Antigua lies about 1,400 miles from Miami, 2,100 miles from Toronto and 4,000 miles from London. Wherever you’re travelling from, you can expect the warmest of welcomes at our international airport, our bustling cruise terminal and our scenic harbours...

AIRPORT
Our state-of-the-art terminal at V.C. Bird International Airport was rebuilt in 2015 and now boasts more space, improved facilities and speedier processing times for both arrivals and departures. The airport is certainly one of the most advanced in the Caribbean with self-service check-in kiosks and a relaxing Executive Lounge, as well as a variety of dining and duty-free shopping opportunities. The runway stretches 3,040 metres and not only welcomes the largest commercial aircraft, but also private jets serviced by a prominent FBO (Fixed Base Operator). Located just four miles from the capital St. John’s, the airport was named after the island’s first Prime Minister, Sir Vere Cornwall Bird Senior.
AIRLINES
Antigua continues to be serviced by a large number of international airlines. Flying in from North America are American Airlines, Delta, JetBlue Airlines, United Airlines, Air Canada, Sunwing and WestJet. Those with direct air links from Europe include British Airways and Virgin Atlantic from London's Heathrow and Gatwick. Serving the larger regional territories are Silver Airways, Air Antilles, Caribbean Airlines, LIAT and interCaribbean Airways, while SVG Air, WinAir, Fly Montserrat, Tradewinds Air and Sky High Aviation offer regional flights. Chartered inter-island airport transfers are also available through Antigua-based CalvinAir Helicopters.
TAXI FARES
Antigua's taxi fares are fixed, not metered. A one-way fare (for 1 to 2 persons in a shared taxi bus) from the airport to nearby St. John’s is about US$15 (EC$40), while a trip to Nelson’s Dockyard in the south of the island is about US$35 (EC$95).
DRIVE ON THE LEFT
Should you wish to pick up a car on arrival at the airport rather than at your hotel, car rental agencies can be found on exiting Customs. To be issued with a local licence (valid for 90 days), you’ll have to present your current valid driver’s licence and pay US$20 (EC$50). Driving is British-style with cars staying on the left. Take extra care at night as you’ll probably encounter speed-bumps, as well as goats on the road. You may even come across other drivers forgetting to dim their headlights! It's advisable to reserve a car in advance, especially during the peak winter months and during Sailing Week in April.
LOCAL CURRENCY
Antigua’s local currency is the Eastern Caribbean (EC) dollar but US dollars are widely accepted – the exchange rate of US$1 = EC$2.70 is general knowledge to all. Credit cards are also widely accepted but if you need cash, the airport has a bureau of exchange and ATMs. The Eastern Caribbean Amalgamated Bank lies just outside the entrance. Banks in St. John's include ECAB, ACB, CUB, First Caribbean and Global Bank.
CRUISE SHIPS
The world’s biggest and best cruise ships regularly visit Antigua. Up to 5 mega-ships can dock in St. John's at the same time, a tender service also available. Access to the city is easy as the port's exit gates lie about 500 feet (150 meters) from the ships' gangways. The bars, restaurants, duty-free shops and local boutiques of Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay are just a brief stroll away on flat terrain, the Boardwalk and King's casinos also waiting. Taxis are readily available if you're not booked on an organised tour and prefer to explore our historical and scenic delights at your own pace.
PRIVATE YACHTS
Many visitors arrive here by yacht, the four main ports of entry being English Harbour, Jolly Harbour, Heritage Quay, and St. John’s Deep Water Harbour. You should complete the eSeaClear pre-arrival notification online, but if you don’t have computer access, forms and computer terminals are available at the ports of entry. You must fly a yellow Q (quarantine flag), and everyone but the master must stay on board until the entry procedures have been completed. A cruising permit is required to cruise our waters, and those of you leaving your vessel in Antigua must have a valid airline ticket to another country. We look forward to welcoming you!

WHAT'S HAPPENING? From record-breaking rowers and history-making astronauts to another new top-notch hotel, Antigua continues to reach for the stars...
SPACED OUT Visitors enjoying a leisurely day-sail along our scenic north coast could be forgiven for thinking they’d had one rum punch too many. But no, the ‘Boonji Spaceman’ has landed in Antigua, the multi-hued sculpture gracing the end of Hodges Bay pier and proudly encouraging everyone to reach for the stars and dance while doing it!

Standing 22 feet high, the sculpture is the tallest of its kind in the Caribbean, its glistening chrome finish reflecting spectacular hues from sunrise to sunset. The artwork was created by the world-renowned American artist Brendan Murphy whose work is found in private collections and public displays around the world.
A FIRST FOR ANTIGUA Talk about girl power! When Christal Clashing, Samara Emmanuel and Kevinia Francis crossed the finishing line of the Pacific Challenge 2023, the adventurous trio hadn’t just rowed from California to Hawaii in 41 days (the average crossing time is 62), but they were the first black female team and the first Caribbean team to ever do so. The girls had to battle hard throughout the 2,800-mile course, never more so than over the final 50 miles when rain, squalls and strong currents threatened to blow them off-course. Music from soca to gospel helped them on their way, as did the support they received from all around the world.

