition to the burgeoning EV market.

Vivaro-e has range and load to keep multi-drop deliveries going • Up to 205-mile electric range* • No compromise on payload as 1,226kg just 130kgs less than diesel counterpart Built on the same line as the diesel-engined Vivaro, and available to order in two lengths and two body variants, the new battery electric Vauxhall Vivaro-e enables business users to benefit from uncompromised zero-emission, door-to-door mobility. Far from being a compromised ‘final-mile’ solution for delivery drivers, however, Vauxhall’s Vivaro-e has a range of 205 miles on the WLTP cycle, meaning that multi-drop deliveries around large towns and cities on a single charge will become a reality for British business users. While the Vivaro-e is as versatile and flexible as any other Vivaro, its payload of up to 1,226kgs is also comparable to that of similar LCVs with internal combustion engines. In fact, the load it can carry is only 130kgs less than a Vivaro fitted with a diesel engine. The Vivaro-e is also the only electrified vehicle in its segment that has the ability to pull trailers (with a maximum towing capacity of 1.0 tonne). Vivaro-e customers can choose between two sizes of lithium-ion battery, depending on their needs. A 75kWh unit provides up to 205 miles of range, while business users with smaller areas to cover in the working day can opt for a 50kWh battery with a range of up to 143 miles (both WLTP test cycle). With 100kW (136PS) and 260Nm of torque from the electric propulsion system, the Vivaro‑e offers better performance than most electric commercial vehicles. The electronically controlled maximum speed of 81mph means adhering to speed limits on UK motorways can be achieved with ease, while preserving the electric range. The battery located under the load compartment also lowers the centre of gravity, which benefits the cornering and stability of the Vivaro-e, even when it is fully laden. Electric mobility made easy The Vivaro-e is as easy to charge as it is to use. Via wall box, fast charging or even a cable for charging from a domestic plug socket if necessary, every Vivaro-e is ready for a variety of charging options. Using a 100kW DC public charging station, charging of the 50kWh battery to 80 per cent only takes 30 minutes – and 45 minutes for the 75 kWh battery. Depending on the distances a user drives on a daily basis and on the time left between usage phases to charge the battery, they will find the standard, single-phase 7.4kW on-board charger sufficient, or opt for the www.companycarandvan.co.uk

optional three-phase 11kW on-board charger. Both on-board chargers ensure that charging times are as fast as possible and that the battery (covered by an eight-year/100,000-mile guarantee) has a long life. With the VauxhallConnect e-remote control functions, customers can use their smartphones to check the battery’s state-ofcharge or programme air conditioning and charging times. In addition, the VauxhallConnect portfolio ranges from eCall and breakdown calls to numerous other services, such as vehicle status and information. LIVE Navigation also provides online traffic information in real time. An electric van for all tasks Vauxhall has tailored the Vivaro-e to cater for a variety of customer needs, with a panel van and double-cab being available for commercial applications, and a passenger vehicle to follow. The panel van has payloads of up to 1,226kg, with gross vehicle weights ranging up to 3,100kg. As most variants are about 1.90m tall, the Vivaro-e can access parking in basements or shopping centres with low roofs. Thanks to the practical FlexCargo loadthrough on the front passenger side, the cargo length can be extended by 1.2m. With this, L1H1 (4.96m long) and L2H1 (5.30m long) can securely store ladders, conduit or piping of up to 3.67 or 4.02m in length, while the multitude of storage areas in the cockpit (which features an electric parking brake) comfortably accommodate numerous smaller items. Flexcargo also increases maximum cargo capacities to 5.8 and 6.6m3 respectively. The Vivaro-e’s wide rear and sliding side doors give unrestricted access to the cargo

