Melissa McCullough Welcome to the summer 2023/24 edition of Peninsula Kids magazine. That’s a wrap on another school year! I remember when I was 15-yearsold and working at my first job, “Connoisseur pizza, pick up or delivery?”, one of my older coworkers, (I have to laugh here because I think he was about 30-ish which means I’m pretty much ancient right now), said to me, “Take your time growing up, because when you’re my age the years go by more quickly.” I’m pretty sure I scoffed a teenage scoff at the time, but boy was he right. These years are flying! Why does it feel that way?

This is what WebMD says, “Some say it's related to how long we have lived – a 5-year-old feels a year is long because it makes up 20% of their life. Others point to changes in the brain. A 2019 research paper suggests our ability to process visual information slows with age; we perceive fewer mental images, and time feels like it's speeding up.”

reating precious memories of your newborn at home can be a rewarding and heartwarming experience. Whether you're a photography enthusiast or just want to capture those special moments, these tips will help you achieve beautiful DIY newborn photos.

1. Keep Calm Newborns are sensitive to your energy, so staying calm is key. Don't stress about getting the perfect shot – take it one day at a time. The beauty of a DIY newborn photoshoot is that you can capture those moments whenever you want. Enjoy the bliss of the newborn bubble and don't forget to get some well-deserved rest, mama.

2. Camera & Lighting If you have a camera like my Nikon Z6, that's fantastic! The 24-70mm f2.8 and 85mm f1.4 lenses are my go-to choices for indoor photography. Nikon cameras excel at capturing low light, making them perfect for those intimate moments. If you don't have a professional camera, any entry level camera or modern phone can still produce great photos. Understanding your tools and making the most of the available light is the key to achieving better results.

3. Lighting Good lighting is essential, but you don't need a flood of light. Even in the darkest spaces, you can find pockets of natural lighting. Seek out a large window or glass door in your home and turn off overhead lights to avoid colour imbalances. Avoid using the camera's flash – it can be harsh and unflattering. Position your baby near the window, ensuring the light falls gently on their face for a soft and beautiful glow.

5. Posing (Keep It Natural and Safe) Opt for safe and simple poses, especially if you're not a professional photographer. Avoid forcing your baby into unnatural positions and always prioritise safety. Classic poses like swaddling or simply laying on a blanket are both adorable and safe. Remember to capture the tiny details, like eyelashes and tiny milk spots. To capture wideawake moments, shoot right after a feed when your baby is calm and making eye contact.

6. Print Your Photos No matter how you capture your newborn's moments, remember to print your photos. It's an investment in preserving memories that can't be overstated. Hard drives can fail, but printed photos are tangible treasures that will last a lifetime. So, while you're at home, make the most of it and decorate your walls and photo albums with your beautiful newborn photos.

Bonus Tips: • To get your baby to sleep, keep the room warm and use white noise to soothe them. • Engage older siblings in the photoshoot by encouraging interaction and capturing genuine moments. • Don't forget to take a family photo – most cameras have a self-timer option. Focus on the love you share and the baby you adore. If you have a safe outdoor space, consider taking some photos in natural light. Morning or sunset provides the best lighting, and even your backyard can make a lovely backdrop.

4. Props (Keep It Simple) When it comes to props, simplicity is your best friend. A fluffy blanket, a few scarves, or baby wraps can work wonders. Skip elaborate costumes and accessories, as you want to capture your baby's pure essence. Everyday items in your baby's nursery, like a favourite teddy bear or a soft baby blanket, can be wonderful props. Experiment with different spots in your home for various looks.

Nikon Creator and artist, Bobbi comes with years of experience across a variety of mediums - traditional painting, digital illustration, graphic design and portrait photography. As a mum of four, motherhood is her biggest inspiration for her art and she knows the best techniques to create a heart-warming and memorable shoot the whole family can enjoy.

The

Biggest

By healthdirect.gov.au Fewer Australians are seeking to tan their skin which is great news, but research by Cancer Council Australia shows that more than 50% of people still have a tan from sun exposure, a common sign of sundamaged skin. Heather Walker, chair of the Skin Cancer Committee at Cancer Council Australia, says, “The most likely culprit [of this] is incidental sun exposure as Australians go about their daily activities.” “It’s important for all Australians to use sun protection whenever the UV [ultraviolet] level is 3 or above.” Two in three Australians will receive a skin cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. It’s important to know how to best protect yourself from the sun all year. Here are seven common mistakes people make when it comes to sunscreen and how to fix them. Mistake

1

Skipping sun protection on windy, cloudy or cool days. Even when the weather isn’t sunny, you should apply sunscreen. “We need to remind Australians that it’s UV, not heat, that damages our skin,” says Ms Walker. “You can get skin damage on a cloudy or cool day if the UV is 3 or above.” UV radiation comes from the sun and is the major cause of skin damage and skin cancer. This means most Australians should apply sunscreen every day of the year. To find out what the UV factor is in your area, you could use a mobile app. The Australian Government’s Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) has teamed up with Cancer Council Victoria and the Australian Bureau of Meteorology to create the SunSmart Global UV app. The app allows you to check the UV level of your local area in Australia and when you’re overseas. The app is free to download on the Apple App Store or Google Play. Mistake

2

Thinking sunscreen will lower your vitamin D levels. Studies have shown that using sunscreen hardly impacts on vitamin D levels over time. Most of us get enough vitamin D through incidental sun exposure when the UV level reaches 3 and above. If you live where the UV level dips below 3 in winter, you can top up your vitamin D by spending time outside in the middle of the day. 12 Peninsula Kids – –Summer Spring 2023 2023/24

Sunscreen Mistakes

THAT YOU CAN MAKE . . .

Mistake

3

Going sunscreen-free while walking the dog. UV damage to your skin doesn’t only happen when you’re at the beach. Next time you’re gardening, walking the dog or picnicking with mates, keep the sunscreen handy. Mistake

4

Not applying enough sunscreen. You need at least one teaspoon of sunscreen per limb. That’s one for the front of the body, one for the back and one for the head. In total, it’s around 35ml, or seven teaspoons. Mistake

5

Forgetting to reapply sunscreen every two hours or after swimming. You should slop on sunscreen every two hours. You should also reapply it after swimming, sweating or towel drying. This is regardless of what the label says; 'water resistant SPF 50+', for example. Mistake

6

Relying on SPF makeup. Unless it's SPF 30 or higher, you should apply sunscreen under your makeup if you're going outside and the UV level is 3 or higher. Mistake

7

Using only sunscreen. Think 'slip, slop, slap' (that's slip on a T-shirt, slop on your sunscreen and slap on a hat). Sunscreen is far from the only protection you need. Apply sunscreen along with protective clothing, shade, a broadbrimmed hat and sunglasses.

any people may be celebrating their first Christmas with a new partner and have no idea how to introduce their children to the new person in their life. Some people will do it well, and others will do it badly, simply because they didn't give the introduction or the situation the care, thought and preparation that it needed. Sadly, this means that many families will endure a very difficult festive season and experience heart-wrenching issues into the future. Introducing your children to a new partner is a significant step in any relationship and it requires careful consideration to ensure the children's wellbeing and comfort. It is important to understand that there are some simple steps you can take to help you introduce your child to a new partner in a positive and supportive way. STEPS TO HELP EVERYONE INVOLVED TO GET ALONG

1Timing is important

3Prepare your children

2Prepare your new partner

4Make the first meeting comfortable

Timing really matters when introducing a new partner to the kids. Make sure the new relationship is solid and that you and your new partner are really connected, and that you feel the relationship is going to last. This is critically important so the children don't get confused.

It is important that your new partner understands your children and has good insight into who they are and what they are all about.

Communicate with your new partner. Have an open conversation with them about all of your children's likes, personality, schooling and interests so they can understand your children and are able to relate and build a meaningful connection with them.

It is equally important to prepare your children to meet your new partner. Have a conversation with them about your partner Be open and let them ask questions. Assure them your new partner will not be replacing the other parent. Explain why your new partner is special to you. This helps your children to understand how the new partner will fit in.

