Welcome!

Welcome runners, walkers, and ruckers! I can’t tell you how ecstatic we are to welcome you all to Tulsa in person. As much fun as our virtual event was last year, there’s just nothing like in-person racing to get your blood pumping! Whether you’ve come from near or far, are used to hilly streets or flat country lanes, we’re so glad you’re in Tulsa. This year is a special one for the Williams Route 66 Marathon! Not only are we back in person, we’re also celebrating our 15th anniversary (for real this time, since we counted last year as 14.5 years). In celebration of our 15th anniversary, we’re rolling out a new medal series to lead up to our 20th anniversary. This year’s finisher medal features Buck Atom, the famous Route 66 space cowboy, as the first in our series celebrating Route 66 roadside attractions. While you’re in Tulsa, stop by and see him at Buck Atom’s Cosmic Curios at 1347 E 11th St and snap a photo with the real Buck and your medal! We might just feature your photo on one of our social media accounts. Of course, our return to in-person racing is possible thanks to some changes to make race weekend safe and enjoyable for everyone: • This year, we’ll be holding our Health and Fitness Expo outdoors to ensure there is plenty of ventilation. • We have limited registration numbers in order to allow for increased spacing in our corrals on race day and ask that runners respect social distancing as much as possible in the corrals. • Additionally, gear check for the marathon, half marathon, and marathon relay will be available in advance during Expo hours; gear bags will be returned to runners in the finisher’s area after the race. Gear check will also be available Sunday morning. I’d be remiss if I did not thank the City of Tulsa, our Medical Director, and local public health officials for their support in ensuring a safe return to in-person racing. Please also thank the volunteers who will be spending race weekend making sure that you have the weekend you’ve been waiting for since 2019! I’d also like to thank you, our participants, for coming back to Tulsa and partying with us in Oklahoma’s biggest block party. Our city has missed the sounds of runners and walkers pounding the pavement, and we’re so excited to have you back with us! HERE’S TO A HAPPY, HEALTHY RACE WEEKEND FOR ALL!

Legacy Runners:

The Route 66 Marathon’s Biggest Fans The Williams Route 66 Marathon is fortunate to have many participants who are coming back for their second, third, fourth, and more events to run with us, but our biggest fans have done something truly incredible. If you’re gearing up to run your first marathon, you’re probably thinking that finishing one sounds like enough of a challenge. How about finishing fourteen? Since the inaugural Route 66 Marathon in 2006, eleven participants have completed the marathon every single year, come rain, shine, injury, and life events. These participants have been with us since the very beginning, watching as the race has grown from a small local event of just 3,000 participants to an award-winning, world-renowned event that draws 12,000 participants from all 50 states and 10 countries today. Our eleven legacy runners all hail from Oklahoma and have been running for decades; some are also streakers at the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. You know how much dedication it takes to complete your training cycle; now imagine trying to do it year after year, no matter what happens. Through injuries, job changes, marriage, divorce, and more, the legacy runners keep chugging along, always determined to make it to the start (and finish) line, no matter what. Stephen Abernathy, age 48, comes to Tulsa each year from Midwest City, Oklahoma, and has completed 42 marathons, including 3 Ironmandistance triathlons. His favorite thing about the

Route 66 Marathon is the Center of the Universe Detour and the food and beer at the finish line. David Darcey, age 58, travels a bit farther to get to the race each year. A previous Tulsa resident, he now lives in Kamas, Utah and will be running his 50th marathon this year at Route 66. “My favorite thing about this race is the friends that I see on the course either running with me or spectating. Another favorite part of this run is that Williams is still the title sponsor. As someone who used to work at Williams and championed sponsorship of this run over the years, it makes me extremely happy to run this race. I have committed that I will continue to run this race as long as Williams is the title sponsor.” For local run leader Patty Powell, age 57, the Williams Route 66 Marathon is what fall is all about. She has lead a training group here in Tulsa for nearly a decade and helps prepares runners from Tulsa for the course she knows so well. Patty raced her 50th marathon at Route 66 in 2013 and plans to run her 100th marathon here in the coming years - this year’s Route 66 will be her 88th marathon. “I can’t really pick a favorite thing about the Route 66 Marathon!” Patty says. “I love the medal, the course (even though it’s tough), the swag, the expo, and the party atmosphere that starts with the confetti and continues all 26.2 miles!” Ralph Cunningham, age 57 from Owasso, Oklahoma, has run 75 marathons and loves the Route 66 Marathon because he “enjoys running with friends through some of the best parts of Tulsa.” Keith Landers, age 58 from nearby Jenks, Oklahoma, has run 28 marathons, 12