ANTIGUA ASTRONAUTS When Virgin Galactic was established two decades ago with the goal of making space travel accessible to everyone, little did Keisha Schahaff imagine it would apply to her. But having won a philanthropic fundraising draw last year, she and her daughter Anastasia Mayer could hardly wait for lift-off. And when the rocket finally blasted off from New Mexico in August 2023, they weren’t just making history for the Caribbean, but they were also the first mother and daughter to go into space. The Antiguan duo experienced five minutes of weightlessness at 55 miles above sea level, Prime Minister Gaston Browne joining thousands of other people to witness and celebrate the extraordinary event.
RUM IN THE RUINS If history lectures can sometimes be a little dry for your taste, why not give ‘Rum in the Ruins’ a shot? Not only do the vessels range from high-performance racing yachts to cruisers and wing foils, you can join in the nautical fun whether you’re a member of a highly-trained crew or an amateur family sailor with little experience. Or if the idea of an active vacation piques your interest, why not ‘Rock up and Race’? Simply browse the websites of one of our reputable yacht charter companies and choose from a skippered race-charter, a bareboat or an individual place. Spectators are encouraged to get involved too. They can watch the action from bird’s eye vantage point along our coastline including our panoramic hiking trails and Shirley Heights Lookout. Daily ‘Chase the Race’ tours also head out from Falmouth Harbour and are a great way of viewing the on-the-water battles up close. Antigua Sailing Week has also long been famous for its beach parties and shoreside entertainment including Lay Day, the daily Prize Giving Events, and the Final Awards Ceremony. On Tuesday, 30th April, visitors are invited to the Reggae In the Park concert which is now in its 13th year. Previous reggae artists have included The Marley’s, Third World and Maxi Priest, and the event organisers guarantee that when racing crew, sailing enthusiasts, holidaymakers and locals come together in 2024, they will have an unforgettable night.

ANTIGUA CLASSIC YACHT REGATTA 17 to 22 APRIL, 2024
Each year an impressive collection of classic yachts and passionate sailors gather in Antigua from all over the world to take part in ‘Classics’ and to enjoy racing in the ideal trade wind sailing conditions of the Caribbean. This unique, world-class event attracts a variety of competitors from the mighty tall ships, vintage yachts, magnificent schooners and traditional island craft. Some of the yachts date back to the early 1900s, whereas others are modern-day reproductions classed as ‘Spirit of Tradition’.
The regatta closes on Monday 22nd April with the single-handed race, gig rowing races, cream teas on the lawn of the Admiral’s Inn and prize-giving ceremony. After racing each day, the yachts return to dock in the historic 18th century UNESCO World Heritage Site of Nelson’s Dockyard to take part in the shoreside events. After the last race on the Sunday, the yachts pass through the dockyard for the ‘Parade of Classics’ which is a wonderful opportunity to see the boats in all their glory and crews close up.

The Regatta traditionally starts with the Concours d’Elégance when the condition and maintenance of the yachts are judged. The full fleet then enjoys four days of racing with courses designed to take the best advantage of wind, sea, scenery and skill. Spectators can view the action from high points along the south coast like Fort Charlotte, Shirley Heights and Block House.

ROYAL OCEAN RACING CLUB RORC Nelson’s Cup Series: 13-16 February, 2024 • RORC Caribbean 600: 19 February, 2024 The RORC Caribbean 600 is a unique annual race that will celebrate its 15th year in 2024. It is organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC), a London and Cowes-based club with a worldwide reputation for the management of offshore races. Since its inception in 2009, the RORC Caribbean 600 has earned recognition as one of the world’s classic offshore races. It’s a firm fixture on the international racing calendar, as well as on the bucket list of any serious offshore sailor. Starting and finishing in Antigua, the unique 600-mile course uses eleven Eastern Caribbean islands as turning marks, providing an interesting challenge for both navigators and crew. With such a long racing course, the finishing times can vary by days. The RORC work with Falmouth-based Antigua Yacht Club, their army of local volunteers ably supporting the management of this great event. Every yacht to finish the race is met with a welcoming cold beer — much appreciated after the 600 nautical-mile challenge.

VALENTINE’S REGATTA 9-11th February, 2024
This annual regatta is a professionally run yet fun event featuring three days of competition off the west coast of Antigua. The schedule includes 7 races for yachts and sport boats. The quality is exceptional, and enjoyed by a growing fleet of vessels. www.jhycantigua.com