Choose something easy for the first meeting. Do something relaxed that the children will enjoy for the first meeting, so there is as little pressure as possible. This gives everyone a chance to meet properly and relax.

5Be attentive

While it is important to make the meeting as easy and comfortable as possible, it is also critical to carefully monitor progress. Be attentive to everyone's interactions. It will take a minute to make a smooth transition so that everyone has the opportunity to properly meet. Notice reactions and allow emotions to be expressed in a healthy way.

6Seek help if needed

Introducing the children to your new partner is a big deal and something you may need assistance with. Seek help if necessary. The common denominator is you and everyone else isn't as connected yet as you are. If you feeling uncomfortable about the idea of introducing the children to your new partner by yourself, seek out help from either family, friends or a professional. This can assist to take the pressure off yourself and make things easier for everyone involved.

By Donna McGeorge

I

n 2019 I remember having a conversation with the CEO of a national organisation who vowed and declared that no-one would ever work from home in that organisation. I suspect the CEO had read and perhaps bought into Marissa Mayer’s philosophy at Yahoo, who in 2013 decreed that employees would no longer be permitted to work remotely as it was more productive and collaborative to be together.

Fast forward to the beginning of 2020, and the CEO had no choice. All of us were sent home, some for longer periods than others, leading to mid 2023, where remote and hybrid working are being fully integrated into the ways of working for most organisations. Whilst some organisations are pushing for a return to office locations, remote and hybrid is fast becoming an employee value proposition that appeals to many. We’ve come a long way from the first “telecommuters” of the 1970’s and there’s no doubt that there have been plenty of productivity gains over the past three years to ensure that remote and hybrid work has proven its worth. Now that the rush is over, and we are settled in for a longer haul, what have we learned that will make working from home as productive as possible for 2023 and beyond?

routine

Establishing a daily routine that includes regular work hours, breaks, and exercise can help create a sense of structure and ensure that you stay on track. For example, some people find sticking to a normal 9-5 work schedule helps them stay focused and productive during the day. It also leaves room to bookend or incorporate exercise to maintain physical and mental well-being.

space

Having a designated workspace helps focus on work and minimises distractions. Ideally, your workspace should be separate from your living area or relaxation space and should be equipped with what you need to do your job effectively. Not everyone has the privilege of a study or spare room. However, setting up the corner of a bedroom into a makeshift office allows for better concentration when working, and relaxation when not.

boundaries

Just because you're working from home doesn't mean you need to be 100% on 100% of the time. Setting clear boundaries with your coworkers and family members about when you're available and when you're not, can help reduce interruptions and improve your overall productivity. I’ve seen many examples of “do not disturb” signs stuck on bedroom doors, and even on the back of chairs. My experience of boundaries is that when people are aware they are good with them, as evidenced by the normalising of school drop off and pick up these days.

rest

If you're feeling tired or unproductive, consider taking a power nap. Research shows that short naps (20-30 minutes) can improve cognitive function and alertness. During the pandemic and lock down years, many people discovered benefits of power napping when struggling with afternoon fatigue. By incorporating a 20-minute nap into your daily routine, you can rejuvenate and maintain productivity throughout the day.

The key to productivity in a remote work setting lies in finding the right balance between discipline and adaptability. Trying these strategies, will unlock your potential for a rewarding work-from-home experience in 2023 and beyond.

standing

Whilst the jury is out, many find that sitting for long periods of time can be detrimental to their health and productivity. Standing or adjustable desks to switch between sitting and standing throughout the day help combat a potential sedentary lifestyle. By alternating between sitting and standing, you can not only improve posture but get more done.

Money issues you need to address after

By Helen Baker

Don’t let a separation cause more heartache by overlooking important money matters – including these commonly forgotten issues.

Amid the heartache of a relationship ending, it’s easy to overlook money, legal and logistical matters or make poor decisions on the fly. However, that can bring more pain – even years down the track. When a relationship ends, you have the chance to embrace your new-found independence and do things for yourself. Including managing money. Make the most of this freedom by taking charge of your financial affairs, starting with these aspects that commonly get neglected:

1. Split finances and expenses

3. Get your best settlement

Separating finances is an important first step. Otherwise, your savings could be pilfered or you could be held liable for your ex’s debts and spending.

Many people – especially women – settle for less than their fair share in a separation. Why? Some don’t realise their real worth or legal entitlements. Others just want to get it done with quickly.

Be thorough – smaller things are especially easy to miss. That includes store cards, utilities, subscriptions, memberships, as well as loans and credit cards.

While it makes financial sense not to drag things out due to spite, your future quality of life and retirement depend on how much you walk away with.

Some could be cancelled; others may need to be retained, in which case they should be changed into just one name. Don’t leave it up to your ex to take your name off anything. Redirect your payments and direct debits to your personal bank account to avoid penalties for missed payments. Update details with your employer as to where your salary (and superannuation, if necessary) should be paid.

2. Update estate planning

Among the factors to consider are: • Superannuation: you may be eligible for part of your ex’s super because it forms part of the joint asset pool. This is especially valuable if you earned considerably less or had time out of the workforce to raise children or care for relatives. • Custody: supporting children and pets obviously impacts ongoing living costs. Child support isn’t necessarily guaranteed.

• Your home: is this really worth keeping at all cost if you won’t be The next step is to look at your estate planning. Failing to do this means able to afford it on your own? your ex could receive an unexpected windfall should you pass away, at the expense of loved ones you actually want to support. • Sale time: if you separate on good terms, do you really need to sell assets now? Could you keep them to maximise value jointly or sell later Update your will to reflect your new situation as well as the at a better price? beneficiaries in your superannuation which is treated separately from your will. The same goes for any trusts, companies, or similar structures that you may have.

Ensure you get pre-settlement financial advice BEFORE you sign on the bottom line.

5. Be wise in love It may be the last thing on your mind amidst a separation, but a new relationship could be in your future. Learn from your current separation and take measures to protect your future self. A pre-nuptial agreement (pre-nup) could be useful to protect your assets. Or a post-nuptial agreement if you already have a new partner. Carefully consider co-habiting arrangements – your place, their place, a new place together? Who contributes what?

4. Live independently You’re now on one income. Economies of scale (most things cost less per person when you’re coupled) no longer work in your favour. Taking time off work may be harder.

Even if you don’t ultimately need them (fingers crossed!), the peace of mind from having protections in place will make any new relationship feel that much sweeter.

So, don’t keep spending like you used to. Be proactive in adjusting to your new situation. Make a new spending and investment plan (a nicer and more comprehensive version of a budget). See what you can and cannot afford and make necessary cuts. Update insurances, subscriptions, and utilities to ensure you’re only paying for what you still need. Set up an easily accessible emergency fund, to cover you should you lose your job or face an unexpected crisis. Tailored advice from your financial adviser can help you make the most of what you have – for now and the future.

Developing your child's

By Emily Mackintosh

T

he North Star represents the highest guiding principle that propels us towards creating sustainable and thriving communities.

It serves as a moral compass, providing direction and inspiration for decision-making and actions that put the well-being of everyone at the forefront. A North Star could look like a considered statement of your family values. For example, ‘We prioritize speaking openly and honestly and always listen to what others have to say’. Or it could look like a guiding framework that your family foundation is built upon. Your family foundation is the interconnected support system that holds your family together. It encompasses shared values, beliefs, traditions and rituals. It may include a religious or spiritual aspect, or even a guiding philosophy such as ‘do no harm’ or ‘kindness first’. Your family may live by an environmentally conscious ethos or perhaps you are a family that has strong local community connections through school and sports. Identifying what foundation your family is built upon and the values that you already embody may be easy if you practise a particular faith or philosophy. However, if this is not the case you can still discover what these values are by recognising your unique family patterns, reflecting on your own childhood and feeling into what feels safe and familiar within your own experience of family. As parents, guardians and caregivers we all have a crucial role in shaping our children into compassionate and morally upright individuals, especially in today's uncertain world. By understanding your family

24 Peninsula Kids –Summer 2023/24

values and learning how to put them into practice, you can help your child develop a guiding North Star to better navigate this rapidly changing world. The following questions are a great starting point to learn more about yours and your child’s present understanding of your family values:

What kind of family do you aspire to be? What do you enjoy about other families that you spend time with?  What is something that you have noticed that you do in your family that may be similar or different to other families?