and it all starts with Route 66! “The Route 66 Marathon was my first and has created a drive that will push me and the participants that I have coached for the past 14 years well into the future,” he says. “I love the Route 66 Marathon for many reasons. It is well supported, challenging, hilly, tough, and makes me feel alive!” Keith’s first marathon experience was so powerful that it ended up changing his life. “This event has transformed my life and improved my health, happiness, and well-being,” he continued. “Since I started coaching, many of my participants have gone on to continue training and have coached other walking and running groups. I couldn’t be prouder!” We couldn’t either, Keith! Another familiar face on the course is Williams Route 66 Marathon pace group leader Kathryn White, who has helped lead Fleet Feet Tulsa’s marathon training programs every year and paces participants to their goals on race day. Kathryn, age 52, hails from Tulsa and has run an incredible 197 marathons and ultramarathons! “Since the Route 66 Marathon is run in my hometown, I have the rare opportunity to share the experience with my family, as well as so many running friends and volunteers that make this event truly memorable and wonderful,” she says. If you have any questions about the course, she’s bound to be able to answer them at the Expo and look for her on the course! Brian Gebhart, 53, from near Owasso, OK, has run 28 marathons and 26 ultramarathons. He says that the crowd support in Tulsa is the best of any marathon. “I like the challenge of the hills and the beautiful residential streets this time of year,” Brian explains. “No other marathon has something unique as the Center of the Universe Detour!” An interesting fact about Brian? He ran his first race in August of 2004 and to this day does almost zero training miles. “The only running I do is races,” he says. Whatever he’s

doing, it’s working - the farthest he has run is 131 miles in a 72-hour race! Mark Wood, 58, from Edmond, OK, has run 34 marathons. Mark runs for a cause close to his heart - Hearts for Hearing, which helps individuals suffering from hearing loss. “I run each race with a shirt or tag mentioning Hearts for Hearing, and I usually donate to them after each run and try to raise awareness for the needs of people who have hearing loss,” Mark explains. How’s that for adding some meaning to your marathon? So when the going gets tough on race day, just remember that the legacy runners are running right beside you and cheering you on! They’ll be registering early for next year, too (and so should you!).

The Williams Route 66 Marathon runners are: Stephen Abernathy Ralph Cunningham Dave Darcey Brian Gebhart Keith Landers Frank Muller III Marlon Onco Patty Powell Marv Reith Kathryn White Mark Wood

Race-day Information Tent Lose your timing tag, forget your race number, or just need some help with morning logistics? Head to the information tent. Please see the Tulsa Arts District Map for Saturday for the exact location.

Gear Check There will be no gear check for Saturday races.

Timing Chip A timing device is attached to your race number/bib. The bib is yours to keep, and there’s no need to turn your device back in. In order to make sure your time is accurately recorded, please make sure you follow these guidelines: • Do not remove the tag from the bib. • Wear the bib visibly on the front of your body - if you’re wearing a top layer that you may take off, consider pinning the bib to your pants/shorts! • Do not fold or crumple the bib. • Cross all timing mats during the race.

