Introduction AN EARLY DRINKING VINTAGE So, in a nutshell, what’s the vintage like? Frost is the obvious first point to deal with and one that was a constant discussion theme when this vintage was tasted En Primeur. Sadly, there are many who have lost a lot of their crop from this vintage, though generally the top properties and the left bank were less effected. Drought the next consideration, it was very hot in the later part of the growing season, the vines started to be too stressed with heat. Rain the next cab off the rank in 2017, this fortunately came at the right moment for the cabernet, which if then left was excellent in 2017. On the left bank, these conditions didn’t favour Merlot, with higher proportions of Cabernet this year. The right banks plateau around Pomerol and blue clay fared well. Overall, the wines are very classic, they are not fruit forward, they are wonderfully ripe and with a burst of fresh acidity. These are not wines for long term cellaring, wines that will be short to medium term wines. A standout from this year, is Sauternes, it’s a lovely sweet with vintage.


This was a pleasurable vintage to taste En Primeur. Precise, balance and classic are the words that appeared over and over in my notes. In some recent years, the ripeness of the vintage has for me been a deterrent to the wine exploding its individual site character, this year, the appellation character was clear. This is something that for me is very important in fine Bordeaux, I love a good Margaux that screams Margaux from the glass, too much sameness does not appeal. For this reason, I really did like the 2017 wines. What’s for sure though is that these wines are not going to need a huge amount of time in the cellar, they are not big wines. These are wines for early drinking, short to medium term cellaring wines. For those with 2010, 2015 and 2016 in their cellars, this is good news, as these wines are going to need a lot more time yet and the 2017 will represent something to enjoy before then.

Those vineyards effected by frost, generally produced less wine this year, the quality though was very good. It was certainly very evident that the producers had talked all they wanted to about the frost and that’s fair.


2017 Vintage It is prejudicial to look at this vintage, with this very early weather pattern in mind and not consider anything else. There’s always much more of a story to a vintage that one weather event. What followed was a very hot period, which whilst great for ripening the grapes went on longer than ideal and did result in hydric stress for some vines. Fortunately, it was at just this point that rain came. The rain provided the water the vines to desperately needed and put the balance back into the grapes. Bordeaux

To start the journey of exploring Bordeaux, you need to first start with the Classification System. In 1855, being lovers of red tape, the French authorities created what became known as ‘The Classified Growths of the Médoc ’. A five-class classification of 61 of the leading Médoc Châteaux (as well as two from Graves). This formalised lists that were already in place, based on each Châteaux relative quality as expressed by the prices of each individual estate. These growths, or ‘crus’ range from first (premier) through to fifth (cinquièmes). Over the years that have since passed, there has been very little change to the 1855 Classification other than Château Mouton Rothschild moving from second growth to first in 1973 - Baron Philippe de Rothschild reportedly saying - ‘Mouton I am, Second I am not”. Château Cantemerle added as a fifth growth in 1856 and Château Dubignon, a third growth was absorbed into Château Malescot St Exupéry.


Bordeaux Saint-Émilion added its own classification system in 1955, which has subsequently been frequently amended. Pomerol has never been classified, although the greatest wine from this region, Château Pétrus, is generally spoken of in the same hushed tones as the five first growths of the Médoc. The Médoc First Growths are; Château Lafite-Rothschild (Pauillac) Château Margaux (Margaux) Château Latour (Pauillac) - not sold En Primeur Château Haut-Brion (Graves) Château Mouton-Rothschild (Pauillac) Whilst much of the classification system holds true today, the inherent problem with a system is that some of the Châteaux have improved out of sight since it was first introduced, while others are considered to have rested on their laurels, smug in the knowledge that their wines will always fetch high prices, as this was what the classification was based on in the first place. Like anything, it is a good guide as long as one keeps in mind the fact that some of the wines outside its boundaries can still be superb. Bordeaux is located in the South West of France, and is the wine region that produces more top quality wine than any other. Bordeaux is renowned for its reds, which are often referred to as claret. The reason

these wines attract so much interest, and generate such high prices, is largely their ability to age, with a lot of them not showing their true potential for decades. The main red grapes grown are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The most famous white region is that of Sauternes, where the world’s most luscious dessert wines come from. The White wines from Bordeaux are made with Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and in some cases Muscadelle; the very best white wines, like red wines from Bordeaux, are extremely age worthy.


Château Coutet Château Coutet is one of the oldest estates in Sauternes, an appellation possessing a magical collection of conditions that allow it to produce some of the greatest sweet wines in the world. Classified as First Growth in 1855, Coutet has an outstanding heritage, belonging to the de Lur Saluces family,of Chateau d’Yquem fame, for over a century. It is currently owned and operated by Philippe and Dominique Baly in a technical and commercial collaboration with Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A. The 38. 5 hectare estate is planted in 75% Sémillion, 23% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle.

"The 2017 Coutet is very, very good. Nuanced and beautifully textured, throughout, the 2017 has quite a bit to offer. Silky contours add finesse to the orange peel, apricot jam, mint and spice flavors. Above all else, Coutet offers terrific depth while remaining light on its feet.Antonio Galloni 91-94 The 2017 Coutet, which was tasted both as a final blend and directly from several different lots in barrel, has a very well defined bouquet with pure wild honey and orange blossom aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is crisp and fresh, underpinned by Coutet’s trademark acidic drive that counterbalances the intense honeyed fruit laced with orange zest and white peach. Superb.Neal Martin 94-96 "

Château Doisy-Daëne Located in Barsac on the limestone plateau that sits between Barsac and Sauternes, Château Doisy-Daëne was classified in 1855 as Grand Cru Classé Second Growth. Four generations of the Dubourdieu family have overseen the impeccable quality that comes out of the estate, with the talented Denis Dubourdieu (professor of oenology at Bordeaux University, international fix-it man and consultant to many) now at the helm. Situated on a combination of clay and limestone, the 17.2 hectares of vines are divided into 87% Semillon and 13% Sauvignon Blanc.

CHATEAU DOISY DAENE SECOND CRU CLASSE (375ml)

"A wine of real density and weight, the 2017 Doisy-Daëne is positively stunning. It is also likely to require a number of years to be at its best, given its currently reserved, shy state of mind. The 2017 is marked by an almost phenolic impression of structure. There is so much to admire, including the wine's explosive energy, but the best is very obviously still to come. What a wine! Antonio Galloni 93-96 The 2017 Doisy-Daëne is a little richer on the nose compared to recent vintages, quite pure with acacia honey, melted wax and touches of almond filtering through with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a viscous opening, finely judged acidity, borrowing some of the weight usually expressed by Doisy-Védrines to create a very satisfying and opulent finish. It does not give the live-wire tension that is common in this Barsac, but it does give plenty of depth and length.Neal Martin 93-95 "

Château Lanessan One of the most well known and respected names in the Haut-Médoc, Château Lanessan dates back to at least 1310. It was brought in 1793 by Jean Delbos, who refused to submit the wine for the 1855 Classification in the belief that it was “bureaucratic nonsense” and would add nothing to the estate’s already good reputation. Lanessan’s impressive Tudor-style building was constructed in 1878 by Andrée Delbos, who also expanded the estate to include stables in the shape of a horseshoe. Eight generation later, Lanessan is still owned by the Bouteiller family, who are direct descendents of Jean Delbos. This has always been an extremely popular wine due to its high quality, traditional style, low price, and ability to age for decades. The vineyards are situated on mostly gravel soils, planted in 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc.

