The Most Beautiful Time of Year THE CRISP FALL DAYS ARE UPON US, and it’s the time of year we start preparing for the cold winter months. But, in the meantime, now is the time to enjoy the autumn season and all the beauty that abounds during this time of year.

October. Here you will find the Blue Ridge Parkway, one of the most scenic roads in America, as well as the Biltmore Estate built by George Vanderbilt. Set on 8,000 acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains, it is America's largest home.

In this issue you’ll find some great ideas on how to spend the fall months with family and friends. From hiking in nature while taking in the beautiful fall foliage, to picking your own pumpkin from a local pumpkin patch or apples from that local orchard, this time of the year is unlike any other, so take advantage of it.

And no, we haven’t forgotten that football season is upon us, so we’ve compiled some great game-time snacks for you to try at home to satisfy those appetites while watching the big game.

With October comes the anticipation and excitement of Halloween. You’ll find some great area events marking the occasion, as well as creative ideas for making that oneof-a-kind costume for adults and children alike!

ne of the more common questions I get asked as a designer is how to mix metal finishes. And though it seems like a fairly straightforward question, it doesn’t really have a straightforward answer. The rule is typically to mix no more than three metal finishes in any given room, and even go so far as to say in any given home. However, something I strongly believe is that rules are meant to be broken! One of the coolest new trends in lighting and hardware is a matte black finish. And while this finish looks great all on its own, it also looks fantastic paired with a cool satin nickel or stainless steel finish, or even with a warmer brass finish. I’ve also paired black with weathered copper to fantastic effect, which looks great in more rustic or industrial interiors.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

When choosing new hardware for your kitchen, however, it can be tricky to pair new finishes with existing light fixtures or other elements. For cabinetry, one thing to keep in mind are your hinges. You might switch out your old boring shiny brass drawer pulls for sleek new stainless steel models, but if your hinges are exposed and stay the same shiny brass, the effect is lost and all of a sudden it looks like a bit of a mess instead of the modern new look you wanted. In this case, what I might do is either switch out the hinges too, or, if that’s not an option, replace the old pulls with updated brass pieces for a more modern look that still works with the existing hinges. When it comes to lighting, finish is very important. I don’t know if you’ve ever walked into a home and looked up at the ceiling to spy a gold and crystal chandelier proudly declaring

One of the coolest new trends in lighting and hardware is a matte black finish. that the house was built in 1987, but I sure have! Replacing light fixtures can have a huge impact on how your house looks. But choosing a finish can be tricky. One thing that might help you choose a finish is your door hardware. If you have satin nickel doorknobs, then you know a satin nickel fixture would look right at home in your house. Should you want to branch out and choose on oil-rubbed-bronze (ORB) fixture, go ahead! Just make sure that it’s not the only ORB element in the house, so it doesn’t look out of place. One thing I try to stay away from is specialty finishes. For example, in the early ‘90s there was a textured granite finish that was very popular for

light fixtures. This short-lived trend immediately dated any house that included this strange breed of light fixture, and the homeowners were then forced to replace it or simply ignore it once it went out of style. For that reason, I opt to go for classic metals and finishes. Oil-rubbed-bronze, patinaed brass and copper, satin nickel, stainless steel and simple black are fairly timeless and will stay up-todate looking for far longer than their trendier counterparts. You can generally combine any two to three of these in any given room and still have them looking great now and for years to come!

DO I WANT THAT DOGGIE

Choosing the right canine! By Dr. Dawn Mehra, North Idaho Animal Hospital

electing a dog breed that suits you and your family is likely the most important decision you make when adding a pet. This subject arose the other day when I came face to face with a young standard poodle and one of my favorite clients. This pet parent had recently lost his beloved 15-year-old standard poodle to cancer. Starting over with the same breed seemed like the right thing to do; he knew the personality type, husbandry and emotional needs of a standard poodle. Yet his most recent memory was of an aging, ailing furry pet, not an energetic puppy. And during those 15 years, this gentleman's mobility had changed. He had developed arthritis in his knee that restricted his movement.

need—food, attention, exercise—these loving and loyal friends often suffer quietly, likely develop behavior issues and either are re-homed or euthanized.

“Uh oh,” I thought. “How is this going to work?” Training, exercising and grooming a puppy can be physically demanding for more than a few years. I breathed a sigh of relief when discovering that his adult grandchild had stepped up to the plate, taking full responsibility for all of the above. It was a co-adoption. When they don't get what they

The most important factor, no matter which breed you choose, is your schedule. What is your lifestyle? Do you work long hours? Travel frequently? Struggle to get out of the house in the morning? If you answer yes to several of these questions, you might reconsider having any type of pet—especially a dog! They, like small children, require lifestyle changes and interruptions of your schedule. Consistent walks, runs and

Back in the “good old days” people used books to sort through breed types, ambled through the shelter looking for a tail wag or just plain “adopted a dog.” Sometimes it worked out, and sometimes dogs were re-homed due to owner limitations or pet behavior issues. The wisest and kindest pet parents now tap into the internet's abundance of information before choosing a breed. Key points in this are the dog's needs, personality and activity level, and your living space and desired activity level.

n February of 2009, friends Stefanie Nostdahl and Jodie Corless became partners, and owners, of Pend Oreille Insurance Services in Ponderay. More than a decade later, the well-established insurance company continues to provide exceptional service with a personal touch to each client who walks through their doors. The independent agency sells all lines of insurance—from health and life to business, home and auto insurance—working with different companies to seek out the best insurance policies, with the best rates, for each client. “I think our expectation of customer service makes us unique, setting us apart from other insurance companies,” says Stefanie. “We provide a high level of customer service and always arguing what’s right for our clients. “We give our clients those options to choose the coverages and premiums that work best for them. We have focused on meeting or exceeding our customers’ needs and expectations on what an insurance agency should look like.” What Stefanie finds most rewarding about the work she does at Pend Oreille Insurance is helping people find solutions to their needs and helping them protect their assets and their passions. For Jodie, she enjoys being able to help

people understand that insurance doesn’t have to be complicated or scary. “We break it down to something that is simple and help them understand and see the value of why they need it and guide them in making educated choices.” In addition to taking care of their clients, Stefanie and Jodie are dedicated to their employees, focusing on their happiness and well-being. Yoga is offered at the office during lunch on Wednesdays; massages are provided twice a month, and they spend time together with their employees outside of the office. “We believe that if they are happy and they love their job, they are going to do great work for us.” After 10 years in business together, Stefanie says she believes the success they’ve experienced at Pend Oreille Insurance is due to the relationship that she and Jodie have together. “We have the perfect mix of personality and how we do business. We wouldn’t want to be doing this with anyone else but each other.” “We’re like ‘ying and yang,’” adds Jodie. We have very different backgrounds and personality types, and that’s what makes it work, as we

can help each other to see a different angle. We complement each other and respect each other. Partnerships can be a scary thing, and we are blessed that we made it work.” They both feel blessed to be able to be a part of this small and giving community. Stefanie sits on the board for Panhandle Alliance for Education and is involved in 101 Women, while Jodie devotes her time to 4-H. Both women are involved with 7B Women as well as various fundraisers for Kinderhaven, Community Cancer Services, Festival of Trees and more. “We have a really good pulse on what’s happening not only in our community but with our clients. Because Jodie and I are in the trenches, here every day working, we know our clients. And that’s the way we want it,” says Stefanie. If you are seeking a reliable, trustworthy and experienced team to help guide you to finding the best plan for you, your business and family, Jodie and Stefanie are ready to help.

hen Lissa DeFreitas was 19 years old, her grandmother died. She was convinced, she said, that there was something beyond death.

It fascinated her then and has ever since: in her various volunteer roles in hospice care, as a social worker, as a spiritual care volunteer at Bonner General Health Community Hospice in Sandpoint, and now in her latest role there—as the volunteer and bereavement coordinator. She has held the post for six years.

NEED FOR MORE

“This is like a dream job,” DeFreitas said.