Your Race Number

Your race number must be worn on the outside of your clothing on the front of your body! If you are wearing a top layer

that you may remove, plan on pinning the number to your pants or shorts. Race officials, course photographers, and finish line personnel must be able to see your bib at all times to verify that you are an official participant, so please make sure it is clearly visible and on the outside of your clothing! Do not cut, fold, or otherwise alter your race number in any way. For safety reasons, race numbers are nontransferable and may only be worn by the participants to whom they are assigned. Please fill out the medical information on the back of your bib in case of emergency.

Gatorade Stations The Williams Route 66 Marathon knows hydration is extremely important on race day. That’s why we are proud to serve both Gatorade and water at all Gatorade stations on our courses. One Gatorade stop, located after the 3-kilometer mark between Boston Avenue and Main Street, is provided for the 5k participants. No Gatorade stops are offered during the one-mile Fun Run.

As such, it is imperative that you stay within the cones marking the course. Any deviations from the marked course could result in disqualification and a serious injury. ANY PARTICIPANT FOUND TO HAVE RUN/ WALKED LESS THAN THE FULL COURSE WILL BE DISQUALIFIED. DO NOT CROSS THE FINISH LINE IF YOU HAVE NOT COMPLETED THE ENTIRE COURSE.

Dropping Out If you are unable to finish the race, please notify a volunteer at the nearest aid station.

Medical Aid Medical aid will be provided on the course and at the finish line. Medical aid stations will be clearly marked along the course. Medical personnel will also travel the course in golf carts to look for participants in distress. Your personal safety is very important. In order to help us come to your aid as quickly as possible, all participants are required to complete the emergency information on the back of their race number and list any allergies or known medical issues for

medical personnel. Help us keep you safe on race day!

all races start at 8am! Race Information The marathon, half marathon, and marathon relay will be held on Sunday. All Sunday races are USATF certified and will be electronically timed. All races begin together at 8 am. Please note the following important details for Sunday races: Participants proceeding at a pace slower than 16:30 minutes per mile (finishing time of 6.5 hours) may be asked by the Tulsa Police Department to move to the sidewalk at various points along the course to allow the streets to reopen to traffic. Participants proceeding at a pace slower than 16:30 minutes per mile may not have access to Gatorade stations or medical aid stations, as these stations close based on the official time limit of 6.5 hours. The electronic timing system will remain open for 7.5 hours (until 3:30 pm); however, the official time limit for on-course support is 6.5 hours.

Start Line Information

proceed south on Main Street from the starting line. Please plan to arrive early to familiarize yourself with the start area. Refer to the Start Line Map for exact locations of your start corral, portable restrooms, gear check, and more.

Parking Plenty of parking is available on the streets of downtown Tulsa (free on Sundays!) and in paid parking lots. See the parking map for more information.

Restrooms Porta-potties are located throughout the start area near each corral, at the finish area in the Tulsa Arts District, and at many points along the course. Please refer to the Start Line Map, the Tulsa Arts District Map for Sunday, and the Course Map for exact locations. We know you’ve gotta go when you’ve gotta go, but please be patient and allow plenty of time to use the restroom prior to the race. There are likely to be lines on race morning.

Race Day Information Tent Lose your timing tag, forget your race number, or just need some help with morning logistics? Head to the information tent. Please see the Start Line Map and the Tulsa Arts District Map for Sunday for the exact locations.

Gear Check Stash your (non-valuable) stuff with us! Gear check is located at the corner of 6th Street and Boston Avenue. Please see the Start Line Map for the location of gear check. You can pick up your gear after the race as you leave the secured finish area on Reconciliation Way just east of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Please see the Tulsa Arts District Map for Sunday for the exact location of gear pickup. NOTE: ONLY THE CLEAR PLASTIC BAGS PROVIDED AT PACKET PICKUP WILL BE ACCEPTED AT GEAR CHECK. All participants checking gear must attach the gear check tag from their race number to the clear plastic bag for identification purposes. NO other bags will be accepted. Tulsa Route 66 Marathon, Inc. is not responsible for lost or stolen items, so we recommend keeping your valuables at home.