"The 2017 Lanessan has really developed well over the last year and a half. Far deeper and more complex than it was from barrel, the 2017 possesses terrific mid-palate pliancy and depth. Sweet tobacco, grilled herbs, menthol, licorice and dried flowers add lovely shades of nuance to this attractive mid-weight Haut-Médoc Cru Bourgeois-Antonio Galloni 89 The 2017 Lanessan has a well defined bouquet with brambly red fruit, cedar and light tobacco notes, your quintessential Haut-Médoc really. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, quite supple tannins. Château Suduiraut Château Suduiraut and Sauternes go back to 1580, and they produce one of the great Premier Cru Classé sweet wines. Indeed, meticulous and uncompromising is what they are, with tailored plot selection, grape-by-grape harvesting and fastidious control over the fermentation of each individual barrel. The wine’s aging capacity is off the chart. The estate was significantly renovated in the 17th Century by the Count Blaise de Suduiraut, grandson of the founder, its stunning grounds and lakes courtesy of Le Nôtre, the designer of the gardens at Versailles. Like many Bordeaux estates, Suduiraut has passed through a number of hands. Losing its way somewhat in the 1940’s-1960’s, there has been a distinct return to form under the stewardship of insurance group AXA, who seem to have their fingers in a number of significant Bordeaux pies. With 92 hectares under vine, the wines are deeply opulent and highly collectible.

CHATEAU SUDUIRAUT PREMIER CRU CLASSE

94% Semillon, 6% Sauvignon, 16hl/ha, picked in three tries. Gorgeous aromatics, lively with plenty of lemon and lime characters and a wonderful floral note. The intensity on the palate is superb with a delightful touch of toast and smoke. 140gm RS, 14% abv. The acidity is the key to this year, it’s higher than the 15 or 16 and gives the wonderful freshness that persists through to the end of this wine. A great Suduiraut for sure.

Chateau Beaumont Chateau Beaumont is a large Cru Bourgeois estate in the Haut-Medoc appellation which can trace its history back to 1824. Located on the left bank of the Gironde, between the communes of Margaux and Saint Julien, Chateau Beaumont draws its finesse and its delicacy from the deep gravels of the best soils of the Haut-MĂŠdoc.

A lot to enjoy, good quality for early to medium drinking with attractive freshness through the finish, plus touches of eucalyptus and mint. A little less generous than the 2016 vintage but it’s aided by a sweetness pushing through the mid-palate. There is clear structure and form to the bramble fruit, despite the fact that frost lowered the yield to 25hl/ha. Jane Anson 87

Château Cantemerle With a majestic courtyard, neoclassical architecture and cutting edge technology, Château Cantemerle is a Château of perfect harmony. Located in the Haut-Médoc appellation, the Cantemerle’s vines produce complex, balanced and refined wines. The vineyard has 94 hectares planted and 91 hectares in production, with an average vine 30 years old. The winery is home to three thermo chests with a total capacity of 8000 hectolitres, a wooden vat with a 3400 hectolitre capacity for old vines, a stainless steel vat with a 2200 hectolitre capacity for young vines and a cement vat with a 2400 hectolitre capacity for blends.

"Rich plum colour, 20% down on volume due to frost but still delivering plenty of damson fruit on the nose. This feels slick and well extracted, with smoked grilled notes from oak. Château Phélan Ségur Located within the Left Bank appellation of Saint-Estèphe, Château Phélan Ségur owes its name to founder, Irishman Bernard Phelan, who merged the properties of Clos de Garramey and Domaine Ségur de Cabanac, eventually taken over by his son Frank and renamed Château Phélan Ségur, with a second wine introduced under the moniker of Frank Phélan. This is a 70-hectare property, planted with 53% Cabernet and 47% Merlot on gravel and clay soils.

The 2017 Phélan Ségur has turned out beautifully. A wine of real substance and personality, Phélan Ségur is endowed with quite a bit of depth. Black plum, chocolate, spice, leather and mocha are some of the many notes that infuse this wonderfully expressive Saint-Estèphe. Readers should expect a bold, savory wine driven by strong Cabernet Sauvignon accents and structure. Accordingly, the 2017 needs time to be at its very best. In 2017, the Grand Vin contains an unusually high amount of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), much of which was able to hang until early October, with 34% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Winemaker Fabrice Bacquey opted to reduce exposure to oxygen during fermentation with the goal of maintaining as much freshness in the fruit as possible. I continue to be deeply impressed with the work Bacquey, Estate Manager Véronique Dausse and consulting winemaker Michel Rolland have done at Phélan over the last few years. Château Sociando-Mallet Château Sociando-Mallet is located in the Haut-Médoc, in the commune of SaintSeurin-de-Cadourne. The 57 hectares of vineyards are planted in 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. Owned for the last 20 years by Jean Gautreau, the quality here has been on the up ever since he took the helm.

"One of the most iconic names in Haut-Médoc, this has depth, linearity and good fruit. It is wellhandled, with slatey minerality providing a springboard for the cassis fruits, but finishes a little too rapidly. Château Ferrière Founded by Gabriel Ferrière, a member of the royal court in the 18th Century, the history runs deep in this Margaux property. It was classified Third Growth in the 1855 classification round-up, and didn’t leave Ferrier hands until 1914. A succession of owners later, it has ended up with the Villars family. At 12 hectares, Ferrière is one of the smallest of the 1855 Classified Growths, with a vine mix of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. Currently managing the vineyard and winemaking activities, Claire Villars Lurton is at the beginnings of a dedicated programme to restore this unique gravel and limestone property, with a parcel at the heart of the Margaux village, to its original splendour.

Château Labégorce Château Labegorce dates back to the Grosse family in the 14th century. It was the one of the largest estates in the region for many years. The current Château was built in 1821. Château Labegorce is currently managed by Nathalie, who is the daughter of Hubert Perrodo who brought the estate in 1989. Perrodo is also behind L’Abbé Gorsse de Gorsse and Labégorce Zédé. Located in the Margauz commune in the Médoc region, the estates vineyard was planted on gravelly terrain. The estate grows about 50% Cabernet Sauvignon. It also grows Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Château Malescot St Exupéry This historic 28-hectare estate is named for Simon Malescot, Louis XIV’s Attorney General, who purchased it in 1697, and Comte Jean-Baptiste de Saint-Exupéry, who owned it between 1827 and 1853. Although ranked as Third Growth in the historic 1855 Classification, its halo slipped somewhat as it descended into dilapidation. Enter the Zuger family in 1955, just in time to avert disaster, steering the château away from the brink and back into contention, and worthy once more of its elevated grading. After 30 years of devotion the Zugers are still in play, with owner Jean-Luc Zuger overseeing a meteoric rise in quality over recent years.

The 2017 Malescot Saint Exupéry has really come together nicely over the course of its élevage. In this vintage, Malescot is a bit more fruity and less structured than it has been. The 2017 is a wine that keeps getting better each time I taste it, and that makes me very hopeful for the future; it will be interesting to see what happens here with aging, and, specifically, if a bit more structure emerges. Château Margaux One of the world’s greatest wine estates, Margaux has a history dating back almost eight hundred years. Ranked as only one of four wines to achieve Premier Cru (First Growth) status in the 1855 Classification, it is also the only Bordeaux property to share the name of the appellation itself. "Always 100% Sauvignon Blanc. But a complex blend of barrels. Nine months in barrel, 20–25% new oak. 40% of the crop went into this wine, the rest sold in bulk. Perfect conditions for the whites in 2017, according to estate manager Sébastien Vergne. They want the wine to be fat and creamy in the mouth but to keep the finish fresh and the hallmark scent of honeysuckle. Fermentation starts in tank, then the wine goes into barrel until a month before bottling. pH 3.1. Slightly higher alcohol than last year but also lower pH. Very scented, intense citrus but also finely floral. Really floral. Peachy. Full in the mouth and great acid tension leaving the mouth clean. A floral scent on the palate too but it is quite delicate. There's a gentle creaminess and a slight lees grip yet the intensity is fruit-driven. Château Palmer Château Palmer is perhaps the second most prestigious estate in Margaux. The name is undeniably English, Colonel Charles Palmer arriving in France with the army of the future Duke of Wellington in 1814 and purchasing the estate. Classified as a Third Growth in 1855, it has always been one of the most respected of the classified wines. The true golden era for Palmer is actually right now, with the wines produced since 2000 amongst the greatest ever seen here. The vines at Palmer have very deep roots, and are unusual in that the 47% Merlot is planted in gravel rather than the usual clay, perhaps contributing to its great elegance. There is also 47% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot, all to be farmed organically from 2014 onwards.