 Can you describe any family traditions or rituals that are important to your family?

 How does your family support and encourage one another during difficult times?

 Are there any family activities or pastimes that your family loves doing together?

Just by including your children in this pivotal conversation, you are already creating a valuable asset pool of information and insights that are gathered through personal experiences, emotions, and relationships. Children need to have their thoughts, views and feelings included in the process of creating family values and the family foundation. As adults, it

is easy to forget how we once felt as children trying to make sense of the complexities in this world. It is incredibly humbling and valuable for us to truly listen to our children and to try to see life through their eyes. Asking thoughtfully worded questions helps to gain deeper understanding of your family dynamics and interactions. There is no right or wrong in this process; the meaning is made through the participatory act of shared dialogue. Over time you will start to notice a new ‘language of values’ emerging simply by asking different questions and being open to receiving different answers. Write down what you discover and use these insights to express your family’s guiding North Star in a guiding statement that is derived from your collective values.

Self- remembering is about being proactive and responsive to one's state of being as opposed to being reactive and relying on the habitual self to steer the ship (Mang & Haggard 2016). It is the act of recalling or remembering the self that you aspire to be in each moment and to call that self forward. This is where the guiding North Star really comes into play; it becomes a shining light in the dark to guide us when we steer off course or when we find ourselves in tricky situations. Firstly, we recognise our state of being through self-observing and then we self-remember and make a choice to respond in alignment with our North Star.

Once you have collaborated together as a family and created a guiding North Star, the next piece of the puzzle is to put it into practise! This is where learning the skills of self-observation and self-remembering prove especially helpful. Both are regenerative development practices that harness our human willpower and foster the ability within ourselves and our children to see the potential in all that life delivers us.

Developing strong morals and principles is a non-linear journey that requires patience, compassion, and love. It is up to us as responsible and mindful adults to instil these values in our children by leading by example, encouraging empathy, promoting open communication, and teaching responsibility and this is made easier when we have our North Star to guide us. Remember, every small step towards moral development is a significant contribution to a brighter future. And that’s something we can all be proud of.

Self-observing is to be aware of one's state of being and the impact it's having on one's environment (Mang & Haggard 2016). For a child, this could look like noticing and naming feelings and emotions like anger, joy, sadness, fear and excitement and how they feel and move within our bodies. Then, we recognize how they influence our behaviour and others around us when we are occupying these different states of being.

Further down the mountain at Jells Park, parents can find not one, but two all-abilities playscapes to entertain the kids for hours. The second playground at Jells Park East features traditional play equipment including swings, slides and a sand pit, along with contemporary nature-based elements such as wooden climbing equipment and a huge blue-tongue lizard to play on! For the sleep-deprived parents, Madeline’s Café offers great coffee and something to eat, and there are plenty of accessible pathways suitable for prams and bikes if you’re looking to stretch your legs (and a project to deliver new shared-use loop trails on the way!). Local Author Spotlight ON PRESENTATION OF THIS AD. OFFERS ENDS 29/2/24 R.R.P $39.95

Cassy Polimeni

B

ayside children’s author Cassy Polimeni doesn’t need an excuse to visit Mornington Peninsula, but the region has taken on new significance for her in recent years.

‘Generations of my family have lived on the peninsula so it’s always been a second home, but I’m spending even more time here these days. I’ve met so many wonderful local authors and illustrators and we catch up regularly to compare notes and support each other. I always visit Farrells Bookshop when I’m in Mornington, and this year got to sign copies of my own book there which was pretty special. Antipodes in Sorrento is wonderful too.’ Cassy dreamed of being an author from an early age, although she took a roundabout route to get there. ‘I used to sneak off when my parents had visitors to read up a tree, so the introvert urge was strong! I remember telling people I wanted to be an author from about the age of seven, and I’ve had a lot of bookish jobs, but it wasn’t until I was 40 that my first book was published.’ Cassy worked as a bookseller, then an assistant at Penguin Books before turning her hand to magazines where she worked for over a decade, including a stint as editor of Destinations Australia. ‘It’s a cliche, but maternity leave allowed me to dip back into writing for fun, rather than avoiding it because I’d already spent all day on a computer. For me this time coincided with the pandemic and the magazine I worked for shutting down, so all of a sudden I had all this time on my hands and all these ideas.’ The inspiration for her debut picture book The Garden at the End of the World came from seeing Adam Liaw visit the Global Seed Vault in Svalbard, Norway, for an episode of Destination Flavour on SBS. 32 Peninsula Kids –Summer 2023/24

‘It seemed like something out of a fairytale to me – a treasure trove of seeds hidden in a frozen mountain, surrounded by this incredible Arctic landscape that is home to polar bears and the northern lights. All you can see of the vault from the outside is the entrance, which is lit by a sparkly green art installation.

Children are supported to freely immerse themselves in a variety of art & craft activities. Unique programs allow children to imagine, explore, see things differently and experiment with new ways of doing. Build self - esteem, grow confidence and discover and value their own creative worth.

‘The reason it exists – to maintain biodiversity and food security in the face of war and climate change – is heavy, but hopeful too. That combination of science and magic really captured my imagination. My daughter was two at the time and we were reading a lot of picture books, so the story naturally took that form for me. I was lucky enough to win a national pitching competition (Just Write for Kids Pitch It!), which got the story in front of my publisher, UQP.

Fun, Creative after school Art and Craft Programs for children 5 yrs+

‘It’s illustrated by the very talented and award-winning Briony Stewart, and she has done an incredible job bringing the Arctic to life. One of my favourite details are the endpapers which she created using cyanotypes (sun prints) of native plants. ‘The most rewarding thing about publishing a book has been connecting with little readers and watching them engage with the book at kinder visits and library storytimes. They make the best observations and ask the best questions!’

robynsroom.com.au 0404 848 226

You can find The Garden at the End of the World at all good bookstores, as well as Diggers Club stores throughout Australia, including Dromana. ‘I’ll be appearing at the Harvest Festival at Diggers Dromana from March 9-11 if you would like to say hello, do some seed art and maybe get a book signed.’ Cassy has several other projects in development including a junior fiction series for budding eco warriors and a picture book that celebrates science and wonder. ‘The problem is never coming up with ideas; it’s seeing each one through and not being distracted by the next shiny thing. But the fact that I keep coming back to writing no matter how hard it gets makes me think I’ll be doing it for life.’

ooking at fun experiments to do with the whole family during the school holidays? Who knows, you may be raising a future scientist! We’re taking a page out of Dr Marlene Hao’s book on raising little scientists. Her own dad was a research scientist who showed her the joys of science early in her childhood. Now that she’s a brilliant researcher herself, she makes sure the love of science continues to pass on to her daughter Isabella by involving her in fun experiments. “For example, we fill a bowl of water, and try to predict what will float and what will sink. This is a great play activity and also can have surprising results for example, fresh blueberries sink, but frozen blueberries float.” And no surprise, little Isabella is starting to think like a scientist already. “My daughter is coming up to four, so she’s at the age where everything is accompanied by a tonne of ‘why does this happen?’ questions! We really try to turn this back in her direction and ask her what she thinks, and how she can answer her own question. Of course, this is much harder in practice than in theory, particularly when you’re at the end of a long day!”