OPPORTUNITIES

In her new role, she engaged in more conversations with the community, asking them what they needed. What kept coming up, she said, was a need for more opportunities to process grief. DeFreitas hosted workshops to help do so, specifically the loss of a child— sudden or otherwise. It was difficult, she found, because in group settings, she said, “pain reverberated” for those who had lost a child.

WHAT KEPT COMING UP, SHE

TO PROCESS GRIEF.

So she continued to look for other ways to help families process their grief, and that’s when she came back to the Healing Garden at the hospital. Late this summer, the hospital held a dedication for a new sculpture in the Healing Garden: a metal-art tree, created and donated by artist and hospice volunteer Betty Gardner. Each heart-shaped copper leaf on the tree memorializes a name of a child, with the child’s name and date of birth. Gardner was there for the August 30 dedication ceremony, both as the artist and also as someone with names on the tree. Of the 23 children with names on the tree, she was related to four of them, she said. “It was one of the most touching (times) showing my art anywhere I’d ever been,” Gardner said. “I watched people, looking at the tree, talking about it, sharing their stories, sharing their tears. … To think that something I create evokes such strong emotion is what every artist hopes for. I was honored, and it was very, very special and moving to me.”

Gardner said she understands what the families are grieving. She, herself, lost her brother, two years her junior, when she was 20.

and offers children a chance to process their grief, DeFreitas said, free of other distractions.

“It changed us all forever, and I’m so grateful today that we understand that people need support when they’re grieving,” Gardner said. “Coming together and sharing our stories makes us feel less isolated, that you’re not the only person that this devastating thing has happened.”

“They’re creating opportunities to remember that person and ways that they can walk through it, deal with their emotions, but also experience the joy that person was for them in their life,” DeFreitas said.

The statue is placed next to a large fort that looks like a hollow tree stump, under the shade of other trees that line the path of the children’s section in the Healing Garden. There is also a chapel nearby. There is room for more leaves, Gardner said, which can be moved around the various branches. At the foot of the tree are various flowers, which are the addition of Kristina Orton, who DeFreitas credited as “the visionary of this whole project.” Orton lost a son, DeFreitas said. The Healing Garden has long existed at Bonner General as a place where people can go to acknowledge their loved ones who have died while also having the opportunity to plant flowers or otherwise work in the dirt. It is just one aspect, though, of how the hospice team is helping grieving parents and families. Through a group called Bereaved Parents of the USA, the Coeur d’Alene Chapter publishes a monthly newsletter that contains various resources, including contact information for various local groups that meet regularly. DeFreitas and volunteers also host an annual Kids’ Camp for children ages 8 to 17 who have had a loss through death, be it a friend, sibling, grandparent, parent or someone else. The camp is held near Clark Fork

SandpointLivingLocal.com

Led by adult volunteers, children at the camp do art projects, go on hikes and play games as they learn to trust one another, DeFreitas said, while also holding a memorial ceremony for the people who have died and taking other steps to process their grief. “One of the things that I see for children is they take the experience at the camp and they bring it home,” she said, “and a lot of parents have said their child wouldn’t even mention the death until kids camp, and then they came home and they could not stop talking about their experience.” One of the driving principles behind the statue and the garden is that it is helpful to acknowledge the loss, DeFreitas said, but that can be difficult when the loss came by suicide or drug overdose. And so, some families decide it is better not to talk about it. But that can impact people— especially children—for life, DeFreitas said. She hopes, then, that the tree can be a gathering place for families to process together, in conversation or in silence. “We know in nature that we have times when the leaves all fall off, and we have times when the leaves begin to blossom,” DeFreitas said, “but there’s a place where (parents can say) I can go and see that child is still in my heart, and I’m remembering them, and other people can remember them, and we’re celebrating them. It’s a combination of acknowledging, celebrating, remembering, honoring. It is that whole experience.”

ambitious person, although it takes a lot of ambition to keep this place maintained.”

“I thought, ‘What am I doing here?’” he said.

It was 1977, and Camp Stidwell, on the south end of Mirror Lake, was in need of a caretaker. Vandalism had creeped in, so his presence was going to stave it off.

Nearly 43 years later, Ouimet is still there, albeit in a much nicer home, but even that wasn’t built until 2005.

Ouimet’s jobs at Camp Stidwell are multitudinous, obvious and regular enough that he really doesn’t consult a list. He just does the next thing that needs to be done, he said. Much of it involves simply being a helpful host for the groups that utilize the camp.

“I came here in January, and the old guy that hired me … we went around back, opened the door and I walked in. Cement floors, tin roof, no insulation,” Ouimet said. “He goes, ‘See you in the spring, son.’ I turned around and he was gone.” The next morning, Ouimet—pronounced “weemet”—cut a path down to the lake, chopped a

But he is still the caretaker—er, superintendent, the title that Dick Vail gave him when he became Kiwanis Club president four years ago—and he has no intentions of doing anything else. “Gosh, it’s beautiful,” Ouimet said, overlooking the lake from just about the spot he first cut through the ice in 1977. “I realize how fortunate I am. Every time I ever thought of (leaving), I thought, ‘Where am I gonna go?’ I’m not an

For 21 years of his time living at the camp, Ouimet worked at a North Idaho mill, and that helped pay his living expenses. But he is technically a volunteer at the camp, allowed to live there for free. Camp Stidwell was deeded to the Kiwanis Club in 1964, the idea being that it would be a good steward of it, Vail said. It contains

two campgrounds—Camp Angell and Camp Ouimet—and is expected to have a third, Camp Wilderness, open next summer. The total acreage is 160, and no one knows it better than Ouimet, Vail said. “We don’t ever want him to retire,” Vail said of the 79-year-old Ouimet. “I don’t know how you would ever replace him. He has forgotten more than we’d ever be able to train anybody else (to know).” The partnership seems to have borne plenty of fruit since Vail came on board as president four years ago. Where Ouimet sees a need, Vail is able to find someone to do the work. “I’ve had a list for years,” Ouimet said, “but he gets them done.”

The evidence is all across the camp. There’s the new electrical wiring that was done by an appreciative church group from Spirit Lake. There’s the bridge over a small creek that allows passage to the smaller Shooting Star camp on the southeast side of the lake, a camp that was itself the product of an industrious troop of Girl Scouts.

Walking an undeveloped section of the camp, Vail and Ouimet built ideas about how to utilize another space, one that is near a creek and a marsh. The goal is not to over-develop but to offer more opportunities for the rustic, primitive camp to be used as it was intended to be, they said. It is a rare piece of property, Vail said, one that hasn’t been built up and still has lake access.

Other Eagle Scout projects are here and there, and the recently finished Golden Rule Trail is one of two Gold Star projects at the camp that were completed by girls from the region. Seeing young men and women working on the projects is a reward in itself to Vail.

“We do not want it to be anything other than what it is,” Vail said.

“Here I get to see young people who are really working, and enjoying it,” he said.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

39

Through mid-September, Camp Stidwell had hosted 4,479 user days, and Vail expected it to easily clear 5,000 later this year. The one stipulation on the Sandpoint Kiwanis Club’s deed for the camp states, "It is the hope of the grantor that the grantee shall manage and maintain the property as a public park devoted primarily to the

benefit of Bonner County youth groups and associations," and so the space is primarily utilized by youth groups of various sorts. After such groups have claimed space for the coming year, Mary Vail— Dick’s wife and scheduler for the camp—fills the calendar with other events. This year they hosted two weddings, Vail said, and some families come back just about every year. “I’m like a member of all these families,” said Ouimet, who has never married, never had children. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, Ouimet said he was never particularly driven by a desire to make money. His parents urged him to be more like his brother, and to appease them Ouimet applied for a job in Los Angeles as a fire inspector. Unexpectedly to him, he got the job, and he did it for a year. But he didn’t like it, especially working with insurance companies. He’d had a bad experience with them as a kid, when his parents took out hurricane insurance but refused to defraud the company when given the opportunity: A hurricane devastated the small hotel that his parents owned

when water came in through the air conditioners. Their insurance adjuster, a family friend, told them their claim was invalid because they had failed to put covers on the AC units, but the friend suggested that if they broke a few windows, the claim might be more successful. Ouimet said his parents refused and instead took out a $100,000 loan to fix the damages. Telling the story nearly 60 years later, Ouimet still got goosebumps. Back in Los Angeles, Ouimet worked other jobs but eventually got a call from a friend who had moved to North Idaho. The friend told Ouimet that there was a job through the Kiwanis Club, “and they have this pristine mountain lake. I told him, ‘I’ll be right there.’” Ouimet said that later in life, his father had a change of heart about his sons’ varying levels of ambition. “My dad used to spend his last years in front of his TV watching all these wilderness shows, and he’d tell people, 'My son Bill, that’s the way he lives,'” Ouimet said. “And he told me, ‘You’re the smart one, Bill.'”

