LETTER from E D I T O R

Origins & Destinations - Barcelona 3

I didn’t research Barcelona. On purpose. Usually, I’m meticulous about all places I’ve never been to. This time I wanted it to be a surprise. A friend told me I’d love Barcelona. He didn’t say how much. From the very moment I stepped foot in this vibrant city, I could feel a pulsating energy, a rhythm that seemed to resonate from the cobblestone streets to the lively chatter in cafes with every cell of my being. Barcelona didn’t just greet me, it embraced me, with open arms and a hearty smile, as if saying, “Welcome, friend, to the melody of life.” As a first-timer wandering the city streets, I found that Barcelona has a way of unfolding itself layer by layer, like a much-loved book that keeps offering new insights each time you read it. The architectural wonders seemed to whisper tales of yore, where modernity and history blend seamlessly, creating a rich tapestry that can only be described as authentically Barcelona. Each neighborhood narrates a different story. From the historic allure of the Gothic Quarter to the modernist charm of Eixample, I was continually enthralled. It seemed that every turn held a new surprise. But Barcelona is more than its sights and sounds. It’s in the warmth of its people, the kind smiles exchanged in marketplaces, and the laughter that fills the air in the evenings as families and friends gather to enjoy meals together. It’s in the spontaneous dance circles that form in squares, and the melodious hum of street musicians providing a soundtrack to the city’s daily life. I realized that not researching Barcelona allowed me to experience the city in its purest form. It felt less like visiting and more like unraveling a beautiful secret, one delightful moment at a time. My friend was right, I did love Barcelona, but it was more than love. It was a heartfelt connection, a slow yet profound realization that sometimes, the best experiences are those that are not planned, but simply felt and lived. I hope this editorial takes you on a journey and fills your hearts with emotions we felt when walking the narrow streets of one of the most magical cities created: Barcelona. Enjoy!

Categor y I Motion Blur Using the Camera 1. Harnessing the Power of Shutter Speed for Motion Blur

When it comes to crafting stellar motion blur imagery, mastering the nuances of shutter speed is pivotal. This technique allows you to inject a dynamic fluidity into your photographs, transforming static scenes into a cascade of movement. Here’s how to ace this technique with varied shutter speeds: Slow Shutter Speeds (1/2 to 1/15 second) Venturing into the slower territory of shutter speeds unveils the realm of motion blur. In this range, you can beautifully encapsulate the graceful swirl of autumn leaves spiraling in the wind, or the soothing flow of a stream weaving through rocks. The outcome is a soft, artistic blur that narrates a tale of movement. Long Exposures (1 to 30 seconds) This is where the magic of motion blur truly blossoms. Imagine capturing the ethereal grace of star trails in the night sky, or the smooth, milky texture of a waterfall cascading down a rocky cliff. These speeds allow you to create a dynamic interplay of stillness and motion in your frame. Extended Long Exposures (Bulb Mode, ranging from a minute to even hours) In this extreme end of the shutter speed spectrum, your camera turns into a canvas capturing the very essence of time. Picture a bustling city square, where individuals morph into ghostly figures, creating a surreal, dream-like artwork that embodies the swift passage of time in an urban setting and strength to the straw”. It’s a unique way to raise a glass! Pro Tip: A secret to taking your motion blur photography to a professional level is the incorporation of neutral density filters. These filters allow you to extend your shutter speed even during bright daylight conditions, without overexposing the image, offering a greater canvas to craft stunning motion blur imagery. Experiment with varying degrees of ND filters to sculpt the precise visual narrative you envision, where light and time bend at your will.

62

LivingNotes

2. Elevating the Panning Technique

Beyond merely tracking your subject, professionals venture into fine-tuning their synchronization with the moving object, crafting a directional blur that embodies both speed & fluidity. Experiment with various shutter speeds, studying the distinctiveness that each setting lends to your composition. Pro Tip: When honing your panning skills in Barcelona, opt for locations with rich backgrounds that encapsulate the city’s vibrant culture. Pair your panning shots with the rustic hues of the Gothic Quarter or the dynamic street art in Poblenou to add an extra layer of storytelling and depth to your motion blur images.

3. Sculpting Motion Blur: Your Toolkit of Lenses & Filters

When endeavoring to craft the perfect motion blur imagery, having the right set of lenses and filters can be your gateway to creating transcendent works of art. Let’s delve into some specifics that can aid in sculpting these dynamic visuals: Filters: Your Palette of Choices Hoya ND Filter This is your tool for harnessing the sun while capturing the fluid dance of the waves, or the swift flight of birds across the sky, aiding in controlled daylight exposures without an overexposure mishap. Polarizing Filters Think of this as your magic wand to dampen the harsh reflections and glare, enhancing the fluidity and smoothness in water surfaces or the sky, thus offering a cleaner, more focused motion blur. Lee Filters Graduated ND Your best friend for crafting heavenly motion blur shots during the golden hour, offering a balanced exposure that creates a surreal transition between the stationary and the moving elements. Tif fen Variable ND Filter Your versatile partner in crafting motion blur images with a variety of density adjustments, enabling you to play with light and time seamlessly.

