Religion & traditions European colonizers, primarily from Spain, Portugal, France, and later Britain and the Netherlands, brought Christianity to the Caribbean during the Age of Exploration in the 15th century. They sought to convert the indigenous populations to Christianity, often forcibly. Catholicism was the dominant form of Christianity introduced to the Caribbean by the Spanish and French. Many Caribbean countries, such as the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Puerto Rico, have large Catholic populations as a result of colonization. Protestantism, including Anglicanism, Presbyterianism, Methodism, and Baptist denominations, was introduced to the Caribbean by British & Dutch colonizers. These Protestant denominations have significant followings in countries like Jamaica, Barbados, & Trinidad and Tobago. Over time, Christianity in the Caribbean has blended with indigenous and African spiritual beliefs, resulting in unique syncretic religions such as Santería, Vodou, and Obeah. These religions often incorporate elements of Catholicism with traditional African and indigenous practices. The Caribbean is home to many historic churches and cathedrals, both Catholic and Protestant, that showcase the influence of Christianity on the region’s architecture. These buildings often feature a blend of European and local architectural styles.

Divided by Design Picture this: an island where the line between nations is drawn with a blend of turquoise waters and golden sands. St. Maarten, all 37 square miles of it, is shared by 2 European powers – the Netherlands (Sint Maarten) and France (Saint Martin) . How did this double delight come to be? Blame it on the 1648 Treaty of Concordia, which peacefully divided the island into 2 territories, each carrying the charm of its respective colonizer. Dutch Dynamism Let’s kick off our journey on the Dutch side, where the spirit of adventure and trade beckons. Stroll through Philipsburg, the vibrant capital, with its colorful facades and duty-free shopping. The Dutch influence is palpable in the architecture, language, and laid-back attitude of the locals. Do not forget to explore Fort Amsterdam, a historical sentinel that echoes tales of European rivalries and naval prowess. French Finesse Now, let’s saunter over to the French side, where “Bonjour” replaces “Hello,” and a dash of sophistication infuses the air. Marigot, the French capital, invites you to indulge in its chic boutiques, bistros, and a melange of French and Caribbean culinary delights. The blend of Gallic elegance and Caribbean warmth creates a unique ambiance that’s as irresistible as a freshly baked croissant.

CATS Many people in the Caribbean keep cats as pets, but like in many parts of the world, feral cat populations exist in the Caribbean as well. These cats are the descendants of domestic cats that have been abandoned or have strayed from their homes. Feral cats can have a significant impact on local wildlife, particularly birds and small mammals. They are skilled hunters and can decimate populations of native species if not managed properly. Cats are often featured in Caribbean folklore and superstitions. In some cultures, they are seen as bringers of good luck, while in others, they are associated with witchcraft or bad omens. They also often appear in Caribbean art and literature, symbolizing different themes such as mystery, independence, and agility. They are sometimes depicted in paintings, stories, and poems as clever and enigmatic creatures.

LIVE STOCK

Livestock farming is an important part of the agricultural sector in the Caribbean. While the specific types & numbers of livestock vary by island and region, common livestock raised in the Caribbean include: Cattle (raised for meat, milk, and hides), goats (are well-suited to the Caribbean climate and are raised for meat, milk, and sometimes for their hides. Goat farming is particularly common in areas where grazing land is limited), Pigs (raised for pork production & are often kept by smallholder farmers as an important source of income and nutrition) and poultry (raised for meat and eggs. Other poultry, such as ducks and turkeys, are also raised, though to a lesser extent). While livestock farming in the Caribbean faces challenges such as limited grazing land, high feed costs, and susceptibility to natural disasters, it remains an important source of income and food security for many people in the region.

rt & travel are inseparable companions in our journey as fine art photographers. Traveling to distant lands, exploring untouched landscapes, and capturing the essence of diverse cultures shapes our artistry. With each photograph, we don’t just freeze a moment in time, but translate the unseen emotions & unspoken stories that resonate with humanity. As artists, we believe in doing our part to preserve and respect the cultures & environments we photograph and travel to. Using art as a platform, we strive to highlight the beauty of our world, while also advocating for its protection and nurturing. Our cameras are not just tools, but an extension of ourselves in a unique way, a bridge that connects us - and you, the viewer - to the world through the universal language of art. We wanted everyone to experience the world through our lenses. So, we have created a few things to make exactly that happen.

