TONY AND MONIKA JAKICEVICH

The Glengarry Story Monika Jakicevich, our Matriarch and Family Treasure, turns 90 this month. As we’re looking at women in wine, we thought it only appopriate that we kick things off with a few words from the woman herself, back in the day a driver of tractors, runner of shops and wrangler of children. She may be about to crack 90, but be warned: you still need to keep your wits about you when in her presence! ‘Growing up in Herne Bay in the 1940s with a big family that included five brothers and one sister was a friendly, sheltered, safe environment where people talked to each other on the street. My father, James, was a founding member of the Yugoslav Club, and belonged to its associated sports club. We mingled with many other Croatians. ‘It was there that I met Tony in 1950, and we married in 1952. Tony’s father, Joseph, had just established Glengarry Wines and opened his first wine shop on Jervois Road, where it is still trading today. Tony and I lived at the family vineyard on Glengarry Rd in Oratia, West Auckland, making a living from growing beans, and eventually strawberries, which became the main game from 1955 onwards. This sustained us as there was no money in wine in those days. It wasn’t until the 1970s that we saw its popularity increase, which led to the arrival of more Glengarry stores. ‘Tony was held in great respect, not least by his kids, who were always there helping. With six children, life was busy, and with crops and winemaking it was all hands on deck. We got by on very little, knowing we could make ends meet. It’s a different world today, by golly. We tried many ways to get ahead, and there were plenty of failures, but we gave everything our best, with the faith that it would all work out. ‘My children have had many opportunities in life, working in the wine industry, and it has given me great satisfaction to see those that chose to get involved in the family business contribute in the ways best-suited to their skills. There has always been a big pool of candidates, there currently being 27 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. I believe you can achieve anything when you put your mind to it and give it your best. While I don’t know what the future holds, I certainly hope the business perseveres and grows as more opportunities unfold for my family. ‘I never forget the simple traditions of life; they are important, whether it be gathering together for festive occasions or just going around to visit your mum or grandmother on a Sunday. Hint, hint.’ M. R. M. Jakicevich

WOMEN IN WINE | M ARLBOROUGH

In an industry traditionally dominated by men, Jules Taylor is one of New Zealand’s original pioneers putting a female stamp on things, and a genuine breath of fresh air. She has long maintained an ethos of making high quality, affordable wines to be consumed and enjoyed rather than stashed away in cellars. Born and bred in Marlborough, Jules grew up in the time when that region’s Sauvignon Blanc was wowing the world and setting a Kiwi benchmark. Perhaps inevitable, then, that she would end up with a career pursuing that line. Following a postgraduate course in winemaking and viticulture, winemaking OE in Italy and Australia and winemaking duties at a number of high profile Marlborough estates, she took the plunge in 2001 and established Jules Taylor Wines with husband George Elworthy. Led from the front by their superb Sauvignon Blanc, the entire portfolio has since collected many awards. Jules: ‘We source grapes from vineyards in the Wairau and Awatere Valleys; well, not so much vineyards as back corners of vineyards, rises and hollows and bits of vineyards.’ Still family-owned and operated in Marlborough by Jules and George, Jules Taylor Wines is now an internationallyrecognised wine brand with a global network of loyal fans.

WOMEN IN WINE | CHILE

In the vanguard of South America’s high-achieving winemakers

Andrea León The Chilean wine industry has undergone much change in the last fifteen to twenty years, its evolution not dissimilar to that of New Zealand’s. Over this time, Chile has made a name for itself on the world stage, recognised for wines sitting at both the value and the premium ends of the market. 20 years ago, the concept of women working high-level roles in wine, particularly in the context of Chile’s patriarchally-inclined society, would have been unthinkable. Andrea León Iriate studied agricultural engineering in Santiago, where she double majored in economics and oenology & viticulture. She eventually left Chile to gain vinous experience in America, Europe and New Zealand. On her return, Andrea worked at Santa Helena in Colchagua before joining Lapostolle in 2005 as the on-site winemaker for Clos Apalta. In 2020 she took charge of the technical and winemaking operations for Domaines Bournet-Lapostolle, a demanding job that involves extended periods of time apart from family. Lapostolle was founded by Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle, great-granddaughter of the creator of Grand Marnier, and her husband Cyril de Bournet. In 2005 their iconic wine, Clos Apalta, made history as the first and, to date, only South American wine to be ranked No.1 in Wine Spectator’s celebrated Top 100 Wines.

