Group Travel Destinations went through a metamorphic change last year with the goal of providing more relevant and timely information to our readers. We think we accomplished that with hyper-local regional content, a better display of what to do, where to stay and what to see across seven U.S. regions. For this year’s guide, three of our travel editors scoured the country in search of tourism developments to help you stay on top of your game. At the same time, hundreds of group-friendly suppliers are showcased with profiles, Site InSpections and sample itineraries. I’m proud to say we experienced a phenomenal uplift in “GTD” from a consumption standpoint last year. Group Travel Destinations is often the first publication folks pick up at trade shows and conferences, attesting to its long shelf-life and resource-rich materials. Connecticut MYSTIC – The Mayflower II has completed its multi-year restoration at Mystic Seaport Museum’s shipyard using techniques from the 1600s. The 60-year-oldship will be on display at the museum through April 2020 before setting sail for Boston and Plymouth for the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims’ arrival in America. Mystic Seaport’s Thompson Exhibition Building features J.M.W. Turner: Watercolors from Tate, the most comprehensive exhibition of Turner watercolors ever displayed in the U.S., through February 23, 2020. The final section of the exhibition, “Turner and the Sea,” was curated especially for Mystic Seaport. It is a selection of 17 watercolors, oils and the British artist’s sketchbook of scenes of the sea – shipwrecks, a beached boat, coastal views and purely atmospheric images. An intricate, large-scale work made of salt by Japanese artist Motoi Yamamoto will be on display from April to October 2020, while Discovering Antarctica, an exhibition celebrating humankind’s discovery of the last continent, will run from December 2020 to November 2021. STRATFORD – Area Two, a sour, barrel-aging and experimental brewery from Two Roads Brewing Company, opened on 10 acres with a tasting room, seasonal patio and rooftop beer garden. In addition to lambic-style sour beers and beers aged in barrels obtained from distilleries and wineries, it serves kombucha on tap. Also offered are food trucks and assorted cheeses and artisanal crackers from Fairfield Cheese Company.
Maine STATEWIDE – Maine is turning 200 in 2020. To mark two centuries of statehood, visitors will be able to take part in events throughout the state, from festivals to parades and community celebrations, between March and October. A special feature honoring Maine’s maritime heritage 6

is the Summer Coast Festival (July 16-19, 2020), when hundreds of ships will sail from Portland and up the coast. PORTLAND – Mythmakers: The Art of Winslow Homer and Frederic Remington will feature iconic works of the American artists from July 1-September 27, 2020, at the Portland Museum of Art. Touted by turn-of-the-20th-century critics as “self-taught” and “home grown,” both men displayed a distinct sense of American identity rooted in action, vigor, selfreliance, independence and relationship to the wilderness. Homer is best known for depicting rocky Eastern coastlines, while Remington developed his own vision of the American West.
Massachusetts BOSTON – Time Out Market Boston, showcasing some of the city’s best chefs and restaurateurs, has opened on the ground floor of a vintage building in the the heart of the vibrant Fenway neighborhood. Spread across 25,000 square feet, it includes 15 eateries, two bars, a demo kitchen, retail shop and a video wall. Food choices range from lobster rolls and clam chowder to Middle Eastern fare, deli sandwiches, gelato, donuts and vegan dishes. High Street Place, a food hall seating 500, just opened in the shared atrium space between 160 Federal St. and 100 High St. in Boston’s Financial District. It features a large-format projection screen and an area for live music performances. EVERETT – Encore Boston Harbor, the country's most expensive resort development of 2019, features a 210,000-square-foot casino, 15 dining and lounge venues, 671 guest rooms, a spa and a four-season, six-acre Harborwalk featuring pedestrian and bike paths, picnic park, gazebo, viewing decks, waterfront dining and green space with floral displays. The gaming area is divided into two levels, with high ceilings and red Murano glass chandeliers transplanted

New Hampshire BRETTON WOODS – Omni Mount Washington Resort, offering New Hampshire’s largest ski area, unveils the state’s first eight-person gondola during the 2019-2020 ski season. The historic hotel also is building a new guest room wing and an on-mountain dining and event venue.
Rhode Island PROVIDENCE – The state’s capital city is home to a new vegan food hall, Plant City. Housed in the two-story building are six vegan food businesses, including four restaurants, a cafe and retail market. The 225-seat food hall is the brainchild of chef/restaurateur Matthew Kenney, a wellness entrepreneur known for vegan and raw cooking. Plant City is located right across from the new Providence River Pedestrian Bridge, which makes the East Side more accessible by foot and bicycle from the city’s bustling Jewelry District. A new self-guided walking tour map of the Jewelry District is available. WATCH HILL – The Center for Wine and Culinary Arts at Ocean House, a newly created, 3,000-square-foot education and entertaining space, is an intimate place to take wine and cooking classes. It draws inspiration from an early 1800s Connecticut tobacco barn, from which various parts of the structure – including its wide plank walls, flooring and post-and-beam structures – were reassembled to create an elegant venue with historic charm and top-of-the-line technology.

HYANNIS – Cape Cod Potato Chips has re-opened its Hyannis Factory Tour in Cape Cod, spotlighting renovations, visitor experiences and behind-the-scenes opportunities. The renovations include an expanded space to accommodate more visitors; an up-close-and-personal view of the quintessential kettles with photo opportunities; and a picturesque patio for guests to sit back and take it all in and enjoy some chips. PLYMOUTH – The town of Plymouth and other Massachusetts communities will celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage and founding of Plymouth Colony in 2020 with special events, festivals, educational programming and exhibitions throughout the year. Plymouth 400 will highlight the cultural contributions and American traditions that began with the interaction of the Wampanoag and English peoples, a story that significantly shaped the building of America. Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton presents Another Crossing: Artists Revisit the Mayflower Voyage, an exhibition (May 2-August 30, 2020) recognizing the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower crossing and its significance to American and world history. SALEM – The Peabody Essex Museum (PEM), one of the oldest and fastest-growing museums in the country, just opened its new three-story, 40,000-square-foot wing. The $125 million expansion, a component of the art museum’s $650 million Connect Campaign, features 15,000 square feet of new gallery space, a light-filled atrium, an entry for school and group tours, linkages to existing galleries and a garden. The new wing and adjacent renovated galleries will feature fresh installations of the museum’s collections and new commissioned work by contemporary artists. PEM has become one of the nation’s largest art museums located outside of a major urban center.