I

nitially, we started our photography project as a way to connect everyone during the 2020 pandemic, when the freedom we used to have has been modified & the new “normal” was unfamiliar and different. We wanted to create something that would bring some smiles, brighten the new (and then gruesome) reality, and unite the people across the globe. Today, it’s evolved into Point D’Vue Fine Art Photography Gallery & Art Store, a place where we collect our favorite moments from our point of view. Each and every piece has a story behind it. Some of our most loved captures are presented in Fine Art as well as Limited Edition collections. All are created with a thought of using the power of art to make you think, feel and/or transport you to a place of your dreams. You can take a look and make any of the art pieces yours here. A Note from

The Editor As we visited Villa Amalia, we fell in love with the beauty of the property, people, who took care of us every step of the way, and the stunning views we woke up to every day. Our trip flew by in a blink of an eye. We didn’t want to leave. We left a part of our hearts at Villa Amalia. We miss Tamisha’s culinary masterpieces. We miss our late night conversations at the dinner table about everything, from life to our latest adventures. We miss hanging out by the pool after a day, filled with (for us) work and adventures. We miss waking up to one of the most breathtaking views I’ve ever seen. A view that is not possible to describe, it must be experienced. Villa Amalia is not a vacation rental. It’s a place that becomes your home, from the first moment

Mike was born in the small northern town of Gillam, MB and moved to Ile Des Chenes with his parents and 2 brothers when he was 8. I was born in the Netherlands and grew up on a small potato farm until we immigrated to Canada in 1980 with my twin sister, older sister, parents and grandparents, to buy a farm and to grow grain. Mike and I married in 1994 and have 3 sons, 22, 20 and 17.

We bought our first Property in St. Maarten in 2009 after spending some time in Florida looking for an investment property and not finding anything we liked. We decided on a whim to fly to the Dutch island of St. Maarten after my mother encouraged us to not give up. We had wanted to see this tiny Dutch Island that is duty free with no taxes. It seemed very intriguing and had always piqued our interest because of my Dutch heritage and Mike liked We now live in La Salle, Manitoba, the ‘no property taxes’ and cheap beer. We soon ventured to the other side of the island and fell in love. We found the perfect villa for us and we spent many weeks living and enjoying the island and when not, we rented it short term. We realized quickly that St. Maarten is a favorite American holiday destination with the ease of flying into the island with multiple daily flights from Miami, New York, Charlotte, Atlanta and others. Over the years, and as we became more comfortable with the island, we kept looking for a piece of land to purchase to build a vacation home for our family. One winter, when at home in Canada, we saw a listing for the perfect Ocean front property in the upscale neighborhood of Guana Bay, where ministers, government officials, & professionals live. We thought it was the perfect spot for us. Mike’s parents were on the island at the time and took a look at the property and agreed with us, and put in an offer to purchase. We found an architect and had plans drawn up. We found a reputable construction company to build our home. Gisela, the lady who owns the company, was also a Concrete Engineer so we were excited that we had the perfect fit to build our vacation dream home. Villa Amalia, from the time we purchased the property to finalizing the construction took 6 years to build with many challenges or as we say, 2 steps forward, 3 steps back and a common question we now ask, which is ‘Monday of which Month’.

We always kept broke and we would have flying debris. I in mind that we would want to share huddled between the tub and bathroom this villa with guests when we were door also with cushions for protection, creating and designing the villa. We hoping the door would not give in and wanted to offer our family and guests a break. I remember taking a peek out brand with a certain level of luxury and the bedroom door when it was quiet, I comfort with spacious rooms while stayshut it so quickly, so terrified of what ing modern/contemporary and visually I had just glimpsed. It was all very appealing for a relaxing atmosphere. Construction in the Caribbean has been one of the most challenging things we have ever done, however it has brought us many wonderful times & memories and has allowed us to spend more time in paradise than we ever anticipated. We use laughter and fun to get us through the hard times and we were forever grateful that our 3 boys were the least of our worries, had it been different, we would not have had the freedom to be away for longer periods of time.

We did a lot of research on the luxury market and had many meetings with Carimo, a local rental agent that specializes in luxury vacations. We discussed what was missing in the market, a missing niche we could improve on, to offer a brand new luxury villa that exceeds expectations. Luxury was new for us to say the least, we have always been very simple people, so it was a learning curve. We want our guests to walk in, drop their bags, enjoy a warm welcome with a glass of champagne and immediately feel their stress and worries leave. To know they are somewhere magical that transpires them to feel rejuvenated and relaxed just by the sheer beauty of the landscape and the villa. Tranquility combined with luxury, to know that you are in a place where everything will be taken care of for you, whether you want to jump on a private catamaran tour, have a relaxing massage, make a gourmet dinner with our private chef Tamisha or have a car dropped off in the driveway for you to explore the island. We have a diverse family with different tastes and needs and we kept everyone in mind, including our guests when we designed the villa. We intentionally designed a Luxury Villa in a Sun destination that gives you the option to enjoy outdoor living with the soft trade winds while never having to be in the direct sun for those with sun sensitivities. Every room offers a covered outdoor space, including the pool deck. We built a salt water pool with 3 different depths so everyone could enjoy it.