The art of creating motion blur doesn’t just end with clicking the shutter; it extends into the realms of post-production and editing, where a multitude of tools await to turn your vision into a reality. Here are some unique approaches and software recommendations for you to explore:

Adobe Photoshop

The titan of photo editing reigns supreme with a myriad of tools at your disposal. Delve deep into its functionalities like Path Blur for creating dynamic linear movements, and Spin Blur to add a vortex of motion in your images. While the functionalities are extensive, it may pose as a labyrinth for newcomers. Try experimenting with the ‘Timeline’ feature to create stunning motion blur visuals through frame-by-frame editing.

Lightroom

This software stands as a beacon for those who adore batch processing. It’s your go-to for creating a uniform motion blur effect across a series of images, especially when creating time-lapse photography. While it might not offer the detailed nuance of Photoshop, its integration with the latter makes it a formidable tool in your editing suite.

Capture One

Step into the world of vibrant storytelling with Capture One’s superior color grading options. This software lets you paint your motion blur images with a palette of colors that breathe life into every frame. However, brace yourself for a steep learning curve and a price tag that matches its premium offerings.

DxO PhotoLab

Venture into the realm of AI with DxO PhotoLab, a software that promises intelligent optimizations to enhance your motion blur techniques. While it might not boast the extensive toolkit found in Photoshop, its AI-driven functionalities make it a strong contender for creating ethereal motion blur imagery.

Categor y III Motion Blur Using Phone LivingNotes

1. Utilizing Professional Camera Settings on Phone

Explore high-end smartphones with Pro or Manual modes for granular control over the photography settings. Apps like “Slow Shutter Cam” and “ProCam X” offer heightened control over long exposure shots. While “Slow Shutter Cam” is intuitive with an easy UI, “ProCam X” provides more advanced settings, which might require a bit of learning curve. Pro Tip: For a flawless motion blur effect using your smartphone, try coupling the in-built optical image stabilization feature (available in high-end smartphones) with a sturdy tripod. This setup ensures sharp stationary elements while capturing the fluid motion, giving a professional touch to your motion blur imagery, right from your phone.

2. Enhancing Mobile Photography with Lens Attachments

Consider attachments like the Moment Wide Lens for capturing broader scenes with a unique perspective, or the Sirui Telephoto Lens for zoomed shots with enhanced details. Remember, each lens comes with its unique properties which might require some practice to master. Pro Tip: When utilizing lens attachments for mobile photography, leverage the manual focus option available in professional mobile photography apps to precisely control the focal point in your motion blur compositions. This facilitates capturing sharper subjects against a smoothly blurred background, bringing a DSLR-like quality to your mobile shots in the bustling streets of Barcelona.

Lightroom Mobile

This app is a behemoth in the mobile editing landscape, offering a smorgasbord of powerful editing tools coupled with seamless cloud integration. It stands as a beacon for professionals, although its sophisticated features might be a bit too resource-heavy for older smartphones.

Snapseed

Tailored for pros, Snapseed presents a user-friendly interface paired with potent editing options, making it a favorite among many. Its versatility is its strong suit, though it lacks the extensive cloud storage and synchronization options that are a hallmark in apps like Lightroom.

AfterFocus

A specialist in the field, it enables a meticulous and granular application of blur effects, thus allowing for a deep dive into motion blur creativity. While its capabilities are profound, the slightly dated user interface might feel a notch below the modern sleek designs found in other apps.

Photoshop Camera

Standing as a formidable force, this app brings intelligent features to your mobile device, including real-time Photoshop effects and AI functionalities that understand the subjects in your photos, hence facilitating innovative & precise blur effects. However, to fully harness its capabilities, a latest-gen smartphone would be necessary due to its high-end functionalities.

VSCO

Revered among professionals for its high-grade filters and editing tools, VSCO extends precise control over shutter speed, a critical parameter for curating impeccable motion blur effects. The caveat? The full potential of the app is unlocked through a subscription model, which might not suit everyone’s preferences.

Known for its chic and modern interface, it offers a range of exquisite filters and editing tools that can bring a distinctive flair to your motion blur imagery. Its unique selling point is the balance it strikes between user-friendliness & professional-grade features, though some might find the filter choices a bit limiting compared to other established apps. Embarking on the journey of crafting the quintessential motion blur image demands not only a keen eye but also the adept utilization of the functionalities that these apps bring to the table. Experiment, explore, and let these apps be the wings that elevate your photographic creativity to soaring heights.