For A/Prof Orazio Vittorio, our brilliant childhood cancer researcher, he makes sure that his own kids are immersed in science. “I explain to them what I do for a living - what cancer and DNA are, and why my work is so important. We watch scientific documentaries together and I try my best to explain in lay words some of the complicated terminology. They may not understand everything now, but I want them to be familiar with the terms. I’ve also taken them to the lab several times and they really enjoyed that.” A/Prof Orazio thinks that encouraging kids' curiosity about the intricacies of life, in terms of how our bodies function or what occurs in nature, is key to enabling them to view the world with a deeper understanding. “Whenever my kids are curious about anything, I try to explain to them what may have caused whatever it is that they saw. For example, my 6-year old was amazed to learn where rain comes from. When I told my 10-year old that our DNA is 2m long and is packed in every single cell in our body, it really blew him away. “What helps them learn is presenting all this information like a game. I never forced my kids to learn something they weren’t interested in. It has to be like a natural discussion or a game that the whole family can participate in.” Kids can learn more about DNA extraction with this helpful experiment that A/Prof Orazio recommends.

How to extract DNA from a strawberry

Prof Orazio Vittorio

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Put strawberries in a plastic bag and seal it. Then, smash the strawberries in the bag until they are well smashed. 2. In the first plastic cup, create the DNA extraction solution by adding the following ingredients: 2 teaspoons of dish detergent, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1/2 cup of water. Mix the solution gently until the salt is dissolved. 3. Pour the extraction solution into the bag with the smashed strawberries. 4. Reseal the bag and carefully massage and mix the contents for about a minute. Try to avoid creating too many soap bubbles.

5. Take the second plastic cup and place a coffee filter over its opening. Open the bag and pour the liquid onto the coffee filter. Allow the liquid to drip through the filter into the cup, leaving the strawberry residue on the filter. 6. Almost there! Pour an equal amount of cold rubbing alcohol into the liquid in the second cup. 7. Do not mix! observe the formation of whitish, snot-like material in the upper layer of the liquid. This material is the strawberry DNA! 8. Use the coffee stirrer to extract the strawberry DNA from the liquid. 2 teaspoon dish detergent

Dr Nathalie Bock, a Cure Cancer grant recipient in 2020 who worked on bone cancer research, thinks love of science should be encouraged at an early age. “Science is an amazing opportunity for kids to lead their own adventures based on questions they have. You can encourage scientific thinking by including them in a question you are asking yourself and helping them formulate how we could answer the question by actual experiments. Then you can have science kits handy that they can use or run simple experiments at home with materials from local shops.” Dr Nathalie suggests this easy-to-do science experiment to help kids understand how clouds are developed:

Making Clouds in a Jar INSTRUCTIONS 1. Take a glass jar and pour 1 cup of boiling water into it. You can add blue food colouring to the water if you want, but it's optional. This helps differentiate the cloud from the water and gives it a sky-like appearance. 2. Spray hairspray into the jar quickly. 3. Immediately cover the jar with the lid. It's important to do this step swiftly, so make sure the lid is within reach. Having multiple people can be helpful—one to spray the hairspray and another to put on the lid. 4. Put 3-5 ice pieces on top of the jar's lid. 5. Carefully observe the top of the jar, and you'll notice a cloud starting to form.

Dr Nathalie Bock

6. Once you've observed the cloud inside the jar, remove the lid and watch the cloud escape from the jar.

1 cup hot water (not boiling!)

Blue food colouring (optional)

BALCOMBE GRAMMAR

Thriving in a Values-Based Environment Balcombe Grammar School is a relatively young school, but one with a bright future. Students thrive in a valuesbased environment that fosters enterprising and active global citizens. But how does it achieve this? All schools promote the virtues of their programs and approaches to teaching and learning, so what makes Balcombe Grammar Primary School so different? A key element of the school’s success is its focus on the core values; respect, inclusion, optimism, compassion, curiosity and confidence. There has never been a more important time for schools to develop safe learning environments that create a sense of belonging. Our INCLUSIVE community can be seen from the moment you walk through the

gates during the morning rush, where school leaders and friendly, cheerful students stand side by side to welcome you for the start of another amazing school day. This continues when students enter the classroom, with the morning circle routine establishing a sense of OPTIMISM for what’s to come. As the day progresses, student CURIOSITY is nurtured through a broad range of learning opportunities, from Performing and Visual Arts to French and Japanese language classes. And then there’s the multi-sensory literacy and numeracy programs that encourage students to master core skills through active methods. Our inquiry units offer a chance to explore the world through a lens of COMPASSION, considering not only our impact on others and the environment, but also how we can make a difference too.

GREEN LEAVES EARLY LEARNING ROSEBUD

BABIES THROUGH TO KINDERGARTEN (6 WEEKS TO 6 YEARS) OPEN 6:30AM TO 6:30PM

Discover the Green Leaves Difference Green Leaves Early Learning offers the perfect start to your child’s learning journey – from nursery through to Kindergarten. With a curriculum that’s guided by qualified and experienced Educators, the children are encouraged to learn and explore as they grow and develop their confidence, skills and abilities. Currently, Melbourne’s eastern suburbs is home to three Green Leaves centres, located in Knox, Waverley Gardens and Forest Hill with the Mornington Peninsula about to welcome their very first Green Leaves centre opening in early 2024.

56

With the belief that children are unique and so are their learning journeys, the programs at Green Leaves are ageappropriate, flexible, and customised to suit each child’s knowledge, interests, culture, abilities, and strengths. This ensures that children are nurtured throughout their early years with care, encouragement, and respect while developing a love for lifelong learning.

Upon entering these centres, families are welcomed into the family lounge where they can connect with other families, or Educators over barista-made coffee and freshly baked treats from the centre’s in-house Chef. The open plan learning hubs are built with the intent to provide children with numerous opportunities for play-based learning, where inquisitive minds can thrive.

In their early years as babies and toddlers, children at Green Leaves are guided by experienced and qualified early childhood Educators as they learn and explore. When the children are approaching their formal schooling years, they begin the Kindergarten program which is delivered by Bachelor qualified, Early Childhood Teachers, who support them in developing skills and abilities that are essential to achieving success in future learning environments. Green Leaves offer a fully approved and funded 3and 4-year-old Kindergarten program based on the VEYLDF.

In Victoria, Green Leaves embraces the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (VEYLDF), which draws on, and recognises that early childhood is a crucial period for learning and development. This philosophy enables children to step into the wider world with curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong desire to learn.

Recognising the importance of community connections, the curriculum at Green Leaves is supported by activities which include visits within the local community to provide children with the opportunities to extend on their interests. Visits from local fire brigades and police units are very popular, as are walks to the local

parks, which encourages the children to learn about their surroundings, and local flora and fauna. The natural environment is an integral part of the program at Green Leaves. The children are encouraged to cherish and protect their natural world. A favourite feature across all centres are the edible gardens. These gardens thrive through the children’s interest in planting seeds, observing them grow, composting, harvesting, and then creating delicious meals with the help of the centre’s in-house Chefs. As part of Green Leaves’ all-inclusive fees, the children also participate in incursions and excursions, which include yoga sessions, Chef-led culinary classes, language lessons, bush kinder, music and movement classes, just to name a few. While high quality architectural features are standard designs across all Green Leaves centres, each centre has its own unique characteristics and while the builders of Green Leaves Rosebud are putting the finishing touches on the centre, you can visit to register your interest.