area or passenger compartment. Especially practical are the electric sliding side doors that open automatically – a movement of the foot is all it takes to open the doors from outside the vehicle. Full raft of assistance systems Like its siblings with internal combustion engines, the Vivaro-e offers an unusually wide range of driver assistance systems that enhance drivers’ safety. In addition to a Head Up Display, the Vivaro-e is available with Lane Keep Assist, Extended Traffic Sign Recognition, Drowsiness Alert, Semi-adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Alert and Automatic Emergency Braking. Ultrasonic sensors in the Vivaro-e’s front and rear aprons warn the driver of obstacles when parking and monitor the side blind spot. Depending on the equipment level, the 180 degrees rear-view camera image appears on the seven-inch touchscreen. The Multimedia Radio and Multimedia Navi Pro infotainment systems available in the Vivaro-e come with the large 7.0-inch touchscreen. Both feature phone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Multimedia Navi Pro additionally features European navigation with 3D view. The Vivaro-e continues not only Vauxhall’s electrification offensive, but also the Vivaro’s success story that began with the first generation in 2001. Ducato exudes confidence as it retains Europe’s top spot Andrew Walker With the growth of internet shopping – and my word, hasn’t that been the case over the past few months – the van market continues to thrive, as more customers have parcels delivered to their homes and places of work. With that growth has been a matching rise in van sales, particularly those ideal for the urban sector. And while a host of new electric vans are with us, sales are still dominated by new, clean diesels. The FCA Group was at the vanguard of this with its Fiat Professional Ducato, which has been updated for 2020. The best-selling Fiat Professional vehicle, the Ducato is now offered with a range of improved Euro6D engines, including a new 9-Speed automatic transmission with latest-generation torque converter. Fiat has also taken the opportunity to upgrade the safety and tech, adding advanced ADAS driving assist systems, the latest-generation infotainment system and they’ve also revised the exterior. Ducato has been the European market leader in its sector for the past five years, as well as the leading vehicle as a base for motorhomes in Europe, taking approximately three in every four motorhome sales.

The Ducato’s new range of MultiJet 2 engines come with a variable geometry compressor, which results in a smoother drive, increased flexibility at low speeds and improved fuel consumption, no matter which power output. The entry level Ducato produces 120hp from the 2.3-litre MultiJet 2 engine at 2,750rpm with a maximum torque of 320Nm at 1,400rpm. It is teamed with the manual gearbox, which improves power and torque delivery by 10 per cent compared to the previous 2.0-litre engine. The 140hp version offers 350Nm torque at just 1,400rpm and is offered with a choice of 6-speed manual gearbox or the new 9-speed automatic transmission. The 160hp variant reaches peak power output at 3,500rpm and distributes up to 400Nm torque at 1,500rpm in the automatic version. The range-topping engine boasts 180hp, with peak power coming in at 3,500rpm and 400Nm torque from 1,500 to 3,000rpm, with manual gearbox. Combined with the new 9-speed automatic transmission it produces 450Nm torque, 12 per cent more than the previous model placing it best-in-class in terms of torque in its category. The new nine-speed automatic transmission offers drivers a choice of three driving modes:

Normal, Eco and Power. There are two operating modes, Drive and Autostick. In Drive the control module automatically selects and shifts into gear according to the various driving conditions. In Autostick the driver can change gear manually. The Ducato MY20 also comes as standard with the new EcoPack, which includes Start and Stop, smart alternator and electronicallycontrolled fuel regulator. Improved safety features include blind spot assist, rear cross path detection, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, high beam recognition and a rain and dusk sensor. The infotainment system features a 7” touchscreen by Mopar®, USB port, DAB and SatNav, as well as integration for Apple CarPlay and Android AutoTM. We had the opportunity to spend some time driving a couple of the new models and came away impressed. First up we tackled a 140hp manual LWB version. On a route that took in city and country roads plus the motorway, this version proved very capable. With two passengers and a one-tonne load on board, this version is the most popular engine choice in the UK. Continued on page 36