Whether you are 2 years old or 75. It offers many, whether you prefer swimming laps, doing water sports, floating, relaxing on one of the long pool benches with your favorite cocktail and novel, or to simply enjoy the magnificent views from the pool. It was also extremely important to us that we could offer something special to a person with a disability, to offer a property where they could enjoy time with his/ her spouse or family, without having to use stairs. For this reason, we created a master suite on the main floor that would allow free movement on the entire main level, from the bedroom to the spa room, indoor/outdoor living areas, the kitchen and pool and deck, all with ease. Villa Amalia is one of the most spectacular villas on the Dutch side that offers unprecedented privacy & our family is very proud of having created this landmark for the island of St. Maarten in the Dutch Caribbean. We continue to promote it to the people of St. Maarten and abroad for our guests. We named the villa after Amalia, the Princess of Orange and the heir apparent to the throne of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. She was born in December 2003 and is 17 years old. My 76 year old mother, Grietje, had

suggested this name to us and we thought it was brilliantly fitting. At Villa Amalia, we host many big groups celebrating a special occasion or seeking a relaxing vacation yet after a year or so we realized to truly experience the villa the way we envisioned, it is best to have guests experience it in a more intimate bed & breakfast setting. This allows us to personalize the guests to experience detail and really focus on the guests so they leave relaxed and rejuvenated. When booking as a Bed & Breakfast our guests will get to enjoy our true VIP treatment, including airport pickup, a complimentary welcome charcuterie board with a bottle of chilled French Champagne waiting in your suite, a stocked beverage fridge, Nespresso machine in each suite and some handmade island soaps for you to take home. Guests can take advantage of their own private concierge service, and enjoy a daily gourmet breakfast in addition to having the option to order and create their own ala carte meal made for you by Chef Tamisha. We are very excited to transition to a luxury bed & breakfast and look forward to hosting many guests in the future.

MEET CHEF

TAMISHA Where The Borders Between Food, Passion, & Magic Fade Away I was born on the beautiful island of Sint Maarten, 37 years of age. I am a Private Chef at Villa Amalia and a mother of a son. I was raised in Sint Maarten by my mom, who was from French St.Martin and my dad is from St.Lucia, but truly I grew up with my grandmother from the Dominican Republic. She cooked and baked constantly and I was always in the kitchen earning something new with her from her coconut tarts, sweet potato puddings to her pumpkin bread, baked butter breads and so much more, it never ended. Although I was in the kitchen, I never thought I would have been a Chef today. I left Sint Maarten to study Marketing and Communications in Holland and found it boring and whilst talking with the professor he asked what I liked to do in my spare time, I responded “cooking of course”. He told me to try culinary school, and that we need to follow what we love. I discussed it with my mom and she agreed and allowed me to switch courses and like that I fell into my greatest passion.

Mastering the Art of Directing Models: A Photographer’s Guide

In the realm of photography, capturing the essence of a moment requires more than just technical prowess with a camera; it demands the art of directing models. Directing models is not merely orchestrating poses but delving into the subtleties that breathe life into an image. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the intricacies of mastering the art of directing models for a photo shoot.

Understanding Your Vision Before stepping onto the set, a photographer must have a clear vision of the story they want to tell through their images. A well-defined concept will serve as a roadmap for directing models effectively. Whether it’s conveying emotion, telling a narrative, or highlighting specific aesthetics, clarity in vision lays the foundation for a successful photoshoot. Photography is about telling a story, evoking emotions, and creating art.

Define Your Concept Before the shoot, take the time to define a clear concept or theme for your images. Consider the emotions, narrative, or aesthetics you want to convey. Example: If your vision is to capture the essence of a carefree summer day, your concept may revolve around vibrant colors, outdoor settings, and joyful expressions. Stor yboarding & Shot Lists Create a storyboard or shot list that outlines the key moments or poses you envision. Break down your concept into specific scenes or poses that contribute to the overall narrative. Example: For a fashion shoot, your shot list may include close-ups of accessories, full-body shots showcasing the outfit, and dynamic poses to highlight movement. Communicate Clearly Effectively communicate your vision to the models before & during the shoot. Use descriptive language to convey the mood, expression, or character you’re aiming for. Example: Instead of saying “smile,” you might instruct, “Radiate a carefree and joyful smile as if you’re enjoying a sunny day at the beach.” Visual References Provide visual references, such as mood boards or images that align with your vision. Showcasing examples helps models understand the desired style, composition, and overall look. Example: Share images with a similar color palette, lighting, or posing style to illustrate your vision for the shoot. Encourage Collaboration Foster a collaborative environment where models feel comfortable sharing ideas. Be open to incorporating model input that aligns with the overall vision. Example: If a model suggests a pose that complements the concept, encourage them to bring their creativity into the process.