Taking the Fear Out of Home Building Three Things To Look For In A Builder

CEDAR CREEK CUSTOM HOMES LLC PO Box 2218 Priest River, Idaho 83856 208.597.1021 info@cedarcreekcustomhomes.ca CedarCreekCustomHomes.ca

“OUR CLIENTS COME TO US FOR OUR OBSESSIVE APPROACH TO FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT. ... AS WE MOVE ALONG THROUGH THE PROCESS, THEY ARE ABLE TO FOLLOW ALONG WITH ACTUAL COSTS IN REAL TIME FROM THEIR OWN COMPUTER.”

onsidering the current construction environment in which good trades are in hot demand and wait lists for reputable builders continue to stack up, it is a massive understatement to say that entering into the construction process can be somewhat overwhelming and even downright scary. Choosing the right builder for the project is one of the most crucial steps in the entire process. Jennifer Knappe, owner of Cedar Creek Custom Homes LLC, says that “while most home builders aren’t malicious or intentionally causing their clients undue stress, there are some whose lack of professionalism, business experience and construction knowledge inadvertently creates less than ideal circumstances for the homeowner.” During the initial stages, or what the builder would call the pre-construction phase, it is important to look for simple ways to mitigate risk. Jennifer’s mission is to empower those who want to build a new home with the right knowledge and the right tools to help them feel more comfortable and confident with moving into the construction phase of the project. “There are three things I would look for when talking to a builder about starting a new project,” says Jennifer, “ensuring that the prospective builder is licensed and insured is number one.” Working with a builder who is willing to go through the paperwork of becoming properly licensed is a good start to ensuring that they take their business seriously.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

42

Homeowners can search contractor licenses on the website for the Bureau of Occupational Licenses as administered by the State of Idaho. Dealing with a builder who invests in their own general liability insurance not only protects the builder but also protects the homeowner. Professional contractors will even ensure that every one of their subcontractors carry their own liability insurance coverage. “Asking your prospective builder to prove that they hold current liability insurance should be easy and fully expected,” Jennifer reassures. “This is a normal process, and a reputable builder won’t be surprised when you ask these types of questions.” If the contractor hesitates or cannot provide adequate documentation, it may be a sign to move onto a more legitimate candidate. “The second thing I would ask to see is a copy of their construction contract,” says Jennifer. Building a home is a major, complex transaction, and the process should not be started without proper paperwork in place. The contract should include timelines, budgets, pricing and any warranty promises. Gone are the days when handshake deals are acceptable. Homeowners should protect themselves by insisting that the builder is taking this endeavor seriously. Jennifer emphasizes the third criteria that she would not compromise on is proper financial management for the project. “I would want to know

SandpointLivingLocal.com

that my builder has processes and technology in place to manage our investment prudently. This is probably the most crucial aspect that some builders fall short on.” Jennifer continues to add that without proper financial management systems in place, homeowners leave themselves at risk for overages and budget discrepancies that could have been avoided from the beginning. “Our clients come to us for our obsessive approach to financial management. Homeowners start with a thorough budget in place with allowances for each phase of the build. As we move along through the process, they are able to follow along with actual costs in real time from their own computer.” People looking to build a home need to take a more active, investigative role when choosing a home builder. It’s about a lot more than just dollars and cents. The beginning of a great home building experience starts with empowered homeowners who know what to ask and what to expect from their builder. Cedar Creek Custom Homes LLC has been obsessing over the details of custom home building since 2010. Their clients come to them looking for a better way to handle project finances, up-to-date energy efficiency practices and impeccable quality control.

Alan Brinkmeier, girls’ varsity assistant coach, raves about Hattie’s ability to train to her fullest capacity day in and day out. “She is one of the most naturally gifted athletes I’ve ever trained,” Brinkmeier said, “and she deserves to be recognized as one of the best goalkeepers in the state of Idaho, if not the region.”

As Hattie approaches the end of her high school journey to take her next steps after graduation, she is interested in pursuing both environmental science and art at Eastern Washington University. “I enjoy learning about the Earth, the life that lives on it, and the great outdoors. And I enjoy art because it is fun and very relaxing to me.” She has also verbally committed to the women’s soccer team at Eastern to continue pursuing her passion in soccer. Hattie said that her goal in life, and advice for others, is to “always aim to be the best version of yourself at practice and everything you do.” Hattie is looked up to greatly by her peers, teammates and aspiring youth soccer players within the Sandpoint community. “Beyond being a great athlete and a good student, she is also one of the nicest and kindest people I have ever met,” Brinkmeier exclaimed. “I look forward to following her career after high school and beyond.”

It is amazing to know that you have a bunch of people who are always there for you no matter what. For me, my team is the reason I keep pushing myself.”

Upon his return to the current fall season, his coaches were impressed of the presence he made within the team. Cross-country coach Matt Brass said, “He trained smart and hard this summer, which put him into the top three of the fastest team the boys have had up to this point.” Gabe also made an impactful decision, not only to himself but to his entire team. “At that point, I stopped training for myself and started training to be an example to those around me. MUSIC CONSERVATORY CELEBRATES 10 YEARS AND FINDS PERMANENT RESIDENCE FOR THE PERFORMING AND VISUAL ARTS BY JILLIAN CHANDLER

I

t has been a decade since Ruth Klinginsmith and Karin Wedemeyer embarked on their journey of establishing a music conservatory here in Sandpoint. Guided by their backgrounds as musicians (Ruth a violinist and Karin a German born and raised opera singer), the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint opened its doors to musical hopefuls, with just a handful of students in the cold back room of a dance studio, in September of 2009. “I do remember our humble start-up when we set out to add to the music world in Sandpoint,” recalls Karin, Music Conservatory of Sandpoint’s (MCS) executive director. “As we had met in a little café, we patiently waited for our coffee to cool down, which took just enough time for us to move away from our initial idea of creating a Saturday workshop to improve general music reading skills to a full-blown idea of creating a music conservatory. One that one would imagine on the East or West coast—but Sandpoint?” Opening after the economic downturn in 2008, the future of the

Conservatory was not guaranteed—but 10 years later, it has grown to be more than anyone could ever have envisioned. In 2010, MCS moved into its current home at 110 Main Street, where their vision of providing excellence in musical training and becoming the “Julliard of the Northwest” has continued to be the guiding light. “The school grew, and with endless creative capital and the deep desire to make the fine arts relevant again, we set forth on our quest for excellence,” states Karin. Today, Karin, along with the rest of the MCS family, is excited to announce that Music Conservatory of Sandpoint has acquire the building that they

TODAY, KARIN, ALONG WITH THE REST OF THE MCS FAMILY, IS EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THAT MUSIC CONSERVATORY OF SANDPOINT HAS ACQUIRE THE BUILDING THAT THEY HAVE BEEN LEASING THESE PAST 10 YEARS—MAKING IT MCS’S PERMANENT HOME.

have been leasing these past 10 years—making it MCS’s permanent home. Located in the historic landmark—formerly the old City Hall and fire station—on the corner of 2nd Avenue and Main Street in Downtown Sandpoint, this is where MCS will call home for years to come. And that’s not the only reason to celebrate. Pend Oreille Arts Council is joining the Conservatory and has relocated to join them in the building, uniting the performing arts and visual arts at one location. “It turned out to be a wonderful partnership as we, together, pursue the dream to turn this building into the Center for Arts and Culture, with the fire doors set to open in spring of 2020,” smiles Karin. “[The space] will host different organizations with their own identities, but the place itself will be a beacon of both performing and fine arts in Sandpoint,” she adds. Plans are already in the works to renovate the historic landmark. MCS has plans to preserve the historic building during its facelift, in which they plan on raising the twin fire doors to create an open-air gallery

space. They are also exploring the option of putting solar panels on the rooftop to create a zero-carbon footprint. The commitment to keep doors open over the years has required MCS to continuously engage with the community and potential donors. “While our staff gives two Serenades a year to raise funds for tuition assistance, our flagship event, Taste of Music, in March is set to raise funds for MCS in general to support accessibility and maintaining excellent staff. We raise funds for our Music Matters after-school initiative as well as honors programs and more,” says Karin. Music Conservatory of Sandpoint is appreciative of all of the support they have received over the last 10 years: Columbia Bank, the Confidence Foundation, corporate and private supporters, plus many anonymous community partners. All have come together to realize the dream of a permanent location for MCS.