Mount Washington Cog Railway The Mount Washington Cog Railway in New Hampshire is a narrated three-hour roundtrip train ride to the summit of Mount Washington on a historic railway. The ride is around one hour each way, and patrons have 60 minutes to explore the summit of Mount Washington, including the Sherman Adams Visitor Center. OCEAN VIEW – The first phase of Delaware Botanic Gardens at Pepper Creek just opened on the Delmarva Peninsula. It celebrates the coastal plain with a sustainable garden that inspires visitors to preserve Delmarva’s native landscape. One garden is built among farmhouse ruins. Guided tours are available, and a section of the parking lot is reserved for tour buses. WILMINGTON – DE.CO is a new food hall in downtown Wilmington. Eight restaurant stalls, an atrium bar and private event space are set in the historic, Art Deco-style DuPont Building. Food choices range from chicken and waffles to artisan pizza and Indian street food.
BALTIMORE – Visit Baltimore will host the American Bus Association Marketplace, the premier business event for the group travel industry, January 29-February 2, 2021. Maryland plans to offer pre- and post-tours in various parts of the state. COLUMBIA – Shows for 2020-2021 at Toby’s Dinner Theatre include Kinky Boots, January 10-March 22, 2020; Shrek the Musical, March 27-June 7; Monty Python’s Spamalot, June 12August 23; Godspell, August 28-November 1; Elf the Musical, November 6, 2020-January 10, 2021; and Something Rotten!, January 15-March 21, 2021.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After a 37-month closure, the iconic Washington Monument has reopened with a new elevator system and visitor center as part of a $10.8 million project. The National Park Service has begun a $25 million renovation of the 95-year-old Lincoln Memorial, adding new services and design to enhance the visitor experience, including activating the space below the monument. Completion is expected prior to the centennial of the memorial’s dedication in 2022. A 15-month project to restore the roofs, repair the stone and clean the marble at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial is expected to be completed by May 2020. Also on the National Mall, the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial is slated for dedication on May 8, 2020 – the 75th anniversary of V-E Day. Featuring a stainless steel tapestry and heroic-sized bronze sculptures, the shrine honoring America’s 34th president, spans four acres between the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum and the Department of Education. The National World War I Memorial is scheduled to be completed in late 2021 in Pershing Park across from The Willard InterContinental Hotel. Construction continues on the National Native American Veterans Memorial on the grounds of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, with an opening scheduled for November 2020. The $1 billion Project Journey underway at Reagan National Airport will result in new security checkpoints with 28 additional screening lanes and a new 14-gate concourse. The checkpoints and concourse with jet bridges and concessions are scheduled to open in 2021. 10

EAST RUTHERFORD – The first phase of American Dream mega-mall has been unveiled at the Meadowlands Sports Complex. It eventually will include more than 300 retail and entertainment venues, plus a food court, kosher food hall and 23 full-service restaurants. There will be an indoor Nickelodeon amusement park, indoor water park, ice skating rink and a ski slope that uses snowmaking equipment, plus a SEA LIFE Aquarium, LEGOLAND Discovery Center, an observation wheel and two 18-hole miniature golf courses.
New York NEW YORK CITY – Hudson Yards, the largest mixed-use private real estate development in American history, is open for business on the west side of midtown Manhattan. The complex of glass buildings includes offices, residences, shops, restaurants and a hotel. The new neighborhood’s tallest building, at 101 stories, will have the Western Hemisphere’s highest outdoor observatory (Edge). Hudson Yards’ focal point is the plaza’s 15-story Vessel, a climbable sculpture laced with 154 staircases and 80 landings that offer views of the city from different

Pennsylvania CHADDS FORD – Vote for Women: A Visual History (February 1-June 7, 2020) at the Brandywine River Museum of Art commemorates the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote. On display will be drawings, illustrations and posters expressing the message of the suffragists, plus costumes, clothing, sashes and emblems worn by the women activists. HERSHEY – In the summer of 2020, Hersheypark is opening Hershey’s Chocolatetown, the
most transformative expansion in the park’s history. One attraction will be Candymonium, the park’s 15th coaster and its longest, tallest and fastest (up to 76 mph). Chocolatetown also will feature a themed, full-service restaurant, a confectionery kitchen, ice cream parlor and Starbucks coffee shop. PHILADELPHIA – Renovation of the Independence Visitor Center, the official visitor center of greater Philadelphia and gateway to Independence National Historical Park, features upgrades such as a 42-foot, interactive digital wall that displays content visitors can explore via touchscreen, the first Hershey’s Kitchens location in Philadelphia, an eight-minute film featuring sites and attractions, the official gift shop of Philadelphia and a mezzanine-level, outdoor terrace with unparalleled views of Independence Mall for capturing the perfect selfie. The Philadelphia Museum of Art presents the exhibition Off the Wall: American Art to Wear through May 17, 2020. Focusing on the period of 1967 through 1997, the exhibition features over 100 one-of-akind works by more than 50 artists employing a wide range of techniques, including free-form crochet, hand knitting, machine knitting, macrame, leather work, beadwork, embroidery, applique, hand painting and resist dye. Under development is The Museum of Sports, which would be located in the heart of the South Philadelphia sports complex, where the city’s four professional teams play. It would celebrate sports across the United States with a particular focus on Philadelphia. Opening in 2020 on Independence Mall, the $60 million Faith and Liberty Discovery Center, an initiative of the American Bible Society, will explore the relationship and role of faith and liberty in fostering core American values through film, interactive media, imagery and artifacts. VALLEY FORGE – Renovation of the Valley Forge National Historical Park Visitor Center is set for completion in late 2020. It will offer new interpretive exhibits and a high-definition orientation film chronicling the 1777-1778 winter encampment during the Revolutionary War. A temporary visitor center is serving guests during the construction project.
Virginia FORT BELVOIR – The National Museum of the United States Army will open June 4, 2020. A project of the U.S. Army and nonprofit Army Historical Foundation, it will be the first museum of its kind to document the Army’s 244-year history. Admission will be free. Fort Belvoir is 20 minutes from the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

