am sitting outside in a cafe in Paris as I am writing this note. T here is a cup of espresso on my tiny one-person table. I am wearing blue jeans and a black leather jacket. I blend into the Parisian crown seamlessly. Just as I want to. Paris is one of those cities in the world that everyone must experience at least once in their life. Everyone knows Paris as the most romantic city in the world. T he City of Lights. T he capital of fashion. All of those are true, yes. But Paris is so much more than all-too-wellknown cliches. Built as the entrance arch for the 1889 World’s Fair in Paris, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution, Eiffel Tower is 1,063 ft (1,665 steps to the top), making it the tallest structure in Paris. At the time of completion, it was the tallest manmade structure in the world. That record was broken by the Chrysler Building in 1930. It has 1,665 steps to the top and is made of 18,000 individual iron pieces, connected by over 2.5 million rivets. It weighs approximately about 22.4 million pounds, which is relatively light for its size. Every 7 years, a crew of 25 painters use 60 tons of paint to repaint the tower and keep it from rusting. Currently and at the cost of 60 million Euros, the tower is being painted gold for the 2026 Olympics.

October 11 th T he scenery outside of the train window caught my eye. T he architecture is different. And so is the landscape. Brain makes a quick connection: France. We must be in France now. My lips smile to the sound of Bobby’s camera shutter. He is in his element. Beautiful green fields become a blur as my mind drifts off to sleep. It’s going to be a few more hours before we arrive in Paris.

Paris is one of those places that you either fall in love with or don’t like at all. It was an instant connection for me. Bobby’s non-stop firing camera confirms that he’s falling hard for it too. A corner of my eye notes a very stylish cab driver. What is it about French & style? Must be their DNA.

A cozy, dimly lit place, where the aroma of melting cheese filled every corner of the space greeted us. Old wooden tables and walls adorned with black and white photographs of old Paris set the ambiance.

A local couple at the next table struck up a conversation, sharing stories of Montmartre.

The morning was crisp with a hint of chill, characteristic of Parisian mornings. As we neared our rendezvous point in Le Marais, a young woman fitting our guide’s description waved energetically. The leather jacket, wide-legged jeans, and those quintessential Parisian black boots gave her an aura of effortless chic. Her bobbed hair danced with every gust of wind. “Bonjour!” Mathilda greeted with a wide smile, her energy infectious. “Ready to discover Le Marais’s culinary secrets?” With a mischievous grin, she launched into our first lesson. “Did you know Le Marais is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Paris? With its narrow streets & historic buildings, it hides centuries-old secrets and... some of the most amazing food spots!” She came to a halt by the ancient-looking boulangerie, its wooden signboard slightly tilted. “This is the oldest bakery in Le Marais,” Mathilda began, her eyes lighting up.“They’ve been kneading dough since the 1600s!” Matilda pulled a white paper bag filled with pastries out of her linen tote. “Did you know the croissant was inspired by the crescent moon symbol of the Ottoman Empire? A nod to the victory over them.”

“The art of French pastries,” Mathilda’s voice was both captivating & soothing at the same time, “dates back to the medieval times. And this bakery has been preserving that art for over two centuries!” She held up a baguette, explaining its crusty exterior and airy interior. But it was the flaky croissants, with their rich buttery layers, that stole the show. Walking on, Mathilda pointed out various architectural wonders, weaving history & food seamlessly. 5 or so minutes later we made our way to an open market.

The morning dawned bright and beautiful. With the culinary journey still fresh in our memories, today’s agenda was a shift to art, history, and the bohemian charm of Montmartre. Perched on a hill, this neighborhood boasts artistic roots, a deep history, & panoramic views of Paris. It’s been said that the spirits of Picasso, Van Gogh, and many other artists still linger here, inspiring visitors with the neighborhood’s ethereal charm. Montmartre immediately greets you by the district’s village-like atmosphere. Narrow cobbled streets, ivy-clad buildings, and quaint cafés where writers scribbled away — Montmartre is a postcard come to life. The first touch of cobbled streets beneath my feet feel like a soft embrace from an old friend. “I’m walking inside a masterpiece.” - Bobby’s half whisper resonated with all my being. Every step feels heavy with history, as if you are tracing the paths of legends like Picasso and Van Gogh. Bobby’s camera is in overdrive mode. “Every corner here begs to be photographed,” he mumbled. A thought flashed through my mind and my lips smiled in response: I couldn’t agree more.