"Composed of 53% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Alter Ego de Palmer is deep garnet-purple in color and springs from the glass with vivacious black raspberries, black cherries and crushed blackcurrants notes plus hints of Sichuan pepper, menthol, pencil lead and cardamom. Medium-bodied, the palate is charged with energy, featuring expressive, bright black fruits and firm, fine-grained tannins, finishing long and lively. Some of the vineyards to the west of Margaux that go into Alter Ego got a bit of frost in 2017, but there were no frost issues for Palmer, and overall yields here were a respectable 38 hectoliters per hectare. This vintage marks the first time that the estate used all native yeasts for the fermentations. One of the wines of the vintage on the Left Bank, the 2017 Palmer is fresh and vibrant, with tons of energy. Veins of supporting salinity and floral overtones lend grace to the Grand Vin in 2017. I imagine Palmer will only blossom with a few years in bottle. Time in the glass brings out pretty notes of dark fruit, mocha, spice, leather and licorice, but overall, the 2017 is quite reticent, especially given what readers have come to expect here. The blend is 54% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot. Technical Director Thomas Duroux told me his team harvested all the fruit in nine days as opposed to the more typical 2-3 weeks. The 2017s were done with no SO2 at crush. Duroux stopped the pump overs early and favored gentle extractions. Both wines are in the 13-13.2 range of finished alcohol.Antonio Galloni 96+

Château Prieuré-Lichine Reflecting the Church’s long love affair with things vinous, Prieuré-Lichine was founded back in the 12th century by monks who used it to produce the vinos for their meals and religious ceremonies. The church hung in there until the French Revolution, when, in a ‘no-more wine-with-dinner’ moment, the estate was seized, divided and disposed of. The portion that became Prieuré-Lichine received a Fourth Growth classification in 1855, and a much-neglected 11ha property was acquired in 1951 by Alexis Lichine (a. k.a. ‘the Pope of Wine’), who with much patient dedication restored vineyards and cellars to their former status. Lichine, along with a consortium that included Count de Lur-Saluces of Châ teau d’Yquem, invested heavily and seriously expanded the estate that now covers 78 hectares. It was sold to the Groupe Ballande in 1999, and they astutely employed the ubiquitous Stéphane Derenoncourt as their consulting oenologist. God knows how he fits it all in; with his name everywhere, there must, by now, almost be more pies in play than available fingers.

Château Rauzan-Ségla This 66-hectare property was once part of a much larger holding that existed in the mid17th Century. By the time of the 1855 Classification it had been carved up into four pieces, that included Rauzan-Ségla, thanks to some ‘family issues’ (we all know that story, don’t we?). This is Second Growth status, and supposedly once a favourite tipple of Thomas Jefferson. Yes, that one. Chanel took charge in 1994. They put John Kolasa in charge as Managing Director, which turned out to be a very good move. Sustainable practices, plot by plot management, hand harvesting and double sorting prior to fermentation have all contributed to an elevation in quality. The gravel-based soils are planted in 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, and1.5% apiece of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. This is a Margaux designed to age gracefully, rich, tannic and harmonious, and with great concentration. The wines are not made for early drinking. The recent vintages are amongst the finest wines in the estate’s history.

It is a Cru Bourgeois, located close to the best part of St Estephe, and has 41 hectares under vine. Château Chasse-Spleen Situated in the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation of Bordeaux, this is an estate widely considered to be the leading wine of the area and easily of Cru-Classé standard. Two of their more distinguished visitors in the past have been Byron and Baudelaire. At 100 hectares they are on the large side, and planting is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. There is, too, a small portion set aside for the production of a white Bordeaux. Chasse-Spleen still adhere to traditional practices, with no filtering employed. A great value, classic Médoc, the wines are often tannic in their youth, but age gracefully and drink well after 6-8 years in the bottle.

Château Potensac Château Potensac is one of the three estates owned by the Delon family, with the other two being Château Leoville Las Cases in Saint Julien and Château Nenin in Pomerol. This estate has always been handed down by women in the family. Château Potensac is currently owned by Jean-Hubert Delon, who inherited the estate from his grandmother. Château Potensac is located on a high point in North Medoc. The vineyard is over 84 hectares, on mainly hilly mounds with a limestone subsoil covered with clay and gravel. Château Clerc-Milon Located in the northern part of the Pauillac appellation, Clerc-Milon is one of eighteen Cinquièmes Crus (Fifth Growths) and faces Château Lafite Rothschild across the Route des Châteaux. Having become increasingly fragmented through sell-offs, it was acquired in 1970 by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, of Mouton Rothschild fame, as a doup with great potential, and he immediately set about renovating the estate, constructing a new vat house and weaving his well documented magic on the château’s imagery. The vat house is the first in Bordeaux to claim High Environmental Quality certification. The 45-hectare vineyard is planted in 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% of Carménère, the latter consisting of vines that were planted back in 1947. Clerc-Milon is now making the best wines in its history, beguiling, classically-styled expressions of currant, blackberry and spice, and can boast an outstanding run of recent vintages.

Château d’Armailhac This high quality, 69-hectare Fifth Growth estate in Pauillac was once part of the mighty Mouton Rothschild, and is indeed owned by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild. The name comes from one of its first owners, Dominique d’Armailhacq, and by 1740 the wine was being marketed as Mouton d’Armailhacq. Debt eventually buried the d’Armailhacq family, and with their château remaining unfinished, it was quite possibly the construction costs that put them out of business. Whatever the reason, they flicked it off to the Ferrand family, and in 1933, a young Baron Philippe de Rothschild snapped it up from the Ferrands on his way to glory. The gravel, clay and limestone soils of the property are today planted in 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, with some of the oldest vines in the Médoc found here.

Part of the Mouton-Rothschild family of Châteaux, while in 2017 there was no frost at Mouton, there was just a little at d’Armailhac. Winemaker Philippe Dhalluin noted that the drought at the beginning of the growing season ensured that the bunches consisted of many small berries. In fact, the Merlot was a bit stressed and suffered a little, thus Dhalluin felt it was more of a Cabernet year here in Pauillac. Yields are down on 2016 only by about 10%. Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste Derived from the Latin for hill, the name Grand-Puy describes this vineyard’s valuable raised site overlooking Pauillac. Lacoste is the name of the family who owned the property from the beginning of the 18th Century to the end of the 19th. Hit hard by the disaster that phylloxera brought to Bordeaux, the Lacostes were eventually forced to sell up. A string of owners led in time to Raymond Dupin, a gentleman, so it is said, with a taste for the finer (read decadent) things in life, who purchased the property in 1930. Dupin passed Grand-Puy-Lacoste on to the Borie family in 1978, just prior to his death, and they remain in charge to this day. The man behind the estate’s current resurgence is François-Xavier Borie, who has put his money where his mouth is and completely renovated the vineyards, winemaking facilities and cellars. The vine mix is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, on 55 hectares. The style is classic Pauillac: succulent and concentrated with a strong tannic presence and the ability to age gracefully.

Chateau Haut Bages The LIBERAL family had run the estate since the early XVIII th century. Then as wine brokers from father to son, they would sell most of the crops to the Netherlands and Belgium. Thanks to their name being next to that of the place, they were often invited to sit at the round tables of the political parties by the same name all over the world. As time passed, those fine connoisseurs of wine collected the best soils of the Pauillac area. That is why half of the vineyard of this 1855 fifth classified growth is next to Château Latour and the other half is behind Château Pichon Baron, located on the higher part of the place called « Bages », a large plateau south of Pauillac.