4. Stability Matters – Choose the Right Tripod

Invest in a robust tripod or a gimbal stabilizer for smartphones to ensure sharpness where it matters. Consider options like the Manfrotto PIXI or the Joby GorillaPod for sturdy and versatile support systems. As seasoned photographers and art aficionados, your voyage into the domain of motion blur photography is akin to painting on a canvas with light and shadows. Every detail, from the lens used to the software chosen, dictates the final masterpiece. By amalgamating technology with artistry, utilizing the prowess of advanced tools, and the subtleties of seasoned techniques, you can craft images that are not just snapshots, but narratives frozen in time, echoing the profound aesthetics of motion and life. The Birth of Barcino

In a distant age, around the 1st century BC, a thriving Roman colony known as ‘Barcino’ was born upon these shores. It was nestled comfortably between the ancient Laietani and the Mediterranean, a testament to the vision of Roman conquerors who recognized the strategic potential of this land. The city’s life flowed through its bustling streets, merchants haggled in the markets, and Roman walls began to rise, defining its boundaries.

The Legacy of Roman Rule

Under Roman rule, ‘Barcino’ flourished and adopted the very essence of Roman culture. The unmistakable grid pattern of its streets, remnants of which endure today, paid homage to its Roman lineage. The colony became a crucial hub, not just for trade but also for the dissemination of ideas, art, and culture throughout the region.

The Medieval Majesty

The Age of Conquests

Yet, as the pages of history turned, so did the tides of conquest. Barcelona bore witness to the rise and fall of empires— Visigoths, Moors, and Franks. Each wave left its mark, and the city’s name evolved with its rulers, echoing their languages and cultures. The Arabic ‘Barshiluna’ and the Frankish ‘Barcelona’ whispered of the city’s storied past.

The Resilience of Barcelona

The pages of Barcelona’s history, however, bear stains of darker chapters. The Spanish Civil War, with its heart-wrenching tales, saw the city endure hardships and destruction. The haunting Bunkers del Carmel silently narrates the story of this tumultuous era, bearing witness to a city’s resilience. As we step out of the time-traveling journey, we find ourselves in modern Barcelona—a city that proudly wears its history on its sleeves. About

Gaudí

B

Origins &i Destinations 121 orn in 1852 in Riudoms, Spain, Antoni Plàcid Guillem Gaudí Cornet,- Barcelona knowns as Antoni Gaudí grew up to be one of the most influential architects in the world. His father worked as a coppersmith, which may have inspired Gaudí’s interest in intricate design and craftsmanship. He particularly made a name for himself with his unique approach to combining the Catalan art nouveau and the Gothic styles in his architectural masterpieces.

Early Life

Gaudí’s early life was marked by a deep connection to his Catalan heritage. Raised in a region known for its rich cultural traditions and distinct identity, he developed a strong sense of Catalan nationalism that would later profoundly influence his architectural work. In 1869, Gaudí moved to Barcelona to study architecture at the Provincial School of Architecture, while Renaixença, a cultural and artistic revival in Catalonia reclaiming Catalan identity and heritage was in full motion, which clearly shaped his unique approach to design.

Architectural Evolution

Gaudí’s early architectural work was influenced by Neo-Gothic and Neo-Mudejaruch, showcasing his ability to apply traditional architectural elements with a unique flair. However, it was his work with the entrepreneur and patron Eusebi Güell that marked a turning point in his career. Under Güell, Gaudí began to develop his distinctive style, characterized by a fusion of nature-inspired organic forms, innovative structural techniques, and meticulous attention to detail. The Palau Güell displays Gaudí’s departure from traditional architectural norms. The building’s undulating forms, colorful mosaics, and imaginative chimneys was the start of his fascination with organic architecture in his later work.

Sagrada Família: A Lifelong Obsession

Perhaps Gaudí’s most renowned and enduring work is the Sagrada Família basilica. This monumental project became an obsession for him and consumed the latter part of his life. The Sagrada Família is a testament to his innovative architectural vision and unwavering dedication to his craft. His ability to create a unified and harmonious architectural ensemble sets the Sagrada Família apart as a masterpiece of both art and engineering (more to come on that later in the article).

Structural Mastery & Architectural Innovation

One of the most remarkable aspects of Gaudí’s work is his innovative approach to architecture and structural engineering. He often employed groundbreaking techniques to achieve his visionary designs. For instance, he developed the concept of the “catenary arch” to create the curved forms seen in many of his buildings, including the Sagrada Família and Casa Milà. Gaudí’s use of architectural models and meticulous planning allowed him to experiment with structural prototypes, ensuring the stability and durability of his designs. His reliance on physical models

and the study of geometric principles, such as hyperbolic and parabolic forms, set him apart as a true architectural innovator.