A set of winding stairs caught my eye. The magical Sacré-Cœur Basilica. A sign “tickets” pointed to a tiny blue door around the corner. 30 or so minutes later my hand was clutching two entry passes. “Ready for a climb?” - my enthusiastic words weren’t met with the equal response. A heavy sigh from behind was a definite confirmation that Bobby’s not a fan of the idea . Sure, the 300 steps to the top might be a challenge, but the view from there would be well worth it. My mind quickly justified the decision and shoved away the nagging feeling of guilt. My mind concentrated on getting to the top as soon as possible for Bobby’s sake.The decision to ascend the Sacré-Cœur’s narrow steps wasn’t an easy one for him. The feeling of heaviness of closed spaces and the weight of their darkness tightening around his chest radiated from every cell of his body.. Claustrophobia isn’t just a word —it’s a real, palpable monster that threatens to swallow you whole.

Montmartre transformed as the evening approached. Sitting outdoors in a small local-favorite cafe, my brain was trying to translate the French menu.The cool breeze felt refreshing & somehow comforting too. T h e E i f f e l Towe r Imagine a giant tower made of steel that reaches high into the sky! That’s the Eiffel Tower. Built in 1889 by Gustave Eiffel, it is almost 1100 ft (330m) to the top. Montmartre

Montmartre is a hill & famous neighborhood in the northern part of Paris, and the highest point in the city. You can climb to the top and have an amazing view of the city! The moment the note mentioned “a place where colors soar,” Léa’s eyes lit up. “Montmartre!” she exclaimed, her heart racing at the thought of the artists’ haven. They arrived at Montmartre just as the morning sun began to cast its golden glow on the district’s cobblestone streets. They reached the bustling Place du Tertre, filled with artists fervently sketching portraits, painting landscapes, and creating masterpieces on canvases. Amidst the sea of colors, a mime, dressed in black and white, stood out. He was performing near a beautiful old fountain, captivating the audience with his silent storytelling. Spotting Léa and Henri, he suddenly paused, walked over, and handed them a rolled-up canvas without saying a word. Unrolling the canvas, they found an abstract painting of a familiar landmark. “This looks like the Louvre!” Henri exclaimed, recognizing the outline of I.M. Pei’s iconic pyramid. “But it’s all... jumbled?” Léa observed. The colors of the Louvre seemed out of place, with patches of the sky where the pyramid should be and vice versa. Sneaking through an old side entrance known only to a few, Léa and Henri found themselves engulfed in the overwhelming vastness of the empty museum. “Can you believe we’re actually inside the Louvre... at night?” Léa whispered, her voice echoing faintly in the dimly lit halls. Her eyes sparkled with mischief.

“It feels like we’ve traveled back in time,” Henri replied, his footsteps muffled on the marble floor. They tiptoed past statues, ancient relics, and countless masterpieces, their torchlights dancing on the walls.

Remembering a tale her grandmother once told her about a hidden chamber within the Louvre, Léa excitedly shared, “There’s said to be a room where royal secrets are kept. Maybe this key opens it.” With their hearts pounding, they began their search, moving through the maze of art. Every so often, they would find symbols on the floor, discreetly pointing in a direction. Following the symbols, they arrived at a massive bookshelf. Using the key, Léa unlocked a discreetly placed lock, causing the bookshelf to creak open, revealing a passageway. The hidden chamber was grand, illuminated by soft candlelight. At the center stood a pedestal, and on it sat a golden crown encrusted with precious gems that glittered magnificently. Henri approached cautiously, lifting a parchment placed beneath it. “To find what you seek, go where music and dance meet. Your next clue lies in the heart of the street,” he read out. “Opera Garnier!” Léa exclaimed. “It must be!” They carefully replaced everything as they found it and, with the new clue in hand, hurried out of the Louvre. Their next adventure awaited at the heart of Paris’s grandest opera house.

