LETTER from E D I T O R

Origins & Destinations - Greece 3

W

e planned our maiden voyage to Greece for the summer of 2021. The allure of the Mediterranean had been calling, and finally, the stars aligned. Our plane touched down in Athens’ bustling airport, bigger than I had expected but filled with the warmth of the Mediterranean. It was as if I had returned to a place I’ve been to a long time ago. We had only 10 days, and our itinerary was simple: the heart of Athens with its mingling tourists to the hidden wonders of Plaka, and the playful embrace of Mykonos. Each leg of our journey uncovered something unique, a symphony of experiences that spoke to the soul. In Athens, we found ourselves swept away by the crowds. The city is alive with travelers from all corners of the globe. It is chaotic at times, yet, beneath the surface of well-trodden paths, it keeps its hidden gems. The small villages and charming streets of Plaka stole our hearts, offering a glimpse into a Greece untouched by time. In these hidden corners, we encountered the kindest of people. Faces etched with stories, eyes filled with wisdom, hearts overflowing with warmth. These connections were unexpected yet profound. More than memories, they were imprints on our hearts. And then there was Mykonos. A place of endless fun and carefree laughter. From dancing on sun-kissed beaches, toasting to friendships new and old, and getting lost in the rhythm of island life. Mykonos is a celebration, a place where joy is not just felt but lived. In Mykonos, we met people from all walks of life, each one drawn to the island’s magnetic pull of pleasure and freedom. Mykonos nights are long, filled with music and smiles, and its days are a cascade of adventures & discovery. The island is alive with a vibrancy that could not be ignored, and we, too, became a part of its pulsating heartbeat. Greece is more than a destination; it is an experience, a living tapestry woven with joy, kindness, and discovery. Through our words, photos, and memories, we extend an invitation to you. May you, too, discover the Greece that we found, the Greece that sings, dances, and embraces. Greece is our melody of life. May it become a part of your song, too.

AT H E N S From Myth to Majesty

The Mythical Origins: Birth of the City In the heart of ancient Greece, Athens emerged from the mythical contest between Athena, the goddess of wisdom, and Poseidon, the god of the sea. Legend has it that Athena’s gift of an olive tree symbolized peace and prosperity, leading her to be proclaimed the city’s patron goddess. Hence, Athens became a beacon of knowledge and innovation. The Acropolis: A Sacred Citadel Perched atop a rocky hill, the Acropolis stood as the religious and cultural heart of Athens. Its grand temples, including the iconic Parthenon, celebrated the city’s golden age during the 5th century BCE. The architectural marvels and sculptures pay tribute to the gods and reflect the brilliance of ancient Greek civilization. The Oracle of Delphi: The Voice of the Gods While not in Athens itself, the Oracle of Delphi played a crucial role in the city’s history. Pilgrims sought guidance from the oracle, a priestess channeling the wisdom of Apollo, the god of prophecy. The cryptic messages provided advice on everything, from wars to personal decisions, shaping the course of Athenian destiny. The Periklean Era: The Golden Age Under the leadership of Pericles, Athens experienced its Golden Age, a period of cultural flourishing and intellectual enlightenment. The arts, philosophy, and architecture thrived, with philosophers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle laying the foundation for Western thought. This legacy continues to inspire humanity to this day. The Olympics: The Celebrations of Unity Athens hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, rekindling the spirit of the ancient Greek athletic contests. The Games symbolize unity and peace among nations, harking back to the truce enacted during ancient times to allow safe travel to Olympia. The Olympic flame continues to ignite hearts worldwide, connecting us to our shared humanity.

Athens

Athens is the oldest capital city in Europe and has been inhabited since the late Neolithic era, with evidence of early settlements dating from 4500 to 4000 BC. It is the birthplace of Democracy in 500 B.C. (from the Greek words “demos” – the people, and “Kratos” – the power). However, it’s one of the only cities to have experienced all types of government: monarchy, democracy, socialism, capitalism, and communism. The city has only over 3 million in population, but hosts over 18 million visitors every year. Parthenon

T he exact location of the Parthenon, the temple

dedicated to Athena, ancient Greek goddess associated with wisdom, warfare, and handicraft, was carefully plotted to align with the beliefs of Greek mythology. The temple actually aligns with a cluster of stars known as the Hyades, which were well-known in the ancient belief system. In addition to being a temple, the Parthenon was also an art gallery and a treasury, owing to the fact that it housed an enormous statue of Athena that was crafted using melted gold, so like many other buildings from the ancient world, the Parthenon was probably colorful in its heyday. It was majorly damaged in 1687 when the Venetians fired on the structure with gunpowder. A large portion of the building was destroyed in the battle, which left the Parthenon burning.