Integration of Nature

Gaudí’s deep connection to nature profoundly influenced his approach to architecture, believing that there are no straight lines or sharp corners in nature. His use of organic forms, inspired by natural shapes and patterns, imbued his buildings with a sense of harmony and interconnectedness with the natural world.

Integration of Spirituality

Gaudí’s Catholic faith played a significant role in his architectural designs. His buildings are designed to create a sense of awe and spiritual transcendence and often display religious symbolism. His use of light and colors in Sagrada Família is a testament to his devotion.

Casa Batlló & Park Güel

Gaudí also left his mark on residential and recreational architecture in Barcelona. Casa Batlló and Park Güell would be a couple of examples of his influence in that regard. Casa Batlló with its whimsical design, undulating façade, colorful mosaics, and organic forms, exemplifies Gaudí’s commitment to creating functional yet artistic living spaces. Park Güel is a public park that showcases Gaudí’s love for nature and innovative design; a testament to Gaudí’s vision of creating a harmonious urban space inspired by nature. We have included some fascinating facts about both of these later in the article.

Legacy and Influence

Antoni Gaudí’s architectural legacy extends far beyond his lifetime in the broader architectural movements of Art Nouveau & Organic Architecture. His innovative use of materials, pioneering structural techniques, and commitment to organic forms have inspired countless architects and artists. His work also continues to shape Barcelona’s identity, as his buildings are among the city’s most visited landmarks and 7 of the 9 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. His unique approach defied conventions and left an everlasting mark on the world of architecture. His dedication to his craft and his unwavering pursuit of beauty and harmony in design continue to inspire architects, artists, and admirers around the world. He died in Barcelona in 1926 while working full time on Sagrada Família. In this article, we will focus on his most famous masterpieces: Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló and Park Güell.

Construction The construction of the Sagrada Familia originally began in 1882 with Francesco de Paula del Villar as the chief architect. He abandoned the project in 1883 due to some disagreements with others involved in the project. Gaudí then took over and worked on the project till his death (he was hit by a tram in 1926). This period is referred to as the early construction during which only a portion of the Nativity Facade and the crypt being completed. Since Gaudí’s death, 7 additional architects have worked on Sagrada Familia. However, he continues to be recognized as the chief architect and main visionary behind this masterpiece. This long construction period is due to various factors, including the complexity of Gaudí’s design, funding challenges since the project was mostly supported by private donations, interruptions caused by events such as the Spanish Civil War of 1936 (during which the basilica was vandalized and some of Gaudí’s original plans were destroyed), and also the commitment to preserving Gaudí’s original vision (which has been significantly aided by the technological advancement in computer design and 3D printing). The construction was set to be completed by 2026, however the 2020 pandemics further delayed the project. The current estimate is for the project to be completed by 2030, 148 years after its inception.

Façades Sagrada Familia has three façades, and a fourth one that is planned to be added once the construction is completed:

Nativity Façade

This is the oldest façade of the Sagrada Familia, and it faces the east. It is adorned with intricate sculptures & symbols, depicting 18 different scenes from the life of Jesus, as well as representations of nature and life. A very interesting fact to note here is that the angels of The Chorus of Baby Angels placed on this façade are Japanese. The original sculptures were made of plaster and were destroyed during the Civil War. Those that can now be seen are an interpretation by sculptor Etsuro Sotoo, based on the ideas that Gaudi left behind”. Sotoo is the author of the 15 Angels on Nativity Facade, the 6 musicians and 9 forming the choir singers (see next page)

Glor y Façade

The Glory façade is located on the southern side of the Sagrada Familia and is dedicated to the glory of Jesus and features scenes of Christ’s rise to heaven and eternal bliss. It is designed to be the most monumental and grand of the facades, but it is still under construction. The design for this facade is characterized by its intricate and symbolic sculptures, representing the idea of human redemption and various biblical themes like Death, Final Judgement, Hell, and Glory. redemption. Glory is already the tallest of the 4 fecades, although unfinished.

Passion Façade

This façade is located on the west side of the basilica and represents the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Christ and is often considered the most iconic façade of the basilica. According to Gaudi, this facade was to be “Hard, bare and as if made of Bones” and the facade does elicit the as if it were made so. Strikingly different in form when compared to the Nativity Facade, this façade has a skeletal feel, with pillars resembling bones and expressive sculptures re-enacting the last week of Christ’s life. Guided by drawings made by Gaudí, Passion Façade was designed by sculptor Josep Maria Subirachs and is characterized by its stark and angular sculptures, which convey the intensity of Christ’s Passion. The construction of the Passion Façade began in 1954 and was completed in 1976.

Expiator y Façade

This façade, which was planned to be the fourth and final one, is intended to be situated on the northern side of the basilica. It is meant to symbolize the concept of expiation or atonement for sins. The construction of the Expiatory Facade has yet to start, but plans are in place for its eventual completion.