Château Haut-Bages-Libéral The name Haut-Bages-Libéral is derived from both the estate's location and its historical owner, with Haut-Bages referring to its position at the top of the Bages plateau between Pauillac and Saint-Julien, and Libéral alluding to the founding family who owned the Fifth Growth estate from the 18th Century and nurtured it successfully for generations. This high position within Pauillac is one of the better elevations of deep gravels, with its main vineyard neighbouring Château Latour. Current owner is Claire Villars Lurton, who has brought the winemaking facilities into the modern era and introduced a more environmentally friendly programme to the vineyards. The vine breakdown is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and Villars Lurtan’s goal is a quality-driven return to this venerable estate’s former prestigious position.

Château Haut-Batailley Château Haut-Batailley is an offshoot of the neighbouring Château Batailley. Owned since the 1920’s by the Borie family, the Fifth Growth Haut-Batailley belonged to the Saint-Martins in the 18th Century and the Guestiers in the 19th Century. It is currently managed by François-Xavier Borie and his daughter Emiline, who work their 22-hectare vineyard with a mix of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The estate has no château building, and the wines are vinified at Château DucruBeaucaillou, which is managed by another branch of the Borie family. Fresh and fruity on the palate, with age the wine becomes smooth and supple.

Château Lafite Rothschild Château Lafite Rothschild is located at the northern tip of the Pauillac appellation, sitting in the shadow of Saint-Éstephe’s Cos d’Estournel. Though it is not certain exactly when vines were first planted at Lafite, its history dates back to medieval times. Classified in the 1855 classification as a First Growth, Lafite was considered at the time to be the top of that group, its remarkably consistent performance over the ensuing years ensuring that reputation has remained unchallenged. The 100-hectare property is planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon. Lafite go to extreme lengths to ensure quality: only around a third of the crop ends up in the Grand Vin, and the wine is matured in barrels produced by Lafite in their own cooperage. Château Lynch-Bages Arguably the most popular of all the eighteen Fifth Growths, Lynch Bages dates back to the 15th Century. Thomas Lynch was a descendent of the Tribe of Galway and inherited the estate through his wife in 1749. The golden era started in 1934 when it arrives in the hands of Jean-Charles Cazes, who immediately began to lift the quality. His grandson, Jean-Michel Cazes, took over in 1973, modernizing the estate and becoming a tireless global promoter of Bordeaux. Located just outside the town of Pauillac, the large 100-hectare vineyard sits on a gravel ridge overlooking the Gironde estuary. Plantings are 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, with an average vine age of around 30 years. Château Lynch-Moussas Classified as a Fifth Growth property in 1855, Lynch-Moussas was originally a very large estate owned by the Irish Lynch family. It was eventually split into two halves, the other becoming Château Lynch-Bages, with Lynch-Moussas retaining the original building. The terroir is typical of Pauillac, consisting mostly of gravel over a limestone subsoil. The 60-hectare vineyard is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot. The current expressions are well known for their deep, dark colour and their red-fruit nose. Château Mouton Rothschild Mouton Rothschild was established in Pauillac in 1853, but their path to greatness started when a young Baron Philippe de Rothschild gained control of the property in the 1920’s and began shaking things up in Bordeaux, changing the way wine was produced there. He was the first to bottle all his wine on the estate, allowing control over the selling process, and he introduced an unmatched level of sophistication to his branding. Artists to have created labels for Mouton Rothschild include Miró, Chagall, Braque and Picasso. Awarded Second Growth status in the original 1855 Classification, the Baron made it his mission to achieve First Growth status, something he achieved, against all odds, in 1973. Château Pichon-Longueville Baron Commonly referred to as Pichon Baron, this property began life as part of the same estate as Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, but was split apart in 1850 when the then owner, 90-year-old Baron Joseph de Pichon-Longueville died and bequeathed the property equally between his five children, the women receiving Pichon Lalande and the men what would become Pichon Baron. It remained in family hands right through to 1933, but following a difficult period through the 1960’s and 70’s, it was purchased by the AXA insurance group who, with the resources at their disposal, immediately began to turn things around, producing stunning 1989 and 1990 vintages. The wines have continued to improve to the point where they are now some of the most sought-after in Bordeaux. Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Commonly referred to as Pichon Lalande, this famous Second Growth wine is quintessential Pauillac for many consumers, voluptuously textured, with complex layers of fruit and a classic earthy perfume. Once part of the larger Pichon estate, it was split apart in 1850 when the then owner, 90-year-old Baron Joseph de Pichon-Longueville died and bequeathed the property equally between his five children, the women receiving Pichon Lalande and the men what would become Pichon-Longueville Baron. Pichon Lalande stayed in family hands for over 250 years until it was sold to Champagne giants Louis Roederer in 2007. A hugely expensive renovation then took place, both in the winery and in the vineyard. 67 hectares are planted in 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. The estate is managed sustainably, with half of the vineyard farmed organically. They are also experimenting with bioydnamics.

Chateau Pontet Canet Ranked as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification, Pontet-Canet has seen a meteoric rise in quality in recent years, and is now arguably the most popular wine in Pauillac. Over three centuries it has been owned by only three families, the latest being the Tesserons, who acquired it in 1975. Alfred Tesseron took the reins in 1994, and under his guidance, the quality has risen to the point where they are producing wines at the level of the 'Super Seconds', and in some vintages, they are the equal of the First Growths, which is indeed an amazing achievement. After taking over, Alfred moved to sustainable farming techniques on a parcel by parcel basis, and then in 2004 began to institute biodynamics. Everything is done by hand, and the entire vineyard will eventually be worked with horses in the traditional manner.

Château Haut-Brion Regarded as one of the world’s greatest wines for around 600 years, Haut-Brion was the only First Growth outside of the Médoc in the 1855 Classification. Grapes are thought to have been grown here since Roman times, and it can boast the first-ever professional wine review, by Samuel Pepys in 1663. Lauded by Thomas Jefferson in 1787, it was the earliest recorded First Growth to be imported to the United States. The estate was eventually purchased by another American, New York Financier Clarence Dillon, in 1935, and it remains in Dillon family hands to this day. The elevated vineyard consists of deep gravels with a high clay and mineral content, planted in 45% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. They also produce one of the greatest and most expensive dry white wines in the world from 63% Semillion and 37% Sauvignon Blanc. Château Pape Clément Few great wines can boast seven centuries of history and trace their origins back to a pope, but this one can. Elected Supreme Pontiff in 1305, during the reign of King Philip the Handsome (a moniker no doubt initiated by Philip himself), Clement V gave his name to the estate, having, it’s said, a strong interest in wine, whatever that means. The Pope was very hands-on, and something of an innovator as well; his was the first estate in Bordeaux, for instance, to destem the entire crop by hand. When Clement moved the papal court to Avignon, he gave his Bordeaux vineyards to the Archbishop of Bordeaux, from which time every Archbishop followed the vinous techniques and teachings of Bishop Clement. The estate was eventually sold to the Montagne family in 1939, and they are still in charge today, with the present owner, Bernard Magrez, doing his utmost to keep standards at papal heights. Combining the traditional with state-ofthe-art, Pape Clément is produced to the highest standards, with chemical weed killers abandoned in favour of ploughing.

Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte This Pessac-Léognan estate has a refined reputation as ‘the quintessential Graves’. Its history stretches back over 800 years to the Crusades, with vines planted in 1365 on a gravelly plateau known as Lafitte. George Smith purchased the Graves estate in 1720, adding his name to the property. Current owners are the Cathiard family, who instigated manual harvesting and sorting regimes where only the best grapes are utilised, introducing, too, their own cooperage from where they produce 70% of their own barrels. A well-judged combination of new and old, the winery is ultra-modern, while the vineyard is ploughed using horses. The Cathiards have taken the estate from a degree of vinous mediocrity to its current position near the top of the pecking order. The farming is sustainable and organic, with a heavy slant towards biodynamics, producing fantastic smoky wines from 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. They also make a stunning dry white from 60-year-old vines of 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Sauvignon Gris and 5% Sémillon.