Time Limit The marathon course is open for 6.5 hours from 8 am to 2:30 pm. The course will begin to close on a rolling basis based on a 16:30 minute per mile estimated pace. For example, all participants should have passed the 2-mile mark by 33 minutes after the last participant crosses the start line. Participants proceeding at a pace slower than 16:30 minutes per mile may be asked by the Tulsa Police Department to move to the sidewalk at various points on the course to allow the streets to open to traffic. If participants choose to continue on the course after 2:30 pm, they do so at their own risk. Timing equipment will remain in place until 3:30 pm (7.5 hours), after which no finish times will be recorded. Finisher medals will only be awarded to those who receive an official finish time/finish within 7.5 hours. Finish line medical aid will close at 3:30 pm, after which time participants are asked to call 9-1-1 or proceed to the nearest emergency room in the event of a medical emergency.

Start Corrals In order to provide the best possible race day experience for all participants, the Williams Route 66 Marathon utilizes a corral system at the start line of the marathon, half marathon, and marathon relay. To allow for increased social distancing and 22

Races

enhanced participant safety, corrals will be filled less densely this year. Participants will be assigned to one of four start corrals based on the projected finish time that they provided at the time of registration, which helps keep the course flowing smoothly on race day. All race registrants are required to submit past and projected pace information at the time of registration to allow the race committee to properly assign corrals. The four corrals are designated by the letters A, B, C, and D, which are marked at the start area and on each athlete’s bib. ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST ENTER THEIR CORRALS AT THE BACK OF THE CORRAL. The corral area can be a little confusing if you aren’t familiar with it, so we recommend that all participants review the Start Line Map and arrive early to make sure they have time to find their corral. CORRALS WILL CLOSE 5 MINUTES PRIOR TO THE START OF THE RACE. NO EXCEPTIONS. NOTE: ALL PARTICIPANTS WHO REGISTERED AFTER OCTOBER 1, WILL BE ASSIGNED TO CORRAL D. If you wish to change your corral, simply stop by the Solutions Desk at packet pickup and request a corral change. If remaining space is available in your preferred corral, you will be authorized to change. Athletes will only be admitted into the corral that corresponds to the letter on their bib. Once in their assigned corral, athletes should

line up by pace according to the signs posted in the corral. This helps keep traffic moving forward on race day! We love when our participants want to race alongside their friends and/or training partners on race day! However, if participants desiring to race together are assigned to different corrals, they must all start in Corral D. There will be no exceptions. Hand cycle and wheelchair athletes will have their own separate corral at the start line that will be placed in front of the elite athletes. Hand cycle and wheelchair participants will start at 8 am. Participants in Corral A will start at 8:02 am. Participants in the following corrals will start at 5 minute intervals thereafter. Don’t worry, there will be confetti blasts for every corral!

Race Number

On-Course Food

Your race number must be worn on the front of your body! If you are wearing a top layer that you may remove, consider pinning the number to your pants or shorts. Race officials, course photographers, and finish line personnel must be able to see your bib at all times to verify that you are an official participant, so please make sure it is visible! Do not cut, fold, or otherwise alter your race number in any way. Race numbers are non-transferable and may only be worn by the participant to whom they are assigned for safety reasons. Please fill out the medical information on the back of your bib in case of emergency. Marathon relay participants should wear the separate race bib marked “RELAY” visibly on their backs to allow participants in the marathon and half marathon to identify them.

They say “don’t try anything new on race day,” but just in case you need a little fuel while out on the marathon course, we’ve got you covered! Fresh oranges and bananas will be available to marathon participants at the Gatorade station near mile 18. GU will be offered just before the Gatorade stations near mile 15 and 22, and pretzels will be available just before the Gatorade station near mile 24.