Approaching a golden sarcophagus, she noticed an out-of-place, tiny hieroglyph, a symbol resembling the Parisian streets. She traced her fingers around it, revealing a hidden compartment. Inside was a delicately rolled parchment with an intricately drawn map of Paris. “Look here,” she said, pointing at an X marked in the fashionable district of Le Marais. The note read, “A district old, yet ever so spry, where cobblestone streets and boutiques lie. Seek the oldest square and you’ll find another clue in the archway, not behind.” Henri smiled, “Le Marais! And Place des Vosges must be the square. Let’s go!” The duo, energized by their discovery, quickly set off for the historic heart of Le Marais, ready for the next chapter of their adventure.

Plus, I’ve been waiting for the right pair to show up.” Henri leaned closer, intrigued, “Have others come before us?” The patisserie owner nodded, “A few tried, but they lacked the tenacity you both seem to possess.” Léa picked up a raspberry macaron, inspecting the letter ‘C’ on it. “So, we need to arrange these to spell something?”

Henri’s forehead furrowed in concentration. “Look! If we place the ‘T’ éclair here, and the ‘O’ tart there, it spells ‘TO CATACOMBS.’” A soft gasp escaped Léa’s lips, “The Catacombs of Paris! That’s where we’re headed next.” Madame Duval smiled approvingly, “Very well done. But a word of caution, the Catacombs are vast and can be disorienting. Always stick together.” Handing them a freshly baked croissant for the road, she added, “And remember, sometimes the path forward requires looking back.” With those cryptic words ringing in their ears, Léa and Henri left the patisserie, their hearts racing with anticipation for the next leg of their Parisian puzzle pursuit. The allure of the underground city of bones awaited them, and they knew their adventure was only just beginning.

Henri, taking a deep breath to steady his nerves, commented, “Who would’ve thought Paris has this... vast underworld?” Léa shivered, “And to think we’re walking amidst centuries of history. But let’s focus. We need to find that cat.”

The cat, a sleek black feline with bright green eyes, sat gracefully atop a pedestal, gazing intently at the duo. The Eiffel Tower pendant around its neck shimmered in the faint torchlight. As they approached, the cat gracefully leapt down and strolled ahead, occasionally pausing and looking back, as if urging them to follow. Léa whispered, “Do you think it’s leading us somewhere?” Henri nodded, “It’s like it knows where we’re supposed to go.” After winding through several tunnels and chambers, the cat led them to a small alcove. On the ground was an intricate mosaic depicting Paris from a bird’s-eye view, with various landmarks illuminated in gold. The cat sat on one such golden spot - the Notre Dame Cathedral. Léa quickly understood, “It’s a map! And it’s guiding us to our next location.” Henri bent down to get a closer look, his fingers tracing the River Seine as it meandered through the city. “Look, the mosaic is also hinting at specific paths we should take above ground. There’s a particular route it wants us to follow!”

As Léa held the pendant, it began to warm in her hand, glowing with a soft light. She and Henri stared at it, captivated. Suddenly, the pendant projected a small holographic map of Paris, with a clear path drawn from the catacombs leading not to Notre Dame, but to the Eiffel Tower instead. The streets weren’t just forming the word ‘MONTMARTRE’ but seemed to be directing them to a specific location within the district. Suddenly, the elevator jolted and came to a halt. They were just a level below the top. The doors slowly creaked open to reveal an old woman dressed in vintage Parisian attire, complete with a feathered hat and lacy parasol.

“Ah, young adventurers,” she greeted, her voice deep and melodious. “You’ve managed to uncover the city’s paths. I am Madame Leclair, guardian of Paris’s mysteries.” Léa, always the brave one, stepped forward. “Madame Leclair, we’re on a quest. Can you help us?” Madame Leclair chuckled, “You’ve come to the right place. But first, a test.” She handed them a small golden compass. “This compass does not point north but towards the heart of Montmartre. But be wary; it will lead you through only if your intentions are pure.” Henri held the compass delicately, noticing it began to point in a specific direction. “Looks like our next stop is Montmartre, but somewhere more specific than before,” he whispered. As the elevator resumed its journey to the top, Léa and Henri felt a renewed sense of purpose. The Parisian Puzzle Pursuit was more than just a game; it was a journey through the heart and soul of Paris. As they departed from the Eiffel Tower, the glinting streets of Montmartre beckoned them, and the compass in Henri’s hand was their guide. The adventure was far from over.