LivingNotes

Once completed, the Sagrada Familia will have 18 spires, 12 representing the apostles, 4 the evangelists, one the Virgin Mary and the highest of them all representing Jesus. Nativity Facade Towers These 4 towers represent each of the four Evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). They are shorter and are adorned with intricate sculptures and decorations. Passion Facade Towers These 4 towers symbolize the 12 Apostles. These towers are characterized by their angular and austere design, reflecting the theme of Christ’s suffering. Glor y Facade Towers The Glory Facade is planned to have towers representing the Apostles, the Virgin Mary, and the evangelists. The central and tallest tower, dedicated to Jesus Christ, will be topped by a cross reaching a height of 172 meters. Central Dome Towers Above the central nave of the basilica, there is a large central dome with 4 smaller surrounding towers representing the Virgin Mary, the four Evangelists, and Jesus Christ. Sacristy Towers These 2 towers located on either side of the basilica serve practical purposes for the religious services held at Sagrada Familia. Funicular Towers There are 2 funicular towers, which are used to transport materials during construction and are not part of the final design.

Light

The use of natural light in the Sagrada Família is one of the most remarkable aspects of its architectural design. Given that natural light holds symbolic significance in many religious traditions, symbolizing the divine and spiritual illumination, Gaudí carefully choreographed the impact of the natural light within the basilica. He used stained glass windows (with vibrant colors and patterns that are reminiscent of natural elements such as flowers, leaves, and flowing water) and took advantage of warm & cool colors on the opposite sides of the Basilica. So, as the sun travels across the sky, the interplay of light and shadow within the basilica changes, enhancing the spiritual experience of visitors by creating a heavenly and transcendent atmosphere. Gaudí also carefully chose the orientation of the basilica to maximize the capture of natural light. The east-facing Nativity Facade is designed to receive the morning sunlight, symbolizing the birth of Christ, while the Passion Facade, facing west, captures the evening light, symbolizing the crucifixion. Additionally, he used the interior towering columns that branch out like trees as light filters. When the sun shines through the stained glass windows, it creates dappled patterns of light that resemble sunlight as it would filter through leaves in a forest. And finally, Gaudí strategically included light wells (skylights) in his design to allow sunlight to penetrate deep into the interior, illuminating various areas of the basilica. This design element helps to create a sense of space and luminosity, even in the central nave.

Nature

LivingNotes

Inspired

Gaudí was deeply inspired by the beauty of the natural world & drew inspiration from nature for many elements of his design & ornamentation of the Sagrada Família. Characterized by organic & biomorphic shapes that mimic the forms found in nature, he designed the columns inside the basilica to resemble the trunks of trees (which serve a structural purpose in supporting the weight of the building), and the ceiling imitates a canopy of leaves, creating an otherworldly and forest-like interior. Additionally, intricate sculptures of animals, plants, and other elements from the natural world can be found on the facades, balconies, and other parts of the basilica. You can find 30 different animals at Sagrada Familia. Here are just a few to list: dove, pelican, snail, ladybug, turtle, chicken, chameleon, snake and a dog. To add to the tranquility of the basilica, the Sagrada Família complex includes beautifully landscaped gardens, creating a contemplative and meditative environment that compliments the basilica’s nature-inspired design. As the construction continues, efforts have been made to incorporate more sustainable and environmentally friendly features such as energy efficiency, water conservation, and green spaces into this one-of-a-kind structure.

Casa

Batlló Casa Batlló is another remarkable architectural masterpiece by Antoni Gaudí, located in the heart of Barcelona & is a prime example of the Moder nism architectural movement (Catalan Art Nouveau). T he location of the house is in the Passeig de Gràcia in the Eixample district, which in the early 20th century was known as a prestigious & fashionable area. Casa Batlló for ms part of a row of houses known as the “Block of Discord”, which consists of 4 buildings by noted Moder nista architects of Barcelona.

LivingNotes

One of Gaudí’s trademarks is the absence of straight lines in his designs. In Casa Batlló, you won’t find a single right angle in the entire building. This is even more impressive given the fact that he was not the original architect of the building. He was able to convinced the Batlló that he does not need to demolish the building they purchased (originally built in 1877) and a remodeling would suffice. It took him only 2 years to transform the building, remodel the main apartment, add floors & create another architectural masterpiece. Casa Batlló is no exception when it comes to being an extraordinary display of Gaudí’s love of nature and him drawing inspiration from natural elements. The building’s design is reminiscent of the surface of water with its wavy lines, and the balconies resemble the skulls of mythical creatures or given the intricate and unique ironwork on the balconies, it is to resemble masks, giving the building a sense of personality and character. Casa Batlló’s façade is adorned with colorful mosaics made of broken ceramic tiles, referred to as “trencadís”, which are the hallmark of Gaudí’s work. They were chosen for their ability to reflect light and create a shimmering effect, which also makes him a pioneer in recycling. Trencadís combined with the waves in the stone-base façade (a remarkable fact often goes unnoticed), creates a special & evocative light effect, symbolizing a calm sea.

