Origins & Destinations - Greece 3 A trip to Rome was not on the plan. Or, rather, it was, just not in December. As they say in Italy, sfidare la sorte has thrown a few curves in my life, and in search of healing for my little Elia, we boarded a plane to Rome on December 2nd.

Italy greeted us with war mth, love, care, compassion, and, most importantly, hope. As I walked through the streets of Rome in little time free from hospital visits, I understood why. T he qualities that are so essential in life but are being dismissed more and more in wester n world, are the core of Italian culture. T heir love for life is real. T heir appreciation for beauty is in every step. You can’t help but see things in a different, better, light. Hope is engraved in every cor nerstone of every building. You see it. You feel it, too. T his issue is coming out right at the start of the new year. I want you to make a wish. T hen, imagine yourself by the Trevi Fountain. Toss a coin with your eyes closed. Italians say, it comes true. Roman art was diverse and influential. Romans were skilled in creating mosaics by using tiny colored tiles or stones called tesserae. Colesseum The

This famous amphitheater was built around 70-80 AD and could hold 50,000 to 80,000 spectators. They used concrete, limestone, and travertine (a type of stone) to construct the Colosseum. Its opening ceremony lasted for 100 days! During this time, there were grand celebrations & many events, including gladiator fights. Gladiators, who were the famous Roman fighters, battled each other or wild animals for the entertainment of the crowds. Beneath the arena, there was a network of tunnels and rooms to house animals, gladiators, and equipment and had lifts to bring them up to the surface.