LivingNotes

Origins & Destinations - Greece 485

Adaptability Be adaptable and open to adjustments based on the dynamics of the shoot. Assess how environmental factors, lighting, or unexpected moments can enhance or alter the original vision. Example: Embrace a sudden burst of rain during an outdoor shoot, using it to create a unique atmosphere that aligns with your storytelling. Feedback & Positive Reinforcement Provide constructive feedback & positive reinforcement throughout the shoot. Acknowledge when a model successfully embodies the envisioned mood or expression. Example: “Great job capturing that candid laughter! It perfectly resonates with the joyful spirit we’re aiming for.” Review & Adjust Periodically review the images captured during the shoot to ensure alignment with your vision. Adjust your approach if certain elements need refinement or if new ideas emerge during the process. Example: If reviewing images reveals a need for more close-up shots to emphasize emotions, plan the subsequent poses accordingly. Conveying your vision effectively is a collaborative effort that involves thoughtful planning, clear communication, & adaptability. Remember, the synergy between your conceptual clarity and the model’s execution is the key to a successful and visually compelling photoshoot.

486

LivingNotes

Communication is Key Effective communication is the backbone of directing models. Establishing a rapport with your models creates an environment of trust and collaboration. Clearly articulate your vision, provide constructive feedback, and be open to the model’s input. A two-way dialogue fosters creativity and ensures that the final images align with the collective vision.

Example: Begin the shoot with a casual conversation, asking about the model’s interests and experiences. Trust & Collaboration Foster an environment of trust and collaboration between you and the models. Communicate that you value their input and ideas, creating a partnership in the creative process. Example: Express appreciation for the model’s unique perspective and encourage them to share thoughts on poses or expressions. Articulating Your Vision Clearly articulate your vision for the shoot, providing a roadmap for both you and the models. Use descriptive language to convey the desired mood, emotions, or narrative. Example: Instead of saying “pose elegantly,” specify “channel a sense of timeless elegance, as if you’re part of a classic movie scene.” Constructive Feedback Offer constructive feedback that guides the model towards embodying the envisioned concept. Use positive reinforcement to acknowledge successful elements and provide gentle guidance for improvement. Example: “The intensity in your eyes is fantastic! Let’s try to soften the smile a bit to maintain that mysterious allure.”

LivingNotes

Active Listening Practice active listening to understand the model’s perspective & preferences. Be receptive to their feedback and adjust your approach accordingly. Example: If a model expresses discomfort with a certain pose, actively listen, and collaboratively find an alternative that aligns with the vision. Encouraging Dialogue Encourage a two-way dialogue by asking for the model’s thoughts on poses or expressions. Discuss potential adjustments together to ensure mutual understanding. Example: “What emotions do you associate with this scene, and how can we amplify them through your body language?” Flexibility & Adaptability Remain flexible and adaptable during the shoot, considering unexpected factors that may influence the direction. Communicate changes clearly & maintain an open-minded approach. Once upon a time, in a small coastal town far from the hustle and bustle of the everyday world, lived two best friends named Mona and Sam. These two curious souls were known for their insatiable appetite for adventure. One sunny afternoon, while exploring the attic of Mona’s grandmother’s house, they stumbled upon an old chest filled with mysterious artifacts and an intriguing treasure map. As Mona delicately unfolded the yellowed treasure map, her eyes widened with excitement. “Sam, look at this! It’s like a relic from the age of pirates or explorers. And check out these markings – it’s like a riddle, guiding us somewhere magical!” Sam, her ever-enthusiastic partner-in-crime, grinned from ear to ear. “Aye, Captain Mona! Adventure awaits! Let’s see where this mysterious map leads us.” As the clock struck midnight, the room transformed into a magical chamber. The twinkling stars outside seemed to align with the faded markings on the map, emitting a soft, enchanting glow. In a blink, Mona and Sam found themselves transported to the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The air was alive with the rhythm of salsa music, and the duo stood surrounded by buildings painted in hues of turquoise, coral, and sunshine. “This is incredible! Did we just step into a postcard?” Sam marveled. Mona, map in hand, pointed toward a path illuminated by the soft glow. “Look, Sam! It’s leading us somewhere special. Let’s follow.” Their journey led them to a playful breeze that seemed to carry the laughter of centuries. Suddenly, a voice echoed, “Greetings, young adventurers! I am Carlos, the guardian of this enchanted fort.” Both startled and intrigued, Mona and Sam followed Carlos to a centuries-old fortress perched on a hill overlooking the glistening sea. The fort, with its weathered stones and ancient tales, exuded an air of mystery and magic. Carlos, a mischievous ghost of a Spanish conquistador, regaled them with stories of hidden passages, buried treasures, and the echoes of laughter that lingered through time. “Tonight, you dance with history,” he declared, leading them into a courtyard adorned with twinkling lights.

The first chapter of their Caribbean calling had unfolded, leaving the promise of more enchanted nights to come.