Caryatids

112

C aryatid is a sculpted female figure

serving as architectural support in the place of a column or a pillar (the corresponding male architectural figure is called Atlas or Telamon). Its purpose in architecture is mainly decorative. The most famous Caryatids are the six of Erechtheion in Acropolis, Athens. The statues are simply called “Korai” (meaning “daughters” in Greek). The Erechtheion’s daughters proudly support the roof, gazing at the Parthenon with an ethereal look. All six of them look very similar, but upon closer inspection, each one is unique. Their juicy bodies seem to breathe under the folds of the veil, the shoulders are bare, their hair long and tied in a different manner for each elaborate hairstyle. Their legs are bent, they wear a simple Doric veil that forms folds between breasts and rolls effortlessly to the feet. They were painted on the surface, each one a different color which faded on the course of time.

Dionysus

T heater of Dionysus, originally laid in the 6th century

BCE built into a natural hollow at the southern slopes of the Acropolis, is considered to be the world’s oldest theater. It was originally developed as a site for religious practices and festivals dedicated to Dionysus, the god of wine & plays. It was home to the annual spring drama festival where the ancient playwrights, among them Sophocles, Euripides, Aeschylus, and Aristophanes, presented their works in competition. The theater would eventually become the birthplace of the Greek tragedy. The seating around the theater was originally composed of wood. It accommodated 17,000 spectators. Front row seats were elaborate thrones with carved legs & armrests; the name of the spectator for which they were reserved was inscribed on each seat.

The

Capitals

A capital is the crowning, decorative part

of a column that transitions from main structure to the supporting masonry. They can help to date buildings and understand architecture. Corinthian is the most ornate of the three Greek column styles and easily recognized as it is elaborately decorated, often featuring flowers, leaves and scrolls. Doric, with a plain capital and a fluted shaft, is the most simple and earliest of the Classical column styles. Last but not least, Ionic column (as seen here in this picture) is simply characterized by the scroll-like ornaments that appear on the capital known as volutes and a base support that is not featured on Doric columns. Greek Ionic columns were representative of the female figures all the way from the capitals’ volutes (a woman’s hair) to the flutes on the column shaft, which signified the folds of a woman’s dress Although they were first developed in ancient Greece but also used extensively in Rome.

Hollowed out of the southern face of the Acropolis hill, it’s one of the world’s oldest and finest open-air theater. It was used as a venue for music concerts with a capacity of 5,000. The theater remained intact until it was destroyed by the invasion of the Heruli – early Germanic people – in 267 AD, which left it in ruins. It slowly became more ruined for a long time – particularly during the Ottoman occupation. It only really began to be used as it was rebuilt during the German occupation of 1941-1944, to host performances by the Athens State Orchestra & the Greek National Opera.

Greek

Statues F or the ancient Greeks, ornate

and imposing statues signified the presence of the gods and symbolized power and ideal beauty. In ancient Greece, it was very important to create a human form of the the gods and goddesses so that they could be worshiped in the cities, temples & during festivals. The statues were depictions of an ideal beauty, piety, honor or sacrifice. These were always depictions of young men, ranging in age from adolescence to early maturity, even when placed on the graves of elderly citizens. The sculpture in the ancient Greece is almost a synonym for Greek culture itself. Sculpture did indeed play an important role in Greek life, and the many ways in which the Greeks use sculptures (architectural, funereal, commemorative, public and private, secular and sacred) is illustrative of this vital role.

Crocodiles

D espite having a barren landscape, Mykonos has a

richer fauna than one might assume. The large, spiky lizards that sit on the rocks and the dry stone fences are the signature animal of Mykonos. The locals call these lizards “crocodiles”. Interestingly, what we refer to as crocodile today actually gets its name from the lizards of Mykonos! When the Ionians arrived in Egypt and saw the swimming creatures in the Nile (known as champsai at the time), they named them “crocodiles” given the fact that they looked like the lizards in Mykonos.

M ykonos has a very strict

color code that requires doors and windows to be painted blue, green or red. This dates back to an old tradition where sailors used to paint their doors blue, farmers painted them green and everyone else used red. Blue and white are the most important colors in the Greek culture, hence being the colors of their flag. Blue reflects the color of the seas and skies in their everyday life. Widespread use of blue also emanates from an ancient belief that the sky blue shade of turquoise has the power to keep evil away. And white symbolizes the clouds and the waves.