Caroline Latrive became the winemaker (or as the Champagne region would have it, the chef de cave) at Ayala in 2011. In her role, she is responsible for maintaining absolute consistency in style and quality. Ayala was established in 1860 and purchased in 2005 by Bollinger. Growing up in Reims, Caroline’s father was an oenologist and her grandfather was a grape grower; he went on to become president of a Wine Growers’ Association. While champagne is well and truly in her veins, Caroline herself never envisaged that she would end up as a chef de cave. While she was studying in Reims, Caroline was one of only five women in a class of 23, whereas today, just over 60% of those in Reims are female. Upon completing her education, she worked for a period at Bollinger before moving to assist her father in his business. When he sold up, Caroline opted to increase her qualifications before returning to Bollinger. With expertise in quality control under her belt, she was asked to oversee Ayala through its purchase in 2005, which subsequently led to her appointment to her current role. Ayala’s recent evolution with Caroline at the helm – combined with Bollinger’s expertise and financial backing – is producing some of its best wines ever.

WOMEN IN WINE | ALSACE

MANAGING DIRECTOR CÉLINE MEYER AND WINEMAKER ISABELLE MEYER

Isabelle Meyer Shaping the fif th generation of the family business When it comes to aromatic wines, no one does it better than the inhabitants of Alsace. Founded in 1854 by Aloyse Meyer, the organic and biodynamic Josmeyer is the jewel in our Alsatian range. The Meyer family operate at the highest level, producing dazzling aromatic wines with an artistry and purity others can only aspire to. Isabelle Meyer is the current head of winemaking, responsible for the vinification and blending of the cuvées. She has qualifications in viticulture and oenology and joined the winery in 1994. She is also a member of the family board and works with her father, Jean Meyer, to cultivate the local market. The Josmeyer domaine covers 25 hectares, five of which are on the slopes of the Grand Cru vineyards Brand and Hengst. Their superb starting point is a Pinot Gris that sets the benchmark, the wine you really hope anyone who intends to make Pinot Gris tastes at some stage. Deliciously textured peach and honey characters travel in a seamless arc across your taste buds. From there on in, the Grand Cru wines are simply sublime, a lesson in precision and balance. In our most recent shipment we were lucky to have secured small parcels of their Vendange Tardive and Selection de Grains Nobles, some of the finest sweet wines in the world.

NELSON

As a wine region, Nelson has for a long time resided in the shadow of Marlborough. Steven Spurrier called it home to New Zealand’s finest aromatics, although originally it was the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir expressions that the region was recognised for. The relatively mild maritime climate combined with an excess of sunshine hours provides a good degree of fruit purity, with production small but quality high. Nelson is the source of elegant and complex Chardonnay, restrained, mineral-infused Sauvignon Blanc, fragrant Pinot Noir and a rich variety of aromatic wines. There are two significant sub-regions, Moutere and the Waimea Plains.

Middle-Earth

Tapping into New Zealand’s Sunshine Central As a child, Rob Grey moved to Brightwater in Nelson’s Tasman district from Southland, and in 1996 he began the transferral of the family property from dairy farm to vineyards. Initially providing premium-quality fruit for brands such as Kim Crawford and Craggy Range, in 2011 Rob’s daughter Kylie and her husband Ryan O’Connell moved back to Brightwater, where together with Rob they launched Middle-Earth Wines. Middle-Earth is accredited 100% sustainable, with a producing area that totals more than 50 hectares across various blocks and lies in the confluence of two rivers. The ancient alluvial soils are stony and free-draining with layered river silts. Expert vineyard management is aided by computer-controlled, drip-fed water when required. Sheep are used for grass and weed control. High sunshine hours and the cool, clear skies of autumn provide a slow ripening period that helps to retain the vibrant varietal flavours. Rob acts as a travelling ambassador for the brand and continues to oversee vineyard operations, while winemaking duties are undertaken by Trudy Shield, who arrived from a 13-year stint with Nelson’s Waimea Estate and harvests in Australia, France and Italy.

RENACER

Argentina’s most significant wine-producing region, Mendoza accounts for almost two-thirds of the country’s production. Located in the eastern foothills of the Andes, vineyards are planted at some of the highest altitudes in the world, with the average site located 600–1100 metres above sea level. While historically known for its value-oriented offerings, the Argentine industry now produces some of the greatest fine wines in the world. Many of these are derived from high altitude vineyards, in a style that breaks with the traditional juicy and fruit-forward image of the region’s most planted variety, Malbec. While Malbec still dominates, other varietals are on the rise, including Cabernet Sauvignon and the variety on everyone’s lips, Cabernet Franc. With its continental climate and semi-arid conditions, the ability to access water from mountain rivers has been critical in making viticulture in a desert possible at all.

Hawkes Bay

19822

WAIANA ESTATE INDIAN SUMMER ROSÉ 2020

With viticulture having taken root here in 1851, Hawkes Bay has been a significant force in the evolution of the New Zealand wine industry. The list of pioneers includes Mission Estate, Te Mata, Vidal, Taradale (now Church Road) and Glenvale (now Esk Valley). This is a vast region, with 1.4 million hectares spread along 350km of Pacific coastline. Over thousands of years, the valleys and terraces that provide the region’s diversity were formed as the four main rivers moved, leaving behind everything from limestone sands to free-draining gravels. These two soil types favour the key varieties for the Bay, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, with forays into the hillsides also finding a welcoming home for Syrah.