The Empire State Building just introduced a second-floor gallery that immerses guests in digitally enhanced exhibits ranging from the building’s construction to its place in pop culture. The World’s Most Famous Building exhibit has more than 70 screens that show the skyscraper’s starring roles in movies, TV shows, commercials, cartoons, comic books and video games. Also spotlighted are celebrities who have visited the 86th-floor observatory. The American Kennel Club’s Museum of the Dog, formerly in St. Louis, has returned to AKC headquarters in Manhattan, not far from Grand Central Terminal. The updated museum has interactive stations, including Find Your Match, in which a kiosk matches your face to a dog breed, and Meet the Breeds, a touchscreen that lets guests explore the history and traits of different breeds. The museum also features paintings, figurines and sculptures. Empire Outlets, New York City’s only outlet shopping destination, has opened on Staten Island, just steps from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal. An outdoor mall on five levels, it features familiar retail names like Brooks Brothers, Columbia, Jockey, Old Navy, Crocs, Levi’s, Guess, Nike, H&M, Nordstrom Rack, Banana Republic and American Eagle. COOPERSTOWN – The hobby of collecting baseball cards is the focus of Shoebox Treasures, the newest permanent exhibit at the National Baseball Hall of Fame. On display in “The Cards Your Mother Threw Away” are vertical files featuring more than 2,000 cards. The “Holy Grails” display features 10 of the rarest and most sought-after cards. One station lets visitors pose for their own baseball card photo and email it.

AMERICAN REVOLUTION MUSEUM AT YORKTOWN The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown opened in 2017 and tells the story of our nation’s founding, from the twilight of the colonial period to the dawn of the Constitution and beyond. The museum, through comprehensive indoor exhibits and outdoor living history, offers a renewed national perspective on the Revolution, conveying a sense of its epic scale, transformational nature and complexity of the country’s Revolutionary heritage. The 22,000-square-foot permanent exhibition galleries engage visitors in the tumult, drama and promise of the Revolution, with immersive environments, interactive
exhibits, nearly 500 period artifacts and innovative films, including an experiential theater that transports visitors to the Siege of Yorktown with wind, smoke and the thunder of cannon fire. In the 170-seat museum theater, the movie Liberty Fever draws visitors into the world of Revolutionary America, setting the stage for the museum experience. The introductory film is narrated by an early 19th-century storyteller who has traveled the country gathering stories about the American Revolution and shares his accounts using a moving panorama presentation of the time period. The storyline of the Revolution leaps to life in outdoor areas that enthrall groups as they take an active role in living history with the help of historical expertise from costumed interpreters. In the re-created Continental Army encampment, visitors can learn about the life of a soldier, take in daily demonstrations on medical treatment, camp life and cooking, and feel the rumble of the cannon with artillery firings in the amphitheater. Another re-creation is a Revolution-era farm, based on a real-life 18th-century family, where visitors are invited to try their hand at preparing 18th-century recipes, learn how to process plant fiber for cloth and play period games.

MOBILE – The Exploreum Science Center has announced a groundbreaking new partnership with the Poarch Band of Creek Indians in the digital upgrade of its Dome Theater. Working with D3D, a nationally recognized company, the Exploreum will make a huge leap from its current state as a film-based theater into a digital laser-based Giant Screen Dome theater. MONTGOMERY – Construction has begun on a $50 million whitewater park and outdoor fun center on the outskirts of downtown Montgomery. The main attraction is a 25-acre central park featuring rafting and kayaking along a man-made whitewater course that twists through restaurants, shops, a beer garden and outdoor concert venue. The opening is planned for 2022.
DAYTONA BEACH – Daytona International Speedway has completed a $400 million renovation and offers a year-round 30-minute All-Aces or VIP Speedway Track Tour. A walk across the pedestrian bridge is a million square feet of shops, restaurants and hotel accommodations. ORLANDO – Coming in January 2020 in the Canada Pavilion of Epcot at Walt Disney World Resort is an update of the popular O Canada! 360-degree show. Awesome Planet, a new film highlighting the diversity of the planet, also opens January 2020. At the France Pavilion, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure and Le Creperie de Paris both open in summer 2020. Cirque du Soleil will open spring 2020 at Walt Disney World’s Disney Springs. Opening spring 2020, Ice Breaker will be SeaWorld Orlando’s first launch roller coaster. TAMPA BAY – Iron Gwazi will be North America’s tallest coaster and it’s coming to Busch Gardens Tampa Bay opening 2020.
Arkansas BENTONVILLE – The Montgomery brings visual, performing and culinary arts into a creative, communal space. General admission is free. The opening is set for February 22, 2020. PINE BLUFF – Almost 80,000 square feet of gaming at the new Saracen Casino Resort has a planned opening Valentine’s Day 2020. WEST MEMPHIS – Southland Park has announced a $250 million casino and hotel expansion at its long-time dog track and “racino.” HOT SPRINGS – Oaklawn Racing and Gaming is bringing a $100 million expansion project, including a new hotel. More than 28,000 square feet additional gaming space will open in January 2020 with the hotel set to open in late 2020. FORT SMITH – The U.S. Marshals Museum building and Hall of Honor, which memorializes fallen marshals, has opened. The completion of the visitor experience exhibits is anticipated for the first quarter of 2021. 22

Georgia MARIETTA – Six Flags Waterpark will open 2020 with a new five-story water slide, The Plunge, which features two-person rafts on a 500-foot course of giant turns. Kentucky BARDSTOWN – Heaven Hills Distillery is investing millions in a revamped visitor experience set to open in 2020. They are expanding their educational and retail spaces, plus building a new rooftop bar that will feature cocktails and bourbon tastings. LEXINGTON – The Breeders’ Cup World Championships will return to Keeneland Race Course November 6-7, 2020. This will mark the second running of the event at Keeneland (the first was in 2015).