BAMBINI CHILDCARE SERVICES

Bambini - The Power of Partnerships Bambini educators create opportunities in which children experience mutually enjoyable, caring, and respectful relationships with people and the environment. The small groups of children in Family Day Care are ideal for fostering each child’s learning journey. When children participate collaboratively in everyday routines, events and experiences and have opportunities to contribute to decisions, they learn to live independently. Family day care provides many opportunities where children can experience regular outings and excursions embedded into their usual childcare day. Offering these planned community activities as part of their family day care program, to local playgrounds, reserves, sanctuary’s, animal farms, community gardens and local community services such as post office and supermarket, the children have opportunities to make sense of the wider world around them and where they fit into this. At Bambini we not only encourage all of our educators to include these very meaningful and educational community outings into their program,

58

Locations across Victoria

but we also plan, fund and facilitate many opportunities for the educators to attend with the children, providing ongoing opportunities for children to connect and contribute to their world and local community. Bambini’s educational leader works closely with our area coordinators to plan and facilitate extra opportunities for educators to take the children to pop up playgroups, intergenerational playgroups, and cultural immersion playgroups. In addition, Bambini provide educators with community memberships, such as to The Big Goose and Twisted Science and community gardens. These provide further opportunity for engagement, not only in the community but also with each other.

and awareness of the world around them and opportunities to learn about getting along with others. When our educators are not out and about with their care children exploring the world around them, you will find them providing carefully planned education and care programs in their own homes. Family day care provides early education and care in a nurturing, natural and flexible home learning environment. Supported by our area coordinators this is the perfect setting for small groups of young children to begin their learning journey out side their family home. www.bambini.com.au

Different physical environments outside the home also offer different cognitive and physical development challenges for children extending further on these developmental milestones and skills. ABACUS LEARNING

Unlocking Potential for Autistic Children The Power of ABA Therapy In the vast landscape of therapies aimed at improving the lives of individuals with autism, Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), an evidence-based approach to understanding and influencing behaviour, has demonstrated extraordinary results in helping autistic children reach their fullest potential. CEO of Abacus Learning Centre in Hastings, Taimi Clinch, said “ABA is a structured, data-driven approach that uses the principles of learning

theory to break down complex skills into smaller, manageable components. The tasks are designed to build on the child’s achievements. When the child experiences task success, the therapist celebrates with great enthusiasm. The use of positive reinforcement makes Abacus a delightful place to work, full of fun and celebration.” One of the key strengths of ABA therapy is its adaptability. It is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Instead, it recognises that every individual is unique, with their own set of strengths, challenges, and goals. ABA programs are highly individualised, ensuring that the therapy aligns with the specific needs and abilities of each child.

Early intervention is crucial, as it can lead to significant improvements in social skills, communication, and behaviour. The structured nature of ABA helps children develop essential life skills, often unlocking doors that would have remained closed without the guidance and support of this therapy. A former Abacus parent recently said “there is an intangible magic that happens at Abacus, it’s what sets them apart and always will. Abacus has changed my families life in ways we could never entirely express.” www.abacuslearning.org.au

GOT A BAD HABIT?

5 KEY TIPS TO GETTING RID OF IT FOR GOOD By Donna McGeorge

B

reaking a bad habit can be tough, but it's not impossible. Whether it's spending too much time on social media, biting your nails, or procrastinating. Whatever it may be, it requires a combination of self-discipline, patience, and persistence to break it and develop healthier habits. If you're ready to kick that bad habit to the curb, here are five key tips to help you get started:

REPLACE IT WITH A HEALTHIER ALTERNATIVE It's much easier to break a bad habit if you have a healthier alternative to replace it with. For example, if you're trying to quit smoking, you might try chewing gum or going for a walk when you feel the urge to light up. If you're trying to cut back on snacking, you might try drinking water instead. By replacing your bad habit with a healthier alternative, you'll give yourself a better chance of sticking with your new habit. Use a habit tracker

IDENTIFY THE ROOT CAUSE Before you can start working on getting rid of your bad habit, it's important to understand why you developed it in the first place. Is it a coping mechanism for stress or anxiety? Is it a habit you picked up from friends or family members? By identifying the root cause, you can start to address the underlying issue and develop healthier coping mechanisms.

Habit trackers can take many different forms, from simple checklists to more complex digital tools, but they all have the same basic goal: to help you stay accountable and motivated as you work to change your behaviour. The act of tracking itself can be motivating, as it provides a sense of accomplishment and helps you stay focused on your goals. Whether you’re trying to quit smoking, reduce your screen time, or start exercising regularly, a habit tracker can be a useful tool to help you stay on track and achieve your goals.

HAVE AN ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER Having an accountability partner who holds you responsible for your actions and provides support and encouragement as you work towards your goals can be a powerful way to break a bad habit. They could be a friend, family member, colleague, or even a professional coach or therapist. It can provide a sense of camaraderie and support, making the journey towards a healthier habit less lonely and more enjoyable..

DON'T BEAT YOURSELF UP FOR SLIP-UPS

Success is not always measured by how quickly you break a habit, but by the progress you make along the way. So be kind to yourself, celebrate every step forward, and keep moving towards a healthier, happier you.

Donna McGeorge is a global authority on productivity, and best-selling author of the "It's About Time" book series. Her latest book, "Join the ChatGPT Revolution” (published by Wiley) was released earlier this year. Find out more at www.donnamcgeorge.com

Change is a process, and it is normal to slip up from time to time. If you do slip up and engage in your bad habit, don't beat yourself up about it. Instead, use it as an opportunity to learn and grow. Ask yourself what triggered the slip-up and what you can do differently next time to avoid it. Remember that breaking a bad habit is a marathon, not a sprint, and every step forward is progress. Breaking a habit can be a challenging and sometimes frustrating process, and it's important to remember that it's also a journey. Chances are, you'll learn a lot about yourself, your triggers, and your values, and you'll develop important skills like self-discipline, resilience, and self-compassion.

LESS MESS, LESS STRESS, MORE TIME Hello! We’re Meg and Lex, two busy mamas and the owners of Mums Village Coast to Coast. We met backpacking in Spain, maintained a friendship spanning decades and continents, and had our first children within months of each other. Neither of us had family (or each other!) close-by to help, and we struggled with trying to do it all. Meg, an ex-pat, settled south of Sydney and first thought of Mums Village while dealing with her unsettled second. Lexi, who had returned to her roots on the Mornington Peninsula, was eager to jump on board an idea she not only needed desperately herself, but wanted to bring to other families. It all came down to the fact that outsourcing is one way we can literally buy time. An extra few hours a week spent with family, friends or perhaps even on ourselves. To us, that felt priceless. You may have been dragging your feet with the never-ending chores list, tired of reminding your children or partner to pull their socks up and keep the chaos at bay. Mums Village is here to help! We’re mums who hire mums, offering flexible work arrangements, to help support our wonderful clients. We want you to leave the mess, leave the dishes, leave the laundry - let us come in and reset your house! During our signature Home Reset, our phenomenal Helpers will make the beds, wash the sheets, fold and put away laundry, and once they get to know your house and where things go - they will put it all away for you each time they visit. Our cleaning / housekeeping hybrid service takes a load off your plate, helping to keep your house calm and organised, so you can get back to the things that matter most. @mumsvillagecoasttocoast.com.au @mumsvillagecoasttocoast.com.au mumsvillagecoasttocoast.com.au

GRACE & MAGGIE A family business based on the Mornington Pennisula, Grace & Maggie playmats were created in 2017 after their founder, Laura, wanted to create a safer, more stylish playmat than one she had purchased at a baby store.

There’s no need to steam clean or worry about dust build up, our mats wipe clean with ease.

Wanting to create something stylish whilst maintaining a whimsical feel, the goal was to create a practical product that parents could use in their shared spaces that was also baby friendly too. A playmat that looked like a designer rug but was prefect for tummy time, snack time and mums at-home workouts too!

Our signature designs blend seamlessly with their surrounds without intense primary colours. Instead, our mats have the option of a minimal fun design on the reverse providing the perfect base for play without being a sensory overload.

Our playmats are hypoallergenic, and free of harmful chemicals like PVC, BPA and Latex, making them safe for the most sensitive of skin.

Grace & Maggie playmats are the playroom essential that ticks all the boxes. Spongy and waterproof, with a rug look design on one side,it’s easy to see why the crawlers and tummy timers love to hang out on our mats. Perfect for softening falls and encouraging rolling and crawling, our playmats are fast becoming the more practical option to replace or protect area rugs.

The Science Behind Low Carb Success

L

atest research studies agree that maintaining stable blood sugars has enormous health benefits. Carbohydrates, whether they’re sweet from desserts or savoury from pasta, cause your blood sugar to rise. Your body converts all carbs into glucose (sugar) and this constant rise and fall affects how you feel. So whether you’re digging into a bowl of lollies or a bowl of pasta, both will impact your blood sugar levels and influence health and wellbeing.