Their oldest student, who recently returned to his instrument after 60 years, is 87; their youngest students are toddlers.

Over the past decade, the Conservatory has fulfilled its mission by expanding opportunities for arts accessibility in the Sandpoint community, teaching music with a consistent curriculum 365 days a year and successfully training aspiring young performers. At its inception, MCS offered mostly private classes and group instruction but over time has expanded to include accredited coursework and instrument departments, with new departments coming into existence such as the Theater Department and this coming spring the Music Therapy Department. “This has been part of our vision from the beginning,” smiles Karin. “It is most unusual to have a qualified music therapist on board! A true service to the community, especially Sandpoint being a wellness community.” An important part of the Conservatory’s philosophy is its firm belief in collaboration with partners like the Lake Pend Oreille School District and Pend Oreille Arts Council. “This helps us amplify the desire to keep the fine arts relevant in our current educational systems, understanding the huge benefits of skill building. And for those who are artistically

The art of music is alive and continuing to thrive in Sandpoint thanks to a dedicated staff, ambitious performers and our supportive community— and a new, permanent home. “This is a very exciting time for our school and hopefully for the community as we look to make a dynamic contribution to the downtown economy, not to mention the world of fine arts,” Karin says. FALL BACK INTO HEALTH AND WELLNESS THIS SEASON

Tips on how to make the new season a healthy one! By Mindy Murray, OTR/L, Owner, Kauai Therapy & Wellness

I

Make sure to make eye contact with the driver prior to crossing the road by bike or foot.

t’s time to welcome back the short days, crisp air and colorful leaves of fall. Though the season is beautiful, it does require a bit more of an effort to keep yourself healthy and happy than summertime. When you factor in less daylight and the upcoming seasonal gatherings, it’s easy to fall short of healthy living.

Keep motivated: It is easy to stay a bit longer under the warm covers when the weather starts to get a bit cooler. It is important to find your motivation. What fall sports get you moving? Choose something you'll enjoy doing and will be likely to keep up, whether it's jogging, skiing, hiking with a friend, working with a trainer, walking your dog or taking part in a yoga class. Creating a challenge for yourself will motivate you, as will encouragement and accountability.

Fall brings time for change. Come 2am Sunday, November 3, we’ll have to turn our clocks back an hour, which means it will be getting dark earlier. Getting darker earlier brings safety issues with being outside. In our little town we have the gift of easy access to walking and biking. Stay safer by crossing the roadway at lit intersections. Carry a flashlight when walking or a bike light and reflectors when biking. Despite the law requiring drivers to stop at all intersection crosswalks, marked or not, some still do not follow those rules.

Injury prevention: I am just as excited as the rest of you when it comes to the holidays. I love the decorations, the traditions, the big meals and more. I see an increase in the number of injuries associated with the season. I have come to find out that most of these seasonal injuries can be prevented, so here

are some tips. While you are cleaning up leaves, use the power of your legs by pulling the rake toward your body. You want to avoid bending and straining your lower back. Do not twist and bend together, as this is likely to cause injury. Save your lower back by lifting with the larger muscles of the legs, and avoid using the smaller muscles of the low back. When picking up large, heavy or bulky items (like the Christmas tree), bend your legs in a squat-like fashion and then straighten them to lift. It is important to keep the object as close to your body as possible, and avoid holding objects at arm’s length.

Eat wisely: It is easy to overindulge with food and drink during the holidays. Here are a few good eating habits to carry you through the season. Before a holiday party, eat a small protein-packed snack, like a boiled egg or apple slices with peanut butter, which will help you not to overindulge. Distance yourself from the food table; that will make it harder for you to mindlessly take from the table. I also find that putting a piece of gum in my mouth helps me to stop eating. With these tips we can enjoy what really matters: being healthy and happy with our family and friends all season long.

Dry Needling is a very effective form of pain relieving therapy that uses very thin needles inserted in your muscle tissue to treat pain and dysfunction caused by trigger point muscle problems, nerve problems, headaches, and chronic pain. MICRONEEDLING What is it and how can it transform my skin? By Bri Williams, RN, BSN, Refined Aesthetics Med Spa

W

hat would you say if I told you there is a treatment that has been around for over 1000 years, is safe for all skin types, and uses your body’s own healing abilities to repair damaged skin tissue and turn back the hands of time? First used in 1905 to treat scars and hyperpigmentation, microneedling has come a long way and is now considered one of the best in-office treatments for acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, and more. Read on to learn more! What is microneedling? Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive, nonsurgical, medical-grade treatment designed to enhance production of collagen and elastin, thus lessening the appearance of sun damage, acne scars, stretch marks and hyperpigmentation. In addition, fine lines and wrinkles are reduced, giving the skin a healthier glow and fresh appearance. The procedure works well on all areas of the body and is most commonly performed on the face, neck/chest and back of hands. The treatment includes creating thousands of microscopic punctures to the skin using a pen-like device that has sterile needles in it. The needles penetrate to specific depths creating micro “injuries.” As a result, your body goes to work to “heal the wound,” and in the process new collagen and elastin are created. This helps to firm the skin and heal imperfections. How much does microneedling cost? The cost of microneedling varies depending on the part of the body being treated and how large the treatment area is, as well as where you are having the treatment completed. In general, it is approximately $300 to treat the face, and a series of three to four treatments (one month apart) is most often recommended for initial therapy.

Look and feel your best.

SERVICES INCLUDE: Botox/Dysport • Dermal Fillers Sculptra Aesthetic • Skin Care Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy Does microneedling hurt? Prior to treatment, a topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area, making the procedure well tolerated by most. It is generally described as being slightly uncomfortable, but not painful. Is there any downtime or recovery after this treatment? You can expect to look a little red the first 24 hours after treatment (like a sunburn). You need to avoid any unprotected sun exposure to the treatment area for seven days after your treatment. Mild swelling and occasionally bruising can occur, and dryness/slight peeling is expected around day three. Most clients return to

their normal activities on post treatment day one and find the recovery to be easy. Where can I have this treatment done? Microneedling should only be performed in a clinical office and by licensed professionals to avoid complications such as infection. It is important that your provider is knowledgeable about facial anatomy and the safety of providing minimally invasive treatments. When in the care of a trained and licensed professional, microneedling is considered a very safe treatment. To learn more about microneedling or to find out if this treatment can help address any skin concerns you have, consult with your aesthetic provider.

THE JOURNEY OF FIGHTING BREAST CANCER DETECTION, DIAGNOSIS, TREATMENT AND RECOVERY Article Provided By Bonner General Health

T

here are multiple steps in the journey of the fight against breast cancer. In addition to skilled physicians and oncologists, cancer patients need other medical providers to diagnose, treat and recover from their illness.

cardiovascular effects on patients with any cancer. Physical, occupational and speech therapy are rehabilitation services that help patients prepare for, manage and recover from cancer treatments with the goal being to restore health and wellness to the patient.

The first step is typically the detection of an abnormality in the breast during a self-exam or other form of breast-cancer screening such as a mammogram. If a lump is detected, your health-care provider may refer you to have a diagnostic mammogram, breast ultrasound, an MRI or a biopsy to remove tissue or fluid from the breast. There are different types of biopsies including needle core biopsy or needle localization, both of which are available at Bonner General Health.