NEW ORLEANS – Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Wonder is coming to New Orleans in 2020. Royal Caribbean will offer year-round cruises from New Orleans on the 2,744-passenger Majesty of the Seas from January 2020 through April 2021. A new, $1 billion world-class terminal complex is underway at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport and scheduled to open spring 2020. DARROW – Opening spring 2020, Great River Road Museum and Interpretive Center is Houmas House Plantation and Gardens’ latest addition inviting visitors to learn about 1800sera steamboats and their contribution to Louisiana’s culture.
ROCK HILL – World-class water slide racing is coming to Carowinds theme park in summer 2020 when Boogie Board Racer, the longest mat racing slide in the Southeast, debuts at Carolina Harbor waterpark. Also new in 2020 is Grand Carnivale, a nighttime international festival and street party celebrating global culture in grand scale, with signature beverages and a special menu. MYRTLE BEACH – Plans have been approved for Gateway Galleria, a mixed-use complex on Seventh Avenue North and Ocean Boulevard in downtown Myrtle Beach. The $20 million project will include a four-story, 75,000-square-foot complex that will house over 40 visitor condos and a bottom floor filled with restaurants, fitness and retail. A completion date has yet to be determined. GREENVILLE – Unity Park is set to change the landscape of downtown Greenville in 2021. The GHS Swamp Rabbit cycling trail with a pedestrian bridge over the Reedy River will surround the 60-acre gathering spot. Unity Park will have playground areas, water features, six acres of designated flat greenspace, a memorial, and an 80-foot-high observation tower.
KITTY HAWK – Kitty Hawk Kites is now teaching people how to fly a museum-quality replica of the 1902 Wright Glider at Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head. This location is actually the site dedicated to commemorating the historic soaring record, which Orville set in October 1911, of 9 minutes 45 seconds. WAYNESVILLE – Leap Frog Tours is introducing unique offerings such as nature tours, art tours, and yoga and wellness options.
Tennessee MEMPHIS – A multiphase plan is underway to modernize Memphis International Airport. In addition to moving walkways, wider corridors, larger boarding areas, higher ceilings and natural lighting, there will be new retail and dining options. MADISON – After spending more than a year without a home, a long-running concert series, radio broadcast and TV series is putting down "roots" in Madison. Music City Roots will build a new venue at historic Amqui Station. The Roots Barn is set to open in fall 2020, with a planned seating capacity of 750, or 1,000-plus for standing. NASHVILLE – The National Museum of African American Music is opening early 2020 as part of downtown Nashville’s $450 million Fifth + Broadway development. It will feature five permanent galleries honoring the genres of jazz, blues, hip-hop, gospel and R&B in addition to a 200-seat theater and visiting exhibits. PIGEON FORGE – The Island in Pigeon Forge flying theater attraction, a state-of-the-art ride system featuring national wonders and landmarks, is set to open early 2020. The Mountain Mile, with retail, amusements and dining, will be anchored by the Mountain Monster coaster and four different rides.

PRESCOTT—The new Western Heritage Center is a unique collaboration of more than 25 museums, historical societies and other related organizations to promote Arizona’s western heritage. Independent exhibits featuring the Rough Riders, ranching, railroad, film history, mining, and more will also be included. Later this year, interactive touch screens will encourage visitors to learn more about each organization’s history and mission, while also offering directions to their locations. Located in the northwest expanse of the Valley, Castle Hot Springs was Arizona’s first luxury resort. For centuries, the Castle Hot Springs area was a medicinal healing habitat for the Yavapai and Apache Indians. In 1896, Castle Hot Springs opened as a resort getaway for wealthy tourists seeking solitude and the springs’ recuperative powers. A local partnership, with multi-generational roots in Arizona, purchased the property in 2014 and began restoring remnants of the original resort, which was severely damaged in a 1976 fire. The updated resort consists of 32 luxury accommodations, including Spring Cottages, which have piping directly from the hot springs. The resort also includes an organic farm that produces more than 150 varieties of rare fruits and vegetables for the restaurant and bar. The hot springs is fed from a 10,000-foot underground cistern that produces over 300,000 gallons of pure 120-degree mineral water per day. SCOTTSDALE—Opening in the fall of 2019, Great Wolf Lodge Arizona will make a splash in the hospitality and tourism scene by bringing its impressive 85,000-square-foot indoor water park to the Phoenix metropolitan area. Highlights of the 350- room resort will include a 27,000-square-foot family entertainment center known as the Great Wolf Adventure Park, several dining options, family-friendly suites in a variety of styles including KidCabin suites, and nearly 6,500 square feet of flexible conference space. The hotel will be built in the Talking Stick Entertainment District next door to Salt River Fields, the Arizona Diamondbacks' and Colorado Rockies' spring-training home.
ALBUQUERQUE—After breaking ground last October, Urban Air Albuquerque is expected to open in summer 2019. This new attraction is a more than $10 million project, and will offer indoor skydiving, an indoor trampoline park, indoor roller coaster, climbing walls, and a ropes course. SANTE FE—Sorrel Sky Gallery has opened a "Rock Art Garden" on the gallery's second floor. This revolving, open-air exhibit features the work of sculptor Star Liana York. Her Ancient Impressions series is based on images she observed while hiking and riding through the canyons of the Southwest. Moved by the powerful beauty of the cave paintings and pictographs, she created her own interpretations in her Rock Art Mares, Stallions and Minis.