The last event attracted 70 teams with 600 sailors from 30 countries. The 2024 Nelson’s Cup Series will follow the same format as the inaugural edition in 2023. It will provide a competitive mix of inshore and coastal racing before the challenges of the classic RORC Caribbean 600. The series is expected to consist of: • 13-14 February: Two days of inshore racing. • 16 February: Antigua 360 Race. • 19 February: RORC Caribbean 600. The RORC Caribbean 600 and Nelson’s Cup Series attract professional and enthusiastic Corinthian sailors from around the world. SUPER YACHT CHALLENGE 11-17 March, 2024
Up to 15 superyachts (80 ft. and over) enjoy a celebration of sailing solely for the pleasure of owners, guests and crew. The fleet takes part in 4 days of racing governed by the International Superyacht Rule, with pursuit races along the south coast. The Challenge is competitive but fun, particularly ashore where everyone enjoys a relaxed atmosphere free from commercial endorsements. SPORTS FISHING TOURNAMENTS
Antigua's waters teem with fish – wahoo, marlin, tuna and mahi mahi can all be caught. Yet there’s nothing like landing ‘the big one’ when it matters, and Antigua now hosts 3 annual fishing tournaments. The season starts with the 'Sports Fishing Tournament' held this year between 16 and 19 May. More than 30 teams have been known to take to the seas, a 148lb yellowfin tuna the largest fish to be caught back in 2019. The fishermen leave early, and are greeted on their return by spectators eager to view and maybe even sample the day’s catch. Another opportunity to enjoy fresh fish shortly after it returns to dry land is 'The Francis Nunes Jr. Memorial Sports Fishing Tournament & Seafood Festival'. Set for 27 & 28 September, 2024, this event is in honour of the tournament’s past chairman, and you can test your luck on the water, take part in a ‘Cook-Off’ or enjoy the local dishes on offer at Nelson's Dockyard. u THE WORLD'S TOUGHEST ROW Starts December and ends 3,000 miles later! Formally the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, this trans-Atlantic rowing race begins in La Gomera in the Canary Islands, Spain and ends between 30 and 90 days later in English Harbour, Antigua. Between 40 and 50 courageous teams row 24 hours a day (two hours on, two hours off) until they reach dry land roughly 3,000 nautical miles later. The competitors face 40-foot waves, tropical storms, sleep deprivation, weight loss and sweltering heat, as well as the considerable challenges of working in a restricted space and turbulent natural environment. Participants hail from around the world and all walks of life, but what they do have in common is a sense of adventure and a desire to achieve something incredible. Each person raises money for a charity of their choice. Antiguans have long embraced this inspiring event and give each team a fantastic welcome when they finally arrive in Nelson’s Dockyard.
In 2015, Team Wadadli became the first Antiguan team to participate, breaking the record for the world’s oldest crew to row across any ocean. In 2017, Team Antigua proudly finished second and in 2019, Team Antigua Island Girls rowed home to a spectacular welcome. Team Antigua Pairs, Travis Weste and Jojo Nunes, were Antigua’s first duo in the 2020 challenge. And as the organisers signed a 5-year deal with the Antigua & Barbuda government in 2019, it looks like this unique competition will be returning to Antigua for years to come. NESTING TURTLES JUNE TO OCTOBER
You may be lucky to spot a turtle during the nesting season between June and October. They usually nest on one of our offshore islands, but they can be seen on the mainland too. Sights can include anything from hatching baby turtles to witnessing a mother laying her eggs. Do not disturb them, of course. The Environmental Awareness Group (EAG) is a voluntary organisation that patrols the beaches collecting interesting data. Did you know a warmer incubation temperature makes the turtle female, for example? Or that 'Teeny M' is the name of the monitored resident turtle of the National Park waters?

People of all ages show up to enjoy the colourful and dynamic kite flying displays at Devil's Bridge on our east coast. This annual summer event is a fun-filled celebration of Antigua's delicious pineapples and mangos. And why not? We are known to have the sweetest pineapple in the world, as well as over 26 varieties of mangoes. Enjoy the unique sounds of pan at this festival hosted by Gemonites Steel Orchestra. Steelbands are traditionally made up of old pieces of metal like irons, tyre rims and steel pipes. Yet Caribbean steel pans have evolved into highly technical instruments, honed out of steel drums, sunken and burned over hot fires, and then chromed and turned. This festival at the Dean William Lake Cultural Centre gives individuals, especially the young, the opportunity to showcase their talent in performances demonstrating all genres of music. Classical, gospel, reggae, jazz and calypso are all covered. A key component is the ‘Twenty Five A-Side’ competition which allows competitors to portray a creative and often comedic presentation. Musical storylines are brought to life to evoke laughter and excitement as the crowd responds. Several regional and international steel orchestras enter the competition hoping to win the coveted title.

Now in its seventh year, Run in Paradise continues to go from strength to strength. Yet the organisers refuse to rest on their laurels, and 2024 promises to be bigger than ever. This year’s event will feature a Half Marathon (13 miles), a 10K (6 miles) and a 5K (3.1 miles) and, as is tradition, all the races will culminate in medals, refreshments and swims at beautiful Fort James Beach. Runners throughout Antigua and the Caribbean participated in 2023. A group called REGGAE RUNNERS from the USA also took part and was so impressed with the conditions that they plan to return with about 200 other hopefuls. The event is organised to meet all international standards, with water stations every mile and the emergency services in attendance.