August 2 nd The ferry arrives at the shore. I’m not sure what time it is - my sleep-deprived brain can’t do the math. Mykonos. Finally. From the small oval ferry window, the island seems to be sprouting from the Aegean like a white flower, blooming under the sun. I feel like a kid on Christmas morning. Can’t wait to unwrap my present. A warm breeze engulfs me as I step out of the ferry. The smell is unique, sea-salt air mixed with fragrances of wildflowers. I feel the drowsiness slowly peeling away, replaced by pure exhilaration. “Is it possible to fall in love with air?!” - a wild thought springs into my head. I’m breathing in the essence of Mykonos. This is going to be something. I feel it in my bones. The taxi ride is a rollercoaster. Hairpin bends. Narrow lanes. I’ve heard the Greek islands have narrow streets, but this? This is on another level. Buildings seem to pop out of nowhere, jutting out at angles I didn’t think possible. And then there is the sea… Oh, the sea! Worth all the jet lag and hustle of overcrowded airports. It teases, appearing and disappearing with each twist and turn. It’s a dance. A beautifully choreographed, adrenaline-fueled dance between the car, the lanes, and the sea. I’m not just on a taxi ride, I’m on an adventure, and it’s barely started. My mind paints pictures of sunrise morning walks and moonlight swims in the clear warm Aegean sea. The car slows down as the driver pulls up at a villa nestled on the hills. It’s definitely a Greek sanctuary. My eyes scan the area as my brain calculates the distance - a mile or so to the water. And UP the hill. Sunrise walks and sunset swims will be a little problematic. Thoughts keep rushing through my head. Did I make a mistake? I looked at a million properties, did I book the wrong one?

... Fingers find the reservation in the Booking app. No. Everything is right. This is the place. Except… it’s not on or even by the beach. A very friendly receptionist replies with a smile to my very fair question “where is the beach? Oh! It’s just right there below! You can drive to it. You can rent a car here too. But we have a beautiful beach view!” My vision of an ethereal adventure crushes with every word I hear. Well, lesson learned the hard way, I guess. My body is so tired, all I want is just to climb in bed. Receptionist hands over the keys and the happiest older man that has ever walked Mykonos grounds takes us another 1/2 a mile up the hill to our little oasis. There’s a surreal feeling as I step inside. It’s the quintessential Greek house. Modern, but still authentic. Cobalt domes, white walls. It’s something out of a movie. And the view! An unending expanse of blue speckled with white. Boats. Ferries. Yachts. The sight has me entranced. A sense of peace washes over me. It’s not just a view, it’s an emotion. It’s like staring at a painting, but knowing that it’s real, it’s alive, it’s dynamic. I’m home. Different home, but home nevertheless. The sun dips. Lights flicker in the distance. Dinner at a worn-out tavern. Rustic. Charming. There’s a power cut, “a typical island affair”, my ears catch two servers talking. Somehow, it feels… good. Peaceful. It adds to the atmosphere. Flickering candles. Warm bread. Souvlaki. Tzatziki. Greek salad. The tastes explode in my mouth. Each bite, a revelation. It’s not just food, it’s a taste of culture, of life. I am so tired my eyelids feel 100 lbs each. My mind is racing though, reliving the day that has almost passed. The curiosity peeks it’s sleepy head out : Mykonos, what do you have in store for me?

August 3 rd A decision to blend in is overridden by logic: we need a car, not a moped. Scorching August sun and heavy equipment require 4 wheels. A new receptionist hands over the keys to the tiniest car my eyes have ever come in contact with. An unnerving question “will it hold up?!” pops up for a second and gives way to the overpowering urge of excitement to discover the legendary Mykonos. 2 minutes later a little 4 door bug is on the road. I am a part of this vibrant island life, not just a spectator anymore. Mykonos town is the first stop. The island comes into view as the car turns the corner. My heart skips a beat. There is an internal, impossible to explain shift: as if I’ve journeyed back in time. The ancient ruins tell a tale of a time when gods and goddesses walked the earth. It’s humbling and inspiring. I’m treading the same paths that ancient people once did, breathing the same air, sharing the same sunlight. The connection is profound. It takes less than 4 min to get lost in the white maze of Mykonos town. The streets, narrow and winding, are buzzing. The alleyways of Mykonos town are alive. Thriving. Whitewashed streets. Shops. Locals. Tourists. Cats. It’s pandemonium. But in the chaos, there’s rhythm. There’s harmony. It’s not just a town, it’s a living, breathing organism. It’s not just the physical space, it’s the air that fills it, the sounds that echo off the walls, the warmth that radiates from the people. Sunset at Little Venice. I saw this restaurant a long time ago, 8 years ago? 10? I think NatGeo did a feature on them. Happiness, the lost genuine and pure, fills my heart. I dreamed of coming here so, so many times.