OKLAHOMA CITY—White Water Bay, Oklahoma City’s largest water park, is getting a tropical makeover as it transforms from White Water Bay to Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Oklahoma City. It will feature an island-inspired experience and offer enhancements throughout the park, including upgraded dining and retail locations, expanded seating, fresh tropical paint, and a bold new entrance. A new two-tiered mat water racing slide will be splashing into the park as the lineup of thrills expands. Wahoo Racer features six side-by-side racing lanes, each with its own pattern of twists, hills, and maximum airtime. Lying head-first on a specially designed water toboggan, you'll push off on a splashy high-speed dash for the finish line, sliding around 300 feet of twists, turns, 360-degree loops, and open-air stretches at 40 feet per second. In fall 2019, Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center will open a spectacular new arts education and cultural resource on a 4.6-acre site. In addition to providing a world-class facility for exhibitions, performance and education and a breathtaking addition to the OKC skyline, the new campus will become a “creative commons,” a place for communities to gather, create and experience art. A Studio School will tell the stories behind the art of now and teach the skills to create what’s next. Incorporating programming from community partners, Oklahoma Contemporary will be a hub for artistic experiences of all kinds and offer the city an event space like no other. TAHLEQUAH – Cherokee Nation recently hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of the Cherokee National History Museum. The museum is the newest addition to the tribe’s tourism offerings and is located within one of its most iconic structures, the Cherokee National Capitol building. The Cherokee National History Museum shares the history and culture of the Cherokee Nation within 4,000 square feet of permanent exhibit space that features Cherokee lifestyle from pre-European contact through the Trail of Tears a nd the revitalization of the tribe after the American Civil War.
SAN ANTONIO—SEA LIFE Aquarium, the world’s biggest aquarium brand, is opening a new location at the San Antonio Shops at Rivercenter in May. SEA LIFE San Antonio will feature a tropical ocean tank with a walk-through underwater tunnel, taking visitors on a seamless journey under the sea. FORT WORTH—The Sinclair is a newly opened boutique hotel that is opening its doors in May, featuring a refined western style with a sophisticated, casual atmosphere. This urban chic 1930s hotel is surrounded by a vibrant city scene with nightly outdoor entertainment, shopping and modern dining. HOUSTON—Plans to move forward with the final design and construction of a $105 million project to transform the Astrodome into an event center have been approved. The Astrodome was the world's first multi-purpose, domed sports stadium and known as the Eighth Wonder of the World. After opening in 1965, the stadium also become the first major sports venue to install artificial turf, hence the name AstroTurf. Proposed plans will repurpose the space an event center and raise the floor to create below-ground parking. Developing over the next three years, the beloved Houston Farmer’s Market will transform into an 18-acre destination for locals and visitors. Bringing together food purveyors and unique retail vendors, the space will continue to serve as a community hub with programming and events. To help achieve this goal, James Beard Award-winning chef Chris Shepherd and his business partner Kevin Floyd have been tapped to serve as food and beverage consultants for the project.

Illinois CHICAGO – The Obama Presidential Center is expected to open in 2021 in historic Jackson Park on the South Side of Chicago, not far from where Barack and Michelle Obama lived and where the first lady grew up. It will include three buildings—a museum, forum and library —that will form a campus surrounding a public plaza for performances, markets and fairs. Exhibits will tell the Obamas’ story within the context of civil rights and African-American, Chicago and U.S. history. Wired to Wear, an expansive exhibition dedicated to the future of wearable technology, is running through May 2020 at the Museum of Science and Industry. Guests learn how merging technology into clothing will transform what we wear into devices that will make us healthier, stronger and smarter. Examples include a customizable digital backpack, an airbag for cyclists and a jet suit that can travel at more than 30 miles per hour and ascend to 12,000 feet. Indiana INDIANAPOLIS – Visitors of all ages can take a virtual trip to Greece via new long-term exhibitions at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. Rare antiquities and actor interpreters will help bring history to life in Treasures of Ancient Greece, which looks at how the ideas of the ancient Greeks formed the basis of current practices in science, politics and medicine. Take Me There: Greece, one of the largest exhibitions on contemporary Greece ever mounted in the United States, lets guests explore the country through food, music and dance, and home life. 38

FORT WAYNE – The state’s second-largest city has returned to its historical riverfront with the opening of Promenade Park, a development that renews Fort Wayne’s three rivers—the St. Marys, St. Joseph and Maumee—as a regional destination for recreation, arts and culture. The park joins the rivers with downtown Fort Wayne. Interactive elements include a treetop canopy trail that stretches between the Wells Street and Harrison Street bridges. The park also has an interactive water feature, amphitheater and dining garden.
Minnesota STILLWATER – Completion of the Zephyr Theatre is planned for 2020. Housed in the former Zephyr train depot along the shores of the St. Croix River, the 330seat, three-story auditorium will host at least six shows produced by its own professional theater company each season and also will present occasional music concerts, dance performances and touring productions.
Missouri BRANSON – Silver Dollar City in 2020 will celebrate its 60th anniversary with Mystic River Falls, a $23 million investment that will feature the tallest raft ride drop (82 feet) in the Western Hemisphere. It will be the highlight of a new themed area of the park called Rivertown, which also will include Rivertown Smokehouse, a restaurant specializing in barbecue. Providing 450 seats along the banks of the Mystic River, it will be the park’s largest eatery. INDEPENDENCE – The Harry S. Truman Library and Museum is undergoing its first major renovation in more than 20 years and the largest since the museum opened its doors in 1957. Slated for completion in late summer or early fall of 2020, the $25 million project is planned to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the start of Truman's presidency. KIMMSWICK – New owners of the historic Delta Queen Steamboat, based in Kimmswick, plan to resume overnight voyages on inland waterways in 2020. After the paddlewheeler undergoes an extensive renovation at a shipyard in Houma, Louisiana, overnight voyages will operate on the Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee, Cumberland, Kanawha and Arkansas rivers.