Therapy services before cancer treatment are sometimes referred to as “prehabilitation” and have been shown to help patients recover more quickly from surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. These treatments are common practice with orthopedic operations such as hip and knee replacements and cardiac procedures. There is a growing interest in using pre-habilitation to prepare for cancer treatments and to minimize some of the potential longterm physical impairments such as heart and balance problems.

Once breast cancer is diagnosed, other tests are done to find out what stage the disease is at by determining if cancer cells have spread within the breast, lymph nodes or other parts of the body.

Therapists are trained to evaluate and treat pain, cancer-related fatigue, strength deficits, range-of-motion limitations and soft-tissue restrictions. By addressing these conditions, patients can tolerate the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy better, which results in improved mobility and strength. They also experience decreased pain and, ultimately, improved quality of life.

Your physician will determine the type of treatments that can be utilized depending on what stage the cancer is at and the type of breast cancer it is. Often, more than one treatment is used. Surgery may be done to remove as much of the cancer tissue as possible. Chemotherapy is used to shrink or kill cancer cells and can be administered in pill form, intravenously, or both. Hormone therapy blocks cancer cells from getting the hormones they need to grow. Biological therapy works with your body’s immune system to help fight cancer cells or to control the side effects of other cancer treatments. Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays similar to X-rays to kill cancer cells.

Bonner General Heath’s Performance Therapy Services Department is the only cancer rehabilitation therapy provider in Northern Idaho. THE HEALING POWER OF LIGHT How FDA-approved red-light therapy may be the key in treating pain and neuropathy By Amanda Thome, PT, DPT, Cornerstone Physical Therapy

THE EFFECT OF THE LIGHT ISN'T JUST THE WARMTH IT PRODUCES, IN FACT, THE LIGHT ENERGY FROM THE PADS DILATES THE BLOOD VESSELS LOCALLY, WHICH CAUSES AN INCREASE IN CIRCULATION.

P

elvic floor disorders among women are alarmingly prevalent. Did you know that pelvic floor disorders affect approximately 10 percent of women ages 29 through 39, and it steadily climbs to a prevalence of 50 percent of women experiencing pelvic floor disorders by the age of 80? It can’t be stressed enough that while pelvic floor disorders become more common as women age, this is not a normal part of aging. Pelvic floor disorders can seriously impact your quality of life, but they don’t have to. Thankfully, these disorders can often be reversed or vastly improved with conservative treatment. Do you suffer from pain or neuropathy? If you answered yes, you may be interested in learning how FDA-approved low-level light therapy can help your pain and neuropathy. Decades of research has gone into light therapy—it has been found that certain wavelengths of light within the red, blue and infrared bands are valuable to our body’s tissues. In fact, light therapy has been FDA approved for over 20 years to fight pain and increase circulation. Light therapy sessions are completely non-invasive and last for 20 minutes. Clients describe it feeling like a gentle warming sensation wherever the pads are placed. The effect of the light isn't just the warmth it produces, in fact, the light energy from the pads dilates the blood vessels locally, which causes an increase in circulation. This, combined with the warmth, often alleviates the client’s pain. Physiologically, the infrared aspects of light therapy trigger the body to release nitric oxide from hemoglobin and endothelial cells in the part of the body being treated. What you may not know is nitric oxide serves as a signaling molecule which allows the relaxation of smooth muscle cells located in arteries, veins and lymph vessels. The release

SandpointLivingLocal.com

60

of nitric oxide essentially opens up these areas in order to allow for increased circulation and thus aids in decreasing pain. The release of nitric oxide has also been linked to angiogenesis or growing of more blood supply as well as being linked to improvement in nerve conduction. So what is the difference between lasers versus lowlevel light? Both contain diodes (which is a small light with two wires connected to a filament inside), generally made from silicon with certain minerals added in order to produce the various colors. In lasers, the diode is housed in a well-shaped area with a reflective lining that will most generally send only one wavelength of light. The result of this system is a narrow, concentrated beam of light that scatters when it hits the skin. Most low-level (cold) lasers have a total output of about 100mw. In low-level light therapy systems, such as those used in therapy clinics, there are dozens of diodes spread over the pads, and the output is over 17,000mw. This increase in power generally translates to increased nitric-oxide release and shorter treatment times. Another valuable difference between the two is the fact that low-level lasers are recommended to be used only under medical supervision in a clinic. Low-level light therapy, however, can be trialed in the clinic, and if it is a key part of your success in fighting neuropathy, acute or chronic pain from inflammation or other pathologies, you can purchase a unit to use at home. If you would like to learn more about low-level light therapy, please visit our website to learn about the light therapy offered at our Physical Therapy & Occupational Therapy clinic.

chemicals found in wine, only the sulfites are required by law to be on the label. The FDA has an approved list of 76 additives and treatment materials that can go into wine. These additives can be used to clarify the color, start or stop fermentation, prevent oxidation, reduce acids or lower pH, remove hydrogen sulfide, covert starches, facilitate separation of juice from fruit, remove proteins and urea, remove trace metals and smooth the taste by masking out unwanted flavors.

RED

WINE... AND THE DREADED HEADACHE

These additives could also end up in your red wine to some degree and be a potential trigger. Sometimes things end up in wines that aren’t even added. While the herbicide Roundup may not be sprayed directly on grapes, a chemical component called glyphosate has found its way into some wines through the roots system.

BY SCOTT PORTER, SANDPOINT SUPER DRUG

There are wines available that are considered low-intervention or naturally fermented, though it seems these don’t taste as good to most people as the ones with sulfites or other additives.

R

ed wine, more than any other type of alcohol, is commonly identified as a trigger for headaches and migraines. Sulfites are typically thought of as the cause, but this may not be the case.

It is evident that there is something different about red wine compared to other drinks. One study associated red wine with alcoholrelated headaches 80 percent of the time, compared to vodka which had only a 9 percent association. Because these types of headaches tend to arise within three to 10 hours, they are not thought of as hangover-related issues caused by drinking in excess. Hangover headaches are usually caused by dehydration or an excess buildup of acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde is a by-product of your body breaking down ethanol, the type of alcohol found in our drinks. Taking glutathione, especially a liposomal form, can help the body break down acetaldehyde. The work the body does to break down ethanol also depletes B and C vitamins, as well as some important minerals. That is further exasperated as alcohol increases the production of urine and you end up excreting electrolytes. The ethanol in red wine could cause a hangover just as easily if you drink enough. But red wine associated headaches don’t require a lively night of drinking. Even just one small glass could trigger a full-on migraine. Several compounds are found in wines that are not in other alcoholic beverages to the same degree. This includes histamine, tyramine, phenylethylamine, tannins and flavonoids. In the alcohol beverage industry, these substances are referred to as congeners and contribute to the unique taste and smell of a drink. Any one of these can act as a potential headache trigger. Red wine can have as much as 200 percent more histamines than white wine. If you have histamine intolerance, this would be an important consideration. Some natural compounds that help your body break down histamines include quercetin, stinging nettle and bromelain. One congener, called methanol, is naturally formed during fermentation and sometimes concentrated during distillation. When wine companies use dimethyl decarbonate as an alternative to potassium sorbate to sterilize wine to prevent further fermentation, methanol content is increased. All three of these—methanol, dimethyl dicarbonate and potassium sorbate—can end up in the red wine you are drinking. Of all the additional

Organic wines are taking a step toward cleaning things up, but that doesn’t eliminate everything. I’ve seen some filters that claim to remove histamines and sulfite preservatives. Because there are so many possible contributors to headaches or migraines, the best solution is probably simple avoidance if you are susceptible. MAKING A FINANCIAL

WORLD OF DIFFERENCE One woman’s journey to help others, one budget at a time BY ALISON HENSLEE PHOTOS COURTESY OF KUMIKO LOVE