Cleaner engines help Ducato deliver Continued from page 35 Despite the LWB dimensions, when we headed on to some rural B roads the Ducato handled with aplomb. The addition of Lane Departure Warning gives the driver a quiet nudge when the road narrows, or you are forced off line, but unlike in many cars and vans we’ve driven, it’s not intrusive. There’s also a reversing camera built into the 7” screen. The test took us on a pre-programmed circular 35km route, following the built-in SatNav. Of course, if needed, you can connect your phone via USB to utilise Google Maps, but the built-in SatNav worked just fine, even offering a reassuring beep when you take the correct exit off a roundabout. The interior has also been redesigned and our test model featured a clever notepad-cum iPad rest which can be lifted up to allow your tablet to rest on it. There’s a couple of decent sized glove boxes, two deep door pockets, storage on top of the dash, twin drinks holders in front of the centre passenger seat and two more storage areas, which are also located in front of the third passenger seat. The ratios in the six-speed manual gear box make changing up or down simple and the Ducato also benefits from a light clutch. All three pedals are easy to reach, with room to rest your foot on the motorway as well. The

steering wheel only adjusts up or down though. Next up was the more powerful 160hp unit, matched to the new nine-speed auto gear box. This offers a manual shift if you prefer. However, for stop/start driving, especially on the motorway, the automatic is a blessing and helps for a more relaxing drive than in the manual. The extra 20hp that’s on tap also gives the Ducato a bit more pull, especially at the top end. Where the 140hp version tends to fade after 2,000 revs, doing all of its work lower down, the 160hp version keeps pulling all the way up to 3,500rpm. The driving position in the Ducato is excellent, with a clear view of the road ahead and to left and to right, thanks to the large windows and windscreen. The driver’s seat adjusts fore and aft and up and down, so getting comfortable was easy. Whatever the standard of the cabin or the

drive, this is a load-lugger, and in this capacity the Ducato scores highly. The load area has a new and large LED light in the middle of the roof inside the loading area. The twin rear doors fold almost flat to the side of the van and there’s also a single sliding side door, both allowing better access to the rear of the van. Any negatives? The Ducato is now eight years old and while the upgrades won’t hurt, it’s still a pretty old vehicle by modern standards. Quality wise, the interior feels better than before but it does still feature some cheaplooking plastics in places, and while the tech has clearly improved, the 7” screen could do with being a touch larger. On the plus side, the seat fabric looks and feels hard wearing, and is very smart-looking. Prices for the diesel Ducato, start at £24,670 (excluding VAT).

The model offers an all-electric range of up to 82 miles with a cargo space of 6.7m3. Flexible charging options allow for 80 per cent charge in just 45 minutes. Performance and efficiency The ABT eTransporter 6.1 delivers a maximum power output of 110PS (83kW), with a 0-62mph time of just 17.4 seconds. The technically-advanced and lightweight electric motor provides smooth and quiet driving, low maintenance requirements and instant maximum torque. This is connected to the battery via the power electronics that supply energy to both the on-board electronics and the electric motor. The compact battery is fitted underneath the load area to avoid compromising the cargo area of 6.7m3 and payload of up to 1,001kg. Total range is up to 82 miles. The ABT eTransporter 6.1 is also fitted with regenerative braking, switching the drive motor to generator operation to recover energy lost when braking. The resulting current is fed back into the battery and stored for later use. The driver is able to see the battery status from the instrument cluster, where the usual rev counter dial has been replaced with a power meter. This can be done by using a wallbox, which will charge the lithium-ion battery in approximately five and a half hours. speeds and acceleration for the most economical driving, while the charge level indicator states the current charge in the battery. The ABT eTransporter 6.1 features a modified dual clutch transmission DSG, combining the conventional system with the requirements of an electric drive to develop sufficient power in any driving situation. When Drive (‘D’) is selected, the motor will deliver 75% power to maximise range, with the kickdown function on the gear shift providing 100% power and torque, maximising performance. Charging The Combined Charging System (CCS) socket on the new ABT eTransporter 6.1 provides a flexible charging solution, combining the ability to charge via both AC and DC. This means you can use any device that has either a CCS (DC charging) or Type 2 (AC charging) plug type. A Type 2 charging cable is included with the vehicle as standard. Rapid charging using a DC charger is the fastest way to charge your electric van. The new ABT eTransporter 6.1 supports up to 50kW DC charging using a CCS connector, which means the vehicle’s lithium-ion battery can achieve a charging state of 80 per cent within approximately 45 minutes. This is ideal for vans working a busy shift pattern which need to be on the road and working.