COMMON FOODS THAT AREN’T AS HEALTHY AS THEY SEEM 1. Raw sweet desserts – often marketed as a healthier option to traditional desserts, many ingredients used are just sugar in disguise. Think dates, dried fruit, rice malt syrup; while natural, these still lead to blood sugar spikes which put excess stress on your body. 2. Low-carb/keto/sugar-free supermarket snacks – health claims on the front of packs are not the whole picture. Anything with more than 6 ingredients won’t be as wholesome as you’d expect and many “sugar-free” products have other ingredients which spike blood sugars or lead to inflammation. Things like vegetable oil, polydextrose, maltitol, sucralose, gluten, starches, emulsifiers and flavourings often feature and are best avoided. 3. Gluten-free products – many of these are loaded with sugar and inflammatory seed oils along with a long list of artificial ingredients and starches. Always look closely at the labels to ensure you’re not swapping one issue for another. THE ROAD TO TRUE HEALTH The good news is that making the swap to a healthier lifestyle is simpler than you might think. Here’s a few ways to start: 1. Read Labels – whenever you pick up a product, read the ingredients list. Avoid sugar, gluten, starches, emulsifiers, seed oils and anything artificial. Health

rekindle your

By Brett Lillie

e have a genuine love and hate relationship with exercise. We all seem to know the benefits that come with keeping the body active, yet some of us truly enjoy the process and the feeling we’re left with after a workout, while others think of it as a chore, a painful but necessary evil that needs to be done. Most of us lie somewhere in between. We go through ups and downs, periods of high and low activity, excitement and boredom. It really boils down to how much time, energy and motivation is left in the tank at the end of each day. That’s the trap a lot of us fall into. Based on the latest available data, over 3 in 10 (35%) adults aged 18–64 aren’t meeting the recommended amount of exercise with researchers at Duke University's School of Medicine suggesting that physical decline begins in our 50s (ABS 2022b). As we join the 40s and 50s club, we are often too exhausted to fit it all in so we exercise less, or stop altogether. It’s understandable. Life is busy, it’s often chaotic. On one hand we have work, family and responsibilities that inevitably put us to the bottom of the priority list. On the other, we know we are getting older, we might experience aches and pains and we feel we can’t do it anymore, or we are just not bothered. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Lets take a look at 5 tips to rekindle your love for exercise so you too can reap the benefits that come with enjoying an active lifestyle. 78 78 Peninsula Peninsula Kids Kids ––Summer Summer 2023/24

Shift the way you think about exercise My wife Lisa hates the word exercise and feels it is just another stressful thing to pile on to her to-do list. So she calls it “getting a groove on” and now associates it with being active, jiggling, dancing - all movements that resonate with her - rather than a task. Even Olympian Cathy Freeman has a word for it: body practice. Be creative and be kind to yourself. Exercise should be all about moving with joy, not something you dread. Pay attention to your thinking, your language and give exercise a meaning that sits well with you; make it yours.

Rediscover what you used to like doing Think back to a time when you were being active just because it came natural to you and it was just part of who you were. The past is your teacher so use it, dig deep and find all those magic moments where you were active just being you. What were you doing? Who were you with? Was it a sport or simply a play in the backyard? Was it a walk with friends or a competition? Was it skipping, dribbling, riding, climbing, lifting, singing. You’ll start seeing patterns in your past that can reveal your inclinations and the reasons why you loved doing that so much, why it made your heart sing.

love of exercise

Connect to that feeling Freedom, spontaneity, ease, happiness, success, achievement, fun: whatever feeling you experienced when you were active, it’s time to go back to it and use it to your advantage. When you connect to this feeing, you have a much better chance at changing your habits, start exercising and keep going. What activity could you do now that would bring that feeling, YOUR feeling, back to the surface?

Share it - the power of many This is the oldest trick in the book: if you tell someone you’re going to do it then…you will do it! Accountability is a powerful tool that even elite athletes use. They have their team, so find your own: move with your kids, your friends, your dog, your spouse. Make the time you spend exercising compelling, worth it, something you look forward to. I often go for a quick walk around the block with my wife; that’s when we get unstuck, ideas pop and we connect, think more about what we want for us and our family. Some of my clients exercise with a friend then celebrate with a cuppa and a catch up. Enjoy.

Find your own pace on your own terms The trick for setting yourself up for success is to find your own pace and start on your own terms. Look at where you’re at now: if you haven’t exercised for a while it might not be wise to sign up for the next marathon. So start small. Just go for a quick 15 minutes walk and then work towards small increments. Build up to a hike. Decide what works for you and what you can actually achieve. When you are able to close the gap between expectations (where you think you should be) and reality (where you actually are), that’s where the magic happens, that’s where your true YOU shines.

HOW TO DEAL WITH SEASONAL CHANGES TO YOUR By Madeline Calfas

I

t is super important to understand and realise that, just as the environment around us changes with the seasons, so too does our skin. The cooler weather in winter means a tendency for our skin to become much drier. Less moisture in the air, as well as to the dramatic increase in indoor temperatures as we crank up the air con and heaters can also lead to increased redness as all the extra heat allows the facial capillaries to dilate more. An increase in hot drinks, particularly caffeine, also contributes to this vasodilation of the facial capillaries, and to the dehydration of the skin.

These are some of the key ingredients in lotions that make them an excellent option to give your skin the big drink it needs. Also look for cleansers that are cream or oil based rather than foaming cleansers in winter as they won’t have the same saponins to strip oil from the skin.

As the cooler months then begin to make way to the warmer weather, it is then we may start to notice our skin becoming less dry - it may even begin to lean toward the oily side. Your daily exposure to UV increases, and with it so to the amount of oxidative damage, sweat and possibly even pimples.

As summer comes and the days begin to get longer and warmer, it is again time to shake up your skincare routine. The warmer, more humid days mean that our skin is no longer quite so thirsty, and don’t require as heavy a moisture formulation. Switch back to a lighter moisturiser, and you can return to your foaming cleanser if you prefer (although you can still use your winter cleanser here if you like!). One super important thing to remember when it comes to summer is that this increase in daylight hours and temperature brings with it an increase in the amount of sun and UV exposure that we have. This means we really need to step up our SPF protection, but we also need to increase the level of oxidative damage (also known as free radical damage) protection for our skin.

The key to year-long skin protection is to adjust your skincare routine according to what is going on outside your window. It really is a matter of common sense to appreciate that when your skin is thirstier, you need to give it more hydration. A richer formulation that has hydrating ingredients is a much better way to provide your skin with the moisture that it needs rather than trying to slather you summer moisturiser on in the hopes that more is just the same. It isn't. Your skin can only absorb so much at any given time, and just caking it on simply means whatever can't be will just end up sitting on the surface. Switch out your moisturiser and use something that will give your skin the moisture it needs. Look for ingredients such as Vitamin E (tocopherols) and Hydrolized wheat protein - great ingredients to improve the moisture content of skin by creating a thin semi-permeable membrane that keeps moisture in but still allows the skin to breathe. 80 Peninsula Kids –Summer 2023/24

If you find that winter really tends to flare up your rosacea or seborrheic dermatitis (SD) – use an anti-dandruff shampoo (Neutriderm Anti-dandruff shampoo is awesome for this) instead of your cleanser. Why? One of the main causes of rosacea and SD is over activity of the sebaceous gland. Using an Anti-dandruff shampoo can actually help to calm and regulate this sebum production.