Gatorade Stations The Williams Route 66 Marathon knows hydration is extremely important on race day. That’s why we are proud to serve both Gatorade and water at all Gatorade stations on our courses. Gatorade stops are located approximately every 2 miles on the course for the first 20 miles of the marathon and every mile thereafter from miles 21 through 25. Please refer to the Course Map for further information on Gatorade Station locations.

Medical Aid Medical aid will be provided on the course and at the finish line. Medical aid stations will be clearly marked along the course. Medical personnel will also travel the course in golf carts to look for participants in distress. Your personal safety is very important. In order to help us come to your aid as quickly as possible, all participants are required to complete the emergency information on the back of their race number and list any allergies or known medical issues for medical personnel. Help us keep you safe on race day!

Course Restrictions No bicycles, roller skates, roller blades, skateboards, baby joggers or animals will be allowed on the race course at any time. 24

No large signage that would obstruct the visibility of other spectators or other official event signage. Assistance received from any source other than a race official may result in disqualification. In some areas, only one side of the road will be closed to vehicular traffic. As such, it is imperative that you stay within the cones marking the course. Any deviations from the marked course could result in disqualification and a serious injury. Race officials will be stationed along the course to ensure that each finisher has completed a full race distance. ANY PARTICIPANT FOUND TO HAVE RUN/ WALKED LESS THAN THE FULL COURSE WILL BE DISQUALIFIED. DO NOT CROSS THE FINISH LINE IF YOU HAVE NOT COMPLETED THE ENTIRE COURSE.

Dropping Out Participants who find themselves unable to finish the race should notify someone at the nearest relay exchange location (spaced approximately every 5 miles). Volunteers at the relay exchanges will be able to assist you. Please refer to the Relay Exchange Locations Map. In case of a medical emergency, please notify the nearest aid station volunteer for assistance.

Finish Line Congratulations, you made it! After crossing the finish line, we know there’s nothing

you’ll want to do more than sit down, but please, keep going! More good things are ahead. After you cross the finish line, you will enter a secure, fenced-off area for race participants and officials only. Marathon, half marathon, and participants completing the final leg of the marathon relay will receive their coveted finisher’s medals in this area. Water and Gatorade will also be available immediately after crossing the finish line. Speaking of finisher’s medals, please make sure you have the correct one before leaving the secure area! Volunteers are only human, after all. All participants in the marathon, half marathon, and marathon relay will receive medals. Participants completing their first marathon or first half marathon who registered as such prior to October 1 will receive a “My First Marathon” or “My First Half Marathon” medal. All participants will receive their medals in the finishers’ chute, including members of the Marathon Maniacs, 50 States Marathon Club, and Half Fanatics. Club members will NOT exchange their finisher medals in the club areas, as has occurred in previous years. PLEASE COLLECT YOUR FINISHER MEDAL IN THE CHUTE REGARDLESS OF YOUR CLUB AFFILIATION. RUCKERS: Please collect your finisher medal in the chute. To obtain your GORUCK patch, please email GreenCountryRuckers@gmail.com after the event and arrange for pickup or delivery.

Finishers’ Food and Beverage Area Refuel after your race with delicious pizza from Mazzios at the finish line! Participants will pass through the finishers’ food area in the finish chute after collecting their medals. In addition to Mazzios pizza, fruit, snacks, water, and Gatorade products will also be provided.

Results All results are unofficial until certified by race officials. Participants can check their unofficial results at the Results Tent (see the Tulsa Arts District Map for Sunday for location). Unofficial results will also be posted online at www.route66marathon. com as the race progresses. Race officials will post final results online following certification. Participants and their friends and families can also follow participants’ progress and receive updates via the Williams Route 66 Marathon mobile app.

Awards Family Reunification Area We know walking after you cross the finish line can be a struggle, so we try to make reuniting with your loved ones as easy as possible. We recommend meeting at the Family Reunite Area located on the south side of Guthrie Green, along Reconciliation Way. We know your family and friends will be ecstatic to see you when you cross the finish line, but unfortunately, we cannot use the public address system to reunite participants with their families. Therefore, please make sure to arrange a convenient meeting spot with your loved ones prior to the start of the race.