My eyes keep landing on Mykonos windmills. They glow golden. The sky… a riot of colors. No wonder Greece is famous for its dusks. It’s not just a sunset, it’s a painting. I’m not watching it, I’m feeling it. I’m a part of the spectacle. The colors. The emotions. The awe. It’s like the sun’s final act for the day, a grand performance to mark the end. Yet, somehow the night doesn’t signal an end. It signals a beginning. The thump of music. The laughter. The dance. It all sweeps you up in the whirl. A party and not a party at the same time. More like a celebration. Of life. Just that. Simple but so profoundly happy. The smile quietly makes its way to my lips. I like the Mykonian spirit - wild, free, unchained. Mykonos, you are fun!

The sun paints the sky in hues of gold, lavender and pink. Can colors be intoxicating? Can they stir your soul? Right now, at this moment, it feels like they can. It’s the last day in Mykonos. The week flew by! A twinge of sadness? Maybe. But mostly, anticipation. You know, when you have the whole day ahead and you know it’s going to be different. That kind of anticipation. It tingles, it hums, it pulses through. The day starts. First things first: seaside breakfast. Greek yogurt. Honey. Coffee. But it’s more than a meal, it’s an experience. Each morsel, each sip, a piece of Mykonos. It’s not just the taste, it’s the texture, the aroma, the view, the air. It’s all those things combined into a single, sublime moment. My mind makes notes of everything. I will definitely miss this. A lot. Time to get on the road. Destination? A hidden gem, a local secret. Supposed to be good. Google maps makes it a scenic journey: Olive trees. Quaint houses. Stray cats basking in the sun. The scent of thyme and lavender wafting in the air. Myonos is very different from any other island I’ve ever been to.

The path winds down, leading to a tiny, rustic tavern. It’s humble, unpretentious, but radiating warmth. No electricity. Just firewood, flames and a passion for food that transcends the usual. I can hear the crackle of the fire, smell the earthy aroma of the wood, feel the radiant heat from the oven. There is a line outside. My eyes glance at the time : 11:30AM, 30 minutes before the tavern opens. The receptionist was right - this place must be very good. “It will probably be a 40 minute wait or so”, - the young waiter’s accent adds even more charm to this place. “I’ll go explore for a minute, can you watch cameras?” - Bobby’s hands gently cover two huge cameras with a t-shirt to protect from the blazing sun. A second later his head disappears in the shrubs… …“Olz, there is a little beach! Just go down!” - Bobby’s words are music to my ears. 11:45 am sun in Mykonos is scorching. 50 or so stone stairs take me down to the beach. Unnamed. Undiscovered. A secret haven. The sand is warm. The water - beyond inviting. Feels like a little sanctuary. A slice of untouched paradise. Who would have known? My toes dip themselves into the water faster than my brain can process it. The sand gives way under my feet. My mind syncs to the rhythmic lullaby of the waves. Feels like I’m merging. With nature. With Mykonos. The rest of the world fades away. It’s just me, the sand, the sea, and the sky. Time disappears.

A quick thought flashes through my mind, bringing it back to reality. It must be time to be seated. The desire to stay in my newly discovered oasis battles with hunger & curiosity for a fraction of a second, but gives up. The aroma and happy chatter from the tavern above are too inviting… “WOW! It’s incredible!” - Bobby’s camera is clicking away, trying to capture authentic culinary gems. Grilled meat. Olives. Tzatziki. The food, cooked over the fire, is a revelation. Each bite is a burst of flavors, each morsel, a work of love. It’s not just food. In some, hard to explain, ways, it’s a testament to authenticity, culture, and traditions. The taste, the smell, the textures weave into a melody that resonates deep within. Each bite - it’s more than just eating. It’s embracing a part of Mykonos that not many get to see.