The

Interior The interior of Casa Batlló is a masterpiece and another display of Gaudí incredible talent and genius. He collaborated with some of the best artisans of his time using wrought iron, wood, stained glass, ceramic tiles, and stone ornaments to bring his vision to life. The interior of Casa Batlló showcases the modernist design aesthetic of the early 20th century and features unique furniture and decorative elements designed by Gaudí himself. Doors leading to each apartment are identified by letters with modernist traits. The windows of each landing distort the tiles of the lightwell, transforming them into beautiful ripples of water. The doorknobs and banisters have ergonomic shapes. The details in Casa Batlló are a true work of art. The Noble Floor of the building is where the Batlló family lived. It is characterized by large, open spaces and an abundance of natural light. It features colorful stained glass, ornate ceilings, and elegant furnishing; a testament to Gaudí’s incredible attention to detail. With an area of 700 square meters, the noble floor has a dining hall, a private landing, a private space for couples, and a study with an interesting mushroom-shaped fireplace. There are huge oak doors on this floor with organic shapes into which Gaudí incorporated stained glass panes. A totally wavy ceiling in the living room is one of the highlights of this floor, which symbolizes the strength of the sea.

The

Lightwell The lightwell of the Casa Batlló is a marvel and is a fundamental part of the house, as it distributes the air and light that enter through the main skylight. Given his obsession with light and beauty and his incredible attention to details to ensure that his creations are beautiful and functional, this lightwell is truly one of his masterpieces. Gaudí added a second the patio to ensure that natural light would reach all of the rooms on all five floors. To decorate the lightwell, he used tiles of different blue tones (pearl gray to cobalt to blue) as they go up toward the skylight in order to ensure the uniform distribution of the light. He followed the same logic when it comes to the size of the windows in the lightwell: the upper windows are smaller and they become bigger as we descend to allow more light to enter to lower floors’ rooms. Windows have wooden slits which can be opened or closed for air flow and ventilation control. He simply thought about every single detail designing this marvel of a house. Gaudí also installed an elevator in the center of the lightwell and made Casa Batlló one of the first residences in Barcelona to have a private elevator for the residents’ use. Its beautiful original wooden lift car is still in use today and reaches the top terrace.

The

Roof The roof terrace of Casa Batlló, also known as the Dragon Roof, is often likened to the back of a dragon. The colorful ceramic tiles in various shades of blue, green, and mauve that crown the building form a colorful and wavy mantle that resemble a dragon’s back. However, the most recognizable and iconic feature of the rooftop is the dragon-like sculpture that graces the top of the building. These uniquely designed chimneys and ventilation shafts are covered in colorful tiles and resemble the shape of helmets or the spines of mythical creatures. It is thought that the intentional design of the rooftop is to represent the slain dragon from the legend of Saint George, the patron saint of Catalonia. In a medieval myth, St. George kills a dragon with his lance, Ascalon (the four-armed cross on the roof symbolizes the sword of Saint George). By doing so, he saved the life of the princess who was next in line to be sacrificed, when the people ran out of livestock and trinkets for the dragon and started giving up a human tribute once a year. The rooftop of Casa Batlló is where art, architecture, and imagination come together in a truly unforgettable and unique way, while enjoying some breathtaking views of Barcelona.

Origins & Destinations - Barcelona 163

As mentioned before, Park Guell was first built as a housing development, but only two houses were built on the property. One of these houses was named Casa Museu Gaudí, where Gaudí lived from 1906 to 1926, when he died. The house was designed by architect Francesc Berenguer and was built as a model home between 1903 and 1905. Gaudí bought the house in 1906 and lived there with his father and niece (both died in 1906 & 1912, respectively). He moved to Sagrada Familia’s workshop in 1925, but died in this house on June 10, 1926 after being hit by a tram. 38 years after Gaudí passing, Casa Museu Gaudí was opened to the public in 1968, as a museum showcasing Gaudí’s life and work, and visitors can explore the house where the architect himself once lived. Many rooms are set up exactly as they would have been at the time. Many of his artworks, including drawings and furniture, are displayed in other open rooms. Casa Museu Gaudí hosts an exhibition of Gaud’s furniture designed for buildings such as Casa Batlló, Casa Calvet, Casa Milà, Casa Vicens, or the crypt of the Colnia Güell, which, along with the wrought iron elements also designed by him and displayed in the garden.