W

hen a person goes to college and gets a degree, they typically learn a great deal about their chosen field, hoping to find a good job, make a lot of money and live the perfect dream life. For one Spokane, Washington, woman though, going from point A to point B has already happened in her 30-some years, but with a fascinating, and life-changing, twist. Kumiko Love, an accredited financial counselor and the creator of The Budget Mom, was raised on a farm in Chewelah, Washington, and lived a normal farm-girl life. She grew up, went off to college where she obtained a business administration degree—majoring in finance and accounting and minoring in economics. She got a job right out of college with an independent financial company in Spokane and worked for seven years as an administrative assistant and accredited financial counselor, helping other people wisely spend and save their money. She also did traditional life things: got married and had a child. And then the not-so-planned life things: got a divorce and became sole financial provider for her then 2-year-old son, which was a challenge in itself, and then factor in substantial student loan debt, credit card debt and a new vehicle loan, all adding to her single mom level of stress. Miko found herself going to work feeling embarrassed because, as she puts it, “How am I supposed to tell these people how to manage their money when I can’t even manage my own?!” She had the knowledge, she knew the steps, but a long-time struggle with self-esteem issues made retail therapy a thing in her life, and it served as an antidote for her feeling of no self-worth. The more she struggled with that issue, the deeper in debt she went. Being a mom was so meaningful to her, Miko knew she had to take steps to work on her personal self-development so she could be the best parent to her son. The pivotal financial turning point happened when she finally faced her debt. Writing it all out on paper and seeing her real debt numbers—almost $78,000!—in black and white was all the motivation she needed.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

Pulling from every bit of knowledge she had, Miko became her own best client. Debt reduction became her number one focus, and she challenged herself to try different budgets but was unable to find one that completely worked for her. Her solution? Dig through all the budgets that she had tried and pick out the pieces in each of them that had worked for her. Then Miko carefully compiled those pieces and rolled them together until she created a budget worksheet that finally worked for her. Her paycheck system allowed Miko to outline her spending based on the money she was going to earn, and then she always knew exactly where her money was going ahead of time. Miko found the new budget worked and did everything she could to stay on course, using tools like a vision board and colorful debt payoff trackers to keep track of every single dollar she put toward paying down her debt. Every line she colored in on her payoff trackers represented not only another goal met but also a lot of hard work. She whole-heartedly advocates using a visioning board to track one’s financial goals. Her first board, started way back in 2011, simply had a photo of a really nice backpack that she wanted to save up for. Now, literally every single piece of her financial life is on multiple visioning boards above her desk, and she marvels at how many financial “wishes” have already become realities—starting with that long-ago backpack!

Another thing that worked for Miko was following her own advice, “If you can’t reduce spending, you need to increase income.” After combing through and cutting out as much unnecessary spending from her monthly budget as she could and still coming up short, Miko then considered her options. She could go find an additional job, but then she would be putting her son in additional daycare, so there would be an extra expense. She weighed out that option and decided it wouldn’t be worth the money or time away from her son. So then Miko looked at her favorite hobbies, wondering if there was something that she loved to do that could bring in additional money. And so she decided to fine-tune her love of photography. After watching countless hours of YouTube videos and reading on the subject, she used that talent and found work as a real estate photographer to supplement her income. It was perfect because it was something she could do on her time off and take her son with her. She worked hard, stayed focused and scraped together every penny she could to go toward lowering those balances. She began to see progress but, deep down inside, she was bursting at the seams with what she was learning and with every accomplishment, every bill paid, every line colored in—Miko just wanted to shout her knowledge out to other single moms. She knew there were other moms out there who understood exactly where she was coming from and knew what it felt like to be in her shoes; women who could benefit from what she was learning to do the same thing: get out from under those mountains of debt. She wanted to share it with everyone! So one night, not able to stay quiet one second longer, Miko grabbed her computer and started typing. Her first post flowed into a steady stream of posts; she began sharing the tools she

was using: the colorful tracking charts, cash envelope system and her paycheck budget binder. Though her blog, newsletter, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, even Amazon accounts, Miko shares her best tips, ideas and tools that have worked for her, and dedicates herself to holding true to the purpose that she believes she was put on earth—to do something great. Helping people is her passion, and Miko throws herself at it with all of her heart. Every bit of communication is answered personally by her and, now, her assistant. They have posted a video on Instagram every single day for a year-and-ahalf now. “Everything we do here, every single day, is we want to inspire hope,” Miko shares. She believes the most effective motivation for anyone is to invoke feeling, adding that “… every article we share or video we post is done with the thought, ‘Is this going to invoke feeling?’ Because without provoking feeling,

there’s not going to be action, and people take action because they feel something.” Miko has definitely evoked feeling. Her fans clamored for more, so she began offering free resources and marketing her tools: colorful cash envelopes and trackers, worksheets, planners and her Budget by Paycheck workbooks that are now being sold around the world. Miko was shocked when she went viral. Her fan base is growing rapidly—she adds about 1,000 followers per day, and she has nearly 65,000 subscribers on YouTube. Google “The Budget Mom” and you’ll find her story goes on for pages. She’s been featured on “Good Morning America” and other talk shows, her story told in endless articles, and currently she’s planning her first speaking event in Spokane Valley (October 23 at the CenterPlace Regional Event Center). “I had no idea The Budget Mom would ever be this big, that so many people wanted to

change their financial lives,” Miko says of her newfound status as a financial influencer, “but it helps me pursue my passion of helping people every day, which makes me happy!” When asked what makes her different than other financial bloggers, she believes there are two things that have made her successful: One, sharing her real numbers since day one. Miko believes in teaching from experience, not by example, so she’s completely transparent about her entire debt story. And two, having a personal connection with her fans. People are surprised when she responds to their correspondence, but that’s her way of making an impact, which she feels also keeps her relatable. Miko especially loves hearing how her advice helps people find their way out of debt, saving relationships and lives— because her advice works. Remember that $78,000 in debt she was buried under? Miko paid it off in full four years later, the bulk of it in eight months after

her Budget Mom business started growing. As of last year, she and her business are 100 percent debt-free. Her current goal? Saving enough money to buy her first home with cash. And yes, that means she’s still practicing what she preaches and living very frugally! Sometimes it’s challenging to make that sacrifice when you want something now, but Miko advocates the rewards that come from being a patient spender. Her goal of paying cash for a home will hopefully then allow her to travel and spend more time with her son, and without a mortgage to deal with, Miko can entertain the thought of retiring early. Miko’s biggest message to those struggling under a mountain of debt is to take that first small step and the next one and just continue to stick with it. She encourages people to keep their motivation in front of them, to not

lose heart at having to do without, especially because this isn’t going to be their permanent way of living. Per Miko’s own experience, the sacrifice you’re making today is going to be worth it when you are finally getting to live the life you really want and be able to do whatever you would like. She might be small in stature but Miko Love is making a really big impact in the world, generously dispensing her budgeting and living frugally knowledge so that others can live debt-free lives also, one carefully saved (and spent) penny at a time. Halloween At Home Creating your own costume

SandpointLivingLocal.com

W

ith just weeks until Halloween, you, like many others, probably won’t start thinking about your costume until the last minute. You can always run to the big box store and grab something off the rack, but why spend the money when you probably have all you need for a unique getup laying around your house? Find your creative side by utilizing some of these common household items for a fun, goofy or spooky new look. The WAY back of the closet It’s likely you’ve got some outfits stashed away that are 20-plus years old (and likely even older at Grandma and Grandpa’s house). Dig out the floral tank tops, bellbottom or acid-wash jeans, and transport yourself back to a previous generation. Maybe Grandpa still has pinstripe suit and fedora for an easy mobster look. Old wedding dresses or bridesmaid dresses that you don’t mind altering can pair with ghoulish makeup for zombie or vampire brides and prom dates. Kids love playing dress up, so why not make them look just as you did when you were 8 years old and “super cool.” Cardboard Many of us have packages shipped to our homes almost daily, and the stack of cardboard in the garage can quickly get out of control. Use your imagination, slap on some color and find hundreds of ways to utilize this light-weight accessory. Build armor, a sword or shield. Turn yourself into a tablet, wall calendar or TV screen. Kids can use large boxes with a cutout for their heads to become robots and adults, perhaps a box of wine? At the end of the night you can choose to keep the costume for another year or recycle it easily at a cost of roughly $0.