Mykonos, you’ve enchanted me. Your streets. Your beaches. Your taverns. Your sunsets. They’re not just places & moments anymore. They’re a part of me. Tomorrow? Tomorrow is time to say good-bye. The first step to the journey back. But this “good-bye” is not the end. It’s the beginning. The beginning of beautiful memories. Of sharing fun stories. Of reliving these moments through the pictures and feelings, over again and again.

The boat glides over azure waves as the island of Mykonos falls out of sight. My heart tugs a bit, bidding adieu to its windmills & whitewashed houses, but the promise of Athens keeps the melancholy at bay. We’re off ! A bunch of seagulls squawk their farewells in unison. Ahead is just the shimmering Aegean Sea is a blue so bright, it feels like we’re cruising on a lagoon of sapphire confetti. Athens rolls into view like a movie reel, its modern skyline sprawled beneath the majestic Acropolis. Feels like time travel. One minute I’m in the 21st century, next minute… I’m in the age of togas and olive wreaths. Athens is a quirky cocktail of the salty sea, olive trees, and strong Greek coffee that fills my every cell with excitement. My lips can’t help but grin as the taxi is weaving its way towards the hotel. Let’s see if the room comes with a view that’s 2,500 years in the making. My eyes scan the road. There are teenagers skateboarding past graffiti-laced walls just like the teens at skater park in Venice. Elderly men with chess boards in front of them sip strong coffee under the shade of orange trees and chat. My heart skips a beat and a smile makes its way to my face. My grandfather was just like them. Athens is more than a city. It’s an ensemble of stories, playing out in real-time on every street corner.

The sun cracks open a new day. Bobby’s shutter doesn’t stop as we are getting closer to the mighty Acropolis. History is humming in the air, as our guide climbs up an ancient path that’s seen more sandals than a beachside flip-flop store. The Parthenon is just as jaw-dropping as I’d imagined. But standing there, looking up at those towering columns, I can’t help but laugh at the thought of all those ancient Greeks with neck cramps. Seriously. It’s a colossal postcard from the past. My eyes half expect to catch Socrates popping out, pestering us all with philosophy. My hand touches the timeworn stones. I can almost hear the echoes of ancient philosophers debating, playwrights composing dramas, and artisans chiseling history. Under the cerulean sky, with the panoramic view of Athens sprawled below, there is a profound connection to those who stood here millennia ago, their dreams and dialogues carried forward by the wind. No words can describe the whirlwind of emotions. It must be experienced. A part of me wants to just stay here forever, but our guide moves faster than an NYC cab. Shopping in Plaka is on agenda. One last glance at the Acropolis, and reluctantly my feet follow the way. Time to see what this Plaka is all about.

It takes less than ½ a second to realize that I found my favorite part of Athens. The neighborhood, a vibrant maze tucked under the Acropolis, welcomes with its happy, kaleidoscopic spirit. The stone-paved alleyways are like arteries, pulsating with life, channeling Athens’ heart into every corner. Wandering through Plaka is like stepping into a living, breathing postcard. Each turn unveils a new scene: an artist capturing the play of shadows on an old chapel, a couple whispering sweet nothings under a canopy of wisteria, a child chasing a cat past a vibrant mural. You are not just observing; you become a part of the narrative, adding your own footnotes to the tale of the day. This place is a slice of old Athens that’s dodged the modern age. The houses, tangled bougainvillea vines, the tiny alleyways where you’re more likely to bump into a local granny than a map-toting tourist - all have stories of their own to tell. A very enthusiastic waiter at a small taverna waves us in for a late lunch. I didn’t even realize it’s after 3pm. Time flew. In less than 5 minutes a feast appears under the tavern’s grapevine tapestry: tzatziki, saganaki, souvlaki. And coffee. The incredible Greek coffee. My mind makes a note to figure out how to recreate this at home. My inner coffee gourmet is in heaven. Rapid strains of bouzouki music infuse the air. A street musician is making his way down the stairs. A small lunch break turns into a sensory banquette. Athens sure knows how to make every moment count! ....

... Bags packed. The day rolls into night. Time for a farewell dinner at the hotel’s rooftop restaurant. My eyes get locked on the view: The Athenian sky slowly turns into a kaleidoscope of colors as the Acropolis lights up like a stage for the gods. The perfect backdrop for contemplation, making memories that will always stay with me. I do not know what made me think that two days in Athens will be enough. This city is a fun, wild, history-filled, and a roller coaster ride that takes you back in time while keeping one foot firmly in the present. A loud “OPA!!” pulls me away from thoughts. A paryt of four just a few tables away are breaking into a traditional dance. To a modern song. A touch of a smile hides in corners of my lips. Athenians sure know how to blend the old with the new. “May I?”, - the waiter, a gentleman in his 50s, starts to pour wine as my head nods in agreement, thoughts racing with the speed of light. Until next time, Athens. Keep shining. Keep storytelling. Keep enchanting travelers who come seeking a piece of your immortal glory. Until next time...