Ohio CAMBRIDGE – The National Museum of Cambridge Glass in 2020 will offer groups a new Roaring ’20s-themed tour in observance of the 100th anniversary of the enactment of the 18th Amendment and Prohibition. CINCINNATI – The Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center is the latest addition to the Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal. Video interviews with local survivors, activated by touchscreens, recall heartbreaking scenes of violence, deportation, family separation, public humiliation, and life in Auschwitz and other concentration camps. Black-and-white film footage chronicles the rise of Nazism in Germany, Nuremburg Trials and other historical events. CLEVELAND – Fans can pick up real instruments, learn to play, jam with friends, make a video of their performance and brand their band with custom merchandise in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s new interactive exhibit, The Garage. The space includes 12 dedicated instrument stations featuring guitars, drums and keyboards and a brief instructional video. Fans can select songs to perform from a selection that includes music from classic rock, soul, grunge and hip hop. The Garage, which takes over the museum’s second floor, is a part of the Rock Hall’s ongoing
transformation. The Hall’s new Play it Loud exhibit features some of rock’s most celebrated and recognized instruments, including Lady Gaga’s custom piano. The Cleveland Museum of Art will host an exhibition titled Picasso and Paper from May 24-August 23, 2020. The exhibition features nearly 300 works spanning the artist’s entire career and offers new insights into Picasso’s creative spirit and working methods. The Cleveland History Center in 2020 will open an exhibit titled Women in Politics to mark the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage. The exhibit will explore the early days of the suffragette movement, successful fight for the 19th Amendment, birth and growth of the League of Women Voters, and election of northern Ohio women to positions of power. The new $6 million visitor center at Cuyahoga Valley National Park includes a new railway station and interactive exhibits. COLUMBUS – The Columbus Zoo & Aquarium in 2020 will open a state-of-the-art sea lion habitat that will include large water bodies with a deep rocky pool and a beach-like wave pool. The deep pool section features a show space with amphitheater seating for 300 people and an underwater viewing window. There will be approximately 10 shows a day.
Wisconsin MILWAUKEE – Potawatomi Hotel & Casino in Milwaukee just unveiled its latest expansion project with the grand opening of a new 119-room hotel tower. This brings the total number of guest rooms to 500, making the Potawatomi the second-largest hotel in Milwaukee. A ballroom, meeting space and the Ember Salon & Spa are also part of the property’s $80 million project. The new tower matches the 19-floor hotel that opened in 2014. ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station, slated to open in late 2019, will be the centerpiece of a $187 million family entertainment complex in downtown St. Louis. The aquarium (with more than 13,000 animals from freshwater and marine environments around the world) and other attractions are being built under the 500,000-square-foot train shed at Union Station, a National Historic Landmark. The site will include a 200-foot-tall observation wheel with 42 gondolas, carousel, 18-hole mini golf course, ropes course and three restaurants. SPRINGFIELD – The new History Museum on the Square, located on historic Route 66, celebrates Springfield’s past. Galleries spotlight the city’s status as the birthplace of Route 66 and the first Wild West shootout, an event that happened right outside the museum and involved Wild Bill Hickok.

Take a Tour of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Life Architect created masterful houses and structures, many which can be visited including two sites in the recent UNESCO’s World Heritage Frank Lloyd Wright Serial Inscription
Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio Frank Lloyd Wright’s exceptional home (built in 1889) and studio (1898) complex served as his private residence and workplace from 1889 to 1909—the first 20 years of his professional career. Wright used his home as an architectural laboratory, experimenting with design concepts that contain the seeds of his architectural philosophy. Wright added the studio in 1898 and it was there he designed more than 140 structures, including such famous buildings as the Robie House, Larkin Building and Unity Temple. Guided museum tours and self-guided walking tours of the Frank Lloyd Wright Historic District are offered daily.
Unity Temple Unity Temple (built between 1905 and 1908) is Wright’s only surviving public building from his Prairie period. Limited by a modest budget and an urban site (it is located a short walk from Wright’s studio), Wright created a bold design and used unconventional materials to produce one of his most significant accomplishments. Unity Temple was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1970. Unity Temple is part of UNESCO’s World Heritage Frank Lloyd Wright Serial Inscription. Guided and self-guided tours are offered Monday through Saturday. Frederick C. Robie House The Robie House on the University of Chicago campus is considered one of the most important buildings in the history of modern American architecture. It was created by Wright for his client Frederick C. Robie, a forward-thinking businessman. Designed in Wright's Oak Park studio in 1908 and completed in 1910, the building is both a masterpiece of the Prairie style and renowned as a forerunner of modernism in architecture. The Robie House was designated by the American Institute of Architects as one of the 10 most significant structures of the 20th century. A major renovation of the interior was recently completed and the house is part of UNESCO’s World Heritage Frank Lloyd Wright Serial Inscription. The guided museum tour Robie House: A Modern Home, is offered Thursday through Monday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Rookery Building/ Light Court Set in the heart of Chicago’s financial district, Daniel Burnham and John Root’s Rookery Building is a Chicago landmark, containing a luminous central light court remodeling by Wright. Designed by Burnham and Root in 1885 and completed in 1888, the 11-story Rookery was the tallest building in the world at the time of its completion. In 1905, Wright was commissioned to update the interior design and plan of the light court and lobbies. Guided tours of the Rookery Light Court are offered Monday through Friday. Emil Bach House The intimately scaled Bach House (built in 1915) adopts the vocabulary of the Prairie house, but looks toward future stylistic directions in Wright’s work. This house was built for Emil Bach, president of Chicago’s Bach Brick Co. Described as “semi-cubist,” its plan is a modification of Wright’s “fireproof house." On the main floor, the living room and dining area project out from a central fireplace. The Bach House was designated a Chicago landmark in 1977 and was placed on the U.S. Register of Historic Places in 1979. It was meticulously restored to its original appearance in 2013. Guided museum tours are offered Tuesday and Wednesday, May through September.