Often described as 'the Caribbean's greatest summer festival', this event showcases all aspects of carnival including pageantry, mas and steel pan music. We do hope you'll join in all the fun between 25 July and 6 August, 2024... This annual celebration of emancipation is now a two-week summer festival. It takes place in the capital city of St. John's, as well as at Carnival City in the Antigua Recreation Ground. The festival climaxes on Emancipation Day, starting with (4am) J'ouvert Morning when people take to the streets to dance to the local jam bands, steel bands and iron bands often dressed in colourful and exotic outfits. This is the true meaning of freedom – Emancipation! The great carnivals of the world are judged primarily on their music and mas. Carnival Monday and Tuesday always fall on the first Monday and Tuesday in August. On these two days the carnival troupes descend on the streets of St. John's adorned in their colourful costumes and dancing to the pumping soca rhythms and pulsating music of popular DJs. Carnival mas costumes depict colourful and magical themes often with national or regional significance. Their beading, feathers and jewels represent months of work in the various mas camps where the costumes are handmade. Mas makers often work into the early hours to produce hundreds of costumes in the hope of winning the coveted title of 'Band of the Year'.
The 'Carnival Queen Show' is always eagerly anticipated. To win this coveted title, young ladies are judged on their poise, performing talent and interview skills. 'Teen Splash' is a highlycompetitive talent competition for teens. Carnival City is bursting with youngsters on this night. No Carnival festival would be complete without a 'Panorama' competition. The rivalry that exists between the various steel orchestras fuels their passion to practise musical renditions for months in advance of the competition. This hard work and dedication is evident on 'Panorama Night' when the steel orchestras grace the stage at Carnival City with high-energy performances often punctuated with dramatic antics. The audience is always captivated. Carnival ends with 'Last Lap' on Carnival Tuesday where the jam bands wind their way through the streets of St. John's pumping out the most popular songs of the carnival season. It’s easy to get married in Antigua. Here’s all you need to know about the legal procedures and costs... • First go to the Ministry of Legal Affairs on Queen Elizabeth Highway in St. John’s. Take both your passports, as well as your divorce papers, if relevant. There’ll be a friendly interview between 9am and 12 noon, before your licence is issued. Cost EC$405.00 (US$150.00).
The hotels also make it as easy as possible. Their wedding packages generally include legal fees, a wedding arch, bottle of champagne, cake, bouquet of tropical flowers, buttonhole for the groom and the services of a wedding planner. Special group deals make it easy for family and friends to join you.
• Next you must pay the necessary legal costs at the Registrar General’s office. This is in the old Treasury Building at the top of High Street in St. John’s. The fee for registering at the Court House is EC$100.00 (US$40.00). The marriage certificate is EC$25.00 (US$10.00). The Marriage Officers fee for performing a wedding outside the Court House is EC$675.00 (US$250.00).
And let’s not forget you can even get married in one of our quaint island churches provided you allow extra time and fulfill certain formalities. These include getting permission from the church and sometimes attending pre-nuptial consultations.

SUGAR MILLS
These are dotted about the landscape, mostly in ruins but some with their solid outside structures still intact. By 1705 most of Antigua was planted with sugarcane, and 170 mills were built for crushing the cane. At that time each factory could produce 55 tons of sugar a year. Nowadays, there are a few carefully-restored mills often incorporated into more modern developments. Those at Harmony Hall, Mill Reef, Galley Bay and Weatherills Hotel certainly contribute a unique feature to each property.
BETTY’S HOPE
This imposing building, visible from all over St. John’s, was originally constructed in 1683, replaced in 1745 and totally rebuilt of stone in 1843 after an earthquake. The interior is completely cased in pitch-pine and there are interesting memorial stones. Restoration continues.
MUSEUM OF ANTIGUA & BARBUDA
The oldest building in St. John’s, the Georgian-style stone courthouse of 1750 has been the museum’s home since 1986. Today it interprets the rich history of our twin-island nation through interactive displays and installed exhibits. Discover the history of the Arawaks and Caribs, our earliest settlers. Follow the stories of the pioneers of the first towns, sugar and slavery, emancipation, and post-emancipation Antigua. In the courtyard display is ‘Bessie’, the 1917 Simplex WW1 Armour locomotive, the only one in the world and once used to haul sugarcane. Open Mon to Fri 8:30am to 2pm. Entry fee: EC$8.00/US$3.00. SATURDAY FOOD STALLS
Every Saturday food stalls pop up along our roadsides. These may be your best opportunity to get a taste of traditional Antiguan dishes like conch water, goat water (delicious stews), blood pudding, salt fish and ducana, and charcoal-grilled chicken and ribs. Betty’s Hope was granted to Christopher Codrington in 1674 and remained in the family for over 250 years. The ruins are located in the centre of Antigua and evoke the atmosphere of times past. Betty’s Hope had a labour force trained as craftsmen. There are twin sugar mill towers and one has been restored. An Interpretation Centre guides you through the history and life of the estate. ST. JOHN’S PUBLIC MARKET
This bustling, covered market at the edge of St. John’s is where to stop off for the freshest Caribbean fruit and vegetables. Upstairs are small boutique-style shops specialising in local souvenirs. The market is easily identified by the imposing sculpture of V.C. Bird, the Founder of the Nation, which lies at the intersection of all the roads leading to the market.