We believe everyone is a winner at the Williams Route 66 Marathon, but if you happen to place in the top three of your race, we’ve got a special prize for you! Per USATF Rule 245.1, Open Men’s and Women’s and Master Men’s and Women’s top three awards will be based on gun time (the order in which the athletes cross the finish line, regardless of starting position). Age-group awards will be based on timing system time (the actual time elapsed between an athlete crossing the start and finish lines).

Information

They say teamwork makes the dream work, and we’ll give you a chance to prove it at the Williams Route 66 Marathon Relay! The marathon relay will be held on Sunday and will start with the marathon and half marathon at 8 am. The marathon relay is comprised of five legs and follows the same course as the marathon. A participant may opt to complete more than one leg of the relay; however, all relay teams must have between three and five participants. There are three types of teams: all male, all female, and mixed (at least two female participants). In order to qualify for the Masters division, all members of a team must be 40 years of age or older.

Relay Exchange Zones

Exchange Zone Safety

All relay exchange zones will be clearly marked with cones, fencing, and signage. As participants approach the relay exchange zones, relay participants will be directed to the right side of the course, and marathon and half marathon participants will be directed to keep left.

It is extremely important that relay team members keep the exchange zones and the course clear. It will be necessary to cross the course to get to exchange zones 1 and 3. Relay participants are responsible for getting across the street safely and for crossing the course without interfering with any other participants. Course marshals will be there to guide you across the course, but please be careful of the traffic and considerate of the other participants! 30

Information

Marathon Relay Exchange Zones - While You Wait Tulsa weather is anything but predictable! While we wish we had a crystal ball to tell you what to wear on race day, your best bet is to check the conditions race weekend and dress appropriately for the wait. Whether that means you need to bundle up or bring your rain gear, make sure you’re prepared, because there will be limited, if any, shelter at the exchange zones. However, water and portable restrooms will be available near each exchange zone. We recommend packing a bag with warm, dry clothing for the runner that will be finishing at your exchange zone so that he/she can change after completing his/ her leg. You can then shed your extra layers and give them to the team member who will be returning to the start/finish area. No matter how you decide to handle the logistics, please remember that gear transfer is the responsibility of you and your teammates. LEG #

Information Finish Area Access - Finisher Food and Photo

Marathon relay athletes completing the first, second, third, or fourth legs of the relay will access the finishers’ chute through a separate relay entrance, located just past the medal collection area. This separate entrance will allow relay participants access to finish line food and beverages. Marathon relay team members MUST be wearing their race bibs in order to access the finishers’ area. All participants will be able to take individual and team photos with their medals, get finisher food and drinks, and enjoy the finishers’ area! However, only participants completing the final leg of the relay will access the finishers’ area by crossing the finish line. Everyone else must utilize the separate entrance by showing their bib. Trust us, this keeps things running smoothly and avoids confusion! NOTE: MARATHON RELAY PARTICIPANTS MAY ONLY ENTER THE FINISHERS’ AREA ONCE. Relay participants must exchange the tab that says “One Food Tent” on their bibs in order to gain access to the finisher’s area. Please time your visit to the food tent accordingly if you plan to have your team photo taken!