Château Bourgneuf This Right Bank estate is situated in the heart of the prestigious Pomerol appellation, spread over almost 9 hectares in one unique holding. It is, indeed, one of the oldest family-owned properties there, having been in the hands of the Vayron family since 1821 and managed by them now for eight generations. The vines are pretty well established too, the average age 40 years, with one parcel over 70. The varietal mix is 90% Merlot to 10% Cabernet Franc, and the main section - their best terroir - almost exclusively clay. Bourgneuf produces a fairly traditional, lighter, rustic style of Pomerol. Château Clinet Château Clinet is a very small property located in Bordeaux’ Right Bank appellation of Pomerol, positioned on the top of its famous plateau. A fortuitous marriage in the 1980’s put vintner Jean-Michel Arcaute at the helm, and with the assistance of oenologist Michel Rolland, the estate’s quality has vaulted to match the lofty heights of the likes of Pétrus, Lafleur and Le Pin. The tiny 9-hectare vineyard is predominantly Merlot. One of Pomerol’s finest, this is a must-have for serious collectors. Château Gazin At 26 hectares one of Pomerol’s larger properties, Gazin dates back to 1772 and is a single parcel on the upper part of the legendary Pomerol plateau. They share a border with Pétrus and have in the past sold part of their property to that venerable estate. Gazin was once the property of the Knights of the Templars, and current owners, the Bailliencourt family, have their own rich history tracing back to 1214 and an association with the then King of France, Philippe-Auguste. The Bailliencourts have been in residence at Gazin itself since 1946. Vine composition is 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc and the winemaking facilities were upgraded in 1996.

Château Hosanna Pomerol’s Château Hosanna was originally part of the huge Certan estate that belonged to the de May family before the French Revolution. This was split up into Vieux Château Certan, Certan-de-May and Certan-Giraud. The Giraud family sold the latter estate to Christian Moueix in 1999; Moueix intended to use the name Château Certan, but decided on the name Hosanna after encountering objections from Certande-May. Only the best fruit from the oldest vines of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc is used to produce Hosanna, with the remainder sold as Château Certan Marzelle. Château La Fleur-Pétrus Situated a stone’s throw from Chateau Pétrus and adjacent to Lafleur, this vineyard lies on the north-eastern edge of the high plateau of Pomerol, where the soil involves large gravels with very little of the blue clay found in its high-profile neighbours. The château was built in 1782 and has had a strong reputation since the late 1800’s. It was sold to the Moueix family, owners of Chateau Pétrus, in 1953, just in time for the decimating Pomerol frost of 1956, after which it was completely replanted with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Since then the quality has headed steadily upwards and there is no doubt that recent vintages are the finest ever produced here.

Château Lafleur Château Lafleur is a tiny property with a mere 4.5 hectares of vineyard on Pomerol’s exalted plateau. It rivals Pomerol superstar, Château Pétrus in both quality and price, yet it remains somewhat under the radar, unlike its more famous compatriot. The miniscule quantity produced here makes it a very rare gem, more so than even the Pétrus. The vineyard is planted fairly evenly between Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with the old vine Cabernet Franc one of the hallmarks of this great wine. Château Lagrange “The history of Lagrange dates back to 1796, when it was acquired by Count Jean Valère Cabarrus, Napoleon’s Finance Minister in Spain. He expanded the estate by purchasing numerous vineyards plots and remained the owner until 1825. Château Lagrange was classified a third growth in 1855. In 1983, the Suntory group, the leading Japanese wine and spirits firm, acquired Lagrange and invested heavily in a spectacular renovation. Château Pétrus No classification here, folks, it’s Pomerol; but who needs it when you’re Pétrus, one of the most famous (and expensive) wines in the world. In the 19th Century it was considered nothing more than a lunch-time claret by the Poms, but oh, how things have changed. Its great age is said to have begun at the end of WWII, having been quietly acquired from the founding Arnaud family share by share, by hotel magnate Mme. Loubat, a woman with a reputation for formidable dedication to quality. With the astute Jean-Pierre Moueix acquiring exclusive selling rights at the same time, it was the beginning of a prosperous partnership. Pétrus was served at the wedding of England’s Elizabeth and Philip, and its fame grew in the US in the 1960’s (President Kennedy was not immune to its charms). Owned outright by the Moueix family since 1969, the estate sits atop the Pomerol plateau on an iron-rich clay terroir unlike any other. Deceptively alluring a few months after bottling, the 2017 Petrus is attractive and nuanced, and yet I get the impression it is going through a rather awkward stage. Floral and blood orange overtones add freshness and inner perfume to a Petrus that will age more on finesse than power. Olivier Berrouet opted for longer skin contact than normal, about 30 days, with pumpovers of one volume of wine per day at the beginning of fermentation. Malolactic fermentation took place in steel. Vieux Château Certan Known to insiders as VCC, the origins are estimated to be around 1770, when it was the property of the Demay family. At this time, VCC was considered to be the leading estate of the region, and today it is once again back in the top echelon. The land was divided after the French Revolution into the various Certan estates, and in 1924 was sold to the Belgian Merchant, Georges Thienpont. It has remained with the Thienpont family ever since. Georges himself came up with the astute idea of placing the now famous pink capsules on the bottles, so he could see if collectors were buying his wine when he visited their cellars. VCC sits on the top of the Pomerol plateau across the street from Certan de May and down the road from Pétrus. The vineyard is planted with 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, with a very old average vine age of 50 years. This is one of the most elegant Pomerols, with great richness and silky textures, yet the style depends on the vintage, with some years having a majority percentage of Cabernet Franc, giving it a more structured feel.

Château Ausone Château Ausone produces one of the most sought-after wines in Bordeaux. Ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé A, it sits, along with Château Cheval Blanc, at the top of the classification of Saint-Émilion. It is also the smallest of Bordeaux' famous 'big eight' wines. Its vineyards are perched on the limestone slopes that surround the ancient walled town and are planted in 50% Cabernet Franc, 50% Merlot. At around 2,000 cases, production at Ausone is, it can be said, tiny. Named after the 4th Century poet Ausonius, this is a property with medieval historical significance and a glowing reputation for wines with outstanding longevity and poise. The 2017 Chapelle d’Ausone has a lucid ruby hue. The nose is very succinct, nothing ostentatious, just tightly wound red and black fruit, beautifully integrated new oak (100%) with hints of crushed violet that become more prominent with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, well judged acidity, quite linear and focused. An almost pixelated finish possesses the texture and allure of a fine Vosne-Romanée. The 2017 Ausone is incredibly precise and sculpted, but also tightly wound in the early going - not that that will be a problem for readers who own it and will cellar it. Wild flowers, mint, blood orange and crushed rocks are some of the nuances that open up in the glass, but the 2017 is not in any mood to show all of its cards. Vertical, rich and explosive with tons of inner energy, the 2017 is a truly regal wine, but it also needs a number of years to be at its very finest. Château Bélair Monange This is a very old estate. How old? Try the 1300’s. Bélair was purchased by its rather famous neighbour Château Ausone in 1916; Ausone did the makeover and transformed it from vineyard to winery. It was sometimes opined, however, that it never quite lived up to its potential. In 2008, Christian Moueix - riding in on Château Pétrus glory purchased the estate and renamed it Bélair-Monange in honour of his grandmother, Anne-Adèle Monange. In 2012, Moueix merged the neighbouring Château Magdelaine into Bélair-Monange. He believes this 12-hectare vineyard has the finest terroir in Saint-Émilion, and aspires to make it one of Bordeaux’ greatest wines. With Moueix in charge, quality has, somewhat predictably, soared; the wine is already fleshier and more concentrated than previously, with an incredible elegance on the palate and the only direction in sight upwards.