Built by the British to guard against invasion during the 18th century, Antigua’s forts are located all around our indented coastline. Fort James ‘protects’ St. John’s Harbour, charming local restaurants like BeachLimerZ nestled at its base. Fort Barrington overlooks Deep Bay, while Fort Berkeley is at Nelson’s Dockyard. If you take a walk up to these immense fortifications, some of which still have their original cannons, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of the neighbouring islands.
PARHAM
This quaint and historic little town was Antigua’s earliest British settlement. And Parham is still notable today for St. Peter’s, a spectacular church once described as ‘the finest church in the British West Indies’. It was built in the 1840s after the original wooden church was burnt down. It’s a beautiful and unusual octagonal shape designed by a famous architect of the time, Thomas Weekes. The church indicates the long-ago importance of Parham.
DEVIL’S BRIDGE
Situated at Indian Town close to The Hammock Cove Resort & Spa, this spectacular natural bridge at the head of Indian Creek has blow-holes and spouting surf. Legend says that if you throw two eggs into the water to boil, the devil (who is said to be down there) would keep one and return the other!

Built among the ruins in the Nelson’s Dockyard National Park, the Interpretation Centre provides an historic overview of Antigua’s past. ‘Reflections of the Sun’, a fascinating multi-media presentation, is a ‘journey through the dreamy corridors of six periods of the island’s history’.

PILLARS OF HERCULES
Best viewed by boat, the aptly-named and intriguing Pillars of Hercules are natural limestone rock formations that guard the entrance to Freeman’s Bay and English Harbour. Formed by the elements many millennia ago, they are also a popular snorkelling and diving site. Stingrays and trumpet fish are regular visitors to the coral reef extending far beneath the waves.
FIG TREE DRIVE
One of the best drives in Antigua, ‘fig’ may be the Antiguan name for banana, but this winding road is lined with all sorts of tropical fruit trees – guavas, mangoes, oranges and coconuts. It’s the major road branching off the main north/south highway opposite the pink Catholic church outside Liberta. This area of rainforest is something like the Garden of Eden. Go slowly until you descend into Old Road, passing Carlisle Bay and Curtain Bluff, and getting a glimpse of the pineapple farm.
The Antigua & Barbuda Humane Society provides shelter for over 150 donkeys at its Bethseda sanctuary. Here the neglected, roaming donkeys find a safe haven and receive food, water, shelter, medical care and love. The Humane Society offers an ‘Adopt a Donkey’ programme which includes a photo and an adoption certificate. We really encourage you to visit Antigua’s Donkey Sanctuary, and learn for yourself that there’s far more to a donkey than you thought. Admission is free but donations are greatly appreciated. NELSON’S DOCKYARD A UNESCO World Heritage Site Nelson’s Dockyard at English Harbour is our most prized possession and a must-see for any visitor. Named after the naval admiral Horatio Nelson, the Dockyard and its fortifications are a monument to the past, as well as a magnet for yachting and cultural activities year-round...

As the only continuously working Georgian naval dockyard in the world, Nelson’s Dockyard’s modern facilities make it a haven for anything from traditional sailboats to ultra-luxurious superyachts. The lovinglyrestored buildings of the National Park house charming restaurants, boutiques and inns, as well as the Dockyard Museum, a longstanding favourite with international visitors.

English Harbour was originally established to provide the British Royal Navy with a shipyard where they could keep their vessels in good repair and maintain their ascendency in the Caribbean against other European powers. It was as far back as 1671 that the Governor of the Leeward Islands first wrote about the harbour’s advantages to the Council for Foreign Plantations in London. Christopher Columbus himself never actually moored in Antigua, content to see it from a distance and naming it after the church of Santa Maria de la Antigua in Spain.

They were named after General Sir Thomas Shirley who arrived on the island in 1781 as Governor. The extensive network of buildings was constructed out of local stone along with brick imported as ballast for the ships coming from England. The military complex includes an obelisk in the cemetery commemorating the officers and men of the 54th Regiment (2nd Battalion Dorsets) who died in service in the West Indies between 1840 and 1851. England’s most famous naval hero, Admiral Horatio Nelson, spent his formative years in Antigua. Arriving at the age of 26 as Senior Captain and Second-inCommand of the Leeward Islands Station, he was in command of the frigate ‘Boreas’ and headquartered in English Harbour. By the time he left for England and greater glory in 1787, he had married a widow by the name of Frances Nesbit from Nevis.

Thanks to the location and facilities of Nelson’s Dockyard, Antigua was never conquered by any other European powers. Wharves, powder magazines, cisterns and storehouses were constructed, and the British ships could be careened (turned on their sides for repair) and overhauled here, safe from hurricanes. It was also the ideal port to protect the fleet in troubled times, the enclosed harbour of Freeman’s Bay almost invisible from the open waters. The narrow entrance to the harbour was protected by Fort Berkeley, constructed on the peninsula above the Dockyard and completed in 1744. The great fortifications of Shirley Heights ensured the invincibility of Antigua.