Later, many temples (such as Erechtheion, Parthenon & the Temple of Athena Nike) and other buildings were built here to overlook the city. About seven million tourists climb the hill of the Acropolis each year.

Origins & Destinations - Greece 399

nce upon a time, in a land far away, there was a little village nestled in the green valleys of Greece. On a special night, when the stars sparkled like diamonds, the village children gathered around a cozy campfire. Little did they know that the night would be filled with magic, as the gods & goddesses of ancient Greece decided to pay them a visit! Among the children was young Alex, a curious & adventurous boy who loved to explore. He sat by the fire, wide-eyed with excitement, eager to hear the tales that awaited him. As Zeus appeared above the campfire, his voice booming like thunder, Alex’s eyes lit up with wonder. “Wow, it’s Zeus! The king of all gods!” he whispered to his friend, Sofia, who sat beside him. Sofia giggled, her eyes shining. “I know! This is so cool! I can’t wait to hear what he has to say!” Zeus smiled warmly at the children. “Greetings, young ones! Tonight, I shall tell you the tale of how I became the ruler of the heavens and the world!”

Origins & Destinations - Greece 403

Once upon a time, on the majestic Mount Olympus, the powerful god Zeus gathered with his fellow gods and goddesses. With his beard and hair sparkling like lightning, Zeus addressed the divine assembly. “Dearest siblings,” Zeus began, his voice echoing like thunder, “Today, I shall unleash a mighty storm upon the lands of Greece. The people need our help, and I shall not disappoint them.” Athena, the wise goddess of wisdom, stepped forward, her eyes gleaming with curiosity. “Zeus, your thunderous storms are truly awe-inspiring. May I accompany you on this venture?” Zeus smiled warmly at Athena. “Of course, my dear sister! Your wisdom will guide us through this endeavor.”

With a wave of his mighty hand, Zeus summoned dark clouds to gather in the sky. The heavens rumbled with anticipation as the once clear blue sky transformed into a sea of gray. Lightning crackled across the horizon, and raindrops began to fall, gently at first, then pouring down in a soothing symphony. The gods and goddesses marveled at Zeus’s power, watching in awe as the storm unfolded. Poseidon, the god of the sea, joined the assembly and exclaimed, “Zeus, your storms command even the mighty waters of the ocean! Your strength is truly unparalleled!” Zeus nodded graciously, his pride evident. “Thank you, Poseidon. Together, we wield nurture and protect our lands and people.”

As the storm raged on, Hermes, the mischievous messenger of the gods, arrived with a playful grin. “Zeus, your storms are magnificent! I shall spread the word across the heavens of your majestic display!” The gods laughed, enjoying Hermes’s vibrant energy. “Go forth, my brother, and let all know of the power of Zeus’s thunderous greeting!” Zeus proclaimed with a hint of amusement.

Amidst the tumultuous storm, Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, gracefully floated down from the heavens. “Zeus, your storms invoke both fear and admiration. Your might is truly captivating,” she said, her charm enchanting the divine assembly. Zeus bowed gallantly to Aphrodite. “Your presence adds grace and beauty to any occasion, dear sister. I am humbled by your words.” As the storm subsided and the sun peeked through the dissipating clouds, the gods and goddesses returned to their divine abodes. Zeus looked upon the tranquil lands of Greece, now nourished by the rain, and felt a sense of fulfillment. In the halls of Mount Olympus, gods & goddesses spoke of Zeus’s thunderous greeting. Their interactions were filled with camaraderie, admiration, and a shared sense of duty to protect and nurture the mortal realm. And so, little ones, whenever you see the power of thunder and the gift of rain, remember the captivating display of Zeus, the Thunderous Greetings. Just as the gods on Mount Olympus interacted with awe and wonder, may you too find inspiration and unity in the awe-inspiring forces of nature. Sleep tight, and may the tales of divine interactions fill your dreams with grandeur and majesty.”