Bedsheets and pillowcases

Mimic your favorite TV/movie character

If you are really in a last-minute pinch, a white bedsheet and powdery make-up on your face is a quick ghost costume. If you want a scarier look, cover the sheet in fake blood and pretend you are a cadaver from the morgue. Sheets make great capes for little princesses and little super heroes, and instead of buying a mask from the store, create your own by cutting out some eye and mouth holes in an old pillowcase. Kids who want to hit every house on the block and then some might also consider using a pillowcase to haul all their candy, as regular buckets can easily overflow, and you can throw it over your shoulder when it gets heavy.

This might require a trip to the local thrift store but shouldn’t break the bank. Going as a character simply means finding everyday clothes that match their look. A brown bathrobe, shorts and a bowling ball and you’re easily transformed into The Dude; black suit, white shirt and black tie and your an agent from “Men in Black”; a lab coat, purple shirt, pink shorts and doctor’s bag and your little one is their favorite cartoon doctor. Re-watch your favorite movie or show, take a look at your character and find clothing and accessories that make you look as authentic as possible.

Old wedding dresses or bridesmaid dresses that you don’t mind altering can pair with ghoulish makeup for zombie or vampire brides and prom dates. SandpointLivingLocal.com

Mom’s makeup

Halloween doesn’t have to be expensive, and your creative costume made at home will catch more eyes and grab more comments than those bought at a store (and that you’ll probably see five of during your night). Figure out what you want to be and, before running out of the house, dig around in the closets, storage bins and attic to see what you can utilize for your unique look. Have a happy Halloween, and feel free to share your best DIY costumes with us on our social media platforms!

Maybe not her favorite lipsticks and eye shadows, but those ones that don’t get used as often can be very versatile for the look you are going for. Dark shades of eye shadow can create black eyes and bruises. Mascara can color in a beard to become jet black, and eyeliner can make cuts, scars or stitches. Bold lipstick colors will make you stand out, and nail polish can be wacky and mismatched for a clown or goofy character, or fit for a fairytale princess.

Your Fall Activities Bucket List

FAMILY FRIENDLY FUN AWAITS BY JILLIAN CHANDLER

he leaves are changing to hues of deep reds and golden yellows, and the days and nights have turned cool and crisp. Fall has arrived here in the Northwest, and with it an abundance of activities that are sure to bring smiles to everyone’s faces.

T

The autumn months may be a bit chilly, but these activities are sure to warm the hearts of every family member both young and old. As the leaves slowly make their way down to the ground, it calls for some yard cleanup. But instead of just raking up those leaves and throwing the piles into a garbage bag—the festive pumpkin trash bags are most certainly the way to go this time of the year—let the kids have some fun! There’s nothing like jumping into a big pile of leaves, throwing them in the air or at one another, and just lying in them and daydreaming the day away. Who needs snow angels when you can make leaf angels? And this makes for a prime time to snap some great action-packed photos of the kids. And Mom and Dad, don’t forget to join in the fun. All work and no play was never good for anyone.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

80

The many varieties and colors of the leaves can also make for a fun afternoon art project. Have the kids gather a dozen or so of their favorite leaves and let their imaginations soar as they create their own unique fall leaf art projects. I still remember placing a white piece of paper over the leaf, peeling the wrapper off of the crayon, then rubbing the crayon onto the paper to make the outline of the leaf and all of its veins and stem. You don’t have to look to your own backyard to enjoy the leaves. As the fall foliage could easily make the season one of the most rich and colorful of the year, take the family out for a walk in nature, or even a drive, to take in the sights that this season blesses us with. Looking for a little adventure? Rather than going to your local supermarket to pick out your pumpkins—whether they be for carving or cooking—plan a trip to a local you-pick pumpkin patch. Here the kids can roam around outdoors and in the fresh air and choose their very own unique pumpkin to carve just in time for Halloween. In addition, select your own pumpkins and other squash available for purchase to decorate your front porch or create an autumn centerpiece for your

dining room table. And don’t forget, grab a few extra for those pumpkin pies, baked pumpkin seeds, squash soups and more. And let the kids help in the meal preparation. There’s nothing like preparing meals, farm to table, with your family by your side. Another exciting, and tasty, outing is to head to that local apple orchard. Be sure to bring the wagon and get picking. Many orchards allow you to taste the different apple offerings so you can choose your favorites before picking. The kids are sure to get a workout running about, climbing ladders and picking the apples. As a treat, once you’ve arrived back at home, make caramel apples and let the kids decorate with candy. Make homemade apple chips and applesauce—what kid doesn’t love applesauce? And plan on preparing and canning some of the apples for those warm, delicious homemade Thanksgiving and Christmas pies. Your guests are sure to be impressed. Fall is the time for fields of sunflowers, corn mazes and haunted houses. Running through a corn maze, getting “lost” or finding oneself at a dead end, offers a thrill for most children. And as long as you go during daylight hours, it’s sure to leave them smiling once they make their way out. Most children love excitement, and a haunted house provides just that. Just be sure that the haunted house you enter is age appropriate for your child, as there’s no fun in having your child leave in tears. Many towns hold fall festivals and carnivals, where you can experience a little bit of everything “fall” including delicious fall foods to warm you up, autumn décor for sale, entertainment, hayrides and more. Get in the spirit and make sure to attend one and support your local community and businesses. Many think of springtime when it comes to gardening. But the best time of the year to plant bulbs is in the fall, six to eight weeks before the first hard frost makes its appearance. Bundle up the kiddos, break out the gardening gloves and tools, and make an afternoon of fun which all will be rewarded in the spring with a yard full of beautiful, colorful tulips and daffodils. The kids are sure to be proud of the part they played when they see the first blooms of spring.

IT'S FOOTBALL SEASON TIME TO GET COOKIN’ - BY TROY LOUIS CHANDLER -

Fall is here, and it’s that time of year most everyone has been anticipating all year—football season. And what’s better than watching the game with friends and family than with some great food to satisfy your hunger for the game. I have to admit, I’m not the biggest football fan, but I do enjoy cooking up my family’s favorite football snacks (I’m a chef, so it’s kind of expected of me) while they enjoy the game in the other room. Below you will find several of my easy-tomake football favorites. You’ll enjoy them so much, you might forget about the big game all together! Now get cooking!

SLOW-COOKED PULLED PORK SLIDERS In your favorite crock pot, InstaPot, Dutch oven or cast-iron pot, braise pork shoulder until fork tender with cumin, chili powder and a touch of liquid smoke. Reduce or remove liquid and combine shredded pork with your best barbecue sauce. Serve with grain mustard and chopped pickles on slider buns.

BEST BREAD AND CHEESE BOWL Carve out a fresh sourdough bread bowl, saving the top and "guts." Mix the following ingredients and stuff the bread bowl, replacing the top and using bread "guts" as dipping vessels. Here’s how we do it: one pack Boursin cheese, 1/2 pound shredded white cheddar; juice of one lemon; juice of one orange; Two chipotle peppers with adobo sauce, minced; three garlic cloves, minced; and a 1/4 cup honey. This recipe will create two to four bread bowls, depending on size. You can also substitute mini dinner rolls for smaller servings if you plan on having a lot of company.

MINI FISH TACOS WITH COLESLAW Purchase your favorite mini corn taco skins and fish. Mahi-mahi (dorado) is an amazing choice, but your favorite fish will do. Grill or deep fry the tortillas and grill the fish. Then use this amazing coleslaw recipe and garnishes to make the best fish tacos on the planet, or at least in your cul de sac. You’ll need one part rice wine vinegar and one part sugar. Bring to just a boil and turn off. Cool and set aside. Then mix your concoction with your slaw to blow the minds of your guests. You can also add a touch of mayo for a creamier slaw. You're welcome.

BIG BOY BITES Man up boys, here we go. I have to add that most women can out hot pepper us, but shhh .... Split jalapeños in half removing seeds and ribs. Add a one-ounce piece of smoked gouda cheese to each half, then wrap the pepper in prosciutto (or bacon). Grill at 350° for six to eight minutes. Your taste buds will be sizzling and your mind blown after indulging in one of these spicy, savory bites.