sustainability There’s no better way to embrace the beauty of nature than by running or walking through it. As runners and walkers, we are fortunate to enjoy the natural beauty of the environment throughout our training and experience each of the four seasons in a unique way. Recognizing the important link between runners and walkers and the natural environment, the Williams Route 66 Marathon works to protect these natural assets to ensure that future generations may also experience the same feelings of exhilaration for many years to come. We hope you will join us in our mission of conservation and sustainability! Thanks to the combined efforts of the board of directors, many community partners, and environmentally-minded race participants and spectators, the Williams Route 66 Marathon has been recognized by the Council for Responsible Sport for our sustainability efforts as a Certified Sustainable Event. This important designation shows the Marathon’s continued commitment to preserving Tulsa’s natural beauty and resources while putting on a worldclass endurance event. We are committed to being a no-waste event; all of the waste generated during race weekend is recycled, donated, or composted! The Williams Route 66 Marathon team challenges itself to look for new ways to reduce the environmental footprint of all race weekend activities. We encourage participants and fans to join us in this endeavor and help make this year our best, most environmentally friendly event ever! Sustainability is a group effort and each of us can play an important role in making the Williams Route 66 Marathon a more environmentally friendly event. Here’s how you can help: • Donate your used running shoes at the Health, Fitness, and Sustainability Expo. • Carpool or ride your bike to the start line on race day. • Use your own water bottle on the course. • Watch for recycling stations along the course and use them. • Throw cups, used gel packs, and other waste in trash cans along the course — please don’t litter!

Race Day

Cancellation & Alteration policy We know how hard you’ve worked to get to the start line, and we hope you know how hard we’ve been working all year to make race weekend special for you! This weekend matters a great deal to us all, but sometimes, plans change based on safety concerns. It is the primary goal of the Williams Route 66 Marathon to provide and ensure a safe event for participants, volunteers, and community attendees alike. We will be diligent in not exposing our participants, volunteers, or the community at large to any undue risk in the production and/or execution of the event. Decisions regarding race cancellations and/or alterations will be based on the safety of the larger community as well as the safety of the participants. Moreover, if community resources are threatened, we will act to protect them from unnecessary stress. Please know that we understand exactly how important race day is to you, and we do not take any decisions regarding cancellation or alteration lightly. When weather conditions or other hazardous conditions present a danger to the participants as a whole, the Williams Route 66 Marathon officials reserve the right to cancel the race. Less threatening conditions could cause the alteration of the race, including the alteration of the race course and/or length of the race to ensure participant, volunteer, and community safety. The conditions fall under an “Act of God” and will not result in the refunding

of any race entry fee or issuance of future race credits. The staging of an event of this magnitude places a significant financial burden on the Williams Route 66 Marathon organization prior to the event date, as the vast majority of costs are paid in advance. Thus, in the event of a forced race cancellation or alteration, it is probable that the financial impact on the race would not be any different than if the race were held without compromise. The Williams Route 66 Marathon officials, along with City of Tulsa officials, will make decisions regarding the cancellation or alteration of the race in hazardous conditions. Prior to the race, the Williams Route 66 Marathon officials will inform the participants of the weather conditions and how the on-course flag system designation works. Williams Route 66 Marathon officials will describe any changes that may be considered as a result of weather or other unsafe conditions. In the case of a course evacuation, Williams Route 66 Marathon officials, Tulsa Police, and other City of Tulsa officials will communicate throughout the race course to direct participants to safe shelters to await transportation back to the start and/or finish area.

40

Race Day weather Policy

The Williams Route 66 Marathon has adopted the WBGT (Wet-Bulb Globe Temperature) index as its standard. High heat and humidity, as measured in accordance with the American College of Sports Medicine recommendations for participation in endurance events, could result in cancellation of the event. The WBGT measures the effects of heat and humidity, thereby making it more accurate than simply using the temperature alone as a gauge of conditions. WBGT is considered “the most practical heat stress index characterizing the effect of a heat stress environment on the individual.” While you might think that there’s not likely to be problem with heat during a midNovember race, the WBGT also measures when conditions are severe enough to cause hypothermia. In order to alert participants to weather conditions on race day, the Williams Route 66 Marathon will use a flag system (refer to the table below). A banner with two flags reflecting the heat stress at the start time will be suspended over the street at the starting line. Gatorade stops along the course will also fly flags corresponding to the current heat stress level. Flags will be changed within 15 minutes of a change in heat stress level. The staff manning each Gatorade stop will be familiar with the meaning of each flag color.