We all know we need a great SPF (50+ for the middle of the day and the beach, people), but to help clear oxidative stress, we need to look for those ingredients that are known as free radical scavengers. Vitamin C is awesome at this, but when you mix it with ingredients such as a copper peptide, think of it like free radical scavengers on steroids! Both Vitamin C and Copper peptides on their own are great at their scavenging jobs, but when you combine the two they work smarter and harder. The more we reduce the oxidative damage, the better quality our collagen will be, keeping it at the much-desired Type 3 collagen which is soft, supple and elastic i.e. softer, smoother and healthier! Neutiderm’s Copper Activator has been formulated to do exactly this - enhance the benefits of their C Scrub by combining these two powerhouse ingredients. The key takeaway for seasonal skin is to keep the routine individualised for your skin and your skin’s response to the seasonal changes. In summer you don’t want to be putting multiple layers of products each morning, so look for the products that will work smarter for you. In winter, you want to make sure your skin is kept hydrated and protected from dry air, so choose products that will hydrate without making your skin greasy. Most importantly, listen to what your skin is telling you!

I NEED TO BUY A HUMIDIFIER FOR MY BABY'S ROOM

FALSE

Using a humidifier could lead to condensation, mould or dust mite issues. Humidifiers add moisture to the air, which increases humidity in a room, which in turn is the perfect breeding ground for dust mites and mould - two of the most common triggers for asthma and allergies. To avoid potential asthma or allergy triggers, the National Asthma Council Australia recommends keeping a room to between 40 - 60% humidity. NB. In some very select instances a humidifier might be necessary, for example, with certain medical conditions. So please consult your health professional for more advice.

Examples include smoke, pet dander, pollen and dust mites. Follow these Sensitive Choice tips so that your child can live better with asthma and/or allergies: • Wash bed linen and cloth toys at least once a week in water that is 55ºC or hotter to kill dust mites. • Vacuum at least once a week to remove excess dust. • Put toys in the freezer to help to kill dust mites. • Prevent cigarette smoke from entering the home or car. • Use air purifiers with high-efficiency particulate air or HEPA filters to reduce the amount of dander and dust in the home.

Experts! Is it safe to travel during pregnancy? Planning ahead can make travel safer for you during your pregnancy. The second trimester (weeks 13 to 26) is the best time to travel as the risk of pregnancy complications is the lowest. Travel by air, sea, road or rail are all possible, including international travel, although some types of travel may be restricted towards the end of your pregnancy. If you have pregnancy complications, it may not be safe for you to travel. Your doctor or midwife can offer you advice, based on your personal and medical circumstance. What is gestational diabetes? Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that starts during pregnancy. If you have gestational diabetes, your body can’t use sugar (glucose) properly. This leads to higher than normal levels of sugar in the blood, which can be unhealthy for both you and the baby. As gestational diabetes is a condition that occurs during pregnancy, it is not the same as having preexisting diabetes during your pregnancy. 1 in every 8 women in Australia develops gestational diabetes, usually around week 24 to week 28 of pregnancy, although it can happen earlier. My son has sucked his thumb since he was very little. He is 6 years old now and I am worried that it is causing damage to his teeth. I can see that his front teeth stick out. What should I do and when is the best time to see an Orthodontist about this? A lot of children suck their thumbs or fingers for comfort at a young age. Although most children stop by themselves, some continue this habit as it can be difficult to give up. Thumb or finger sucking habits have the potential to cause dental problems over time. This is related to sustained pressure from the thumb or finger and the sucking action. If this habit persists past the age of six or seven, when most of the adult front teeth have erupted, long-term dental problems that can arise that include:  Upper front teeth sticking out and appearing gappy  Narrowing of the back upper teeth (‘crossbite’)  Upper and lower front teeth not touching (‘open bite’) Fortunately, at the age of 6, it is not too late to help your child stop their thumb-sucking habit. Stopping this habit can lead to natural improvement in the position of the teeth. It is important that your child is motivated to quit. Conservative strategies, such as a sock over their hand, taping the thumb to the finger or a rewards system, can help. However, if this does not work, your local orthodontist will be able to help. The orthodontist will conduct an assessment and discuss various options to help your child stop their habit. Dental problems that have arisen may also be addressed as it may be better to correct them early. Each child is unique. Your orthodontist will be able to tailor a specific plan suited to your child after an assessment.

BREAST FEEDING IN PUBLIC SWIMMING POOLS

88 Peninsula Kids – Summer 2023/24

By Yvette O'Dowd

A

ustralian mothers are protected by anti-discrimination laws and it is prohibited to tell them to cease breastfeeding, move away to private spaces or cover up when breastfeeding in public places. Both State and Federal laws recognise the right to breastfeed anywhere a mother and child may legally be receiving goods and services. However, some people are under the misunderstanding that these laws do not apply in the case of swimming pools. So let's sort the facts from the fiction.

BABIES ARE PERMITTED TO USE PUBLIC POOLS There are no age restrictions for entry into public pools. While some parents prefer to wait until a child begins their immunisation schedule, there are no rules requiring this. Most swim schools encourage participation in classes from four months of age. Incontinent people, including infants yet to be toilet trained, are generally required to wear some form of swim nappy or underwear. continued next page...

www.peninsulakids.com.au 89

BREASTFEEDING WOMEN ARE PERMITTED TO USE SWIMMING POOLS The production of human milk - colostrum - begins around 16 weeks gestation. After childbirth, this transitions to mature milk around 3-7 days postnatally and is continually produced until after weaning. Some women will continue to produce breastmilk for weeks, months or even years after a child ceases to breastfeed. While some breasts leak milk between breastfeeds, mostly the fluid remains within the breast until the child latches and removes the milk during a feed. Milk might leak from the second breast while a baby feeds on the first. However, mothers can excrete milk independently of the baby and can leak throughout lactation and even while separated from their baby. There are no restrictions on lactating women using swimming pools. There is no risk to their milk from chemicals or contaminants in the pool water. It is illegal to prohibit a breastfeeding woman from using a swimming pool or other public space because she is breastfeeding. The recommended period of breastfeeding is at least two years for each child. Pregnancy plus lactation for each birth is therefore almost three years. The season of childbearing can include short or no periods when the breasts are not lactating between births. A mother of three might be in a state of lactation for the best part of a decade.

BREASTMILK IS NOT A BIOHAZARD Not everything coming out of the human body is a risk of contamination. Human milk is not a health risk if minute amounts are excreted into pool water. Unlike faecal accidents, swimming pools do not need to be closed and treated if breastmilk enters the water. This includes the small volume a baby might bring up during or after a breastfeed.

BREASTFEEDING IN A BODY OF WATER DOESN’T INCREASE RISKS TO INFANTS Adults are permitted to hold their child while standing and walking in swimming pools. They are allowed to sit in shallow water holding their babies and to sit on the side of pools holding their child. The act of breastfeeding does not increase the risk of babies drowning, slipping, falling or other accidents. The connection of baby to breast does not distract mothers or make them unable to support their baby.

BREASTFEEDING IS NOT REQUIRED TO BE DISCREET It is illegal to require a breastfeeding mother to cover her breasts or baby before, during, or after the act of breastfeeding. The opinions of other pool users is not relevant to the legal rights of the mother to attend to her babies needs. Strangers religious beliefs or values do not invalidate the law.

BREASTFEEDING CANNOT BE “AGAINST THE RULES”

So why do we hear reports of women being told they cannot breastfeed in pools?

Businesses providing goods or services to the public reserve the right to have rules of conduct on their premises. However, law overrides any such rules which might be proven to breach the rights protected by antidiscrimination law. If a facility had a written policy or signage implying women were not permitted to use the public facility during the act of breastfeeding, the Human Rights Commission would have grounds to find them in breach of the law.

In many cases, misinformed staff members make judgements which are not supported by management or policy. In the majority of cases, apologies are made to mothers who have experienced discrimination and staff undergo additional training.

A precedent regarding this was set in 2011 when a mother’s complaint was conciliated by the Human Rights Commission. In this case, the management of the public pool issued the mother an apology, undertook appropriate training for their staff, and changed their policy and practice in this area.” The complainant claimed that when she breastfed her baby at the respondent's public swimming pool she was told to stop because of council regulations regarding bodily fluids entering the pool.

Very young infants cannot regulate their own body temperature, so removing them from the warmth of the pool to sit on the side of the pool or nearby seating can lead to rapid cooling. A mother would need to dry and dress herself and her child (and any older children) before finally sitting down to feed her newborn, which would result in distress and a lot of very loud crying!