Governor State University's Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park is recognized as a destination for seeing remarkable sculpture in a unique setting in which the beauty of the rolling prairie landscape surrounds the soaring artistic masterworks. Minutes from the sculpture park are the Lotton Art Glass Gallery and the studios of Charles Lotton. His business began in 1970 in his backyard, as Charles taught himself the art of glassblowing. Today, you can find Charles experimenting with some of the most breathtaking colors in the world. To finish off the day, your group will be able to make its own piece of art at Art 4 Soul. "At Art 4 Soul we share the visions and talents of many artists from refined to funky and functional to fantastic," said owner Dodi Wians. Start the day in Chicago at Navy Pier's Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows. Day 3 Before heading home, stop at the Indian Boundary Prairies. More than 250 species of plants thrive at the prairies, including endangered ones such as the prairie white fringed orchid. The Indian Boundary Prairies are an important sanctuary for butterflies and other animals. Stories Come to Life at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum Groups discover the life of the nation’s 16th president through immersive exhibits and displays of a Civil War soldier. The Ghosts of the Library presentation introduces groups to Lincoln, his life, and his family through the unique use of Holavision. This holographic technology allows “ghosts” to interact with real-life actors to tell tales from the past. While the permanent exhibits and shows continue to draw visitors from across the country, the ALPLM also welcomes acclaimed temporary collections that encourage people to return again and again. Spies, Traitors, Saboteurs: Fear and Freedom in America a critically acclaimed, national touring exhibit from the International Spy Museum comes to the ALPLM. Spies, Traitors, Saboteurs reveals nine major events in history when Americans were threatened by enemies within United States borders. This exhibit depicts how the government and the public responded, highlighting the evolution of U.S. counterintelligence and homeland security efforts, as well as examining the challenge of securing our nation without compromising the civil liberties upon which it was founded. For this exhibit run only, the professional historians, researchers and storytellers at the
ALPLM are also creating an exclusive new segment called “Spies in the Civil War” revealing a fascinating, largely untold history of the war between the states. The exhibit opens Friday March 27, 2020 in the Illinois Gallery at the ALPLM. There is so much to see and do at the ALPLM, groups will have more than enough to keep them entertained. This one-of-a-kind region showcases historic Route 66 and the extraordinary Great River Road
Route 66 When you’re cruising down Route 66 and hunger strikes, visit one of the oldest American restaurants on the legendary highway. The Ariston Café in Litchfield opened its doors in 1924 and is one of the oldest continuallyoperational Route 66 restaurants. Another venerable stop is Doc’s Soda Fountain in Girard, which was established in 1884. The original soda fountain was added in 1929 and today, Doc’s offers old-fashioned sodas, breakfast, lunch, dinner, pies and ice cream.
Henry’s Rabbit Ranch in Staunton is a roadside wonder that lets travelers take a trip back to yesteryear with its collection of highway and trucking memorabilia and historic vehicles including a collection of Volkswagen Rabbits. Henry’s is also home to actual rabbits, some of who have been trained to perform tricks. Another fun stop is the Pink Elephant Antique Mall in Livingston, a mall that boasts larger than life sculptures including a pink elephant, the iconic Muffler Man, Uniroyal Gal and even the Twistee Treat, which is also an antique diner. The mall also features two floors of antiques with a wide range of merchandise from more than 50 vendors, a retro ice cream shop and a fudge and candy shop. For an Instagram-worthy group photo, the World’s Largest Catsup Bottle in Collinsville provides a perfect backdrop. A 170-foot-tall refurbished water tower, the Catsup Bottle was built in 1949 and is recognized the world over as an excellent example of 20th century roadside Americana. Great River Road On a guided tour at the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site in Hartford, travelers can follow the trail taken by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark who explored the western United States from 1803 to 1804. This location is
National Trail Site No. 1 on the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail and is at the southern end of the meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Route. For a spectacular view of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers and the surrounding village of Hartford, visitors can ascend the Lewis & Clark Confluence Tower that stands 180 feet tall. Not to be outdone, the new Grafton Sky Tour aerial lift at Aerie’s Resort and Winery enables guests to soar over the Mississippi bluffs and enjoy breathtaking views. At the resort, visitors can tour the winery and enjoy wine tastings, fine dining and live entertainment. Another outstanding stop near Grafton is Pere Marquette State Park, an 8,050-acre protected area along the Illinois River that is the largest state park in Illinois. Visiting the historic Village of Elsah is akin to taking a journey back in time. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Elsah’s impeccably preserved buildings and quiet surroundings give visitors a glimpse of the past thanks to its quaint stone houses, lush gardens, cozy inns and homestyle eateries.

The company’s investors, who are passionate about private passenger rail and the nostalgia that accompanies it, purchased some of the past’s finest railcars and tirelessly worked to restore these gems of railroad engineering. These restorations have not only made these cars more aesthetically pleasing than they were back in the 1950s, they are also more comfortable. Alluring Vintage Trains By offering a Dome Car and a companion Sleeping Car, The Cincinnati Railway Company
can accommodate groups as small as four and as large as 24. A custom charter excursion can be designed to meet almost any need. Moonlight Dome is a 1947 all-stainlesssteel streamliner dome car. It is one of only a handful of streamliner domes available for charter in the United States. Moonlight Dome was recently totally remodeled and upgraded, making it one of the premier dome cars in the nation. The car’s three two-bed suites are the largest in the industry, featuring twin fold-down single beds. Each stateroom has a closet and full restroom. COLORADO SPRINGS—After 126 years of operation, the Pikes Peak Cog Railway has undergone a major evaluation and is being completely reimagined in 2021 with updated cars and a new Pikes Peak Summit Complex that will offer stunning 14,115-foot panoramic views. STEAMBOAT SPRINGS—Guests visiting Steamboat this winter will enjoy the new gondola, which will expand uphill capacity from the base area by nearly 40 percent. The new gondola will also provide a more seamless experience with cabins flush to the ground, allowing riders to walk straight on as opposed to stepping up to get into the cabin. COPPER MOUNTAIN—Copper Mountain visitors can explore 273 acres of expert terrain on Tucker Mountain with the new Three Bears Chairlift for the 2019-2020 season. This threeperson fixed grip lift, topping out at 12,421 feet, will access terrain that was previously accessible via Snowcat or hiking only and provide stunning views of the surrounding area. Copper Mountain has also begun construction on a new 127-room, four-story hotel with anticipated completion as early as 2020. The Creekside Hotel will feature an outdoor patio nestled along West Ten Mile Creek complete with fire pits and hot tubs.
MANHATTAN— Manhattan’s 55,000square-foot Dream Car Museum features an eclectic mix of early roadsters, muscle cars and exotics. Cruise on down to Route 66 in the state’s far southeast corner to Decades of Wheels. The new downtown Baxter Springs complex includes the Café on the Route restaurant, a Route 66-themed arcade, dessert bar and bed & breakfast inn. The Decades of Wheels Museum will showcase collectible cars and motorcycles from the early 1900s to the 21st century. ABILENE—The Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum has unveiled 25,000 square feet of new exhibits with technological components, artifacts and new stories that explore Eisenhower’s pre-WWII career assignments. One new interactive feature tells the story of “Becoming Ike and Mamie.” Another interactive helps visitors understand the impacts of the Cold War during the Eisenhower Administration. Using newly digitized and never-before-seen footage from the National Archives, new mini-theaters offer visitors the opportunity to hear Ike’s words firsthand on events and issues from D-Day to world peace.
Idaho BOISE—Zoo Boise finished a 2.5-acre, $8.9 million expansion in July 2019. The Gorongosa expansion includes wild African dogs, baboons, Nile crocodiles and hyenas. Proceeds from each zoo admission contribute to a conservation fund supporting endangered species, and over $2 million has been donated to date. 64