The 2017 Bélair-Monange was so impressive out of barrel and now in bottle, I see no reason to alter my appreciation. It has a very intense bouquet, one that is reassuringly complex, especially in context of what was a rather ordinary growing season with copious red cherries, boysenberry, hints of iodine and a light terracotta scent. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins that are surprisingly rigid at the moment, suggesting that this will be a long term Saint-Émilion. There is a beguiling sense of symmetry, very mineral-driven towards the finish that has impressive sapidity. This comes highly recommended although it deserves five or six years in bottle. Château Canon Starting life as part of the Clos St-Martin vineyard, this Saint-Émilion estate was acquired in 1760 by Monsieur Jacques Kanon, thanks to the substantial profits he made as a privateer capturing English ships for King Louis XV. For ‘privateer’ read pirate; apparently, sometimes, crime does pay. Kanon expanded his holding outwards (did he, we wonder, capture the surrounding vineyards too?) before selling it to a Bordeaux wine merchant , Raymond Fontémoing, for a tidy sum. From there it passed to the Fournier family, who ploughed much time and money into the estate and its vineyards. In 1996 it passed to Chanel. They, too, have undertaken extensive renovation and replanting. The 32 hectares are made up of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, with the average vine age now close to 30 years following all the ferocious replanting. Classified a Premier Grand Cru Classé, Château Canon is widely recognised as a distinguished, superlative wine; ripe, mineral and opulent, a wine for those with the patience to wait.

Château Cheval Blanc The ‘Castle of the White Horse’ sits at the very peak of the Saint-Émilion classification, from where they create one of the world’s finest wines. Founded in 1832, Cheval Blanc has been at the forefront of vineyard management for almost 200 years, installing a vast network of drains in 1860 and in 2011 building the most modern winemaking and cellaring facility in the appellation at a cost of around $20M. They were purchased in 2009 by LVMH for a reputed 15 million euros per hectare, which would make them the most expensive estate in all of Bordeaux. Perched on the border with Pomerol, the Premier Grand Cru Classé A estate has a unique mix of 58% Cabernet Franc and 42% Merlot, with some of the vines close to 100 years old. The beauty of Cheval Blanc can be found in the complex and powerful perfume entwining textures that can feel as sensual as silk and as soft as velvet. The wine is incredibly opulent, yet light on its feet. Yes, you can drink it young, but really, it is one of the longest-lived Bordeaux wines being produced, so try to be patient. CHATEAU CHEVAL BLANC 1ER GRAND CRU CLASSE A

Cheval Blanc was significantly affected by the frost. They lost around 30% of the vineyard, mainly on clay soils, and it was mainly Cabernet Franc situated in the “dip or lower-lying part of the vineyard." This year is therefore unique, because there is a bit more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend this year and more of a component from the gravel soils. On the plus side, the berries were small, and there is a high quantity of tannins. Winemaker Pierre Olivier informed me that “the late season was important to ripen the huge quantity of tannins.” Cheval Blanc finished picking on October 11th, equating to a vast picking window. In 2017, 8% of total production went into Petit Cheval and 15% of the estate’s fruit was sold in bulk, while 77% of production went into Cheval Blanc. Château Haut-Brisson Situated in Saint-Émilion, Haut-Brisson was purchased by Peter Kwok in 1997. Kwok’s agenda was to elevate the quality of the estate’s output, and he immediately set about expanding the holding from 8 hectares to 12.77 hectares, introduced a small-production high-end offering from the best parcels and barrels, and moved to organic viticulture (certified in 2010). The blend is 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, and the vines are close to 30 years old. Today Château Haut-Brisson is managed by Kwok’s daughter Elaine. These attractively priced, rich, fruity wines deserve attention from consumers looking for good value.

Château La Confession The debut vintage in Saint-Émilion for La Confession and new owner-winemaker Jean Philippe Janoueix was in 2001, but it was not really until the 2005 vintage that he really started to hit his straps. Janoueix’s winemaking involves careful handling and he has some rather novel ideas that he has experimented with, such as warming the barrels before placing wine in them, so as not to ‘shock’ the grapes and to allow for gentle extraction. The 7.5-hectare estate grows Merlot and Cabernet Franc with a little bit of Cabernet Sauvignon, all planted on clay, chalk and siliceous soils. On average the vines are around 40-plus years old. Janoueix produces wines that are wonderfully expressive, seductively captivating.

Château La Serre Château La Serre is located just outside the village of Saint-Émilion. La Serre takes its name from its south-facing position ( La Serre can be translated as ‘greenhouse’ in reference the property’s excellent sun exposure). The château was erected in the 17th Century and procured in the 1950’s by the d’Arfeuille family, who are still in residence today. The soil is a combination of chalk, clay and sand and supports a vine mix of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. The wines are modestly priced, so they offer excellent value in a good vintage. Fresh and clean in style, their aging potential is around 6-10 years.

Château Pavie Macquin Pavie Macquin took its name from founder Albert Macquin, a specialist in grafting and root stocks who was instrumental in saving not only Saint-Émilion, but much of Bordeaux from the predations of the Phylloxera epidemic that destroyed so much of France’s vinous heritage. It was Macquin’s idea to graft European vines onto American root stocks, and thus save the day. Owned by the Corre-Maquin family, the estate was producing below-par wines until the introduction in the 1990’s of the A-team of Stéphane Derenoncourt and Nicolas Thienpont who, as elsewhere, have ridden into town and turned things around. The 15-hectare vineyard possesses a complex terroir consisting of nine different soil types, and the 40-year-old vines are 85% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. Farming is undertaken using organic and sustainable principles and the winemaking facilities have undergone a complete makeover. These days undeniably one of the stars of the Saint-Émilion firmament, the Pavie-Macquin wines are strong, full bodied and generous.

Château Troplong Mondot The Premier Grand Cru Classé Troplong Mondot started life as Domaine de Mondot, its wine one of the most sought-after in Saint-Émilion. French peer and lawyer of note, Raymond Troplong, purchased the estate in 1850 and hence the name we have today. It has been in the hands of the Valette family since 1936. These days there is no more machine harvesting, yields are reduced and fastidious sorting has become a priority, along with temperature-controlled vats and a higher percentage of new French oak. Château Calon-Ségur Situated in Saint-Estèphe, this estate stretches all the way back to 1147, when it was owned by Monseigneur de Calon, a bishop, no less. Perhaps not so surprising when one considers the level of intimacy that has long existed between the Church and the vine. Eventually the property came to be owned by Nicolas Alexandre, marquis de Segur and owner of Châteaux Latour and Lafite. The iconic heart on the label comes from his famous quote, ‘I make my wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon.’ One of the few walled-in vineyards to be found in Bordeaux, the estate was sold recently to a large French Insurance company, with the Moueix family, owners of Château Pétrus, also taking a stake. There has been extensive renovation of the winemaking facilities, along with a replanting programme to increase the vine density and boost the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. The style of Calon-Ségur is masculine and sturdy, the structure tannic, textural and traditional in approach. .