Alex closed his eyes as Zeus recounted his epic battles with the Titans. He imagined the fierce battles and grand adventures, feeling as if he were a hero in his own story. …. As the night went on, Athena, the goddess of wisdom, joined the children. She admired the inquisitive look in Alex’s eyes and knew he was eager to learn. Athena approached him and said, “Hello, young scholar! Would you like to hear a riddle?” Alex’s eyes sparkled with excitement. “Yes, please! I love riddles!”

Athena smiled and asked, “What comes once in a minute, twice in a moment, but never in a thousand years?” Alex furrowed his brow, deep in thought. Tonight, we shall gather around the sacred campfire, and Athena, the wise owl, shall share her boundless wisdom with us!” The gods and goddesses gathered eagerly around the campfire, their eyes shining with anticipation. I perched on a nearby branch, ready to impart my knowledge to them. With a hoot of approval from Zeus, I began, “Dear siblings, wisdom is a treasure that illuminates the path of life. It guides us through the darkest of times and the brightest of days.” Hermes, the mischievous messenger of the gods, raised an eyebrow and chimed in playfully, “Athena, does wisdom also help us solve riddles and outsmart others?” I smiled at his curiosity. “Indeed, Hermes! Wisdom grants us the ability to solve riddles, make wise decisions, and see beyond the surface of things.” As the night unfolded, the gods and goddesses engaged in lively discussions about the wonders of wisdom. Apollo, the god of sun, praised the importance of knowledge in his music, and Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, spoke of the wisdom of the heart.

As the night continued, I shared ancient stories of heroes and sages who sought wisdom and the blessings it brought to their lives. Each god and goddess felt inspired, realizing that wisdom was a gift they could all cherish. In the warmth of the campfire’s glow, Zeus smiled at the camaraderie among the gods. “Athena, your wisdom is a beacon that enlightens us all. We’re very grateful for your guidance.” I humbly dipped my head, grateful for the opportunity to share my wisdom with my divine family. “Thank you, Zeus. May we always cherish the gift of knowledge & grow wiser with each passing day.” As the night came to a close, the gods and goddesses bid each other farewell, their hearts filled with newfound wisdom and unity. I spread my wings and soared back to my celestial realm, content in knowing that my journey as Athena, the wise owl, had left a lasting impact. And so, dear children, may you too seek the wonders of wisdom in your journey through life. Just as the gods and goddesses learned from one another, may you learn from the world around you and grow wiser with each day. Sleep tight, little ones, and may the guidance of Athena, the wise owl, illuminate your dreams with the brilliance of knowledge and understanding. ... As the night continued, Apollo, the sun god, descended with his golden lyre, filling the air with melodious tunes. The children couldn’t resist dancing around the campfire, their laughter and joy echoing through the valley. After everyone was tired, Apollo sat down, whispered something to his lyre & this time instead of playing music it magically began to tell Apollo’s story in his voice.

& The Tales of His Music

LivingNotes

Once upon a time, in the celestial realm of Mount Olympus, I, Apollo, the sun god, found myself surrounded by my fellow gods and goddesses. My golden lyre in hand, I felt the melody of my music resonating within me, eager to share the enchanting tales of my music with my divine companions. With a radiant smile, I addressed my beloved siblings, “Greetings, my dearest family! Tonight, I shall weave the magical tapestry of music & transport us through the wonders of time.” Athena, the wise goddess of wisdom, leaned forward with curiosity. “Oh, Apollo! Your music has always held a special place in my heart. I am eager to hear the tales it shall unveil.” Zeus, the mighty ruler of Mount Olympus, nodded with approval. “Indeed, my son! Your music is a gift that brightens even the darkest of days. Let the tales of Apollos’ Music begin!” With the strum of my lyre, the air around us shimmered, and we were transported to a land filled with celestial melodies and vibrant colors. The gods and goddesses watched in awe as my music painted vivid images of ancient tales. As the first notes of my lyre echoed through the heavens, the story of the creation of the world began. I sang of the cosmos unfolding, of stars dancing in the night sky, & planets finding their orbits. The gods listened intently, mesmerized by the harmonious symphony. As the night continued, the tales of Apollos’ Music unfolded like chapters in a grand saga. I sang of the bravery of heroes, like Hercules, who triumphed over mighty beasts with courage and strength. Aphrodite, the goddess of love, was moved by the romantic melodies that filled the air, reminding her of the power of love to conquer all.

