PETER’S SIXTH FORM

WELCOME FROM THE HEAD TEACHER

Thank you for taking an interest in our Sixth Form. At St Peter’s School we know every student. Not only their name, their strengths and their interests, but also what they need to do to become successful adults in the future.

We encourage our Post-16 students to be positive role models for our younger students. From delivering assemblies on Macmillan Cancer Support to speaking to parents and prospective students, our sixth formers are able to demonstrate their maturity and desire to help others. Such leadership opportunities support students to develop the skills that industry wants – the confidence to speak to a variety of audiences, the ability to work effectively with different people and the willingness to take on responsibility. Taking part in such extra-curricular opportunities is important as a young person develops into a successful adult. At St Peter’s School there is an ever-growing range of activities for students to participate in.

The range of qualifications we offer allows students to move on to university, higher level apprenticeships and employment. Our students have a strong track record of securing places at prestigious universities or with high profile local employers. Being part of a Trust of schools has many strengths and we are proud to have been part of The Cam Academy Trust since 2016.

We have, for example, been able to deliver qualifications here at St Peter’s School, which are taught by staff from Comberton Sixth Form. This success has led to us broadening the range of qualifications that will be taught by teachers from the Comberton Sixth Form team.

Grades are important as they open opportunities for a student for the rest of their lives. Grades are not the only focus for St Peter’s School as we believe that, in order for a student to achieve the highest possible grades, they must be cared for and valued as an individual. To provide the best quality pastoral care our staff have been carefully trained in the needs of post 16 students. We, as a school, work with a wide variety of organisations who give students, staff and parents specialist advice and guidance.

Students choose to come to St Peter’s Sixth Form because they are confident that they will achieve success. As a result of the positive relationships between students and staff, good quality teaching, and support and guidance, our Post-16 students achieve examination results that demonstrate they have made excellent progress at St Peter’s School.

If you have any questions, then please do not hesitate to contact the Sixth Form team.

THE SIXTH FORM STUDENT LEADERSHIP TEAM

When looking at where you want to go to continue your education, there are many aspects you need to consider. These include the quality of teaching, support from staff and the extra-curricular opportunities which are available. The access to new opportunities enhance the Sixth Form experience whether that is supporting younger students and doing voluntary work, to completing programmes like Duke of Edinburgh, Mental Health Training and work experience.

After looking at various Post-16 options, we are proud to be students at St Peter’s as we feel supported in our studies both academically and personally. The sixth form team enable us to enjoy coming to school, while helping us attain highly. Also, the relatively small size of our Sixth Form means that students and teachers are able to build good relationships with each other, and students are able to receive one-toone support from their subject teachers.

With a wide variety of subjects to choose from, students leave at the end of Year 13 with the knowledge and understanding needed for their higher education. The career advisors within the school allow students to receive information to help progress on to their future careers. This progression is monitored on a regular basis throughout our time in sixth form with support always available from staff.

We are really happy at St Peter’s Sixth Form and think that you will be too. The real sense of community and friendship means that we are excited to come to school every day. We know that whenever there is a problem, all staff will be happy to help and will ensure that our time here is both enjoyable and worthwhile. We wish you the best of luck in your Sixth Form application and we look forward to welcoming you to St Peter’s Sixth Form.

SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES

We pride ourselves on the guidance that we offer all students in the Sixth Form, whether it is linked to progress, welfare or careers.

The Student Support Manager and the Head of Sixth Form liaise with teachers and monitor students’ progress on every step of their journey. The transition from GCSE to A level can sometimes be challenging, and we therefore believe that communication between staff, students and parents is vital.

In addition to the Sixth Form team, students also have access to Amber Walker, the school’s Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) officer, who is always on hand to help with CVs, applications for apprenticeships and jobs, and advice about future career intentions.

WHAT WE DO TO ENABLE SIXTH FORM STUDENTS ACHIEVE THEIR POTENTIAL:

Nurture talent and encourage individuality

Provide one-to-one support

careers advice

Give assistance at every stage of the university entrance procedure

“We receive quality academic support both inside and outside of the classroom.”

Giving students the opportunity to take part in activities outside their timetabled lessons enables them to further develop their skills and knowledge, and helps to set their university and job applications apart from others. In an environment where everybody is competing for a limited number of university places and apprenticeships, having the chance to take part in additional activities, like the range we offer, is vital. We are very pleased to be able to offer the following enrichment activities to students in the Sixth Form:

Edinburgh

Going to St Peter’s Sixth Form was a great experience for me. It helped me to grow and achieve things younger me would never have thought was capable of. My time at St Peter’s Sixth Form gave me the most amazing memories and helped me make some of my best friends who will stay with me even though our time at St Peter’s is finished.

During my time at St Peter’s Sixth Form, I feel progressed not only in my education, but as a person too. This is down to the phenomenal support I received which enabled me to achieve the best I possibly could and attend a top university. The teachers were always on hand when I wanted to ask a question (or several), they gave endless words of encouragement, and put just as much effort into my development as I did myself. It really is such a positive place to complete A-Levels with every student experiencing a more personalised education.

DAWID KANIA former head boy Apprenticeship with Ensors

I didn’t know exactly what I would like to do after my GCSE year, however, I can honestly say this was the best decision I could have made. I have significantly developed both academically and personally throughout my experience at St. Peter’s School Sixth Form. I’ve grown as an individual to become the kind of person and professional I want to be in life. This is all because I decided to stay and make some great memories with a fantastic year group. I was never academically amazing at any subject. But I was lucky enough to be with the right teachers and in the perfect environment to learn, aspire and exceed. But most importantly, I have enjoyed every minute of it. From the lessons to events, or the trips, will forever be grateful to the school as it has made me who I am today.

I went to St. Peters for 7 years and through all the stresses of exams and any difficulties I had, I always felt that I had people to go to. I was lucky enough to have my chemistry lessons one to one and although at first, I was worried it would be ‘awkward’, the teachers who taught me ended up being some of my first points of call when I needed support or advice. I also was part of the afterschool club Maths Clinic where I knew if I needed help with my learning could stay and ask any of the maths department for support and they would be right there when I was struggling. A massive help I received during my time at sixth form was from the Sixth Form team; there are times in my A levels where I was so overwhelmed with everything going on and knowing I could walk into their offices and get the help and support I needed made my experience at sixth form enjoyable.