The National Parks Authority (NPA) is active in main-taining public awareness of the park’s history and heritage. Ongoing archaeological excavations often reveal relics of its rich multi-cultural, multi-ethnic past. The latest jewel in the park’s crown is Clarence House, named after Prince William Henry, the Duke of Clarence when he was in command of the ‘Pegasus’ in 1787. Regally set on the hillside opposite the Dockyard, this Georgian-era residence has now been restored to its former glory. Visitors can re-live the elegance of an 18th century mansion that has played host to dignitaries and royalty for 200 years. Her Royal Highness, Princess Margaret, actually honeymooned here. Nelson’s Dockyard National Park offers a wealth of unique and exciting opportunities for all its visitors. You can experience its natural beauty by hiking one of its panoramic and well-maintained nature trails. You can learn about its past by watching a 15-minute multimedia presentation at the Dow’s Hill Interpretation Centre, and although you’re welcome to explore the Dockyard at your leisure, guided tours are also readily available and included in your entrance fee. The Victorian-style Dockyard Museum (open daily from 9am to 5pm) is a cool and pleasant building showcasing many interesting artefacts from bygone years. It was once erroneously known as the Admiral’s House, but Nelson never lived ashore while in Antigua. The Dockyard also plays host to several special events throughout the year, including Antigua Sailing Week, Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta and RORC Caribbean 600. Charming boutiques sell everything from jewellery to resort wear, Island Secret well worth visiting for its high-quality local products and unusual gift ideas.
Of course, Shirley Heights Lookout has long been the place to be on Sunday afternoons. Perched almost 500 feet above Nelson’s Dockyard with 360-degree views over Falmouth and English Harbours, this famous party venue offers the most spectacular views of the sun setting over Nelson’s Dockyard.

There are also unique restaurants in the area. The Copper & Lumber Store is an historical inn, while waterfront dining is on offer at the aptly-named Pillars restaurant in the Admiral’s Inn. Boom is its sister eatery just across the bay, its views as good as its food.
If you're in the mood, create and bottle your very own Caribbean rum! A water taxi will take you across the harbour to Academy of Rum at Galleon Beach.

ANTIGUA’S BEACHES JABBERWOCK BEACH Part of the National Park, this long stretch of white sand beach on the Atlantic coast is popular with local people taking morning and evening walks. It’s also the base for windsurfing and kitesurfing.
HALF MOON BAY On our southeast coast and offering some spectacular wave action. Considered one of the world's finest beaches, its white sands stretch around a picture-postcard bay. Refreshments are available at two beach bars and restaurants.
DUTCHMAN’S BAY This secluded beach lies opposite Long Island, home of the Jumby Bay Island resort. Excellent restaurants here include the Garden Grill, Gather Steakhouse, and Cecilia’s High Point Café.
PIGEON POINT BEACH A popular beach with tranquil waters tucked away in a sheltered cove. It’s been environmentally developed into a recreational facility with camping areas, a children’s playground and bathroom facilities. Nelson’s Dockyard is nearby.
LONG BAY This beautiful east coast beach is famous for its calm waters and snorkelling. It’s also an ideal family venue with small restaurants. The Pineapple Beach Club overlooks the sands, and you’ll find the Devil’s Bridge beauty spot a short drive away. 58

Our offshore islands are refuges for everything from whistling ducks and frigate birds to wild boar and Hawksbill turtles...
M
any of the islands lie in the North Sound, an idyllic marine park off our northeast coast. Think talcum-powder sands, crystal clear waters and a relaxed Robinson Crusoe-like vibe. The islands can only be reached by boat, of course, but the distances are short. The seas are usually calm and easily navigable by small vessels, as well as by larger yachts familiar with the coral reefs. Most of the day-trip cruise boats tie up close to the main islands. Great Bird Island is particularly popular, although during the week you can have the place to yourselves. You may even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the small, harmless and endangered Antigua Racer snake found nowhere else in the world. Nearby Guiana Island has a wide sandy beach, Green Island further along the coast is worth a visit too, and day trips are readily available to Prickly Pear just off Hodges Bay. Rabbit Island is another interesting island. It's home to breeding colonies of Caribbean brown pelicans, the only diving pelicans in the world. They raise their young in twiggy nests, clearly visible to anyone passing. Some have the good fortune to see the babies with large beaks open, growing to become awkward juveniles, eventually flying off until the next season. At Hell’s Gate Island there’s an incredible limestone bridge formed by the elements over millennia. Named for the wild Atlantic seas visible through the archway, strolling across the fragile bridge isn't recommended!

