Asking someone how they are Here are three ways of asking this question: Ça va? To use with a friend or someone you know very well Comment ça va? To use with a young person you don’t know well Comment allez-vous? To use with an adult who isn’t a close friend

Using verbs (doing words) Learning to use French verbs is very important. Regular verbs follow patterns you can learn to use (see page 130). Those that don’t follow these patterns are called irregular verbs. To talk about how you are feeling you can use the verb être (to be). It’s an irregular verb.

1

Look at how it works: je suis I am il est he is

Pronunciation The cedilla mark under the letter ‘c’ (ç) before the letters ‘a’, ‘o’ and ‘u’ makes it sound like the letter ‘s’. The letter ‘c’ always sounds like the letter ‘s’ in front of the letters ‘e’ and ‘i’. Listen to the sound of the letter é, for example in the word fatigué.

In French, the spelling of an adjective often changes depending on the person or thing it is describing. For example, many have an extra ‘e’ at the end to show that they are describing a girl or woman.

Écoute, écris la bonne lettre (a–f) et dessine le bon symbole. Listen, write the correct letter and draw the correct symbol.

3.1 Un régime sain et équilibré

Objectifs • Describe meal routines • Identify reasons to eat healthily • Use partitive articles and adverbs accurately

Sylvain

Verbs The Imperative The imperative is the form of the verb used to give commands or orders. It can be used politely, as in English ‘Shut the door, please’. In positive commands, the imperative forms for Vd, Vds and nosotros are the same as the subjunctive. The other forms are as follows: tú (same as 3rd person singular present indicative) vosotros (final -r of infinitive changes to -d) î (tú) habla speak (Vd) hable speak (nosotros) hablemos let’s speak (vosotros) hablad speak (Vds) hablen speak

come eat coma eat comamos let’s eat comed eat coman eat

vive live viva live vivamos let’s live vivid live vivan live

In negative commands, all the imperative forms are exactly the same as the present subjunctive. The imperative of irregular verbs is given in the verb tables, pages 82 to 160. Position of object pronouns with the imperative: • in positive commands: they follow the verb and are attached to it. An accent is needed to show the correct position for stress (see page 296) î • in negative commands: they precede the verb and are not attached to it î For the order of object pronouns, see page 236.

L'expression back benches désigne l'ensemble des backbenchers, toutes appartenances confondues.