BREASTFEEDING IS WELCOME EVERYWHERE !

On being notified of the complaint the respondent indicated a willingness to try to resolve the matter by conciliation. The complaint was resolved. The respondent agreed to work with a national breastfeeding association to develop and implement policies and training for staff on breastfeeding by members of the public. The respondent acknowledged that it should not have raised the issue of the appropriateness of breastfeeding and issued the complainant with an apology for any hurt, humiliation or embarrassment caused by the incident. The respondent advised that the complainant was welcome to return to the pool and breastfeed her baby.

NO FOOD OR DRINK IN THE POOL! This is sometimes stated as a reason a mother cannot breastfeed in the swimming pool. However, the breast is the “container” of the breastfed baby’s food and drink. It isn’t going to be dropped, spill open or break apart!

UNLOCKING THE SCIENCE BEHIND

By Dr Sam Megalli

regnancy and motherhood are beautiful journeys filled with joy and love. However, they also come with their unique set of challenges, one of which is the notorious ‘mumnesia.’ Dr Sam Megalli draws on his 25+ years of pharmaceutical experience to unravel the scientific basis of baby brain, explain the cognitive shifts that occur, and provide practical solutions to help new mothers regain their mental clarity.

P

The Scientific Basis of Mumnesia According to Dr Sam, delving into the world of neuroscience can shed light on the neurological reasons behind baby brain. “Pregnancy triggers a surge in hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone, which have far-reaching effects on the brain. These hormones play a crucial role in nurturing the developing foetus, but they can also influence cognitive functions,” says Dr Sam. The hormonal fluctuations can lead to changes in memory, attention, and multitasking abilities during pregnancy and postpartum. As Dr. Sam aptly puts it, "Understanding the science behind mumnesia is the first step in demystifying this phenomenon. It's not about forgetfulness; it's about the brain's adaptation to the incredible journey of motherhood."

The Cognitive Shifts Explained In an attempt to dispel common myths, Dr Sam emphasises that the cognitive changes experienced by expectant and new mothers are not signs of cognitive decline but rather adaptive responses to the demands of pregnancy and childcare. “Memory lapses, decreased focus, and challenges in multitasking are normal, temporary aspects of the pregnancy journey,” says Dr. Sam "Mumnesia is simply a testament to the body's incredible ability to adapt. Essentially, the brain reallocates its resources to prioritise the well-being of both mother and child and while these changes may be frustrating at times, they are part of the beautiful tapestry of motherhood."

So, what are some of the solutions?

the efficacy of these supplements in promoting mental clarity, focus, andmemory. Dr. Sam advocates, "Supplementation can be a gamechanger for new mothers dealing with baby brain. Key nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, B-vitamins, and antioxidants can support brain health during this transformative period. Consultation with a healthcare provider is essential to determine the righ supplement regimen tailored to individual needs." Make lists. Whether you use pen and paper or an app, keep running tabs of everything that comes to your mind: groceries to buy, questions for the pediatrician, calls you need to return. You can also create reminders in your phone to help you follow through on these tasks. Talk to other mums. Hearing their stories will let you see that you're not alone, and they may have advice you haven't thought of. Prioritize sleep. It's a struggle at times, but get as much sleep as you can. A good night's rest supports your memory and cognition. Focus on the big picture. So, you forgot to pay the credit card bill and owe a late fee. It stinks, but is it really that big of a deal? Your baby is doing well and that's what matters. Even better, reflect on the special moments you had today. Did your little one laugh at you, eat a new food, or say a new word? That beats having a Supernerd-like mind. Above all, go easy on yourself. Memory lapses can happen to all mothers, and criticizing yourself can increase your stress and further cloud your brain. By using some of the tips above and understanding the science behind mumnesia and incorporating the right supplements into their routines, new mothers can navigate this phase with confidence, knowing that clarity and focus will return as their journey continues.

Vitamin and mineral supplements. According to Dr Sam. specific vitamins and minerals can work synergistically to address the cognitive challenges faced by new mothers. He backs his recommendations with clinical evidence, reinforcing 92 Peninsula Kids – –Summer Summer2023/24 2023/24

FUN FACT

Did you know that births peak in Australia in late September and early October? This is consistent with many other Western countries, including the USA, France, England and Wales, and New Zealand. Most researchers attribute this to ‘Christmas babies’- that is, babies who are conceived during the Christmas holidays. It’s a rough measure, but counting back 38 weeks from three of Australia’s four most common birthdays - September 17, September 23 and September 24 gives us the nation’s most popular conception dates: Christmas Day and New Years Day!

Creative

Crafting y m d ki h it s w By Debbie Hatumale-Uy

A

s a small business owner and a mum, the festive season can sometimes be extremely overwhelming, especially with the pressures of school holidays, constantly finding things to entertain the kids, as well as giving great gifts and creating a fun and festive environment!

I’ve been successfully running my crafting and craft blanks business, Only The Sweet Stuff, for many years now, and I’m here to tell you that sometimes taking it back to basics with your kids during this time of year is more fun and a ‘hellavuh’ lot easier. A precision cutting machine is a machine that cuts all kinds of shapes and creations from various materials from vinyl to felt; you name it! 96 Peninsula Kids –Summer 2023/24

You’ve probably heard of the brand Cricut and Silhouette before? They’re the leading suppliers for these machines in Australia. One of the favourite activities I like to do with my kids any time of the year is craft! There’s just so many things you can do from personalising all of your Christmas decor like stockings and ornaments to even making your very own craft Christmas cards. We also like to do a heap of New Year school preparation and we do up all of our stickers for the new school year! With the help of Canva (free) and a precision cutting machine, there is so much potential for you and your kids to connect over crafts. Here are six examples of craft projects you can do with your kids these holidays:

Craft blanks are anything with a blank canvas for you to get creative with! Think cups, mugs, shirts, bags, pillows, pens, notebooks, and more!

SCALABLE VECTOR GRAPHICS OR SVGS: You can create cuttable designs on Canva using different elements and fonts! Download your file with a transparent background or as an SVG and import in to your machine’s design software! These can go onto anything from shirts to pillows to mugs to posters! You name it; your creativity is the limit!

WALL ART: Choose from motivational quotes, botanical prints, or abstract designs. Once you've created your design, you can print it out and frame it for an easy and inexpensive way to decorate your kid’s room and give it a fresh feeling for the New Year! My kids love personalising their rooms and this time of year is always a great time to do it!

GREETING CARDS: Canva offers a wide range of templates for greeting cards, including birthday, anniversary, and thank-you cards. You can add your own personal touch by customising the colours, fonts, and graphics. Perfect for Christmas!

STICKERS: With Canva, you can design your own custom stickers. You can upload your own images or use Canva's design elements to create a unique sticker that reflects your brand or personal style. Once you've designed your sticker, you can print it out on adhesive sticker paper and import it into your precision cutting machine’s design software to cut them out for use as packaging, or add to notebooks, water bottles, or other items. Get ready for school!

PERSONALISED PRESENTS: When it comes time to say goodbye to our friends and favourite teachers at the end of the school year, my kids and I like to personalise a present for our teachers to say thank you. We make a personalised keychain, pencil case or a binder for teachers. ORNAMENTS OR PERSONALISED CHRISTMAS DECOR: Santa Sacks! Who says Christmas presents are just for Christmas Day? My kids and I, and my crafting community, love crafting personalised decor and gifting it throughout the festive season. Personalised baubles and Santa Sacks are always a cute gift too and can become a tradition if you decide to do them every year. A bonus with the Santa Sacks - no Christmas present wrapping with one of these babies! The trick for personalising items is finding good quality blanks.

If you and your kids are creative and you do have the passion and time, adding a cutting machine to your tools really can be a lot of fun with limitless potential. It can also save parents a bit of money in the long run too! Only the Sweet Stuff is the supplier of choice for craft blanks for many crafters across Australia.