El

Drac A 5-meter-tall colorful salamander is located in the middle of the stairs at the entrance of Park Güell as one of its fountains. It is known as “el drac” meaning ‘the dragon’ in Catalan. It is also widely known as the Park Güell lizard. This colorful and mosaic-covered dragon sculpture has become a popular symbol of both the park and Barcelona itself Gaudí designed and built El Drac in 1914. Similar to the rooftop at Casa Batlló, El Drac was inspired by the dragon from the folk legend of Saint George (Brcelona is home to over 400 dragons inspired by the same Catalan legend). The fountain is known to be a symbol of fire and resistance. It is believed that salamanders can resist fire, due to its ability to extinguish flames by wrapping itself around them. Güell dedicated El Drac to his father-in-law. Gaudí used “trencadís” technique (covering a surface with many broken ceramic tiles) creating El Drac, which is a prominent technique used in Casa Batlló and the rest of Park Güel. Blue, orange, & green colorful ceramic shards shimmer in the sun to create a vibrant and visually striking dragon/lizard welcoming 9 million annual visitors to the park.

From here, visitors can also enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding area and Barcelona’s cityscape. The Hypostyle Room is designed in a Doric architectural style, which is characterized by its simplicity, 86 robust columns, & strong, masculine lines. It is an evident departure from Gaudí’s whimsical and organic forms seen in other parts of the park and his other creations. However, he makes up for the realistic columns by using his signature technique, trencadís, decorating the entire ceiling and the base of the columns with colorful mosaics made from broken ceramic. The Hypostyle Room was originally intended to serve as a marketplace or assembly area for the proposed housing development that Park Güell was designed to be.

Origins & Destinations - Barcelona 327

September 7th I didn’t know what to expect from Barcelona. I knew that everyone I asked for recommendations from said I’d love it. A friend suggested that I stay in La Ramblas. Said I’d love it. He didn’t say how much… La Ramblas, It’s like stepping into a dream. The warmth surrounds you. From every side. From the golden sun rays peeking through crooks and nannies between the narrow streets. From the smiles of the locals. From the laughter that fills the air. And the vibrant energy that buzzes around. Every step greets you by a new hue, a fresh scent, or an exciting sound. The narrow streets are like veins filled with the lifeblood of artists, performers, and the sweet hum of everyday life. It seems as though each corner has something to show and share. Oh, and the food! I tried tomato bread the first day, kind of ordered accidentally. Sounds like nothing special, but, my god, what an explosion of flavors! The sweetness of the tomato, the hint of salt, and the crispy, fresh bread… My brain takes a mental note to order this thing every time. And to figure out how they make it - I have to have it at home, too. Why is it that these simple foods are so ridiculously good in europe? Our little boutique hotel has a tiny balcony that faces the courtyard. The scene below is mesmerizing. Street lights are starting to turn on as the sun is making its way down for the night. Waiters are busy setting up outside tables. The air is starting to fill with the buzz of conversations. Barcelona at night is just as magical. I don’t think I want to ever leave this place. It feels like home. Crazy. But it does. I feel myself here. And free.

Barcelona in the morning is a lot quieter than I imagined it would be. Hardly anyone is out. Breakfast time. My eyes scan a little courtyard by our hotel for cafes. The gaze stops on the one I bookmarked in my mind yesterday. “Here?” - my head turns towards Bobby, who’s caught up flipping through hotel’s small travel guide, his eyebrows furrowing as he tries to decipher the Spanish phrases. He looks up, his eyes twinkling in the soft morning light that gives his skin a golden hue. “Yeah, this looks perfect,” his voice carries the same excitement that’s been fueling our adventure since we stepped off the plane. We settle into a cozy nook in the café, surrounded by the comforting aroma of freshly ground coffee beans and baked goods. A gentle breeze sways the leaves of the ancient trees lining the square, their shadows playing a slow dance on the cobblestones. Bobby’s shutter is clicking away. My eyes scan the perimeter. There is a guy smoking in the dark alleyway. My lips smile. I bet it’s going to be another photo-masterpiece of lights & shadow play. ...

... “Wait, but what about food?!” - the words slip out as a lively waiter disappears inside of the cafe after taking just two orders for coffee. “Food? You want to eat”, - the waiter is just as surprised as is my mind at his question. Of course we do. It’s breakfast, no? The confusion clearly written on my face tells the waiter all he needs to know. Two menus appear back on the table. The aroma from Bobby’s order of a hearty Spanish omelet spreads across the square. A small thought of regret for settling just for coffee and bread tried to make an appearance but was quickly hushed away by the presence of my order. The tomato bread looks even more appealing than the one I tried yesterday. The first bite sends me to my personal tomato bread heaven. The hum of the city slowly wakes up around us. Vendors start to set up their stalls, street artists begin to create their masterpieces, and locals chat animatedly, adding a gentle soundtrack to Barcelona morning. “Shall we?” My head gives a nod of agreement. Time to explore the secrets of the winding alleys. Each turn brings a new sight, a new sound, a new scent. The city feels alive, a living, breathing entity that embraces you with open arms, inviting you to become a part of its pulsating rhythm. Every turn seems to stumble on the mesmerizing architectural wonders of Gaudi. It’s incredible, how much beauty he left behind. His every creation is a symbol of the city’s enduring spirit and boundless creativity.