Philipponnat The Philipponnat family have been cultivating the soils of Champagne for almost 500 years. In the 16th century they were winegrowers and merchants, supplying the court of Louis XIV. From their 18th-Century cellars, the family produce distinctive, full-bodied, Pinot Noir-dominated expressions. Included in their estate is the legendary wall-enclosed Clos des Goisses vineyard, arguably the region’s finest, from where they produce their most powerful champagnes. With a strong emphasis on conservation and sustainability, natural methods are employed to work the soil, involving hoeing by hand and ploughing with horses. Always vintaged and very lightly dosed, their richly expressive, highly individual wines are characterized by incredible length and body. Family control is in the hands of chef de cave Charles Philipponnat, who has been running things since 2000. With careful vision, skill and attention to detail, Charles is redefining his family’s champagne house in a steady return to its former glory days.

LOVEBLOCK’S ERICA AND KIM CRAWFORD

Aromatics There is a group of white wines, made from grapes containing high levels of organic compounds known as terpenes, that are classified as ‘aromatic’. Terpenes are responsible for enticing floral aromas evoking the scents of rose petal or orange blossom. With something like a Gewürztraminer, they jump out of the glass, while with a semi-aromatic variety such as Pinot Gris, it depends on the source of the fruit as to how enveloping the nose will be. Classic aromatic wines include Riesling, Viognier, Gewürztraminer and Muscat. They are produced in a variety of weights and textures and, stylistically, range from bone-dry, containing no natural sweetness, to off-dry styles that display hints of natural residual sugar. If the grapes have been left for late harvest or affected by botrytis, the wines can be intensely sweet. The dry and medium-dry styles tend to be lighter-bodied, with lower alcohol and higher acidity, making them ideal as aperitifs and superb partners to a wide selection of foods.

Chardonnay One of the world’s great wines, Chardonnay is the variety behind the famed white wines of Burgundy. Often referred to as the winemaker’s wine, it generally flourishes in a variety of situations, producing wonderful fruit that is evocative of the terroir, without the pungent thiols exhibited by Sauvignon Blanc or the racy acidity of Riesling. Chardonnay provides a relatively neutral canvas for winemakers, one with many variables: the type of yeast, lees stirring, use of barrel, size of barrel, type of barrel, time in barrel, temperature in barrel, no barrel, malolactic fermentation... etcetera. With all of that present in the winemaker’s arsenal, it comes as no surprise that the resulting wines encompass a wide variety of styles. At Glengarry we divide Chardonnays into four styles: Oak Lite (lean, lively and minerally inclined), Peaches & Cream, (soft and fruity), Deep & Meaningful (rich, textural and balanced) and Fat Cats (big, bold and oaky).

Lower Alcohol Cocktails

Easy-on-the-head and wallet-friendly cock tail kits for your stay-at-home soirées

Enter a smart cocktail bar and you’ll often be asked what spirit you’d like to base your drink on, with the general options gin, vodka, rum, etc. Our Cocktail Classics on the following page fit neatly into that category. You could, however, start with white port, Fino sherry, or an Italian vermouth. Your base is lower in alcohol than the norm, and depending on what you then add, the resulting cocktail becomes a lower alcohol cocktail, refreshing in the summer sun and a tasty alternative. Starting with a different array of bases opens up an even broader range of flavours and possible combinations. We have created four such cocktails using white port, fino sherry, vermouth, amaros and a host of other ingredients. Just click on the pictures for the recipe, ingredients and a how to.

COGNAC

Tesseron

We are very excited to have the incredible Tesseron Cognac house return to New Zealand. Abel Tesseron turned his passionate hobby into a business in 1905, when he purchased vineyards in Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne. For almost 100 years they were one of the finest distillers and blenders in the region. Tesseron had a reputation for holding large reserves of extremely old eaux-de-vie, kept in their thirteenth century crypt. All this production was sold to the big-name houses, who used these rare components to complete their finest blends. From 2003 onwards this practice was discontinued, and they began only bottling under their own name. Abel’s grandson Alfred Tesseron now runs the house, along with the famed Bordeaux Chateau Pontet-Canet. New to the range is their first ever non-X.O. release, Tesseron ‘Composition’. This is a lovely sipping Cognac, but was specifically designed and tested to be used to make the great classic cocktails. For special occasions, try the incredible new EXTRA LÉGENDE. Made with grapes exclusively from Grande Champagne, this is a marriage of fifty reserve eaux-de-vie, aged in cellars with differing levels of humidity for at least a generation (Twenty-five plus years). | RM