Hermes, the playful messenger of the gods, chimed in with enthusiasm, “Apollo, your music is full of life and joy! It lifts our spirits and brings laughter to our hearts.” I smiled warmly at him. “Thank you, Hermes! Music has the power to connect us all, to lift us up and remind us of the beauty of life.” As the night drew on, I played melodies that stirred deep emotions within the gods. The tender tunes touched upon moments of love, friendship, and the beauty of nature. The gods found solace in the harmony of my music, and I was humbled by the impact it had on them. With the final chord of my lyre, we returned to the celestial realm of Mount Olympus. Zeus spoke with pride, “Apollo, your music is a gift that brings us together, uniting us in joy and wonder. We are blessed to have you among us.” I bowed gratefully to my father. “Thank you, Zeus. My music is a reflection of the love and harmony that exist among us all.” As the gods bid each other goodnight, they carried the tales of Apollos’ Music in their hearts, knowing that music would forever be a source of joy and inspiration in their lives. And so, dear children, may the music in your hearts guide you through life’s adventures. Just as the gods of Mount Olympus were touched by Apollos’ Music, may you too find solace, joy, & connection through the magic of music. Sleep tight, little ones, and may the melodies of Apollo’s lyre fill your dreams with wonder and enchantment.

Chapter IV

Hercules & His Epic Tales of Bravery

426

LivingNotes

Once upon a time, in the magnificent realm of Mount Olympus, I, Hercules, the brave and strong hero, found myself surrounded by my fellow gods and goddesses. With muscles of steel & a lion’s skin draped over my shoulder, I was ready to share my thrilling adventures with my divine companions. With a hearty laugh, I addressed my dear siblings, “Greetings, my fellow gods and goddesses! Gather ‘round, for I shall regale you with the wondrous tales of my daring escapades.” Zeus, the mighty ruler of Mount Olympus, smiled fondly at me. “Ah, Hercules, your courage & valor are an inspiration to us all. Share your stories, my son.” With a glint of excitement in my eyes, I began my epic tales of bravery. “Once, I faced the fierce Nemean Lion, a fearsome creature with a hide as tough as armor,” I said, my voice resonating like thunder. Ares, the god of war, leaned forward, intrigued. “Tell us, Hercules, how did you defeat the ferocious lion?” I grinned, recalling the battle. “With my strength and wits, I strangled the beast with my bare hands and skinned it to wear as a symbol of my victory!” Aphrodite, the goddess of love, chimed in, “Oh, Hercules!Your bravery is only matched by your kindness. Your actions demonstrate the heart of a true hero.” I nodded with humility. “Thank you, Aphrodite. My adventures have taught me that true strength lies not just in physical prowess, but in the compassion and courage to help others.”

As the night went on, I shared tales of my quests to capture the Ceryneian Hind, the Erymanthian Boar, and the fearsome Hydra. Each battle brought new challenges, and I faced them with determination and a spirit of justice. Apollo, the god of music, praised my courage. “Hercules, your bravery is truly legendary! Your tales inspire us all to face our fears and stand up for what is right.” I smiled gratefully at Apollo. “Thank you, brother. It is my duty to protect and serve, using my strength to bring peace to the mortal realm.” As the night grew darker, I recounted my most challenging task—the Twelve Labors. My heart swelled with pride as I spoke of my efforts to clean the Augean stables, capture the Cretan Bull, and retrieve the Golden Apples of the Hesperides. Athena, the wise goddess of wisdom, nodded with admiration. “Hercules, your intelligence and courage in completing the Twelve Labors are remarkable. You have proven yourself as a true hero.”

With a glimmer of mischief, Hermes, the messenger of the gods, teased, “Hercules, you may be a hero, but surely even you had some doubts during these trials?” I chuckled, “Indeed, Hermes! There were moments of doubt, but with the support of my friends and the gods, I persevered.” As the night came to a close, the gods & goddesses bid each other goodnight, inspired by my tales of bravery and valor. They knew that bravery was not just about physical strength, but about the strength of character and the will to do what is right.” My little friend, may you too find courage and kindness in your hearts. Just as the gods of Mount Olympus were inspired by my tales, may you be inspired to be heroes in your own way, facing challenges with bravery and compassion. Sleep tight, little ones, and may the adventures of Hercules, the brave, fill your dreams with daring and excitement.

Alex knew that he and his friends would carry the spirit of bravery, wisdom, and adventure with them forever. And so, my friends, as you close your eyes tonight, remember the magic you hold within.Dream big, believe in yourselves, and embrace the wonders that await you in the land of dreams and beyond.