Château Cos d’Estournel Often referred to as a Super Second (Growth), with a long and distinguished history in the Saint-Estèphe appellation. This is largely due to M. Gaspard d’Estournel, the ‘Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe’ who founded the estate in 1811. It wasn’t long before the château was well-known to wine lovers all over the world, not least because of its famous pagoda design, built to celebrate the wine’s presence in India. Recently a complete renovation of Cos d’Estournel took place across the whole business. While Cos d’Estournel may not have been as consistent as it could have been in the past, it is now making one of the most exciting wines in modern-day Bordeaux. Château Lafon-Rochet Château Lafon-Rochet in Saint-Estèphe dates back to the middle of the 17th Century, and like most producers in Bordeaux it was named after the owners of the time. Today it is owned by the Tesseron family and run by Basile Tesseron. Lafon-Rochet was awarded Fourth Growth status in 1855, and after a slump in quality in the 1970’s, it has improved vastly and is worthy once again of its status. The 45 hectares of vineyards are in almost one single parcel with three soil types - limestone, marl and clay - and is planted in 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

Bottled at the end of April, Basile Tesseron told me that the 2017 Lafon-Rochet underwent a very light pressing with slow pumping over and no pigeage or délestage since the fruit was fragile. Around 35% of the production was lost due to frost, mainly on the western flank of the vineyard. It offers more red fruit on the nose compared to some of its Saint-Estèphe neighbors, raspberry and crushed strawberry intermixed with light Cuban cigar aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with light, off-dry tannins, a little more black fruit than on the nose. It has a fleshy, rather conservative, light finish with tobacco notes lingering on the aftertaste. Chateau Meyney Chateau Meyney is one of the oldest estates in the Medoc. In 1662, it was a Convent mentioned in records under the names Couvent des Feuillants or Prieure des Couleys. Today, the estate stretches over some of the best hilltops above the Gironde Estuary. The river lying alongside the first rows of vines makes for a majestic, serene landscape. The estate belonged to the Luetkens family for several generations, and was then acquired by Mr Desire Cordier in 1919. In 2004, CA Grands Crus, a subsidiary of the Groupe Credit Agricole, acquired Chateau Meyney, with a determination to strengthen the potential of this outstanding cru. Château Montrose One of the few estates in Bordeaux not named after an original owner, according to local legend it was the reference by local sailors to the hills covered in pink heather that inspired this name. Montrose had been owned by the Charmoule family since 1896 until it was sold in 2006 to the Bouygues brothers. The new owners instigated an intensive renovation project that was completed in time for the 2013 harvest. One of the key components was sustainability, to ensure that Montrose was as green and environmentally conscious as possible. The 94-hectare vineyard has a terroir of gravel, typical of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, with sand and some clay. The vineyard is planted in 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, with an average vine age of 40 years. On average, the vines reach between 40 and 60 years of age before they are replaced, and some of the oldest date back to 1933. Château Montrose is a powerful Bordeaux, massive dense and masculine, and can age and evolve for decades.

Château Branaire-Ducru We’re on the Left Bank, in the appellation of Saint-Julien, with Château BranaireDucru’s beginnings as far back as 1680, and its main wine classified as one of the ten Fourth Growths in the Official Classification of 1855. Since purchasing Branaire-Ducru in 1988 from the Tapie family, owner Patrick Maroteaux has done extensive work on all aspects of the property, including the introduction of a state-of-the-art, gravity operated cellar (the first in Bordeaux). He is credited with getting Branaire-Ducru back on track, introducing more depth and concentration to what was already an elegant wine. He was ably assisted by Philippe Dhalluin, who left in 2004 to take over the winemaking duties at Château Mouton Rothschild. Château Gloria Gloria is something of a new kid on the Bordeaux block, comparatively speaking, established as recently as 1939 by Henri Martin, who had become weary of making barrels and decided he wanted to fill them instead. Although a cooper by trade, like his dad, Henri was also the grandson of the cellarmaster at Château Gruard-Larose, and his family had been intimately associated with the vineyards and cellars of Saint-Julien, in one capacity or another, for around three centuries. Destiny called. Gloria is a patchwork of parcels scattered throughout the classified growth vineyards. Today, the estate is managed be Henri’s daughter Françoise, her husband Jean-Louis Triaud and their children, Vanessa and Jean. They operate on 50 hectares consisting of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, turning out a lighter style of Saint-Julien that is price-friendly and made for earlier drinking. Château Léoville Barton Château Léoville Barton in reality has no château, with the wines made at their sister property, Langoa Barton (although with their differing locations, the wines are not the same). In 1826, Langoa Barton’s owner, Hugh Barton purchased a portion of SaintJulien’s large Léoville estate and created Château Léoville Barton. The Second Growth Grand Cru Classé property is still in Barton family hands, with the current generation firm believers in the importance of terroir. Here, it’s all about elegance, balance and finesse. The Bartons can trace their Bordeaux roots back as far as 1722, when Thomas Barton vacated Ireland for the Gallic lifestyle. Twice they have been forced to flee the country, once during the French Revolution and once during World War II. Leoville Barton is now the only château from the 1855 Classification that has the same family still in unbroken ownership from that time. Perhaps unsurprisingly, then, their winemaking methods lean towards the traditional, with the style and high tannin levels meaning these babies are not for early drinking.

Château Léoville Las Cases Château Léoville Las Cases is a Second Growth under the 1855 Classification. Like most Bordeaux producers, it has a long history that dates back to the 16th Century. A large estate, it was at one time considerably larger, encompassing both of the other Léoville vineyards, Léoville Poyferré and Léoville Barton. Today, the Delon family, headed by Jean Hubert Delon and his sister Geneviève d’Alton, own and manage the property. It is planted in 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Léoville Las Cases produces a very structured style, and in the top vintages it can take 20 years or more to develop and shed its tannic structure. However your patience will be rewarded with an expression that often resembles a First Growth Pauillac, yet is unique to the estate it comes from.

Château Léoville Poyferré One of the offspring of the division of Saint-Julien’s large Léoville estate, Léoville Poyferré came into existence in 1840 and was included among the Second Growths in the 1855 Classification. The Poyferré family kept the château until 1865, but had to sell due to the oidium crisis. The estate’s modern history begins in 1920 when it was purchased by the high-profile négociant family, the Cuveliers, with Didier Cuvelier taking the reins in 1979 and transforming Léoville Poyferré into one of the leading Great Growths. Château Talbot The Fourth Growth Grand Cru Classé Château Talbot inhabits some of Saint-Julien’s most highly-prized terroir, gravelly rises that are known for their excellent wines. Talbot is one of the Médoc’s oldest estates, as well as one of its most consistent, and its reputation remains high, thanks to the consistent procession of talented and experienced managers who have passed through its doors. The Cordiers, yet another négociant family, have run things there since the early 20th Century, with tradition and technical innovation both playing key roles in their approach. Respected wine consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt has also played a key role, as he has on so many other estates. The 104 hectares of vineyard consist of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. Talbot also produce a white wine, the only ones within the Saint-Julien appellation to do so.

Château de Rayne Vigneau Over 200 years ago, Château de Rayne Vigneau was said to be the second-best producer of Sauternes (surely a galling position to be in for a French winemaker). Only Château d’Yquem was considered to be its superior. Located directly next door to that legendary estate, Château de Rayne Vigneau resides upon a large 83.7 hectare property and is classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé. The terroir is sand, clay and gravel, although legend has it that there are gemstones (or at least semi-precious stones) scattered through them thar hills that account for the wine’s incredible golden hues. As long as they don’t stick in the throat, we’re fine with that. Using a blend of 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc vines, the wines are quite moderately priced for Sauternes and, since 2005, increasingly popular as the current owners have injected renewed impetus and upped the ante.