DASTARDLY DIRTY DEVILED EGGS This is a unique take on an all-time classic. Peel and cut chilled hardboiled eggs in half lengthwise (bring eggs and water to a light boil for 11 minutes, then run under cold water or chill in the refrigerator until cold). In a bowl or food processor, blend the yolks with avocado, mayo, minced pickles, and salt and pepper to taste. When creamy, pipe mixture (or spoon) back into egg whites. Garnish with smoked paprika and bacon bits.

BIG GAME CHARCUTERIE BOARD Now, you can stick to the basics of salami, cheese and crackers, but why would you do that when the internet is now filled with farm-raised “wild” game that you can easily purchase online? Grab a large wood cutting board and fill it up with fun items like bacon-wrapped grilled antelope, elk sausage and venison meatballs glazed with barbecue sauce. To that add a few of your favorite cheeses, a sliced French baguette, specialty wine jams and some fancy mustards and pickles, and you will have the best meat and cheese platter in your football bracket!

ASHEVILLE Gilded Age culture and fall foliage on the Blue Ridge Parkway By Marguerite Cleveland Photos Courtesy of Explore Asheville and The Biltmore Company

N

ot many people realize that one of the founders of modern forestry in the United States was a Vanderbilt. The Biltmore Estate was cobbled together from George Vanderbilt’s land purchases in the Asheville area. Many were farms where the land was considered worn out. Fredrick Law Olmsted (design Central Park), who was hired to landscape the property, was not impressed with the 125,000 acres which were in a deplorable condition. Vanderbilt hired Gifford Pinchot to manage the forests on the estate, and he later became the first Chief of the United States Forest Service. Later on, the first school of forestry in North America, The Biltmore School of Forestry, was operated on the estate by Dr. Carl A. Schenck. After Vanderbilt’s death, around 86,000 acres of the estate were sold to the United State Forest Service to establish the Pisgah National Forest, one of the first in the Eastern United States. Most fall foliage destinations tend to have a peak week when hordes of people descend upon the area to see autumn flora at its best. The wooded areas surrounding Asheville, North Carolina, and the forests observed from the Blue Ridge Parkway have one of the longest and most diverse fall foliage seasons in the world. The Biltmore Estate With its history of forestry, the Biltmore Estate is the perfect destination for a fall foliage trip, and you can stay right on the estate. The Village Hotel provides a casual-style stay and is close to the winery and other shopping and dining activities. But for a true Biltmore experience you need to step it up and stay at the Inn on Biltmore

Estate. It is luxurious with interiors that make you feel like you are a guest in the Biltmore House. Enjoy rooms decorated like Gilded Age visitors enjoyed. The staff is outstanding and provides warm Southern hospitality without any stuffiness. There are a variety of dining options on the estate with the ingredients for many dishes grown or produced right on the estate. During your stay in Asheville, make sure to allow plenty of time to tour and experience all the estate has to offer. Your admission includes a selfguided tour of the historic Biltmore House and access to the grounds. There are a variety of optional add-on tours. The Audio Guide to Biltmore is well worth the $15 extra cost with its music and description of what life was like when the home was first built. The Legacy of the Land Tour gets you behind the scenes on the estate while you learn more about the history of the land. Visit the Outdoor Adventure Center to book fun outside activities, many you won’t see anywhere else. Enjoy a ride with Belgian draft horses pulling an elegant carriage, or try your hand at falconry and learn how to interact with a hawk or falcon. You may have been to many wineries before, but the Biltmore Winery is really special with its self-guided tour and many tasting options. The winery is the

most visited in the country and produces about 150,000 cases annually. Blue Ridge Parkway The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most scenic roads in America. With fall foliage peaking in October, the parkway is a wonder to behold. It meanders for a total of 469 miles following the ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains leading to stunning views. The parkway utilizes a milepost system which makes it easier to track where you are on the parkway. Before heading out to the parkway, grab a picnic lunch from the WellBred Bakery & Café, which prides itself on fresh sandwiches, salads and bakery treats. Heading south from Asheville on the parkway, stop at milepost 382 and tour the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center for information, maps and a movie about the area. Here you’ll also find the Folk Art Center for demonstrations and eclectic local folk art. Plan to hike Mount Pisgah while exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway. Mount Pisgah in the distance. The estate once stretched all the way to this peak. The 5,721-foot summit can be accessed from milepost 407.6 on the parkway. The moderate 2.6-mile round-trip trail will take you to an observation platform which affords stunning views of the mountains and, on a clear day, Asheville is visible. Asheville Allow a day to spend time exploring Asheville, a funky mountain city with a rich architectural history. Its many Art Deco, Beaux Arts and Neoclassical buildings are now home to locally owned shops, more than 30 art galleries and an exciting culinary scene. Throw in some live music and you have a special destination which will draw you back again and again. A fun way to tour the city is to experience the Urban Trail, which is essentially the city’s outdoor history museum. The tour is 1.7-miles long and has 30 stations that highlight the city’s historic and cultural stories. At each stop you will find a bronze plaque and a piece of art. Learn about notable characters, many whom you may recognize such as Thomas Wolfe, F. Scott Fitzgerald and O. Henry. Start at the front of Pack Place on Asheville’s Park Square for Plaque #1, “Walk Into History.” Set aside a couple of hours to complete the tour while allowing plenty of time to have lunch and shop. Another unique Asheville activity is to book a foraging tour with No Taste Like Home. This interesting tour will take you out into the forests near Asheville to forage 12 to15 edibles. It also includes a cooking

SandpointLivingLocal.com

demonstration and tasting. Later head to a local restaurant to enjoy an appetizer made from what you foraged. Three days before the tour you will receive an email with your meeting location based on the weather and what foods are available to forage. For a truly spectacular meal, dine at Vue 1913 in the historic Omni Grove Park Inn. This is a AAA Four Diamond Restaurant and consistent winner of the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence. The menu is a haute cuisine take on Southern favorites with plenty of rustic, local ingredients. With beautiful views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this Art-Deco dining room is stunning. It is well worth the splurge. Fall is a peak time to visit the Asheville area, so plan accordingly and book reservations not only for lodging but also for restaurants and activities. If possible, plan to visit on weekdays when you will experience less people. The Explore Asheville website is an excellent tool to plan your visit. There are many posts that highlight local small businesses and the people that make Asheville such a great place to visit. It also has an interactive fall color map and fall leaves schedule to help you plan the perfect time to visit.

Beet and Basil hosts third annual Oktoberfest BY JILLIAN CHANDLER

THIS OCTOBER MARKS BEET AND BASIL’S THIRD ANNUAL COMMUNITY OKTOBERFEST, and all are invited to attend! Held Sunday, October 13 from 11am to 5pm, this free family friendly event is the perfect way to enjoy a fall day. The day’s festivities include oversized outdoor games including Connect Four, Yahtzee, Jenga and more. There will be a craft area for the kids, and live music will be playing during the event for all to enjoy. Owner and chef Jessica Vouk will have a special German Street Food Menu just for the event (think handmade pretzels, pork schnitzel, as well as bratwurst and some surprises as well), and there will be beer of course, as they will be pouring six Oktoberfest and German brews inside and at Beet and Basil’s outside bar. “The last two years have been fantastic,” says Jeremy Holzapfel, Beet and Basil’s general manager. “The first year we raised money for the Bonner County Library expansion. Last year we raised money for Homeless Transition in Sandpoint and the Food Bank.” Jessica has decided that the Sandpoint Community Center would be this year’s beneficiary, as 25 percent of all food and drink sales will be donated to support the organization. “Basically, everyone has fun, and we raise money for our community,” says Jeremy. “This is what Beet and Basil is all about.” Beet and Basil dedicates a lot of time and energy fundraising for local organizations, and as Jeremy says, "This is where we like to spend our money, by giving back to our town. ... Making Sandpoint thrive and taking care of our community is paramount to our mission at Beet and Basil."

HIGHLIGHT EVENT Beet and Basil at The Creek is located at 105 South First Avenue in Sandpoint. For those looking to find out more about Beet and Basil’s 2019 Oktoberfest, you can find up-to-date info on their Facebook page or by calling the restaurant at 208.920.6144. Prost!