September 9th “Want to go to Park Güell?” My eyes leave the “Book Your Tour” screen and try to catch Bobby’s. “Might as well, right? We are going to be nearby”, - the phone screen flashes “booked” before Bobby even has a chance to answer. I mean, we are in Barcelona after all, right? Park Güell looks amazing. “Why is it that we ALWAYS end up with marathon-running tour guides?!” - my body is starting to silently protest to my brain’s push to keep up with the rest of the group. Seems impossible. This place is too beautiful to rush through. Feels magical. Fairy-tale like. The homes. The gardens. Decorations. Feels like you are inside of one of those kids stories. Park Güell melds nature and artistry in a perfect harmony, offering vistas that steal your breath away. Our guide makes her way to a colorful small area. “And now we made it to the longest bench in the world!” - her charming accent somehow makes the tone of the sentence sound even more triumphant. My aching legs make their way to the middle portion of the bench as the eyes scan the entire perimeter of the circular terrace, letting the mind absorb the city’s energy, the warmth of the sun, and the gentle caresses of the breeze. My heart is beating a little faster than usual. Emotions are overflowing. Barcelona feels like a dream. A beautiful, vivid dream that wraps you in its embrace and shows you what it’s like to feel freedom and a deeper connection with each other and the world around at the same time. ...

... The sun begins to dip low, painting the sky in hues of pink and purple. The view from the quaint beach eatery is breathtaking. The waiter is animatedly explaining something about tapas and the finest local wines from the menu. My head automatically nodes in agreement to his suggestions. The food here, just like the city itself, is a symphony of flavors and a huge part of the culture. The food market alone is the living example that Barcelona takes food seriously. The brain takes a mental note but my eyes are glued to the scenery in front. Ending the day at the beach, watching waves softly kiss the shore, people whispering secrets to each other, and following a beach volleyball mini-tournament - it feels peaceful and surreal. If this is a dream, it’s a dream I never want to wake up from.

September 12 th

“Tickets to Paris are booked. I don’t think we need to do anything special” - my fingers scroll through the itinerary for tomorrow. Last day in Barcelona. So bitter-sweet. A part of me is aching to get my camera to Parisian streets, but an even bigger part doesn’t want to leave Barcelona. At all. 6 days are far from enough. “You order, I’ll be right back”, - Bobby’s silhouette disappears in the crowd. Barcelona likes its weekends. The weekend brings a happy, busy buzz to the streets. Everywhere you look, there’s something exciting and fun happening. My eyes scan the square that has, by now, become my favorite morning hang-out spot. People are enjoying their Saturday. On one side, there’s a group doing yoga. It looks peaceful, a nice way to start the weekend. A little kiddo, trying hard to follow the instructor’s lead, reminds me of my Elia. My lips smile. Eyes continue to scan the perimeter. A bunch of people are painting the fountain. There is a farmers market. And in the middle of all of it, there is a crowd dancing in the middle. Everyone’s joining in - locals, kids, tourists, & older people too. It’s like one big, happy, dancing family. I can’t take my eyes away. This feels… happy. Fulfilling, restful and energizing at the same time. If there is one thing Barcelona taught me is that life is to be lived richly. Passionately. The only way it’s made to be lived.

Spanish Coat of Arms The current Spanish flag was placed in the constitution in 1981. It has red and yellow stripes and the Spanish coat of arms in the middle and off-center . The Spanish coat of arms has a crown symbolizing their monarchy, two pillars symbolizing the Strait of Gibraltar and the geographical location of the country. Each column carries a ribbon with the Latin motto “Plus Ultra,” or “further beyond” recognising the existence of the New World. There is a shield in between the columns with 6 symbols on it, 2 of which are: an old castle in a red background, for Castile and a red lion in white background, for León, Spain’s two original provinces in 1492.

Casa Battlló Now that you know of Antoni Gaudí, here is another one of his architectural marvels: Casa Batlló. It is a residential building that he re-designed for the Batlló family in 1904. It is also known as the House of Bones (based on how the building looks from the outside) or the House of Dragon (based on its rooftop’s design resembling a dragon’s scales and spine). The façade of the building also resembles an aquatic landscape, because it is not flat and the colors of the tiles and the placing were to resemble a calm sea. There are 49 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Spain, 9 of them are in Barcelona, 7 of those are some of Antoni Gaudí’s creative masterpieces, including Sagrada Familia and Casa Batlló.