Technology The ABT eTransporter 6.1 is equipped as standard with a DAB+ radio system with 6.5-inch touchscreen and four loudspeakers, SD card slot, Bluetooth® handsfree and two USB interfaces (type-C) in the dashboard. Renault ready to help the UK’s businesses get moving again Andrew Walker talks to Stephen Whitcombe, Head of Renault Vans and PRO+, about how the Covid-19 lockdown affected its plans – and what we’ve still got to look forward to in 2020-2021

When you moved into your new role at the start of the year, I imagine that you were looking forward to the challenge of increasing volumes for Renault Pro+. How has the global pandemic affected Renault here in the UK and how well do you think the brand has coped with it? Stephen Whitcombe: We, like all businesses, were unavoidably affected by the global pandemic. We benefitted from being part of a global company and could learn from colleagues at Groupe Renault in territories hit before the UK. This allowed us to make informed and timely decisions to ensure the well-being of our staff and customers. Renault UK could also act quickly to ensure that charity partners were allocated extra vehicles (in particular, vans) to help under the increased pressure of the crisis; including Blood Bikes, The Mayor’s Fund and The Felix Project, the latter seeing unprecedented demand for food donations during lockdown. Dealerships were closed but we remained available for customers, especially our fleet teams who utilised new methods of communication to stay in touch with customers during this critical time, including setting up the

Renault “EV Café”, an interactive webinar space about EVs in general with guest expert speakers, including academics, business owners who have switched to EVs, and ancillary businesses who support the EV industry. We continue to have an excellent product offering, with a wide range of E-LCVs, of great interest to potential fleets and individual van buyers. Meanwhile, our Buy Now, Pay Later offer is an excellent incentive for van buyers looking to switch into a new vehicle with nothing to pay for the first three months. Before lockdown, the UK government was pushing future mobility, as electric cars and vans. You have the Kangoo and Master Z.E. models in the Renault van range. Will you be launching any new electric models, a Trafic Z.E. for example? SW: Renault has been a pioneer in the development of fully electric vehicles, selling in excess of 250,000 EV cars and vans since 2011. In the UK we are seeing significant growth in customer demand for electric vans – the electric van market increased by 190 per cent last year and Renault has outperformed this market growth with a 222 per cent growth

in sales volumes, achieving 31 per cent share of this growing market. Clearly, however, we are not resting on our laurels. We have strengthened our established Kangoo Z.E. range, with the addition of a new higher specification Business+ edition, and in response to customer demand we will be introducing 3.5T derivatives of Master Z.E. to compliment the current 3.1T range. These will include Chassis Cab and Platform Cab which will open a wealth of opportunities for Master Z.E. conversions. Our fully electric ZOE has enjoyed fantastic media and customer response since its launch. We are now bringing the same market-leading features – such as 52 kWh battery and a 245-mile WLTP range – to our van customers with the launch of an all-new ZOE Van. Trafic has been Europe’s best-selling van for a good few years now. In the face of increased competition, how will Renault maintain its market share in the challenging market beyond 2020? SW: Renault Trafic celebrates its 40th birthday this year and continues to be our top-selling van in the UK. In response to customer demand for greater personalisation and a sportier look we have launched the New Trafic Black Edition range available in both panel and crew vans. This van brings a host of visual enhancements including black alloy wheels and black sports styling alongside Automatic Climate Control to enhance driver and passenger comfort. It also features rear view parking cameras to make manoeuvring in tight spaces easier.