participants are equally acclimated. We understand the disappointment and frustration of a race being cancelled or altered due to conditions that you personally may find acceptable. However, extreme conditions that are high risk already place a burden on community health care systems, including emergency medical transportation, as well as hospital emergency room capacity. Williams Route 66 Marathon officials will not knowingly place the community in any such position that will place a burden on the overall safety of the community. The Williams Route 66 Marathon asserts that each participant assumes responsibility when entering an event with the potential risks that endurance events present. All participants should be discerning of their own fitness level in their decision to participate in the weekend events. Furthermore, the Williams Route 66 Marathon strongly advises all participants to cooperate with directives given by Williams Route 66 Marathon officials and to assist in ensuring the safety of their fellow participants, particularly when conditions are less than ideal. Let’s make sure all participants have a fun, happy, and SAFE race day!

While you personally may be used to extreme heat or cold conditions, not all 41

To Watch Kathrine Switzer, the first woman ever to officially run the Boston Marathon, once said, “If you are losing faith in human nature, go out and watch a marathon.” Just in case that happens to apply to you (or even if it doesn’t), we strongly encourage you to come out and support the Williams Route 66 Marathon participants on race day! Nothing gives these athletes a bigger energy boost than being cheered and high-fived along the way, so come out and show them the hospitality that has made Tulsa famous. We’ve got plenty of easily accessible spots for you!

On the Marathon and Half Marathon Course There are plenty of spots where you can watch our marathoners and half marathoners race! • What better place to feel the excitement and electricity in the air than at the starting line? Hear the national anthem and watch the confetti fly as participants begin their journeys on the course. The start line is located in downtown Tulsa at 7th and Main Streets. • Love fall foliage? Cheer on your favorite participant (and everyone else) at Cascia Hall Preparatory School, near 25th Street and Yorktown and Utica Avenues or at Woodward Park, at 21st Street and Peoria Avenue! • Looking for a major party? Head to the corner of Woodward Blvd and Hazel Blvd for “Wild on Woodward,” a marathon-sized block party! There will be tons of snacks, music, and we’ve been told there could be a Jell-O shot or two!

• Another favorite cheering spot among locals and visitors alike is Tulsa’s Brookside area, located on Peoria Avenue between 33rd and 39th Streets. There are plenty of restaurants, coffee shops, and more to ply you with whatever you need to get your pipes warmed up and ready to cheer!

On the Marathon Course (Miles 13 - 25.5) Marathoners need love, too! Don’t forget about our marathon participants as they continue on their journeys after splitting from the half marathoners. • Kill two birds with one stone by grabbing some delicious brunch and cheering on our marathoners when you hang out in Tulsa’s Blue Dome District (on 1st and 2nd Streets between Detroit and Frankfort Avenues), the East Village (between 2nd and 6th Streets near Lansing and Kenosha), or the ever popular Cherry Street area on 15th Street between Peoria and Utica Avenues.

To Watch • Visit our party location at 6th and Peoria, where you’ll be able to catch our marathoners twice! Spot them at miles 14 and 24 while you enjoy plenty of space to spread out, live music, and more! This is the place to watch your athletes during the toughest part of the race!

• The University of Tulsa is another great cheering spot, especially at “The U” near 11th Street and Tucker Drive. There is plenty of parking and excellent viewing near the all-important 20-mile mark as runners start really digging deep.

At the Finish Line Everyone loves to watch as someone achieves their dreams, right? If that sounds great to you, position yourself at the marathon finish line. With the finish line located at Guthrie Green in the Tulsa Arts District, fans will enjoy lining the District’s streets from First Street, through the Center of the Universe Detour, along Archer Street near Boulder Avenue to Cameron Street to see racers approach the finish line. In addition to the excitement of watching participants cross the line, there will be an epic finish line party at Guthrie Green complete with great music and plenty of other sights and sounds for all ages! Tulsa Arts District businesses will be open and ready to serve participants and spectators alike! Check out the course maps for more possibilities on where you can spectate! Help us ROCK THE ROUTE on race day!