RAPID CITY—City of Presidents, a series of life-size bronze statues of U.S. presidents along the streets and sidewalks of downtown Rapid City, just added a statue of the 44th president, Barack Obama. Created by local sculptor James Van Nuys, it portrays Obama at his first inauguration, with the president and his daughter Sasha both waving to the crowd. The City of Presidents project began in 2000 to honor the legacy of the American presidency. Each of the sculptures is privately funded, and the pattern of placement was chosen to maintain a coherent structure and eliminate any sense of favoritism or political gain. The statues serve as the gateway to the nation’s most famous presidential shrine: Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
LINCOLN—The 49-room Kindler Hotel blends the spirit of Lincoln’s heritage, neoclassical architecture, and sophisticated accommodations to create a boutique hotel experience Lincoln has never seen. CHEYENNE—Wyoming Parks and Cultural Resources opened the Quebec 01 Missile Alert Facility just north of Cheyenne in August 2019. This new Cold War attraction will highlight the role played by FE Warren Air Force Base and its nuclear deterrent mission. The site will offer the opportunity to see a military installation that was “hidden in plain sight” and controlled one of the most destructive nuclear weapons ever built by the United States. After being closed for a four-year restoration and rehabilitation project, the Wyoming State Capitol is now open to the public. A beautiful example of Renaissance Revival architecture, the Wyoming Capitol building was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987. During the renovation, arches, ceilings and windows were brought back to their original, grand heights. Workers discovered several historical gems, including brass panels from an antique elevator, several covered vault doors, Corinthian-style columns, an original 1888 trompe l’oeil painting and more than 20 original skylights.

Alaska Victory Cruise Lines, operated by American Queen Steamboat Company, is building its third vessel, the 200-passenger Ocean Victory. The ship will sail in Alaska on seven- to 10-night voyages through September 2021. SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Zoo announced a $69 million new children’s zoo to be completed in Spring 2021. The new exhibit will give kids greater opportunities to discover the natural world through play and will be designed to help children develop empathy and better understand and identify with wildlife. Families will be able to venture through four ecosystems—communities of plants and animals that have unique adaptations for their environment. More than 100 species will reside on the 2.3-acre space. VENTURA COUNTY – From October 2019 through April 2020, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library will be home to Egypt’s Lost Cities. This exhibition contains monumental statues, religious images carved in stone, exquisite jewelry and more; all lost more than 1,200 years ago to the rising tide of the Mediterranean Sea, only to be found two decades ago by underwater archaeologist Franck Goddio.
Nevada BOULDER CITY – After several successful seasons of springtime operations, Rail Explorers, the family-friendly, outdoor-adventure attraction featuring pedal-powered rail bikes, began year-round tours in October 2019. Located in Boulder City, Nevada, Rail Explorers offers exhilarating, guided excursions in two- or four-seat rail bikes along the same tracks used during construction of the dam. All rides start at the Nevada State Railroad Museum and continue downhill to Railroad Pass. 70

Oregon BEND – Mt. Bachelor, one of the largest ski resorts in the U.S., is currently adding to its learning and family terrain with the addition of the new Woodward Mountain Park. The additions include three new lifts (two surface lifts and one fixed grip quad) and three different venues, each designed specifically for learners, experimenters and performers. Mt. Bachelor’s Sunrise Lodge base area was also remodeled in order to elevate architecture as well as streamline mountain processes. EUGENE – Historic Hayward Field, on the campus of the University of Oregon, is scheduled to complete its renovations in 2020. The renovations will be completed in time for Hayward Field to host the NCAA Track & Field meets, the 2020 Olympic Trials for Track & Field and in 2021, the World Championships with athletes from 200 countries. 20x21 Mural Project is a collaboration between the Lane Arts Council and the Eugene Arts & Business Alliance to install 20 murals around downtown Eugene painted by international artists. SEASIDE – The Seaside Civic & Convention Center recently finished a $15 million renovation. Renovations and upgrades to ballrooms, offices, the lobby, lighting, storage and more are among the major changes, as the facility grew from 46,000 square feet to 55,000 square feet.
Washington ENUMCLAW – The new Thunder Dome Car Museum recently opened and features a wide array of classic American muscle cars, vintage sports cars, and exotic imports. The museum features more than 80 classic vehicles spanning five decades of automotive history. Thunder Dome’s collection highlights unique Hotrods and muscle cars from a private collection and includes both domestic and foreign manufacturers. SEATTLE – Started in Spring of 2019 and with plans to finish sometime in 2024, the Waterfront Seattle Program aims at transforming Seattle's central waterfront. The project includes the removal of both the Alaskan Way viaduct and the replacement of the Elliott Bay seawall as well as the important utility infrastructure and implementation of new Alaskan Way and Elliott Way surface streets.

LAS VEGAS – The soon-to-be Las Vegas Raiders are scheduled to open their new stadium on the Las Vegas Strip prior to the beginning of the 2020 NFL season. Construction of the $1.8 billion stadium, named Allegiant Stadium, began in September of 2017 and is scheduled to cover 62 acres and hold a capacity of 65,000 for football games. The stadium will serve as the home for both the Raiders and the UNLV Rebels football program. It will also host the annual Las Vegas Bowl.