Château Doisy-Daëne Located in Barsac on the limestone plateau that sits between Barsac and Sauternes, Château Doisy-Daëne was classified in 1855 as Grand Cru Classé Second Growth. Four generations of the Dubourdieu family have overseen the impeccable quality that comes out of the estate, with the talented Denis Dubourdieu (professor of oenology at Bordeaux University, international fix-it man and consultant to many) now at the helm. Château Doisy-Védrines Château Doisy-Védrines was established in the nineteenth century as a joint venture. With thirty hectares of vineyard, it is the largest Château with 'Doisy' in its name. Some of the buildings at Château Doisy-Védrines date back to the sixteenth century. The Château is named after the Knights of Védrines who were the historic owners of the site. Planted in the vineyard are 82% Semillon, 15% Sauvignon and 3% Muscadelle. The vines are planted at a density of 6500 vines/ha. Château d’Yquem First Growth, unassailably top of the class and the stuff of legend, this, though the building itself is more of a fortified farmhouse than a château, really. The golden, ambrosial expression they produce is famed the world over. Of course all of this is brought about by serious attention to detail. The botrytised grapes are carefully removed with small secateurs so as not to damage the remaining fruit that is still bringing itself to, well, fruition, with each plot picked over an average of six times in a season. The grapes are pressed immediately upon arrival at the cellar, the juice put straight into new oak barrels and aged for 30 months, with regular topping and racking. Yquem’s philosophy has been the same for five centuries: to finesse nature and produce an average of just one glass of brilliance per vine. If the quality is not worthy of the estate’s reputation in a given year, it is not sold under the château name. Nine vintages were thus not marketed by Yquem in the 20th Century. The estate is these days managed by Pierre Lurton on behalf of the L.V.M.H. group.

Château Filhot Located in Sauternes, Filhot dates back to the mid-1600’s, with the château itself completed in 1709 by Romain de Filhot on one of the most attractive sites in Bordeaux. Since 1974, the Second Cru Classé Château Filhot has been managed by Count de Vaucelles and his son Gabriel, with the property undergoing a comprehensive restoration programme in 1995. The winemaking facilities were modernised, the old vinification replaced with temperature-controlled, stainless vats. The large, 62-hectare, gravel-based vineyard is planted in 60% Semillon, 36% Sauvignon Blanc and 4% Muscadelle. The wines are normally on the lighter side, refreshing in style, but they are, too, increasingly well made and reasonably priced.

Château Guiraud The Premier Grand Cru Classé Guiraud takes its name from the Bordeaux négociant Pierre Guiraud, who purchased the Sauternes property back in 1766. Owned these days by a consortium of interested parties, Guiraud is innovatively sustainable in its approach, and is the only First Growth from the 1855 Classification to be certified organic. There are 100 hectares under vine, the vineyards planted in 65% Semillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc. Château La Tour Blanche This Premier Grand Cru Classé Sauternes estate takes its name from its 18th Century founder, Jean Saint-Marc du Latourblanche, Treasurer General to Louis XIV. Its current tale begins, though, in the early 20th Century when then owner Daniel ‘Osiris’ Iffla bequeathed the château to the French Government, with the proviso that it be turned into a Wine School. After a period of Gallic humming and hawing, the Ministry of Agriculture agreed, and created the La Tour Blanche School of Viticulture and Oenology. Construction was completed in 1911. Despite its unusual status, Château La Tour Blanche is run by genuinely experienced Bordeaux personnel. The vineyard consists of 91 hectares planted in 83% Sémillon, 12% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Muscadelle. The terroir is a mix of gravel, clay, sand and limestone. This estate has soared in quality since the late eighties and is now one of the most consistent in the region.

This is such a pretty and expressive wine.Antonio Galloni 95 The 2017 La Tour Blanche has a very elegant and controlled bouquet, perhaps atypically for an estate that usually produces one of the more decadent Sauternes aromatics (not that I am complaining, for the record). The palate is very intense with layers of pure botrytized fruit, clear honey laced with orange zest and mandarin that segue into a dense, rich but fresh finish that is pure botrytized joy. Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey This Sauternes château is stunning visually, constructed in the 18th Century in a Byzantine-Hispanic style, with the outer wall and main gate dating as far back as the 13th Century, reflecting its days serving as a fortress. The name is a combination of the first known owners, the Peyraguey family, and the Laufauries, who purchased it in 1796. A Premier Grand Cru Classé, the 41 hectares of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle vines are tended with great care, with the soil ploughed and the use of chemical sprays increasingly reduced. In 2014 it was bought from the GDF Suez Company by Silvio Denz, the owner of numerous châteaux and a man known for his spare-no-expense approach.

The 2017 Lafaurie-Peyraguey builds on the promise that it showed out of barrel. It was picked from September 25 until October 12 via two tries at 13hl/ha, and matured in 33% new French oak. There is 132hl/ha residual sugar. The 2017 has a much more intense bouquet than the nascent 2018, and the copious scents of wild honey, heather, yellow flowers and hints of saffron are all very well defined. The balanced palate delivers a viscous opening, well-judged acidity and impressive volume in the mouth. I admire the focus and precision of this young Sauternes, in particular the spiciness that is amped up on the finish. Superb. Closed under DIAM 10 instead of natural cork. Château Rieussec Like many Bordeaux properties, Rieussec was confiscated during the French Revolution and auctioned off. After numerous changes in ownership, the estate ended up in the hands of Domaines Barons de Rothschild. They bought the property in 1984 in partnership with Albert Frère (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy). The following year, Rothschild director Charles Chevallier was placed in charge of managing Château Rieussec. The estate has one of the largest wineries in the appellation and boasts excellent terroir. It sits next to Château d’Yquem on the east and extends all the way to the border of Fargues and Sauternes, covering 92 hectares of gravel, sand, clay and limestone soils. The plantings are 90% Semillon, 7% Sauvignon Blanc and 3% Muscadelle, with an average vine age of 25 years. The property is close to the top of the Sauternes pyramid. With their intensely concentrated flavours and voluptuous textures, these are stunning wines that can age quite easily for decades.

The 2017 Rieussec was affected by the frost, losing around 15% of the production although, it was more located in parcels that are designated for the dry white R de Rieussec. Eric Kohler told me that it was a relatively rapid picking. It has around 125gm/L residual sugar. It has a clean but slightly distant bouquet, does not really exude the richness that you expect from Sauternes. The palate is mediumbodied and more promising than the nose: a viscous opening, quite spicy and slightly Auslese in style. The acidity is well balanced and it becomes increasingly lively towards the lychee and fennel-tinged finish, as if compensating for the nose.Neal Martin 92-94

Château Sigalas-Rabaud Created in Sauternes in 1660, at 14 hectares this is the smallest jewel in the first growth collection of 1855. It was purchased from the founding Rabaud family in the 1860’s by the Sigalas family, and six generations on they are still at the helm and going strong. The Sigalas-Rabaud is subtle and understated, a freshly elegant blend of 85% Sémillon and 15% Sauvignon Blanc with a marvellous capacity for aging beautifully.

Château Suduiraut Château Suduiraut and Sauternes go back to 1580, and they produce one of the great Premier Cru Classé sweet wines. Indeed, meticulous and uncompromising is what they are, with tailored plot selection, grape-by-grape harvesting and fastidious control over the fermentation of each individual barrel. The wine’s aging capacity is off the chart. The estate was significantly renovated in the 17th Century by the Count Blaise de Suduiraut, grandson of the founder, its stunning grounds and lakes courtesy of Le Nôtre, the designer of the gardens at Versailles. Like many Bordeaux estates, Suduiraut has passed through a number of hands. Losing its way somewhat in the 1940’s-1960’s, there has been a distinct return to form under the stewardship of insurance group AXA, who seem to have their fingers in a number of significant Bordeaux pies. With 92 hectares under vine, the wines are deeply opulent and highly collectible.

The 2017 Suduiraut was picked via three tries, with 75% of the crop picked in the second tries from 4 to 15 October. The harvest finished on 19 October, one of the last in Sauternes and after Yquem. “We were touched by the frost but not in the top terroir,” winemaker Pierre Montegut told me. It is matured in around 50% new oak. It has an expressive, harmonious bouquet with dried honey, white flowers and a touch of gripe water (a children’s medicine for those in the United States. I have been informed there is no equivalent on the other side of the Atlantic). The palate is well balanced with a viscous opening, well judged acidity, plenty of botrytized fruit with a long, lightly spiced finish that feels so fresh and vital. This is a superb Suduiraut from Pierre Montegut and his team.Neal Martin 94-96