Some 25-miles to the southwest is Antigua’s ‘third’ possession, Redonda. Once a desolate expanse of rock noted for its 19th century guano-mining industry, it’s now said to be one of the region’s most ecologically important landscapes. Four years of work by local environmentalists have restored trees and plants, increased the number of critically endangered reptiles, and attracted even more nesting seabirds including boobies and tropicbirds. Visitors will be permitted once the rejuvenation work is completed. Long Island just off our north shore is slightly more glamorous, of course. Our twin sister island is a true eco-paradise
The Codrington Lagoon National Park is a unique component of the island’s ecosystem and renowned for supporting one of the world’s largest colonies of frigate birds (Fregata magnificens). They flourish happily here despite being a prized tourist attraction. The male frigate birds are particularly spectacular during the mating season, their wingspan nearly 3 metres and their scarlet throat sacs blown up to the size of balloons to attract their mates. The fluffy, young chicks are clearly visible to visitors, their ever-open beaks stuffed with delicious fish by their swooping parents. Other birds that thrive here include pelicans, tropical mockingbirds, warblers, snipes, ibis, herons, kingfishers, oystercatchers, cormorants and West Indian whistling ducks. Barbuda is a coral-fringed island just 62sqm in size. It rises low on the sea only 27 miles to the north of Antigua. Formed from coralline limestone, Barbuda is much flatter than Antigua with a maximum altitude of 40 metres and an average elevation of 4 metres above sea level. The Codrington Lagoon National Park is a birdwatchers’ paradise complete with a frigate bird sanctuary, and other wildlife that calls the island home include wild boars, red-footed tortoises and various species of sea turtle. The elusive fallow deer is emblematic on the nation’s coat-of-arms. Offshore there are as many as 73 charted shipwrecks, as well as coral reefs for snorkelling and scuba-diving in water as clear as glass. Deep-sea fishing and flyfishing can be arranged, with foot trails, island treks and camping trips also available. Interesting natural sites include Indian Cave, Darby’s Cave and the idyllic Spanish Point. If you’re interested in the island’s past, a trip to Highland House, the historically important ruins of the Codrington estate, is well worthwhile. You might also like to visit the Martello tower and fort on the south coast. This imposing fortress was not only used for defence but also as a vantage point from which to spot valuable shipwrecks on the outlying reefs. So, there you have it, Barbuda has something for everyone – natural beauty, a peaceful way of life and a history that’s as interesting as its wildlife. The adjacent streets of the capital are well worth exploring too, the colourful Vendors’ Mall perfect if you’re looking for local hats, T-shirts and wraps to take home with you as souvenirs or gifts. Head north of St. John's and you’ll find three more shopping malls off the Friars Hill Road. Woods Mall has banks, a post office, a travel agency, and the excellent Woods Pharmacy with its expert pharmacists. The nearby Village Walk Mall features Harpers for all your stationary and office supplies and Café Bella which is a popular spot for barista coffees and light snacks. Further along is the Royal Palm Place with a number of outlets including a beauty salon and The Larder restaurant for the best sushi on island. You can stock up your own larder in this area too. Our air-conditioned supermarkets include 1st Choice on the Anchorage Road close to Dickenson Bay, Cost Pro at the Woods Mall, The Gourmet Basket on Sir George H. Walter Highway, and the Island Provision complex on the airport road. Epicurean has grown into a super-supermarket just off Friars Hill Road, with another branch at Jolly Harbour on the west coast. All of these stores offer fresh produce, as well as excellent brands sourced from around the world. The boutiques of English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour in the south of the island cater more to the cosmopolitan sailing crowd. As long as the yachts are in harbour, everything from swimwear and resort wear to local arts, crafts and jewellery can be found. Bailey’s, Crab Hole Liquors, Covent Garden and The Cork & Basket are where to grocery shop in this area. And last but not least are the duty-free shops of V.C. Bird International Airport. Our twin-island nation has long been a popular port-of-call for the world's biggest and best cruise ships. After all, we are ideally located in the heart of the Caribbean Sea... With state-of-the-art vessels offering all the latest facilities, activities and experiences, it’s little wonder cruise tourism continues to be one of the most dynamic sectors of our leisure industry. The Antigua & Barbuda Government certainly recognises how important cruising is to our economy. They’ve not just invited Antigua Cruise Port to further develop our cruise tourism product, but they’ve also strengthened our relationship with the cruise lines. And their efforts are paying dividends, the completion of the fifth pier now enabling us to welcome the world’s largest cruise ships to our shores, including those in the Excel and Oasis classes. Indeed, January 2023 saw the arrival of the largest vessel to ever visit this country, the MS Arvia from P&O Cruises. St. John’s is also now serving as a homeport where cruise itineraries begin and end. The Arvia made
four homeporting calls with about 800 passengers embarking and debarking in Antigua each visit. Such was the success of this that Emerald Cruises and Royal Clipper will also do turnarounds in St. John’s, generating even more economic benefits for our nation. Other exciting developments include a cruise terminal and retail mall adjacent to the fifth pier, and it’s fitting that smaller and more exclusive vessels are now being encouraged to focus their attention on our sister island of Barbuda. Antigua’s local tour operators certainly have no problem keeping pace with the future increase in visitor numbers. Complementing our 365 beautiful beaches are an ever-growing number of adventurous activities, unique excursions and historic tours designed to suit every taste and age group. And, of course, all of us very much hope that a cruise ship visit of just one day will lead to much longer stays in our twin-island nation.

JOHN’S AREA The Yard on St. Mary’s Street is busy on ‘Thirsty Thursdays’, C&C Wine Bar in Redcliffe Quay always has South African wine chilling, while North Antigua on Old Parham Road is a popular sports bar. Scullduggery Café in Falmouth Harbour is much loved for its chocolate martinis, while nearby Cloggy’s and South Point are sophisticated meeting spots where the cocktails come with prime views of the yachts at anchor. Although even these views are eclipsed by those from Shirley Heights almost 500 feet above sea level. Take a short drive through the National Park to the top of the hill and you’ll come to Shirley Heights Lookout with its historic bar and spectacular vistas over English and Falmouth Harbours. ELVIE’S POTTERY
Seaview Farm Tel: (268) 463-1888 Hyacinth Hillhouse continues in the tradition begun by her grandmother and mother of making coal-pots and other items from the local clay found near Seaview Farm. Originally used to heat the evening meals over hot coals, the earthenware pots are now largely decorative, although many houses still have one in case the gas runs out! The pots are shaped by hand rather than on a wheel and only a handful of people still have the necessary skills. Your support for this dying art is much appreciated.