Kangoo Z.E. fits the bill for Southampton City The all-electric Renault Kangoo Z.E.33 is set to help Southampton City Council clean up in its drive to make the city a healthier, greener and more sustainable environment for present and future generations. The Council has taken delivery of 24 zero-emissions-in-use Renault Kangoo Z.E.33 Panel Vans, which will be used in the upkeep of the City and contribute to its goal of 90 per cent of its fleet to be zero40 | August 2020 | Company Car & Van

emission by 2030. The Z.E.33 vans were ordered after the award-winning light commercial was determined to be the best fit for its operational requirements by formal tender via the public sector framework. The order fully utilised the variety of the Renault Kangoo Z.E.33 range, including one Crew Van version and a mixture of standard Panel Van and longer Maxi Panel body styles.

The new vans replace existing diesel vans in the council’s fleet and will be used by a variety of essential services including neighbourhood wardens and waste operations teams. US returnee leads Mercedes-Benz sales Andrew Lawson has been named as Mercedes-Benz UK’s new sales director. Andrew (left) has a wealth of experience in the LCV sector, having worked for the three-pointed star for 15 years and, prior to this, for Citroen UK. During his assignment in America, Andrew was instrumental in the acquisition of many new clients to the brand, notably Amazon and US Postal Service, among others. As part of this new appointment to the Brand, Simon Neill will move from his current position as Sales Director to Customer Services Director, and will therefore succeed David Joyce, who moved over to the Mercedes-Benz Trucks UK business in February. Maxus adds a great new string to Steadplan’s bow It’s not been a bad couple of years for van brand LDV, with the LDV EV80 winning the Company Car & Van Electric Van of the Year in both 2019 and 2020. Not one to rest on their laurels, however, Chinese owners SAIC rebadged the brand as Maxus in June while simultaneously launching two new vans, the Deliver 9 and eDeliver 3, their all-new medium electric van. Watching this progress closely has been North of England-based MAN dealers Steadplan, a long established truck, moving floor and tipping trailer dealership with bases in

Leeds, Burnley and Rochdale. Managing Director James Smith and his team are specialists in conversions for both retail and fleet customers and in 2017 added the MAN TGE large van franchise to their portfolio. The new 100% electric version of Dispatch offers fleet and business users practical solutions to the challenges of mobility in urban environments – and in rural areas too thanks to the impressive operating range, which is sufficient for most journeys. ë-Dispatch makes it possible for all users to conduct their business in a new way, directly participating in energy transition. With no compromise in terms of performance and features – which have made Dispatch such a success – ë-Dispatch brings a new dimension in terms of comfort and greater peace-of-mind to all tradespeople: The operating range suitable for most daily tasks, with 143 miles on the WLTP cycle with a 50 kWh battery and 205 miles on the WLTP cycle with a 75 kWh battery. It is also more comfortable – with a freedom from vibration and noise, and remarkably smooth handling; and its is eminently drivable. Crucially for many urban operators, it gives owners freedom to access restricted low emission CO2 zones. All in all it builds a package that is less stress to own and drive – but without any compromise of load capacity, which remains unchanged on the combustion engine versions. Citroën expects to position ë-Dispatch at the top of the BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) market, with an offering that is highly adapted to the needs of fleet and business LCV customers. Totally integrated into the Dispatch range, ë-Dispatch is only visually different on the outside due to the charging port positioned on the left-hand front wing. Plus a blank section in the grille at the front, and a new “ë” badge fitted to the right of the grille and again on the left-hand rear door. Built on the Groupe PSA EMP2 multi-energy platform, this electric version of Dispatch is offered with two battery powertrains – giving two levels of vehicle range – allowing every operator to select the one that best suits their needs and budget: • 143 miles on the WLTP cycle (available with XS and M body styles) fitted with a 50 kWh battery, made up of 18 separate modules. • 205 miles on the WLTP cycle (available with M and XL body styles) fitted with a 75 kWh battery, made up of 27 individual modules. New ë-Dispatch offers all the advantages of the architecture from the existing internal combustion engine (ICE) versions. modularity, ergonomics, interior space, storage space and optimised loading capacity, making it an ideal work tool. ë-Dispatch is available in three lengths, including the XS model at 4.60m – designed for easier access to urban centres and for unfettered parking. This length, coupled with a volume of up to 5.1m3, makes for an extremely compact van. ë-Dispatch is just 1.90m tall, which means it can go where many competitors cannot, such as underground car parks and shopping centres, etc, but with payloads of up to 1,275kg it has the versatility you need. There are three charging modes available: Home charging, requiring a mode 2 cable (for charging at home, at a place of work or in a car park). Compatible with a standard domestic socket (cable available as an accessory). Private or public accelerated charging, needing a ‘Wallbox’ at home and a mode 3 cable. 32A cable (supplied as standard with the vehicle). In this format it charges from 0 to 100% in less than 8 hours (7.4 kW Wallbox). Super-fast charging at a mode 4 public charging point (cable incorporated into charger).Up to 100 kW. Can charge a 50 kWh battery to 80% in 30 minutes and a 75 kWh battery to 80% in 45 minutes. The warranty period for the battery is eight

years or 100,000 miles (up to 70% battery capacity). There are three options available: The lead-in X version, incorporating essential items such as an RD6 MP3 Bluetooth® Radio, electric and heated mirrors, and an electric parking brake. The Enterprise version – the most flexible model at the heart of the range – includes all equipment from the X version, with the addition of rear parking sensors, air-conditioning, alarm, automatic lights and wipers, 7-inch colour touchscreen with Apple CarPlay™/Android Auto, and the brand’s Moduwork® dual passenger bench with fold-up outer seat. The Driver version, made for mile-eaters, includes all equipment of the Enterprise version, plus additional front parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, a Visio Park 180° rear parking camera, 17-inch ‘Curve’ alloy wheels, Citroën Connect Navigation with voice recognition, and a Safety Pack (lane departure warning, speed limit recognition, intelligent speed adaptation, driver attention alert, smart beam headlights and Active Safety Brake). There’s no compromise on driver amenities, such as storage facility within the cabin. This is cleverly positioned all around the cabin, so that everything is in its place and there is no need to worry. A few examples: there is a net on the console with electric parking-brake (between the driver’s and passenger’s seats), the lower glovebox is fitted with a jack-plug and 12V sockets, there is a large storage bin under the passenger’s bench-seat and there are cup-holders on the dashboard. Overall, ë-Dispatch has nearly 100 litres of storage. Alonso with a rally raid-spec Toyota Gazoo Racing Hilux, tailormade for the 2020 Dakar Rally

New-look Hilux happy to tackle the Dakar with world-class driving star World champion driver Fernando Alonso had an early chance to experience the new Toyota Hilux, giving the latest version of the legendary pickup a rigorous test drive during his preparations for the 2020 Dakar Rally. Alonso and co-driver Marc Coma were able to push the new model to the limit, alongside normal driving duties in their rally raid-spec Toyota Gazoo Racing Hilux. The latest version of the “indestructible” Hilux is equipped with a new 2.8-litre powertrain and benefits from revised suspension geometry to maintain its reputation for world-class quality, durability and reliability. Following the test on a gravel and dirt special stage, Alonso said: “Hilux is an icon and I’ve always been a fan. It was good to test the new Hilux in a challenging environment and to push it to the limits. The new engine behaves well

and the new suspension feels great. Even when you push it, the comfort is still there.” The test was conducted in collaboration with the rally team in the spirit of Toyota Gazoo Racing’s core philosophy of helping make “ever-better cars.” Alonso and Coma brought exceptional experience to the task. Alonso is a two-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner and reigning FIA World Endurance Championship title holder with Toyota Gazoo Racing, two-time Formula 1 World Champion and winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona. He is returning to Formula 1 next season with Renault. Coma is a five-time Dakar Rally winner in the motorbike class and six-time FIM CrossCountry Rallies World Champion. Their first Dakar entry as a pairing resulted in a creditable 13th place finish earlier in 2020.