Let’s start with everyone's favourite Caribbean tipple. Rum! Some of the world's very best are produced right here on the island by Antigua Distillery. English Harbour 5 Year and English Harbour 10 Year Reserve don't just make the perfect sundowners when you’re on-island, but after a busy day back home too. They're also welcome gifts, the miniature collections easy to pack, as are the plastic bottles of Cavalier Gold and White. Kococaribe is also a true taste of the islands.
For Caribbean literature, head for ‘The Best of Books on Lower St. Mary's Street in St. John's. This muchloved store boasts the widest variety of books in the Eastern Caribbean, including two recently published children's novels written by acclaimed local authors — Turtle Beach by Barbara Arrindell and To Be A Cheetah by Joanne C. Hillhouse. You'll also find a ‘Made in Antigua’ section selling everything from savoury jams to island art.
Our speciality coffees have a distinct flavour of the tropics too. Carib Bean Coffee Roasters have been producing delicious blends on a hilltop overlooking Falmouth Harbour for the past 20 years. Their 15 varieties range from ‘Joy in the Morning’ to ‘Dark & Stormy’, their beans primarily sourced from the Caribbean and South America.
We're crafty here too. At the entrance to Nelson’s Dockyard, you’ll find ladies selling t-shirts, as well as jewellery made from the seeds of our wild tamarind and mimosa trees. Vanessa Ravenello, the owner of Vanessa Designs, delights everyone with her homemade beach bags, table cloths, cushion covers and children’s clothes.
Our local foodstuffs take full advantage of the natural treasures of the West Indies too. They include the hot sauces, pepper jellies and delicious dips of Mariel's Kitchen. Posh Pirate Honey is harvested from our hives on a seasonal basis, while Wadadli Coconut Oil produces a health and beauty staple that can be used to moisturise your skin and protect your hair.
And always make time for the Artisans Antigua Travelling Market whenever it pops up around the island. (See www.artisansantiguamarket.com) Everything from make-up and soap to jewellery and herbal teas are sold at this unique craft and farmers market. It's a true showcase of the creativity, originality and traditional skills very much in evidence here.

USEFUL TO KNOW GEOGRAPHY
Located in the heart of the Caribbean, Antigua is 108 sqm. in size and about 13 miles across. Barbuda is 62 sqm. and lies 27 miles to our north. Tiny and uninhabited Redonda lies 20 miles north-west. There are about 98,000 people in Antigua, 1,500 in Barbuda and only seagulls on Redonda. From Antigua you can see Guadeloupe, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis.
CLIMATE
Temperatures range from an average low of 73°F (23°C) in winter to 85°F (30°C) in summer. The trade winds are fairly constant except September. The average rainfall is about 45 inches so there’s constant care not to waste water. The rainy season is September to November, but the showers are usually short.
CLOTHING
Antigua still retains a semblance of formality and swimsuits are limited to beaches. There is a nude beach beyond Hawksbill but this is not generally frequented by residents! Casual clothes are the unwritten rule for dining and trips to town.
LANGUAGE
Although English is the only language ever adopted in the island, you may wonder what some of us are saying when we chat in the local lingo. Everybody sooner or later acquires a few idiomatic phrases such as “No big ting” or “Antigua me come from.”
ELECTRICITY
Antigua has a current quirk. Most hotels operate on 110 volts (same as the US and Canada), but some have 220 volts like the UK, and homes may even have a bit of both. Check before plugging in appliances.
CURRENCY
Our currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC$) issued by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) and pegged to the US$ at an official rate of EC$2.70 to US$1. The ECCB quotes daily rates for the Canadian $, the Euro, the £ Sterling and other currencies.
CALCULATING COSTS
Hotel rates are cheaper outside the ‘season’ from December to April. Some hotels offer special packages for honeymooners etc. Check with your travel agent or Antigua Hotels & Tourist Association, Newgate Street, St. John’s, Tel: (268) 462-0374/3703/4928. There is 10% service charge (which saves the bother of tipping), as well as a 17% ABS Tax and Guest Levy Tax of US$3 per night for room rates below US$150 and US$5 per night above US$150.

The main Post Office lies at the foot of Long Street in St. John’s. Open Monday to Thursdays: 8.15am to 3pm. Fridays: 8:15am to 2pm. Tel: (268) 562-1929. INTERNET & WIFI
Free wifi is widely available in hotels, restaurants and bars, although you may need to request an access code. It is also available in the airport departure lounge. The locally-owned telecommunications company APUA, as well as international companies like Digicel and Flow, operate a 4G LTE network with 100% island-wide coverage. You can also purchase a local SIM card to work on an unlocked phone. Be sure to check your provider's roaming charges first.

Most hotels are serviced by a 24-hour ‘Duty Doctor’ and in an emergency the reception staff will contact them for you. Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre lies just off Queen Elizabeth Highway.
